CHAIRMAN’S REPORT JOHN MURRAY, CHAIRMAN

As we move into the cooler months of winter, I have some heart-warming news to share with you. On Friday 8 May 2015, ClubsNSW, our peak body, held a special event to celebrate the industries annual Clubs & Community Awards. This event acknowledges the work clubs do in their communities. The awards recognise and celebrate the stories that cover the many different ways that clubs, across the State of NSW, contribute to their local communities. Bankstown Sports Club were joint winners in the category entitled “Outstanding Regional Initiative”. We were acknowledged for the support we provide to a relatively new initiative, Little Wings. Started by Kevin Robinson, a successful businessman, Little Wings helps seriously sick children in regional and remote NSW, by flying them to and from Bankstown Airport and subsequently to and from their respective children’s hospital for specialised medical treatment. This volunteer service provides much needed relief to parents who would otherwise have to transport or drive their children over long distances for vital treatment. Shortly after Kevin Robinson started the charity with volunteer pilots and drivers, we decided to support Little Wings with $25,000 and 15 nights’ accommodation at the Travelodge Hotel Bankstown. Our staff also got behind the effort by raising a further $1,556 for the cause. In addition to this effort, the club

runs two Little Wings Cash Housie sessions on Wednesday and Friday, each week, with 100 per cent of the profits going towards the fuel and maintenance of the Little Wings’ planes. Each year, International Nurses Day is celebrated, around the world on 12 May, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth. I along with all our other six Directors attended the International Nurses & Midwives Day Awards Ceremony at the BankstownLidcombe Hospital. This is the 9th year that we have supported the nurses with $40,000 so that many of them can avail of special programs to improve their nursing skills. This year the international theme was “A force for change: care effective, cost effective”. For all my directors and I it was encouraging to see that our support benefited approximately 39 nurses and how enthusiastic and appreciative they were of the club’s support. I am sure that you will agree that the nurses play a vital role and do an outstanding job at the hospital. Our builders, Paynter Dixon have begun work on expanding the Travelodge Hotel Bankstown with four additional floors. As you drive into our car park, you may have noticed a large tank structure alongside the ramp. It might interest you to know that this is an essential back-up water storage facility for us to use in the event of an emergency, so that the club does not have to depend on main’s pressure. Above the club you must have

noticed one of the largest cranes that has ever been seen on the Bankstown city skyline. Work is well underway and we expect the hotel, a new foyer and a dedicated reception area to be completed by February 2016. There is a growing preference for a variety of noodle preparations that are different to the soup noodles available outside the club. I am pleased to inform you that work on the first phase of our noodle house will begin in June/July, this year. The concept and designs are outstanding and the facility will have a noodle master actually preparing fresh noodles. We hope that our Noodle House will be open for you to enjoy during the festive season this December. Your directors and I attended the ANZAC centenary celebrations at Revesby and the Bankstown Memorial Oval on Saturday 25 April. Both events were moving and memorable. The following day we held a special Legacy Bowls Day at Bankstown Sports Bowls. I am pleased to say that thanks to the support from all who attended, we were able to raise $2,600 for our war widows.

The following members have passed away recently and to their relatives and friends may we offer our sincere condolences in their time of grief: Keith Bartley, George Docherty, Keith Ware, Richard Gonsalves, Leslie Ingram, Pathmani Selvanayagam, James Horne, James Launt, Wendy Harris, John Rolfe, John Young, Norman Thompson, Piero Galletti, John Garven, Elaine Jackson, Joan Devnie, John Ryan, Kenneth Donald, Waltraud Schwigtenberg, Douglas Almond and Wilhelm Walchshofer. The following members were reported as being in hospital and on behalf of our President, Directors and all our members we wish them a speed recovery: Maria Damianou and Constance Zammit.

The Probus Club of Bankstown meets at Bankstown Sports Club on the 3rd Monday of each month at 10am. There is a Guest Speaker at meetings talking on interesting topics and day trips are held regularly. Members of Bankstown Sports Club are welcome to join, contact Secretary, Judy Learmonth on 9644 1421. The Ladies Probus Club of Bankstown and Chester Hill meets at Bankstown Sports Club on the 2nd Monday of each month. There are guest speakers and shows and social outings are also enjoyed. Our largest club, Bankstown Sports Club, won the ‘Best Club Food’ award by popular vote recently, as part of The Daily Telegraph’s Fair Go for the West campaign in conjunction with radio station NOVA-FM. As a result, the NOVA-FM breakfast team of Fitzy and Wippa, visited the club in their 10-metre rock bus on 10 March to congratulate Executive Chef Helmut Gundendorfer and Chef de Partie Jin Hahn in the Greenfield Station Bistro kitchen.

Chief Executive Officer of Bankstown Sports Club, Mark Condi, says “We’re really excited that our members got behind the club in voting for this award and want express our thanks to them. It’s always nice to be recognised and supported for what we do. Recognition like this shows us we are on the right track.” The Fair Go for the West campaign was an initiative to highlight the strengths of western Sydney, run by The Daily Telegraph.

We offer a great range of food in all parts of the club. For affordable family dining there is the Greenfield Station Bistro; then our Italian tapas and fresh seafood restaurant Stuzzichino and Pizzeria Bellucci at La Piazza. For fine dining Platform One offers the best in fine wine and cuisine. See the review of Platform One’s new tapas menu on page 6. For those loving Asian flavours (and who doesn’t!) the Imperial Jade Palace offers modern Chinese food with a choice of live seafood. For snacks and light meals the club has two well-patronised cafes, InTouch cafe with its impressive array of sweet treats and Monkey Mania Café. Both the newer Atrium Bar and also the Total Sports Bar provide patrons with a variety of food options. To see menus from any of the club’s eateries, visit BankstownSports.com

BERKSHIRE PORK BELLY

TAP YOUR

tastebuds with tapas

The seasons have changed and so have our menus with tapas bringing some spicy delights at our ever-popular Platform One restaurant, writes InTouch Editor Sue Nelson. Today I’m in for a rare treat. I’m dining with a chef. Not just any chef – but Executive Chef Helmut Gundendorfer, the club‘s smiling tastemaker with a penchant for combining flavours and textures for maximum effect! Helmut has introduced a new change in line with our ever-changing expectations of Australian cuisine – it’s tapas at Platform One – and today we are sampling that menu. As I take in the atmosphere of the heritage train carriages, I can imagine the hiss of steam and the hustle and bustle of passengers on a chilly evening, seeking out something hearty to get them through the night. With Helmut as my guide, we start with a beautiful, warmed Kalamata (olive) sourdough with fresh butter, Cyprus black salt and pepper.

CAPE GRIM RIB EYE CUTLET

As Helmut says, the Australian palate and curiosity for trying new flavours has really hit a peak in the last few years – which is great news for us – because he is happy to deliver some exciting new flavours to the club’s patrons – without compromising on the classic favourites that always satisfy.

SPENCER GULF MUSSELS, FINGERLING PAPA BRAVAS & RODRIGUEZ CHICKEN CHORRIZO 6

Bankstown Sports InTouch

“People like to try a few different things, like to mingle and talk – try things from a few different countries – some Mediterranean and Asian flavours too. People can choose to just have a selection of tapas, or also have main courses.” Before my bread is half-gone some amazing veal and pork meatballs – ‘the soaked bread makes them fluffy’ – with fennel in a tomato passata (tomatoes, onions, sugar and balsamic) arrive. The meatballs are topped with microherbs and grated parmesan and they really hit the spot. “Especially now it’s getting colder, people are looking for food with a bit of body, some spice and heavier flavours to warm them up,” says Helmut. “If you don’t feel like tapas we still have our favourites such as the Berkshire pork belly (with seared scallops), Cape Grim rib-eye cutlet, the Barramundi fillet, seafood platter or rack of lamb.” The meatballs are whisked away and giant Sicilian green olives (olives all’ascolana) appear.

“ROLL YOUR OWN” PEKING DUCK PANCAKES

They’re hand-stuffed with pork, then crumbed and fried. The olives have been soaked to remove their salty flavour and they are one of Helmut’s favourite dishes. A squeeze of lemon and we’re into them – and they are really delicious. I have to stop Helmut from cleaning the table – we split the serving between us. Twice a year the club’s team of chefs sit together and discuss the new menu for Platform One. They toss around a variety of ideas and then, Helmut says, they take at least a day to develop and refine each dish until it’s perfect for the Platform One menu. The tapas is a super treat because you can cater to your small bird-like eaters as well as those who just want to sample multiple flavours. Our next diversion comes in the form of jamon croquetas – they are stuffed with Gruyere cheese and fried to perfection. Next comes crispy-fried baby octopus with lemon pepper, smoked paprika seasoning and chipotlé mayonnaise. This one’s a real delight and goes fantastically with the pan-seared haloumi cheese, which has a tangy mint salsa

verde on the side to really wake up the palette. To top it off Helmut brings out a brief but satisfying taste of Asia with do-it-yourself rolled Peking duck pancakes with hoisin sauce, cucumber and shallots. These have always been popular with me as the sweet saltiness of the Peking duck always sits so well with the bitey shallots and fresh, moist cucumber.

WARM JAM-FILLED DOUGHNUTS

I’m pretty much done but Helmut has another surprise in store. From the dessert menu some warm, freshly cooked, jam-filled sugar doughnuts arrive with dipping sauces of chocolate, raspberry and mango. Chef Stephen Frangeskou is apparently the one to thank for this charming innovation which reminds me of my childhood. It’s just so good I have to get a coffee too. Helmut is a great guide to the menu – but even if you can’t dine with him in person, you can still taste all of the amazing flavours he and his team have created for you at Platform One this winter. JIM HANNA WITH HIS PARENTS, SID & SAMIRA

Bankstown

BOY JOINS THE BOARD Long-time local Jim Hanna has joined Bankstown Sports Club as our newest Board Director, bringing with him the enthusiasm and passion that has made him both a successful business and family man. Born just a few blocks from Bankstown Sports Club, some might say local businessman Jim Hanna’s appointment as a Director on our Board was meant to be. Growing up, Jim enjoyed many family lunches and dinners at our club and is excited by the way it has evolved and expanded, while always remaining focused on its commitment to the local community.

“Family dominates my life. It’s a huge part of who I am. I come from a big multigenerational extended family, the Hanna family, who go back to the late ’50s in central Bankstown and are still here.” Jim Hanna – Director

Bankstown Sports InTouch

“I decided that if there was some way that I could show my warmth and appreciation for the club and the great community work that it does, then I’d be thrilled to do so,” Jim says. “The opportunity presented itself and I was quite honoured and excited about the chance to join the Board. I jumped at the chance.” Apart from a period in Canberra and abroad as a public servant in the Department of Foreign Affairs, Jim has lived and worked in the local area. He is a solicitor as well as a manager and company director within the family business, the JSN Hanna group of companies, which was established almost 50 years ago and is involved in property development, construction and project management. Jim also serves on the board of Bankstown City Aged Care. In addition to his professional experience, Jim has a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Law degree, a Graduate Diploma in Foreign Affairs and Trade, a Graduate Diploma of Law and is a member of the Law Society of New South Wales.

As Director of the club’s Board, Jim is excited about the potential for growth and contributing to its future expansion. He paid tribute to the outgoing Director, Doug Shedden, for his time in the role, during which he showed outstanding dedication and a long term commitment to the local community. “I see that the club is a diverse and multifaceted organisation with strong community roots operating across a range of services – not just entertainment and gaming but also food and accommodation. There are many future growth opportunities too. I’m really looking forward to contributing to the growth of the club in a constructive and productive way, moving into the future.” When not working, Jim likes to spend time with his wife, Elda, and their children, Yasmin and James. He enjoys movies and good food – including the incredible dishes served at our club – and is a self-confessed “sports nut” who loves watching cricket at Bankstown Oval and supporting the CanterburyBankstown Bulldogs. “Family dominates my life. It’s a huge part of who I am,” he explains. “I come from a big multi-generational extended family, the Hanna family, who go back to the late ’50s in central Bankstown and are still here. My kids are a big part of my life. There’s quite a lot to do with them: after-hours activities, homework and weekend things, so it takes a lot of time up and it’s wonderful.”

Our club jointly won the Outstanding Regional Initiative category for the ongoing support to the charity Little Wings and their ‘Helping children fly for treatment’ program. We shared the award with South Lismore Bowling and Recreation Club who also support the charity. The joint winner in this category was Club Foster. Last year, we donated $25,000 and 15 nights’ accommodation at the club’s Travelodge Hotel Bankstown for families and carers to Little Wings, in addition our staff raised a further $1,556 for the cause. Bankstown Sports Club also runs two Little Wings cash housie sessions where 100 per cent of the profits go towards the fuel and maintenance of Little Wings’ planes.

Launched by businessman and keen pilot, Kevin Robinson in 2011, Little Wings began as a weekend service but demand was so strong it quickly became a full-time commitment. Since September 2012, Little Wings has provided more than 570 free flights, transporting nearly 1300 children and their parents for life saving treatment.

A tribute to volunteers ...

THE PERFECT CATCH Retirement isn’t slowing down former electrical engineer, Larry Illic, who has volunteered his time as secretary of Bankstown Sports Fishing Club for almost two decades. For Larry Illic, being a volunteer is all about giving back to the community and he does this in more ways than one. Not only is he a local Justice of the Peace (JP) but he also helps out at church and for the past 18 years, has been the secretary of Bankstown Sports Fishing Club.

it’s all part of the job. “You’ve got to do it,” he explains. “You’ve got to let people know what’s happening, otherwise why take on a job that requires you to do it? I don’t think it is beyond the duty. People ask me for information and I need to have information.”

“I have received so much in this country that now that I’m retired it gives me pleasure to put something back into the society from which I gained,” says Larry, who immigrated to Australia in 1971 from Yugoslavia, now Serbia.

“I think sometimes the secretary’s job is a lot of work for the members and many people don’t find enough time to be able to do it. Once I started doing the job it appears they were reasonably satisfied and nobody wanted to challenge me at any given time. I just enjoyed it and as long as they are happy, I’m happy.”

“It’s a pleasure to do something for the community, giving back to the community because we all get something for free from somewhere. In particular, I enjoy it when there is a success. If we are not successful, well we try harder until it’s right.”

The former electrical engineer began fishing at the age of six and was taught by his father who was a fisherman on one of Europe’s biggest rivers, the Danube. Larry put his rod and reel aside for seven years while setting up his life in Australia. Then, in 1978, he decided to get back to fishing. In 1996, he became a member of Bankstown Sports Fishing Club, progressing to secretary in 1997. Despite claims that he goes above and beyond in his role as secretary, ensuring that members are well informed about upcoming fishing trips and weather conditions, he insists

Larry credits the support of Bankstown Sports Club and the camaraderie of the fishing club’s members for the smooth running of their activities, which have included trips to the Coral Sea and an annual competition with Bermagui Fishing Club. “I like (the) tranquility of nature. At the end of the day it’s nice to catch a fish but it doesn’t matter if you don’t, being outside is absolutely marvellous and being with really nice local people, like we have in the fishing club, is something special.” Interested in joining the fishing club? Fishing trips are conducted monthly on Saturdays and Sundays. Contact Larry on oliljuba@optusnet. com.au or 0424 341 975.

FOR THE KIDS

For a small club, Baulkham Hills Hockey Club has a lot of families willing to lend a hand to keep things running smoothly. The only way to keep a small volunteer run club going is to have a steady stream of people ready to volunteer and Baulkham Hills Hockey Club is thriving thanks to about a third of parents regularly giving up their spare time. As well as that, there are also many parents who step in to help with the occasional barbeque or social activity as a one-off, which means, regardless of how busy your life is, there is always something you can do to support the community. “We try to get to know the families and the parents within our club, to know their lifestyle and what they’re doing and then, without fail, we can normally find something for someone to do depending on their time and where they can help out,” says Baulkham Hills Hockey Club president Brett Hardiman. Volunteer roles at the club include joining the committee in positions such as President and Treasurer, coaches and team managers. For the people who give their time, the pay-off is helping nurture a love of sport and team work in children.

“I know from when I started volunteering with the club… I just found that working with the kids is such a reward in itself that I thoroughly loved it the whole time I’ve been with the club. I think that’s what most of the parents find as well, because it is a very family based club and you find that once people have been in the club for a couple of months they don’t hesitate to put up their hand and try to help – it’s just that kind of club,” explains Brett. The culture of volunteering is so strong at Baulkham Hills Hockey Club that even when players have moved to senior clubs, some come back as coaches and team managers because they enjoyed the club experience so much as juniors. Baulkham Hills Hockey is always looking for new members – all ages and all skill levels are welcome to join. ! t a h t y c n Fa We take a look at what’s hot in entertaining this season!

Really BIG Birthdays! Whether you’re turning 18 or 100 there’s nothing like a milestone birthday to bring family and friends together for fun and celebration. Birthdays come and go every year but when we reach a significant age we’re expected to throw a huge party to mark the milestone and there’s no better place to hold the celebration than at our club. Prescy Castillo did just that for her 60th birthday. She invited almost 100 friends, family and colleagues, some travelling from Canberra and even the Philippines, where she grew up, to attend her party in April. Decorations included flowers, a banner and balloons in a red and white theme. There was also plenty of music and dancing enjoyed by all. “I wanted to have a nice party because I just had a simple wedding, I didn’t have a big party,” says the Hurstville Grove local. “I told my husband I would like a big party for my 60th so it’s not depressing. I don’t like life to be boring. I’m a happy-go-lucky person and I would like my children to be that way as well. I would like them to remember my birthday.”

Birthday celebrations are thought to have originated with ancient societies and pagan beliefs. The ancient Greeks honoured the birthdays of ‘gods’ while ancient Egyptians marked the anniversary of their Pharaoh’s coronation. Pagans held birthday festivities as a way to ward off evil spirits because they believed a person was more vulnerable on days of major life changes. Christians started to recognise birthdays when Jesus’ birthday started to be celebrated on 25 December around the fourth century AD. If you would like to have your next celebration or special event at the club, contact the events team on 9722 9888 or events@bankstownsports.com. LEFT: PRESCY’S 60TH BIRTHDAY

Milestone birthdays in Australia are often first celebrated at 13, when the teenage years start or 18, when a child becomes an adult, as well as getting the right to vote and reaching the legal drinking age, and then at 21. But after 30, each decade is considered to be a big deal, however the older you get the more impressive the achievement!

Dads HELD DEAR There’s no better time to honour your Dad than Father’s Day but the first Sunday in September is most special when celebrated for the first time. In the lead up to the big day staff reflect on their first year as fathers. Despite all the advice available you never truly know what becoming a new parent is like until your first baby arrives and the emotional rollercoaster begins bringing with it everything from joy to worry. “There are no words that can express the excitement and overwhelming feeling that I had the moment when I was handed my newborn baby boy. When I held him in my arms for the first time, I realised that this little person has given me a new meaning to life,” says Charbel Al Chalfoun, Food and Beverage Attendant, when meeting his son Anthony. “I thought I was well prepared for the changes my baby would bring to our life by having read all the books and Googled pretty much everything and anything about babies but in actual fact it is a whole new learning curve with no instruction manual and changes with every moment of every day.”

“My best advice I give to new Dads out there is make sure you show support to your partner through every process, by attending ultrasounds, antenatal classes, being present at the delivery and providing help as much as you can after the baby is born – this helps to get to know your own baby,” says Charbel.

FATHER’S

DAY? Father’s Day Buffet Sunday 6 September

Celebrate Father’s Day at the Bankstown Sports Club with a hearty buffet lunch at Platform One restaurant, Sunday 6 September, adults $54 and $19 for children under 13 years. Bookings essential, call the club on 9722 9888. To see the full menu head to BankstownSports. com. Birrong Sports Club will feature a delicious authentic Italian feast in the Italian Bistro for Father’s Day, for more details see page 41 or call 9645 8666 to book. The Gallery Restaurant at Baulkham Hills Sports will also be open for Father’s Day lunch and dinner, see page 43 or call 9639 2100 to book.

For Gareth Heard, Assistant Beverage Manager and father of Matilda, it’s the prospect of guiding his daughter through life and watching her learn that amazes him most.

Treat Dad like a King with a hearty buffet lunch.

“It’s pretty cool being completely responsible for a little person,” he explains. “Seeing changes and developments as she learns is fascinating and exciting. Watching her teach herself the most basic skills is pretty remarkable.

$54 adults, $19 children (under 13 years) Bookings essential, call 9722 9888.

“The best part of becoming a Dad is thinking of all the possibility and potential that is ahead for the baby – wondering what she will be like, how her life will be and knowing that we will have a huge influence on that.” And when it comes to passing on wisdom to other first time Fathers-to-be, Gareth recommends finding what works for you and learning as you go and Charbel suggests getting involved and asking for help when you need it.

After sell-out shows in North America, the UK and Asia, The Rat Pack from Vegas are returning to Bankstown Sports Club to showcase the very best of the legendary crew. With five successful tours of Australia and New Zealand under their collective belts, tribute group The Rat Pack from Vegas are headed back down under direct from the United States by popular demand. The trio of David De Costa (Frank Sinatra), Nicholas Brooks (Sammy Davis Jr) and Johnny Edwards (Dean Martin) will appear at our club on Friday 17 July at 8.00 pm after thrilling audiences overseas in sold out shows. Accompanied by a seven-piece band, The Rat Pack from Vegas will include all the music, humour and style of The Rat Pack’s famous Vegas concerts.

The Rat Pack was originally led by actor Humphrey Bogart and his friends, including Frank Sinatra, and the name is believed to have come from a comment made by Bogart’s actress wife Lauren Bacall when she saw them return after a night of partying in Las Vegas. In the 1960s, the group was made up of Sinatra as well as Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop. Shirley MacLaine and Marilyn Monroe were among the Rat Pack mascots. Though the name Rat Pack was not used by members of the group, it was made popular by the media. Apart from their concerts they appeared in several films together, including the classic Ocean’s Eleven, which was remade in 2001 with George Clooney and Brad Pitt. Sinatra, Martin and Davis made their final film appearance together in the 1984 American comedy Cannonball Run II. Not just entertainers, The Rat Pack had an influence on politics as well by campaigning for the Democrats and President John F. Kennedy and influencing desegregation in Las Vegas, as they refused to perform at or visit venues that did not allow African-Americans. Don’t miss your chance to relive the glory of these unforgettable stage and screen legends when The Rat Pack from Vegas returns to The Theatre on Friday 17 July. Tickets are $35 available online or at main reception.

You don’t have to go far to sample the world’s best whiskey with Tasmania’s Sullivans Cove Distillery available at our Atrium Bar. The distillery recently built on their 2014 success of winning “The World’s Best Single Malt” at the World Whiskies Awards by being named Craft Whisky Producer of the Year at this year’s awards. “We’ve made a big effort to stock the finest Australian top shelf names,” says Michael Clancy, Bankstown Sports Club’s Operations and Beverage Manager. “To see these whiskey distillers winning such wonderful international recognition is great for them, and for us, because we’re one of the few places you can sample their wares.” The popular drink is just one of many premium beverages available at our Atrium Bar, which also caters to lovers of boutique beer with a selection of 7 craft beers available.

If you’re new to craft beer, the staff are happy to make suggestions. “We try to provide an opportunity for people to experience new flavours in our Atrium Bar with gateway beers, which are beers that aren’t too strong flavoured to help them make a choice of what they might like in a craft beer. So, different lagers, wheat beers, summer ales and pale ales.” Michael says. For those who aren’t beer drinkers there are cocktails, 15 premium vodkas, over 30 premium whiskeys, and a range of tequilas, gins, rums and cognacs available. With a new season well underway, the new tapas menu is another great reason to come along to our bar. The winter menu features grilled haloumi, pulled pork slider, a funky version of macaroni and cheese and a cheese plate… all perfect accompaniments to our Atrium Bar’s fine beverage options.

TOTALLY WIRED FOR

S POR T

With winter upon us it’s time to come in out of the cold and watch some momentous sporting events at the Total Sports Bar.

“I feel safe in the club and it’s a nice atmosphere. I’m always seeing people I know. Plus I live close by so I can take the courtesy bus home.”

The Telstra NRL Premiership season is already proving to be a very interesting contest this year, so there will plenty of opportunities to watch the games on the giant screens in the Total Sports Bar between now and the Grand Final on Sunday 4 October. One of the people who will be keenly watching the League games is Total Sports Bar regular Sydney Pooley. A local and club member since 1971, Sydney joined the club as he was a member and player with the local tennis club. A pharmacist for many years but now retired, Sydney comes to the Total Sports Bar regularly to meet up with friends, watch sport and have a few beers.

He says, “I feel safe in the club and it’s a nice atmosphere. I’m always seeing people I know. Plus I live close by so I can take the courtesy bus home.” Sydney likes to watch the cricket and follows the Bulldogs in the Rugby League. For AFL fans, a delayed start to the season due to the finalisation of the Cricket World Cup has not dampened their spirits and the finals series will begin in mid-September and culminate in the Toyota AFL Grand Final on Saturday 3 October. For diehard Rugby Union fans, the long-awaited Rugby World Cup kicks off in England on 18 September and runs through till 1 November. Australian fans will be watching with interest in the hope they blitz their long-time (and multiple) opponents: New Zealand, South Africa and of course, England. Go Australia! Doing the RIGHT THING Recycling is one of the easiest things we can do to protect the environment but do it wrong and your hard work could end up in landfill. We show you how to get it right. Locals in the Bankstown City Council area have been recycling with their yellow bins for almost 20 years, which means being green is now a part of daily life. Despite this there is still some confusion about what can go in the yellow bin, resulting in a loss of time and money. “Many people aren’t aware that the first stage of our recycling process is a quick manual sort by workers to remove large, obvious items before it goes through the mechanical process,” says Margaux Park, Bankstown City Council’s Resource Recovery Education Officer. “Because of the volume of recycling being processed and the speed of the conveyor belt, not all contamination can be removed at this stage. When items, like plastic bags, go through the mechanical process they can jam the lines, cause lengthy processing delays and costing a lot of money to fix.” Since the objects removed during the manual sorting process end up being sent to landfill, it pays to get it right in the first place. To remember what can be recycled, keep in mind that most container recyclables are packaging and rigid or hard, not scrunchy or soft. If a recyclable item has had food in it rinse 38

Bankstown Sports InTouch

it out, however, it does not need to be completely clean. Labels can be left on. But if you’re still not sure about things such as envelopes with windows, well, they can be recycled as can pizza boxes if the food is removed… but takeaway coffee cups, Tupperware and paper towels can’t. “The biggest problem we find is when a household lacks an internal sorting system for their waste. This makes it hard to make sure the right things go into the right bin. The easiest thing a household can do is have a separate cardboard box or reusable bag to collect recyclables loosely in the kitchen and empty that regularly into the big bin,” adds Margaux. While you’re doing your bit for the planet at home, your club is also being green with a number of sustainability initiatives in place to show the community that we place an importance on operating in the best interests of the environment. They range from Australia’s largest indoor composter which recycles kitchen waste to a more energy efficient chiller system energy efficient lighting upgrades. At Baulkham Hills Sports Club, the emphasis on sustainability includes solar panels on the club’s roof and composting kitchen waste too.

Recycling DO’S & DON’TS ✔ Do

✘ Do not

Sort your recycling at home before putting it into your yellow bin

Recycle takeaway coffee cups, Tupperware or paper towels

Rinse recyclables that have had food in them

Soft and scrunchy items are generally not recyclable

VERSUS FOOD Warm up this winter with new hearty dishes at The Italian Bistro at Birrong Sports or have a bit of fun and try some ‘extreme eating’ with the bistro’s Spaghetti Challenge! Consider yourself a champion eater? Think you could down a kilo of spaghetti bolognese and still have room for garlic bread? Well The Italian Bistro at Birrong Sports is giving you the chance to prove it with its Spaghetti Challenge. At the time of writing only one person – not including two of the Bistro’s chefs – has managed to defeat the scrumptious feast – even though some 50 people have attempted it. “Everything has to be polished off the plate. It’s ridiculous – there’s so much pasta but everybody comes in and they’re up for a challenge,” says Carla Libertini, The Italian Bistro’s manager. “If they finish it in 45

minutes they get a dinner voucher worth $100, a drink from the bar and a spot on our little wall of fame.” The Spaghetti Challenge is expected to run until October. Until then, if you’re not up for a kilogram of pasta, why not taste test the new menu? It still has your favourites but include a few new dishes to keep things interesting. As well as that, keep your eye on the specials board for hearty winter dishes like soup, lamb and Osso Bucco. These change every two weeks, so you’ll want to keep coming back to see just what’s new on the day. Bellissimo!

SWING IN TO

BAULKHAM HILLS Many happy

RETURNS GUIDO!

Guido Zanella recently celebrated his 90th birthday with friends and staff of the Baulkham Hills Sports Club. Guido is one of the foundation members of the club, joining in 1973 when the club was in its infancy. He migrated to Australia from the province of Trento, Italy in 1954 and is one of nine children. Guido first worked on the construction of electric power transmission towers before taking up his first love as a chef at the Australia Hotel in Sydney in 1965. Guido’s passion was soon to emerge and in 1967 he opened his own restaurant in Epping called The Purple Gondola where he and his wife successfully traded for many happy years. After selling his restaurant, Guido worked as a chef at the Masonic Club in Parramatta, the Marconi Club in Bossley Park and also at Blacktown Workers Club, from where he finally retired in 1981. Soon after joining Baulkham Hills Sports

Club, Guido formed a lasting friendship with Jim Orchin who has become known as the “President of Prime Time at the Club”. Guido is a well-loved member of the club and is never far from his close group of friends for an afternoon drink and some spirited conversation. Happy Birthday Guido!

ROLL INTO

BANKSTOWN SPORTS BOWLS Let’s remember

NOT TO FORGET Generosity flowed at the annual Bankstown Bowls Anzac Day fundraiser which helped raise $2,700 for Legacy.

A day after the nation paused to reflect on the sacrifice of Australian men and women in the Defence Force and 100 years after our troops went into battle at Gallipoli in World War I, Bankstown Sports Bowls Men’s Bowling Club players did their bit for the families left behind with a social mixed bowls day fundraiser for Legacy.

ABOVE: BANKSTOWN SPORTS CHAIRMAN JOHN MURRAY WITH LEGACY CHAIRMAN ALAN RAWLINSON

of Legacy. “The support at the bowls fundraiser was very overwhelming, because Legacy’s so dear to me I get quite passionate about it. People were really good, they listened intently to what I was saying and this year I felt it, more so than ever, seeing it was the centenary.

Despite the rain on Sunday 26 April, there was a strong turnout and a generous spirit which helped to raise $2,700.

“A lot of people often say ‘Lest We Forget’ and I say let’s remember, not forget. Without those people going to war and fighting for us we probably wouldn’t be where we are today so we owe them a great deal.”

“Without the help of the Bankstown Bowls we’d be lost, we’re very grateful to them,” says Alan Rawlinson, Bankstown Division Chairman

Bankstown Legacy supports more than 700 people in the region, including World War II widows, by helping with medical, transport,

financial and counselling needs as well as providing outings and events to combat social isolation. “I hope the Anzac Day social mixed bowls fundraiser continues and gets bigger each year. When you put a call out and people know the money’s going to Legacy, there aren’t too many people who will say no and I think that comes down to the awareness of it. Legacy needs help because we get no government funding – any money we get is from donations and fundraising.”
