From the editor So many adventures, so little time… that’s what we’ve filled this issue with, all sorts of discoveries for you, tiny hidden gems all over Joburg, just waiting to be explored. There are the lesser spotted (!) haunts along Jan Smuts that offer an exciting taste of what’s on in the art world – as good as those further along the road and around the corner in Keyes Avenue. This is the other part of Rosebank’s Art Mile, also home to fabulous décor and accessory stores, great places to eat or spend the evening. Whether you choose to let it all hang out at Saigon Suzy’s karaoke bar, or find the hidden door to Sin + Tax, live it up at MESH, or enjoy fine dining at Marble, it’s all there waiting for you in our Cool District on page 64. The iconic Goodman Gallery, which we featured as part of the Art Mile, also offered us a glimpse into the work of iconic South African photographer

David Goldblatt. The gallery shared a selection of the cameraman’s photographs with us, and we have put these memorable images together as a tribute to the man who documented South Africa without adding his personal commentary. By doing that, Goldblatt has given us a true, unbiased image of those times. Goldblatt passed away in June this year, and we have dedicated our Photo Essay to his memory. Take a look on page 36. Even when the story is a serious one, like our Big Read on plastic waste on page 26, there are positive discoveries that make us ever hopeful. International star Pharrell Williams has partnered with Bionic Yarn, which produces yarn made out of – you guessed it – plastic waste, transforming what is a threat to the oceans into fashionable jeans with G-Star RAW. Sneaker brand adidas is doing the same with its Ultraboost X Parley shoes, and, closer to home, Kgoshigadi is manufacturing Nandi Pads to ensure that underprivileged girls all over the country have

DAVID GOLDBLATT reusable and affordable feminine products to use that aren’t plastic. A two-fold blessing – offering girls something to wear to school that is affordable instead of them having to stay home, and doing away with plastic at the same time. Travel gems this issue include Shipwreck Lodge on the extraordinarily beautiful Skeleton Coast in Namibia, stunning St Helena island and Europe’s traditional Christmas markets. Fine food and new places to eat are always great discoveries, and this issue we’re tempting you with fish restaurants, al fresco eateries, places to eat the best steak in town, Jewish fare, new establishments that have everybody talking, and much more. As summer sneaks up on us, take a look at our great selection of places to picnic, party, enjoy the good weather, grab some culture or entertain the kids. It’s all there waiting for you in these pages. So take a dip into our offerings – and enjoy.

Legendary photographer A legend, not only because of his magical photographs, but also for his humility, David Goldblatt showcased one of the most abhorrent times in South African history without ever taking a side. His images became indelible memories in the minds of the world and those who suffered through apartheid. We mourn his passing.

MALIBONGWE TYILO

All about art Mali boasts an artfocused YouTube channel called The Narrative

While water restrictions are still a reality for Cape Town, the good news is that the city has seen enough rainfall over winter to ensure residents don’t have to worry about Day Zero in 2018 or 2019. Businesses are also hoping to see a spike in tourism this coming summer. In case you’re headed that way, we caught up with ex-Joburg resident, multimedia content producer Malibongwe Tyilo and asked him to share his guide to ‘summering’ in Cape Town. He lived in Joburg before moving to the Mother City, as a writer (and more recently a videographer) focused on fashion, art, design and culture, so Malibongwe has had ample opportunity to sample all that Joburg has to offer as well as that ‘quality of life’ the Mother City is known for.

WHERE+WEAR WHEN IT COMES TO GROOMING, LOOKING AND FEELING GREAT IS NOT JUST ABOUT SLAPPING ON EXPENSIVE MOISTURISER AND FRAGRANCE

1

ELIZABETH ARDEN PREVAGE SERUM

Possibly the best thing about working for years in the magazine industry is the amount of beauty products one comes across. My favourite has undoubtedly been the Elizabeth Arden Prevage Anti-ageing Daily Serum. Never mind the gendered marketing – it is 2018 after all – this stuff gives me an instant glow that keeps people thinking I’m much younger than my actual 40 years.

2

6 4 JEAN PAUL GAULTIER FOR MEN

I was a ‘90s fashion-obsessed teenager and, to me, Monsieur Gaultier was a god. As soon as I started buying my own fragrances, I naturally gravitated towards the Jean Paul Gaultier scents. I love Le Male’s gentle sweetness and warmth, as well as contrasting combinations of fruits and spices. Think cumin, oranges, vanilla, tonka bean, as well as mint, lavender and bergamot.

NIKE FREE RN MOTION FLYKNIT

I’ve never truly felt comfortable in formal shoes. In fact, I own one pair that I wear probably once a year on occasions where I truly must. I live in my sneakers, and I love the adaptable kind you can work out in and wear as a fashion style. My current pair is these very lightweight Nike Flyknits. They are as amazing on a run on the promenade as they are with a pair of skinny chinos.

3

CANON 80D

As a digital content creator, I need a reasonable camera that can go from still to casual videos to pro-quality videos without breaking the bank. My Canon 80D has been so good to me.

16 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

5

EUCERIN SUN CREME-GEL

Experts say we should all be wearing sunscreen every day, wherever we are. While there are doubts as to whether anti-ageing products actually work, one thing that the specialists seem to agree on is the importance of sunscreen. Every. Single. Day. Sun or no sun.

PURE CLAY GLOW MASK

Every Sunday I make sure to take time out for a face mask sesh. I love the results from this clay mask; my pores always look much less visible afterwards, giving my skin a smooth look. I also love how this mask feels on the face as it dries, almost as though it’s tightening my skin.

7

On Trend

ZHIYUN SMOOTH Q

I can’t always have my camera around, and sometimes something pops up that just needs to be documented for use later. My cell phone gimbal (camera stabiliser) has saved me more times than I can count. Snap your phone on and simply point. The mechanism in the gimbal will make sure your footage looks super smooth.

ALL ABOUT MALI Malibongwe has lived many lives, working in fashion, lifestyle and magazines. He’s now involved in amateur video production. Catch some of his work on magazine digital platforms, or follow his Instagram stories @malibongwe for what are, in his own words, “unnecessarily overedited videos and embarrassing monologues”.

GLIMPSE | DAY TRIPS

3PM

For another bout of culture, I’d head for Maboneng to The Centre for the Less Good Idea at Arts on Main. Founded by world-renowned South African artist William Kentridge, this space supports experimental, collaborative and interdisciplinary projects. 8PM

A TAKE ON TWO CITIES ONCE A DIEHARD JOBURG RESIDENT, AND NOW A TRIED AND TRUE LOVER OF ALL THINGS CAPE TOWN, MALIBONGWE TYILO GIVES US A TASTE OF WHAT HE LOVES MOST ABOUT EACH CITY

JOBURG

Che Argentine Grill in the Maboneng Precinct has been around for a while, and the reason I love it is entirely carnivorous. Meat lovers won’t be disappointed with the quality or quantity of meat on offer. And while Maboneng might not be a big deal for Joburg residents, for a Capetonian, a day in Maboneng is always a treat. 11PM

Time to party, so I’d head for The Tennis Club. It’s off the beaten track at what was once The Ellis Park Tennis Club, now reimagined into a unique social club that hosts underground-style parties featuring edgy experimental artists. Follow its social media pages to find out what’s next.

If there was some kind of competition between all the cities in South Africa to judge the best when it comes to the culture scene, it would be a tough competition between Jozi and the Mother City, and I doubt there would be a clear winner. Even though I’ve long chosen the latter as home, there’s still an incredible energy that I love plugging into every time I visit ‘die stad van goud’. 10AM

A perfect morning would entail visiting one of two newish additions to Joburg’s culture scene, both of which demonstrate embracing technology in the creation of art. TMRW Digital Gallery in Keyes Art Mile blends augmented, virtual and mixed reality technology to create immersive art experiences that live in the three-dimensional environment as well as the digital space. Definitely worth checking out for a glimpse into the future of art.

Clockwise from top left The Royale Craighall; Zeitz MOCAA; The Creamery; Norval Foundation; Mulberry & Prince; Food at Mulberry & Prince; Che Argentine Grill; The Centre for the Less Good Idea; TMRW Digital Gallery

1PM

Lunch would be at The Royale in Craighall Park. I can’t decide what I love most about this space – the food, the cordial staff, the décor or just the overall vibe. It’s got a little bit of Cape Town and a bit of the Joburg I remember from my student days packed into a trendy package that’s as delightful as its deep fried cauliflower wings. I highly recommend visiting this spot for a chilled Sunday lunch session when they have a DJ and cocktail happy hour. 18 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

FATHER OF COFFEES Father Coffee is an espresso bar in Rosebank just round the corner from Keyes Avenue that is well worth visiting. They roast the beans on the premises, too, so you can purchase some and enjoy their coffee at home. www.fathercoffee.co.za

CAPE TOWN

Che Argentine Grill cheargentinegrill.co.za

Home to a plethora of museums, galleries, restaurants and markets, there is more than enough to do in Cape Town in 24 hours.

The Tennis Club 083 781 7406 Oranjezicht City Farm www.ozcf.co.za

10AM

The Oranjezicht City Farm market is held every Saturday in Granger Bay, right next to the V&A Waterfront. Expect fresh organic produce from local small and micro-farmers, as well as breads, eggs, dairy products and loads of artisanal foods. Market Day is every Saturday from 8.30am to 2pm. 2PM

The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art African opened just a year ago. Located at the V&A

Waterfront, it is the largest museum of contemporary African art in the world. Let that sink in. Contemporary art in this case refers to work made in the 21st century. Designed by worldrenowned ‘starchitecht’ Thomas Heatherwick, the building itself is a must-see work of art. 4PM

Opened in April 2018, the Norval Foundation is the second major museum to open in Cape Town within the space of a year. One of the things that sets it apart from the Zeitz is that, in addition to contemporary African art, it also has one of the leading collections of South African art from the 20th century. IN-BETWEEN EXPLORING…

The ‘schweet life’ is my description of The Creamery, which has branches all over the city. It’s Cape Town’s go-to for natural made-fromscratch ice cream using locally sourced ingredients. I also suggest My Sugar, a shop I have a love-hate relationship with. Perhaps the most delicious and dangerous offering on their menu, inbetween all the artisanal chocolate, is a selection of stuffed doughnuts. 8PM

Mulberry & Prince is a kitchen and bar set-up with a seasonal menu that focuses on a wide range of foodie options based on edgy modern American-style cuisine. Whilst it’s very stylish, the minimalist interior is relaxed and welcoming.

efore you read on, grab your phone and head straight to Seth’s personal Instagram account, @seth_shezi. Look at the carefully curated images of his sun-kissed lifestyle at some of the most beautiful spots that Cape Town has to offer. And if that doesn’t make you envious, carry on to his other Instagram account, a blogazine as he calls it, @ capetownbest. It has nearly 2,000 posts of exquisite meals from

work under Shezi.Ink, as well as signing collabs and campaign deals for my influencer work. Evenings vary. On days when I have no events, I drag myself to gym for a boxing class with my trainer. Dinners I try to keep as private time for myself and my partner, friends or family. After dinner is when I do my writing work for the various magazines I contribute to. I also review what my team did during the day while I was out. All through the day, if I’m not posting some of my Instagram work, I post to keep myself entertained while I juggle all these balls.” Originally from Durban, Seth has been living in Cape Town for 15 years, since he studied at UCT: “Studying literally right below Table Mountain and Devil’s Peak and having to walk up towards it every day for lectures was an oddly spiritual and metaphoric experience. When he is not busy on some getaway, be it local, Mexico City or Italy, he always seems to be feasting on gloriously plated dishes, all while dressed sharply, seemingly with enough time to take and edit the perfect snap. Exhausted by my envy, I had to ask: “How Mr Shezi. How? What does an average day look like in your life? What do you actually do?” To which he laughs, then sighs, before responding: “There are no

Outside of that, he also sits on a few judging and advisory panels within hospitality and performs trend research by way of travelling the world. Oh, and he designs travel itineraries for “high profile individuals who want private escapes”. Naturally, I want to compare notes. So I ask him, if I had to recommend five things that a friend from say, Joburg, absolutely had to do while in Cape Town, what would they be? Says Seth: “I’d say a hike up Lion’s Head will never get tired. It’s the best view of the city and you get to see Table Mountain almost at eye level. And the locals love to do this, so it’s not a tourist trap at

all. Dinners at The Shortmarket Club or La Tête are a must.” I see we’re on the same page here. “Do visit Gallery MOMO and WHATIFTHEWORLD,” he continues. “If time permits, visit the newly opened Norval Foundation with restaurant and gardens. Lunch must be in the Winelands – Chefs Warehouse and Canteen at Maison Estate and La Petite Colombe are my current favourites. While in Franschhoek, stop over at a few farms for wine tasting; it always tastes better at the source. I recommend Le Lude and Haut Espoir. Most Joburg folks have been told about Asoka for drinks, but add to that list SOUK, Yours Truly and The Gin Bar.” Well, there you go. I can’t promise that your pictures will have the same ‘like-magnet’ quality that Seth’s images have, but one can hope. No?

QMS Medicosmetics Relax-O-Firm Mask

To celebrate Spring, CHANEL is offering a trio of olfactory adventures, a singular collection of fragrances that we can’t wait to get our hands on. Called Les Eaux de Chanel, the three fragrances evoke the scent of faraway places on the skin, plunging the wearer into unfamiliar territory with remarkable, immediate and lasting freshness. These unexpected sensory adventures fire up the imagination and transport us at high speed to a different, magical location. Each of the fragrances is inspired by one of Gabrielle Chanel’s favourite places and were created by perfumer Olivier Polge. They conjure up an image of dropping everything and heading off to the coast or the countryside, to unchartered territory. The collection is woven with Sicilian and Calabrian citrus, forming a light, airy scent trail. They include Paris-Deauville, which was inspired by what Polge described as “a weekend in the country”; Paris-Venise – the perfumer’s “gateway to the Orient” and ParisBiarritz, which evokes water – the sea. The collection of three fragrances will be available in South Africa from September.

Then there’s sportswear giant, adidas. The adidas X Parley collaboration started in 2015; it intercepts plastic waste before it makes its way into the oceans. The plastic is recycled into what’s known as Parley Ocean Plastic, and is used in the manufacturing of adidas products like the Ultraboost X Parley footwear. Parley ocean plastic “allows us to turn trash into gold, to give purpose to waste and create a climate of change,” explains Cyrill Gutsch, founder of Parley. The plastic is recycled and used to create shoes rather than lie as waste in our oceans. To create one pair of adidas Ultraboost X Parley shoes, an average of 11 plastic bottles is used. That’s 11 less plastic bottles heading out to sea per every pair of shoes manufactured. It may sound quite small, but when you consider that by the end of 2017, adidas had produced over one million pairs of footwear that contained Parley Ocean Plastic, you can see that it is having an impact. For 2018, the brand has set itself a goal of five million pairs of shoes, which will see up to ensure quality control in each step of the process. WOMEN TAKE THE LEAD

In South Africa, three out of 10 girls miss an entire week of school every month (that’s 150 weeks of their total school career) due to not being able to afford menstruation management products like sanitary pads. This results in young girls dropping out of school altogether, as they simply cannot catch up on their schoolwork. This situation is prevalent across the whole of Africa. UNICEF estimates that over 100 million schoolgirls miss school for this very reason, every month. ‘Kgoshigadi’, which means ‘Queen’ in the South African language sePedi, is a social enterprise that seeks to positively impact the lives of women and girls throughout Africa. The project sees mini-factories set up where local unemployed women are hired to manufacture and sell Nandi Pads. These are biodegradable, disposable and affordable sanitary pads. The initiative first launched in 2012 to address the issue of menstruationrelated absenteeism in girls from low-income families in the Soshanguve township of South Africa. At first, sanitary pad donations were collected, but this project has since evolved to create a more sustainable solution. In her lifetime, the average woman creates between 125kg to 150kg of feminine product waste. Normal pads are not biodegradable and this causes serious environmental degradation. Nandi pads, however, are made using an innovative combination of natural fibres and agricultural waste. This combination is converted into hygienic raw material that guarantees the production of safe and affordable feminine hygiene products. Finally, it seems that the world is asking the question, “If plastic was made to last a lifetime, why do we only use it once?” 30 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

ugust was Women’s Month, a celebration of women, in particular their strength of character, their outspoken views, their femininity and unshakable beliefs. But women deserve more than just one month to restore their rightful place in society. Their voices deserve to be heard, especially when they’re talking about gender equality in the business world, in society and in every culture. Which is why we have chosen to put South African-born actress Charlize Theron on our cover for the September issue of Joburg Style. We are extending the celebration of women for as long as it takes for their voices to be

heard. “I just now refuse to be a part of anything that doesn’t feel like it reflects the truth, not just in women but in storytelling,” she has been quoted as saying. This Oscar-winning super star is extremely outspoken when it comes to her views on rape, gender equality and female empowerment. Our South African princess is certainly not shy to air her views on everything from equal pay to AIDS, and everything in-between. Many of the roles she has played and the movies she has directed include powerful feminine archetypes, roles in which she transforms herself from the sweet blonde beauty we all know into a nasty, sometimes sinister woman. Her first depiction of something other than a glamorous star was in Monster, which she produced in 2003. She played serial killer Aileen Wuornos, a role that won her an Oscar for Best Actress. Facial prosthetics certainly assisted in transforming her into the monster she portrayed, but it was her undeniable acting skills that really did the trick. Other equally diverse female roles include everything from the selfish Mavis in Young Adult in 2011, the traumatised Libby in Dark Places in 2015 and the deadly

A mother of two adopted children, a fêted movie star who is the epitome of glamour and chic, and who has been endorsed by the likes of Dior fragrance J’Ador, Charlize Theron is an anomaly. Who would have expected this pretty meisie from Benoni to be such a strong voice for women and women’s rights? For standing up for women and literally baring her soul on screen? She’s one of a new breed of celebrities, a collection of women who take no nonsense, who aren’t

ashamed to be seen pared down and unglamorous, make-up free and victimised by society. She’s one of those stars who is celebrated for their strong opinions and modern take on the world. Like Madonna before her and, more recently, Kristen Stewart, she epitomises the modern woman. Something we should celebrate all year round, not just one month a year.

MAD MAX

WATCH OUT FOR TULLY In this 2018 movie, which was on screen to tie in with Mother’s Day, Charlize plays Marlo, mother of two with another on the way. The story is an earnest, raw look at motherhood, and shines a light on just how impossibly tough and exhausting it can be to be a mom. The actress convincingly portrays an exhausted mother with a vulnerability and humour that is charming and to the point.

orn in Randfontein in 1930, David Goldblatt was the son of Lithuanian immigrants. From the age of 18 he started taking photographs of everything that surrounded him – people, structures and landscapes – focusing his camera on aspects of apartheid over the decades. He documented South African blacks working in the mines or travelling under racist laws that restricted their movements. He also photographed whites in their privileged capacity, and interactions between black and white people that depicted how South Africa was distinctly “abnormal and abhorrent”. “I was very interested in the events that were taking place in the country as a citizen but, as a photographer, I’m not particularly interested, and I wasn’t then, in photographing the moment that something happens. I’m interested in the conditions that give rise to events,” he once explained. Described by Liza Essers, the Director of the Goodman Gallery, as “a legend, a teacher, a national icon, and a man of absolute integrity”, Goldblatt was renowned as a documenter of the world he lived in. Throughout his career, his photographs were exhibited all

over the world in museums as well as in newspapers. Earlier this year, in honour of his work, the Pompidou Centre in Paris held a critically acclaimed retrospective entitled Goldblatt. Another exhibition will be held posthumously in Australia in October, at the MCA Sydney. In 1988 Goldblatt was the first South African to be given a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Then, in 2001, a retrospective of his work over the past half century entitled David Goldblatt: 51 Years toured various museums and galleries worldwide. A year later he was one of the very few South African artists to exhibit at Documenta II in Kassel in Germany. This was followed by another exhibition at Documenta 12 in 2007 in the same location. During his career, Goldblatt held solo exhibitions in New York at both the Jewish Museum and the New Museum. His work was included in an exhibition entitled ILLUMInations at the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011 and has also been featured in shows at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Barbican Centre in London. Most major international museums have included Goldblatt’s images in collections, including the South African National Gallery; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; the Victoria and Albert Museum in London; the Pompidou, Paris; Tate, London; Inhotim in Brazil; the Art Institute of Chicago; and the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. 40 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

Goldblatt has received numerous awards over the years. In 2006, he received the Hasselblad award and in 2009 he was the recipient of the Henri Cartier-Bresson Award. He won the 2013 ICP Infinity Award and, in 2016, he was awarded the Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres by the Ministry of Culture in France. An agreement was signed recently with the Yale University Art Gallery, transferring Goldblatt’s entire archive of negatives to the university. In addition, a digital archive of this esteemed photograher’s work will be created in South Africa and made available to the public for free through an initiative named the Photographic Legacy Project. On hearing of Goldblatt’s death, President Cyril Ramaphosa released a statement expressing his heartfelt condolences. It included the following words: “Our country remains proud of his contribution to the portrayal of its life through the medium of photography and for leaving an indelible mark in our inclusive literary culture.” Rest in peace, David Goldblatt. ngels on Bikes is a collective of all-women riders formed to build a sisterhood of female bikers. Most of the women belong to regional motorcycle clubs such as Soweto’s Hoodratz MCC. These strong women grace Joburg’s streets on their superbikes and cruisers, offering a refreshing reflection of the growing economic independence of urban African women and the diversity of experience available to women in the city. Motorcycles are exhilarating, and bikers are a striking mixture of courage and composure. While the impetus for biking varies among the ladies, the freedom of the open air and road drives them all. “I am a biker for life, it’s my therapy,” says Star Lady, aka Nelisiwe. The Hoodratz MCC secretary fell in love with bikes after she spent a weekend riding Harleys with her best friend on a trip to Bloemfontein in 2010. “Biking is where I experienced true sisterhood. I remember a trip to Nelspruit I thought I might miss because I was a bit cash-strapped and the ladies came together and sorted me out,” she says, reflecting on camaraderie in the female biking community. Riding with the ladies is awe-inspiring; they obliterate expectation and misconceptions, their power captures the attention of gobsmacked pedestrians who immediately begin to clap or blow kisses. “My own prejudices about motorcycles disappeared the moment I mounted one and felt the speed, the adrenaline and the crisp wind – such sweet, scintillating liberation. Terror gripped me for a moment as I stepped up, but excitement and pure thrill followed. The open air and speed are totally addictive. It’s the most refreshing experience, and the leather pants and boots make it all the more potent.” The public perception around biking is shifting. While traditionally

it was the stronghold of aged, bearded masculinity, it has become a part of modern celebrations and an inspiration to Joburgers, who respond with curiosity and excitement at the sight and sounds of the bikers. The positive response to the women on bikes from other women is heartwarming. Twin B, aka Busisiwe Sithole, recalls a moment she had with an older lady who told her how she wished she had been a biker when she was younger, but time and circumstance did not allow. Twin B is a member of Soweto’s Hoodratz MCC; she lost her husband, Barry, in a motorcycle accident in 2015, yet she continues to ride because it reconnects her with him. It may seem counter-intuitive that she would get back on the bike after such tragedy, but she met Barry at Hoodratz and the love of superbikes and speed is something they shared. “I was scared to ride after Barry passed, but I had to. I feel him with me when I ride,” she explains. Entering Busi and Nelisiwe’s homes offers a warmer perspective of each of the women. Both are mothers, and their biking is integrated into their social and community lives. “I’ve met so many different people through my riding and have gained a community and better riding skills as well,” says Busi. “My neighbours hate the

noise, though,” she admits. Nelisiwe threw her son a biker-themed first birthday. Many members of her club attended, just as support, she says. “Bikers take care of each other; we don’t drive past someone who is stuck; we’ll stop and help. And, if you’re hurt, the community will circulate a message to your family and do their best to ensure you get immediate medical attention,” she says. Women riding motorcycles in a society pervaded by inequality is a result of the political and economic agency gained by African women in Joburg. These women fuel the aspirations of other young women to establish their own independence. And the sisterhood is growing and debunking myths of feminine fragility with every rally and ride. The skill and self-possession required to manage a motorcycle are handled with grace and elegance by these ladies, and they’re representing confidence and empowerment to all who are lucky enough to witness them.

WHY WOMEN RIDE BIKES A survey commissioned by Harley-Davidson in the US revealed the following… • More than 33 percent of riders reported feeling less stressed after riding. • 74 percent believed their lives had improved since they started riding bikes. • More than 50 percent of riders cite their motorbikes as a key source of happiness. • 35 percent reported always feeling confident since they started riding.

It’s all about the craziness, the passion,” says 33-year-old Christos Adonis Droganis, aka BBoy Christos, from the crew Demolition Squad. Christos started b-boying in 1998 when he was 15. “Back then there was no b-boy scene in Joburg.” Christos’s cousin had heard about a club in Hillbrow, Reality, where they ‘did’ b-boying on a Monday and Wednesday. “I used to love doing handstands and flips, so I went through one night. I was taught by the now legendary graffiti artist Gogga, and in 2000, I formed my own crew, Demolition Squad.” Quaid Jones, aka JS 1, is a 23-year-old b-boy from the crew Artistic Intelligence. “My dad was a b-boy. In 1983 and ’84, he was probably part of the best crew in Zimbabwe. He tried to teach me when I was in Grade 3 and 4, and I learnt a few moves, but I wasn’t really that interested. It wasn’t until high school when I wanted to be the cool kid that I asked my dad to teach me again. I started a crew in Zimbabwe called Swisher House and, when I moved to South Africa, I met with the founders of Artistic Intelligence, who asked me to join them.” B-boying is all about the camaraderie. “As a b-boy, no matter what country you visit, you’re guaranteed to find another b-boy,” says Christos. “You’ll find them and they’ll find you, and when you link up, it’s as if you’ve been friends forever.” “You don’t need money to b-boy,” he adds. “I guess that’s why a lot of b-boys don’t come from much.” When b-boys travel, they have host families who take them in. “The moms will take in seven guys they don’t know. They don’t have much, but they’ll treat us better than people who have a lot. It’s really humbling.” When not b-boying what do these b-boys do? “Every b-boy has There’s so much more to b-boying than performing. “You become a something they have to do on the side – like a day job. These are the kids of the b-boying future.” Christos reflects, “When I was a young kid, I was shy. I couldn’t speak to people and I had a huge complex about myself. B-boying was my only outlet, my way of talking.” Has b-boying hit a plateau? Where to from here? “B-boying is definitely not dying out, it’s growing for sure,” says Quaid. “But it’s up to

the individual,” Christos adds. “I see a lot of kids get into it and once they go to university they stop. It happens to everyone – the harder you get hit, you’ve got to get up. You come up with a gig that people can’t say no to, and you sell yourself. The young guys are the ones who need to take over now, like Quaid.” The b-boys know how to give back, too. In 2010, Artistic Intelligence started a CSI project called Project Smile. “We’ve visited underprivileged schools all over the place. It’s so good to give back to the community. You’re not just teaching, you’re changing lives, and it’s one of the best feelings ever,” says Quaid. How about the b-boy style? “The street style fashion you see today is derived from b-boys – tracksuit pants, joggers. B-boys were wearing these 15 years ago because they’re so comfortable to break in. We all have our own individual style, but come together to do one thing, one goal,” Christos says. If you have to put a trademark on a b-boy, it would be sneakers. “All b-boys go crazy for awesome shoes. That’s just how we roll. We’re all sneaker heads,” Quaid explains. “B-boying is a lifestyle. It’s the best thing that could have happened to me,” says Quaid with a grin. “So,” Christos turns to Quaid, “Are we sessioning after this?”

B-BOYING IS ALL ABOUT THE CAMARADERIE. “AS A B-BOY, NO MATTER WHAT COUNTRY YOU VISIT, YOU’RE GUARANTEED TO FIND ANOTHER B-BOY,” SAYS CHRISTOS

ith its unique, rich diversity and heritagebased attractions, St Helena is a joy to explore. This subtropical island offers a plethora of activities, from visiting its little Georgian town to exploring the rugged coastline, rolling hills and the stark yet striking geology of Sandy Bay. The island boasts a varied history, breathtaking views from its highest peak, called Diana’s Peak, plus inviting waters and plenty of charm. That’s what makes this destination so unique… there’s so much more to the island than you may think. St Helena is situated in the South Atlantic Ocean. The nearest land to it is Ascension Island, which is 1,125km to its north-west. The island is 1,950km from the south-west coast of Africa and 2,900km from the coast of South America. It is tiny – around 122 square kilometres in size, and one of the most remote islands in the world. St Helena’s climate is controlled by the South Atlantic high pressure system and the equatorial trough. In simple terms, it has a mild climate with changeable weather due to the south-east trade winds. You may wake up to a cloudy morning, but this will often lead to a bright, sunny afternoon. As there are no drastic weather patterns, the island doesn’t have four different seasons. The hottest months are between January and 56 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

March, and the coldest are between June and September, making the weather quite similar to South Africa. And because the weather is so mild, you can visit the island all year round. The island boasts a fascinating history. It was discovered in 1502 by the Portuguese. It later became a Dutch colony under the East India Company and then a British colony under the Crown. It was a strategically important port of call during British reign. St Helena’s remote location made it an ideal place of exile for key prisoners, including some 6,000 Boers and King Dinuzulu, king of the Zulu nation in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, until his death in 1913. In addition, Bahraini princes and Napoléon Bonaparte were imprisoned there. The French statesman actually died on St Helena in 1821. The island also played an important role during the abolition of slavery. Its heritage provides a significant legacy of fortifications, remains and historic buildings, many of which are found in the quintessential Atlantic port of Jamestown, the

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW Currency The currency is the St Helena pound (SHP), but Great British pounds (GBP) are also widely accepted. Most stores and restaurants accept cash payments only. There is no ATM on the island, so withdraw or exchange currency on arrival at the Bank of St Helena Currency Exchange Kiosk at the airport. It also cashes GBP traveller’s cheques. Anything to declare? • St Helena has very strict laws regarding what can be brought onto the island. Remember, if you’re in doubt, declare it.

HOW TO GET THERE The best way to get to St Helena is with direct flights on SA Airlink from Johannesburg on Saturdays. Over the festive season (December and January), Airlink is adding an additional flight midweek to the Joburg/St Helena route from 1 December 2018 to 30 April 2019. Ryan Potgieter, General Manager of Flight Centre Business Travel South Africa, has the inside track on New York City’s top attractions and how to enjoy them whilst on a business trip

F

orty-eight hours isn’t nearly enough time to see and experience New York City entirely, but, if your next business trip or short stopover is the only chance you’ll get, you can still squeeze the Big Apple of its juice. New York is a popular business destination but doubles as an ideal place to take a ‘bleisure’ break – combining business and leisure. If you are flying all that way, it is worth getting a bit more out of your trip by adding in a leisure element in-between meetings or even requesting some extended leave after your business meetings are finished. I advise chatting to a travel professional to help you manage your budget, advise on value-adds like travel insurance and offer activities to get the most of your time and money in the city. To be honest, 48 hours may only whet your appetite, but here is my advice on what to do in New York on or after your business trip.

JUST WALK

Even if it’s only in the area of your meeting or hotel, head out on foot to explore. From the oldest buildings near the Wall Street Financial District to Chinatown, Little Italy, Tribeca and the West Village – all are worth a short stroll and an exploration. Walk up Fifth Avenue, from the Washington Square Arch at the bottom to The Plaza Hotel at the top. Pop into the New York Public Library and witness Central Park along the way; it is especially beautiful in spring and autumn but you will enjoy being out in the fresh air and the respite from the big city bustle any time

NYC AFTER DARK

As the city that never sleeps, New York is the right place to sightsee after dark. Book a show on Broadway,

or sip a White Russian or Espresso Martini at Westlight, 22 floors up with a breathtaking view of the city lit up at night. This rooftop bar offers the best views of the Manhattan skyline from Brooklyn. It’s open Monday to Thursday from 4pm to midnight, Friday from 2pm to 2am, Saturday from 12 noon till 2am and Sunday from noon till midnight. Most museums offer extended late hours and free entry on the first Friday of every month, while admission to The Museum of Modern Art is free for all visitors every Friday evening, from 4 to 8pm.

‘BLEISURE’ TOOLS TO USE ON THE GO

BITE-SIZED CULTURE

Pizza is the quintessential New York meal – it’s fast and it’s cheap. In lower Manhattan, try a Black Seed bagel or a free tour of Williamsburg’s Brooklyn Brewery. These run every half hour from 1 to 6pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Old Town Bar near Union Square offers all the NYC foodie classics between 11.30am and 1am every day, while Free Tours by Foot offers pay-what-you-like daily foodie tours through Greenwich Village and the Lower East Side.

A QUICK OVERVIEW

If you don’t have time for a tour or museum visit, make your way across the Brooklyn Bridge. The structure itself is a stunning piece of architecture, while the views over the East River and Governors Island are breathtaking. Alternatively, head to the Top of the Rock Observation Deck (Rockefeller Center) for panoramic New York City views. It is normally not as crowded as the Empire State Building. Plan this in advance through your travel expert so that you can obtain skip-the-queue tickets from New York Pass. The best way to add a leisure element to your business trip is by asking a travel agent to create a mini leisure itinerary.

Keep your leisure schedule light so you’re not crunched for time, but be prepared with some go-to travel tools if you find yourself with some time to spare. The Guides by Lonely Planet app (free for iOS and Android) curates quality information on points of interest, as well as travel tips that you can save offline. Download the Visit a City app, which gives you the exact distance and time it takes in-between attractions. www.lonelyplanet.com/guides

EXPLORE | EUROPE’S CHRISTMAS MARKETS

CHRISTMAS SPIRIT WHETHER YOU’RE PLANNING TO SPEND THE ENTIRE FESTIVE SEASON IN EUROPE OR ARE VISITING FOR A SHORT TIME, TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE VARIOUS TRADITIONAL MARKETS THAT OFFER A MAGICAL TASTE OF A REAL WHITE CHRISTMAS, SANTA AND ALL

is show up and connect with a different kind of Christmas in the most popular markets of Germany, Austria and Switzerland.” Here’s a taste of some of the most popular Christmas markets to visit:

W

arming Glühwein and Yuletide cheer, brightly lit market squares packed with traditional stalls laden with wooden toys and an extravaganza of carols. That’s what you’ll find when you explore towns in Europe from mid-November until Christmas Eve, from Paris to Prague. A tradition carried on from medieval times, these magical markets offer the opportunity to purchase traditional Christmas decorations and festive fare. The most traditional of these markets are found in German-speaking European countries. It makes sense – these countries kindled the spirit of Christmas in medieval times to mark the beginning of Advent and allow locals to purchase their traditional Christmas decorations and festive fare. “There’s not a town or city in Europe that doesn’t make the most of the season to share a little festival cheer. From colourful szopki processions to prune men, each market showcases its own traditional food and customs,” says Trafalgar South Africa’s Managing Director, Teresa Richardson. “Our company runs special Christmas market departures that are incredibly popular among South African travellers of all ages. All the details of each trip have been taken care of, so all you need to do 62 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

NUREMBERG Arguably Germany’s most famous Christmas market, the Christkindlesmarkt in Nuremberg dates back to the early 17th century. Here you can wander past 180 traditional wooden stalls laden with locally produced wooden toys, buy one of its famous Zwetschgenmännle (prune men) and sample the local blueberry Glühwein. STRASBOURG Head to the ‘Capital of Christmas’ for an enchanting Christmas market experience that has been wowing festival goers for more than four centuries. You’ll find pretty wooden chalets, Bredele biscuits and magic in the chilly winter air as you stroll past hundreds of the Christkindelsmärik chalets around the city centre. VIENNA The City of Music puts on quite a show over the festive season, with a picture-perfect baroque backdrop for several Christmas markets held across the city. A favourite is the Old Viennese Christmas Market in the city centre, which dates back to 1772. Also popular is the Vienna Christmas World on Rathausplatz, with its ice rink and beautiful light installations. Schönbrunn Palace is not only the city’s most visited site year-round, it also hosts of the city’s finest Christmas markets. Here you’ll find handmade Christmas decorations and numerous exquisite nativity sets. SALZBURG The Salzburg Christmas market is among one of the

oldest in Europe – it dates back as far as the 15th century. The market is located at the foot of the Hohensalzburg Fortress and around the cathedral. Visitors can take part in numerous events such as choral singing or playing wind instruments. A highlight is the nativity exhibits in the Residenz courtyard. DRESDEN For almost six centuries, revellers have indulged in this market’s carols and characteristic Stollen or Striezel (fruitcake), from which Dresden’s Striezelmarkt derives its name. Today, the most famous feature of this market is the 14m-high Erzgebirge Christmas Pyramid and special events like the Dresdner Stollen festival. PRAGUE A veritable winter wonderland awaits in Prague at the Christmas markets in both the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square. Tuck into klobása sausages and Trdelnik pastries, paired with one of the famous Czech beers or a warming cup of svařené víno. bigambitions.co.za

FASCINATING FACTS In many European cities, the opening of the Christmas market is marked by welcoming the Christkind (Christ child). This is often portrayed by a young boy representing baby Jesus or a young girl dressed as an angel. Germany adds to its Christmas celebrations by staging a nativity trail around the streets.

HOW TO GET THERE Trafalgar Tours can organise a festive season tour to the Christmas markets for you. www.trafalgar.com/en-za

K

eyes Art Mile is a landmark already, with the ultramodern Trumpet Building at centre stage, home to iconic Marble restaurant, where David Higgs reigns supreme, and some of the best art galleries in the country and a smidgeon of places to shop. But there’s another whole block full of art, fabulous food and a little bit of retail that sometimes get overlooked. I’m talking about Jan Smuts Avenue between Bolton Road and Wells Avenue, where the little Parks Centre stands. Yes, we know the Goodman Gallery is on the corner opposite Bolton Road Collection. But there’s plenty more if you take the time to look. Skip over the uneven stones along the pavement, don’t mind the traffic, just put your best foot forward and stroll along the road, and you’ll find a whole lot of little adventures just waiting to be experienced. This is another stretch of Rosebank’s Art Mile, and there’s exciting stuff happening…

DINING

Marble Restaurant on Keyes Avenue remains iconic, offering an unbeatable culinary experience – even in fickle Joburg where places to go, people to look up to and fashionable trends change at the blink of an eye. David Higgs has managed to maintain the restaurant’s reputation not only for fine fire-grilled fare, but for innovative dining that is ahead of the pack. If you’re looking for something a little bit different and a lot more casual, head for Saigon Suzy on Jan Smuts. It calls itself an Asian BBQ and Rock ‘n’ Roll Bar and serves street food from all over Southeast Asia washed down with Asian-inspired cocktails. After a few of those, you’ll find yourself singing your heart out in the Karaoke Bar. Right next door on the corner is Bolton Road Collection, a great meeting place for coffee, breakfast, lunch or dinner, offering contemporary bistro-style food in a relaxed atmosphere. Next on Bolton Road is a hidden gem called Coalition Pizza, where you’ll find pizzas that will transport you to Florence in Italy. A chef stretches the dough while exercising his arms

in myriad directions, then it’s covered with flour, pounded into a thin base with melt-in-the-mouth crispy crust and topped with a choice of only eight ingredients to create an incomparable delight. If you enjoy savouring pastry and Urban Grind’s finest coffee against a backdrop of trendy artworks, stop off at Priest Espresso Bar. It’s a treat. For more casual fare, you’ll find two delightful places below Marble in the Trumpet Building. BGR offers quintessential burgers and fries with your choice of toppings, all free, so you can build your burger to your liking. You can also have a low-carb version, the lettuce bun. The custard ice cream is legendary – take some home or savour one of the delicious milkshakes. Milk Bar is a popular haunt for coffee, breakfast, a little lunch or a choice of drinks when the sun goes down. It’s a tiny slice of African cool, with a whole lot of atmosphere. Let’s not forget Parks Café in the Parks Centre, a laidback coffee spot with scrumptious breakfasts, light meals for lunch and Wi-Fi so you can catch up on emails or do a little work.

PANTRY MARKET AT KEYES Launched in March, this fabulous food market is well worth a visit. It takes place on the last Saturday morning of each month, offering small batch, artisanal foods to take home and enjoy. Right until the end of August, the market will offer winter season specials and thereafter warm weather dishes will be featured.

Enjoy freshly baked breads and pastries, cheeses, coffee, crêpes and other delicious fare, as well as a fascinating food-related talk by an industry expert. Producers include Bakgat Naartjies, which also farms ‘Eureka’ lemons in the North West, Chocoloza Belgian Chocolates, Craft Coffee, Isabella’s Gelateria, Kula Organics, Lorian’s Cheeses, The Grainery, raw small batch honey from Urban Apiary and much more. The Pantry Market takes place from 9am to 2pm in the Atrium of the Trumpet on Keyes. See you there! www.keyesartmile.co.za

contemporary art exhibitions as well as human technology and scientific installations. Sculptures by leading contemporary artists spread out over both sides of the pavement, creating an eye-catching adventure. Everard Read Gallery is the oldest commercial art gallery on the continent and synonymous with the finest South African art. It boasts four exhibition areas and various courtyards and indigenous gardens. Also in the building is TMRW, an exploration space that blends augmented, virtual and mixed reality to create artistic real world experiences. Iconic and historic, the Goodman Gallery stands proudly on Jan Smuts Avenue. One of Joburg’s most distinguished and long-standing contemporary art galleries, it was established in 1966 during the apartheid era. Now headed by Liza Esserts, it showcases influential artists who strive to shift perspectives and engender social transformation. At the very top of the Jan Smuts Art Strip, on the same side of the road as the Goodman Gallery, the Kim Sacks Gallery is a treasure trove full of art, craft and design from all over Africa. Then, across the road you’ll find Priest, part edit suite, part coffee shop and part pop-up gallery space. It hosts regular indie art exhibitions featuring emerging artists. On the same strip is Lizamore & Associates, a gallery showcasing excellent contemporary art from emerging and established local artists. Also here is fine art gallery Gallery 2, which promotes contemporary up-and-coming artists across all disciplines. David Krut Projects is also along Jan Smuts, a stunning exhibition space with a bookstore next to it.

SHOP NIGHTLIFE

Marble Bar remains one of the city’s most popular sundowner spots with breathtaking views from the veranda over Joburg’s jacarandas, even when they’re not in bloom. There’s also the exclusive MESH Club on the same floor, which boasts a cocktail bar called the Mix Bar, serving curated cocktails, a restaurant offering Jamaican/African-style cuisine and a members’ lounge. They also boast an outdoor area for an al fresco experience. Coalition Pizza has a back door that leads to a hidden gem, Sin & Taxes, an extraordinary little gin bar open Tuesdays to Sundays from 5pm till 1am. Enjoy artisanal cocktails at this stunning speakeasy – the menu changes with the season and current mixology trends. At number 144 Jan Smuts Avenue around the corner, you’ll find a brand new spot, A Streetcar Named Desire, offering great drinks and a trendy atmosphere.

Hidden amongst the art and hype are numerous shops worth exploring. In Keyes Avenue’s Trumpet building, you’ll find Anatomy Design, the showroom of powerhouse HK Studio, which features timeless

GALLERIES

Next to Trumpet Building is the legendary CIRCA Gallery, developed alongside the Everard Read Gallery. CIRCA features magnificent

handcrafted décor pieces that are a feast for the senses. There’s also Kartell, offering unique décor products from all over the world. Cassina, under the same True Design umbrella, showcases quality furniture and design. The building is also home to The Butchery by Marble, where you can take home delectable slices of the special cuts of meat served in the restaurant upstairs. Rubbing shoulders with BGR and the Milk Bar are a selection of retail stores, including Okapi, offering exquisite artisanal handbags 68 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

and accessories sourced from local materials. The famous sneaker store Shelflife is next door – a popular haunt for sneakerheads, it stocks limited editions and rare styles. And let’s not forget Park Centre itself, home to Woolworths, Exotic Kashmir and the ever-popular Polish Nail Spa, where you can enjoy a 30-minute mani if you’re in a hurry or something longer and more luxurious for both hands and feet. If you’re in a hurry and can’t stop for a bite to eat, don’t forget Casalotti’s Pizza Rapido on the corner for a takeout. Across the road from Park Centre is Hadeda, a haven of colour and Mexican magic, with fabric, iconic tiles, crockery and all sorts of décor items that will add a Mexican fiesta to your home. Then along Jan Smuts en route to Bolton, you’ll find La Familia Street Culture, the coolest apparel and sneaker store in the neighbourhood. Round the corner on Bolton itself, there’s Bar Ber Black Sheep where you can not only have a haircut or a shave, but you can enjoy one of the coolest bar menus in town, that includes draught beer, cocktails, beer and whisky.

9 TO 10.15AM Vinyasa at the Silo is my idea of heaven. Moving here, I was determined to take up one of the city’s healthiest habits – yoga. There’s no better way to start the weekend than with a sweat-inducing Vinyasa session at the Virgin Active Classic in the Silo District. When you’re overlooking Table Mountain, it really makes a back bend that much easier!

Day 1

11AM TO 1PM Next stop is to go organic at the Oranjezicht City Farm Market in Granger Bay. Whether you go to shop for organic fruit and veggies for the week or just to grab a bite to eat and catch up with friends, it’s a relaxed atmosphere with live music and plenty of delicious treats. I find it hard to resist a Kleinsky’s bagel and am totally guilty of ordering the same one every single time. 2 TO 4PM Another Capetonian habit I’m determined to pick 70 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

up is wine! Best of all, the Constantia Wine Route is one of the few appellations in the world just minutes outside of a city! The route has grown from five farms and now boasts a healthy eight. Just a 20-minute Uber trip from home, it’s a great outing, so round up a few friends to get tasting. Beau Constantia offers a gorgeous view of the rolling vineyards below from a modern setting. Hint: Upload a picture to Instagram while you’re here and score a complimentary glass of bubbly. 6PM All that wine tasting can be hungry work, so head back to the city bowl to one of my favourite Italian restaurants, Il

Leone Mastrantonio, for dinner. This Greenpoint gem undoubtedly serves up the best pasta in town. Local patrons recommend the Tagliatelle Pescatore – a seafood mix with line fish, mussels, calamari and baby prawns in a tomato and white wine sauce. Unfortunately, I’m allergic to seafood, so I opt for a penne chicken dish instead. Booking is recommended here, but the staff will do their best to accommodate walk-ins.

8AM After a full day of eating (and drinking) yesterday, it’s time for an early morning session on the Sea Point promenade. There’s nothing quite like a quick jog or cycle here to get the day started. I love the mix of serious runners, young families and plenty of cute puppies all enjoying the prom together. There are plenty of cafés to grab your morning cuppa, too.

Day 2

11AM Instead of the usual cooler weather, we’ve been blessed with a scorcher today. Temperatures are set to reach 25°C, which means a cheeky visit to the beach for me. Clifton Third is my beach of choice. I grab my new Marian Keyes novel and head down to soak up some rays. Whoever said sea salt is good for the soul knew exactly what they were talking about. 2PM Feeling inspired by nature, I venture to my favourite

Green Point deli to treat myself to a bunch of blooms to brighten my apartment. Giovanni’s is a Cape Town institution, known for its delicious, ready-cooked food section, cheese and meat counter, and pantry shelves packed with tempting imported specialty goods. Today I’m interested in the flower market. I choose some beautiful roses in unusual pink shades. 4PM No Sunday blues here… One thing I love the most about living in this city is the fact that there are so many ways to kill the Sunday blues. This weekend, I’ve decided to meet a few friends at the Radisson Blu Hotel Waterfront in Granger Bay for some cocktails. As we sip and watch the sun go down, it feels like the perfect way to end off yet another glorious weekend in the Mother City. We were even treated to a dolphin sighting!

EXPLORE | DURBAN

48 hours IN THE 031 IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHERE DIEHARD DURBANITES HANG OUT, ASK GARTH JOHNSTONE, AN EDITOR AND ADVENTURER WITH A PENCHANT FOR FUN. HERE IS HIS IDEA OF 48 HOURS OF BLISS

10.30/11AM If you’re driving down from Joburg, why not make a stop at Nottingham Road for a late breakfast or pub lunch? We recommend Café Bloom, opposite The Junction, for the freshest scones and tea, or Nottingham Road Hotel for fish and chips and a pint. The Bierfassl, just down the road, is always popular with weekenders and road trippers, and is famous for its festive atmosphere and Austrianinspired fare. It also serves the local Rawdons craft beers.

Day 1

12 TO 1PM On your first day in Durban you must get down to the beachfront and take a stroll along the promenade (or surf, if you’re that way inclined). This is what the city is all about, after all, and Durban has some of the best ‘winter’ weather anywhere in the world. The promenade is popular with cyclists, skateboarders, walkers and joggers, and the sea is just waiting for the army of surfers, stand-up paddling (SUP) riders,

swimmers and paddle boarders. There are a number of coffee shops and eateries to choose from here, including Circus Circus, Surf Riders Café and Afro’s Chicken Shop. 2PM If you’re looking for something different, try the Bangladesh Market in Chatsworth for some authentic Durban vibes and a bargain or two. This is where many people come to score good deals on fruit and veg, chicken and fish, as well as a colourful array of spices, toiletries, plants, kitchenware and clothing. A sweet assault on the senses, the market harks back to the traditional markets of yesteryear. You may need a Garmin or Google maps for this one. 5PM In the late afternoon or early evening, I’d consider a sundowner

at the Sky Bar at the Roma Revolving Restaurant or Moyo uShaka. Both offer great opportunities to enjoy the last rays of the day in a uniquely Durban setting – Sky Bar with its views of the city and marina, and Moyo with the smell of the ocean and sounds of families enjoying the end of a day out at the seaside. 10PM After supper, plan a night out at one of Durban’s hottest spots, The Chairman on Mahatma Gandhi (Point) Road. Renowned for its live jazz and sophisticated party atmosphere, this is your chance to rub shoulders with the who’s who of Durban and the KZN province. The music gets going at about 10.30pm, with DJs kicking into action later to keep the party going and the cocktails flowing.

GARTH JOHNSTONE

9AM Get day two started with breakfast at parc. in Glenwood. Popular with young families who populate this hip neighbourhood, it’s a sociable way to kick off the day with your favourite caffeine fix and a hearty breakfast.

Day 2

10.30AM If you’re feeling the urge to explore the great outdoors, head for Kenneth Stainbank Nature Reserve in Yellowwood Park or drive 20 minutes inland for a walk in the Kloof Gorge. Both offer a green-lung escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, and are popular with locals and visitors. Suitable for gentle strolls or a real workout, they are also the preserve of small game and abundant birdlife. 1PM For lunch, why not pop in to the Britannia Hotel in Umgeni Road, famous for its bunny chows and curries? Sit in the ‘Brit’s’ pub and let your eyes water as you savour one of the iconic tastes of

“Pop in to Britannia Hotel, famous for its bunny chows and curries” Durban. The mutton bunnies and chutney chops are some of the city’s favourite dishes. 5PM to whenever Finish off the day with a visit to Max’s Lifestyle in Umlazi, a hugely popular shisa nyama venue at 328 Mbe Road, or head for Havana Grill at the Suncoast Casino overlooking Suncoast Beach, with 180° views from the Bluff all the way to Umhlanga. It’s all about steaks, wine, cigars and the vibe.

PASS THE SALT SHOT OR NOT, THAT’S YOUR CALL. BUT DID YOU KNOW THAT THE MAGICAL NECTAR IN YOUR GLASS TOOK A MINIMUM OF EIGHT YEARS TO CREATE? LET’S TALK ABOUT TEQUILA…

I

Agave harvester for tequila, circa 1880s Mexico

t’s only produced in Mexico and primarily in the city of – you guessed it – Tequila, just 65km from Guadalajara. It’s also made in the Highlands (Los Altos) of Jalisco, a western state of Mexico. Tequila is made from a succulent called blue agave that resembles a lily and looks like a spiky character from a Dr Seuss novel. The heart of the plant, called the ‘pina’, is cut out and used to create the spirit, a process that can take up to eight years in all and includes steam cooking, crushing, fermentation and distillation. Like vodka and gin, tequila is a clear spirit that’s pot-distilled at least twice before being bottled or aged for a period of time in either a cask or a wooden barrel. When it’s made of 100 percent blue agave, it’s called ‘puro’, and when its mixed

“75 percent of all tequila is consumed in the US and Mexico. The other 25 percent is exported to the rest of the world” with other sugars before fermentation, it’s called ‘mixto’. The spirit has a 38 percent alcohol content and it varies in colour – either clear, light gold or rich amber. The signature flavour is fruit, pepper and spice. When the tequila is young, it has a green, earthy taste. The longer you age it, the mellower, richer and more complex it becomes. The most popular way to drink it in Mexico is neat, though the rest of the world enjoys it as a shot with salt and lime. Interestingly enough, around 75 percent of all tequila is consumed in the US and Mexico. The other 25 percent is exported to the rest of the world.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF TEQUILA 1. Silver (also called Blanco or Joven) is unaged, or very briefly aged, tequila. The colour is usually white. 2. Gold tequila is a type of hybrid that’s usually mixed with added colouring to make it look aged. 3. Reposado means ‘rested’. This type of tequila is amber in colour and has been aged in wooden

barrels for anything between two 5. Extra Añejo is tequila that has been aged for at least three months to a year. years. 4. Añejo is a tequila that has been 6. Crystalline tequila has a citrus, aged for at least 14 months. This fresh taste like a white tequila is the most widely available and is white in colour, but it’s complex tequila. It’s also the actually an aged tequila that has smoothest tequila, with very been filtered through carbon to little alcohol taste. Its flavour is recover some of the agave flavour mainly smoked oak, caramel, that was lost during aging. vanilla and spices.

HOW TO DRINK IT Different glasses are required to drink different types of tequila:

1. Shot glass: Best for certain white tequilas, which tend to be a little stronger. 2. Champagne flute: This will concentrate the aroma towards your nose and mouth. Best for more aromatic tequilas. 3. Old-fashioned glass: Use this if you’re drinking tequila with ice. 4. Snifter: Ideal for special or extra-aged tequilas.

BEFORE YOU DRINK IT 1. Smell the inside of the glass and get used to the aromas. This assists with identifying different flavour notes. 2. Try swirling the tequila in a glass to see how the aromas change as the spirit oxygenates. 3. Don’t drink it too fast. Rather gently sip it so that the flavours dissolve in your mouth. 4. Chilling the tequila will mask its flavours. If you want to, you can add an ice cube – the water will bring out the agave’s aromas and flavours.

86 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

PAIRING TEQUILA WITH FOOD 1. White tequila goes well with fish and seafood. 2. Reposado tequila is excellent with robust dishes, including meats and sauces.

3. Añejo tequila goes best with desserts and spicy dishes. It highlights the flavours of sweet foods and cuts the heat in spicy dishes.

HOW TO CHOOSE A TEQUILA

WHAT TO DRINK IT WITH

D

arker tequilas aren’t better than the lighter iterations; they’re just different. Before committing to one type, try them all and figure out which you like best. Also remember – price isn’t necessarily a sign of quality. Generally, manufacturers charge more for the design, brand or origin. Branding aside, it’s best to choose 100 percent agave tequila in a plain bottle rather than blended tequila with a high price tag in a decorated bottle. 10 HEALTH BENEFITS OF DRINKING TEQUILA Seriously, tequila is good for you. Read on… • It was a great cold and flu remedy used extensively

• • • • • • • • •

in the 1930s (they mixed tequila Blanco with agave nectar and lime juice). Apparently, it kills bacteria. Relieves sore throats. The agave in tequila lowers cholesterol. More effective when used before it’s been distilled! Stimulates appetite and aids digestion. Lowers blood sugar levels. Treats colitis, IBS, Crohn’s disease and even cancer. Rich in probiotics. It’s a prebiotic (promotes growth of good bacteria in the intestines). Elevates mood. Helps with insomnia.

Lime and salt is the way to go. The acidity in the lime acts as a palate cleanser, while salt enhances the spirit of the flavour. Alternatively, if you’d like to taste the agave, drink your tequila straight with no chasers or additives.

CASA MARANI ITALIAN DELI 010 900 4717

This is an Italian family-run Parkhurst deli that is the go-to spot for pasta, antipasta platters, dolci and everything in-between. But there’s also an Israeli in the family, and his shakshuka, salmon scrambled eggs, cream cheese on a New York bagel, hummus and other Mediterranean delights are amazing breakfast dishes. Our favourite is the melawach, a delicious Yemenite Jewish fried flatbread traditionally served with hard-boiled eggs, chopped or crushed flavoured tomatoes and a spicy condiment called ‘z’hug’. Yum.

Offering every type of kosher Jewish food you can think of, Feigels is a household name if you’re Jewish, and even if you’re not. The quality is always good, and the food authentic and flavoursome.

RTG, which means Ready to Go, offers deli meats and dishes including scrumptious hot dogs, burgers, steaks, schwarmas, you name it. Next Door is where you’ll find fish dishes, vegetable options, stunning desserts, bagels, tramezzinis, fish, pasta and more.

The restaurant features an extensive wine cellar, superbly aged whiskey and fine quality beef, which has built its reputation as one of Joburg’s best. Its on-site butchery adds another element to the experience.

Rainold Peterson moved his famous Joburg steak restaurant from Melville to Hurlingham in 1980. Signature dishes include cuts of prime beef with sauces, chateaubriand, steak Diane, trinchado, slow-cooked oxtail, venison and pork ribs.

We recommend the meze platter, pork belly roll, gorgonzola burger and the scrumptious eggs Benedict or eggs Florentine. And its cakes are renowned.

FLAMES

The phrase ‘al fresco’ is borrowed from old Italian, meaning ‘in the cool (air)’. This doesn’t refer to dining outside in Italian anymore. The expression ‘al fresco’ is now used to refer to spending time in jail!

www.fourseasons.com The terrace offers the best views in Joburg, right over our urban forest and the zoo. In jacaranda season, there’s nowhere better to sit, and whether you’re enjoying the sun or a sundowner whilst the chefs prepare something delectable, it’s a treat. The restaurant at the Westcliff Four Seasons Hotel is superb, and even a simple grilled burger is something special. Whether you’re celebrating an occasion or just the end of another day in paradise, this is where you should do it.

FULL STOP CAFÉ

MIKE’S KITCHEN

MEZEPOLI

fullstopcafe.co.za

www.mikeskitchenparktown.co.za

www.mezepoli.co.za

You might be just off Seventh Avenue in Parktown North, but when you’re at the Full Stop Café, you’re in a different world. A favourite with the young crowd, this place is an institution, offering a choice of specials on chalkboards, as well as old favourites, including potato skins, fries topped with Prego sauce, platters of finger-licking foods, plenty of light meals and more substantial offerings. The drinks and cocktails are another drawcard.

Set in an historic building in Parktown, a relic of times gone by and one of the original steakhouses in Joburg, Mike’s Kitchen is the ideal choice for a business lunch or family meal. The salad bar is still going and the steaks taste like they always did (yum). Watch out for the lunch specials, which are good value for money. Dine outside when the sun’s shining for a nostalgic al fresco experience.

The Melrose Arch piazza makes dining outside a foregone conclusion, and if you add Mezepoli to the mix, you are in heaven. This delightful restaurant, with its meze, souvlaki and other Greek offerings, is an adventure each time you visit. There’s so much on the menu, you can choose a different selection every time you come. Or stick to your favourites. Whatever you eat here will be a veritable feast.

PIZA E VINO 010 591 2199

This Italian restaurant in Sunninghill offers the opportunity to sit outside on the open deck area and dine on traditional Italian dishes. The menu features an extensive choice of pizzas, plenty of pastas – and vino of course. Opened in January this year, its consistently good food and friendly service make it the perfect choice for a relaxed al fresco dining experience.

MOYO

www.moyo.co.za Offering modern pan-African dishes under the sun at Zoo Lake, Moyo is an adventure. Get your face painted, enjoy the tranquility and some seriously good food – we’re talking potjies, kraal mixed grill, tagines, even Mozambican prawns. Dine under the trees in a setting that’s ideal for families and friends – there’s even a kids’ menu to keep the little ones happy.

DOPPIO ZERO www.doppio.co.za

Café-style dishes and tasty baked goods are the reasons customers keep coming back to Doppio Zero in Greenside. It is also a great place to relax on the verandah or under an umbrella with friends or family on the weekend. Lunch and dinner dishes are varied and interesting, including small meals, tapas, pizzas, burgers and everything in-between.

PATA PATA 073 036 9031

Maboneng has numerous offerings with indoor and outdoor dining options. Our choice is Pata Pata, a vibrant eatery offering typically African cuisine (pap, wors and tripe, if you’re up for it, or burgers and salads if you prefer). Located in what was once Sophiatown, home to the likes of Miriam Makeba, the energy at night here is electric, the food and the ambience a treat.

www.codfather.co.za This Sandton restaurant has a special cachet as well as a stunning setting where you can dine al fresco, in the private wine cellar area or in a superb communal restaurant with tables that are far apart. The Codfather has been on the scene for over two decades and has maintained its reputation for fine fish and seafood. Choose what you want from the fish counter then have it prepared your way – you won’t be disappointed. There’s also a selection of steaks, chicken dishes, sushi… and the sunset and whiskey bars are another great attraction.

VASCO’S SEAFOOD & GRILL www.vascosseafoodandgrill.co.za

This Bedfordview restaurant offers stunning Mediterranean-style seafood and dishes redolent with Portuguese flavour. Irresistible offerings include queen prawns and Norwegian salmon, and traditional dishes such as trinchado, caldo verde and chouriço. The fish is fresh, the menu small and well-thought out. We recommend the moreish seafood platters.

Catch of the day

Always packed to the rafters, this popular Illovo eatery is the place to go to see and be seen whilst savouring some of Joburg’s finest fruits of the sea. Whether you’re there for the seafood bisque or enjoy sampling a fine selection of the freshest line fish and seafood available away from the coast, you’re in for a great meal with all the trimmings. Portions are huge and the food is always delicious.

Japan consumes the most seafood in the world, with Spain coming in at number two

FAHRENHEIT SEAFOOD & GRILL fahrenheitrestaurant.co.za

Located in Edenvale, this relaxed, informal family restaurant offers a wide range of fish, shellfish and grilled meats. Kids are catered for with their own menu. Whether you’re in the mood for seafood or steak, or prefer something vegetarian, you won’t be disappointed. Prawns are a speciality, especially the very, very hot flamed prawns.

CATCH FISH GRILL catchrestaurant.co.za

Located in Bedford Square, this restaurant offers an Asian-inspired menu that focuses on seafood. There’s sushi, sashimi and other favourites from the sea, as well as dim sum, udon noodles, sizzling beef and many other sensational Asian offerings. Ideal for an intimate dinner á deux or a casual gathering with friends and family.

FISH HOOK 011 888 8249

You can’t beat this Darrenwood establishment’s fish and chips – they’re the best in town. This is not a sit-down spot; you go here to take away a delicious, melt-inthe-mouth meal that will have you queueing again next weekend. Of course there’s more, in the form of traditional ‘slap’ chips, fish cakes, chip rolls and calamari with chips.

WILLOUGHBY & CO www.willoughbyjoburg.com

An institution in Hyde Park, this popular seafood restaurant has never lost its charm. The sushi has always been of the highest standard and the menu offerings are extensive. The fish is fresh, seasonal, served in copper pans and always delicious. Moules marinière and English fish and chips are both popular choices, and the seasonal specials keep customers coming back. If you have space, try one of the desserts – Willoughby’s is known for its sweet dishes, too.

BIG MOUTH

www.thebigmouth.co.za A sushi and grill restaurant with a reputation for great food, The Big Mouth in Nelson Mandela Square is a popular choice for a special occasion. Seafood is just one of the specialities – the meat is also renowned here – and the charcoal oven gives every dish a robust, authentically South African braaied flavour. Whether you’re a fan of seafood or red meat, you’re in for a treat, with numerous offerings including pots of goodness (we love the mussel pot) and pans full of pasta or other delights. Our favourites? The lobster roll, seared tuna and miso salmon. And don’t leave without sampling the deep-fried Oreos.

THE FISHERMAN’S KITCHEN 011 706 2763

Bryanston’s answer to great fish and chicken, this eat-in and takeaway establishment offers superb seafood – hake, Cape whiting, sole and other fresh fish served with chips. There are also prawns, a reasonably priced seafood platter and various types of chicken (burgers, fillets, kebabs or just chicken). Well worth sampling for lunch or dinner.

KOI, ROSEBANK koirest.co.za

A blend of stunning seafood and Asian fare, Koi offers an occasion, not just a dining experience. The dim sum and steamed buns are worth writing home about, whilst there’s miso or seafood tom yum for soup, and mains include exotic dishes such as wagyu beef, soft shell crab, Thai curries and, of course, that memorable seafood. And did we mention there’s an entire sushi menu to drool over? There are three Koi restaurants in Gauteng – the Rosebank iteration gets our vote.

HASHI FUSION SUSHI & SEAFOOD 011 888 0114

This relatively new Linden restaurant is quite unique; it focuses on ancient Japanese cooking techniques whilst using exotic ingredients and flavours characteristic of South American dishes. This heady combination creates an interesting, extraordinary culinary experience. The menu includes sushi fusion tempura dishes, udon noodle fare and delicious main courses featuring plenty of seafood and steak. The prawn curry in a special yellow curry sauce is a standout dish.

LOVE FISH 011 326 8212

For a seafood experience you won’t find anywhere else, this charming eatery in Morningside Centre is our choice. It offers sushi and seafood with an innovative twist and specialises in line fish in various cuisines, including Asian, Mediterranean and African. For starters, try the smoked snoek samosas or the salt and pepper squid served with banana curry mayo and tomato atchar. Mains include Cajun dusted kingklip with carrot hummus and blackened seabass with harissa risotto. End the meal with home-made ice cream or a pistachio baklava.

SANLAM CENTENNIAL EXHIBITION SANLAM ART LOUNGE www.sanlam.co.za

Centennial: A Century of South African Art From the Sanlam Art Collection 1918-2018 features everything from Botha’s devastating Butterfly Box and Kentridge’s eerily abandoned Stadium to the perpetually discharging pistol of van der Merwe’s Gaste and the #RhodesMustFall reference behind Mudariki’s The Model. This body of work begs the question, is art the most truthful documentation of a nation’s history? And if so, what does Sanlam’s Centennial exhibition say about the transformation of South Africa? The exhibition commemorates Sanlam’s centenary and is one-of-a-kind in its objective to showcase South African history. Curator Stefan Hundt takes visitors on a journey through the last 100 years, with guided tours available by appointment on set dates. A journey that brings one face-toface with chapters of colonial hegemony, political repression, a triumphant democracy and the economically unbalanced society that followed.

It explores objects and iconographies of material culture central to the shaping of Adams’ identity and upbringing in the Cape Coloured community.
