From the editor So many adventures, so little time… that’s what we’ve filled this issue with, all sorts of discoveries for you, tiny hidden gems all over Joburg, just waiting to be explored. There are the lesser spotted (!) haunts along Jan Smuts that offer an exciting taste of what’s on in the art world – as good as those further along the road and around the corner in Keyes Avenue. This is the other part of Rosebank’s Art Mile, also home to fabulous décor and accessory stores, great places to eat or spend the evening. Whether you choose to let it all hang out at Saigon Suzy’s karaoke bar, or find the hidden door to Sin + Tax, live it up at MESH, or enjoy fine dining at Marble, it’s all there waiting for you in our Cool District on page 64. The iconic Goodman Gallery, which we featured as part of the Art Mile, also offered us a glimpse into the work of iconic South African photographer

David Goldblatt. The gallery shared a selection of the cameraman’s photographs with us, and we have put these memorable images together as a tribute to the man who documented South Africa without adding his personal commentary. By doing that, Goldblatt has given us a true, unbiased image of those times. Goldblatt passed away in June this year, and we have dedicated our Photo Essay to his memory. Take a look on page 36. Even when the story is a serious one, like our Big Read on plastic waste on page 26, there are positive discoveries that make us ever hopeful. International star Pharrell Williams has partnered with Bionic Yarn, which produces yarn made out of – you guessed it – plastic waste, transforming what is a threat to the oceans into fashionable jeans with G-Star RAW. Legendary photographer A legend, not only because of his magical photographs, but also for his humility, David Goldblatt showcased one of the most abhorrent times in South African history without ever taking a side. His images became indelible memories in the minds of the world and those who suffered through apartheid. We mourn his passing.

While water restrictions are still a reality for Cape Town, the good news is that the city has seen enough rainfall over winter to ensure residents don’t have to worry about Day Zero in 2018 or 2019. Businesses are also hoping to see a spike in tourism this coming summer. In case you’re headed that way, we caught up with ex-Joburg resident, multimedia content producer Malibongwe Tyilo and asked him to share his guide to ‘summering’ in Cape Town. He lived in Joburg before moving to the Mother City, as a writer (and more recently a videographer) focused on fashion, art, design and culture, so Malibongwe has had ample opportunity to sample all that Joburg has to offer as well as that ‘quality of life’ the Mother City is known for.

Che Argentine Grill in the Maboneng Precinct has been around for a while, and the reason I love it is entirely carnivorous. Meat lovers won’t be disappointed with the quality or quantity of meat on offer. And while Maboneng might not be a big deal for Joburg residents, for a Capetonian, a day in Maboneng is always a treat. 11PM

Time to party, so I’d head for The Tennis Club. It’s off the beaten track at what was once The Ellis Park Tennis Club, now reimagined into a unique social club that hosts underground-style parties featuring edgy experimental artists. Follow its social media pages to find out what’s next.

If there was some kind of competition between all the cities in South Africa to judge the best when it comes to the culture scene, it would be a tough competition between Jozi and the Mother City, and I doubt there would be a clear winner. Even though I’ve long chosen the latter as home, there’s still an incredible energy that I love plugging into every time I visit ‘die stad van goud’. 10AM

A perfect morning would entail visiting one of two newish additions to Joburg’s culture scene, both of which demonstrate embracing technology in the creation of art. TMRW Digital Gallery in Keyes Art Mile blends augmented, virtual and mixed reality technology to create immersive art experiences that live in the three-dimensional environment as well as the digital space. Definitely worth checking out for a glimpse into the future of art.

Lunch would be at The Royale in Craighall Park. I can’t decide what I love most about this space – the food, the cordial staff, the décor or just the overall vibe. It’s got a little bit of Cape Town and a bit of the Joburg I remember from my student days packed into a trendy package that’s as delightful as its deep fried cauliflower wings. I highly recommend visiting this spot for a chilled Sunday lunch session when they have a DJ and cocktail happy hour. 18 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

Opened in April 2018, the Norval Foundation is the second major museum to open in Cape Town within the space of a year. One of the things that sets it apart from the Zeitz is that, in addition to contemporary African art, it also has one of the leading collections of South African art from the 20th century. The ‘schweet life’ is my description of The Creamery, which has branches all over the city. It’s Cape Town’s go-to for natural made-fromscratch ice cream using locally sourced ingredients. I also suggest My Sugar, a shop I have a love-hate relationship with. Perhaps the most delicious and dangerous offering on their menu, inbetween all the artisanal chocolate, is a selection of stuffed doughnuts. 8PM

Mulberry & Prince is a kitchen and bar set-up with a seasonal menu that focuses on a wide range of foodie options based on edgy modern American-style cuisine. Whilst it’s very stylish, the minimalist interior is relaxed and welcoming.

Mornings I’ll do my admin, populate my diary with engagements, have my morning conference call with my team (all of two people). Then lunchtime will usually be my first meeting of the day, and the rest of the afternoon will be packed with meetings ranging from my creative and lifestyle consulting

efore you read on, grab your phone and head straight to Seth’s personal Instagram account, @seth_shezi. Look at the carefully curated images of his sun-kissed lifestyle at some of the most beautiful spots that Cape Town has to offer. And if that doesn’t make you envious, carry on to his other Instagram account, a blogazine as he calls it, @ capetownbest. It has nearly 2,000 posts of exquisite meals from

work under Shezi.Ink, as well as signing collabs and campaign deals for my influencer work. Evenings vary. On days when I have no events, I drag myself to gym for a boxing class with my trainer. Dinners I try to keep as private time for myself and my partner, friends or family. After dinner is when I do my writing work for the various magazines I contribute to. I also review what my team did during the day while I was out. All through the day, if I’m not posting some of my Instagram work, I post to keep myself entertained while I juggle all these balls.” Originally from Durban, Seth has been living in Cape Town for 15 years, since he studied at UCT: “Studying literally right below Table Mountain and Devil’s Peak and having to walk up towards it every day for lectures was an oddly spiritual and metaphoric experience. A reminder of how small we are in the greater scheme of things, but also how climbing to

various restaurants around the city. Then there’s the travel. When he is not busy on some getaway, be it local, Mexico City or Italy, he always seems to be feasting on gloriously plated dishes, all while dressed sharply, seemingly with enough time to take and edit the perfect snap. Exhausted by my envy, I had to ask: “How Mr Shezi. How? What does an average day look like in your life? What do you actually do?” To which he laughs, then sighs, before responding: “There are no

the summit was a complete possibility if you were cut out for it,” Seth explains. And climb he has. These days, through his content agency, Seth works as a writer and an art director. Outside of that, he also sits on a few judging and advisory panels within hospitality and performs trend research by way of travelling the world. Oh, and he designs travel itineraries for “high profile individuals who want private escapes”. Naturally, I want to compare notes. So I ask him, if I had to recommend five things that a friend from say, Joburg, absolutely had to do while in Cape Town, what would they be? Says Seth: “I’d say a hike up Lion’s Head will never get tired. It’s the best view of the city and you get to see Table Mountain almost at eye level. And the locals love to do this, so it’s not a tourist trap at

all. Dinners at The Shortmarket Club or La Tête are a must.” I see we’re on the same page here. “Do visit Gallery MOMO and WHATIFTHEWORLD,” he continues. “If time permits, visit the newly opened Norval Foundation with restaurant and gardens. Lunch must be in the Winelands – Chefs Warehouse and Canteen at Maison Estate and La Petite Colombe are my current favourites. While in Franschhoek, stop over at a few farms for wine tasting; it always tastes better at the source. I recommend Le Lude and Haut Espoir. Most Joburg folks have been told about Asoka for drinks, but add to that list SOUK, Yours Truly and The Gin Bar.” Well, there you go. I can’t promise that your pictures will have the same ‘like-magnet’ quality that Seth’s images have, but one can hope. No?

The plastic is recycled into what’s known as Parley Ocean Plastic, and is used in the manufacturing of adidas products like the Ultraboost X Parley footwear. Parley ocean plastic “allows us to turn trash into gold, to give purpose to waste and create a climate of change,” explains Cyrill Gutsch, founder of Parley. The plastic is recycled and used to create shoes rather than lie as waste in our oceans. To create one pair of adidas Ultraboost X Parley shoes, an average of 11 plastic bottles is used. That’s 11 less plastic bottles heading out to sea per every pair of shoes manufactured. It may sound quite small, but when you consider that by the end of 2017, adidas had produced over one million pairs of footwear that contained Parley Ocean Plastic, you can see that it is having an impact. For 2018, the brand has set itself a goal of five million pairs of shoes, which will see up to ensure quality control in each step of the process. In South Africa, three out of 10 girls miss an entire week of school every month (that’s 150 weeks of their total school career) due to not being able to afford menstruation management products like sanitary pads. This results in young girls dropping out of school altogether, as they simply cannot catch up on their schoolwork. This situation is prevalent across the whole of Africa. UNICEF estimates that over 100 million schoolgirls miss school for this very reason, every month. ‘Kgoshigadi’, which means ‘Queen’ in the South African language sePedi, is a social enterprise that seeks to positively impact the lives of women and girls throughout Africa. The project sees mini-factories set up where local unemployed women are hired to manufacture and sell Nandi Pads. These are biodegradable, disposable and affordable sanitary pads. The initiative first launched in 2012 to address the issue of menstruationrelated absenteeism in girls from low-income families in the Soshanguve township of South Africa. At first, sanitary pad donations were collected, but this project has since evolved to create a more sustainable solution. In her lifetime, the average woman creates between 125kg to 150kg of feminine product waste. Normal pads are not biodegradable and this causes serious environmental degradation. Nandi pads, however, are made using an innovative combination of natural fibres and agricultural waste. This combination is converted into hygienic raw material that guarantees the production of safe and affordable feminine hygiene products. Finally, it seems that the world is asking the question, “If plastic was made to last a lifetime, why do we only use it once?” 30 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

Which is why we have chosen to put South African-born actress Charlize Theron on our cover for the September issue of Joburg Style. We are extending the celebration of women for as long as it takes for their voices to be

This Oscar-winning super star is extremely outspoken when it comes to her views on rape, gender equality and female empowerment. Our South African princess is certainly not shy to air her views on everything from equal pay to AIDS, and everything in-between. Many of the roles she has played and the movies she has directed include powerful feminine archetypes, roles in which she transforms herself from the sweet blonde beauty we all know into a nasty, sometimes sinister woman. Her first depiction of something other than a glamorous star was in Monster, which she produced in 2003. She played serial killer Aileen Wuornos, a role that won her an Oscar for Best Actress. Facial prosthetics certainly assisted in transforming her into the monster she portrayed, but it was her undeniable acting skills that really did the trick. Other equally diverse female roles include everything from the selfish Mavis in Young Adult in 2011, the traumatised Libby in Dark Places in 2015 and the deadly

Who would have expected this pretty meisie from Benoni to be such a strong voice for women and women’s rights? For standing up for women and literally baring her soul on screen? She’s one of a new breed of celebrities, a collection of women who take no nonsense, who aren’t

ashamed to be seen pared down and unglamorous, make-up free and victimised by society. She’s one of those stars who is celebrated for their strong opinions and modern take on the world. Like Madonna before her and, more recently, Kristen Stewart, she epitomises the modern woman. Something we should celebrate all year round, not just one month a year.

orn in Randfontein in 1930, David Goldblatt was the son of Lithuanian immigrants. From the age of 18 he started taking photographs of everything that surrounded him – people, structures and landscapes – focusing his camera on aspects of apartheid over the decades. He documented South African blacks working in the mines or travelling under racist laws that restricted their movements. He also photographed whites in their privileged capacity, and interactions between black and white people that depicted how South Africa was distinctly “abnormal and abhorrent”. “I was very interested in the events that were taking place in the country as a citizen but, as a photographer, I’m not particularly interested, and I wasn’t then, in photographing the moment that something happens. I’m interested in the conditions that give rise to events,” he once explained. Described by Liza Essers, the Director of the Goodman Gallery, as “a legend, a teacher, a national icon, and a man of absolute integrity”, Goldblatt was renowned as a documenter of the world he lived in. Throughout his career, his photographs were exhibited all

over the world in museums as well as in newspapers. Earlier this year, in honour of his work, the Pompidou Centre in Paris held a critically acclaimed retrospective entitled Goldblatt. Another exhibition will be held posthumously in Australia in October, at the MCA Sydney. In 1988 Goldblatt was the first South African to be given a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Then, in 2001, a retrospective of his work over the past half century entitled David Goldblatt: 51 Years toured various museums and galleries worldwide. A year later he was one of the very few South African artists to exhibit at Documenta II in Kassel in Germany. This was followed by another exhibition at Documenta 12 in 2007 in the same location. During his career, Goldblatt held solo exhibitions in New York at both the Jewish Museum and the New Museum. His work was included in an exhibition entitled ILLUMInations at the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011 and has also been featured in shows at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Barbican Centre in London. Most major international museums have included Goldblattâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s images in collections, including the South African National Gallery; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; the Victoria and Albert Museum in London; the Pompidou, Paris; Tate, London; Inhotim in Brazil; the Art Institute of Chicago; and the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. 40 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

Goldblatt has received numerous awards over the years. In 2006, he received the Hasselblad award and in 2009 he was the recipient of the Henri Cartier-Bresson Award. He won the 2013 ICP Infinity Award and, in 2016, he was awarded the Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres by the Ministry of Culture in France. An agreement was signed recently with the Yale University Art Gallery, transferring Goldblatt’s entire archive of negatives to the university. In addition, a digital archive of this esteemed photograher’s work will be created in South Africa and made available to the public for free through an initiative named the Photographic Legacy Project. On hearing of Goldblatt’s death, President Cyril Ramaphosa released a statement expressing his heartfelt condolences. It included the following words: “Our country remains proud of his contribution to the portrayal of its life through the medium of photography and for leaving an indelible mark in our inclusive literary culture.” Rest in peace, David Goldblatt. ngels on Bikes is a collective of all-women riders formed to build a sisterhood of female bikers. Most of the women belong to regional motorcycle clubs such as Soweto’s Hoodratz MCC. These strong women grace Joburg’s streets on their superbikes and cruisers, offering a refreshing reflection of the growing economic independence of urban African women and the diversity of experience available to women in the city. Motorcycles are exhilarating, and bikers are a striking mixture of courage and composure. While the impetus for biking varies among the ladies, the freedom of the open air and road drives them all. “I am a biker for life, it’s my therapy,” says Star Lady, aka Nelisiwe. The Hoodratz MCC secretary fell in love with bikes after she spent a weekend riding Harleys with her best friend on a trip to Bloemfontein in 2010. “Biking is where I experienced true sisterhood. I remember a trip to Nelspruit I thought I might miss because I was a bit cash-strapped and the ladies came together and sorted me out,” she says, reflecting on camaraderie in the female biking community. Riding with the ladies is awe-inspiring; they obliterate expectation and misconceptions, their power captures the attention of gobsmacked pedestrians who immediately begin to clap or blow kisses. “My own prejudices about motorcycles disappeared the moment I mounted one and felt the speed, the adrenaline and the crisp wind – such sweet, scintillating liberation. Terror gripped me for a moment as I stepped up, but excitement and pure thrill followed. The open air and speed are totally addictive. It’s the most refreshing experience, and the leather pants and boots make it all the more potent.” The public perception around biking is shifting. While traditionally

it was the stronghold of aged, bearded masculinity, it has become a part of modern celebrations and an inspiration to Joburgers, who respond with curiosity and excitement at the sight and sounds of the bikers. The positive response to the women on bikes from other women is heartwarming. Twin B, aka Busisiwe Sithole, recalls a moment she had with an older lady who told her how she wished she had been a biker when she was younger, but time and circumstance did not allow. Twin B is a member of Soweto’s Hoodratz MCC; she lost her husband, Barry, in a motorcycle accident in 2015, yet she continues to ride because it reconnects her with him. It may seem counter-intuitive that she would get back on the bike after such tragedy, but she met Barry at Hoodratz and the love of superbikes and speed is something they shared. “I was scared to ride after Barry passed, but I had to. I feel him with me when I ride,” she explains. Entering Busi and Nelisiwe’s homes offers a warmer perspective of each of the women. Both are mothers, and their biking is integrated into their social and community lives. “I’ve met so many different people through my riding and have gained a community and better riding skills as well,” says Busi. “My neighbours hate the

noise, though,” she admits. Nelisiwe threw her son a biker-themed first birthday. Many members of her club attended, just as support, she says. “Bikers take care of each other; we don’t drive past someone who is stuck; we’ll stop and help. And, if you’re hurt, the community will circulate a message to your family and do their best to ensure you get immediate medical attention,” she says. Women riding motorcycles in a society pervaded by inequality is a result of the political and economic agency gained by African women in Joburg. These women fuel the aspirations of other young women to establish their own independence. And the sisterhood is growing and debunking myths of feminine fragility with every rally and ride. The skill and self-possession required to manage a motorcycle are handled with grace and elegance by these ladies, and they’re representing confidence and empowerment to all who are lucky enough to witness them.

It’s all about the craziness, the passion,” says 33-year-old Christos Adonis Droganis, aka BBoy Christos, from the crew Demolition Squad. Christos started b-boying in 1998 when he was 15. “Back then there was no b-boy scene in Joburg.” Christos’s cousin had heard about a club in Hillbrow, Reality, where they ‘did’ b-boying on a Monday and Wednesday. “I used to love doing handstands and flips, so I went through one night. I was taught by the now legendary graffiti artist Gogga, and in 2000, I formed my own crew, Demolition Squad.” Quaid Jones, aka JS 1, is a 23-year-old b-boy from the crew Artistic Intelligence. “My dad was a b-boy. In 1983 and ’84, he was probably part of the best crew in Zimbabwe. He tried to teach me when I was in Grade 3 and 4, and I learnt a few moves, but I wasn’t really that interested. It wasn’t until high school when I wanted to be the cool kid that I asked my dad to teach me again. I started a crew in Zimbabwe called Swisher House and, when I moved to South Africa, I met with the founders of Artistic Intelligence, who asked me to join them.” B-boying is all about the camaraderie. “As a b-boy, no matter what country you visit, you’re guaranteed to find another b-boy,” says Christos. “You’ll find them and they’ll find you, and when you link up, it’s as if you’ve been friends forever.” “You don’t need money to b-boy,” he adds. “I guess that’s why a lot of b-boys don’t come from much.” When b-boys travel, they have host families who take them in. “The moms will take in seven guys they don’t know. They don’t have much, but they’ll treat us better than people who have a lot. Christos adds, “It takes me back to when I started as a youngster in town. This is where the young kids start, they practise around you and it spreads that love of the movement. These are the kids of the b-boying future.” Christos reflects, “When I was a young kid, I was shy. I couldn’t speak to people and I had a huge complex about myself. B-boying was my only outlet, my way of talking.” Has b-boying hit a plateau? Where to from here? “B-boying is definitely not dying out, it’s growing for sure,” says Quaid. “But it’s up to

the individual,” Christos adds. “I see a lot of kids get into it and once they go to university they stop. It happens to everyone – the harder you get hit, you’ve got to get up. You come up with a gig that people can’t say no to, and you sell yourself. The young guys are the ones who need to take over now, like Quaid.” The b-boys know how to give back, too. In 2010, Artistic Intelligence started a CSI project called Project Smile. “We’ve visited underprivileged schools all over the place. It’s so good to give back to the community. You’re not just teaching, you’re changing lives, and it’s one of the best feelings ever,” says Quaid. How about the b-boy style? “The street style fashion you see today is derived from b-boys – tracksuit pants, joggers. B-boys were wearing these 15 years ago because they’re so comfortable to break in. We all have our own individual style, but come together to do one thing, one goal,” Christos says. If you have to put a trademark on a b-boy, it would be sneakers. “All b-boys go crazy for awesome shoes. That’s just how we roll. We’re all sneaker heads,” Quaid explains. “B-boying is a lifestyle. It’s the best thing that could have happened to me,” says Quaid with a grin. “So,” Christos turns to Quaid, “Are we sessioning after this?”

ith its unique, rich diversity and heritagebased attractions, St Helena is a joy to explore. This subtropical island offers a plethora of activities, from visiting its little Georgian town to exploring the rugged coastline, rolling hills and the stark yet striking geology of Sandy Bay. The nearest land to it is Ascension Island, which is 1,125km to its north-west. The island is 1,950km from the south-west coast of Africa and 2,900km from the coast of South America. It is tiny – around 122 square kilometres in size, and one of the most remote islands in the world. St Helena’s climate is controlled by the South Atlantic high pressure system and the equatorial trough. In simple terms, it has a mild climate with changeable weather due to the south-east trade winds. You may wake up to a cloudy morning, but this will often lead to a bright, sunny afternoon. March, and the coldest are between June and September, making the weather quite similar to South Africa. And because the weather is so mild, you can visit the island all year round. The island boasts a fascinating history. It was discovered in 1502 by the Portuguese. It later became a Dutch colony under the East India Company and then a British colony under the Crown. It was a strategically important port of call during British reign. St Helena’s remote location made it an ideal place of exile for key prisoners, including some 6,000 Boers and King Dinuzulu, king of the Zulu nation in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, until his death in 1913. In addition, Bahraini princes and Napoléon Bonaparte were imprisoned there. The French statesman actually died on St Helena in 1821. The island also played an important role during the abolition of slavery. Its heritage provides a significant legacy of fortifications, remains and historic buildings, many of which are found in the quintessential Atlantic port of Jamestown, the

Walk up Fifth Avenue, from the Washington Square Arch at the bottom to The Plaza Hotel at the top. eyes Art Mile is a landmark already, with the ultramodern Trumpet Building at centre stage, home to iconic Marble restaurant, where David Higgs reigns supreme, and some of the best art galleries in the country and a smidgeon of places to shop. But there’s another whole block full of art, fabulous food and a little bit of retail that sometimes get overlooked. I’m talking about Jan Smuts Avenue between Bolton Road and Wells Avenue, where the little Parks Centre stands. Yes, we know the Goodman Gallery is on the corner opposite Bolton Road Collection. But there’s plenty more if you take the time to look. Skip over the uneven stones along the pavement, don’t mind the traffic, just put your best foot forward and stroll along the road, and you’ll find a whole lot of little adventures just waiting to be experienced. This is another stretch of Rosebank’s Art Mile, and there’s exciting stuff happening…

Marble Restaurant on Keyes Avenue remains iconic, offering an unbeatable culinary experience – even in fickle Joburg where places to go, people to look up to and fashionable trends change at the blink of an eye. David Higgs has managed to maintain the restaurant’s reputation not only for fine fire-grilled fare, but for innovative dining that is ahead of the pack. If you’re looking for something a little bit different and a lot more casual, head for Saigon Suzy on Jan Smuts. It calls itself an Asian BBQ and Rock ‘n’ Roll Bar and serves street food from all over Southeast Asia washed down with Asian-inspired cocktails. Sculptures by leading contemporary artists spread out over both sides of the pavement, creating an eye-catching adventure. Everard Read Gallery is the oldest commercial art gallery on the continent and synonymous with the finest South African art. It boasts four exhibition areas and various courtyards and indigenous gardens. Also in the building is TMRW, an exploration space that blends augmented, virtual and mixed reality to create artistic real world experiences. Iconic and historic, the Goodman Gallery stands proudly on Jan Smuts Avenue. One of Joburg’s most distinguished and long-standing contemporary art galleries, it was established in 1966 during the apartheid era. Now headed by Liza Esserts, it showcases influential artists who strive to shift perspectives and engender social transformation. At the very top of the Jan Smuts Art Strip, on the same side of the road as the Goodman Gallery, the Kim Sacks Gallery is a treasure trove full of art, craft and design from all over Africa. Then, across the road you’ll find Priest, part edit suite, part coffee shop and part pop-up gallery space. It hosts regular indie art exhibitions featuring emerging artists. On the same strip is Lizamore & Associates, a gallery showcasing excellent contemporary art from emerging and established local artists. Also here is fine art gallery Gallery 2, which promotes contemporary up-and-coming artists across all disciplines. David Krut Projects is also along Jan Smuts, a stunning exhibition space with a bookstore next to it.

Marble Bar remains one of the city’s most popular sundowner spots with breathtaking views from the veranda over Joburg’s jacarandas, even when they’re not in bloom. 9 TO 10.15AM Vinyasa at the Silo is my idea of heaven. Moving here, I was determined to take up one of the city’s healthiest habits – yoga. There’s no better way to start the weekend than with a sweat-inducing Vinyasa session at the Virgin Active Classic in the Silo District. When you’re overlooking Table Mountain, it really makes a back bend that much easier!

Day 1

11AM TO 1PM Next stop is to go organic at the Oranjezicht City Farm Market in Granger Bay. Whether you go to shop for organic fruit and veggies for the week or just to grab a bite to eat and catch up with friends, it’s a relaxed atmosphere with live music and plenty of delicious treats. I find it hard to resist a Kleinsky’s bagel and am totally guilty of ordering the same one every single time. 2 TO 4PM Another Capetonian habit I’m determined to pick 70 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

up is wine! Best of all, the Constantia Wine Route is one of the few appellations in the world just minutes outside of a city! The route has grown from five farms and now boasts a healthy eight. Just a 20-minute Uber trip from home, it’s a great outing, so round up a few friends to get tasting. Beau Constantia offers a gorgeous view of the rolling vineyards below from a modern setting. Hint: Upload a picture to Instagram while you’re here and score a complimentary glass of bubbly. 6PM All that wine tasting can be hungry work, so head back to the city bowl to one of my favourite Italian restaurants, Il

Leone Mastrantonio, for dinner. This Greenpoint gem undoubtedly serves up the best pasta in town. Local patrons recommend the Tagliatelle Pescatore – a seafood mix with line fish, mussels, calamari and baby prawns in a tomato and white wine sauce. Unfortunately, I’m allergic to seafood, so I opt for a penne chicken dish instead. Booking is recommended here, but the staff will do their best to accommodate walk-ins.

8AM After a full day of eating (and drinking) yesterday, it’s time for an early morning session on the Sea Point promenade. There’s nothing quite like a quick jog or cycle here to get the day started. I love the mix of serious runners, young families and plenty of cute puppies all enjoying the prom together. There are plenty of cafés to grab your morning cuppa, too.

11AM Instead of the usual cooler weather, we’ve been blessed with a scorcher today. Temperatures are set to reach 25°C, which means a cheeky visit to the beach for me. Clifton Third is my beach of choice. I grab my new Marian Keyes novel and head down to soak up some rays. Whoever said sea salt is good for the soul knew exactly what they were talking about. 2PM Feeling inspired by nature, I venture to my favourite

Green Point deli to treat myself to a bunch of blooms to brighten my apartment. Giovanni’s is a Cape Town institution, known for its delicious, ready-cooked food section, cheese and meat counter, and pantry shelves packed with tempting imported specialty goods. Today I’m interested in the flower market. I choose some beautiful roses in unusual pink shades. 4PM No Sunday blues here… One thing I love the most about living in this city is the fact that there are so many ways to kill the Sunday blues. This weekend, I’ve decided to meet a few friends at the Radisson Blu Hotel Waterfront in Granger Bay for some cocktails. As we sip and watch the sun go down, it feels like the perfect way to end off yet another glorious weekend in the Mother City. We were even treated to a dolphin sighting!

We recommend Café Bloom, opposite The Junction, for the freshest scones and tea, or Nottingham Road Hotel for fish and chips and a pint. The Bierfassl, just down the road, is always popular with weekenders and road trippers, and is famous for its festive atmosphere and Austrianinspired fare. It also serves the local Rawdons craft beers.

Day 1

12 TO 1PM On your first day in Durban you must get down to the beachfront and take a stroll along the promenade (or surf, if you’re that way inclined). This is what the city is all about, after all, and Durban has some of the best ‘winter’ weather anywhere in the world. The promenade is popular with cyclists, skateboarders, walkers and joggers, and the sea is just waiting for the army of surfers, stand-up paddling (SUP) riders,

swimmers and paddle boarders. There are a number of coffee shops and eateries to choose from here, including Circus Circus, Surf Riders Café and Afro’s Chicken Shop. 2PM If you’re looking for something different, try the Bangladesh Market in Chatsworth for some authentic Durban vibes and a bargain or two. This is where many people come to score good deals on fruit and veg, chicken and fish, as well as a colourful array of spices, toiletries, plants, kitchenware and clothing. A sweet assault on the senses, the market harks back to the traditional markets of yesteryear. You may need a Garmin or Google maps for this one. 5PM In the late afternoon or early evening, I’d consider a sundowner

at the Sky Bar at the Roma Revolving Restaurant or Moyo uShaka. Both offer great opportunities to enjoy the last rays of the day in a uniquely Durban setting – Sky Bar with its views of the city and marina, and Moyo with the smell of the ocean and sounds of families enjoying the end of a day out at the seaside. 10PM After supper, plan a night out at one of Durban’s hottest spots, The Chairman on Mahatma Gandhi (Point) Road. Renowned for its live jazz and sophisticated party atmosphere, this is your chance to rub shoulders with the who’s who of Durban and the KZN province. The music gets going at about 10.30pm, with DJs kicking into action later to keep the party going and the cocktails flowing.

Suitable for gentle strolls or a real workout, they are also the preserve of small game and abundant birdlife. 1PM For lunch, why not pop in to the Britannia Hotel in Umgeni Road, famous for its bunny chows and curries? Sit in the ‘Brit’s’ pub and let your eyes water as you savour one of the iconic tastes of

The mutton bunnies and chutney chops are some of the city’s favourite dishes. 5PM to whenever Finish off the day with a visit to Max’s Lifestyle in Umlazi, a hugely popular shisa nyama venue at 328 Mbe Road, or head for Havana Grill at the Suncoast Casino overlooking Suncoast Beach, with 180° views from the Bluff all the way to Umhlanga. It’s all about steaks, wine, cigars and the vibe.

In a small bowl, combine the Peppadew® chutney, olive oil, dried chilli flakes, honey, fresh oregano, salt and black pepper in a bowl. Mix well and set aside. 2. Pour the marinade over the Karoo riblets, coating well. Cover and refrigerate for one hour. 3. Cook the ribs on the braai to your liking or until the marinade is sticky and slightly charred. 4. BEEF, BILTONG & AVOCADO SLIDERS WITH CHEESY PAP CHIPS Ingredients For the cheesy pap chips 2½ cups (625ml) water 1 cup (250ml) mieliepap flour Pinch of salt 1 cup (250ml) grated cheddar cheese 1 tbsp (15ml) olive oil Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper For the beef, biltong and avocado sliders 500g lean beef mince 3 spring onions, sliced 150g biltong powder 4 tbsp (60ml) chopped, fresh flat leaf Italian parsley 3 tbsp (45ml) grated Parmesan Pinch of salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 tbsp (15ml) olive oil To serve Mini burger buns Sliced avocado Creamy chakalaka dip Peppadew® chutney Micro herbs How to do it For the cheesy pap chips 1. In a medium saucepan, bring the water to a boil and add the salt. 2. Start whisking in the mieliepap flour until smooth, lower the heat, cover with a lid and cook for 2-3 minutes. Give the pap a stir and remove from the heat. 3. Add the cheese, olive oil and season well with salt and black pepper. 4. Pour the pap into a greased baking dish and create a thin, even layer. Put aside to cool and set. For the sliders 1. In a large bowl, combine the mince, spring onions, biltong powder, parsley, Parmesan and season well. 2. Divide the mixture into 8 small patties, brush with olive oil and set aside. Cooking 1. Heat the oven to 200°C and line a baking tray with baking paper. Cut the pap into ‘chips’, place them on the tray and drizzle with olive oil. 2. Bake for 14-20 minutes or until golden and crisp. 3. Grill the sliders in a hot griddle pan and cook to your liking. 4. Place the patties onto the buns, add avo, chakalaka dip, Peppadew® chutney and herbs. Serve with cheesy pap chips.

CHARGRILLED LEMON CHICKEN SOUVLAKI SKEWERS Ingredients For the souvlaki 4 large chicken breasts, cubed 3 tbsp (45ml) olive oil Juice of 1 large lemon 1 large garlic clove, grated Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper For the tzatziki 1 cup (250ml) thick Greek yoghurt 1 small garlic clove, grated Â˝ cucumber grated and squeezed Toasted pita bread, to serve Chopped tomatoes, to serve How to do it 1. Place the chicken, olive oil, lemon juice and garlic in a bowl. Season well with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. Cover and marinate for 20 minutes. 2. Skewer the chicken onto bamboo skewers and grill over a hot griddle pan or braai for 10 minutes (turning regularly) or until the chicken is cooked through. 3. For the tzatziki, combine the Greek yoghurt, garlic and cucumber in a bowl and season. Mix well. 4. Serve the chicken souvlaki with toasted pita, a dollop of tzatziki and chopped tomatoes.

For the herb mayo, combine the mayonnaise, herbs, olive oil, lemon juice and salt and pepper in a bowl. Using a hand blender, blitz to form a smooth, even consistency. Set it aside. 2. To assemble, place a steamed Bockwurst sausage into each hot dog bun, followed by sliced pickles and drizzle with the herb mayo. 3. Scatter with sliced spring onions before serving.

Agave harvester for tequila, circa 1880s Mexico

t’s only produced in Mexico and primarily in the city of – you guessed it – Tequila, just 65km from Guadalajara. It’s also made in the Highlands (Los Altos) of Jalisco, a western state of Mexico. Tequila is made from a succulent called blue agave that resembles a lily and looks like a spiky character from a Dr Seuss novel. The heart of the plant, called the ‘pina’, is cut out and used to create the spirit, a process that can take up to eight years in all and includes steam cooking, crushing, fermentation and distillation. Like vodka and gin, tequila is a clear spirit that’s pot-distilled at least twice before being bottled or aged for a period of time in either a cask or a wooden barrel. When it’s made of 100 percent blue agave, it’s called ‘puro’, and when its mixed

The spirit has a 38 percent alcohol content and it varies in colour – either clear, light gold or rich amber. The signature flavour is fruit, pepper and spice. When the tequila is young, it has a green, earthy taste. The longer you age it, the mellower, richer and more complex it becomes. The most popular way to drink it in Mexico is neat, though the rest of the world enjoys it as a shot with salt and lime. Interestingly enough, around 75 percent of all tequila is consumed in the US and Mexico. The other 25 percent is exported to the rest of the world.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF TEQUILA 1. Silver (also called Blanco or Joven) is unaged, or very briefly aged, tequila. The colour is usually white. 2. HOW TO DRINK IT Different glasses are required to drink different types of tequila:

BEFORE YOU DRINK IT 1. Smell the inside of the glass and get used to the aromas. This assists with identifying different flavour notes. 2. Try swirling the tequila in a glass to see how the aromas change as the spirit oxygenates. 3. Don’t drink it too fast. Rather gently sip it so that the flavours dissolve in your mouth. 4. Throughout 2018 during the school holidays, high school kids can participate in a fourday course at Pretoria Zoo that will introduce them to the field of nature conservation. Called Junior Nature Conservators, the course is filled with activities that enable participants to explore and research the adaptations, behaviour and conservation issues of animals in the zoo as well as in the reptile park and aquarium. They interact with the zoo’s conservation and veterinary staff and assist with caring for selected animals. Participants receive a certificate and T-shirt on completion of the course. The Montecasino Bird Gardens are a joy to explore. The only sanctuary of its kind in Africa, it offers an outdoor adventure with plenty of birdlife. Kids get to feed some of the tame rainbow lorikeets and watch macaws and cockatoos as they fly free in the Parrot Gallery. The Bird Gardens offer bird shows that are both entertaining and educational – these are held at 11am and 3pm on weekdays and at 11am, 1pm and 3pm on weekends and public holidays. The gardens are also quite spectacular.

When Dust Settles is a solo exhibition by Igshaan Adams, the 2018 Standard Bank Young Artist for Visual Art. It explores objects and iconographies of material culture central to the shaping of Adams’ identity and upbringing in the Cape Coloured community. It expands on his earlier work and charts a new course for his practice as a artist. Adams has used Islamic prayer mats, selfportraiture, woven ropes, wire and cotton threads before. This exhibition boldly re-evaluates this material and cotton threads into abstract sculptural forms. He also presented pieces of vinyl flooring. The current exhibition re-evaluates this material with a bolder creative resolve.

Located in Emmarentia, the dam is actually part of the Johannesburg Botanical Garden, but it has its own distinctive personality. The area spans 7.5 hectares in all, and water sports such as canoeing and sailing small boats are very popular. The dam also features canoeing and rowing club facilities. Birdwatchers and nature lovers flock here, and the grounds around the dam are filled with trees and grass – ideal for family picnics. There’s also a small café for refreshments.

One minute you’re on the highway and the next you’re in Birdhaven’s park close to Melrose Arch, a little slice of paradise in the northern suburbs. Originally a bird sanctuary, the 36-hectare area has been upgraded at a cost of R5 billion, but is still home to an assortment of birds and plenty of open spaces to enjoy nature at its best. A picnic here is a dream, with the Sandspruit River flowing through the park, which is completely fenced off.

Located in Bedfordview, the 44-hectare Gillooly’s Farm is a popular spot to visit. With Linksfield Ridge as its backdrop, it’s a great place to get away from it all, a scenic retreat from city living. There’s no real border between Emmarentia Dam and the Botanical Gardens, and the combined 81-hectares are a joy to explore. A huge oasis in the middle of the city, it’s just 6km from the city centre and yet a world apart. The entire area is lush and green, with plenty of sloped grass embankments and more than 20,000 indigenous trees, offering a choice of picnic spots.

I must mention that no exhibit on sea animals will be complete without the wandering albatross. We have a piece with a 3m wingspan that is simply magnificent.
