The Girl After his success with ‘Psycho’ in 1960, ‘The Master of Suspense’, Alfred Hitchcock, is determined to outdo himself with a new horror movie, about a flock of birds which inexplicably start to attack the citizens of a small Californian coastal town. Unfortunately, Hitchcock’s favorite leading lady, Grace Kelly, is now permanently off the scene, so, Hitchcock decides to create a new leading lady, which he can mould into his own idea of a movie star. He chooses the inexperienced former fashion model Tippi Hedren to be his latest blonde screen goddess. This terrific HBO movie delves into the professional and private relationships between Alfred Hitchcock and Tippi Hedren, and, it is a taut sexual and psychological melodrama, which is by far more interesting than anything Hitchcock ever made himself. The movie is brilliantly acted by Toby Jones and Sienna Miller, while director Julian Jarrold reveals the Dirt behind the Glamour and the Truth behind the Myth. Ruby Sparks A young and successful author has no-one special in his life. One night he has a dream about a woman, and, when he wakes up, he decides to make her the heroine of his next novel. However, after he has written a few pages, strange things start to happen around his house, then, as he continues to write, his fictional woman suddenly materializes in real life. This is a very charming comedy, directed by Jonathan Dayton, and starring Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan, along with Antonio Banderas and Annette Bening. Still, as the movie progresses, a dark subtext emerges that explores the need for men to control and manipulate women for their own emotional and sexual desires. Chernobyl Diaries Some young tourists are backpacking their way through Europe, and, when they arrive in Russia, they meet an ‘Extreme Adventure’ tour guide, who offers to take them to the abandoned city of Chernobyl, to see first hand the results of the nuclear disaster. Their quick little trip to Chernobyl turns out to be much more than they anticipated. This horror movie, directed by Brad Parker, is actually very good, as everything which happens to the tourists is quite feasible and credible. This just goes to make the movie all the scarier. The Amazing Spider-Man Frankly, I don’t see the point in making this movie. The first ‘Spider-Man’ was released as recently as 2002. This re-make covers pretty much the same ground as the original. Once again we learn how Peter Parker became Spider-Man, and the rationale behind his crusade against crime. What is new in this movie is the Super Villain he has to confront. Anyway, that being said, this ‘Spider-Man’ is a terrific piece of film-making, which will attract a whole new younger generation. Andrew Garfield makes an appealing Super Hero, and his aerial acrobatics are amazing, but, it’s hard to tell how much is performed by the actor, a stunt double, or, is computer-animation. To Rome With Love Woody Allen continues his European Sojourn. This time he pays homage to the Eternal City with a quartet of Fellini-like short stories. Woody can often be a bit hit or miss, and, so it is with these stories, however, on the whole, they are all kind of amusing. The problem with the movie is that Woody intercuts his stories, and, as they all take place in different time frames, this becomes confusing. The movie could have been more successful if Woody had of presented his stories in the traditional Italian style, that is, one after the other, instead of mixing them up. As we all know, Woody pays his cast next to nothing. It’s a privilege to appear in one of his movies. This time we get to see Alec Baldwin, Roberto Benigni, Penelope Cruz, Judy Davis, Ellen Page, Greta

Hindenburg This German movie is very old-fashioned in style, and, it features some aging International movie stars along with some not so fresh new German faces. All of the actors perform as a group of travelers, and flight crew, journeying on the Hindenburg Zeppelin, as it takes a fateful voyage from Germany to America. There are lots of Swastika flags fluttering in the breeze, to establish the period, and, all on board, are heaps of Gestapo officers, decadent socialites, and fleeing German Jews. Also, there could quite possibly be a bomb hidden somewhere on the airship. Okay, this all sounds hackneyed and corny, but, surprisingly enough, the movie does hold your attention during its extremely long running-time of just over 3 hours. Killer Joe William Friedkin is an eminent American director, best known for his sensationalism and depiction of violence in movies such as ‘The French Connection’ (1971) and ‘The Exorcist’ (1973). With ‘Killer Joe’, Friedkin adapts a stage play by Tracy Letts, but, he doesn’t do much to expand it out for the screen. Nearly all of the action takes place in a prefabricated house dumped in a dilapidated trailer park. ‘Killer Joe’ is an assassin for hire, and he gets a little bit upset when he is not paid for a job he undertook for a Texan white trash family. The movie is very violent, and its depiction of a perverted sex act is probably the most graphic to hit the screen in some time. That’s My Boy Adam Sandler just pulls faces and whines throughout another awful comedy.
