If once you have slept on an island YOU’LL NEVER BE QUITE THE SAME; YOU MAY LOOK AS YOU LOOKED THE DAY BEFORE AND GO BY THE SAME OLD NAME, YOU MAY BUSTLE ABOUT IN STREET AND SHOP YOU MAY SIT AT HOME AND SEW, BUT YOU’LL SEE BLUE WATER AND WHEELING GULLS WHEREVER YOUR FEET MAY GO. 10

12

YOU MAY CHAT WITH THE NEIGHBORS OF THIS AND THAT AND CLOSE TO YOUR FIRE KEEP, BUT YOU’LL HEAR SHIP WHISTLE AND LIGHTHOUSE BELL AND TIDES BEAT THROUGH YOUR SLEEP. OH! YOU WON’T KNOW WHY AND YOU CAN’T SAY HOW SUCH A CHANGE UPON YOU CAME, BUT ONCE YOU HAVE SLEPT ON AN ISLAND,

You'll never be quite the same. —RACHEL FIELD

Ground to Cover

From Harbour Village to the Point of Cape Fear, Bald Head Island offers countless options for exploring. Read how to get it together and get going!

Biking puts the island’s flora and fauna front and center.

Pirates, spirits and even the Yay-Hoe make an appearance during summer Ghost Walks.

NO BRIDGE, NO CARS, NO PROBLEM Without a bridge tethering it to the mainland, the island is left footloose and car-free. Here’s how to take to the open road. RIDE IT OUT The most popular modes of transportation on Bald Head Island are the electric golf cart and bicycle. Whenever possible, opt for two wheels or your own two feet to best soak up the surroundings. Both Coastal Urge and Riverside Adventure Co. rent bikes by the day and by the week. Be sure to share the road by riding single file on the right to allow carts and trams to pass.

LATER SKATER At Coastal Urge you’ll find longboard skateboards, arguably the hippest way to get around town. Add a land paddle and get in quite the workout as you “surf” the island’s wynds and ways.

undisturbed maritime forest. Just off Federal Road, the M. Kent Mitchell Nature Trail rewards hikers with spectacular views of the creek and close encounters with fiddler crabs and wading birds when the tide is low.

TAKE A HIKE Along Federal Road several trailheads enter the Bald Head Woods Preserve, a nearly 200-acre area of

Riverside Adventure Co.’s entertaining scalawags during summer evenings. If you’re lucky, you may get to meet the enchanting spirit of Theodosia Burr Alston, beautiful daughter of Aaron Burr, the third vice president of the United States. Theodosia’s ship mysteriously disappeared off the coast of Bald Head Island in 1812, and her body was never found. haven 25

IT’S ONLY NATURAL When you want to learn more about the island’s flora and fauna, look no further than the Bald Head Island Conservancy. BEACH PATROL Join the Bald Head Island Conservancy staff on their summer evening patrols with the Sea Turtle Ride Along, help watch for turtle tracks leading from the waves to the dunes, and call back to base with your findings. If you’re in the right place at the right time, you could see a loggerhead turtle lay her eggs or witness a nest hatch. WALK ON The Conservancy holds seasonal nightly Turtle Walks for members, which start at the Barrier Island Study Center and then move to the beach for a little lesson in ecology. If the timing is right, your group will head off to watch a turtle dig her nest and lay her eggs while Conservancy naturalists collect information. Later in the season, you may get to see a nest “boil” and hatch. NIGHT LIFE Another evening event, Bald Head After Dark, introduces the nocturnal creatures of the island, including frogs, bats, alligators and bioluminescent plankton. After a presentation, you’ll join a naturalist on a flashlight-led walk to see what critters you can spot. 26

FINE FEATHERS Every season of the year, Bald Head Island is home to an impressive array of birds—some 244 species in total—and the Conservancy staff members know them by sight and song. Join a Birding Expedition to see how many you can find. As a part of the tour, you’ll get a rare opportunity to visit the Ibis Pond on Middle Island, a private sanctuary where waterbirds congregate. CAST AWAY To truly live like a local, join the Conservancy for a quick primer on crabbing and cast netting. In just a couple hours’ time, you’ll be catching any number of baitfish and blue crabs in the water around the Village Creek Access. WILD CHILD The Bald Head Island Conservancy is also known for their experiential summer camps for kids 4-14. While preschoolers catch bugs and make crafts, elementary schoolers kayak, crab and collect shells. Middle schoolers become citizen scientists by collecting data, helping with research, planting dune grasses and more.

Bald Head Island has more than 30 public beach accesses.

JUST ADD WATER Uninterrupted shoreline wraps Bald Head Island on every side, allowing endless room to roam. A SHORE THING Splash, flip, frolic, dive and play in the waves to your heart’s content. Along with swimming, 14 miles of beach offer a backdrop for building sandcastles, collecting shells or just watching the clouds float by. South Beach’s long 28

stretch of sand is ideal for strolling and shelling. Along West Beach near Harbour Village, you’ll find kids wading in the shallow surf. Out on East Beach, the waves are typically bigger and the surfers and boogie boarders love the action.

MAKE SOME WAVES When you travel to the island, bring along your favorite longboard or shortboard for testing out the surf. Or, better yet, pack light and rent a board from the Sail Shop. If you’re new to surfing, the Sail Shop offers group and private

lessons. The locals tend to congregate around Access 42, located along East Beach, as soon as the sun comes up. WHAT SUP? Take a standup paddleboard (SUP) lesson or tour with Coastal Urge for a novel

along the inland waters of the Cape Fear River. If you’re interested, you can take sailing lessons on the J80, or kids from 8-13 can learn how to handle one of the Optimist Prams.

way to explore the island’s waters. Stop by the Board Room on Keelson Row in Harbour Village for rentals, excursions and instruction. For good exercise and guaranteed laughs, rent a Sasquatch SUP and paddle along with up to six of your closest friends. COME SAIL AWAY See another side of the island when you go sailing with the Sail Shop. Their 26’ J80 sailboats, Jive and Joyride, are perfect for a relaxing sail out on the Atlantic or

CREEK SPEAK Through the Bald Head Island Conservancy, you can take guided kayak or canoe tours with an expert naturalist. Expect to see egrets, ibises, herons, kingfishers, ospreys, bald eagles, and maybe even a dolphin or alligator on your

tour. At the Sail Shop, they offer guided trips along Bald Head Creek and Fishing Creek in single and double kayaks. These 90-minute tours are packed with history, stories and wildlife identification, but if you’d rather go out on your own, the Sail Shop can provide you with a kayak or canoe, life jacket and paddle, and send you on your way. THE LURE OF THE SEA From the surf you can catch flounder, red drum, bluefish, mullet, pompano and

Spanish mackerel. Speckled trout, grey trout, red drum, spots and flounder inhabit the creeks here, and whether you’re fishing from a dock, boat or kayak, you stand a chance of landing a beauty. If you decide to head offshore, your guide can pick you up in Harbour Village and put you on tuna, grouper, mackerel, mahi-mahi, tarpon and even marlin in the Gulf Stream. Most guides provide licenses and equipment, but if you’re fishing from shore, be sure to have a valid North Carolina fishing license on you.

4

-1-

Bring your board or rent one from Riverside Adventure Co.

-2-

Standup paddleboarding is not as hard as it first appears. Rent a SUP from Coastal Urge and you’ll be balancing like a pro in no time.

-3-

Set sail around sunset for a picture-perfect cruise.

-4-

Bald Head Creek is best explored by kayak. Rent one and go it alone, or take a guided tour from the Sail Shop or Conservancy for a more in-depth experience.

BE A GOOD SPORT If you’re renting, request a temporary membership in both the Bald Head Island Club and the Shoals Club so you don’t miss a thing. TEE TIME Don’t leave the island without playing a round or two on the Bald Head Island Club’s stunning golf course. The 18-hole beauty winds its way along the Atlantic Ocean and through the maritime forest, providing scenic views at every turn. If your game’s a little rusty, head to the range where you can warm up, take a lesson from a PGA pro, or join a clinic and perfect your swing. SERVE IT UP If golf’s not your thing, you can enjoy a tennis match on one of the Club’s four courts. Clinics, socials and private lessons for kids and adults are available with one of the U.S. Professional Tennis Association staff members during the summer. Nearby, take note of the immaculate croquet greenswards where the Bald Head Island Croquet Club plays, practices and holds international tournaments. From June to September they host Family Croquet, relaxed gatherings where you can learn firsthand how the game is played. WATER WORKS When you’re ready to cool off, the BHI Club’s 25-meter pool 30

is open for lap swimming early in the morning, then open to all the remainder of the day. There’s also a giggle-inducing Splash Pad for kids 12 and under. Keep in mind, the Club’s pool area is undergoing a major renovation, so access may be limited during part of 2018. CHILD’S PLAY Kids don’t take a back seat to grownups at the Bald Head Island Club or the Shoals Club. The BHI Club offers a robust summer camp program, including golf, tennis and swimming instruction; arts and crafts; games; and plenty of aquatic activities. The Shoals Club has a full calendar of activities for kids, too, headed up by their rec staff and mascot Gulliver, a sea gull who’s flown in and made the island home. From pool parties to cannonball contests to movie nights, there are more chances to dance, splash and just be a kid than you’d believe. ESCAPE TO THE CAPE The oceanfront Shoals Club, which overlooks the Point of Cape Fear, offers a spacious swimming pool, along with a separate baby pool for

OVER THE TOP Bald Head Island’s been around a while—our lighthouse is emblematic of that— but we’re always reinventing ways to have a good time. KISS THE SKY Climb the 108 steps that carry you to the top of Old Baldy Lighthouse, commissioned by Thomas Jefferson, and still standing more than 200 years later. When you reach the newly restored lanthorn room at the top, you’ll enjoy a panorama of Bald Head Island that will take your breath away. After you descend, take time to visit the Smith Island Museum of History, where you’ll find artifacts revealing the daily duties of a lighthouse keeper. Join a night climb on select evenings to experience a starlit view of the surrounding area.

TIME TRAVEL For a deeper dive into days gone by, take a historic tour from the Old Baldy Foundation and hear about brushes with pirates, the trio of lighthouses that have graced the island, and the brave lifesaving servicemen who once did duty at Cape Fear Station. You’ll also learn about Fort Holmes, the Confederate gun battery located within walking distance of the lighthouse grounds.

Jennifer Van Ness:

BRINGING AN OWNER’S PERSPECTIVE TO SERVING YOU

Jennifer Van Ness has always felt that one of the greatest gifts she, and her husband Jim, ever gave their children is Bald Head Island. Jennifer enjoys sharing the gift of Bald Head with others and helping them with all of their island real estate needs. When she’s not at our office in the marina, you can find Jennifer running the wynds of Bald Head, playing tennis at the Bald Head Island Club, out on the water with Jim and their children Ashton and Hank, or enjoying the beach with her dog Oliver.

“Jennifer is without a doubt the best realtor we have ever had. We have been coming to Bald Head Island for many years and had always dreamed of buying a home here. We began the process by merely asking for information on a listing online. She responded immediately. I am not sure I have ever encountered anyone who has better follow-up skills than Jennifer. We ultimately purchased a home and had the easiest and smoothest closing we have ever experienced because of her efforts. We cannot more emphatically endorse Jennifer.” - Susan & Jeff Sampson, Louisville, KY

THE SOUTHERN LIVING IDEA HOUSE AT CAPE FEAR STATION MARRIES STYLE AND SETTING, ELEVATING BOTH IN THE PROCESS. FEEL FREE TO TAKE A LOOK AROUND, AND BY ALL MEANS, MAKE YOURSELF AT HOME. 46

S

Some things, the saying goes, are just meant to be. And so it was with the 2017 Southern Living Idea House coming to Bald Head Island. In all, nearly 9,000 guests toured the home and countless readers of the magazine found something—Those floors! That wallpaper!—to covet, or better yet, to bring into their own homes with their own twist. But first, a bit of background on how it all came together. In nearly 30 years of presenting Idea Houses, Southern Living had never built one on an island, let alone an island only accessible by boat. In Bald Head’s case, construction materials travel here not by passenger ferry, but by a barge pushed by a tug. When the wind kicks up, so do the waves on the Cape Fear River. It’s the captain’s call on any given day whether the barge runs or not, and he errs, as he should, on the side of caution. Beyond weather, every year the turn time for building an Idea House is driven by strict publishing deadlines. Typically, it takes about a year for a home to be built on the island, a time frame that would need to be cut in half. Challenges aside, a few key elements tipped the scales in Bald Head Island’s favor as the ideal location. First, the intrinsic charm of Cape Fear Station—the island’s final master-planned community—and The Common, a park at its center, were undeniable. As it happened, a perfect corner homesite overlooking The Common was available. Second, the owners of that site were Jeff and Lisa Sanderson of Whitney Blair Custom Homes, whose company has been named Southern Living Custom Home Builder of the Year not once, but twice. Just up the road, Sanderson is collaborating with Bald Head Island Limited on the Southern Living Inspired Community, an idyllic neighborhood recently awarded Community of the Year by the magazine. With the setting and builder identified, architect Eric Moser and interior designer Lindsey Coral Harper were invited to lend their considerable design and decorating chops to the project. They jumped at the chance. In the end, the inspiring results speak for themselves. That the Idea House was completed, decorated to the nines, photographed, and open for tours in little more than six months is a testament not only to the efforts of the core design and building team, but also to the work of countless suppliers, craftsmen and yes, barge captains, who worked day and night to get it done. What began with a small handful of people who respected and trusted one another expanded into a community effort connected by purpose and by place, exemplified in a single home, in a singularly special neighborhood—Cape Fear Station on Bald Head Island. Bronze French doors and transom windows flood the open living and dining areas with natural light, while wicker occasional chairs make an unexpectedly fresh appearance around the dining room table. The real scene stealer here is the wood plank floor, its wide boards salvaged from the original floor joists of an early 1900s-era tobacco company and left unsanded, character fully intact. haven 49

It’s all about bringing the outside in and the inside out.

Doing the dishes isn’t as much of a chore when you enjoy this kind of view. Open shelving keeps glasses and bowls within quick reach, inviting guests to help themselves. An outdoor kitchen blurs the lines between indoors and out and takes full advantage of the island’s subtropical climate.

“Quite frankly, I just hope folks will want to take off their shoes, throw open the doors, come in and plop down someplace and just say ‘Ahhh,’” said Idea House architect Eric Moser. The tranquil first floor master bedroom invites just this sort of surrender with its calming blue palette, king-size bed and cozy love seat. Handpainted grasscloth on the walls lends additional texture and interest, as do the carefully selected landscape and abstract paintings.

Orange you ready for a little color in your life? Upstairs, a clementine-inspired guest room and adjacent bath can’t help but make you feel happy. The vibrant painted green floor in the bath is a daring choice, but it grounds the space and seems just right. “We do like to use a lot of color and we layer it, whether it’s a color on the floor or a textured wallpaper on the walls,” said interior designer Lindsey Coral Harper.

Rattan makes a dramatic return in the upstairs master bedroom, where a show-stopping vintage fan chair evokes a scallop or a tulip, depending on your point of view. Sunny handtrimmed wallpaper brightens the mood and plays well with the light that streams in from a trio of windows that front the house and French doors that open onto a second-story back porch. The bath is timeless with its marble floors and double pedestal sinks. Yellow grosgrain ribbon bordering the wainscoting and ceiling provides an unexpected touch.

Everyone’s favorite room is the second-story crofter cottage, Bald Head Island’s upscale answer to the garage apartment. Marine blue window trim and a smart teal daybed provide the backdrop, but this space is ruled by the riot of monkeys climbing up the printed wallpaper. A banana chandelier at the center of the ceiling provides motivation.

“I try to do something fun and unique in all the rooms so they all have a little bit of a personality or something that you didn’t expect,” said Harper. Guests are delighted to sleep in these charming quarters, complete with a backgammon table and an efficiency kitchen for pouring that last glass of wine or first cup of coffee.

Thoughtful architectural standards require porches on Bald Head Island homes to be deep, and this one is no exception, easily accommodating an outdoor dining table with seating for six. Dinner al fresco can be followed by s’mores around the fire pit or a jaunt around The Common, Cape Fear Station’s community park, where kids of all ages and their four-legged friends are always welcome.

“Out here, you’re always hearing the sounds of dogs barking and kids playing,” said Sanderson.

Many Happy Returns Chris Shank’s Arrival at the Conservancy is a Homecoming

Christopher Shank, PhD Bald Head Island Conservancy Executive Director 74

W

hen Chris Shank took over as Executive Director of the Bald Head Island Conservancy in 2016, he had big shoes to fill. Former island property owner and perennial vacationer Odette Arnold recently sat down with Shank to explore his longtime connection with Bald Head and his vision for protecting its future.

ARNOLD: What brought you to this area? Do you have a personal history with the Cape Fear region? SHANK: I love the southeastern Carolina coast. I grew up in Maryland on the Chesapeake Bay, but my mom was from Charlotte and we came to Southport and Holden Beach starting when I was about six or seven. We went every year— my grandparents, my parents and my siblings—and it was the magical time of the year. My grandfather kept his fishing boats in Southport Marina. We would go waterskiing up and down the waterway, and fishing in and out of the creeks. Then my grandparents passed away and my parents became the grandparents, and it was my family, my brother’s family and my sister’s family. The legacy kept flowing through there. I remember when I was a kid—this would have been in the ‘70s—we would go into the ocean and fish on the shoals. And when we would go by Bald Head Island, we called it “Mystery Island.” There wasn’t much here. We would stop in the marina and get snacks from a little shack, but Bald Head was such a mysterious place back in those days. I remember thinking: I wonder what goes on over there. Also, my PhD research was on the Cape Fear. This whole area is just so special to me. It’s beautiful, but there’s something about the sense of this region. So having a chance to come work amongst the habitats here with people that feel the same way about the area that I do, that’s pretty special. Texas [where I was working before] was great … but it’s not this area. Sometimes I’ll be in a golf cart riding around or just doing something in the marsh or going fishing at the Point, and I think it’s kind of crazy that I actually work here.

At the time of this interview, you have been the Executive Director of the Bald Head Island Conservancy for just over a year. You succeeded someone who served in that role for the past decade. What fresh approach do you bring as the Conservancy’s new director? When I came, the infrastructure and the legacy of the Conservancy were already here. The Conservancy was

established in 1983, so that’s over three decades. Suzanne Dorsey, my predecessor, had a lasting impact. We have the Barrier Island Study Center, which is a really big deal for us because it gives us an infrastructure by which we can continue to grow. I think we have a really big future, but the only reason we have that future is because over the past 30 years, those who came before have been constantly building the pieces, which allows me to look to the future and really engage, maybe at a level that we haven’t done before.

How would you describe your leadership style? One thing is, I’m always one to listen. I tell folks that we don’t always have to agree, but I’m always willing to listen. Respectful discourse … I’m a huge believer in that. I think it’s really valuable to the Conservancy to have as much dialogue as we can with every visitor, every resident, everybody who has a stake in the future of Bald Head Island. One thing I really want my staff to do is always feel like they’re learning and growing. And sometimes that’s by challenging them to do things they haven’t done before. It doesn’t have to be perfect—I don’t expect that—but if you try hard, I can’t ask any more than that. And just from an organizational standpoint with the Conservancy, every decision, every program is not necessarily going to work, but they all will be started with the core idea that we are trying to learn and tweak things and do as well as we can every day.

What are your impressions of the community and the people who live here both full time and part time? My wife and I were fortunate to live on the island for the first seven or eight months when we came to the area. It was beautiful, and I think really valuable that I did live here for the amount of time that I did. It really helped me engage with the community and get a sense of the rhythm of Bald Head. It helped me understand the people who live here full time and what they experience on a day-to-day basis. Once I moved off, I now get to experience what most people do by riding the ferry back and forth. It allows me to hear a lot of conversations from people who don’t live here, and hearing their perspectives on a constant basis is really important. Because the Conservancy’s not just here for the people who live here, it’s here for the people that come here once a year, first time ever, every two weeks, whatever it is. We need to be able to connect with all of them.

BY ODETTE EMBERT ARNOLD PHOTOGRAPHY HARRY TAYLOR

The folks who live here and have had houses here for a long time, they are really the core of Bald Head and they have the history and the stories. Not just about the Conservancy, but what the island was like 20, 30, even 40 years ago when the Generator Society folks were here. Those are awesome stories and it’s fun spending time listening to them.

What have turtle nesting numbers been like the past few years? We had 100 nests in 2016, and 100 nests in 2015, but in 2014, I think we had 35 or 40 nests. And we only had 39 in 2017. So it comes and goes. If you look back in history over the last 30 years or so that we’ve had data, it is not consistent. Are there patterns and can we predict? It’s hard to say. Nature has a lot of inherent variability. The climate can change from year to year, the ocean currents can be a little bit different, the scents coming off the coastal zone can be a little bit different, the success rate of the hatchlings from year to year may not be the same. And turtles won’t typically nest every year. They will usually at least wait one or two years, and we have data on which moms return. Unfortunately we can’t speak turtle and there are no signs out there that say, “Bald Head This Way,” so it’s an unknown. It’s nature.

Clearly the turtles are a symbol for the Conservancy and the island, and protecting the beaches is critical, but what about the other environments and how the Conservancy is involved? In other words, it’s not just turtles. No, it’s not just turtles. Turtles are almost the advertising firm for everything else we do. They are obviously hugely important, but they are just one piece. A wonderful thing about Bald Head is, you have a beautiful, complex maritime forest that is a unique coastal habitat in this area. There are other places that have one, but I’m not sure they are as thick and as lush and as healthy as what we have here. We also have the tidal creek salt marsh. People look at it and they see the beauty, but there is so much more. The beauty represents so many complex and amazing processes that are tied together, like the way the plants function with the animals. The interactions that take place there are truly remarkable. And then we have the dunes system. The dunes are obviously important for the turtles, but they are also the first 76

line of protection against storms and waves. If we didn’t have the dune system and we got a storm surge, it would go into the forest and the salt water from the ocean would destroy the forest. The forest holds down the entire center part of the island, so it serves as the anchor. The marsh is kind of the buffer for the water energy flowing onto the island, keeping it from eroding the backside of the island. In addition to being a food source for things, the plants also secure the backside. So they each need each other, and without one of them, you’d end up losing all three. That’s one thing we need to focus on in the future: increasing our ability to educate people about how each piece is connected. Another part that kind of goes unseen is the aquifer. It’s a fresh water lens of groundwater below the maritime forest. If we didn’t have that, salt water would come in underground to the tree roots and the trees would disappear. The fresh water sits on it like a bubble because it’s less dense, and the salt water goes underneath. Most people don’t have any idea that fresh water bubble exists, but it’s a huge piece of why this island is successful.

Are there people from other parts of the world who want to come and see what you’re doing here and conduct their research in this environment? I think we do probably have some awareness internationally, but what I’ve been trying to do is use my old connections with UNC Wilmington and with Chapel Hill. We have some projects with NC State researchers, too. I think regional is our focus. The truth is, the personal connection with the habitats here is really important for graduate students. Being a strong regional player in research is a high bar in and of itself. The accessibility that we have to these habitats is pretty special. You don’t see a lot of places where you have a science organization that basically is in and amongst habitats that are largely unspoiled. It’s pretty remarkable. But the public doesn’t read science journals, so we need to get the word out.

What are you doing to increase awareness and involvement? I’m working on an idea to really ramp up our citizen scientist effort, with the goal that we build a long-term ecological research program that sets us up for 10 years, 20 years, 30 years down the line. And it’s not just Conservancy staff, it’s also every child and every adult that comes through the door when they go on a tour of the island. We give them data to collect

for us. If they go to the creek, we give them an instrument they can put in the water and take measurements that we can then use. By taking part, they’re going to have a stronger interest in the other aspects the Conservancy focuses on, and it becomes personal to them.

So you’re actively doing some of that, but you’d like it to be a daily thing and involve as many people as you can get? Yes, and we need to get people to buy into the future of the Conservancy, but also the future of Bald Head. People buy property here and they want to know that when they pass it on to the next generation, it’s going to be just as beautiful. When they go fishing in the marsh, there’s going to be just as many fish out there. If they go to the beach, the dunes are going to be there, and the sea turtles have a dune system to nest on. And so we have to involve them as much as we can.

While what you do here is serious science, it’s fun for people to be a part of it. We do a lot of different types of programs: birding, tours of the habitats, that sort of thing. And I started a public lecture series at the Bald Head Island Club last year with experts speaking on

various topics. We have a dinner, so it invites new folks to the Conservancy in a much more social setting. One thing I really want to do is increase our volunteer base. We have a wonderful legacy of turtle nest monitors and volunteers in Turtle Central, and a variety of other things. But we can do a better job of asking folks to help us with the science. The youth programs we have are great. The key is to engage each age in a way that, as they become teenagers, they still want to come back and participate. And if you get the little kids involved, then you are probably getting their parents interested, too.

Your 10-year-old self called it Mystery Island, and now you are extremely invested when you come to work here. I’m very invested in it. I care about all of it, but to me the marshes are super special because I’ve spent time studying them and I’ve taught classes about them. The salt marshes here are absolutely brilliant, so abundant with life. The way life recycles itself in the marshes here is amazing. They are relatively unspoiled and I feel part of them. So having the chance to make sure we protect the integrity of all these habitats, but especially for me, those creeks … that’s just a huge deal.

COMMON GROUND Generations of Islanders are Connected by a Love of Place BY ODETTE EMBERT ARNOLD | PHOTOGRAPHY ANNE LILES

Talk to members of some families who have been coming to Bald Head Island for decades, and they will tell you about sitting on the porch and chatting with their grandparents, as well as their teenagers. They will mention crabbing in the creek, scouring the beaches for shells, and striking out in the golf cart to search for fireflies at dusk or gig for flounder at midnight. Here, they will tell you, board games and puzzles tend to replace digital devices, and the unspoiled natural beauty provides the setting for adventures large and small.

These families, and many others, describe Bald Head Island’s special ability to eliminate

generation gaps as family members spanning three or four generations come together to share timeless pursuits and appreciate the island’s own eternal nature.

Bring the family! Top row: Kyle Barger with daughter Katie, John Preiss beside father Kirk Preiss. Bottom row: Amy Preiss Barger, Jack Preiss, Donna Preiss holding granddaughter Mae Preiss, Brooke Barger and Nobles Preiss. Dogs Snickerdoodle and Jackie pose in front.

THE PREISSES When the Preiss family gathers on Bald Head Island, they are likely to be four generations strong. Donna and Kirk Preiss are often joined not only by their children and grandchildren, but by their parents, as well. Amy Preiss Barger said her dad first visited Bald Head Island in 1972 with college buddies from Chapel Hill for a weekend of exploration and adventure. Her mother heard those stories, but she didn’t visit until they decided to look for a beach house in 1998. Amy said her aunt and uncle actually wound up buying the first house her parents were considering on the island. In 2000, the Preiss family bought a house on South Bald Head Wynd, which they sold in 2004, opting for a house on the harbor. Describing the strength of her family’s ties to Bald Head Island, Amy said, “My children have never known a Fourth of July 86

anywhere else. And until very recently, I don’t think they even knew other beaches.” While the whole family is typically on Bald Head for all summer holidays, from Memorial Day through Labor Day and all spring breaks, Independence Day is a steadfast tradition. “We get into all of it,” she said. “We decorate the golf cart for the parade, literally with duct tape and stuff from the dollar store. It isn’t about being fancy or elaborate, it’s just something we all do together.” Amy said practically everything about her marriage is wrapped up with Bald Head Island, too. “I was 22 and had just started dating Kyle when my parents bought their first house on the island,” she remembered, “so he went there with me from the beginning. I have pictures of us sitting on the porch rocking our children when they were babies. We have so many memories here.” Their daughters Brooke and Katie are now 12 and 9. While all of the family members weighed in with what they love most about Bald Head Island, it boiled down to being

together. Amy’s brother John has three children: Nobles, 9; Jack, 8; and Mae, 6. “The cousins are relatively close in age, and they do everything together when they are here,” said Amy. “Even though we all live in Raleigh, we are so busy with school, work and activities. Here, there are no barriers,” she said. “It’s like we are all in summer camp together.” Even the family dogs get more quality time, said Amy. She and her mother have labradoodles from the same litter. “On the island, Lilly Boo and Snickerdoodle actually live together and play together,” she laughed. “They get to be sisters here.” While the Preiss family has been going to Bald Head Island for 20 years, they constantly discover new things to do, or add activities as the kids get older. They recently started participating in the Conservancy’s turtle nest excavations, went on the Ghost Walk for the first time, and Katie ran the Turtle Trot with her grandfather. “It’s a special place for us,” she said. “We all just love it here.” That sentiment was expressed time and again, by all the members of these families, and it’s undoubtedly shared by countless others. It’s rare to find a place with timeless appeal across decades and generations, especially given the distractions of life today, but such is the magic of Bald Head Island. Common ground, indeed. Right: John Preiss and son Jack enjoy the ocean breeze. Below: Cousins Mae Preiss and Katie Barger can’t resist getting their feet wet.

THE COSGROVES Chris Cosgrove remembers his parents, Eleanor and Ken Cosgrove, talking about going to Bald Head Island for camping trips in the early 1960s, sharing it with one of the island’s only full-time residents: a pig named Gertrude. When his family built the seventh home on the island in 1975, “it was a huge leap of faith,” Chris said. “There was no power, but we had a giant old Army generator that we ran 30 minutes in the morning and 45 minutes at night.” Chris said the house also had a gas stove and refrigerator, as well as a kerosene heater and fireplace. “At night, it would be pitch black, and we would need to carry a gas lamp just to walk around,” he said. The youngest of five boys, Chris has been coming to Bald Head Island since the age of six, or 45 years and counting. His family would retreat to the island from their home in Hendersonville, N.C., year round, staying four or five days at a time. Both of his parents were licensed airplane pilots, and Chris remembers them flying their single-engine Cessna 182 to Bald Head Island. “Depending on conditions, my dad might land on East Beach, South Beach or on the golf course,” said Chris. “He could land the plane on holes 18, 17 or 1, but 18 was his favorite.” Chris said his parents and Pat Thomas, another islander who was a pilot, teamed up to build a makeshift airstrip. “Basically they dragged sand with some tractors and some grass seed sort of took hold,” he explained. “It could be a difficult landing, especially with the wind coming off the ocean so often.” Island security was located in a trailer near Old Baldy lighthouse, he noted. “If you needed help, you would call on the CB radio and hope someone was listening.” Getting to the island by water required equal flexibility, he recalled. “We would meet a man named Donny Potter at Southport Marina,” he said. “Sometimes we had to wait for him for hours. Then he would drop us off at the gazebo and we would hike to where the vehicles were.” Chris said if the dilapidated old green Blazer wouldn’t start, they’d have to haul the luggage to the house on Mourning Warbler Trail, across from the 17th green. “In those days, it was a lot rougher. We had to bring everything over, even our food, because there were no stores,” he said. “You might have ice; you might not. You just made do.” When the island banned gas vehicles in the early 80s, they grandfathered in anything already on the island, said Chris. “At

that time, we had a white Army jeep that we tried to keep going, but it died in 1985 after getting swamped on a late-night fishing expedition. We pulled it out with a backhoe, but it wouldn’t run anymore,” he said. Chris recalled his family’s friendships with Charlie Young and Thad Wester, as well as other property owners of that era. These earliest homeowners were known as The Generator Society since they arrived on the island before electric power did. In 1997, Chris and his wife Billie moved to Wilmington from Gainesville, Fla., which meant they could get to the island more often. Their three children—Spencer, 23; Elly, 20; and Lena Rose, 12—have been going to Bald Head Island their entire lives, too. “We did, and still do, multigenerational things, like fishing at the Point, crabbing on the creek, swimming at the beach and playing golf,” said Chris. “It was a special place because initially, nothing else was here. We chatted a lot, did projects together, and neighbors depended on each other. We borrowed tools and just pitched in to help each other. There’s nothing like it in the world.” The Cosgroves sold their original island home in 1999, and built a new house on Middle Island in 2001. They sold that house in 2013, but have never stopped coming to the island. Billie’s sister, Lena Eldridge, owns a house in Harbour Village with her family. Their extended families spend time there frequently, including the summer of 2017 when 50 of them gathered on Bald Head Island for a family reunion. A smaller group got together again at Thanksgiving.

THE TRASKS Like Chris Cosgrove, Dargan Tunstall said her parents, Judy and Web Trask, came to Bald Head Island years before they built a house here. Every year they would join friends for the U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament and dine at the old Bald Head Inn that has long since washed away. While Web came to the island as a child with his father, Raiford Trask, Sr., Judy’s first visit was as an adult. Dargan said her parents came with her aunt, Sue Trask Coupland, and her husband Donnie. The two couples stayed with the Couplands’ friends, the Johnsons, in one of the few homes on the island, all of which were powered solely by generators. There were no paved roads either, she said, but they have vivid memories of taking the Johnsons’ Scout Jeep down the long, dirt road (now Federal Road) to go fishing at East Beach. Right: Surf’s up! Twins Brewer and Mabel Tunstall enjoy catching waves and rays on the island. Below: Family time casts a wide net on BHI. Left to right: John Tunstall, Jack Tunstall, Brewer Tunstall and Web Trask.

Carrying on the tradition of coming to Bald Head since he was a boy, Web Trask gathers with his wife Judy (front middle) and one of his daughters, Dargan Trask Tunstall (far right). Dargan's three children are (from left) Mabel, Jack and Brewer, with dog Haisley.

Dargan recalled that, as children, she and her sisters Carroll Eckel and Mabel Kitchin would go to the island for three or four weeks at a stretch, spending time with aunts, uncles and cousins. The Tunstalls bought their current house on Red Cedar Trail in 2007, and still gather there regularly. Dargan and Carroll spend every Fourth of July on the island with the Tunstalls and Eckels competing against each other in the cardboard boat race. “Neither of us has won it,” Dargan pointed out, “but we did come in second one year.” The extended Trask clan still holds to the time-honored traditions the girls remember from childhood. “It’s a lot of family time, most of which is centered around the beach,” said Dargan. “My dad, my husband John and our 14-year-old son Jack also play golf together. Mabel and Brewer, our 16-year-old twin girls, love to do photo shoots all over the island, with the natural beauty as

backdrop.” “It’s simple over there,” she summarized. “We just sit on the porch and hear the trees rustling and watch for the deer. We play cards and games, do puzzles. The older the kids get, the more they want to bring friends with them, which is great. We just pull out the air mattresses.” While so many things have remained exactly the same, Dargan says there are changes for which she is grateful. “The Maritime Market was a welcome addition,” she said, “and although we eat in most of the time, it’s nice having restaurant options now, too.” Dargan said her parents love to spend time with their children and grandchildren on the island, and just like they did four or more decades ago, they still come with friends for the king mackerel tournament every year. haven 91

[ EPILOGUE ]

The Generator Society Now Three Generations Strong THEY WERE HERE BEFORE FERRY SERVICE, shops or paved roads. Even before electricity. Beginning in the early 1970s, 19 families loaded planks of wood onto small skiffs, bringing their own home building supplies across the Cape Fear River to Bald Head Island. They formed a singular bond in those days, sharing a remarkable sense of adventure and a deep love of place. Thad and Lee Wester built one of the first two homes on the island, and their influence through the decades unquestionably helped create the island so many people love today. Dr. Wester was not only the first Mayor of the Village of Bald Head Island, he was the founding President of both the Bald Head Island Property Owners Association and the Bald Head Island Conservancy. The Conservancy named its fishing school for him, and he served as dean of that program. In the months leading up to Carolina Power & Light’s January 1981 installation of a circuit that ran under the Cape Fear River from Southport, Dr. Wester presented framed certificates to the other founding families that read:

Lee and Thad Wester

DURING THE EARLY YEARS OF DEVELOPMENT AND MODERNIZATION OF BALD HEAD ISLAND, THERE WERE FAMILIES WHO ENDURED INCONVENIENCE AND PRIVATION IN EXCHANGE FOR THE PRIVILEGE OF BEING MARRIED TO BALD HEAD IN A UNIQUE WAY KNOWN ONLY TO A FEW. IN RECOGNITION OF THOSE FAMILIES AND THEIR ACCOMPLISHMENTS, THEY ARE HEREBY DECLARED MEMBERS IN PERPETUITY IN …“THE GENERATOR SOCIETY.”

A Generator Society reunion in 1993 brought Bald Head Island’s “Founding Families” back together. Shown fourth and sixth from the left in the front row are Thad and Lee Wester.

Ginny Wester Reeves, Lee and Thad’s daughter, recalls being part of that legacy: “Growing up at Bald Head was nothing less than an adventure. It was clear to us that our father had a vested interest in this special place. His passion to preserve the uniqueness of the island was evident in all he did for Bald Head. It was important to my dad that his grandchildren understand his love of nature and the responsibilities that come with that. My husband and son have both become an active part of the Thad Wester Fishing School as a result. While we have moved from the era of generators and CB radios to more modern amenities, my family is able to enjoy the island’s beauty and uniqueness that still remains intact.”

If you’re looking for a great dive, MoJo’s on the Harbor, fronting the Bald Head Island

Marina, delivers. Owned and run by John and Andrea Pitera, the mood here is all

about letting your hair down. “We want you to have fun, to party, to let loose a little bit,” says John. The bar scene is lively year ‘round, with its large screen TVs and dollar bills

taped to the rafters. Be sure to ask a regular why they’re there. In the warmer months, do yourself a favor and be seated outside on the open deck, or better yet, upstairs in the second-story screened porch. Along with dramatic water views, you’ll be treated to a variety of seafood selections. For a change of pace, order a bowl of pasta and

sample one of John’s secret family recipes. In the summer a master chef presents

outstanding sushi and sashimi. Time it right, and you can enjoy live music, or if the crowd is feeling it, karaoke. Next door to MoJo’s, the Piteras’ newest venture, Honey’s BBQ, specializes in pulled pork, brisket and slow-cooked ribs, smoked overnight until just right. You can dine outside at picnic tables or grab your meal to go. Just be sure to call ahead to ensure your big family take-out order is all lined up.

Just up the road, Delphina Cantina serves up an equally laid-back attitude and

fresh Latin-inspired dishes prepared by Executive Chef Carlos Rojas and his talented kitchen staff. Born in Veracruz, Mexico, Carlos spent his childhood watching his

grandmother prepare meals in an outdoor brick oven over an open fire, and he carries

on her passion for sharing food made with love. Delphina’s most popular menu items include the tequila-marinated shrimp tacos, and the Cubano, a twist on the classic

Cuban sandwich. At dinner time make it a point to try the Madrid-style shrimp & grits, seasoned with onions, mushrooms, aged Spanish chorizo, garlic saffron, cream and

Jerez, a Spanish sherry. In the summer months, you’ll want to visit the restaurant’s

nearby Luna Forest, an outdoor patio with a warm atmosphere and cold beer. Be sure to look for the portrait of namesake Luna, the late great island dog owned by proprietors Harper Peterson and Plunkett Dodge. Follow the smell of coffee and waffle cones around the corner and you’ll find Sandpiper Ice Cream & Coffee. Early

risers show up at 7:30 a.m. for its premium java, while late night snackers stand in line for homemade ice cream and milkshakes. Always worth the wait!

In the warmer months, enjoy beer and wine while you watch the boats come and

go from the deck at Will o’ the Wisp, just around the corner from MoJo’s beside the Sail Shop. A quick call to Marina Pizza (operating out of Delphina’s kitchen), gets you

an easy dinner delivered. Or simply order popcorn and nuts to accompany that Pinot or IPA.

A brief cart ride down Federal Road and a couple of quick turns takes you straight

to the Maritime Market Café, where you’ll find a salad bar, pizza by the slice, and an array of gourmet sandwiches, wraps and burgers. If you plan to get an early start, the

café is tops for breakfast. Along with everyday offerings like pancakes and biscuits, you’ll want to try the chef’s daily specials, which could be Nutella stuffed French toast, a Belgian waffle or savory crab and eggs Benedict. Owner Claude Pope is the

consummate host, putting on special wine dinners at the café on occasion, along with lavish oyster roasts under the adjacent Forest Pavilion, prepared by Executive Chef

Marc Berruet. Don’t miss the chance to watch the sun go down and the full moon come up with Pope and a few hundred of his closest friends at a monthly Howl at the Moon party, typically held at Beach Access 42. Everyone is invited—just BYOB and an appetizer to share with the crowd.

A full or temporary membership (available through your rental company) opens the door to four different dining venues at the Shoals Club, overlooking the Cape Fear Point. The most casual is the kid-friendly Sandbar Grille, located poolside. The grille’s

menu includes Caribbean, Asian, Southwest and local influences that focus on light, fresh ingredients. Recent favorites include the jerk tuna sandwich with Hawaiian slaw

and Chipotle aioli, and the salmon BLT with a green tomato chow-chow and garlic aioli. For less adventurous palates, chicken fingers, burgers and pizza are always available, too.

Overlooking the Shoals Club’s pool on a series of cascading terraces is The

Verandahs, a new outdoor seating area with a more refined atmosphere than the

Sandbar Grille. Creatively composed dishes like chilled lobster tail with cucumber-

mango salad or Tandoori grouper with cucumber tzatziki sauce rule the day here, along with gourmet sandwiches. Both lunch and dinner service are offered seasonally.

Watch the sun go down over the ocean while you dine al fresco or in the lounge at

Latitudes Wine Bar at the Shoals Club. Inspired small plates like seared sea scallops with saffron aioli, pickled fennel, jalapeno and sweet corn or ahi tuna with sweet and sour slaw, crispy wonton and wasabi aioli will make you want to return. Oftentimes an acoustic guitarist lends additional atmosphere to the scene. Make sure you make

reservations to dine at AQUA, the Shoals Club’s premier dining venue. Seafood lovers will appreciate the restaurant’s superb locally sourced fish and shellfish. Executive Chef Caitlyn Fisher relies heavily on local vegetables and cheeses, too, so the menu

changes with the seasons. If you don’t enjoy seafood, a beautifully prepared beef filet or NY strip typically appears on the menu, along with creative options for vegetarians

like an end-of-summer tart made with homemade goat cheese and ricotta custard with roasted vegetables.

Located along South Beach, the Bald Head Island Club offers several dining

options for members and temporary members. The casual Pelicatessen, known by locals simply as the Peli, is open year-round for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Along with kid-friendly grilled cheese sandwiches, chicken fingers and burgers, you’ll find fried seafood baskets, gourmet sandwiches and lighter salads. Their pizzas are popular

as well, with gluten-free varieties available. The Bald Head Island Club pool area is

undergoing extensive renovations, which will impact the Pelicatessen’s operating hours during part of 2018. Be sure to call ahead to verify hours.

The Palms and Palms Terrace at the Club provide a pub-style atmosphere and the convenience of open seating—no reservations required for lunch or dinner. Along

with a hearty meal, you’ll enjoy the views of the croquet greensward and golf holes 10 and 18. Steak lovers will appreciate the variety of cuts offered here, along with

gourmet burgers. Seafood is always on the menu, too, with salmon especially popular. Stop by the Sunday brunch buffet at The Palms and grab a seat on the terrace for a perfect start to your day.

Club Executive Chef John Bell brings a decidedly more upscale approach to

The Grille, which offers a range of seafood, beef, pork and poultry dishes for lunch

and dinner. Order a dozen or two East Coast oysters for the table while you debate which entrée to try. The delicately prepared butter poached lobster served with a

vanilla scented Hollandaise sauce, lemon froth, broccolini and crispy potatoes is truly decadent, while the beef short ribs served with a celery and white chocolate potato

puree, heirloom carrots and natural jus marries unexpected flavors to great effect. Vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike will swoon over the cauliflower steak, perfectly seared and served with chimichurri sauce, kale, black beans and rice. Divine!

RECENTLY, THE VILLAGE OF BALD HEAD ISLAND ANNOUNCED ITS INTENTION TO APPLY FOR A “DARK SKY COMMUNITY” DESIGNATION FROM THE INTERNATIONAL DARK SKY ASSOCIATION, A GROUP THAT PROMOTES THE BENEFITS OF NATURAL NIGHT SKIES TO WILDLIFE AND HUMANS. IF SUCCESSFUL, BALD HEAD WILL BE THE FIRST U.S. EAST COAST COMMUNITY TO EARN THIS SPECIAL DISTINCTION.
