Enhanced productivity with high-performance error diagnosis

Schmersal launches new version of the SD Gateway

The new SDG Fieldbus Gateway from Schmersal enables highperformance error diagnosis, contributing to improved system availability

The Schmersal Group is about to launch a new version of the SD Gateway for its SD bus. Users will be able to take advantage of the improved fault diagnostics offered by the new SDG Fieldbus Gateway. This in turn will help to increase machine and plant productivity by minimising downtime and simplifying commissioning and maintenance. The device is also user friendly and easy to install.

Electronic safety sensors and interlocks with SD interface can transmit comprehensive status and diagnostic data to a higher-level machine control system.

Data from the serially connected switchgear is sent via the SD bus to the SDG fieldbus gateway and then passed on via the fieldbus to the machine control unit - enabling the forwarding of error messages such as overtemperature warnings, faulty actuator warnings and invalid actuator combination messages.

The diagnostic information is transmitted separately from safety signals. Warning notifications enable controlled process shutdown and targeted maintenance so as to prevent process interruptions.

The new variant of the SD Gateway also offers a web server and has a microSD memory card and thus offers the following features:

◆ Event logs can be evaluated in real time via the web interface.

◆ Complete diagnostic data from all safety switchgear devices are displayed in plain text in the browser window.

The new alternatives in power conversion

Power conversion is commonly achieved through phase-angle controllers, transformers and power supplies. But these solutions can either damage heaters, or take up large amounts of space or make it incredibly hard to measure and control the power flow. Watlow’s power conversion technology solves these issues by providing the ability to bring voltage up or down smoothly without having to introduce a bulky power supply. Watlow temperature controllers, such as POWERGLIDE®, are capable of modulating the amplitude of the output voltage, allowing the voltage to step down from 208 volts to as low as 20 volts.

◆ Devices, such as interlocks and control panels, can be controlled directly via the web interface.

◆ The microSD card allows event logs to be exported for evaluation and long-term storage.

◆ The configuration of the series connection is stored on the microSD card to enable seamless device replacement in case of error.

In the near future, Schmersal will further expand the functionalities of the SDG fieldbus gateway so that the data of the connected safety switchgear can be transmitted not only via EtherCAT, but also via the common fieldbus protocols PROFINET, EtherNet/lP and Modbus. In addition, networking options will be expanded through connection to 10-Link and OPC UA communication systems.

An additional and significant benefit of the SD bus system is being retained in the new Gateway: by connecting sensors and interlocks with the SD bus in series (an SD Gateway can communicate with up to 31 safety switchgear devices), this safety solution enables extremely lean wiring and reduces costs without sacrificing Performance Level (series connection for applications up to PL e). Setup and commissioning of an SD installation have been designed to be as convenient and straightforward as possible and all devices receive addresses from the Gateway automatically.

Please contact www.schmersal.com www.tecnicum.com

Lowering the voltage in this way is a great way to drive low-impedance heaters. It can reduce the power distribution rating with smaller fuses and wires, which saves money and space. It can also protect ceramic heaters from breaking. Watlow’s power conversion technology also achieves high power quality without the high cost and added space of a DC power supply.

Power conversion is an essential element of many heating applications. Yet most current power conversion technology is not well suited to cases where heaters are fragile, have ceramic components, or have to ensure safe operation across the globe. No longer do devices have to be engineered around power quality issues. Instead, smooth, stable power changes are possible across a huge variety of outputs, and noise is reduced drastically.

CP Cases: The industry’s best custom protective equipment

In this issue of Products & Services Review, we are pleased to feature CP Cases Ltd as our Product Innovation Award Winner.

It is an honour to shine a spotlight on CP Cases Ltd and recognise its outstanding achievements in product development, creativity and innovation across different sectors including Defence, Police & Security, Broadcast, Medical, Marine, Energy, Aerospace and Secure Comms. Due to its expansive market outreach and unbeatable product capabilities, over the years, its products have received an overwhelming number of positive feedback from both existing and new customers.

CP Cases Ltd is known for designing and manufacturing high-performance protective cases, 19-inch racks and rugged textiles. Used for transport, operation, and storage of essential equipment in commercial and military applications, many products are accredited to MILSTD-810F, rated IP65 and carry NATO stock numbers.

We spoke to Caitlin Bates, Marketing Communications Executive at CP Cases Ltd who explained the role of the company in more detail.

“We offer the broadest range of protective, operational transit cases for broadcast and media, defence and security, medical and scientific and many other sectors. We have an unparalleled range of in-house skills and expertise with rotomoulded plastic, aluminium, laminated plywood, HPP, textiles and CNC foam machining. Our products are available in a wide range of standard sizes but can also be custom designed to meet clients’ requirements.”

CP Cases Ltd has a rich history that dates back to the 1960’s. Peter Ross and Chris Sherwin, the founders of CP Cases Ltd, were both active semi-professional musicians playing regular gigs across London with strong connections in this emerging scene through their association with Jim Marshall, who at that time was launching his first series of 50-Watt Marshall Amps. From a 2-man band in the late 60’s to the hayloft in Shepherd's Bush, and then onto a repurposed deteriorating Victorian laundry in Chiswick, CP Cases Ltd grew vastly in size and popularity.

64 years on and today CP Cases Ltd is globally active across 8 markets with 10 flagship products that are all designed and manufactured in its 31,000 sq. ft warehouse. In this article, we have focussed on its five best-selling products.

Airship

Originally designed to meet the demands of Military

and Defence customers, Airship is a combination of bonded layers of honeycomb PP and rigid closed cell foam. Providing a featherweight block which is then CNC machined to excavate pockets and cavities to exactly match the shape and size of the equipment being protected. Accredited to MIL STD 810 and IP65 compliant, it also features a superior lightweight protective solution, and its patented laminated structure gives exceptional strength-to-weight ratio achieving weight/volume ratios of better than 20kg/m³.

Amazon

Produced using a process called rotomoulding which is ideal for manufacturing tough, waterproof products, using a high-quality polyethylene polymer which thickens at the edges and corners to provide extra strength and impact resistance. Accredited to MIL STD 810 and IP65 compliant, Amazon can accommodate COOL A/C for extreme climates and remains stable in temperatures from -40°C to +70°C. It’s moulded-in Amazon Lip engages positively with body to eliminate lid displacement when subjected to sideways impact (Patent Granted).

ERack

A lightweight, 19-inch ruggedised aluminium electronic transit rack specifically designed for commercial and military applications where protection against physical, climatic and electromagnetic hazards are required, and where

weight, strength and portability are vital issues. Accredited to MIL STD 810 and IP65 compliant, ERack is highly customisable to client’s applications with short lead times and efficient pricing. It also fits EZG3 slide rails with standard chassis depths available from 350mm to 870mm.

SatRack

Introduced over 10 years ago, SatRack is the ideal ruggedised 19-inch rack solution for flyaway ENG systems and broadcasters worldwide. Designed to achieve super-lightweight solutions for rack mounted portable satellite equipment, it is available in both full 19-inch and half rack sizes. Conforming to IATA guidelines for checked in baggage, the SatRack is ideal for ‘carry on’ applications that require rugged, highly portable, rack-mounted equipment.

The outer bag can feature an external label holder with the option to stack multiple units with added security using optional stacking straps. The 19-inch frame is suspended in a lightweight 10mm rigid honeycombed polypropylene (Astro board) outer shell with angled elastomeric anti vibration mounts and is available in two shore hardnesses that provide 40mm of ‘sway’ space between the rack and outer shell and come available in various grades to give alternative suspension characteristics suiting differing payloads.

Whether debating a products quality, innovation, value for money, brand reputation or customer experience, CP Cases Ltd believe there are several product capabilities which ensure that its products outperform competitors.

Caitlin explained, “For example, our Airship is exceptionally lightweight and there is no equivalent product currently on the market. Additionally, all of our products can be tailored to meet individual clients needs unlike other manufacturers. Whether it’s size, weight or internal features, we can alter any of our original products to meet certain requirements.”

Moving forward, CP Cases Ltd is keen to continue reaching a wider audience through attending a number of exhibitions in 2024 to demonstrate its outstanding product capabilities and to connect with like-minded industry leaders whilst learning about the latest industry trends. CP Cases Ltd will be attending: Security and Policing 2024, Eurosatory 2024, and the IBC Show 2024.

CP Cases Ltd is also hot on the heels of Industry 4.0 which is known as the fourth industrial revolution. With manufacturers around the world looking to integrate new technologies that include IoT, cloud computing analytics and AI, CP Cases Ltd will endeavour to move forward with the times as it looks at the potential of combining smart machines and smart factories into its manufacturing processes to help produce goods more efficiently and productively throughout the value chain.

Colour Graphics plugs a sustainable hole in the market with Soyang Europe

The Walsall-based large-format print company began using Soyang SL-F04 Premium Solar Greyback Frontlit Banner material in response to a rising demand for PVC-free banner work

Walsall-based large-format print business Colour Graphics has revealed how its use of Soyang’s SL-F04 Premium Solar Greyback Frontlit banner material has allowed the company to expand its sustainable offering and win profitable new work from environment-focused customers.

Established more than 25 years ago, Colour Graphics offers a wide range of printing services including largeformat signage, exhibition displays, marketing materials and event graphics.

While demand for its print services in general has been on the rise, Colour Graphics noted a particular increase in interest for banner printing, specifically more planet friendly solutions. In response, the company took the decision to begin offering PVC-free banner printing, allowing customers to select a more sustainable option.

Having worked with Soyang Europe for nearly 10 years, Colour Graphics again turned to the specialist supplier for a solution. After testing a number of products, Colour Graphics identified Soyang’s SL-F04 Premium Solar Greyback Frontlit banner material as the ideal product to meet the demand for more environmentally friendly banners.

A 100% polyester woven fabric coated with a grey back, Soyang SL-F04 banner material offers users a smooth surface and full opacity, making it an effective solution for printed applications such as banners, roll-up banners and home décor.

The fire-resistant fabric – available in widths of up to 5m – is compatible with UV, Latex and (eco) solvent printing technologies. Suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, it is also degradable and Oekotex Standard 100 Certificated.

“There is a big stigma around the use of PVC, and we were getting asked a lot for non-PVC materials when producing

banners,” Colour Graphics’ Sales and Marketing Manager James Birch says. “As we have such a strong relationship with Soyang Europe, we knew they would be able to help us find a solution.”

The decision has proved hugely popular with Colour Graphics customers, with James revealing that the company has been able to win new work from clients that themselves have a strong focus on limiting their environmental impact.

Colour Graphics has been running the material on its new Matic Hera impulse welder, allowing it to produce all sorts of short to medium-term banner pieces such as pocket banners and café banner systems.

“We tested out a few non-PVC banner materials with the impulse welder and were really impressed with the results of the Soyang product. Non-PVC banner material is notoriously tricky to weld; we’re really pleased to add this high-performing material to our own range,” James adds.

“By offering this new service, we are plugging a hole in the market created by the stigma of PVC and the need to satisfy environmental requirements,” James continues. “For some of our customers, they need to hit certain sustainability targets; our new non-PVC offering helps them to achieve this.”

“Soyang Europe supported us every step of the way in selecting the material and we are delighted with the result.”

The iDry body dryer

The iDry body dryer is a device that uses innovative technology to dry you before you leave the shower. By generating a warm and gentle flow of air, the dryer increases the rate of water evaporation from the skin, ensuring that the whole body is evenly dried in as little as two minutes.

The iDry body dryer gives its users increased self-sufficiency, allowing them to stay at home for longer as well as reducing demands on carers. The body dryer is also extremely economical to use, and more hygienic than towel drying.

The first body dryer was invented by our founder in 1991, but remains largely unknown to the public. As a company, we are on a mission to change that as we know just how beneficial this technology can be.

When we ask people in care what is important to them, we find that independence and dignity are very often cited as being vital for a feeling of self-worth and being able to live a more productive life. By enabling people to dry themselves autonomously, the iDry body dryer has great capacity to improve the lives of people usually reliant on care.

New generation Toto Cradle launched

Frontier Medical Group are proud to announce the arrival of Toto Cradle, an extension to our automated lateral turning system. The Toto Cradle addresses the issue of manual turning as part of a pressure area care plan.

The Toto Cradle Platform is the next generation of the Toto Lateral Turning System, which has been used in hospitals and healthcare settings since it launched in 2008.

Toto is an automatic lateral turning system designed to assist with patient turning. With a powered control unit and a turning platform fitted beneath a patient’s mattress, Toto automatically turns patients at user-defined intervals, relieving pressure over their most vulnerable areas.

Toto Cradle Platform has been specifically designed with the cradle support system, which reduces the risk of patient migration across the support surface while providing lateral turning.

Healthcare providers are required to turn patients frequently to reduce the risk of pressure ulcers but there are

a range of challenges when turning manually including resourcing, risk to patients and staff as well as lack of dignity for the patient. Manual turning on a 24-hour cycle can interrupt sleep patterns and be generally disruptive for patients and carers.

We recently showcased the product at the Occupational Therapy (OT) Show and exhibition at the NEC in Birmingham, where the feedback from healthcare professionals was overwhelmingly positive, with many commenting that they could see the benefits of the product in both hospital and care home settings.

The Toto Cradle Platform differs from the original Toto Lateral Turning System by providing a dual tilt to enhance patient comfort and support, effectively cradling the patient while providing consistent, prescribed lateral turning intervals.

More information about the Toto Cradle Platform can be found at: https://frontier-group.co.uk/ product/toto-cradle

Your step to freedom

It was the first time our team at Motorstep exhibited at the Birmingham NEC OT Show back in November 2023.

Showcasing a range of our Step Lifts, we didn’t quite know what to expect as previously our market was more for the Caravan and Motorhome industry.

We are very proud of our Motorsteps and have seen the difference they have made to our customers over the years. So with that in mind, we headed for 3 full days of lots of talking and demonstrations. What a great 3 days we had!

The feedback and overwhelming response the Motorstep lift received was just incredible. Speaking with the many OT’s that attended, some of which made a special trip to the OT show just to see the Motorstep in action, they all had the same thing to say…how it would instantly change the lives of the user and how they can remain independent in their own home without any costly adaptations or building work needed.

Through personal experience with step challenges, the Motorstep was created to help overcome these issues. Due to its innovative design, the motorised

step lift is completely portable, free standing and steadily raises the user to negotiate any step around the home that has become a challenge due to disability and mobility issues.

What the Occupational Therapists loved the most is how the step is ready to use straight from the box, sets up in seconds so their client doesn’t need to wait for costly building work to be completed.

With its simple push button operation, the Motorstep can lift to different heights allowing users to easily navigate steps or elevated areas without physical exertion.

160kg/25st. All Motorsteps are weatherproof for indoor and outdoor use.

Motorstep can help OT patients gain independence and confidence in their ability to move around their environment, ultimately improving their overall quality of life and to perform activities of daily living without the need for assistance.

We have different models available, lifting to 12, 24 or 32 inches. Powered by mains transformer or lithium ion battery with a capacity to lift up to

It was great fun to see the OT attendees enjoy testing the step lifts for themselves and to hear them say that it’s a great cost-effective way to change lives. This made the long 3 days worth it!

Roma Medical was one of our Top Exhibitors, with the innovative, Eliot Patient Chair range, which generated a lot of interest from across the industry.

Development of the range was inspired by the need to create a sustainable product that met the requirements of the patient, infection control, tissue viability and manual handling.

Each chair is upholstered with Vyflex® 4 way stretch upholstery with optional removable memory foam seat and concealed height adjustment as standard. For safe handling, ‘housekeeping’ wheels are standard across the range while the Flip Arm model enables side transfer and rapid evacuation in emergency situations such as cardiac arrest. The Eliot Plus features a depth adjustable seat for users with varying sized gluteal shelf and there’s even the dual-purpose Relative chair designed to fold into a couch for a companion staying alongside their loved one.

All four models: The Eliot Standard, Dynamic, Plus and Relative chairs were on display, with the Product Support team, happy to demonstrate the clinical and ergonomic advantages of each product.

With an eye on sustainability, this ‘Made in Britain’ supplier has gone to great lengths to implement its Net-Zero operations. The Eliot Patient Chair range is made using fully recyclable materials with modular components allowing healthcare end-users to fulfil their own in-house targets on Environmental Management Systems (EMS.)

Each model has been meticulously designed by the Roma Development Team, to bring comfort and flawless design features to healthcare settings

across the country. Available in four colours: Navy, Duck Egg Blue, Chablis and Hyacinth, the chairs will be loved by residents, patients, staff and family members alike.

With a focus on individual comfort and pressure area care, the adjustable seat height and seat depth allows users to enjoy optimised seating, whilst the flawless design is compatible with slings and stand aids.

Healthcare Matters was particularly impressed by the ergonomic back contour which enhances perfect head and neck position for optimal spinal alignment. With the standard memory foam seat pad and upholstered 4-way stretch Vyflex® covering, the height adjustable Eliot chair mitigates against the risks of pressure sores and caters for patients of all sizes.

The Eliot chair range is waterproof, stainproof and anti-microbial, making them easy to clean. A comprehensive maintenance package is available to help maximise service life and meet sustainability targets.

The Pharmacy Show 2023

The Pharmacy Show is the UK’s largest trade show for the primary care and community pharmacy sector. With over 300 exhibitors and a world-class education programme, the Pharmacy Show 2023 edition was buzzing with excitement from the 15th-16th October at the NEC in Birmingham. Every year, it’s the definitive calendar event for creative networking, showcasing new products and innovations and meeting new and existing customers across the industry.

The 2023 edition saw over 8,500 professional visitors, from pharmacy owners, wholesalers, buyers, traders, stake-holders, distributors and decisionmakers all under one roof for two days of dedicated trade conversations, education and sales. The event is uniquely designed, with theatres spaced directly across the show floor, to maximise the flow of visitors to exhibitors. 91% of visitors said they met

suppliers or learnt about products they would not normally have the time to meet with or learn about beforehand, demonstrating that this is the ideal opportunity to showcase new products to potential customers.

The show is widely regarded as bringing commonality of purpose and sharing a united pharmacy voice, across a fast-moving sector. It is the perfect place to carry out a ‘temperature check’ on what is happening across the industry and attracts distinguished keynote speakers.

The 2023 show, like the ones before was designed with dynamism in mind, with dedicated hands-on workshops live on the show floor and the opportunity to test and touch new products and solutions over the course of the two days.

The range of exhibitors was extensive and covered a myriad of products and solutions across the industry. Large household names such as Boots UK were in attendance, alongside big players like Aston University and the Shrewsbury & Telford Hospital University Trust, all the way through to independent hypoallergenic children’s bathing products such as Childs Farm. There were large scale pharmaceutical manufacturers, healthcare brands of all shapes and sizes and advocates and charities for community pharmacies across the UK.

With high demand for trainee pharmacies everywhere, there were training companies on hand to discuss level 2 and level 3 pharmacy apprenticeships. For existing pharmacies, one of the most popular topics was innovation in eCommerce from stock control to e-prescriptions and emergency

Prestige Diagnostics: In Vitro Diagnostic Medical Devices

Having attended DPC23 showcasing a wonderfully simple HbA1c point of care analyser, it really brought home to us the desire of people working on the front lines of primary care to be able to offer their patients timely information and diagnosis in an easy and straight forward manner.

Our background is in manufacturing IVD reagents and distributing laboratory equipment. Our MD and proprietor, who previously worked for some large diagnostic companies as an engineer, has a knack for spotting well designed machines, from talented manufactures. Since 2020, our business has expanded, including offering a suite POCT equipment from several well renowned and innovative IVD tech companies.

From the clinicians’ point of view, having a simple system using easy sampling methods that gives reliable results within minutes has huge advantages. Having the information at hand quickly, can help

them guide the patient towards the most appropriate care pathway very efficiently and improve early detection rates. It can also have the benefit of reducing unnecessary hospital admissions and even reduce overprescription of antibiotics.

From the patient’s perspective, getting results quickly from a ‘finger prick’ blood sample, is much less stressful, not to mention if the referral process is more direct, it will greatly improve their experience.

Naturally, when trying to introduce new platforms into the healthcare system, there are some obstacles, but with the increasing amount of

decentralised primary care settings there is an increasing opportunity to deliver testing widely that can really make a difference. As the mantra goes, it’s the right test, in the right place, at the right time.

People are also engaging more in their own wellbeing, if it’s easy, affordable, and accessible, there is huge potential to reduce preventative illness; the HbA1c test is the perfect example. Giving people knowledge, can empower them to make simple lifestyle changes that can reduce developing serious illness. This manifested itself amongst our own staff who, after taking the test, have largely had a significant reduction in their levels of HbA1c.

The vision is to give people the tools to seek the support and care pathways required. With advances in POCT technologies, we are now offering systems for haematology, biochemistry, CLIA, and PCR that provide simple, yet sophisticated (not to mention intelligent with the advances in AI), clinical diagnostic platforms that are not only up to the standards of laboratory testing but can be applied virtually anywhere.

Care & Retirement Living Show 2023

Care Show is the UK’s largest care event, providing training, solutions and networking opportunities to support those responsible for the care of others.

The Care Show unites the entire care sector together for an action-packed two-day event under one roof. From 11th-12th October 2023, more than 200 healthcare suppliers connected with over 4,000 attendees and over 170 expert keynote speakers to showcase the latest products, services and solutions from across the industry. The quality of the footfall was high, with many managers, owners and directors from care providers looking to connect with exhibitors.

Hot on the conference agenda were topics such as the future of the healthcare sector, international recruitment, through to person-centred care management and employee engagement apps. There were some highly emotive short film premieres and to keep things fresh, 76% of the

speakers were first-time speakers at any care sector event.

EF Training Founder and Director Jayne Ellis spoke passionately about how to recognise and respond to compassion fatigue across the sector, which resonated with many in the audience.

Exhibitors ranged from podiatry, adaptive hoists, care management software, recruitment, bookkeeping, immigration advice, through to charities like Marie Curie and Alzheimer’s Society and even an innovative live butterfly kit company for elders.

This was the largest edition by far and together with the launch of co-located event: Retirement Living Show, the event even had to be moved to a bigger hall to accommodate more exhibitors and visitors. The events were buzzing with the latest care technology innovations, care equipment, catering, design, through to raising finance, finding land, construction, architecture, affordable living and everything related to creating independent living for seniors.

The Care Show Thirty Under 30 initiative was unveiled, championing dedicated younger staff, with the overall winners receiving certificates.

Care Quality Commission (CQC) staff were on hand to deliver keynote speeches and visitors had the opportunity to meet inspectors one-toone to ask questions about the nature of inspections.

For those looking for a new Linkedin profile photo, there was an enterprising headshot photo corner, whilst the quiet and relax room and beer & bubbles bar and lounge gave some much-needed downtime.

The feedback from exhibitors and visitors was overwhelmingly positive, with plenty of networking, showcasing of new products and services and a chance to come together for the care sector during challenging times.

TAqua Safety Showers: Emergency Showers & Eye Wash Stations

he importance of workers safety on chemical sites cannot be overstated. These sites involve handling and processing hazardous materials that can pose serious risks to human health and safety. It is crucial to have proper safety measures. Safety showers are one such imperative measure for several reasons:

1) Immediate response to chemical exposure: Chemical accidents can cause injuries like burns, eye irritation, or chemical absorption through the skin. Safety showers provide workers with a quick and effective means of rinsing off the hazardous chemicals, reducing the chances of severe damage and minimizing the extent of the injury.

2) Preventing further spread and contamination: Following a chemical accident, it is crucial to contain the spill and prevent its spread to other areas or individuals. Safety showers help in limiting the extent of contamination by allowing workers to wash off the harmful substances before they have a chance to spread.

3) Emergency preparedness: Accidents can happen even with

proper safety procedures in place. Having safety showers readily available throughout the chemical site demonstrates a commitment to emergency preparedness.

4) Employee morale and well-being:

The presence of safety showers shows that employers prioritize the wellbeing and safety of their workforce. This commitment to worker safety enhances employee morale and creates a positive work environment.

In conclusion, safety showers are imperative on chemical sites due to their ability to provide immediate response to chemical exposure. Their presence is instrumental in minimizing the risks associated with working in chemical facilities, protecting workers from harm, and creating a safe and secure work environment.

Ensuring Safety in Hazardous Environments: ATEX Safety Showers

Introduction

In industries where flammable gases, vapours, and dusts are present, ensuring the safety of employees is of paramount importance. The European Union’s ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU, aim to regulate equipment used in potentially explosive atmospheres, requiring companies to implement safety measures that mitigate the risk of ignition and protect personnel.

Background

All chemical manufacturing facilities that handle or specialise in the production of volatile chemicals should adhere to ATEX regulations to protect employees from potential hazards. One of the key aspects of ATEX compliance is the provision of safety equipment, including safety showers and eye wash stations.

The Challenge and Solution

Compliance with ATEX Regulations: The company needs to comply with ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU, which requires the implementation of safety measures to prevent explosions in areas with potentially explosive

atmospheres. This includes providing ATEX-compliant safety showers.

Employee Safety: The safety of employees is a top priority. You need to ensure rapid and effective decontamination in case of chemical exposure.

Equipment Selection: Choosing the right ATEX-compliant equipment is essential. You must evaluate the specific requirements of your facility, including location, potential hazard levels, and the number of showers needed.

The solution

Get peace of mind knowing that safety showers from Aqua Safety Showers will be manufactured from corrosion resistant materials and come with a two-year warranty, further promoting a safety-conscious workplace culture.

New compact safety light barriers for the food processing industry

Schmersal has developed a new series of safety light barriers that are suitable for hygiene-sensitive applications in the packaging and food-processing industries, such as milk and meat processing. With a diameter of 62 mm and a height of 115 mm, the single-beam light barriers in the SLB series are extremely compact. This makes them ideal for thermoforming machinery for food packaging, for use on cutting equipment or on other machinery with narrow installation spaces.

SLB440 light barriers with IP69 degree of protection

SLB440 light barriers have been designed along the lines of the SLC/SLG440 IP69 safety light curtains and grids, which have been widely used in the food-processing and packaging industries for years. The new single-beam light barriers have been designed to cope with the high levels of stress placed upon them by the cleaning processes that are commonplace to these industries.

Thanks to a sophisticated, detailed design, the SLB440 series achieves IP69 degree of protection and is thus protected against ingress of water during close-range high-

pressure and high-temperature spray downs. This means that the external and internal seals on this contactless active protective device (AOPD) meet very strict requirements and are able to withstand frequent cleaning with alkali solutions, foam, hot steam or high-pressure jets.

Stainless steel locking caps – PC safety tubes

The new AOPD product line has also been created based on the principles of hygienic design. The locking caps on the SLB440 are made of stainless steel (V4A) as are the cable inlet, pressure equalisation diaphragm and fastening parts. Made of polycarbonate (PC), the transparent protective tubes not

only offer high resistance to cleaning agents, but also withstand strong mechanical loads. If spray lances should accidentally strike the SLC440 IP69’s enclosure during pressure washing in food production, the safety and protection function will continue to work thanks to the robust protective tubes.

The materials thus ensure higher process reliability as well as a lengthy safety light barrier service life. The independent testing laboratory Ecolab has also verified the high resistance of the materials used in these components.

Integrated evaluation

The AOPD series features integrated evaluation with two safety outputs that are connected directly to the higher-level control system. Additional features of this AOPD series are the integrated setup aid and straightforward connection option with M12 connector (4-pole or 5-pole). The SLB440 light barrier achieves Performance Level PLe, type 4.
