Treck to

o Oregon

Photography and story by Taylor DeHart

Tsedeq Baker Fullpipe Thruster

Have you ever surprised you’re friends? It’s a pretty fun, exciting feeling. My good friend Tsedeq was about to have his 22nd birthday when I got a message from his girlfriend Tori that she wanted to surprise him with a trip to Burnside with all his friends. So we kept it under wrap, got a crew together, met for a breakfast for Tsedeq’s bday and hit him with the surprise. Get in the car and go.

Our original plan was to make the 18 hour treck from FTC to Hood River, Oregon, but we caught wind of rain storms ruining the chances of skating in Oregon that day. So we shacked up in Boise, had an epic shitty breakfast at Denny’s and got hooked up with Blake to skate his super fun bowl. Thanks again Blake for the hospitality! We arrived in Hood River that night, met with Joey the Unheard rep and got a well needed nights sleep. Woke up with a fullpipe for breakfast.. a super weird one at that!

Only a short drive over the Columbia River from Hood River is the small little town of Bingen, Washington. Dreamland built 2 phases on this park making it a very fun park for everyone! Hood River has to be one of my all time favorites, there’s just something about flying through the trees, carving doors, snapping over bridges and water streams that puts a smile on my face. We made the drive to Portland that night only to be greeted by a handful of old FTC friends and a nice warm session at the New Adidas Village Private Park: a bunch of fun things set up in a parking garage will never fail! Thanks Kyle and Cory for hooking up the fun times!Â

The cold and wind wasn´t letting up so Nick Peterson got us into the Department of Skateboarding. Thanks Nick, this kid kills so be on the lookout for him in the new Bacon Video dropping soon! We woke up the next day to start the treck home, where it was negative 10 degrees and snowing. Made a mandatory stop at Multnomah Falls. Then it was onto our last skate destination in Irrigon, Oregon. We got to Irrigon, had a fun, warm session and then began the cold treck home. The #shittybreakfasttour was an example of how you can surprise your friend with something he will remember for the rest of his life. HUGE thanks to Tori for arranging this whole trip, driving, and dealing with all of us. And a Huge thanks to Blake, Joey, Nick, Cory, Kyle, Josh, Maddison, Mudgett, and anyone else who had to deal with us!

Denver Ba

Okay,

here’s what I think about backyarders, particularly in the Denver area.... First of all, the obvious advantage of backyarders is that they are a great escape from the crowded skateparks, no scooters to dodge and no random yoo-hoos beaming ya! Often they have more shade and tasty beverages to cool down or heat up the best of sessions. Secondly, places with alive and thriving backyarders often indicate skateboarding has a strong presence, which just so happens in this pocket of the central Rocky Mountains. Denver is fortunate like that.

And let’s not forget…variety! There’s pretty much every kind of backyarder represented: from perfect mini-ramps, frankenstein ramps, backyard pools, perfect bowls, teeny tight bowls, deep ’n’ steep bowls, dog bowls, to flow zones, etc etc ...and there’s always more in the works.

Someone once asked me, “there are so many perfect parks, why would anyone build their own here?” Well I didn’t know what to say, because as skateboarders, there’s never enough..is there? The thing about backyard bowls and ramps is that they are unique and a part of the person who created it. Sharing a backyard creation derived from individualism and heart is the absolute best feeling in skateboarding. I think we can all agree on that! Next time you are in a backyard skating someone’s ramp or bowl, be sure to give them a high five and thank you (and always bring beer)! Yeah!!

Johannes Haist is the dumbest, yet most impressive skateboarder I know. Seriously. I can’t think of anyone stupid enough to spend the entire summer travelling from contest to contest with me, but yet impressive enough to win every single one of them. And he did. This 18 year old from Karlsruhe, Germany had one helluva summer, and I witnessed a great majority of it. Despite his poor choice of travelling companionship, he actually is not lame. I couldn’t pay this guy to wear non-skater owned shoe brands, for example. He just likes skating and no bullshit. Rather rare for a guy his age with his abilities.

Interview by Lenore Sparks

LS: How come you didn’t call me back two days ago? That hurts. JH: When I was in Düsseldorf? Yeah, uh sorry man. I left my phone charger at home. We went there for skating but just drank so much beer. LS: Saufen! Geil! Does anyone call you “Yo-mamma’s” ….besides me just now? JH: no. fuck no. LS: Does everyone at your school know you are, like, sponsored? Do the chicks know? JH: No, I normally don’t talk much about skating in school. Skating sucks and everyone would laugh at me for it. LS: What is better, a pool or a DIY spot like 2er? JH: Well, I never really skated a legit backyard pool, but 2er and Kassel are insane skateparks for DIY.

LS: 2er or Kassel? JH: Kassel is better built and easier to ride but 2er is rough and varied which makes it really cool. Plus the culture in Hannover is amazing. The container houses around are so interesting, and the whole set up is great.

LS: If you could beat up anybody, EVER, in the history of mankind, who would it be? JH: I don’t know probably you, because you are so irritating right now. LS: What is your favorite color? Favorite Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream flavor? JH: Black of course. No wait oh shit! Violet kinda periwinkle like your lame-ass grip tape (me: I have unicorn grip tape, purple). Ben and Jerry’s? Those are not so readily available in Germany, but my favorite now is half baked because it is super good when your full baked. LS: Who are your sponsors? JH: Pavel and Concrete Waves LS: Who do you wish were your sponsors? JH: A beer company, but I don’t know which… Palmbräu? Augustiner is cool- but right now I am on a Weizen kick… Huber Weissen is sick right now. Someone who sponsors me money would be cool or an airline would be cool. Hot wheels too, why not?

LS: Any last words or shout-outs? JH: Thanks to Donald and Haiko from Pavel and Concrete waves, my father for always driving me around when I was young. Fabi and Gerd for photos.
