An event, which redefined the words ‘fashion’ and ‘art’with its showcase of diverse designers and artists.

Through a competitive platform this world class fashion show and art display raised the bar of creativity in the quaint island of New Providence to an international level.

Doongalik studios provided the perfect ambiance for the visual artist to display their awesome work of art and design. Fash|Art not only showcased fashion but presented opportunities for talented Bahamians to gain monetary grants as well as career launching incentives.

With the willingness to push the envelope its creative director, Kedar Clarke, fused the world of fashion and visual art and gave birth to Fash|Art. Fash|Art included a runway fashion show, cocktail lounge, trunk show and art exhibit, all created by

Bahamians with a contemporary and global flair. As Clarke says, “We’re on an island but we’re more than Androsia print and painting beach scenes. We have talents to rival anyone in the eastern or western hemisphere.”

“I was fortunate enough to play a role in coordinating one of the most acclaimed Islands of the World Fashion Week hosted here in the Bahamas. With this unforgettable and most rewarding experience I gained insight of the fashion world and was motivated to put my dreams into action. The overall experience along with my best friend Garvin Hall, who passed away just months before the event, inspired me to provide a similar opportunity to other talented Bahamian artists on a grand scale.”

CAIN CELEBRATION AT THE COVE

t

he world renowned nightlife extraordinaire, Jamie Mulholland celebrated the fourth anniversary of his adult exclusive venue, Cain at The Cove, Atlantis, Paradise Island.

The jet-set crowd from Miami, New York and the Bahamas partied away from day to night to the sounds of international DJs Cassidy, Stan Courtois and Frank Delour. Hampton’s upscale affairs met the Bahamas’ with over 1,000 VIP guests dancing wildy to the sounds of techno, funky house, pop, hip hop and reggae.

This anniversary celebration was a day of mixing and mingling of who’s who of the international party scene and local social elites. “KONK” - cONCH sALAD T

he fusion of exotic flavors bursting in your mouth creates a feeling of uncontrollable pleasure.

This enchanted sea creature defies the best in seafood cuisine.

A combination of herbs “sweet pepper, onions, cucumbers, tomatoes, lime and orange juice squeezed on top of the conch mixed with pineapple, iced with salted creates an “island in a spoon” flair to everyone that devours it.

Conch, (pronounced ‘KONK’) a native seafood delicacy is similar to the oysters and apart of the Mollusk Family. This natural aphrodisiac can be cooked in many different ways. The natives prepare this cuisine like sushi, steamed, chowdered, dried and jerked. A bowl of conch salad complimented with an ice cold beverage of choice is the true taste of paradise.

Ingredients: • 4 large conchs cut into ¼” cubes • ½ cup ¼” dice celery • ½ cup ¼” dice green pepper • ½ cup ¼” dice onion • 1 cup ¼” dice ripe tomatoes • 1/3 cup freshly squeezed lime juice • 1/3 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice • salt to taste • hot peppers (bird or goat) to taste Method: Wash the conchs in cold water, cut into cubes, place into a large serving bowl and sprinkle with the salt. Mix the lime and lemon juices together in a small dish. Crush the hot peppers into the juices; pour over the conch adding the diced vegetables and mix gently. Taste-test and adjust the seasonings. Spoon into salad cups or place on a bed of lettuce. Serve with a small dish of lime juice and crushed peppers on the side.

Serve in a bowl and enjoy!

THE ILLEST REGGAE BAND

I

t’s not just music, it’s a feeling. In 2008, beginning as a cover band, they gained notoriety for their soul filled renditions of many popular reggae songs, eventually writing original tracks of their own.

“My vocals are inspired by Jah so I sing what I feel”; no truer words could be spoken by Illest lead singer and founder Willis Knowles.

Coming from a family deeply rooted in music Willis found himself “needing” to sing. “The hunger to perform live, made me seek out other musicians to start a band…” says Willis.

Willis’ raspy vocals, eerily reminiscent of the late Bob Marley combined with Mandisa’s soulful voice accompanied by guitarists Ashley Algreen, Quinton Rahming and Nano Miramontes, drummer Tracy Knowles, keyboard player Terry Johnson and newest member Felipe Major, The Illest has taken the Nassau music scene by storm. The Illest works tirelessly to hone their craft, practice weekly and take musical cues from all genres of music blending them to create their unique sound.Together they promote the message of love and unity through their passion of music.

Having completed their debut album “The Illest”, and working on their sophomore album, fans of The Illest will have more than their fair fill of music from the collection. The passion for music is at the heart of these creative musicians, but they always remember that they must keep the fans first.

A

s the founder of the break-through music production company, ‘Make Em Listen,’ and online clothing boutique, ‘Cia’Monet,’ Patricia Chatti has redefined female entrepreneurship in the Bahamas.

For seventeen years Patricia enjoyed a life of great networking, entertainment and international exposure not knowing at the time that this invaluable experience would serve as the foundation of the career path to follow.

In 2003 while embracing motherhood, Patricia Chatti embarked the journey of returning home. For most the transition from city life back to island life would be dreaded, however she took this as a challenge to make her mark in the islands.

Accustomed to her international life of networking and entertainment.

Chatti was determined to create that same standard in the Bahamas. In the humble beginnings of Cia’Monet, Chatti worked out of her mother’s home, selling her collection of women apparel and accessories. Make ‘Em Listen, in 2006, began as a movement to provide a stage for musicians to share their talents and inspire a new generation of artists. “We will make Bahamians hear us. We will make them respect our sounds, music, art and style. Irrespective of genre, our music WILL be played on the radio and our artists WILL be engaged for live performances. We WILL sell albums. WE WILL PUSH FOR CHANGE.” Music engineer Ronald Sutherland. Chatti with her superb managing skills and unwavering determination assisted in the revolution of ‘Make ‘Em Listen.’ Over the past five years this movement has grown from karaoke night appearances to sell out concerts and has gained international exposure.

Beyond her entrepreneurial spirit, unmatched creativity and unmistakable drive, her heart to be an activist of change and philanthropist is undeniable. Patricia Chatti is a descendant of Cat Island, where her grandmother currently resides as the oldest member of the Arthur Town settlement. “When I went to a family reunion earlier this year I was fired up to breathe life into what I saw as a skeleton of an island overlooked by lawmakers and Patricia Chatti (Photo By: Bahama Tourist) this was BEFORE the hurricane,” Chatti said. In the summer of 2011, Cat Island was ravaged by Hurricane Irene leaving many homeless and in need of assistance. Cat Island, like many of the outer Islands of The Bahamas took the brunt of Irene’s fury and was left decimated. A local school teacher told of Arthur’s Town High School being left in shambles and teachers and students without proper bathroom facilities.

With assured support by veteran Bahamian entertainer KB, Chatti spurred into action and planned a Hurricane Relief Concert and Fun Day to raise awareness of the island’s devastation and need of help. The Minister of Youth and Culture, Hon. Charles Maynard provided governmental approval and support. In her selfless efforts, Patricia Chatti secured over twenty-six sponsors, twenty-eight artists and two bands for the event. Support poured in from a plethora of local artists such as Ronnie Butler, KB, Terez Hepburn, Sammi Starr, Willis & The Illest, Ancient Man, Novie Pierre, Papa Smurff, Peter Runks, Julien, Makarios Smith, Blitz King, Mario O, Richa Sands, Raquel Oliver, Bigga Tea, Sasha Dunn, Geno D, Det Angel, Amon Billz, Sheena D, Jitana and Ovadosa.

Along with family oriented activities, ‘Getting Cat Island Back on Track,’ Hurricane Relief Concert was an evening of love, support and unity.

This woman of metro-elasticity has proven to be a gem within the Bahamian society. Patricia Chatti continuously proves that anything is attainable once you’re willing to work! She has eluded all labels and has exceeded local expectations and it is only the beginning for this la femme extraordinaire.

hOW TO GET AROUND

G

etting around is easy as eating an apple pie. There are many ways of transportation in Nassau, Bahamas. Bus, rental cars, motor scooters, and taxis are the most common means of public transportation.

By Bus (Jitney)

By Rental Car

The buses (also called jitneys) are generally 32-seaters and travel to many parts of the island. They operate from 6:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. daily, except on Sundays when there is reduced service. The fare ranges from $1.25 per person to $3.50 for out-of-town zones.

Exact fare is required. Check with your hotel’s bell desk for bus routes.

Many travelers don’t really need to rent a car in The Bahamas, especially those who are coming for a few days of soaking in the sun at their resort’s own beach. In Nassau, you can easily rely on public transportation or taxis. Most visitors need transportation only from the airport to their hotel; island tours can be arranged later, and an expensive private car won’t always be necessary. Your hotel can readily arrange for taxi service if you want to venture out.

That said, you may decide that you want a car to explore beyond the tourist areas of New Providence Island.

By Taxi Once you’ve reached your destination, you’ll find that taxis are plentiful in the Nassau/Cable Beach/Paradise Island area. These cabs, for the most part, are metered -- but they take cash only, no credit cards.

Taxis are usually shared, often with the local residents. Out Island taxis aren’t metered, so you must negotiate the fare before you get in. (Expect to pay a rate of around US$20 per hour.) Cars are often old and badly maintained, so be prepared for a bumpy ride over some rough roads if you’ve selected a particularly remote hotel.

i need a vacation...

8:00 AM Traffic this morning is the worst ever! The highway is blocked up for miles, and the combination of low black smog along with cold grey skies absolutely depresses me. I’m crawling at inches per hour to reach an office that’s 65 miles away! This is impossible...

9:45 AM So now I’m sitting at my desk, and I can actually see my boss’ tonsils as he shouts down at me. I can feel the cool spray of his saliva like raindrops pelting my face… I’ll wait till he’s done before I wipe it away.

12:15 PM The espresso machine has apparently decided to stop working, and my 7’oclock cup is starting to wear off. My fingers are getting heavier and so are my eyelids. And now I’m typing emails that look something like thisssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss…

2:00 PM I’m staring at my watch; are those hands even moving? It’s like I’m stuck in some Twilight Work Zone where time has no meaning!

So I seek more work just to keep my mind from drifting, and at the same time trying to show my boss that I’m still worth keeping.

5:45 PM Figure I’d stay late to make up for this morning; smiling as everyone leaves for their nice comfortable homes. Only an hour to go before I’m finally home free, sure hope the boss notices my desk before he ups and leaves. But my enthusiasm wanes as I realize he’s already gone. Now it’s just me here, desperately wishing I was home.

7:00 PM I’m finally out the door and heading toward my car. But this joy is quickly fleeting as I realize I won’t be home for an hour.

And as I get onto the highway I set in for the long journey home.

I relax, sit back and then realize I didn’t set the office alarm…

7:38 PM Evening is setting in and I’m loosing light as well as patience. I could shoot myself in the foot for having to come back to this place! Repetition when you’re rushing is the worst feeling in the world! I could have been halfway home by now but instead I’m only starting! Again…

9:05 PM My key is finally turning the lock to the door of my precious home. I fall onto the sofa and can instantly feel consciousness evaporating out of me. I say to myself I’ll rest here for a while, but before I can finish my thought I’m already in dreamland….

In the blink of an eye I’m somewhere totally foreign: A place I somehow recognize even though I’ve never been there. It’s a mystery where I’m at, but yet I feel as if I belong; as if my very being was designed to exist in this place...

As my senses come to me I realize I’m feeling multiple sensations. My forehead is being bathed in the intense warmth of a midday sun, while my body is messaged with the gentle rub of rocking waves. My ears hear the sound of tree barks gently whispering their groans to the waves who carry their melody in rhythmic motion: Completely unpredictable but entirely in harmony. I gently rock to this dance of effortless relaxation. Heat and cool warmth infuse my pours…

I dig into the bright white texture that is beneath me: Billions of wet miniscule pebbles that slip through my toes. They massage the tops of my feet with their wet coarse rub. I close my eyes for a time and I experience an eternity. Stillness in the motion of this dance of effortless relaxation…

I must have died and gone straight to heaven.

It has to be heaven because it’s certainly not earth… Because nowhere on earth are the skies so bright blue, and the trees ever so lush green; No where on earth do the sands glow bright and the ocean clear as crystal like a pool made for kings…

What possible place on the earth could this be?

It’s impossible to describe with words the magnitude of what I’m feeling. It’s as if the human body was perfectly made to absorb the essence of this place.

I can smell it, and taste it, and feel it all around me; Paradise is not just a place but a thing that infuses me.

The blue sky is now fading and I feel I’m being pulled away, I can feel myself awakening but I so desperately want to stay. For a brief second I crack open an eye just to catch a glimpse of the time, and to my horror I see the daylight outside and realized I’m late for work again….

Club Waterloo Nassau’s most venerated nightspot has been in operation for close to 30 years. The secret to their success is probably the variety.

There are several distinct spaces, including a sports bar, disco and a patio bar. Music varies, from lite rock to reggae to European electronica, with the occasional live performance thrown in for good measure. This past Labor Day held a different quest for me outside of the usual beach picnicking, reading or liaising on the computer: I wanted Greek!

I spotted the Olive’s Meze Grill and quickly scanned their menu posted outside their glass windows. It had a great selection of Panini’s, burgers and appetizers and met my quest for Greek. The table was dressed with 2 wine glasses, cloth napkins and wrapped eating utensils. The napkin rings bore the restaurant’s name and is a great way to remind persons of their brand.

We were seated quickly with a hearty smile and an entertaining server who never missed a beat! The restaurant featured various lighting throughout and the bar had copper outskirts gave it a unique look and shine.

At Olives, I found an ambiance of tranquility and a mini escape from the outside Enjoying Lunch at Olive’s (Photo Courtesy Of: Olive’s Meze Grill ) world. I felt relaxed and found myself talking and laughing for hours as I got lost in the solace that it gave from the everyday life.

Located in the Cable Beach Plaza, their lunch menu ranges from $8.95 - $15.95 for salads, Panini’s and burgers offering fish, chicken, beef and vegetarian options which can satisfy every palette.

Relaxing breeze, awe inspiring view and a quaint dining table can be found at Ichiban restaurant found on West Bay St. Providing its guests with the beautiful scene of white sand and daily cruise ships, Ichiban (meaning One or First in Japanese) delivers Far Eastern and Bahamian cuisine for lunch and dinner.

As a surprise, my eyes were revealed to the softly lit dining area and I was greeted by a friendly waiter who was more than happy to serve us.

BNT Wine & Art Festival

F

or the past 20 years the Bahamas National Trust has hosted the extravagant, immaculate Wine and Arts Festival in its lush tropical garden and this year was no different. On Saturday, the 29th of October more than 50 talented artists and over 50 wine selections sponsored by Bristol Wines and Spirits were featured including a food and wine pairing which was a new addition this year by the Ministry of Tourism Culinary Division.

A satisfying variety of vendors, wine experts and culinary professionals nestled among flora and fauna was the scene as guests from all walks of life strolled through the gates, navigating the tree lined pathways swayed to the sounds of local music dancing in the fresh Bahamian summer air. Amidst the chirping of indigenous wildlife to the chattering of guests catching up, the crowd of festival goers seemed unaffected to the scorching sun as more people piled in, wine glasses in hand, viewing the many paintings on display. Thrown into the mix, out of Cuba was Orlando of Guevara La Revolucion who started coming to the festival last year. Guests and cigar lovers all stopped by to watch him skillfully roll his handmade Cuban cigars.

Wine Manager for Bristol Wine and Spirits, Rusty Scates, stated that the Wine and Arts Festival was a great opportunity for the company to introduce the public to new wines that they will be offering during the holiday season.

This year festival attendees had the opportunity to sample Asti Winery’s Cellar 8 range of wines featuring the Chardonnay and Zinfandel. They also had a chance to taste Pine and Post Wines from Washington State featuring Riesling and Merlot and Flip Flop Wines from California offering their Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Wine and Arts Festival also showcased a special guest this year from Trivento Winery in Argentina.

I had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Julian Inarra Iraegui, Export Manager of Trivento Winery, who mentioned that it was the company’s second year appearing at the festival. He went on to discuss that they were offering the patrons in attendance a tasting of five dry wine and one sweet and the latter being most popular in the Bahamian market.

When asked what his overall thoughts were on BNT Wine and Arts Festival, Mr. Iraegui commented that it was one of the most important festivals in all of the Caribbean in terms of Branding, only third to Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. He looks forward to coming again next year and is wowed by BNTs good organization and very well done efforts and display by Bristol Wines and Spirits.

A trio in attendance, Akeyra Saunders, Aciel and Tara Stuart who were still working their way around the event from the start thought everything was breathtaking. Aciel made it clear that even though it’s his wife’s type of affair because it is a relaxing social event, he especially comes for the wine and love the wide range of selection.

First timer Akeyra expressed that she has always wanted to experience the festival and is amazed by the paintings and artwork. Also experiencing a great first time impression was Odetta Grant who stated that she was really enjoying the wine, loving the food and variety of talented artists, she’s already looking forward to next year’s event.

Not to be outdone by the wine selection, also featured were a number of local culinary experts, offering recipes with all ingredients grown locally. Newcomer to the Wine and Arts Festival, Alexandra Maillis Lynch of Alexandra’s Catering and August Moon, guided August Moon Cafe (Photo Courtesy Of: Bahamas National Trust) attendees through the process of Roasting a Pig in Plantain Leaf. Speaking with Ms. Lynch, she expressed what a great day it was for her company in terms of not only publicity but also the social experience. She has much appreciation for the event and the tremendous amount of feedback she received and will definitely be doing it again. Also among the well known caterer’s and restaurants providing food throughout the day were Knofetti Kreations, Glorious Foods, Citrus Catering and a special booth featuring HaagenDaz ice cream which I’m certain was a treat to families in attendance as much as it was to me. Not to be excluded was Gourmet Markets and Food Art by Cacique who’s Lobster Fritters I especially enjoyed.

Yes, while the wine and spirits were liquid gold to wine lovers and the food very savory to the pallets that welcomed them, it was very clear that the highlight of the day was the artwork. Deputy Executive Director of the BNT, Lyn Gape expressed how they were once again thrilled to have so many outstanding artists in the festival. Anyone looking to see a variety of captivating artistic styles, this festival is the place to be.

They told stories of little braided schoolgirls at play, fishermen casting nets to cracking conch shells, and local political icons jumping of canvas’ all but a tent away.

Pinks, blues, greens, yellows all marry each other to create scenes of nature common to the Bahamian environment. Many veteran artists from around the island showcased their work. Mr. Malcolm Rae, a painter and owner of Stingrae Studio recalls when he first started coming to the festival over 20 years ago he was one of about 20 artists on display, now there’s more than 50. He expressed that not only was it an opportunity to display his work which he is proud of Peter Otim Angole (Photo Courtesy Of: but it’s also a marvelous atmosphere Bahamas National Trust) to catch up with passersby whom he haven’t seen in a while. Amongst those painters that have put in many years at the festival are Moya Strachan and Nicole Angelica, on their eighth year in attendance. They expressed that it was always very successful for them, selling out half way through the event, and having the chance to network with fellow artists. Nonetheless, Moya also makes it a point to enjoy the festivities, sometimes a little too much she joked.

The evening leaves behind a kaleidoscope of colors offered to the hundreds of wine and art lovers in attendance by those many extremely creative and talented artists that gifted them to us. It is safe to say that most of us, with painting underarm, wine glass in one hand while wiping sweat from our brow with the other hand, have already picked our favorites of the day and have prepared in our minds to follow them again next year into the green of the towering palm trees, through the shade of the banana leaves and under the tents of the Bahamas National Trust, Wine and Art Festival. Whether you’re local, foreign resident or tourist, mark it on your calendar as one of the best ways to enjoy a Saturday in paradise!

150th anniversary

D

uring the month of November, Parliament Square was transformed into a walk down memory lane.

In celebration of the city’s 150th anniversary and the establishment of the Anglican Diocese of the Bahamas & Turks and Caicos Island, a fine selection of photographs and articles adorned the square, providing all visitors of the downtown area a glimpse of Nassau’s rich history.

Through congratulatory remarks by The Governor General His Excellency Sir Arthur Foulkes, The Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Hubert Ingraham, The Bishop of the Dioceses of the Bahamas & the Turks and Caicos Island the Rt. Rev’s Laish Z. Boyd and other notable Bahamians expressed their appreciation for the Anglican Diocese & Turks and Caicos Island’s involvement in the growth and progress of the city of Nassau. The Anglican Diocese of the Bahamas was recognized for its continuous efforts of social outreach, educational institutions and other programs that encourage spiritual and holistic development of all citizens of the Bahamas.

November 4th 2011, members of the Anglican Diocese of the Bahamas & Turks and Caicos Island, other religious figures, politicians, dignitaries and prominent members of civil society were all in attendance at a mass of thanksgiving at Christ Church Cathedral. Following the mass a procession to Rawson Square was led by Bishop Laish Z. Boyd to bless the city. “The anniversary is a time for residents to reflect on how far the city has come, We want to take this time to thank God for its growth and development, ” said Archdeacon Cartwright.

The festivities along Bay Street continued Sunday November 13th 2011, when the members of all service organizations gathered in celebration of Remembrance Day. With these prominent members and civil servants of every age marching together in love, unity and service it was a beautiful scene of the city of Nassau’s past, present and future.

‘Islanticity’ By Aqueelah

P

laiting is rooted in Bahamian Culture having been practiced here for hundreds of years. The making of baskets, clothing and head coverings out of natural materials was one of the first survival skills learned by early man. Plaiting is still practiced today but, in the hands of skilled Bahamian ladies, the ancient craft has evolved into an art form.

The Bahama Tourist team sat down with Aqueelah Thompson, the fashion-forward and edgy designer whose brand ‘Islanticity,’ is buzzing locally and internationally with her chic and classy hand-made accessories

How did you get interested in starting your own business, specifically in the straw industry?

From the age of twelve, I’ve been learning different methods to create straw work. I spent most of my Aqueelah Thompson (Photo Courtesy Of: Islanticity) summers in Long Island and straw was all we did for fun. My mom noticed it was something my sister and I loved doing and she invested in a machine and a large amount of straw plaits that we could use to make these bags.

Over the years creating bags, hats and other accessories was just something I did and loved to do. I just love the idea of expression through arts and craft and the opportunity to create something different every time.

When I returned from college and with the job market not offering many options I decided to start my own business. When making the decision of which business to venture in, it was quite clear to do straw work, because it was something I loved to do and I could get paid for doing it.

Where do you see you see yourself and your business in ten years?

In ten years I expect ‘Islanticity’ to be internationally known with a full staff to meet the demands of every client. Continue to grow in exposure, creativity and artistic skills. Definitely featured in magazines like Bahama Tourist, fashion shows and many other marketing opportunities.

What color would you describe yourself and why?

Yellow! Bright, exciting and energetic and I think it’s a good way to describe my art pieces as well.

What are some of your inspirations for your designs?

What would you tell someone interested in starting their own business?

I am inspired by many things. Overall the various straw pieces created are inspired by the idea to be bold, different, and fashionable. My target market is more of the young ladies and the young at heart, who appreciate the craft and desire to accessorize with it in their day to day lives. I am inspired by where my clients are going, whether it’s a party, a pageant, a formal occasion, school or work I want to offer them creative options to fit their needs.

In life you will never be successful if you are afraid of failure! I didn’t plan to start a straw business when I had first put my straw pictures on the popular social networking website, Facebook a year ago. There is no problems when you find something your passionate about that allows you to showcase your talents, in turn for your awesome work, you will find that people would always be interested in buying!

As the straw industry pays homage to designers like Harl Taylor and embraces new talents, how do you set your creations apart?

No two designs are alike! I try not to make replicas of my designs unless someone wishes to have one made. My designs are unique and different from anything out there; from the sand, the shells and beads that I use. I consistently dare myself to be different, to try different things, to do something that hasn’t been done as yet

I

t was almost eight years ago one beautiful sunny morning that I spontaneously decided to take up kayaking as a cross-training sport to compliment my cycling. I was lured by the romance of it----man and nature in perfect harmony.

It is a decision that has completely enhanced my quality of life----physically, mentally and spiritually. Never could I have imagined the peace I found by being close to nature in a relatively simple craft powered by myself.

My first craft was a 17 footer fiberglass sea touring kayak from Seattle, Washington. Eventually all other forms of sporting activity were completely abandoned in favour of kayaking! If you ever get the chance to stay in the Bahamas or be fortunate enough to actually live here; one thing for certain is that you will know how breathtakingly beautiful the waters are that surround these 700 Islands and cays.

Gliding along in a beautiful sleek kayak on the ocean was a dream come true. Other than snorkeling, kayaking is without a doubt the best way to be up, close and personal with the natural beauty of our seas and the ecosystem.

The Bahamas and kayaking is a natural fit as is skiing at Aspen as the weather is near perfect year round for most paddling activities.

However, one must pay more attention to the weather reports during the active tropical storm season from June to October each year.

Before you venture into the sport of kayaking, it is essential to learn the basics of kayaking from a qualified instructor. This might be difficult to find in the City of Nassau area but there are a few outfitters located in the Exuma chain of islands. If not available, I recommend purchasing a few of the many “How to Kayak” DVD’s available online. Always wear a personal flotation device (PFD), carry other safety gear and never paddle alone if possible.

Protective gear should also include a good sunscreen lotion, baseball cap or wide brim hat and suitable swimwear.

While kayaking you should never let the beauty of the waters of the Bahamas distract you from being aware of your surroundings. Mother Nature can be very fickle at times. In a few hours or just minutes the weather can change very drastically from bright and sunny to stormy and windy. Before each paddling session I usually call 915 to get the local weather report. This useful tool also advises you of the low and high tide times.

Knowing where to paddle around the island of New Providence is crucial to your safe enjoyment of the sport. Most of the hotels and resorts will have the recreational kayaks available for their guests where they can safely paddle within the immediate beach area of the resort. Most of my paddling sessions are launched not too far from my home base at Culbert’s Bay at the eastern southern point of New Providence, near the popular Yamacraw Beach. From Yamacraw Beach along the southern coastline of the island is perfect for kayaking. You will be able to paddle pass the scenic gated communities of Port New Providence, Palm Bay and Treasure Cove. Locally this relatively shallow coastline is known as “the flats”; stretching from Yamacraw Beach all the way to historic Adelaide Beach, near the famous Albany development.

There are other popular kayak launch sites from beaches such as Montagu Beach in the east, Saunders Beach on the north coast and Goodman’s Bay on the Cable Beach strip. Being the most populated island, New Providence’s coastal areas can be very hectic at times.

Beware of the many motorized boating vehicles and other traffic on the water in general. Usually I find that setting out for a paddling session is best in the early morning hours or late evening.

Kayaking may prove to be so much fun you may even forget how much your fitness level is improving. When done properly, the sport kayaking provides an excellent upper body workout. Furthermore, with good torso rotation and technique the legs are also involved. It all depends on what you particularly want to gain out of your paddling session and how you choose to fit it into your fitness routine. Some days I kayak for short intense sessions where I work on my sprints. Other days might be a long leisurely paddle session where it’s more nature loving, sight-seeing and meditative.

When kayaking throughout the Bahamas, every paddle session is an opportunity for a new adventure.

There were moments when the calm aquamarine waters turned grey and rowdy and I had to be skilled enough to navigate back to home base safely. There are moments when being one with nature brings on a whole new meaning not quite expected; like when a flock of laughing seagulls mischievously decided to splatter their droppings all over my kayak deck. Other times I have had tarpons and sting rays jump out of the water directly towards my kayak!

I have had some even truly magical experiences that I can only describe as a gift from the Divine. One very special encounter was with a mother dolphin and her calf swimming underneath my boat. This encounter was no more than 200 yards from shore.

Intense fear gripped me at first with thoughts of a very large shark about to attack. The fear quickly changed to complete awe when I saw both dolphins gracefully jumping out of the water just a few feet from the bow of my kayak. It was truly one of my most magical kayaking experiences to date.

So drag that kayak to the water’s edge and set off for your own personal sea adventure.

BLUE LAGOON ISLAND Take a day to escape the crowds and enjoy the sand, sun, and water of Blue Lagoon Island. This pristine island away from the crowds has everything you need to forget the hustle and bustle of the world and to relax with family and friends.

BLACKBEARD & STINGRAY ISLAND Swim among the gentle stingrays in the private waters along Blackbeard Cay. This quiet island offers a beautiful beach with lounge chairs, volleyball and basketball courts, and a bar and grill, and it’s surrounded by water perfect for snorkeling and swimming.

Blue Lagoon Island, located three miles from Nassau, Bahamas, is a private island. Centuries ago, the island was a salt marsh that attracted pirates and privateers. They would cull the salt from the lagoon and use it to preserve their food. They would also use the island as a rest stop while waiting for permission to proceed to Nassau Harbor. In the early 1900s, the salt marsh was dredged, palm trees were planted, and the island became a paradise garden. hether you want to soak up some sun while roaming Bay Street that is lined with luxury stores or take your pick of high-end boutiques while wandering the cobble stone pathway of Marina Village, Nassau and Paradise Island provides everything you need and desire in retail therapy.

When you’ve had enough sun, slip into the cool air of your hotel. They too won’t disappoint, offering more than their share in designer boutiques from clothing to jewelry. Whether cash or charge, you can shop until sundown for high end luxuries, clothing, jewelry, watches, perfume, keep sakes, you name it! It’s also worth knowing that shopping here is duty free! You can get many items here at almost half the price than you’ll get it for in the U.S especially on watches, jewelry and perfume.

Bay Street in Nassau, with its historic architecture and old century buildings, boasts a wide variety of shops to feed every taste, styles and interests. Downtown is also famous for Bahamian crafts. However, if you’re looking for resort wear and jewelry, you may want to say hello to designer boutiques such a Versace, Fendi, Cartier and Gucci just to name a few. Bay Street and Marina Village also feature local artisans selling their hand-made wares like straw bags and hats, wood carvings, jewelry, souvenirs & gift items, t-shirts and much more. So if you want to take home a piece to gift to a friend or simply remember your trip, stop in at The Plait Lady for a hand crafted straw item. Don’t forget to visit the Straw Market or Festival Place for keepsakes that bring the culture, beauty and rhythm of the island together in your favorite piece. There you get to use your bargaining skills and being a tourist may just well work in your favor!

You’re probably wondering how you will ever cover all of these wonderful stores during your short stay. Well no worries! Bay Street is easily accessible by cab, jitney (local bus), or simple walk if you’re staying in a downtown hotel or on a cruise ship. If you’re in the Cable Beach or Paradise Island location, the jitney will take you downtown, Bay Street for $1.50. So grab your flip-flops and pocket book and stroll on out for some retail fun in the sun. Don’t forget your straw hat, it’s hot out!
