elcome to this year’s British Academy Television Craft Awards, our annual celebration of the very best practitioners working in television. This evening we celebrate a group of exceptionally talented nominees, so my congratulations to you all. This is your night, so enjoy every moment! Our nominees raise the bar for fellow practitioners and help inspire new talent to achieve, and the sheer quality of this year’s nominations allows us to showcase another incredible year in British television. This year’s Special Award goes to the brilliant Hilary Briegel. A vision mixer for more than 30 years, Hilary has worked on a number of BAFTA-recognised productions, from such classic British sitcoms as Absolutely Fabulous to live events broadcast across the world, including the Olympic Games and the Royal Wedding in 2011. I’m delighted we are recognising Hilary’s incredible achievements. My sincere thanks to the Television Committee, led by Andrew Newman and Jane Lush; to the juries; the BAFTA team, in particular Siobhan Pridgeon, Kelly Smith and Clare Brown; our wonderful host, Stephen Mangan; and all our partners who support us and believe in what we do. ongratulations to all of this evening’s nominees, whose tireless work behind the scenes makes our favourite television shows a reality. The exceptional men and women nominated tonight are sometimes the unsung heroes of this collaborative artform, but the Television Craft Awards provides a unique opportunity to single out their remarkable achievements. Highlighting the extraordinary range of skills that go into creating television serves as an inspiration for those seeking a career in the industry. The Awards provide a strong incentive to progress and succeed, but BAFTA also runs a wide range of learning events and activities designed to support, nurture and develop new and emerging talent. Our year-round programme includes masterclasses, scholarships, lectures, an online learning channel, BAFTA Guru, and much more. This past year has seen the launch of our new A Life in Television strand, which to date has featured Michael Palin and Julie Walters. Our professional development network, BAFTA Crew, has gone from strength to strength, with more than 200 of the brightest below-the-line crew talents recruited in 2014. Yesterday, Generation Next offered a day of activities for those serious about a career in the industry. And our flagship emerging talent scheme, Breakthrough Brits, entered its third successive year with an open call for nominations on 1 April – if you know someone who is deserving of entry, please do let us know. This year’s Special Award recipient started her working life as a production secretary on schools radio in the early 1970s, but soon discovered a true passion for vision mixing. With a remarkably varied portfolio, spanning decades, Hilary Briegel is a shining light in her craft. words by rich matthews | portrait by ian derry

’m not used to talking,” laughs Hilary Briegel. “When things are going well, a vision mixer doesn’t say anything.” If anyone can live up to the cliché of letting her credits do the talking, it’s the prolific Briegel. Sitcoms from The Young Ones to Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps; events from Trooping the Colour to Children in Need; light entertainment stalwarts, such as Top of the Pops and Top Gear; operas, ballets and classical music concerts; the Olympics, the Grand National and Match of the Day; Newsnight, Panorama and Tomorrow’s World; even Roland Rat and Blue Peter – the list goes on (see box out for more). Even Briegel has difficulty remembering everything… “I had to do a CV, but I haven’t done one since 1993,” she says. “So my table is covered with all my past diaries. I’ve been so lucky and privileged to work on the range of programmes I have. I love different genres,

and having the good fortune to work on so many different types of show has been amazing.” Vision mixers are the unsung heroes of television, the heartbeat of both live broadcasts and recorded studio programmes, and Briegel is excited that any vision mixer is being acknowledged with an award. “All vision mixers have to be in tune with the cameras, listen to the director and interpret their vision of the show,” she says. “You look at shows now like Strictly [Come Dancing] and The X Factor, and they’re beautifully cut. So this is recognition of the work that all vision mixers do, not only live but also recorded. If the vision mixer makes a mistake the timing is ruined. I feel extremely honoured, very humbled and quite frankly astonished. I think it’s the first time that our craft has been included in BAFTA.” 17

So, what makes a good vision mixer? “Concentration. And to be calm before transmission, even if the running order changes or cameras go down. Be a good team member – have a good sense of humour and have fun because that creates a relaxed atmosphere. The relationship between the director, the script supervisor, the cameras and the vision mixer is very important. Be knowledgeable about lighting and sound. When I come to a programme, I’m a new pair of eyes; I like to think about what the viewer wants to see. And knowing when not to cut is just as important, when to hold your nerve.” For someone who has worked on such a huge range of shows, Breigel doesn’t pause for thought when asked for a career highlight. “The marriage of His Royal Highness Prince William to Catherine Middleton in April 2011,” she states. “I felt incredibly honoured and humbled to be asked to work on that show. It wasn’t until we were watching the coverage in the pub that we collectively said, ‘Did we just do that?’ I went over the vows in my head the night before, memorising them, because they were cut quite quickly.” And she hasn’t lost any of her enthusiasm for her craft when asked what she’s looking forward to in her career. “I’m working on the General Election next,” Briegel says, who has been working on these since 1979. She enthusiastically adds: “I’m very aware of how long I spend on each candidate on that one, so I don’t give any bias. I try to maintain a rhythm where each speaker gets an equal amount of airtime.” Maybe we will all watch the election coverage with fresh eyes this time.

One of the main reasons we are so proud to be sponsoring the Breakthrough Talent category of the Awards is that inspiring and encouraging young people to pursue a career in television craft is vital to the continuing success of the industry. Television craft is a predominately freelance-based part of the industry, and can seem very unstructured and inaccessible, particularly to those from non-traditional backgrounds. As a charity, BAFTA does so much to inspire the next generation of talent: scholarships, BAFTA Guru, BAFTA Crew and Breakthrough Brits to name just a few of the many initiatives that provide information and support. Many of the individuals nominated tonight are also incredibly generous in sharing their knowledge and experience with those at the start of their careers, and at Sara Putt Associates we also aim to encourage those entering the industry through our own in-house trainee scheme.
