President of the Academy

WELCOME In what has been such a difficult year for so many – across our industries, at home in the UK and in the wider world – it’s such a joy to be able to play host to a celebration of the remarkable. To win a BAFTA is always a mark of excellence, but to be nominated in a year like no other, where uncertainty has reigned, is a testament to the talent, creativity and perseverance of our industry. We congratulate all of this evening’s nominees: they are the very best at what they do. Our Awards remain a unique celebration of all that’s good, moving, provocative and powerful about television, championing talent both in front of and behind the camera. Covid-19 has created many challenges for the television industry. Productions have undergone multiple stop-starts; cast and crew have had to find new ways of working together, with pre-production often including periods of self-isolation; technology has been both a saviour and a hindrance, when it breaks down; and travel, at home and overseas, has been halted, all impacting on the creative process. Much of our industry is made up of freelancers, too, and job security, as well as finances, have been a huge cause for concern. And yet, as the nominations highlight, the industry has shown incredible resilience and resistance, pulling together like

never before, to produce stunning works. As we move towards a more open world, we are optimistic about the future. BAFTA has faced its own challenges during this time. With the generosity and support of our members, our partners, sponsors and donors, the wider industry and our tireless staff, we have continued to deliver spectacular content and vital initiatives under extraordinary circumstances. We invite you to visit our website and follow our social media to stay informed on all that we do to shine a light on the very best talent and creative endeavours in the screen arts. We are moving into a new era at BAFTA, as we head towards our 75th year in 2022, and we hope you will join us on this exciting journey. We wish you all a wonderful evening and every success for the rest of the year.

MEET THE SPONSORS MAD DOG 2020 CASTING OFFICIAL TV CRAFT PARTNER

In an unusual year for the filming industry, Mad Dog 2020 Casting has experienced first-hand how the pandemic has transformed television production. The pandemic has taught us that we can work miles apart, from home, and still maintain our high standards of supplying supporting artists for incredible productions. Our staff have developed stronger relationships with each other, and we have held more team days, virtual meetings and quizzes than we can count. When the world stayed home, Mad Dog 2020 Casting used this time to reach out to our supporting artists. We held one-to-one video calls, giving artists guidance and offering a friendly face to talk to at a time when productions came to a halt and the future seemed uncertain. Artists have used technology to their advantage and found creative ways to film self-tapes at home, attend virtual auditions with directors and film roles from home with equipment provided by productions. Throughout the pandemic, it has been vital to Mad Dog 2020 Casting to pinpoint what people need to achieve a strong sense of greater well-being. The past year in the world of television production has taught us just that. In taking a remote working stance, our staff have reduced travel and emissions, which not only contribute to a cleaner environment but benefit productivity and well-being, too. We have identified that flexibility and staying connected both support wider well-being for not just our staff but also our artists and our clients. This is something we are passionate about projecting, in our organisation and throughout the industry. This year, technology has been an incredible light navigating many of us through an unusual time. More than ever before, we are strongly connected as an organisation, connected with our supporting artists and connected with productions around the world. VISIT: MADDOG2020CASTING.COM

MICROSOFT CATEGORY SPONSOR FOR PRODUCTION DESIGN

Microsoft is proud to be supporting the British Academy Television Craft Awards for the sixth year running. Celebrating the UK television industry’s unsung heroes, the Production Design category is important to us as it not only celebrates the incredible creative talent behind the scenes of our most beloved 30

television programmes, it also raises awareness for the sheer amount of hard work and dedication it takes to bring them to fruition. This is especially important to highlight over the last year, in which production teams have faced and overcome more challenges than ever before to ensure a Covid-safe working environment to keep the cameras rolling. In what has been another fantastic year for British television, and in a time where quality content is more important to us than ever, keeping us thoroughly entertained during the Covid-19 lockdowns, the nominated designers in this category have amazed us by creating the most awe-inspiring worlds; allowing us to truly lose ourselves in a character’s journey and indulge in the escapism we all needed. Without them, these incredible stories could not be told. They inspire us with their creativity and innovation. Over the past year, and many years before that, Microsoft has been hard at work behind the scenes, supporting production designers with prop provisions from our range of Surface and Xbox devices, along with Office 365 software clearances and Microsoft Studios gaming clearances, to enable them to tell a realistic, true-to-life and compelling visual story. SARA PUTT ASSOCIATES CATEGORY SPONSOR FOR EMERGING TALENT: FICTION

As agents representing freelance technicians and production personnel, the last year has been the most challenging we have ever known. Over a 10-day period in March 2020, more than 90 percent of our clients lost their jobs and more than 75 percent of them were not covered financially by either of the government support schemes. The industry shut down for several months, and with it the jobs we do as agents. It was a very frightening time. However, we are incredibly proud of our team and our clients, and how everyone dealt with this unique and hugely difficult set of circumstances. This truly is an industry of resilient and indomitable individuals. The thing we are most proud of at Sara Putt Associates is being a community, a family; and we have never felt that more strongly than in the last year. We had tea parties on Zoom, a quiz night and we ran a virtual short film competition for our trainees, with a gala

screening evening including a virtual red carpet. We shared recommendations for box sets, sourdough bread and knitting patterns. We are also very proud of BAFTA’s response to the pandemic. The way it moved events for the freelance community online, the financial support it offered freelancers via the Film and TV Charity and the work that so many BAFTA members, and indeed our own clients, did around the Production Protocols, which allowed the industry to get back to work by the summer – a huge achievement in itself. Good things have come out of this time. That enhanced sense of community, a little more time to build relationships online, a little more kindness perhaps. Also, many have found incredibly creative solutions to filming during a global pandemic, some of which we see rewarded here this evening. Looking forward, the television industry is buoyant, busy and employing more freelancers than ever before, and hence it is vital for us to work even harder to nurture new talent and new voices. As sponsors of the Emerging Talent: Fiction category, we are proud to show our commitment to supporting BAFTA’s work in this area. VISIT: SARAPUT T.CO.UK

SCREENSKILLS HIGH-END TV SKILLS FUND CATEGORY SPONSOR FOR PHOTOGRAPHY & LIGHTING: FICTION

coronavirus basic awareness on production training and offered mental health training to help heads of departments and managers support their crews. Other concerns we were already working to address came to the fore during lockdown, such as the treatment of freelancers. Training, such as our leadership and management programme, is designed to give freelancers tools to be better managers, while everyone can learn from the Tackling Bullying And Harassment At Work e-learning module. Longstanding pre-Covid-19 concerns haven’t gone away. Creating a more inclusive workforce and developing talent UK-wide is critical. We are running new iterations of successful programmes, such as First Break for those from disadvantaged backgrounds, and our role in building capacity will continue with programmes such as Trainee Finder, with paid placements for new entrants, and Make a Move, to help people step up into a more senior role. The priority remains on investing in addressing grade shortages in areas including production accounts, line producers and locations as HETV production continues to grow exponentially. You can’t make great television without investing in the people. We congratulate all the Photography & Lighting: Fiction nominees and thank all the nominated productions, across all categories, who contribute to the High-end TV Skills Fund. SPOTLIGHT CATEGORY SPONSOR FOR SCRIPTED CASTING ScreenSkills is the industry-led skills body for the UK’s screen industries. We help find, develop and sustain the skilled and inclusive workforce that is critical to the UK’s global screen success. The High-end TV Skills Fund, managed by ScreenSkills, supports career development opportunities for talent working at all levels in high-end television (HETV), from new entrants to executives. Since the fund was established in 2013 alongside the tax credit, more than £20m has been contributed by productions and invested in identifying current and future skills needs and practical training programmes to address them – developing the behindthe-camera talent who make the outstanding content celebrated by BAFTA. Virtually all training was moved online during the pandemic and that accessibility to all means online will remain important in the future. We developed

With a mission to connect the best acting talent with great roles, Spotlight has always recognised that every successful film or television show relies on the expertise of a team of professionals, both in front and behind the camera. Spotlight has campaigned for the recognition of casting directors for almost 20 years, so we’re delighted to be sponsoring the 2021 Scripted Casting category at the British Academy Television Craft Awards and to support BAFTA and the industry in this way. We’re well aware how crucial this craft is to the industry – casting directors bring characters to life on screen with their choices, so it’s important to celebrate this skill. VISIT: SPOTLIGHT.COM
