ENGLISH DEPARTMENT NEWS Once again we publish our English magazine; however, this is a special year. We say goodbye to two pillars of the English Department: Carlos and Yolanda. Carlos, the only man in the department, always kind, discreet and professional, the epitome of a gentleman who never loses his temper and always keeps to his principles, even when confronted with life’s ebbs and flows. Yolanda, the soul of the magazine for at least 15 years. From nearly the beginning of printed editions of “Bacon and Eggs” to the magazine of recent years in its online format. Sorry, Yolanda for having made you suffer until the last moment, waiting to include our students’ work in the magazine. Undoubtedly, “Bacon and Eggs” won’t be the same without you. Dear Carlos and Yolanda, the most outstanding turnings of your personal lives have often run parallel. You have bred children almost simultaneously, sharing parental concerns and also the ups and downs of our ever changing job, with all its hardships and gratifications. Now it is time you both start new projects. We wish you the best in your new lives and we hope you won’t forget us. Happy well deserved rest! Gloria García Guillamón y Marisa Conesa Martí

DEBATES AT IES LA FLOTA Last April 7th our school was invited to attend an activity promoted by IES La Flota Department of English. Six of our students from First Year “Bachillerato” were invited to attend the debate. The activity consisted of two teams of three students each, being Group A the Proposition Team and Group B the Reply Team.

6

The topic was, `Mobiles should be allowed at school´ Teams took turns and addressed their views to each other. The debate took place at the Assembly Hall and was presented in a very formal way. It started with the Proposition team where 3 students gave arguments and explained reasons in favour of the use of mobiles at school. These are some of reasons they gave: -’You can be distracted by anything, not only mobiles, although obviously it is not good to use them during a lesson’. -’It is good to know where other students are. She also stated that mobiles can solve any type of situations’. In the Reply turn, the first student mentioned the motto “leave your mobile at home” He explained that mobiles are useful but are also a distraction. He added that if you can’t leave them, it is because you are addicted. Group A followed giving some other views and refuting some ideas given by their opponents: -’Bringing your mobile does not necessarily mean using it all the time, but it can help you to search for information’, etc -’Bringing the mobile can help you solve problems that you may have’ Group B took turn to reply their opponents by saying that: - ‘You can use your mobile to cheat in exams’ - ‘The special situations when mobiles can “save us”, could be solved in some other ways. You can always use the school telephone in case of emergency or necessity’. Both teams gave their last conclusions and voting sheets were given to teachers and students in the audience to decide which team won the debate. All the debate took place in a very fluent way, using appropriate expressions and vocabulary and in a correct English pronunciation and intonation. Our students followed the debate attentively and finally they concluded that the activity was interesting and good but maybe too formal. Anyway, they were willing to participate in a similar debate in the future. We want to thank IES LA Flota Department of English for their excellent job and for giving us such an interesting opportunity.

Destination London On Friday 31st January my class and the class of 1st year CSE (bilingual programme) went on an English excursion to the theatre to see the play “Destination London”, performed by English speaking actors, of course. It was a special occasion for us to go out together and have fun learning English with a different activity. The play was about two teenagers, a boy and a girl, that met at the airport waiting for a plane that would take them to London. They were together during the trip and, at first, the girl wanted the boy to leave her alone because he was “a little” crazy, but finally they became friends and they discovered that they had the same host family. The performance was really funny. I enjoyed specially the songs and dances during the show, which many times included the participation of volunteers from the audience. I think this was really interesting and helpful for us to develop our oral comprehension and expression of English language, which will be very useful for us now and in the future. Finally, I’d like to congratulate our English teachers for finding this great opportunity to enjoy English. Thank you

EXCHANGE TO FRANCE

8

This year, Infante Don Juan Manuel high school organized an exchange with Douai (France) in which I participated. It was from 20th to 30th March, at the time we visited Paris, some other cities in France and Belgium, and finally we spent 6 days with a French family. In France I paired with Anabelle, she is a funny girl, cheerful, optimistic and loving. We’ve gotten along very well, because we are similar. One afternoon I went bowling with her and her parents, another day we ate at a restaurant. Her parents are sympathetic and talkative, she also has an older sister, Lucie. The last day we went to KFC restaurant I had fun with them. In conclusion, I felt very comfortable with this family and I enjoyed being with them. I invited Anabelle to my house this summer. I hope she can come and spend a few days together again; Anyway, next year she will come to my house in Murcia in May. For me, this exchange was incredible and very positive as I managed to communicate in French. I learned another culture, different customs, and the lifestyle in France. I also met many people, who I keep in touch with. That’s great for me. I strongly recommend you to have an exchange because you learn a lot and you have fun. By Andrea Valera Moreno 4º B

ALSO IN FRENCH!

Andrea Valera

MY SCHOOL TRIP TO FRANCE by beatriz cordón On 20th of March, I went to France with other 30 people of 4ESO and 3ESO of IES Infante Don Juan Manuel. We went by bus, and the first night we slept on the bus. Next day, we arrived in Paris, we saw the Eiffel Tower, and we did a tour on a boat across the river Senna. The view of Paris on the top of the Eiffel Tower was incredible. Paris is huge and is full of buildings and parks. That night, we stayed at a hotel in Paris. Next day, we were really nervous because that afternoon we were going to meet our host family of Douai. Douai was only two hours from Paris. When 10 we arrived there, we didn’t want to get out of the bus. We finally got out of the bus and we entered the Lycee Saint Jean. The families were waiting for us. One by one, we left the school with our families. Before the trip, Jeanne and me texted each other and we sent pictures and videos but I was still nervous. The family was the best I could ever have: Herveé (the father) is so funny and nice, Isabelle (the mother) is so lovely and she treated me like if I were her daughter, Jeanne is so funny and sweet, she loves a Spanish series: Violetta, and she was always singing in Spanish and dancing. Clara, who is ten years old, was always hugging me and Gabin, who is six years old, always dressed like Captain America at home. The first day with my new family we went bowling and it was very entertaining, another day we went shopping and they bought me a ring. Saint Jean was huge, I liked it very much, and the people were so nice. We went to Brussels and I bought a lot of chocolate for my friends and family. The last day, I cried a lot and all the Plouviez family too. I didn’t want to get on the bus. The day before arriving in Murcia, we went to Futurescope, It’s like an amusement park and I laughed a lot there. The best thing was the family and the worst thing of this trip was that we saw the cities too fast and we didn’t enjoy as much as we could.

MY SCHOOL TRIP TO

BURGOS

Last term, I went on a fantastic school trip to Burgos. We got there by bus. The driving took all day long. But, I didn’t get bored because you could: sleep, talk to your friends, listen to music,‌ The landscape was amazing, very green because of the rain. The weather was cloudy with short showers. The hotel was in the center and we had time to explore the city, take photos and buy some souvenirs. enjoyed going for a walk along the river banks. My three favourite things there were the Arch of Santa Maria,

I 11

the impressive gothic cathedral and the Cid Statue. I really enjoyed this school trip and if I could, I would repeat it. Elena Bello Moya 4 B

A BLOG ENTRY I want to propose the students to take part in San Silvestre race. It takes place in some cities like Murcia on December 31st. People enjoy a lot because it is an unusual race. Everyone wears funny costumes. People normally go with their friends or family. It is a half marathon. At the end of the race, runners are given a bag with a muesli and a bottle of water. People who don’t fancy running or can’t, usually stand at the finish line and cheer the people who arrive. The winner gets a fantastic prize. If I were you, I would go and join in. 12

MY FAVOURITE TRIP My trip to Kokkola, Finland by Pedro Espinosa Serrano 4 B Two years ago I went to Finland thanks to Murcia Town Hall Exchange Programmes. They organize many journeys I had the opportunity to go to Finland. This particular Exchange Programme was about music and, as I play the guitar it was really easy for me to adapt to this programme. The place was fantastic! I’ve never seen such an amazing forest! It was really big. I’d like to go back again. But who knows…….. Of course it is one of the coldest countries in winter but, on the other hand, the sun shines for 20 hours in summer time! Isn’t it incredible?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Two years ago I went to Cuba to see my family there because I hadn’t seen them for a long time. It was our second trip to la Habana but the first time I was only 5 years old so I couldn’t enjoy it. Cuba is an incredible country with the most incredible people. There’s no smoke or clouds in the sky during the day so the blue sky was reflecting on the Caribbean Sea every single day. At night , there weren’t electric lights and the sky was always shining with thousand of stars. Cubans are the best people I have ever met . They don’t have much food or money, but they are happy to share it with you. I remember that when I arrived, there at least thirty people waiting for us, my family and their neighbours. Of course, it is a save place with a lot of policemen everywhere. The people there are happy with their government although it is not a democratic one. I saw the most incredible natural places I’ve ever seen in my life, such as beaches, jungles and lakes. I think if I hadn’t gone there, I would have missed the best experience of my life. by Leopoldo Lizón Díaz 4B

FOUR YEAR CSE WRITE ABOUT INVENTIONS The telescope is used to observe distant objects in more detail by capturing electromagnetic radiation such as light. The first telescope was built in Holland, in 1608 by Hans Lippershey, a lens manufacturer. This consisted of a cylinder that had two lenses that reflected light: a fired and a movable lens. 14

In1609, Galileo Galilei built a similar telescope to study the moon. In 1668, Isaac Newton built the first reflecting telescope, the images were better and clearer. In my opinion, this invention was very important and interesting.

THE IPHONE iPhone is a line of smartphones designed and marketed by Apple Inc. Executes the iOS mobile operating system, formerly known as "iPhone OS" until mid-2010. It all started in 2005 when several engineers of Steve Jobs, Apple's chief (until 2011, replaced by Tim Cook) began to investigate touchscreens. Apple created the device with the exclusive cooperation of AT & T Mobility (Cingular Wireless at the time), at an estimated cost of 150 million dollars in a period of thirty months. AT & T gave 15 Apple the liberty to develop the hardware and software of the iPhone, and even paid Apple a fraction of the money earned by providing monthly consumer service (until the iPhone 3G), in exchange for four years of exclusivity in the United States until 2011. Nowadays, the iPhone is one of the best phones on the market and, in my opinion, it is definitely the best phone. Javier Olivares 4Year CSE (4ยบB)

Footbasketball Footbasket is a sport. In this sport you need a ball. Each game lasts 30 minutes and you play this sport outdoors In footbasket a player kicks the ball with his foot and then another player has to catch the ball with hand and hit to the basket. Normally you play this sport in football a court in which you put a basket or you can play in a basketball court in which you put a goal. Footbasket is a very fun sport where you have to be careful. Usually each team needs five persons. I really recommend this sport.

MY LIFE IN USA

18

My name is Alba, I am now 14 years old and I’m going to talk about my experience in the USA. It all started when my grandparents from my dad’s part of the family moved to the USA to work, then they only had one child Toni. When they were living there, in Virginia to be exact, my grandparents had twins, my dad and my uncle Quique. Then after they had twins born in Virginia, they had a baby girl, my aunt Mª Dolores, but that was when they were already back from the USA in Spain. So now we are talking about a couple years later when the family moved back to Spain that was when my dad was about five years old. A life-time later, my dad was the head of the family and he had three children, Pablo, Alejandro and me, Alba, and his wife. We lived in Spain until I was around eight years old and my dad was offered a job in the USA. My mum and dad were unsure if he should take it or not, but finally he decided to take it. With that, we organized the whole package of our house and sold it. So we moved there on an 8th of July, I remember because a week later, the 15th was going to be my birthday. It was summer and we were decorating and buying new furniture for our new home. On a blink of eyes, school started, I had no clue of English but I was lucky, my teacher was the best and my classmates were cool with me.

I learnt English in about three months, but anyway, until I did, I had this Mexican guy in my class to translate for me. It was funny because the principal of my school was amused, she couldn’t believe I already knew English in so little time. I definitely loved my school and my friends. My best friends were Emilya, Anne, Evie, Katie, Emily etc. There I played volleyball in our school team, we had games and tournaments. We travelled to so many places in America; New York, Las Vegas … School was actually so different from here. We had lockers it was amazing and the system was just completely different. When I was in middle school, in 6th grade, my dad had to move back to Spain because his work there was over. I couldn’t believe we were going back, on one side I wanted to but on the other hand I couldn’t imagine not being with my friends from Boulder. We made a pad which we have stuck to for now, we will never forget each other or lose contact. We will talk by Skype every time we can, which we do. It was terrible for all of us to say good bye, my brothers loved life in Boulder too. I still remember my surprise going away party like it was yesterday; we had a camp-out sleepover at the Flatirons (famous mountains in Boulder) in a tent. We took a million pictures and printed them to make scrapbooks. We decorated two different scrapbooks with all the pictures and memories and obviously I still have that giant piece of white table-cloth in which they wrote: “We love you, Alba” and signed. It couldn’t have been a better experience for me to go. I will definitely go back very soon. By Alba Serrano 3º ESO C

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

The best film in the world, undoubtedly, is “The beauty and the beast”. It’s a romance film, as the beauty loves the beast not knowing that the beast was a prince. She is lost in the forest, and she sees an old dirty castle; however, she stays there. The beast sees the beautiful girl, and both fall in love. The villagers think that the girl is crazy. How can she love a beast? She said: I love him for his humility and his kindness. Do you want to know the end? 20 Watch the film, this is really fantastic. I love it. You’ll love it too. By: Angela Marco Riquelme

By Isabel Abellán My favourite film is “Scary Movie”. This film isn’t frightening, it’s enjoyable! This comedy film is about a killer, Ghostface. In the film there are a lot of unusual events and many jokes A student, Drew Becker has got a boyfriend, but the killer kidnaps him. When Ghostface enters Drew’s house, she escaped and she is hit by a car. Meanwhile, her friends hit a man and he fall to a lake. In the parade, Ghostface murders Drew’s friend and Gail, the journalist, investigates 21 the murder, but he kills two Gail’s friends. At the end, one brother of Gail’s friend is the killer, but when she discovers this, she dies. I love “Scary Movie” but it is an old film, so I really recommend it!

FORREST GUMP A very good film to see is Forrest Gump. It is a comedydrama film. The main character is Forrest Gump. When he was a child he had a problem in his legs. The children bully him and he meets Jenny, his best friend and his true love. After a lot of years, he was a famous American football player. He is not clever but he graduates at the university. Then he enlists in the army and he goes to Vietnam. He becomes an American celebrity and he receives a medal of honor in the army. 22 After many adventures, he marries Jenny and they have got a son. Forrest Gump is an interesting and amusing film, with a special message for everybody, so I really recommend it. Javier RodrĂguez Alcaraz, 1Âş ESO E

MADAGASCAR 3 The best film to see in the cinema is Madagascar 3 Madagascar is an animated 3D film for all ages . The main character is Alex, the lion. Alex and his friends: the zebra, the hippopotamus and the giraffe go to the circus and there they meet other animals and with them, they have a lot of adventures. The circus didn’t succeed, but Alex and his friends made a show and got a great success. I recommend this film to everybody.

300 is a fantasy and action film based on the Battle of Thermopylae. The protagonist is a man called Leonidas, he is trained to be a warrior. So he fought for his country Sparta. He grew and became King of Sparta. Persians, joined a 300.000 soldiers army to fight. Greece army had 300 Spartans. War began. Leonidas and his men resisted on the first battle. Efialtes betrayed the Spartans and he pointed the way to defeat the Greeks. Finally, Spartans died with pride. This is my favourite film.

A LETTER TO MY GRANNY CARMEN

24

Hello Granny, I hope you are alright. You should know that I’ve got very good marks this term. I have worked very hard. The doctor said that you couldn’t breath and I didn’t believe him. I didn’t think you were going to die. I miss you Granny, because you made many things for me: You used to make my birthday’s cakes and even my favourite ice-creams. You bought me the presents I liked, You told me about your secrets and when you talked with your brothers, cousins and friends you used to say nice things about me. You looked after me. I want you to be alive. It doesn’t feel well. Sometimes, I was naughty and I didn’t pay attention to you. You used to ask me to kiss you but I didn’t . I used to run away to the street, and then you were worried. Will you forgive me? I want you to be happy and I want to send you all my kisses. Although I cannot see you, I know you are with me. I love you, granny . I will never forget you. Your grandchild. Ismael

OUR POET’S CORNER PARIS IN YOUR EYES I got lost in the Paris of your eyes, I got embroiled with the lids of them, the charmy colour of your lashes and your lighting lilac pupils confused me. I succumbed to your voice and smiles, I shelter your kisses and likes that made my love a daring retreat for your winter and nights. I dug violent snow traps for you to look for a conciliating sigh like a feather flies so mild I felt naked at your sight. When my heart burst into fire. it removed the voice of thousand sonnets floating with your perfume and noise. Adrián González 2º B BACH.

MY ROOTS Some of our students come from different places in the world. We can learn from them about different cultures and backgrounds and together, make the world a better place. My Home Town: Friend of the Environment

26

I was born in a little country in Latinoamerica. It is called Equator there, there is a little city, Puyo where I am used to go every summer. Puyo, the green city, is beautiful and an ecotown. It has a lot of tourists. It’s a little town, however it hasn’t serious environmental problems. The city as I can remember has got high temperatures in summer but some months it rains a lot. As a result of this, the temperatures are very warm to live in there. There is an eco-park where the animals are free. Most people go there and they have fun. In this eco-park there are parrots, lions, monkeys, and other animals. In the entrance there is a restaurant with a swimming pool because in this park you go to spend all day. The city needs to improve its roads. Due to pot-holes normally in the long trips people feel tired. In addition, the cars can break down and it is not too easy to find a mechanic. Although Puyo is in theory a “green city” there are a few thigs that help it. It is an environmentally friendly town.

Jesus is watching you! A burglar broke into a house one night. He shone his flashlight around, looking for valuables when a voice in the dark said, 'Jesus is watching you.' He nearly jumped out of his skin , clicked his flashlight off, and froze. When he heard nothing more after a while, he shook his head and continued. Just as he pulled the stereo out so he could disconnect the wires, clear as a bell he heard 'Jesus is watching you.' Freaked out , he shone his light around frantically, looking for the source of the voice. Finally, in the corner of the room, his flashlight beam came to rest on a parrot. “Did you say that?' he hissed at the parrot. 'Yep', the parrot confessed, then squawked, 'I'm just trying to warn you that he is watching you.' The burglar relaxed.. 'Warn me, huh? Who on earth are you?' ‘Moses,' replied the bird. 'Moses?' the burglar laughed. 'What kind of people would name a bird Moses?' 'The kind of people that would name a Rottweiler Jesus!' Click here to listen to the story
