We are coming to the end of the school year and here we are again to show you some of the activities and works of the students along the year. We want to thank to all the teachers from the English Department who have collaborated in selecting their students’ productions and to the students that have written for the magazine. This has been a great year for our deaf students that had the opportunity to go to England, learn English sign language and visit many interesting places. We hope you enjoy this issue and join us in the next one!

3 L Last October the group of deaf students of this school went to England to visit a city near London. s We W stayed in a cottage near a beautiful village with w a harbour. The T first day we went to the school “Philips Morant”. M In that school there were deaf students. We W met hearing students too. We learned English Sign S Language. It was great! On the second day we went to the city of Colchester. That city is beautiful and old because Romans had already been there. We visited the city Hall. It was interesting. The third day we went to London. That day was my best day. I enjoyed a lot because we went up to the London Eye. I could see half of the city from there. After that, we walked to St James’s Park. There we could see lots of squirrels, ducks and other animals. We had a great time and some of us want to go back to England. by Adrián González Morejón (2º C Bachillerato)

AN ENGLISH MAN AT IES INFANTE M

y name is David Huggon and I teach Spanish at the Colchester Sixth Form College in the South East of England. Ten years ago, back in 1999, I wrote to Isabel Rubio in “El Infante” in Murcia asking if she would like to do a teacher exchange with me for an academic year. She said yes, and in September of that year she came to teach in my College whilst I set off for Murcia with my wife Anne-Marie and my two boys Tom and Chris. Looking back now, a decade later, I must say that it was a great experience for me, in some ways I would say that it was almost life changing. Murcia 2000

But it was also very hard at times too. Apart from the impossible Murcia accent I also remember, when I arrived in September, that I could’t believe how hot it was. It took me a long while to get used to the climate, it was like being on holiday. But later on in the year, December and January, when things started to cool down a bit I used to enjoy walking to school in short sleeves whilst all the pupils in Infante looked like they were about to die of hypothermia, wearing two coats and scarves. One of the other things that sticks in my memory about teaching was that, although the students in the school were quite shy about speaking English, they absolutely loved singing. In fact I think I spent half of my English lessons singing in class. Happy days! My two boys Tom and Chris were 8 and 6 at the time we arrived. They spoke hardly a word of Spanish apart from Vamos a la playa (which after a few weeks in Murcia became Vamo’ a la playa) and they found it hard to adapt to life. However after a few months they settled in and started to speak good Spanish (if you can call the Murcian accent “good Spanish” ? ... that’s a joke, by the way). They made a few good friends and are still in touch with some of them. My two boys have continued to speak Spanish ever since. Tom is now travelling in South America and is going to be studying Spanish and French at King’s College, an London, next year whilst Chris is in 1st Year Sixth studying Spanish, Lo Italian, Music and French in Colchester Sixth form College. Ita And of course one of the best things about our year in Murcia is that An my wife had a little baby after we got back to England. His name is m Patrick, and he was born on 17th March 2001. He also speaks pretty Pa good Spanish like his brothers. After all he was “made in Murcia”. go Colchester 2010

I really enjoyed working with the English department at the school and it was great to be with such good people, especially (in alphabetical order!) Carlos, Carmen, Josy (since retired) and Yolanda. They were excellent colleagues and really helped me a lot whilst I was there, in many different ways. I am very grateful to Isabel, Yolanda and company for giving me such a wonderful opportunity.

DESCRIBING FRIENDS The person I’m writing about is my friend Blanca. She is tall and she is in her teens. She is slim and she’s got long brown straight hair. She’s got an oval face and pale complexion. Her eyes are small round and brown. She usually wears smart clothes. I think She is happy, friendly and loyal. She is essential for me because she is sensitive and patient. I can always count on her. Blanca is the most reliable girl in the world. Javier J is so extroverted, when we are together he is i very chatty. He is the kind of person who I feel c comfortable with. Some people say he is big-headed, but I don’t think so, I think he is very sociable and kind. One O thing that I like about him is that he isn’t two-faced and always tells me his opinions. Julia is my best friend, she is seventeen years old and she is very beautiful. She is tall and thin, she has olive skin and her face is oval. She wears glasses and she has got big green eyes and long eyelashes; she has got short curly brown hair and a small nose, she has got big ears and full lips. She is very friendly and sociable, and kind and unselfish with her friends but she is a bit cautious. She is quite insecure too and sometimes pessimistic. She is very sensible and fun, but she is sad now because she is having a hard time. She loves eating sweets and going to the cinema. She goes to the scouts’ every Saturday and in Winter she goes to ski with her parents. Julia is a very special person, because she always helps me and listens to me; she is a great person. I want her to be near me always, and I hope that everything is OK for her. I will help her in everything I can. Berta Mª Sánchez Estrella (1ºE)


The mini skirt Mary Quant, a shop assistant, is the inventor of the mini skirts. She confessed, that everything began because she had wear her cousin’s old dresses/clothes. She made her own dresses. First she changed her school uniform and made it shorter and shorter. At first, she tried to sell chothes designed by others but she failed. Mary didn’t like the style of the fifties, it was boring, outdated and expensive for her. Then, she decided to make her own designs. Her objective was to make more youthful clothes. In 1961 she opened her second Bazzar and two years later she exported clothes to the United States and received an award from the fashion magazine of '' The Sunday Times ''. In 1963, when The Beatles released their second single, ''Please, Please Me'', Mary Quant caused some interest when she presented her shorts and wide dresses in Vogue. In her design studio in London, she eliminated several centimetres of the skirt, and it became the famous mini skirt nowadays. The miniskirt became into a symbol of youth ''in''. In 1960 Mary Quant's designs were worn by Brigitte Bardot, Nancy Sinatra and Audrey Hepburn. In 1969 she made another ''bomb'' in the world of fashion: the ''hot pants'', which were the shorts equivalent to the mini skirts. In 1973 the Museum of London gave her a retrospective award in recognition of her enormous contribution to the world of fashion. Meanwhile, Livesey, Trelawney and their men had to abandon the ship because the pirates had gone aboard. Then they hid into a hut, where afterwards they met Jim and Ben. Silver tried to negotiate with the captain, but he refused. Other day Jim left the hut and went to the ship to recover it from the pirates. Finally he got the ship with the help of one of the pirates. When the ship was near the beach, the pirate tried to murder Jim, but he survived and the one who died was the pirate. Then Jim hid the ship where the pirates couldn’t find it. After that, Jim returned to the hut, but the pirates where there and they caught Jim. They wanted to kill him, but Silver defended him. Later, all of them went out looking for the treasure, because Silver had obtained the map from Dr. Livesey. But when they found the place, the treasure wasn’t there. In that moment Dr. Livesey and his men attacked the pirates, rescuing Jim and capturing Silver as a prisoner. Finally they went to pick the treasure up, which had been hidden by Ben long time ago, and began the journey back. During the trip Silver ran away with a part of the treasure.

Robinson Crusoe

Robinson was born in the year 1632, in the city of York, of a good family. At a very early age he wanted to go to sea. His father begged him not to do so. But one day in the city of Hull he met a friend who was going to sea on his father’s ship, and Robinson went on board the ship with his friend. The ship was lost in the storm, but Robinson survived. A great wave took him and carried him on towards the shore. He managed to survive on the island building a house, pots, a lamp and so. One day, Robinson discovered there were cannibals on the island. He got to save a cannibal’s prisoner whom he named “Friday”. Friday and Robinson became very good friends, and they survived on the island. An English ship, at last, rescued Robinson.


FIRST CONFERENCE ON CLASSICAL STUDIES During the first and second week of the third term, we enjoyed with the first conference on classical studies. On the first Wednesday we had a school trip to Cartagena. We visited the archeological museum and we saw a performance about Electra’s Tragedy. Next day Rosa Maria Iglesias and Consuelo Alvarez, P Professors o of Murcia U University, came to our High School to c g give us a lecture about O Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Diwali Festival

India Diwali is a significant festival in Hinduism, Sikhism, and Jainism. It is celebrated for 5 days according to the lunar Hindu Calendar. The word ‘Diwali’ means row of lamps. It’s traditional to light small clay lamps in this festival filled with oil; it signifies the triumph of good over evil within an individual. •The first day of Diwali Festival People prepare their houses by cleaning them and than make ‘Rangoli’ patterns on their doorstep or on the pavement outside their houses. • The second day of Diwali Festival People have baths with oils and then they recive new clothes and jewellery of their relatives.

10 • Third day of Diwali Festival this is the

main day of the festival. People go to the temple in the morning with their families. • Fourth day of Diwali Festival this is the start of the Hindu new year.

• Fifth day of Diwali Festival on the final day of the festival a brother should be with his sister wherever she is, then the girl will receive a gift of her brother such as new clothes or sweets. Some traditional sweets of this festival are: Malpuda (Sweetened pancakes with raisins) and Kalakand (Indian sweet made of milk and nuts). Diwali in other parts of the world: U.K. In Britain, Hindus and Sikhs celebrate Diwali in most ways very similarly to as in India. People clean and decorate their homes with lamps and candles. People also give each other sweets such as laddoo and barfi. It is also an important time to contact family in India and perhaps exchange gifts through the post. By Florencia Pusch

My granfather My grandfather’s name is Bartolomej

Flasko. He was born on the 5th of June, 1924 in Slovakia, in a small Hungarian village in the south-east of Slovakia at the SlovakHungarian border.

He grew up in a farmers family. His parents ents had animals such as cows, pigs, ducks, geese, a dog and a cat. They cultivated their fields with their oxen. My grandfather was a very hardworking young boy but he studied too because he wanted to be an accountant. But on a sunny spring day in 1945, after the Second World War, when he was working with his father in their fields, some soldiers came and took him to the police station and he was accused of being a spy. He was taken unjustifiably to force work to Siberia. He, like other innocent people, was condemned to work in a copper mine during 9 long ,cruel years. His life was worse than a dog’s nowadays. The temperatures oscillated between -50° and 50° during the year. In 1954 they all got amnesty and returned home by train. The journey lasted 40 days. He couldn’t meet his mother again because she had died 3 months before. So, nowadays my grandpa is 85 and he is a very kind and cheerful person. I really love him the best. They had to work on a Global Issue they were concerned about, search for information in English, write main ideas on the topic in their own words and add some pictures, maps, key words and data to help them explain it in front of their classmates. Finally, they had to present it in front of other students so that everybody could learn about the topic.

MY YEARS AT INFANTE

It’s time to say goodbye. I can’t believe what has happened during these six years. It all started one sunny day in September of 2004. I had already left the school just a few months ago and suddenly, I saw myself for the first time coming into the High School. A new door was opening. Perhaps for that reason, I felt so nervous. Although I was not afraid of the future, I was rather impatient to live it. This first year was unforgettable, luckily, I found myself in a class where I met a lot of people, their virtues and their defects were combined in perfect harmony to create an incredible atmosphere. The first years were perfect; I was feeling, little by little, how I was building a solid foundation on which it was balanced both friends and studies. I have sweet memories of the following years, because I began to know people who have been or are my best friends. Furthermore, the different trips made us a family since Granada, Madrid, Toledo, Burgos and the last trip as a secondary student to Paris. I have to admit that all trips have been something that made them unique but I have to highlight Paris, this city that makes me love it and where the living and the desire to have fun were extreme. Apart from travel and friends, different teachers who have taught me, they have helped me not only learn about how the body is, to calculate an equation or syntax, they also have helped me find what I really like and what I dedicate in my life, namely that there are still many things that I have to know and above all, they have helped me become the woman that I am now. On the other hand, these last two years where the tension really comes down to an examination of PAU has made me miss the previous years, although, it is normal in the student’s life. These last two years have been very important for me and I have known special people who have made me really happy. The latest trips as Seville, the exchange students from England who taught us their culture and of whom we became friends and of course, the unforgettable trip to Italy where I saw a lot of beautiful cities like Venice, Florence or Rome. All classes that I have received with their bad and good times, hundreds of breaks between my friends taking advantage of every second to speak about the latest gossip or just to have fun and laugh. It will not be the same in the coming years, but someday this would have to end to begin a new stage. It is true that I won’t find words to describe the multitude of feelings, both good and bad days, times and laughter that have painted my years at the High School and are now stored in my memory, leaving the hope and optimism for the future. MY YEARS AT INFANTE

It’s my last year at secondary school so I would like to write about it and describe everything I remember. When I was eleven, I saw for the first time what would be my school for the next six years. At first I was really frightened. The first thing I saw was a lot of people older than me. I felt that it was too big for me. But, little by little, everything changed. I started to know where all the classes were and I met a lot of classmates. There was a comfortable atmosphere and I began to enjoy going to school. In these six years I could learn not only maths, languages or sciences, I have learnt to be a person. All our teachers’ advice, all the experiences, all the good moments, but also the problems which have made us mature persons. Now I can see real friends among my classmates and I am fond of my teachers. I think the best thing about school is that there is no discrimination and there are a lot of different people. No doubt, I will miss the school trips, the sound of the bell, the breaks, the familiarity with teachers, the classmates, the smell of the canteen and most of all I will miss how I feel in what forever will be my secondary school. From lessons I’ll rremember the funny moments, the shaking when I had to do a presentation and some things our tteachers taught us that called my attention. I w will remember the breaks on the playground and o outside high-school, the trips, the trips shared w with my friends and all the important decisions I have h to make along these years. FILM REVIEW HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHER’S STONE

T Ten years ago, I went to see this film to Zig Zag cinema. It was an exciting film, with a Z b of humor, a lot of excellent action scenes, bit and a a fantastic soundtrack. There also were lots of young actors, such as Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and Tom Felton. The director was Chris Colombus. The film is based on the first of J. K. Rowling’s books. It’s a fantastic film, about wizards. It contains some special effects. The story is about a baby, Harry, who survived to the spell from a bad wizard called Voldemort, and he had to go to live with his terrible relatives. When he’s eleven years old, he gets a letter from Howarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and he goes there to learn magic. With his new friends, Ron and Hermione, he discovers the whereabouts of the Philosopher’s Stone and he rescues it from Voldemort. This movie has been very successful worldwide and increased the sales of the saga of Harry Potter books.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND Last weekend, I went to the cinema with my friends to see the new Tim Burton film, Alice in Wonderland. It’s on at the cinemas since April 16th so the Thader was crowded with people wanting to see the film. While my best friend was buying the tickets at the box office, I went to get popcorn and some sweets. When we went in, the cinema usher gave us special glasses to see the film in 3D. We sat in the back row. The film had already started so we couldn’t see any advertisements or trailers. This is a fantastic film with lots of special effects and colourful images which recreate the sensation of being in a dream, just as in Alice’s story. There were some very famous film stars such as Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham-Carter and Anne Hathaway. My favourite character is the “Mad Hater” which is played brilliantly by Johnny Depp. I loved the film and I think people should go and see it. By: Belén Escavy Galán (3ºB)

Il y a beaucoup de différences entre les Espagnols et les Français : Nous, nous sommes plus bruyants en parlant que voisins. Au contraire les Français sont plus tranquilles et plus sérieux que nous. En général, les Espagnols sont très spirituels et les Français sont très froids. Nous sommes plus extravertis, mais nous ne sommes pas si polis qu’eux : nous crions plus. A mon avis, nous sommes plus amusants, très originaux et, surtout, nous sommes toujours gais. Par ailleurs, nos fêtes sont plus religieuses. Pourtant, les Français ont d’autres types de fêtes, comme le Poisson d’Avril ou Pâques. D’autre part, la cuisine française est plus sophistiquée, ils font tout avec du beurre et des sauces, alors que les Espagnols font la cuisine à l’huile d’olive et de tournesol. Chez nous, la nourriture méditerranéenne est plus saine, tandis que la leur est plus élaborée.

PRÉJUGÉS SUR LES FRANÇAIS • Les Français sont plus froids, moins bavards et ils ont moins ouverts au premier contact. • Ils sont hostiles et très peu sont cordiaux. • Ils pensent qu’ils sont le centre du monde. • Ils détestent les Espagnols. • Ils sont difficiles à aborder. • Ils sont arrogants, secs et pas du tout amicaux. PRÉJUGÉS SUR LES ESPAGNOLS • Les Espagnols sont gais, ouverts, sympathiques, amu sants et ils ont un bon climat. • Ils sont liés à la célébration, la joie et le soleil. • Ils aiment faire une petite sieste. * Paris est très jolie, mais des villes comme Madrid et San Sebastián n’ont rien à envier. MON OPINION SUR LES FRANÇAIS Quand je pense à laFrance j’imagine : Paris, la Tour Eiffel, Charles Aznavour, un homme que joue d’un accordéon, le Louvre, des crêpes, des petites tables dans la rue, Nôtre Dame de Paris, le musée D’Orsay et les films : « Les Choristes », « Odette », « Amélie Poulain » et « Paris Je t’aime ». À mon avis, il y a beaucoup de gens qui ont de faux préjugés sur les Français (ceux que j’ai nommés avant). Je sais que normalement les Espagnols sont plus ouverts que les Français mais je me souviens de mon voyage à Paris qui a été une expérience incroyable. J’ai pu constater que les Français sont très corrects, polis et charmants. Ils t’aident et ils font beaucoup de blagues. Alors pour connaître vraiment un pays, il faut voyager et ne pas croire aux faux préjugés.

GORETTI (SOPHIE) I felt very special on stage. It was an p experience that cannot be explained, since you have to represent a character – Sophie – that you do not know at all and feel her as if she were you. I’m looking forward to feeling this sensation again and I strongly recommend everyone to try an experience like this.

This musical has been one of the best experiences of my life! When I came out onto the stage I felt a wonderful feeling that I can’t explain. I had never thought that people would like it so much. It’s just fantastic!
