WELCOME Step into a brighter future and study at Bishop Auckland College. We have a wide range of specialist facilities and courses, enabling you to learn the skills and gain the knowledge required for a successful and fulfilling career. Bishop Auckland College has a great track record, with a consistently ‘Good’ rating from Ofsted (most recently in November 2011) and success rates in the top 25 per cent of colleges in the country – we’re serious about giving our students a great learning experience. “Bishop Auckland College is relentless in its pursuit to drive up the quality of teaching and learning.” Ofsted 2011

Get the skills, get the job… We’re a uniquely vocational college committed to supporting young people. With strong employer links, award winning Apprenticeship schemes, a recruitment agency on-site and friendly and supportive tutors we are the first choice for students who are serious about getting a job. At college you are treated like an adult and get used to a higher level of independence making it much easier for you to enter into employment or go on to university.

“Graduates are more likely to be employed throughout their lives, and as likely to succeed in higher education, if they studied a vocational course at college.” BTEC students had a full-time employment rate of 80% compared with 74% for A-Level only students, shown in a new study by London Economics (May 2013). So whether you want to go straight into a job or go on to university we know choosing the course and college to suit you is a big decision. We want you to get the right qualification, have fun and make friends along the way – so why not come to one of our open evenings and speak to the tutors and careers advisers, meet some of our current students and view our fantastic facilities!

Whilst the College provides a support service to help you find an employer, we cannot guarantee you a job. There are lots of switched on employers looking for switched on apprentices. A bit of planning and investigation will give you the edge. You can start the ball rolling by applying to companies whilst still at school, with a view to being taken on as an apprentice once you leave. They may also want you to do some work experience before leaving school.

HOW DO I APPLY FOR JOBS? It looks easy – and it can be if you put in the preparation. If you haven’t had much experience at job hunting don’t worry, the College can help with CV preparation and interview techniques.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? If you secure a job, the College will work with you and your employer to begin your Apprenticeship as soon as possible. If you do not have a job, you should still apply for an Apprenticeship and we will invite you to attend an interview. It is a good idea to visit the College website to look for vacancies and come along to one of our open evenings. You can also register with the National Apprenticeship Service.

A Levels are not the only route to degrees A Levels are the traditional way to get to university, but more students are now choosing a vocational route. Bishop Auckland College offers many National Diplomas at Level 3, which are worth the same as three A Levels (which is what most universities expect you to have before starting a degree). College restaurant offers the Michelin star treatment Award winning chef James Close ran the kitchen at the restaurant, where diners enjoyed a five-course taster menu showcasing food from the North East’s only Michelin star venue – The Raby Hunt at Summerhouse near Darlington. James has joined forces with the College to help deliver its new Level 5 HND Hospitality Management course, running a Michelin Masterclass for students on the two-year programme. To launch the new partnership, James worked with catering students at his own restaurant to prepare a special gourmet menu. James and his team, assisted by 12 catering and hospitality students, then cooked and served the food at the College restaurant for their guests, who included local headteachers, chefs, business leaders and journalists.

Guests experienced the Michelin star treatment at the recent launch of the College’s Ambition Restaurant earlier this year.

“We are delighted James has agreed to work with us to help us further develop our catering and hospitality curriculum and inspire the next generation of talented chefs and hospitality managers. Bishop Auckland College is absolutely committed to helping people aim high and fulfill their ambitions.” Natalie Davison, Principal, Bishop Auckland College
