Words of A Child
Composer Michael tippett first asked t.s. Eliot to write the libretto for a child of our time. However, the poet urged tippett to tell his own story. in parallel to the chorales of Bach’s st. Matthew Passion, tippett integrated American spirituals such as steal Away, Go down Moses, and deep river as choral commentaries on the action. this brilliant choice enables the work to reach the deepest levels of our common humanity. its haunting narrative and rich climaxes embrace both the shadow and light of our collective whole.
