Sy bedank alle borge wat ‘n verskil gemaak het in die lewens van hierdie families. Die projek was geseënd met 84 voedselbewyse ter waarde van R44 500 wat uitgedeel is. Terwyl hierdie bewyse afgelewer is, was ons in die lokaal waar van die minderbevoorregte kinders ontbyt geëet het. Wat opmerklik was is die feit dat hul die pap stadig eet met koue melk en daarna word die tannie wat dit voorgesit het omhels met ‘n stywe drukkie en glimlag. Mense hoe-
veel van ons weier om ons pap met koue melk te geniet en kan kies en keur watter soort pap jou gunsteling is om te eet. Die skole doen deur die jaar moeite om die pot aan die kook te hou by die huisgesinne. Dalk is 2019 se nuwejaarsvoorneme vir elke lid van die gemeenskap ‘n geopende deur om meer betrokke te raak en te verseker dat geen persoon honger gaan slaap nie.

Pass rate 48% Congratulations on the achievements of the Matric Classes of 2018 and thank you to the principals and teachers of this province for their dedication and unflinching commitment to ensuring that our learners have the best possible chance of a successful future. However, what lies under the cosmetic pass rate of 87.9% is the reality of learners who did not reach Grade 10 in the expected time or have dropped out of the failing education system. Taking this into account, Gauteng’s real pass rate sits at 48,3%. This is in stark contrast to the inflated and skewed figure presented by Education MEC, Panyaza Lesufi. Youth languishing at home or in lower grades than expected, due to the failing education system in Gauteng, certainly do not share Lesufi’s joy. Furhermore, of the 172,507 learners who were enrolled in Grade 10 in Gauteng in 2016, only 55% sat for their matric exams, what happened to the remaining 77,637 learners who slipped through the education net? What do their futures look like? The effects of the constant downward shifts in
Fraud and corruption Reports suggest that ANC President, Cyril Ramaphosa, is set to meet face to face with his predecessor, Jacob Zuma, to address an array of matters which includes Zuma’s upcoming corruption court case. For over 10 years, the people of South Africa have been forced to pay for Zuma’s legal fees in his guileful bid to avoid jail for over 783 counts of fraud, corruption and racketeering. Other departments requested that on behalf of the nation that he must cancel the deal with immediate effect. Cancelling this deal would represent a clean break with South Africa’s damaging and frustrating past. It would send a clear message to the nation that public money will no longer be abused for personal ends, and that all South Africans – including public representatives – will be equal before the law going forward. President Ramaphosa’s administration has already increased VAT, sin tax, sugar tax and the price of fuel – all of which hit the poor hardest. It is grossly unfair to expect struggling South Africans to continue to pay for a former President’s attempts to avoid accountability.
the subject pass rates, the lack of monitoring of and evaluation systems for teacher performance, the lack of clear policy direction, union interference, sex and cash for jobs scandals and the absence of leadership in our schools. For every school which ‘defied the odds’ this year, there are many more that failed in providing our learners with access to education, and hope for a better future. Still, despite a number of interventions, not all our schools have access to the same resources, resulting in some schools being oversubscribed and others standing empty. This results in crowded classrooms and more pressurized learning environments. These conditions disadvantage our learners in a multitude of ways which results in an unequal playing field with some learners having to fight that much harder for a job. After all, a number, such as a pass rate, means nothing if it is not underpinned by a quality, world class education which gives our learners the required level of verbal and numerical literacy demanded by our province’s fast-paced and dynamic economy. Every single learner is a valuable resource which we cannot afford to lose. So, while there are many reasons to celebrate today, let us be realistic about the crisis we face and what is needed from us to ensure all our learners are provided with the knowledge and skills to ensure fair and equal access to job opportunities. We owe it to our children.

Parents should encourage their children to be more independent and, where possible, to think for themselves. Children who get enough sleep are likely to be less short-tempered and better able to handle school stress.

OLDER PEOPLE Older people are more vulnerable because they tend to be frail. As a result, special measures must be taken to protect them. IF YOU ARE A SENIOR CITIZEN Become safety-conscious. Every elderly person is a potential target. Be realistic. Don‘t overestimate your strength. Rather take sensible precautions. Know your neighbours and request help if necessary. Don‘t hesitate to call the police or neighbourhood watch if you are suspicious. They are very concerned about the high crime rate amongst the elderly. If possible, install an alarm system, peepholes, security gates, security chains or a panic button linked to a control centre telephonically. Don‘t allow a fixed pattern every day. Vary the times you go to the shops, fetch the post, etc. If possible, be inside before dark. Avoid parks, vacant land, empty buildings and deserted areas on your route. Try to walk with others.
