How binge-watching tv can wreck our immune systems Nicole Jennings, spokesperson for Pharma Dynamics – a leading provider of colds and flu medication – says the relatively new phenomenon of being able to watch an entire TV series all at once, as opposed to waiting a week, has sparked several studies that attempt to understand how binge-watching is impacting our health. She cites a paper published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine which found that people’s addiction to watching TV series can lead to chronic fatigue, which has a damaging effect on immunity. According to the study, over half (52%) of binge-watchers viewed three to four episodes in one sitting, with an average session lasting three hours. If one considers that most of the watching occurs in the evening, that doesn’t leave much shuteye.
Binge-watchers also reported more fatigue and insomnia and had 98% more chance of having poor quality sleep. Adults need between 7 and 9 hours of uninterrupted sleep every night in order for the immune system to function optimally. Marathon-viewing can also exacerbate mindless eating and unhealthy snacking – both detrimental to your waistline and immunity. Fatty, fried foods increase bad cholesterol and can cause inflammation, leading to reduced immunity, while sugar can hinder the body’s ability to produce germ-fighting white blood cells that destroy foreign pathogens. Watching your favourite characters drink a beer or smoke a cigarette might also trigger a craving for these substances, which have been proven to lower immunity.

On May 16, a train conductor made a horrifying discovery that someone had tied a dog to train tracks in the area of Alliance, in Daveyton. The heroic conductor alerted the SPCA right away, and the group was able to rescue the dog, whom they named Max, from what could have been a truly horrific death. The Benoni SPCA are investigating but have yet to make any arrests in the case, prompting PETA to offer a reward of up to R50,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction on cruelty-toanimals charges of the person or persons responsible for this crime.

Integrated Law Enforcement Operation led to arrest of five cash in transit robbery suspects which took place on Atlas Road in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni last week. The efforts of integration within various Law Enforcement Agencies in the Province are beginning to bear fruits. The five suspects are part of the group of ten men who robbed two cash in transit vehicles of an undisclosed amount of money. Eight people sustained injuries amongst them security guards who were in the two cash in transit vehicles. During the arrest, police recovered three vehicles, a rifle and money that was stolen during the robbery. In recent weeks Gauteng has experienced a spate of cash in transit robberies in various areas. The brazen nature of these robberies is shocking and put the lives of ordinary citizens in danger.
In June the National Energy Regulator of SA (Nersa) will decide whether to allow Eskom to increase electricity prices enough to raise an extra R66.6 billion from South Africans. If Nersa were to allow Eskom to raise that money in a single year, electricity prices could increase by more than a third overnight. If they approve Eskom’s application for a 30% price increase, the country runs the risk of killing off economic activity, increased job losses, and numerous business closures, according to experts in economics, energy and mining. Coupled with increases in Value Added Tax (VAT), fuel levies, and an approved 5.2% electricity price increase on April 1, consumers should tighten their belts. Eskom’s application is based on their Regulatory Clearing Account that compares uncontrollable expenses and income, as assumed in the multi-year price determination (MYPD), to the company’s actual income and expenses. This allows Eskom to apply for increases over and above the MYPD to cover shortfalls. Eskom is yet to file its five-year MYPD application, which could see another 20% increase. Eskom needs to recover massive revenue losses, and electricity users will

R1.5 million recovered from a house in Tsakane by Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department. It was found in a house of an SBV security guard who is alleged to be involved in heists in Gauteng. Four people have been arrested after the Ekurhuleni Metro Police uncovered large sums of money. The money was recovered by the department's tracing unit in Langaville. The money was recovered from a home owned by a couple who claim they are keeping it safe for a SBV guard.

Make A Difference campaign Gibela has publicly renewed its commitment to Make A Difference in the communities neighbouring its Dunnottar factory at an event at Mom Sebone Secondary School in Duduza. The Make A Difference campaign brings together a number of projects, each with a focus on education and skills development. Gibela’s Economic Development Director Dr Buyiswa Mncono Liwani, explained why the company has selected education as its primary focus: “Education is a great enabler in shaping young people as active global citizens who will put South Africa on the map, this can only be achieved when they are given tools to solve problems, innovate and develop new products, and to make new discoveries. We are creating awareness about careers in science, technology, engineering and
maths and thus preparing learners to adapt to skills relevant in the modern workplace”. Gibela’s socio-economic development projects include: Educational support, with a deliberate focus on maths and science. A partnership between Gibela and ASHA to deliver early childhood development (ECD) and money management skills to practitioners in Ekurhuleni and Mamelodi. The C.A.R.E programme equips ECD practitioners with basic knowledge and understanding of the early childhood education framework in South Africa. The Gibela team, accompanied by the local Department of Education is rolling out the Make a Difference campaign at six schools based in Duduza, KwaThema and Tsakane. A donation of shoes was made to 2 000 primary and high school learners.

Konsternasie! Betaalkanaal SuperSport sê dat die kanaal die voormalige Springbok Naas Botha nie van sy televisieskerms sal verwyder nie, ten spyte van bewerings van finansiële wanbestuur. Ten spyte van die eise, sê 'n woordvoerder van SuperSport, Clinton van der Berg, dat hulle nie by die bewerings teen Botha betrokke sal raak nie. Van den Berg vertel dat hul wel bewus is van die uitlatings teen Naas maar sien dit as 'n private saak. Naas gaan voort met sy werk as sportaanbieder. Hy is 'n baie goeie ou en geen stappe sal geneem word nie, "het Van der Berg gesê. Botha het tussen 1980 en 1992 28 toetse op losskakel vir die Springbokke gespeel en is al meer as 20 jaar 'n rugby aanbieder op SuperSport. Dit was 'n paar dae lank dat die voormalige Springbok-afrigter, Nick Mallet, nou as ontleder vir SuperSport werk, aangesien hy hom in die middel van 'n kontroversie bevind het met die voormalige Springbokvleuel Ashwin Willemse wat die land aangegryp het. Willemse, SuperSport-ontleder, het Saterdagaand, 19 Mei op die lewendige stel na die Lions v Brumbies Super Rugbywedstryd in Johannesburg uitgeloop. Hy het beweer dat hy deur Mallett en medekollega Naas Botha gediskrediteer is. Willemse het gesê dat hy "nie kan werk met mense wat ander mense ondermyn nie" en dat hy "bly is dit het gebeur op lewendige TV sodat mense kan sien".
Die voorval het intense debat oor SuidAfrika veroorsaak, met menings wat oor sosiale en hoofstroom media beweeg. SuperSport het 'n vergadering tussen Mallett, Willemse en Botha gefasiliteer, maar dit is daarna bevestig dat daar geen "gevolgtrekkings" gevind is nie. Volgens mnr. Gideon Khobane, uitvoerende hoof van SuperSport, is al drie partye aangemoedig om tyd te neem om hul gedagtes skoon maak. "Dit het Naas en Nick onverhoeds oorval. Hulle sal ook gevoelens hê wat gerespekteer moet word, gegewe die openbare aard van die gebeurtenis ... hulle mag hul rugby onder apartheid gespeel het, maar hulle is ikone van die spel wat respek verdien. "Persepsies en gevoelens is hier belangrik. Dit is belangrik nie net dat Ashwin openlik praat nie, maar dat Nick en Naas hulself kwesbaar maak deur ook openlik te praat. En dit het niks te doen met iemand anders as hulle nie. "As hulle mekaar kan vind, kan hulle 'n ooreenkoms maak oor hoe om die kwessie van die openbare dimensie bymekaar te bring, tot voordeel van ons almal. In dié opsig het Du Toit gesê, kommentaar van die minister van sport en ontspanning, Tokozile Xasa - wat gou gevra het dat Mallett en Botha opgeskort moes word was nie behulpsaam of verantwoordelik nie. "Die doel is om die samelewing te genees, nie te vernietig nie."
