No lawlessness will be allowed The Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane is concerned about the continued acts of criminality especially in the Ekurhuleni policing precinct following two separate incidents that occurred last week. A shootout took place between suspects and the police at East Rand Mall in Ekurhuleni Saturday, April 21. It is alleged that the police wanted to effect arrest on suspected dangerous that are linked to a murder case. A security officer stationed at the mall was fatally wounded during the incident, while a female victim was hit by a stray bullet and taken to the hospital for medical attention. One suspect was injured in the process, another suspect was arrested while the other three suspects managed to run away. Police recovered a firearm believed to have been used by the suspects at the scene. The police have launched a massive manhunt for the suspects. The suspects are due to appear in court soon to face charges relating to murder, attempted murder and possession of
unlawful firearm. In another incident on Thursday, April 19 at Tsakane, Ekurhuleni, a security vehicle was riddled with bullets during a shooting incident in a suspected taxi violence at Ndaba street near Pholosong Hospital. According to information, two security guards contracted to provide protection to members of the Brakpan Taxi Association had just picked up one member of the association and were driving a marked VW Golf 7 GTI when they were attacked by two motor vehicles, a combi and a sedan. It is alleged the combi drove past the Golf and blocked it from the front while the sedan waited at the back. They started shooting at the occupants of the Golf. One of the security guards died at the scene while the other was rushed to hospital, but he passed away on arrival. The taxi association official was critically injured and fighting for his life in hospital. The motive of the shooting is unknown at this stage and the suspects are still missing while police are investigating cases of murder and attempted murder. “Central to our commitment to create a safe

Oom Gert Maritz het vanjaar op 20 April 104 lewensjare met skitterende gesondheid gevier saam met sy gesin, familie en vriende. Oom Gert is ‘n inwoner van Nigel sedert 1980 en woon op ‘n kleinhoewe net buite Nigel op die Delmas pad. Hy is op Pietersburg gebore op 20 April 1914, waar hy op ‘n familie plaas groot geword het en sy skoolloopbaan in die plaasskool voltooi het. Hy het sy loopbaan in padwerke begin en voltooi sy Spesiale Dienstekorp by die Waterkloof Weermag net voor die 2de wêreldoorlog. Daarna het hy by die Korrektiewe Dienste aangesluit en was in die diens tot en met sy aftrede. Oom Gert was getroud met Suzie Vosloo en uit die huwelik is 3 seuns gebore. Hy is tans tuis by sy seun, Arnold en Alet Maritz op die kleinhoewe op Nigel. Oom Gert se oupa het 105 jaar oud geword en sy pa het op die ouderdom van 97 gesterf. Hy vertel dat dit net genade van die Hemelse Vader is wat mens so kan deurdra met goeie gesondheid en lewenslus. Oom Gert was ‘n kranige skut op sy tyd en het ook tennis en rolbal gespeel. Sy hande het vir niks teruggestaan en vandag rus hy net elke dag lekker uit en geniet sy gesin en die tyd wat nog vir hom geleen word.

Fotograf ie laat jou toe om die wêreld rondom jou vas te vang met die druk van ‘n knoppie. Dis ook ‘n manier om te voel, om aan te raak, om lief te hê. Wat jy op film gevang het, word vir ewig vasgevang ... dit onthou klein dingetjies, lank nadat jy alles vergeet het bekend as ‘n kuns van waarneming. Fotojag bied aan elke deelnemer die geleentheid om binne ‘n sekere hoeveelheid tyd, sekere voorwerpe op beeld vas te lê. Dit is mik en druk sonder enige redigering van die foto, aflaai en inhandig. Buite beoordeelaars beoordeel dan die foto’s en dan word daar tyd verleen om die

Lede het wel maandeliks foto’s met ‘n vooraf bepaalde onderwerp gebring en dan is die foto’s bespreek en kommentaar is dan gelewer deur Joost en Derek wat gesoute fotograwe is. Hulle het aan interklubkompetisies met klubs soos AFO, Springs, Benoni, Modderfontein, Foto 835, Germiston en Alberton deelgeneem. In ongeveer 1972 gaan die klub in ‘n winterslaap. ‘n Tydelike opflikkering vind op ‘n stadium plaas maar die klub kwyn weer. Op 22 Februarie 1983 ontwaak die klub onder leiding van Johannes Steenberg en 23 belangstellendes kom tydens die stigtingsvergadering byeen en Heidelberg Fotografieklub word gebore met die hulp en leiding van Reg & Amy Ansell (Reg was die President van die Fotograf iese Vereniging van Suider Afrika op daardie tydstip). Reg en Amy is sedert dan en nog steeds ons klub se beskermhere. Heidelberg Fotografieklub was geaffilieer met die FVSA en staan dus onder beskerming van FVSA. Klubbyeenkomste word elke maand gehou asook ‘n maandelikse klubkompetisie wat die lede die geleentheid bied om in sterklasse mee te ding en te vorder. Daar was drie afdelings waarin lede kon meeding nl. Monochroom afdrukke, kleur afdrukke en kleurskyfies. Lede is ook bekend gestel aan salonne en aangemoedig om daaraan deel te neem.

Facilities encouraged to register Is your child’s crèche fully equipped to take care of your little one? This is one of the questions parents need to ask themselves when sending their child to an Early Childhood Development (ECD) facility. Registration with the city is one of the indications that the facility you entrust with the care of your child is safe and capable of providing such care. In creating a city f it for children, Ekurhuleni’s social development health practitioners have assisted about 300 funded and unfunded ECD facilities to be properly registered. A registered facility is confirmed by a registration certif icate, which parents must ask to see before they enroll their children. There are two types of registrations, with respective certificates. The first certificate is the ECD partial care facility registration certif icate and the second is the ECD learning programme. The partial care certificate confirms that the registered facility is in a safe and secure environment that is clean and operating in a well looked-after building, with constant adult supervision. The certificate may be a conditional registration for centres that are still in the process of development. Full registration is for facilities that meet all the required norms and standards set by the social development division. The ECD learning programme certificate is for the
programme that is offered by the facility. The City of Ekurhuleni has developed guidelines for all registered ECD facilities to comply with, these include ensuring that: The facility employs properly qualified ECD practitioners or principals; The school menu provides nutritious meals for the different age groups; All children have access to creative play area at their ECD partial care facility as they learn through play; The facility complies with all the by-law requirements set by the City Planning and Health departments; The facility must deliver an approved learning programme. Despite the fact that a facility may have attained certif icates conf irming their registration, regular visits to the facilities are done by social workers and environmental health practitioners to assess whether the facility maintains the norms and standards of a conducive learning environment. However, this can be avoided
by following these three simple steps to register: 1. Inform a social worker at your local Customer Care Centres that you want to register your ECD facility and learning programme; 2. Pass a series of requirements including compliances with applicable municipal by-laws to ensure that your facility provides a secure and healthy environment
for the little ones; 3. Complete the relevant forms and submit them to the Department of Social Development off ice in Germiston at Number 40 Catlin Street, Germiston. Midvaal rated highest The Mayor of Midvaal, Bongani Baloyi and his team were once again rated the highest scoring local municipality in Gauteng regarding its financial stability. Rating’s Afrika’s Municipal Financial Stability Index for 2017 saw Midvaal walk away with a rating of 68/100. This is higher than the average for Gauteng which has a stability score of 30. It is also higher than the national average which sits at 44. The Midvaal municipality has gone from strength to strength, improving the quality of life for its residents. Midvaal has exercised prudent financial governance and continues to be a shining example.

The Gauteng Department of Education MEC Panyaza Lesuf i’s conf irmed the opening of the online application process to avoid the late placement of learners in schools in the province, following this year’s disastrous experience where approximately 58 000 grades 1 and 8 learners were not secured school placement timeously even though they applied online. The early opening of the online registration process is a positive move as it will alleviate pressure from parents of queuing at the application centres at the eleventh hour.
It will give schools ample opportunity to plan and allocate the required resources. The Department must strike a balance between schools facing high enrolment demand and those schools which are standing empty. The Department must kick start a campaign to make parents aware of the online registration process so as to reduce the backlog of unplaced learners at the last minute particularly in areas where parents have little access to mainstream media. We urge parents to register their children as early as possible so that they will have time to prepare for the next academic year.
