Hot festivals for summer!

Primavera Sound in Barcelona is the festival for music lovers. It would be unforgivable to miss it. Throughout the weekend, legends like Neil Young and Ghostface Killah, along with a wide range of international and Spanish groups that made their mark in 2008, will be appearing. It’s held near the centre of Barcelona, so there’ll be time to enjoy the city as well. In the morning, that is.
A festival for the brave and/or lovers of electronic music of all kinds, although each year the range of music and styles gets wider. This year attention will be centred on the return of the androgynous Grace Jones and Fever Ray, and the project from the girl from The Knife. The festival is full of fringe activities like SonarPro, an area set aside for creative multimedia professionals.
In Bilbao, BBK Live takes on a firmer footing after several years of rather unfocused programmes. This year they have managed to bring together sure fire classics like Scotttish group Primal Scream –nobody will leave disappointed– and hot new bands like The Ting Tings and Vetusta Morla, the big surprise on the Spanish music scene last year. The festival that’s improved most.
A classic with a billing covering electronic music, rap and its various forms, and full of great names from the past and now like Carl Craig, Orbital, Vitalic and Tiga. There’s also space for Spanish artistes like Tote King, who’ll be appearing with his band; and for reggae, which will be represented for the first time at this festival thanks to Germany’s Gentleman.
FIB is looking ever more British. The billing is plastered with big names from the UK, such as Franz Ferdinand and Oasis, while still featuring national indie stars like Nacho Vegas and Joe Crepúsculo. You can get over the hangover on the beach at Benicassim, chatting about the details of the night’s programme. Better still, keep quiet and recharge the batteries before returning for the next session.
El Primavera Sound de Barcelona es el festival para melómanos. Sería imperdonable perdérselo. A lo largo del fin de semana, mitos como Neil Young o Ghostface Killah, y un amplio abanico de grupos internacionales y nacionales que han sorprendido en 2008, pasarán por el escenario barcelonés, situado cerca del centro, así que hay tiempo para disfrutar de la ciudad -por la mañana, claro.
El Sónar es para valientes y/o amantes de la electrónica de cualquier tipo, aunque cada año abren más el abanico y tocan más estilos. Este año, el regreso de la andrógina Grace Jones y Fever Ray, o el proyecto de la chica de The Knife, centran la atención de un festival lleno de actividades paralelas, como el SonarPro, espacio reservado para los profesionales de la industria y tecnología de creación multimedia.
En Bilbao, el BBK Live se concreta después de algunas ediciones con unos carteles un poquito dispersos. Este año han logrado juntar a clásicos infalibles, como los escoceses Primal Scream -nadie saldrá decepcionado-, y a grupos revelación como The Ting Tings o Vetusta Morla, la sorpresa del pasado año en la escena musical española. El festival con mejor progresión.
Todo un clásico con un cartel repartido entre la música electrónica, el rap y sus variantes lleno de grandes nombres de ayer y de hoy, como Carl Craig, Orbital, Vitalic o Tiga. También habrá espacio para las propuestas autóctonas, como Tote King, que actuará con banda, o para el reggae, que será representado por primera vez en el festival gracias al alemán Gentleman.
El FIB parece cada vez más británico. El cartel está plagado de grandes nombres de las islas, como Franz Ferdinand u Oasis, pero no faltan estrellas del indie nacional como Nacho Vegas o Joe Crepúsculo. Para pasar la resaca: la playa de Benicassim, donde comentar los pormenores de la noche o, mejor, quedarse callado reponiendo fuerzas antes de volver al recinto.
