CAREERS NEWSLETTER 2018-19

ISSUE 6 – Friday 14 December 2018 We were delighted to accompany one of our Engineering Education Scheme teams on a visit to partner sponsor Unipart. We wish them and our ‘Arup’ group all the best for their residential at the University of Birmingham next week. Meanwhile, we trust everyone enjoys this final issue of the term and encourage pupils to keep looking for opportunities outside the classroom to help stand out.

PLEASE BELIEVE IN YOURSELF… WE DO! Once again, it has been a great pleasure to meet every Fifth Year student over the last couple of weeks and discuss their plans for after GCSEs. What particularly impressed us this year was the exceptional research almost every student had already undertaken, looking not only at Post 16 options, but also the years after. There are some exciting plans and we look forward to helping those develop further. Our role is always to highlight that employers are impressed by dynamic, enthusiastic young people who not only have academic fire, but also great charisma and a keen desire to initiate and enjoy new challenges.

OUTSTANDING TEAMWORK Over 30 Upper Sixth students have contributed to this year’s Wheatleyan magazine as section editors or reporters. Almost a third of the whole year group – a significant statistic. Plaudits should go to Editor Adam Dickinson and Deputy Editor Charlotte Park for not only leading the team so well, but also creating many excellent articles themselves.

As further inspiration, we would urge all pupils to read Eni Aluko’s excellent article* about Ballon d’Or winner Ada Hegerberg who adroitly sidestepped an insulting question from DJ Martin Solveig about whether she could twerk, a question Luka Modric did not face. Aluko highlighted that Hegerberg’s response echoed the skill she shows on the football pitch; her message, primarily sent to young girls around the world, was to believe in their ability, especially when faced with any unexpected challenge. More than any generation, our young pupils have the very real hope that ignorant, outdated attitudes towards gender, race, age and perceived ability really have been exposed and dispelled… or, at worst, if found still to be present, will be roundly challenged and speedily revoked. For more, see: https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2018/dec/06/adahegerberg-ballon-dor-martin-solveig-sexism. *Her commentary on the positive reaction to Raheem Sterling’s exposure of abhorrent racism is highly recommended reading too.

What a superb portfolio item for future competitive interviews! STOP PRESS: Ashley Kabue &Areej Raza have been appointed as 2018-19 editors.

#BABLAKEPUPILSEVERYWHERE – FASHION DESIGNER PRIYA LELE

Priya Lele was a 2005 Bablake Leaver and one of the student journalists who worked on our ‘Stretch’ magazine. Her path to graduation and being touted as a dynamic new designer – one to watch – has taken many turns and her resilience to be successful in such a competitive environment has been remarkable. Her earrings, as reported above on her Instagram page, have been worn recently by supermodel Emily Ratajowski. Well done, Priya! We look forward to hearing of further similar success.

#WORKEXPERIENCE – MORE OUTSTANDING REFERENCES FOR OUR UPPER SIXTH ENGINEERS AND PRODUCT DESIGNERS UNIPART… Ellis Cutler and James King were part of the Engineering Education Scheme team that worked with Unipart’s Senior Planning Engineer Simon Stowe. He kindly wrote the following words about their placement this summer: ‘I was impressed with Ellis’ teamwork and level of commitment throughout. His confidence grew and he offered a robust solution for a problem that we took from concept through to production.’ ‘I found James very enthusiastic, keen to learn, always polite and someone who would ask for help when necessary. He completed all his objectives, delivering a great, detailed final presentation to our management team that clearly demonstrated progress in his knowledge and understanding. It was a pleasure to work with him.’ NATIONAL GRID… Ziggy Bentley’s reference for 2 weeks shadowing National Grid’s Energy Trading team praised ‘his

academic capability, work ethic and ability to build relationships’. Set challenging objectives, he completed necessary research, analysed historic trading behaviour, predicted future patterns and presented findings to key professionals. Proactive, affable and at ease in adult company, he completed all objectives to a level far higher than expected. REACTION ENGINES LTD… Richard Parker (Chief Design Engineer) wrote that Harry Loud demonstrated not only an impressive technical competence beyond his years, particularly in his CAD skills, but also a superb ability to think creatively when faced with difficult technical challenges. He also praised his teamwork and was highly impressed with his extreme level of self-motivation and willingness to take the initiative to achieve his objectives. CARTER ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERS LTD… Senior Mechanical Design Engineer Liam Griffiths wrote a glowing

reference for Kieran Thomas: “He helped me solve several real-world problems relating to mechanical design. Already experienced with CAD modelling, I was impressed by his ability to use problem-solving skills to propose useful design solutions. Eager and enthusiastic, he displayed an obvious interest in engineering, and as he has a natural curiosity about processes used to solve design problems, he was a pleasure to work with.” ARUP… Rajan Vraitch impressed Arup with his work on the EES project and returned for 2 weeks’ experience. Associate Director Tim Armitage wrote: ‘It was a pleasure to have Rajan with us. Clearly interested in connected and autonomous vehicles, he engaged very well with our discussions and demonstrated he was very capable of understanding concepts surrounding a developing area of technology. He quickly negotiated our IT system and showed ability to work unsupervised on a research task. He asked great questions and his desire to learn has been refreshing.’ He completed his project in good time, demonstrating ingenuity and aptitude for engineering.

#18BEFORE18 – 3RD YEAR CHALLENGE We are firm believers pupils should make their options choices based on necessity, strength and interest. Our former pupils are very strong advocates that enjoyment of a subject would be their prime driver in any advice offered. We would now like our 3rd Year pupils to identify 18 Bablake former pupils and their professions. We will collate this information and deliver an assessment of their findings in the New Year. Please email a completed list to mgw@bablake.coventry.sch.uk by Friday 11th January 2019 4pm. TIPS: To discover your 18 former pupils, think carefully about resources identifying them, consider any hashtags used by Bablake to group them, and consider how Google may assist you!
