EDITOR’SNOTES Collaboration Is the Key to Improving Aftermarket/OEM Partnerships ndustry association meetings and conventions are a great way to stay connected or reconnect with colleagues and stay up to date with what’s going in the aftermarket. These events encourage your involvement and, while you’re helping the industry and the association with your attendance and participation, you’re also enhancing your own expertise and experience. The connections the TechShop team makes at these events enhance the magazine and help us bring you the latest information on new equipment and tools. TechShop Associate Publisher Sean Donohue and I recently attended the Equipment and Tool Institute (ETI)’s 2013 ToolTech in San Diego. Each year this event brings more and more people together with the specific goal of improving the relationships between original equipment manufacturers and the aftermarket. They want to make the tools you use every day more efficient and more complete. “Collaboration” was the key word at this year’s ToolTech, and the schedule of events focused on what the members of ETI can do to work with OEMs to try

and solve some of the many issues shops are facing today. The automotive aftermarket continuously and increasingly faces the tough challenges new vehicle technology brings, such as Flash Reprogramming, training and access to information. Independent repair shops are finding it harder than ever to find qualified techs as well as the tools and information needed to complete the necessary repairs and maintenance. While my full ETI report can be found at: http://bit.ly/15zLJPU, here are some highlights from the lively Shop Owner ’s Perspective Panel, which was moderated by Ben Johnson of Mitchell 1. Johnson introduced Randy Begin of Mission Hills Automotive and Cass Street Automotive; Stan Rogers, general manager/partner of Gustafson Brothers; and John Gustafson, president of Gustafson Brothers. PULLING CODES Top EPA Codes

This article documents the code P1A10-Hybrid Powertrain Control Module-Battery Disabled found on a 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid 2.3L. See Photo 1. Code P1A10 involves a possible interlock problem with the system. Our subject vehicle was a former police vehicle purchased at an auction — for $1! — in very poor condition. It does not run or power up, and both cluster displays are blank.

PULLING CODES The vehicle was brought into a local shop where a review of the parameter indicator data (PID) shows per a freeze frame that the interlock circuit was closed at the time of failure. See Figure 1. The battery pack state of charge is 0% and it appears that the vehicle may have been under water for a period of time. See Figure 2. A visual inspection of the battery implies that based on appearance, there may have been water in this area. See Photo 2. It’s interesting to note that Ford has indicated in their service information that this battery is water resistant. Further review of PID data shows no interpretation by the system that any cell failure had occurred. The information provided by Ford Motor Company indicated that the battery state of charge needs to be a minimum of 30% in order to begin a diagnostic game plan. The data does show one more piece to this puzzle: this HV system was in limited operating strategy, the PATS (passive anti-theft system) has also been enabled.

PULLING CODES If the battery reaches a state of charge of 30%, it can be driven. The charge state reached 52.3% and the system appears to be working as designed. A review of the schematic shows that this system has two inertia switches. One is located in the front of the vehicle and the other one is in the rear of the vehicle. We start by checking to see if the two switches have been opened. The inspection shows that both switches are closed. The switches were then checked for proper feed and ground. The front switch showed 12 volts and a good ground, and the rear switch showed 2.24 volts and a good ground. See Photos 3-5. It was quite clear that the voltage was incorrect; the question was, what was causing this incorrect voltage level? It was clear that we would have to work our way with a schematic, which would be our roadmap to possibly finding the fault. Following the schematic, we inspected the wiring, which showed the problem — the main harness for the system was cut clear through (Photos 6 and 7). After the harness was repaired, the vehicle started and ran. A jump-start switch (Photo 8) was depressed so it could be used as a donor to promote the charging of the HV battery. This is achieved per a jump-start control module inside the high voltage traction battery. If the battery reaches a state of charge of 30%, it can be driven. The charge state reached 52.3% and the system appears to be working as designed. I checked with this owner several months later and the vehicle is being used on a daily basis with no signs of adverse operation. This Pulling Codes case is now closed. TS

Think Outside of the Bedliner with Spray-Lining and Coatings When a shop owner hears “sprayed-on bedliners,” he might think, “Nothing new there.” And he would be right, because they’ve been around for quite some time. But there is something new, says Jeff Powell of Spray-Lining and Coatings: that certain sprayed-on coatings jobs have traditionally never been done by service shops. Powell’s point is that if shops could just get out of the thinking that sprayed-on coatings are just for trucks, a whole new world of profit opportunities could open up. “We need to open the eyes of the average shop and let them know this product is not just for things that roll, float or fly,” Powell says. “It’s used on stereo speakers, plow discs, shears that are susceptible to rust, grain chutes, grain bins, hoppers, dump trucks and skid loaders.” How does Spray-Lining and Coatings stand out from the competition? First, their product is free of isocyanates, which are carcinogens and bad for your health. They use recycled polymers from TVs, computers, printers and tires, so they’re doing their part to help the environment. Second, the applicator can decide how soft and rubbery or hard and stiff the coating should be. A stiff coating might be good for slides, chutes, hoppers and dump trucks. If your goal is to slip-proof something, you might go with something rubbery

14 June/July 2013 | TechShop

and soft for walkways, steps, stages and animal trailers. The powders can be a bigger grain for rough items like a dairy barn floor or horse trailer, or very fine for chutes, dumps and hoppers. For the average truck bed, it’s usually a low-profile orange peel. Spray-Lining and Coatings has a different take on marketing, too. When you become a dealer, they build you a customized website designed to target the customers you want — whether they’re pickup truck owners, truck dealers, truck builders, welding shops or farmers. Spray-Lining and Coatings’ dealer locator brings your quote requests, conferencing calls immediately with you as a dealer to answer or schedule jobs. The zone for each dealer is at least 400,000 people. Given that metric, Nevada only has two dealers while Illinois has seven. The training Spray-Lining and Coatings offers is the most comprehensive in the industry and is included in the dealer cost. The first step is certification, which means that the dealer can apply any texture, color or profile vertically onto a car hood or part. The training is included in dealership for first two years at no cost and includes on-site help to tool up and prepare for a big job if needed. *Advertorial courtesy of Spray-Lining and Coatings, spray-lining.com.

CORDLESS TOOLS

1. Cordless Tools Are Not As Powerful As Air Tools This is false for the majority of cordless tool categories. Most cordless tools are just as powerful as air or corded tools. Compare the specs; you might be surprised! Take impact wrenches for example, apples-toapples, some professional cordless tools can match and exceed maximum or break away torque of similar 3/8 or 1/2 air impacts. Check the specs.

2. Batteries Are Batteries What batteries are made of and their construction matters in how they store and deliver power to the attached tool. In the past five years, the cordless tool market has moved from nickel-metal hydride to lithium-ion batteries. Lithium-ion batteries will last significantly longer and offer better performance over nickel-metal hydride packs. Lithium-ion batteries are also lighter and can pack more energy into a smaller package than nickelmetal hydride battery packs. Also, lithium-ion batteries can be cycled more than conventional batteries.

3. More Volts Are Better More is not necessarily better when it comes to volts and certain cordless tools. More volts are needed to power tools like hammer drills and

Andrew Markel Contributing Editor amarkel@babcox.com

16 June/July 2013 | TechShop

CORDLESS TOOLS circular saws, but cordless impacts may not need the volts. What really matters is torque, run time and amp/hours in the battery. Some cheap tools can claim they have 24 volts, but an 18- or 12-volt model may have considerably more torque, runtime and energy capacity. Always check the specs.

4. All Chargers Are the Same False. Some chargers have more computing power than the Apollo lunar lander. Lithium-ion and some nickel-metal hydride chargers measure the resistance, volts and amps of a battery pack. They also can estimate the internal temperature of a battery pack. The computer in the charger will use this infor-

mation to deliver the best possible charge in the least amount of time. It is why chargers are becoming more expensive and why you should only use the manufacturer’s charger or charging system.

5. Battery Packs Just Have Batteries Inside False. Some new lithium-ion battery packs have the charging system regulator inside the pack. Some are even including a fan that operates when the pack is charging or there is a heavy load on the battery. This also means that a charge indicator can be put on the battery.

6. Cordless Tools Take a Long Time To Charge As chargers and batteries have become more intelligent, fast or rapid charges in 30 minutes are now possible. In the past, most batteries took eight to 12 hours to charge.

7. Cordless Tool Batteries Need To Be Conditioned This is false for most new lithiumion batteries. Most manufacturers do not recommend a conditioning regimen. While it is a good idea to fully charge a battery before you use it, it is not required. Some manufacturers even ship the battery fully charged. Most of the battery pack’s conditioning is typically performed by the charger. NiCad and nickel-metal hydride may require conditioning, so always check the manual.

8. It Is Possible To Overcharge a Battery Overnight False. With most modern chargers and batteries, the charging cycle is regulated. When a battery is fully charged, the charger will intelligently keep the battery topped up for Circle #18 for Reader Service

9. A Battery Pack Is Dead When the Tool Stops Working False. The key to getting the greatest life out of a battery pack is to stop when you first notice diminished performance. Using a battery pack until the last electron is drained from the cells can shorten the life of the pack and cause higher than normal temperatures inside the cells.

10. Cordless Tools Will Replace All Air and Corded Tools False. Cordless tools have the main advantage of portability. But, some applications, environments and ergonomic situations are better suited for air or electric tools. Choose wisely, know your requirements. TS

EDITOR’SNOTES

“Every tech should have his own scan tool,” — Stan Rogers, general manager/partner of Gustafson Brothers. Continued from page 5

insights from the guys who throw away the boxes. Johnson asked the panel about the trends they’ve been seeing over the last few years. Begin stated that cars have gotten a lot more reliable. “It’s all about preventive maintenance. Check engine lights are warning us before anything goes critically wrong.” “The trends that we see are that the technicians are undereducated,”

Gustafson said. “The rate of change in technology is so great that technicians are learning at a much slower pace than at which technology is advancing.” He would like it to be possible to get the training through the tooling. Rogers said it won’t be long before every tech will pick up a scan tool on a daily basis because of what the cars require. “The electronics, the diagnostic procedure on the new cars is so much different from what

it was five or 10 years ago ... but the scan tool has to be user-friendly.” His ideas include the need for tools that can grow with the tech — a buildable scan tool that could be customized to the tech’s ability. “There’s a huge window of opportunity for someone to step in and build a tool that’s soup to nuts,” Begin said. “There is so much new technology coming down the line (networking, infotainment systems, lane avoidance, automatic braking systems),” he continued, “that we don’t even understand, that we’re going to need help from the tool. Train us how to use the tool. Don’t even sell us the tool without putting the price of training in it.” When asked what percentage of time they are using diagnostic repair information, Rogers said, “7595% of the time we’re searching for diagnostic information, TSBs, quick fixes…” Gustafson said, “Every car that comes in, you have to check the service information, whether it’s about the type of coolant or weights of oil, whether it’s synthetic or non … In a perfect world, you’d go to a car with your OBD connector, plug it in, and on your workstation at your toolbox you could have the VIN, codes, the vehicle’s current information at your fingertips. And if there’s diagnostic work to do, you can go to that next level.” What are you looking for in the ultimate scan tool? Tell us your thoughts and ideas and we’ll pass them on to ETI.
