A
s a technician, you likely own thousands of dollars worth of tools and equipment, and require tool storage capacity to hold them all, along with carts and accessories to help move those tools around your work area. Here are a few items to consider before making your next tool storage purchase.
Size If you’re shopping for a new tool cabinet or chest, it should be large enough to hold not only the tools you own now, but also any additional tools you may acquire in the years ahead. A technician who is just starting out will probably double or triple his tool collection within five years. Look at the storage space you think you need now, then add 25-50% to come up with a realistic estimate of how much storage space you will actually need a few years from now. Also consider the size of your space and if it will accommodate the cabinet you’re looking at. You may need to choose a configuration that will give you the most utilization for the space available. For many technicians, that means a moderate-sized combination roller cabinet with a separate tool chest on top, and maybe a small portable service cart to hold tools temporarily while working on vehicles.

Before buying any accessories, make sure each addition will save you time, improve the organization of your tools or help you earn more money. Additional storage can be added on with end cabinets, peg boards, hooks, or tool chests or additional compartments mounted on top.
Mobilize Utility carts make it easy to transport all of your tools to any worksite, while still providing a useful work surface. Having quick access to scan tools and a computer is critical in diagnosing vehicle problems. Beyond the drawer space, look for heavy-duty construction that will hold your tools without buckling from their weight. The heavier the load rating of the drawers, the better. Quality toolboxes typically have drawer ratings that range from 80 up to 200 pounds. Also note if drawers can be added or removed, or if shelves can be adjusted and reconfigured to suit your needs.
Organize Customize You also can accessorize a tool cabinet with various types of top chests, side cabinets, risers, vertical storage cabinets, lighting, trim, power outlets and even built-in audio systems. Having the right tools at your finger-

FEATURE STORY sockets in place. Most are designed with magnetic bases, making it easy to secure your tools to any metal surface, including the sides of a toolbox, cart or creeper. One important consideration, if they are going into a drawer, is to make sure the holders will actually fit in the drawers you want them to. Check the height of your drawer. In some cases you won’t be able to store deep sockets in a holder in your most shallow drawers. Also be sure you can easily read the size label, and look for accessories that are oil and fuel resistant. Wrench organizers accommodate a wide variety of wrenches and allow for immediate recognition of a missing wrench. Look for those that are made from soft, flexible material that won’t mar the surface of your wrenches. Watch for wrench organizers that display the sizes no matter which way they are turned in the box. This allows you to place more wrenches in the drawer and still be able to easily spot the one you need. Much like the dividers and organizers used in kitchens, you can finds some great ways to organize your drawer contents. These can range from simple dividers, to wire racks and also adjustable dividers. The type of divider you choose is up to you, but again, the quicker and easier you can find that certain tool means the sooner you get that car out of your bay!
Break Stubborn Loose Half Shafts Steck Manufacturing Company has released the Axle Popper (P/N 71415). Break loose half shafts from transaxle on FWD cars using your air hammer. Axle Popper II is Steck’s air tool version of its original Axle Popper Wedge (71411). Like the wedge, the Axle Popper II is tapered on both ends of the wedge along with a 6” shaft to fit into your air hammer. The base of the Axle Popper II has been increased by 3/8” to give it additional strength while decreasing potential deflection with the increased power of your air hammer. Personalize There used to be a time when most toolboxes and storage cabinets came in standard basic colors, but nowadays you can get tool storage cabinets and chests in almost any color. The quality of the finish on the cabinet is important so it holds up over time. Nothing diminishes the resale value of a toolbox more than rust. Nobody wants to own, let alone buy, an old rusty toolbox. So make sure the manufacturer offers a quality paint job or powder coating. Stainless steel edging on the drawers can help prevent unsightly nicks and dings. You want a cabinet that can be easily cleaned and maintains a like-new appearance. Custom graphics on toolboxes is also a popular trend. You obviously pay extra for graphics or a custom paint job, but it’s your toolbox and you should be able to have it any way you want it. One word of caution, though. If you ding or scratch the fancy graphics or paint job on your tool cabinet, what will it take to fix it? A toolbox also has to be practical for a working technician. It can’t just be a work of art. TS
Rechargeable Light with Extension Pole Provides Up to 3,600 Lumens Streamlight Inc. launched the Portable Scene Light, an industrial-duty, high lumen floodlight that delivers up to 3,600 lumens. Analyzing the Cylinder Pressure Waveform from a Running Engine, Part 3 In Part 1 of this Maximizing Tools series, we discussed an alternative approach to diagnosing an engine using the pressure waveforms from an in-cylinder pressure transducer. Part 2 continued our discussion in more detail, analyzing the Valve Timing and Ignition Timing tabs on the waveforms. In this final installment, we discuss the Inlet (or Intake) and Exhaust tabs. The Inlet (or Intake) Tab The Inlet (or Intake) tab displays a diagram of cylinder fill, depending on the engine speed and load. The height of the graph in Figure 1 represents the amount of gas remaining in the cylinder after the intake valve closed. The colors of the diagram traces reflect the engine load; the load value is being calculated by the vacuum in the cylinder during the intake stroke.

The red trace of the diagram allows us to estimate the influence of all the components of the intake system in filling the cylinder. The red trace is a measure of volumetric efficiency (VE). The higher the trace, the larger the maximum cylinder fill. In most circumstances, this directly relates to the cylinder’s efficiency. Some of the factors that affect the cylinder fill are: variable valve timing, lift, duration and overlap, the intake manifold design and geometry, the maximum cross section of the throttle body, the throttle angle, and the flow restriction of the air filter and the induction system. The traces show the cylinder fill with low rpm or idle to the left and higher rpm to the right. The lower the trace is, the more efficient and economical the engine is operating. The height of the trace depends on variables such as: air/fuel mixture, ignition timing, EGR (exhaust gas recirculation), and any restriction from the exhaust system and power required from the engine. As the air/fuel ratio changes away from optimum, the trace will move higher. The more EGR is used, the higher the trace will be. The more exhaust restriction there is, the

higher the trace will move. As ignition timing changes, so will the trace. And finally, as demand on the engine changes, so will the height of the trace. Power demand can vary due to a number of reasons, even at idle; head lights on/off, air conditioning on/off and so on. Next we will compare the inlet or intake diagram from two engines. These two engines have significant differences in their induction system design. Neither of the engines use turbo or super charging. Figure 2
is an engine equipped with a carburetor and one intake and one exhaust valve. No variable valve timing is utilized on this engine. The intake manifold design has to accomodate fuel as well as air. It can clearly be seen that this engine does not have increased cylinder fill with increased rpm. Also, the trace is only within what is considered the normal band in the 1,200-4,600 rpm range, outside that rpm band the cylinder fill is below. Based on this, it is clear that this is an engine designed to operate in a low rpm range. It should be noted that with the increase in rpm, the color of the diagram gradually goes from warm to cold. This is especially pronounced after 4,500 rpm. This is because the induction system represents a restriction in this rpm range and the cylinder fill is decreasing. Figure 3 is from an engine with a different design. This engine is equipped with variable valve timing and is using four valves per cylinder: two intake and two exhaust valves. The induction system is designed very differently, the engine uses port fuel injection and the intake manifold is designed for air only. The red trace in Figure 3 clearly shows that this engine has much better cylinder fill throughout the rpm range compared to the engine in Figure 2. This engine is designed to operate well at higher rpm. Even though the engine is designed for higher rpm, the cylinder fill at low rpm is comparable to the diagram from the low rpm engine. The color of the diagram is hotter than in the previous example, and starts to change toward warm only after 5,500 rpm. This means that the induction system is causing little or no resistance to air flow into the cylinder. Also noticeable is that the cylinder filling of this engine at rpm higher than 4,000 significantly exceeds 100%. This is achieved without forced air injection. The overunity cylinder fill is achieved through the use of variable valve timing and a tuned induction system. The intake valve is left open for some degrees of crankshaft rotation after BDC on the intake stroke. The velocity of the incoming air is high and will continue to fill the cylinder even after the piston has passed BDC, thus creating a slight over pressure in the cylinder.

MAXIMIZING TOOLS effect the exhaust system back pressure has on the piston movement. If the peak back pressure occurs when the piston is close to TDC, the effect of the back pressure is minimal. This is because the piston speed is minimal at that moment. On the other hand, if the peak back pressure occurs when the piston is approximately midway through the stroke, the effect is much more pronounced. For this reason, the actual exhaust system design does not have as much of an effect on the trace as does unintended restrictions. Because of the dynamic manner in which the restriction is measured and calculated, smaller restrictions can be detected before they significantly affect the engine performance. amount of work spent on expelling the exhaust gases from the engine. Figure 4 shows a diagram taken from an engine with normal exhaust system restriction. The lower the trace, the less exhaust restriction exists. The sloping red line signifies the allowable exhaust restriction. This trace was determined empiricially by collecting data from several engines, some in good working order, some not. Figure 5 shows what the trace will look like with a severe exhaust restriction. In this case, it is a plugged catalytic converter. The exhaust restriction could also be caused by insufficient exhaust valve lift or other issues. The diagrams in this tab are calculated based on the
Procedure for Recording the Waveforms When recording the cylinder pressure graphs, it is desirable to follow a sequence that will allow the maximum amount of information to be obtained in the shortest amount of time. It is recommended to start recording when the engine is idling. After 3-5 seconds, slowly increase the speed, then allow the engine to fall back to idle. After the idle speed has stabilized again, quickly perform a snap throttle to wide open throttle. As soon as maximum rpm is reached, turn off the ignition while leaving the throttle open. Common Causes of Misfire Codes A flashing check engine light and a P0301 to P0312 diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is a surefire indication that one or more cylinders are misfiring. Occasional misfires may pass unnoticed, but a steady misfire is hard to miss. The engine usually feels rough, lacks power and uses more gas than usual. Sometimes a misfire may feel like a vibration. A misfire also will cause a huge increase in hydrocarbon (HC) emissions, which can cause a vehicle to fail an emissions test. Misfires that turn on the check engine light and log a cylinder-specific fault code are the easiest to diagnose. The OBD II system will identify the cylinder(s) that are not contributing their normal dose of power
and set a code that corresponds to the firing order. A P0303 code, for example, would tell you that the No. 3 cylinder is misfiring. To find cylinder No. 3, refer to a diagram of the engine’s firing order or look for markings on the intake manifold, spark plug wires or ignition coils (if the engine has a coilon-plug ignition system). When you have a misfire code for a particular cylinder, you can focus on one of three things: an ignition problem, a fuel injector problem or a compression problem.
1. WORN SPARK PLUGS Every time a spark plug fires, the spark burns a few molecules of metal off the plug’s electrodes. Over time, this eats away the electrodes and rounds off their sharp edges. The erosion gradually increases the gap between the electrodes, which, in turn, increases the firing voltage required to generate a spark. Eventually, the ignition system reaches a point where it fails to produce enough voltage and the plug misfires.

PULLING CODES 2. BAD SPARK PLUG WIRES Bad spark plug wires are another common cause of misfires. After about 50,000 miles, OEM carbon-core ignition wires develop too much internal resistance, which weakens the spark and increases the risk of misfire. High-mileage plug wires also can develop cracks that leak current to ground or to other wires, shorting the spark before it can reach the plug. Inspect the wires closely and measure their resistance. Replace any wires that are worn, damaged, do not fit properly or have resistance that exceeds specifications. If more than one plug wire is bad, replace the entire set.

3. WEAK FUEL INJECTOR A “lean misfire” can occur if there is not enough fuel in the combustion chamber. Causes of a lean misfire that affect only one cylinder include a dirty fuel injector, an open or shorted fuel injector, or a problem in the fuel injector driver circuit (wiring or PCM). Compression problems that may cause a misfire include a burned exhaust valve, bent intake or exhaust valve, or leaky head gasket.

5. VACUUM LEAK A vacuum leak into the intake port of the cylinder in question can cause a lack of fuel. Vacuum leaks on individual cylinders commonly occur around intake port gaskets or vacuum hose connections. Insufficient valve lash, a broken piston ring or a leaking cylinder head gasket can cause a partial loss of compression.
5 4. LEAKING FUEL INJECTOR An individual cylinder with a rich fuel mixture is not as common as a lean mixture, but it can occur if the fuel injector leaks. A more common condition would be a rich mixture in all cylinders caused by 1) a dead oxygen or coolant sensor that prevents the computer from going into a closed loop, or 2) a faulty fuel pressure regulator or plugged fuel return line that’s routing too much pressure to the injectors. Something else to look at in the spark burn line is the amount of “hash” it contains. A good cylinder will show a relatively clean line with little hash. A lot of

6 Although carbon tracking is usually caused by oil, dirt or moisture creating a path to ground over the spark plug insulator, a severely eroded spark plug electrode will increase firing voltages to the point that the spark will seek the point of least resistance, which is either through the spark plug boot or down the insulator to the metal shell. If a carbon track is found on a spark plug, an identical track will be found
inside the spark plug boot. If the boot is serviced as a replacement part separate from the coil, the boots should be replaced at the same intervals as the spark plugs. If the boot is available only with the coil assembly, the spark plugs should be replaced at the recommended intervals and care should be taken not to contaminate the boot or insulator with dirt or oil.
7. NO VOLTAGE AT THE COIL If battery voltage exists and a COP assembly is suspected of causing an intermittent cylinder misfire, the quickest diagnostic procedure is to switch the coil from cylinder to cylinder. If the misfire follows the suspected coil, the failure will lie with the coil rather than the spark plug or PCM’s coil driver. An individual coil driver in the PCM will rarely fail. TS

CLAMP-ON, SNAP-IN Most TPMS sensors are held in with just a screw or a nut, and if not assembled or torqued properly, there could be serious ramifications. Carelessness can result in a broken sensor or even a customer stranded with a flat tire.
The torque tools required to install TPMS sensors include: • Torque wrench that measures torque in inchpounds; • Preset torque calibrated T10 screwdriver; and • Preset valve stem torque tool.
Clamp-on Sensors Anytime a clamp-on TPMS sensor is reused or replaced on a wheel, it is necessary to install new seals and valve stem nuts to ensure proper sealing around the sensor valve stem. 1. Wipe the area clean around the sensor/valve stem mounting hole in the wheel. Make sure the surface of the wheel is not damaged. Pieces of the old seal can cause a slow leak. Do not lubricate or use a sealant in this area — this can change the

torque values and cause you to snap the stem. 2. If the valve core is removed, it must be replaced with a new valve core in order to avoid galvanic corrosion, which may cause the valve core to fail. 3. Insert the sensor through the wheel, keeping pressure against the rear of the metal valve stem. Mounting the sensor upside down can cause relearn and transmission problems. The two grommets seal the sensor and nut to the wheel. The instant the nut is torqued, the seal/grommet starts to take on the shape of the surfaces it is sealing against. If the seal
is reused, it could cause a slow leak. Never reuse nuts. The nut is made of a softer metal than the stem, so it will be damaged — and not the sensor — if it is overtightened. The material of choice is typically aluminum. If the nut is overtightened, it will develop hairline cracks. The new nut may have coatings on the threads that prevent corrosion and leaks. Before tightening the sensor nut, push downward on the sensor housing in an attempt to make it flush with the interior contour of the wheel. Some clampon stems have the ability to change the angle of the sensor by loosening a fastener that holds the sensor on the stem. Other sensors should assume the correct position when the nut is torqued. 4. While holding the sensor in position, tighten the sensor nut with a torque wrench. Typical torque values for the base nuts on a TPMS valve stem range from as low as 35 in.-lbs. of torque to as much as 80 in.-lbs., depending on the sensor. Also, a replacement sensor may have a different torque value than the other sensors. Overtorquing the sensor nut by as

damage the nut or valve stem, or fracture the sensor body.

Snap-in sensors can look like regular rubber valve stems, but the molded rubber on the snap-in valve stem does not reach the threads and there is a tapered shoulder. These valves have longer caps than non-TPMS valve stems. Behind the stem is a mounting point for a self-tapping screw that holds the sensor to the stem. There are two installation methods depending on the type of snap-in valve stem you are installing. Always check the instructions or the manufacturer’s recommendation. The first method is installing the valve stem in the rim and then attaching the sensor. The second method is to attach the sensor to the valve stem and then insert it into the wheel. Why? On some stems, the sensor could come in contact with the wheel as the stem is pulled with the sensor attached. When attaching a new valve to the sensor body, always use a preset torque screwdriver with the correct torx head or hex nut. Most tool suppliers package two preset torque drivers in a set. Due to different manufacturers, the torque settings may differ. The screw is self-tapping and can only be used once, and the same also applies to the stem. When tightening the screw, be mindful of stress on the sensor and the alignment of the sensor. Start the screw for the first couple of threads and make sure the sensor and stem are aligned. When performing the final tightening sequence, stop when the tool clicks indicate that the proper torque has been reached. Before installing the valve stem, it is acceptable to lubricate the seating surfaces with an approved tire lubricant. Lubricating the stem helps with the alignment of the sensor on the flats. When using a tire valve stem installation tool, pull the valve stem straight through the valve hole and not at an angle. Some valve stems have a tab on the body of the valve that can help in the alignment of the sensor. The rubber bulb of the valve should be resting against the rim and the sensor body should not be touching the rim for most applications. TS

Snap-on 3/8 Ratchet: This tool by far has made me more money throughout my career than any other. I use it on just about every job. ATS Lab Scope: Doing a great deal of diagnostics as I do, this is by far the most powerful labscope I have ever used. The things this tool can do are amazing. Launch X431 Scan Tool: I have several scan tools at my place of business ranging from generic to OEM tools. With the costs of updates and initial investment being a concern for a small shop like mine, I have come to rely heavily on this tool for my European needs. I am very impressed with its abilities to do tasks ranging from small data info and bi-directional tests all the way up to coding several modules found on various European vehicles.

Generic Code Reader: Out of all the scan tools I own, I find myself using a generic code reader and scan tool the most often. While it can’t do bi-directional testing and it won’t work with modules other than the PCM, I am able to quickly diagnose 90% of check engine light issues that come through my shop using a tool like this. OTC has launched the 3200 Smart Battery Tester, offering nearinstant battery, charging and starting system test results with a technician’s iOS or Android device. The tester clips onto a battery’s terminals and provides battery voltage and cold cranking amps (CCA) on-screen, and also displays a QR code. Using the OTC 3200 app and a smart device with a rear-facing camera, users can read the QR code to view a full report including battery, charging system and starting system health. The tester’s on-screen display indicates when to start the vehicle to measure starting system draw and charging system status.

Heavy Duty-Ratchet Features 17-Tooth Pawl Instead of using a double-pawl inside, the Beta Tools of Italy 920/55 Reversible Ratchet uses a solid, one-piece pawl with 17 teeth on it.
