Editor’s Note “Short Black” is actually an Australian idiom for espresso. It is commonly used through the Land Down Under and it is as frequent as its sister equivalent – the “Flat White” (espresso with milk). Coffee seems to be one of those things that is a part of our every day lives, but that we rarely associate with art and creativity – it’s more something we associate with keep us awake so we can try to be creative. As the average designer would know, coffee (and depending on your country of residence, also a cigarette) is the one thing you can always rely on to get you through the tight deadlines and nagging directors. It’s the one thing most of us look forward to every morning on a work day, or every lazy, Sunday afternoon with friends or a loved one. It’s the one thing that got us through last month’s computer crisis! And because the July issue came out so late and we always focus on quality (not quantity) in our work, we decided that August would be perfect for a quick fix of creativity. Hence the “Short Black” issue. It’s like that quick swig on your way to work, between classes, or in the middle of briefs. It’s the creative energy booster we all crave. So even though the August issue is noticeably shorter than our usual ones, it is by no means less sweeter. Take a dive through the wonderful world of coffee art and be inspired by what others have done with their coffees. We have also included some feature artists who have taken their love of coffee to a completely new level, creating their masterpieces from this wonderful beverage. And before I go, let me say that we have some great stuff lined up for you in the coming months – lots of inspiration, competitions and creativity! But until then, darling readers and friends, start flipping through these pages (especially if you’ve got a creative brief to answer to) because we guarantee you’ll be wired by the time you’re done with it. Until next time: Imagine. Believe. Create. Achieve. Baki

Coffee? – By B Coffee? I ask to mask my desire A seemingly innocent request You comply Our intentions are obvious We’re not going to lie

4.

Coffee? I ask to make you mine A subtle scent of morning You are divine The caffeine heats my yearning For our bodies to entwine Coffee? I delicately trace the tip Of the porcelain mug With my lips Like an aphrodisiac drug From my finger I softly lick Coffee? We relish in the aromatic delight Sipping our bitter, creamy drink Flat white We start to think Coffee? Mine or yours? Tonight?

“Over second and third cups flow matters of high finance, high state, common gossip and low comedy. [Coffee] is a social binder, a warmer of tongues, a soberer of minds, a stimulant of wit, a foiler of sleep if you want it so. From roadside mugs to the classic demi-tasse, it is the perfect democrat. - Unknown

64 by Rio Coffee @ The Dieline Australia based Voice creates a premium, contemporary design for Rio Coffee. “Rio Coffee has been hand roasting Australia’s favourite Coffees since 1964, with 14 varieties already in their portfolio. The aim was to create a premium coffee product that reinforced Rio Coffee’s longevity in the coffee industry and evoking a sense of nostalgia by looking back at the birth of the brand. The aim was to create a premium, contemporary solution whilst maintaining a style reminiscent of the 60s. The design is influenced the by colours and patterns of the 60s. It uses simple geometric shapes and colours to represent the rising aroma and steam from a cup of coffee. Tin was chosen to package the coffee as to reinforce its connection to the past as well as underpin its premium status.” - Andrew Gibbs for The Dieline

Andrew Saur Coffee Artist ™ University of Minnesota Duluth Degree in Graphic Design Departmental Honors Magna cum laude 1999 Andy’s favorite works are the ones that reflect his Scandinavian heritage. For almost each exhibition, Andy would like to paint a Viking ship, Nordic symbols, or other images in reference to Scandinavia. His favorite painting from this genre is “Nordic Storm of Fury” which depicts a wind god blowing into the sail of a Viking ship. Another idea that piques Andy’s interest is the little events in the daily life. Leaves, coffee cups, mosquito bites and ants have all been subjects of his paintings. He correlates the everyday occurrences with the coffee color, being a sepia tone, to old photos and memories. That strong connection creates a warm mood. Aside from being a graphic designer, Andy likes to carve wooden figures out of branches, take photos of his Boston Terrier, Gidget, and read Nordic mythology. His ultimate goal is to travel the world and paint his experiences, then come back to his gallery to showcase the works.

Likewise Coffee @ The Dieline “Invented a brand of coffee and the packaging. It’s called Likewise because I liked the idea of connecting with other people over a cup of coffee. Historically, coffee is experienced with others and ideas are formed then discussed. The form of the bag is influenced by the large Dixie Crystals bag of sugar, with the stitching at the top. The idea being that the coffee roaster would have a coffee shop in the front, sealing the bags for sale right after roasted, but also selling the beans right in the shop in the customer’s own tin. The identity is continued throughout all of these eclectic applications by a border and the logotype.”

Karen has been a creator since childhood, but a portrait class at age 14 unexpectedly propelled her into an art career. Her love for coffee was born in the late Kaldi’s Coffeehouse in New Orleans, where she would go everyday to sketch her fellow French Quarter locals while sipping a black coffee with a dash of nutmeg on top. After moving back home to Tulsa, Oklahoma, she was introduced to the joys of top-quality espresso at Nordaggio’s Coffee, and finally the link between coffee and art connected when she began painting with it. Soon she learned the art of espresso itself by becoming a barista, though art is now her full-time job. Painting in coffee is a refreshing break from Karen’s work in oils, watercolor, and pencil.
