Publisher & Editor’s Letter

Bryan & Bianca Zammit First and foremost we would like to share with our readers the arrival of our newest edition to our family Phoebe Ann Zammit, born in just 20 minutes on 20th August at 6:40am. We would like to thank the staff at Maternity Ward - St. Bernard’s Hospital, especially to our midwife Lourdes, who made the labour very comfortable, and for trusting her instincts.

COVER MODEL : Rosie Mac

We would also like to thank our families and friends for being there and for your visits to the hospital and for all your beautiful gifts for Phoebe. She is one lucky baby to have so many aunties and uncles. This month in the magazine, we have unfolded the ‘Chinese Zodiac Signs’ and their meanings. The Chinese zodiac signs are determined by the lunar year in which you were born. The Chinese believe the animal ruling one’s birth year has a profound influence on personality, and destiny. The saying is: “This animal hides in your heart.” Unlike Western astrology, it does not look like the heavenly constellations or planets to predict one’s destiny. Rather, Chinese astrology deals with divining sciences of wuxing or the five elements (earth, fire, water, metal, wood), Yin and Yang, Chi, and the cycles of time. Legend has it

that inception of the Chinese zodiac signs began when the Buddha beckoned all the animals to bid him farewell before his departure from the Earth. Only twelve arrived at his summoning, and so those were given a place of honour in a year being named after each. You can determine your animal sign by referring to the year you were born on page 73. Onto lifestyle and work, if you are looking for the most effective ways to become a better team manager, we can help you. It’s not easy to be a good team manager since you have more responsibilities and you should always inspire and encourage your team to work better. Your team’s performance depends mostly on you. Leading a team isn’t as difficult as you may think, though. The main rule to follow is to avoid being too bossy and too friendly. You need to be a great professional and a role model for your colleagues. Turn to pages 36 for ‘5 Ways to Become a Better Team Manager at Work’ This month’s interview we caught up with the Chief Minister – The Hon Fabian Picardo QC. Mr Picardo was elected as Chief Minister in December 2011. Eight months earlier, he had taken over the leadership of the Gibraltar Socialist Labour Party, replacing long-term leader Joe Bossano. Mr Picardo was born in Gibraltar and studied law at Oxford University. After graduating from Oxford, he attended the Inns of Court School of Law at Gray’s Inn in London. Read our exclusive interview with Mr Picardo in our centre pages ‘Totally Exposed’. We hope you enjoy this issue as much as we did producing it. We always look forward to bringing you the best in fashion, beauty, health, house & home, local entertainment, culture and more. Enjoy this issue and the start of your autumn season! Until the next issue… B&B

SUPER-CHIC SANDALS Trends come and go, but they always make a huge comeback. Case in point: the gladiator sandals. Though known to be a summer (and music festival!) staple, the strappy footwear is so back in the fashion scene, offering a wide selection of chic variations from texture, colour, and height. We’ve even spotted a number of knee-grazing pairs and believe us, they can look great with tailored dresses and skirts. So whether you prefer it low, mid-length, or knee-high, see which standout pair suits you best.

For a footwear brand whose calling card colour is red, corresponding lips and nails are the obvious choices for a move into beauty. Christian Louboutin nail polish came last year, and now a range of lipsticks are joining the lineup this month. “When a woman carries a handbag, we look at her shoulders. When she slips on a pair of heels, we observe her walk. If she applies lacquer to her nails, we admire her hands,” said Louboutin in a statement. “An object that embellishes the lips (the beacon of sensuality and organ of communication) has to be fairly amazing. The object should inspire a beautiful gesture.” Like the nail polishes before them, the lipsticks are designed as objects of desire as much as they are colour cosmetics with £60 price tags to match - in vial-like golden packaging with ribbon ties. The 38 colours are available as Silky Satin, Velvet Matte and Sheer Voile finishes, including a classic crimson, of course.

Want to update your look but don’t feel like going for a drastic cut or new hair colour? Get inspired by these side-parting hairstyles. A side-parting is youthful, flattering and easy to wear. An instant style shake-up, side-parting hairstyles will breathe new life into an old cut.

It’s the ultimate style update, as whatever you hair length or type, you can incorporate this new style into your look. A side-parting hairstyle will work on curly locks, poker straight tresses and will add a new dimension to old school waves, Bardot-style updos and short bobs. And the best part is that you don’t need a trip to the salon or to buy any new hair care products to achieve this stylish look. There’s also no risk of ending up with a look you hate for weeks (we’ve all had terrible haircuts that take ages to grow out) – with side-parting hairstyles, you can afford to experiment without any dire consequences.

Add a touch of glamour to your locks by adding a deep side-parting. Take the hair from near the crown and pull into a sideparting from here, giving a natural-looking finish and a flattering fringe effect.

Old Hollywood curls are a great evening option for any hair type. Parting your tresses on the side is most flattering past 40 - a centre-parting with these dramatic waves will be ageing.

Whereas a centre-parting can make hair look flat and lifeless, a side-parting will lift your locks and give the illusion of thicker hair. Build extra body with thickening lotion for long-lasting volume and strength.

A short bob will be much improved by a side-parting. Keep it sleek and straight to give a retro vibe to your already chic style.

Not sure how to find the best look for you? For a simple side-parting style that’s both low maintenance and flattering, simply trace an imaginary line up from the inner edge of one of your eyes and then part your hair at that point. It’s easy! If you want more of a polished look, style your hair when it’s when to get a neater parting and use a bit of product to keep your tresses smooth. Voila – instant glamour! Try a side-parting hairstyle and see how much more youthful, thick and full your hair appears - this quick and easy style change will instantly knock 5 years off anyone who tries it.

The ultimate in high glamour, this supersleek hairstyle is our go-to look for any big event. The deep side-parting gives the illusion of thicker, fuller hair and creates a sexy side-fringe that will complement anyone, of any age.

A side-parting doesn’t have to be structured and part of a ‘done’ look. Give your hair a relaxed edge with this up and down style. Pulling the top section back is another way to give your style an instant makeover.

Lived in hair is perfect for summer, especially when you are on holiday. Give your tresses a sexy Bardot-style makeover with a deep side parting, some undone curls and teased volume.

An easy way to mix-up your style at any age is to change your parting. Flip the front section of your bob over to one side, for a directional take on this classic cut.

Pull your tresses into a chic low pony with a side-parting twist. Tease hair up to add volume and flatter your face shape and features - whatever your age.

Give your short bob a new lease of life with a deep-set side-parting. Pull the hair to one side all the way to the crown for a statement style that will work for every day.

If you have naturally straight hair, an unforgiving centre-parting is not only ageing, but will remove any sense of style from your chosen cut. Instead, move your parting to one side, going as deep as you dare - we recommend to stay in line with the eyebrow arch for a flattering look at any age.

Naturally curly ladies so often make the mistake of parting their hair in the middle. An off-centre or side-parting will give new depth to your locks and a youthful edge to your features. Try tipping your head upside down and finding your new parting with your fingers - this way, your hair will part naturally and look less ‘done’.

If you’re wearing your tresses curly, make sure your side-parting is in keeping with your relaxed style and resist the urge to set it in a straight line. Instead, using a comb, part the hair from the centre to the eyebrow arch and then back towards the centre again. BMAG 31

“The story of Gibraltar is one of working people working hard to give their children better chances in life. I am the product of that upbringing. It is what my wife Justine and I try every day to do for Sebastian and Oliver. My father, Manolo, was born during the First World War, in 1917, and grew up to work as a porter at the Rock Hotel right up to the Second World War when - like most able-bodied men he volunteered for the Gibraltar Defence Force. My Mum, Magda, helped to establish the Gibraltar Women’s Association; although back then it went by the name of the Housewives’ Association. My parents both worked very hard indeed to enable me to become a professional; and I won’t ever allow anything to go to my head. I will never think myself better than any other worker or anything other than a worker, especially as Chief Minister. ‎In my job, I am clear that I am elected to serve everyone else. I work for everyone else, not the other way round. Actually, I think that it’s the unsung heroes of Gibraltar who make things work. Those who wake up earlier than they might want to and go to their jobs day in day out to make an honest living. The people who you never really hear about in the headlines. Those are the men and women who really make Gibraltar tick. That is why I thank everyone for their work when I announce the excellent performance of our economy in the Budget. It’s the work of all of us together that counts and makes us stronger.

When I was a bit older I thought I’d fly planes for a living as a commercial airlines pilot but my lack of 20/20 vision did for that. Then, one day in Bayside I was trying to be clever and my teacher replied coolly ‘if you want to argue, you might as well charge for it and become a lawyer but don’t argue with me’. Thanks Mr Danino, I never really looked back after that. So, amongst all the usual teenage antics and with a poster of Ian Rush (my Liverpool FC hero) on my bedroom wall for inspiration, I worked hard enough at school to get into Oxford University. In 1990 I received a scholarship from the Government of Gibraltar that made it possible for me to study in the UK, and for which I will be forever grateful. I strongly believe that access to higher education is a right, not a privilege, and that everyone who wants to go to University and has worked hard to get in should have an equal opportunity to do so. That’s why mandatory scholarships for both undergraduate and postgraduate studies were a manifesto commitment of mine, and a priority for my Government when I was elected Chief Minister.

I grew up as a normal Gibraltarian boy, from a normal working class Gibraltarian family: I went to St Bernard’s and then Sacred Heart School, I fought with my brother and I played the piano (badly). I am so proud that we are now opening a new complex for these two schools that were not in a fit state for our nation’s children! People sometimes think that I’ve always wanted to become a politician, but that’s not actually the whole story. My family was quite religious and as a child I was an altar boy, so when people used to ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I said I wanted to be a priest… until I actually grew up enough to realise what the consequences of that would be! BMAG 39

Creating a better future for our children and grandchildren is what this is all about, and so I’m proud and excited about the opening of our very own University of Gibraltar this September. Those who want to go to the UK will still nonetheless have the full funding to do so. It’s about giving young people a choice and making sure that their dreams become their realities, in the same way as mine have. After graduating with my degree in Jurisprudence (a posh name for “law”) and being called to the Bar in 1994, I returned home to Gibraltar and joined a local law firm, Hassans, of which I am now proud to be able to call myself a non-practicing Partner. Some of the greatest achievements of my career were representing Gibraltar in front of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council and at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. At the time I was a junior lawyer in the team, working with more senior lawyers who I am delighted to call my friends, carrying their bags and typing their arguments for them. As a young man I always saw the legal profession as one of the safeguards of the rule of law and the rights of individual citizens against the state. In particular, I was aware of lawyers locally who helped working class people and who didn’t charge them. I am delighted to have become a partner in such a man’s firm, that man being ‘the Father of the Gibraltarians’, Sir Joshua Hassan QC and the engine of that firm, James Levy QC CBE. It was also whilst I was at working at Hassans that I met Justine, a fellow lawyer who, one day in January 2011, somehow agreed to marry me when I got down on one knee at the top of the Rock in my tracksuit! If I had to pick a year that changed my life the most, well, that’s easy: it is 2011. In that one year I proposed and got married to Justine, I was elected leader of the GSLP, Justine became pregnant with Sebastian, and the people of Gibraltar chose me as their next Chief Minister. Suddenly I had a lot of big shoes to fill. All at once I had to become a good husband to Justine and prepare to be father to Sebastian, I had to follow the legendary and inimitable Joe Bossano as leader of the GSLP, and I succeeded the distinguished Sir Peter Caruana QC as Chief Minster. I was excited and terrified at the same time, but I still think that’s a pretty good year in anyone’s book. A lot has happened in the four years since then, and sometimes it can be easy to lose sight of just how far we’ve come in what is really quite a short time. I am confident that Gibraltar is more BMAG 40

secure and prosperous now than it was then. Especially when compared to the rest of Europe at the moment, the economy is performing well and we are all seeing the benefits of that. Some of you may be preparing move in to their new affordable homes, and I’d like to extend my congratulations and best wishes to any first-time buyers in particular. The £1.1 billion investment in the Blue Water Project will see the East side of the Rock completely change over the next five years, with a superyacht marina bringing new life and vitality to the area, and the affordable housing scheme putting Gibraltarians at the heart of it all. After all, Gibraltar is our home and it’s up to us to make it the best one possible to hand down to our children and grandchildren. One thing that was very obviously absent in 2011 was a safe place for kids to play and for families to enjoy year-round … since last summer the Commonwealth Park has become this green space in the heart of town, also playing host to fantastic free events like the World Music Festival and the excellent Cinema in the Park. Soon there will be a state-of-the-art small boats marina nearby and many locals will be able to realise their dreams of owning their own boat as there will finally be somewhere safe and affordable to berth it. Not forgetting the incredible Gibraltar International Music Festival, which is one of the many highlights of the year for my family as well as many others, and which puts Gibraltar on the map whilst bringing the biggest names in international entertainment to the Rock. This what hard work and a vision can do: together we are making our home into dynamic, vibrant community in which we all enjoy the standard of living that we deserve. We have changed Gibraltar in these ways and I think you will agree we can be proud of these changes. I got into politics as a young man because I believe in protecting the Gibraltar that I grew up in and making it stronger, improving the quality of life of hard working Gibraltarians, and keeping Gibraltar British as a guarantee for our future in terms of education, the rule of law and the quality of our democracy. I can’t lie and say that it isn’t hard work and that it isn’t stressful. In fact, the best advice I ever got was ‘don’t go into politics’… that was given to me by Gibraltar’s longest serving Chief Minister, Sir Joshua Hassan! But the best part about being Chief Minister is that when someone comes to me with a genuine problem, I can actually step in and change that. That’s the job, and it comes with a lot of responsibility to do it right. A Chief Minister has a duty to his country and to the people who elected him, to change things for the better: and that is exactly what I believe I have done and - with your support - intend to continue doing!” BMAG 41

Gallery walls should be full of interesting prints and funny family photos but not everything in your display must be framed and matted. A small mirror can make a world of difference when you’re looking for that one piece to pull everything together.

Are you hemming and hawing over that empty wall in your home? Don’t put together another gallery wall. Think outside of the frame and find yourself a large mirror to fill the space. It will make the room look bigger and brighter than the rest of your home.

If the space above your sink is window-less, grab some light from other places in the room with a mirror! Whether it’s has frilly etchings or clean edges, it will make it easier to have a conversation with the guests sitting behind you.

Bathrooms can be tricky things to decorate so it can be wise to start with your bathroom mirrors. Don’t settle for the cheapest, plainest reflective surface you can find. Go hunting and get yourself a big pair of antique beauties that will steal the light and the show in your bathroom.

Many people with high ceilings are afraid to hang much of anything because all that space can seem so daunting. It’s a good thing that mirrors come in such large sizes. Whether you buy one that stretches from floor to ceiling or you hoist an already large mirror onto a credenza, they make a simple solution to filling the empty corners.

Looking to give your kitchen a serious makeover? Look no further. Replace your tiled backsplash (or blank wall) with beautiful reflective mirrors. They promise to add tons of light to your space and be easy to clean when they get splattered. Genius? Absolutely. BMAG 51

Who says gallery walls are only for prints and photos? Start collecting all the small ornate mirrors you can find because you’re going to want to create this gallery of mirrors in your own home. You can hang them in your bathroom or in your hallway or even in your bedroom. Just spray paint the frames the same colour and you’re good to go!

Mirrors can go outside too, especially when you have a small backyard area, hanging a mirror on a fence or on the side of your home or even nailing it to tree can be a great way to create the illusion of lots of space. BMAG 52

You’ve probably seen the mirrored furniture around, but it’s a great trend. All these pieces make such a unique look for any space you put them. Maybe you can only afford a side table or maybe you can buy the dresser. Either way, any small piece of mirrored furniture will make a big impact on the style of your room.

If you are dying to have that large mirror but just don’t have the funds for it this month, DIY it. That’s right. Buy small compact mirrors and glue them together to create a large mirror that is an art piece as well.
