Hi everyone, spring is in the air again and we have to say it’s our favourite time of the year, not too hot and not too cold. The flowers all start to bloom and the fresh smell of cut grass and the birds singing let’s us all know that we are in a wonderful season. Another great reason for March is Mother’s Day, where would we be without our mothers?

MARCH 2015

The origin of Mother’s Day goes back to the era of ancient Greek and Romans. But the roots of Mother’s Day history can also be traced in the UK, where a Mothering Sunday was celebrated much before the festival saw the light of the day in US. However, the celebration of the festival as it is seen today is a recent phenomenon and not even a hundred years old. Thanks to the hard work of the pioneering women of their times, Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis that the day came into existence. Today the festival of Mother’s Day is celebrated across the world (though on different dates) and is a hugely popular affair. Millions of people across the globe take the day as an opportunity to honour their mothers, thank them for their efforts in giving them life, raising them and being their constant support and well wisher. Back to our March issue, this month we caught up with the Minister for Financial Services & Gaming, Albert Isola. Albert comes from a traditional family of lawyers, with businesses in Gibraltar since 1892. He studied at Stonyhurst College, Lancashire, between 1973 and 1980 and studied law at Kingston University (1980–1983). He was admitted to the Bar in 1985 in England and Gibraltar. He supported the GSLP since 1986, and in 1996 presented himself as a candidate, being elected to the legislature (1996–2000). In the year 2000 he left politics to devote himself to his family and business. After the sad and unfortunate passing of the late Honourable Charles Bruzon MP, an election was held to fill the vacated seat. Following his election victory at a byelection in July 2013, Albert was appointed the Minister for Financial Services and Gaming of Gibraltar. Read our exclusive interview with Albert in our centre pages ‘Totally Exposed’. It helps boost your metabolism, prevent osteoporosis, lose weight and keep it under control. Moreover, you can improve

Turn to page 36 to find out effective tips that will help you reach your fitness goal - ‘8 Proven Ways to Gain Muscle’. On another note we would like to praise the ten lovely contestants of Dream Girl of the Year 2015 for an amazing performance and fabulous show held on Friday 27th February at the John Mackintosh Hall. Congratulations to the new Dream Girl of the Year 2015 Jayrene Patterson and her two princesses Janelle Duo and Zyra Barcio. This year’s beauty pageant saw ten girls competing for the popular title of Dream Girl of the Year 2015. After 8 weeks of hard work, rehearsal after rehearsal, trying to perfect those routines and catwalks, the day had finally arrived. Once again Glamour Creations achieved another full house, watched by thrilled spectators and as always Glamour Creations never seems to disappoint when it comes to a masterpiece production. Dream Girl of the Year 2015 opened with last year’s top three winners and the contestants performing. Then the audience met them one by one as the girls got the chance to give their initial impression to the judges as they got to introduce themselves. Holding the microphone for the evening was compere Andy Coumbe. Each contestant stepped up to the microphone in a very organised and strategic manner, while the other girls continued their walk. They announced their contestant number, name, age and sponsor. While the girls were backstage transforming their outfits for the next part of the competition, Urban Dance kept the audience entertained with their energetic and vibrant dance pieces, which definitely heightened the crowd and even got some people dancing in their seats. They performed three pieces during the show, ‘Walk the Dinosaur’, ‘Move’ and ‘Hip Hop Crew’. The audience was also mesmerised by the big voice of Tiffany Ferrary as she sang two songs, ‘Dear Future Husband’ and ‘Clown’. The audience was also kept entertained by an unpredictable fashion show by very young children aged between 2 and 9. The children modelled the latest collection from Mothercare. Coming back to the girls, the Miss Vogue Competition was the last time we were to see the girls in the first half. This gave the contestants the opportunity to create their own outfits and allowed them to show off their true personality. In a mixture of different styles the contestants paraded on stage to impress the judges. At the start of the second half of the show we saw the contestants competing for the Miss Catwalk award and later on we saw all ten girls with their unique and stunning evening dresses take onto the stage in the Miss Elegant competition. All the girls looked relaxed and did a fantastic job by impressing the judges in all the routines with their poise, catwalk, confidence and elegance. This was the last time we saw the contestants before the verdict by the judges was delivered. And finally the moment everyone had been waiting for. As with every beauty pageant, there can only be one winner, and after all the hard work, effort and determination by all the girls, contestant number 8 Jayrene Patterson was the lucky girl who was crowned Dream Girl of the Year 2015. Her years’ reign sees her working closely with Glamour Creations and B Magazine for the next 12 months. Dream Girl of the Year 2015 Jayrene Patterson now joins the Wall of Fame – Dream Girl of the Year Winners along side 2006 - Seisha Cabrera, 2007 Stephanie Perez, 2008 - Samey-Jo Bonfante, 2009 - Kianna Costa, 2010 Louise Bonavia, 2011- Janella Carlin, 2012 - Skyanne Dalli, 2013 - Kathryn Lima and 2014 - Julia Horne. Throughout the show there were many helping hands; their contributions were that to enable the show to become the marvel that it was. Glamour Creations wish to give thanks to Andy Coumbe, Annie Jackson, Michelle Bonavia, Debbie Goodman, Natalie Blyth, Natalia Ruiz, Liz Field, Marie Carmen Chiara, Monique Perera, Tyrene Victory, Tiffany Ferrary, Yalta Pons, Giovanca Afzan and Dalisa Sampere. The John Mackintosh Hall for the rehearsal space and Stephen Perera from Ulookfierce.com for taking care of the photography. With a very special thanks going to all the companies that sponsored the contestants and production: Aphrodite Beauty, Artenova, B Magazine, Brotons, Glamour Jewellery, Image Graphics, Mamma Mia Pizzeria & Pasta House, Moreno 2000, Mother & Baby, Paparazzi Café/Restaurant, Premier International, The Jewel Box and The Look Hair & Beauty. And also those companies who have helped in anyway in making Dream Girl of the Year possible: Blue Spirit Jewellery, Burger King, Essardas, Finesse, Little Party Planet, Marble Arc, Mill Pharmacy, Mothercare, Music Corner, S.M. Seruya Ltd, Short Cut, SRS, The Flower Shop, The Silver Shop, Trafalgar Pharmacy and Urban Dance.

Miss Universe 2014 Colombia’s Paulina Vega wins the title

Miss Colombia has been crowned Miss Universe 2014 in the 63rd annual Miss Universe beauty pageant owned by Donald Trump.

Colombia’s Paulina Vega has been crowned Miss Universe, beating contenders from the USA, Ukraine, Jamaica and the Netherlands at the world’s top beauty pageant in Florida, Miami. The 22-year-old model and business student triumphed over 87 other women from around the world, and is only the second beauty queen from Colombia to take home the prize. The last time Colombia won the crown was in 1956 when Luz Marina Zuluaga took home the title. Miss Colombia, wearing a long silver sequined gown, was beaming and tearful as she accepted her sash and crown from reigning Miss Universe, Venezuelan Gabriela Isler. She edged out first runner-up, Nia Sanchez from the United States, hugging her as her win was announced. Crowd favourite Miss Venezuela Migbelis Lynette Castellanos was cut after the top 10. The Miami suburb of Doral, which was host to the women during their stay, is also known as “Doralzuela” for its many Venezuelan residents. Three of the last six Miss Universe titles have gone to Venezuela, where beauty pageants are big business. Paulina spoke proudly of her country, and said in the question round Colombia “has been a role model for the rest of the world. We are persevering people, despite all the obstacles, we keep fighting for what we want to achieve. After years of difficulty, we are leading in several areas on the world stage.” The five-foot-nine model from Barranquilla is the granddaughter of legendary tenor Gaston Vega and 1953 Miss Atlantico, Elvira Castillo. The 63rd edition of the Miss Universe pageant, held at Florida International University, geared up with the traditional parade of eye-catching national costumes before a full house of enthusiastic fans. Ten judges were tasked to select this year’s winner, including CubanAmerican music mogul Emilio Estefan, Cuban soap opera star William Levy and Philippine boxing great Manny Pacquiao. The broadcast included performances by singers Nick Jonas and Prince Royce. The event is actually the 2014 Miss Universe pageant. The competition was pushed back until now to try to get a bigger television audience. The contest, owned by Donald Trump, is watched by about 600 million worldwide, pageant officials say. There was some criticism of the $2.5 million (£1.67 million) contribution that the city of Doral made to the pageant, as local politicians were divided over whether the promotion for the city near Miami is worth that money. The Miss Universe contest started out in 1952 as a local “bathing beauty” competition organised by a swimwear company in Long Beach, California. Today, the competition is more than a beauty pageant and contestants “compete with hope of advancing their careers, personal and humanitarian goals and seek to improve the lives of others,” according to the Miss Universe website. Dame Helen Mirren’s first television campaign as the face of L’Oréal Age Perfect aired on-screen last month. This shot taken from the muchanticipated advert, shows the awarding-winning actress sporting her famous blond crop with a modern twist. Elegantly swept off her face with lightly tousled ends, her fine hair instantly lifts her look with the illusion of added volume. For many women their hair is their armour and it can be all too tempting to stick to what once worked for us rather than what looks good now. However, an outdated hairstyle is one of the biggest age-giveaways. Chopping and changing her hairstyle has seen Helen champion the red carpet for decades, and her secret? Looking to a younger generation for ideas. ‘Be bold! Be bold with your cut, really look what young people are doing and copy them - don’t copy what old people are doing.’ advises the A-lister. ‘A lot of women get stuck at what they are good at. You see women from the Eighties who still have those Eighties hair-dos. My advice is to look at what’s happening now and go with the flow - don’t do what you did when you were 24,’ she explained in a recent interview. Staying modern and ageless does not mean dramatically overhauling your look with heavy-duty dye jobs or severe cuts but instead tweaking your current favoured hairstyle to keep it on-trend. Here are some expert tips on how to get the best out of your haircut today… With everyone’s hair being unique - whether that’s colour, texture or style - one product is never going to do exactly what we want it to. So it makes sense to find your own perfect mix of serums, sprays and creams that will help you to achieve salon-worthy styles in minutes. Finding styling products that complement each other can be tricky, so we have come up with the top mixes that will boost some of the most popular hairstyles of 2015, from how to style curly hair in beachy waves, to how to turn fine and lifeless hair into a Kate Middleton-worthy blow dry.

You parachuted into Government at the by-election, how did you find the transition?

“It was all very sudden and many things happened within a very short period of time. Having joined a team of people that were already in full swing made it much easier for me to get on with the job, especially so as Gilbert Licudi had already made a huge start on our objectives and has always been more than generous with his time in helping me through. We often discuss issues and I greatly value his opinion. In terms of transition from the private sector to the public sector, it is a bit of a shock, not in terms of the people but the systems that are in place. In my areas of responsibility in Financial Services and Gaming I have excellent teams of people I work with who are full of enthusiasm and professionalism. Within my Ministry I am also fortunate to have a great team, which I share with Gilbert and are always there to advise, support and pre-empt any issues, so I have no complaints at all! It took me a while longer to understand processes and procedures, and to be honest, I still struggle with some of these which have been in place for many years, and although they were appropriate at the time, I strongly believe should be updated and made more efficient and I am delighted that in some of these areas we are making good progress and making better use of modern technology.”

How good or bad is the interaction with Ministerial colleagues?

“This is one area where we have revolutionised how Government works. In previous years, as a small but significant example, at Parliamentary Question time Opposition questions would be answered by the relevant Minister reading his prepared answer and then almost without exception, every supplementary would be answered by the Chief Minister, Sir Peter. Today, Ministers answer their own questions, and all their supplementaries. Ministers take full responsibility for their areas and are in control of their brief. That releases and enables Fabian Picardo to concentrate and focus on his vitally important areas of responsibility. How is that possible? Quite simply, the system of Government has totally changed. Ministers are empowered and take full responsibility for their areas of responsibility, not like the old days when No6 controlled everything. Cabinet meets every Monday morning where we discuss issues and exchange views on matters of importance and where any Minister can raise any issue if he/she wishes guidance or advice from his colleagues. This gives us all an opportunity to understand and contribute to other areas outside our remit. It is a massive change from the past and difficult to understand why this never happened before. We also use technology. At any time of the day (or night!) we are in constant email communication. Last night I attended a function and on getting home I emailed the Chief Minister with a question at just before 1am. He replied 15 minutes later! We are in daily contact and communication, which makes our ability to deal with issues as a Cabinet very much quicker and more efficiently and very much better than ever before. We all get on well and are all very different as individuals which is exactly how I feel a team should be. There is no point having “yes” men simply nodding and following instructions, we each have to make a contribution and we do. We don’t always agree on everything and that too is healthy as discussion is constructive because after all, we all want the same thing – whatever is best for Gibraltar.”

How have you found the work itself?

“It’s been an exciting and challenging time since July 2013! We have had a serious challenge to our Gaming community, huge changes to how our Financial Services sector has traditionally worked and at the same time, made a monumental effort to raise our profile, our reputation and enhance our ability to attract new business to Gibraltar. I have no doubt we are now well on track to meet our objectives. BMAG 38

Albert Isola comes from a traditional family of lawyers, with businesses in Gibraltar since 1892. He studied at Stonyhurst College, Lancashire, between 1973 and 1980 and studied law at Kingston University (1980–1983). He was admitted to the Bar in 1985 in England and Gibraltar. Albert supported the GSLP since 1986, and in 1996 presented himself as a candidate, being elected to the legislature (1996–2000). In 2000, he left politics to devote himself to his family and business. After the sad and unfortunate passing of the late Honourable Charles Bruzon MP, an election was held to fill the vacated seat. Following his election victory at a by-election in July 2013, Albert was appointed the Minister for Financial Services and Gaming of Gibraltar.

I sincerely hope that what we have started since December 2011, will be the new standard for all future Governments as these past 16 years, prior to our election, we have fallen further and further behind in financial services by simply not investing in the marketing of our sector and we can never allow that to happen again. I have to say that we have found the private sector to be a willing and very welcome partner in this area. For many years they had to scream and scream to be heard. We now meet regularly, communicate daily by email, discuss what we all believe we should be doing, prepare our plans together and then go out and sell the Jurisdiction together. That costs them time and money, as it does us, and I am always truly grateful for their support, wisdom and advice. We don’t always agree, but at least we have the discussion! It is a real and genuine partnership as after all, we are all on the same side, irrespective of political allegiances, and want the very best for Gibraltar. Working closely together is the only way. Similarly in working with the Regulators in financial services teamwork and that too is bearing very satisfying results.”

What’s the worst part of the job?

“It’s a huge privilege to do this work. I take the responsibility very seriously and am fully committed to what I am doing. Fabian Picardo has entrusted me in areas of significant importance to our community and I have no intention of letting him or the people I work for down. A result of that is you have less time to spend with the people you love and care for and that is the same sacrifice for all of us in Government. My work requires me to travel extensively, often on weekends and that is also a big downside to the job. I love spending time with my family and kids, as we all do, and make a big effort to squeeze my diary to do this whenever I can.”

How rewarding is the job?

“It can of course be very rewarding but equally disappointing! When I was first elected we sat with the various teams and set ourselves a number of goals and to see them coming on stream has been very satisfying. We have made simple but effective changes which have made doing business in Gibraltar easier and are in the process of introducing changes to the legal and regulatory frameworks in both financial services and gaming which I strongly believe will further enhance the Gibraltar proposition. The working groups we have set up in these areas with the private sector are really exciting and have and will produce new areas of business as well as refreshing and updating the products we have always had which have been in dire need of review and making fit for purpose. The sectors are working hard with us to deliver these changes. At the same time we have spent much time and effort in having Gibraltar recognised as a compliant jurisdiction. This has meant working closely with the UK and other Governments to demonstrate the measures we have taken to be compliant and it is wonderful to watch more and more countries removing us from these black lists, but the work goes on as we have more to do in this area.”

Your area of work is not as widely recognised by the public as, for example, Tourism, Health or Housing. Is that an issue?

“Not for me. I do not expect people who are not involved in the industries I work in to understand the issues of compliance, black lists, regulation, products and so on. I think that is perfectly normal, but I do think people understand and appreciate the importance of these sectors to our economy and prosperity in terms of job creation, investment and creating wealth. The more successful we are in these areas the more taxes we will raise to enable us to ensure we continue to provide good education for our children, a professional health service and homes for our people. A lot of the work my colleagues in Government do is out of the public eye, as are areas of my own. That is not and never will be a measure of the effort we put in to these areas, that is not why we are here. For me, and I believe my colleagues, its about making the right decisions for the right reasons and the right reasons are and can only be what is best for our community. A fundamental flaw in politics is when a politician rubbishes Gibraltar for his own political ends: that for me is unforgiveable. Criticism yes, of course, but we must all put Gibraltar first every time.”

You come from a family of politicians. Is it in the blood?

“When you are growing up in a deeply political environment as I did in my family it does have an influence, without doubt. I was always interested in what my dad was doing and enjoyed campaigning with him and watching him in the House of Assembly. He was a fair and honourable man, and a huge inspiration to me. BMAG 39

My grandfather Albert was also in politics and was the first elected “Chief Member” in the council system at that time and then my father was active in politics for some 30 years both in Government and Opposition during some very challenging times. I was a very young child when Sir Joshua and my dad went to the United Nations for the first time and they returned to a hero’s welcome. It was interesting to personally witness how closely my father worked with Sir Joshua during those difficult times where their political differences were put aside in the best interests of Gibraltar. We were under attack and they stood side-by-side, always putting Gibraltar first. They were both exemplary Gibraltarians and we were fortunate to have them defending us at that time. I also had my Uncle Willie who was a valued Minister for Tourism and my Uncle Cecil who stood for election on a number of occasions as an independent. So yes, you could say it’s in the blood!”

Are you satisfied with the progress you are making as a Government?

“There are always things that could have been done quicker, or better or in a different way and none of us are perfect, we are human. Having said that I believe we have dramatically changed Gibraltar for the better, in a very short period of time and this has only been possible because the Chief Minister has trusted, driven and empowered Ministers to get on with the job we set ourselves in 2011. There are many physical changes for all to see, but we have done so much more than that. We answer to Parliament every month, our statistics are online for all to see, our planning process is open to all and not secret behind closed doors, we are 100% up to date with our EU obligations, Cabinet meets every Monday, we are delivering on what we promised and so much more. Our refurbished estates, our improved and new schools, our new parks, our new Bank, our new University, new homes, new residential facilities for our senior citizens, a new KG V, improved and extended health facilities and many other important features all in 3 years and with a population of 30,000 people. I don’t think you would find that dynamism, energy and commitment in any other community of our size. So yes am I very satisfied, absolutely but there’s more to come!”

How can the Civil Service better provide for the needs of today?

“I have worked in the private sector all my life and the golden rule is “quality service delivered efficiently”. In today’s world, if you don’t give a good and efficient service, the client will go elsewhere. That is the world we live in. I do not see any reason why the civil service should be any different. We should be and are striving to make the service more efficient and user friendly and I believe the vast majority of the service welcome this. We need to embrace technology and use it to assist us in the delivery of the service to our clients, the public. There is no excuse in not doing this. I have high expectations for eGov and believe this will accelerate and improve what we do. As in the private sector, I believe there is a choice for those in the civil service; embrace the change and adapt to the opportunities or seek alternatives. There is, in my view no other option and I believe the very vast majority will support and engage in this process to get better at what we do, and provide real value service to the public. This is exactly what we have done with our regulator; we have invested in strengthening the organisation, but fully expect a far more streamlined and efficient operation where firms are treated as clients as you would expect in the private sector. I see no difference, or reason for a difference and honestly believe this will be welcomed by the Civil Service who are, in the main professional, independent, and proud of the work they do. The platform is there, but there is no question we can become much better at what we do.”

How comfortable are you in a GSLP/Liberal Government? Some say you should be in the GSD?

“Well that’s a funny one as I have been in the GSLP since 1986, long before the GSD ever existed. It is my political home and I am a proud member of that family. When I look across the floor of the house, I see people who I do not believe represent the traditional GSD core support, and that is a serious problem for them. Many of my friends were staunch GSD voters but they do not believe Danny Feetham is of traditional GSD pedigree and feel that for the GSD he is the problem, not the solution. Its difficult for Danny as any change in a political party is difficult to manage, especially following Sir Peter, but I constantly hear that to replace Sir Peter with Danny, is a bridge too far and indeed many still see him as a GSLP man who didn’t have the patience to wait his turn. We shall see how that develops. As for me, I am totally at home in the GSLP and totally trust in Fabian Picardo, his acumen, judgment, intelligence and ability. He has an incredible work ethic. There were some that doubted he could follow Sir Peter at the beginning, but I think without doubt he has met and surpassed people’s expectations. He is a superb advocate for Gibraltar and is totally and utterly dedicated to the job. I am proud and privileged to form a part of his team, so yes, I am comfortable, very comfortable!” BMAG 40

AMBER LAW CELEBRATES ITS 2ND ANNIVERSARY

WHO WE ARE, WHAT WE DO AND WHY WE DO IT? www.amberlaw.gi

amber@amberlaw.gi offer our clients moral support, help them find peace of mind, restore wellbeing and aid the positive transformation from their current life situation, in family breakdown, unemployment following unfair dismissal, or ill health following accident, injury or negligence. It is common that there is a personal challenge which has given rise to the legal problem in the first place and if not treated there will likely be a repetition, a consequent downward spiral in wellbeing which to some feels almost impossible to reverse. We aim to treat both the personal and legal issue together to achieve the best possible ‘life solution” for our clients, their immediate family or support, employers, all of whom are affected. By empowering our clients and supporting them in attaining positive transformation in all areas of life, family and support systems are in turn also positively influenced”.

Our practitioners have a healthy enthusiasm and passion for resolving conflict in a positive way, with the least animosity and resistance. We investigate every avenue to be able to BMAG 44

This philosophy extends within the Amber Law working environment. “None of our lawyers operate on annual targets but are instead asked to make financial contributions to the running of the firm. We encourage maintaining a healthy work/ life balance where all work flexibly, remotely and according to their own personal and family needs. This is particularly attractive to professional women (in the main) who are juggling their professional career and young families and find it easier to work from home. Likewise it is attractive to men who want to take home a larger proportion of the fruits of their labour or work in ways to enable them to spend more quality time with the family. Amber Law’s team comprises individuals who have achieved academic excellence, are knowledgeable, experienced and who share the firm’s philosophy. In particular their lawyers have the ability to empathise with and be sensitive to their clients’ legal and personal needs, to provide innovative and creative solutions to a wide spectrum of legal /life challenges, in a safe and confidential environment. Separation & Divorce At Amber Law it is recognised that not all relationship break downs should result in legal separation or divorce. Going to a lawyer can be a knee jerk reaction. Some relationships can be rescued through counselling, family therapy or Mediation. Other relationships, however cannot and should not be rescued such as those of domestic abuse. Traditional legal services are provided including drafting pre/post-nuptial Agreements, Separation Financial Agreements, obtaining a divorce, advice concerning children such as residence, contact, maintenance, abduction, adoption and property and financial issues. Holistic Services Amber ends, “If our client has recently separated, suffered an accident or injury, is discriminated against at work because of age, sex or race or being bullied at work, this will undoubtedly have a negative impact on state of mind, leading to stress, anxiety and even depression. In addition our client will also have family, children, friends, colleagues, employers, all of whom will likely be influenced by the negativity and upset, causing them, in turn worry in the ‘ripple effect’. We resolve legal issues, but we do not necessarily see this as the end of the process. We deem it our moral responsibility not to simply leave the client walk out at that stage with no resolution to their personal/ heath needs. What about his/ her stress? Anxiety? Depression? Self esteem? What of the well being of those connected to our client? What of assisting in resolving these issues? How will they move forward after their legal problem is fixed? This is where our holistic service comes into play for which we do not charge a fee. I see this as our ‘giving back to our community’”. We invite experienced lawyers who share our philosophy to join us- please send us your CV.

The Best of

Spring 2015

Designers, both big and small, presented their spring 2015 bridal designs during Bridal Fashion Week, and did they deliver, packing in clouds of tulle, exquisite embroidery, hand-pleated skirts, and layers of Chantilly lace. Dreamy classic whites floated down the runway at Carolina Herrera, Reem Acra, Naeem Khan, and more, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t call out the unexpected moments. Non-tradition swept the collections, including Monique Lhuillier’s oneof-a-kind hydrangea blue ball gown, Vera Wang’s edgy web-lace separates, and Oscar de la Renta’s beautiful beachy bride.

We think of everything ranging from colour to style, decor and accessories when dreaming up our image of a ‘perfect home’. Yet we often tend to ignore some of the little things that ultimately make the biggest difference. Window curtains definitely fall into this category and do not generally get the attention that they deserve. Part of it lies in the fact that many homeowners are turning to other window coverings to get the job done. Then there is the factor of ‘budget limitations’, which means it is often stuff like gorgeous window curtains or exquisite carpets that take the fall first! But a curtain can go a long way in elevating the aesthetics and ergonomics of a room and is far more cost-effective than you think. And they definitely should not be an afterthought or an impulsive buy in the overall scheme of things. Choosing the wrong curtains can ruin the appeal of your living room or bedroom and would leave it a duller, more dreary space. To help you avoid this conundrum, here are a few pointers to help you get the basics of curtain shopping spot on…

An Extension of the Room

The curtains you choose for your windows must seem like a natural extension of the room. Sounds pretty basic, does it not? But in an attempt to cut down on ‘drapery expenditure’, many homeowners opt for the same curtains in every room. This might work in a few select homes, but it fails in more contemporary residences where each room has a specific theme, style and aura of its own. If it is indeed the costs involved that are stopping you from adding curtains to the windows of your home, start slowly with just the living room. There is no hard and fast rule that all the rooms must have window curtains at the same instant!

Colours & Contrast

Obviously, when we say ‘an extension of the room’, we do not mean curtains that have the exact same colour as the walls of the space. Feel free to use curtains in colours that are different from the ones already existing in the room to give it a different and unique vibe. This works well in themes that range from eclectic and Mediterranean to vintage and even modern. Another popular method is to take a tone-ontone approach to decorating, which gives the room a monolithic yet intriguing look. If you want a room full of just neutral hues, this is indeed a great choice.

Privacy & Views

Picking window curtains is not just about form and beauty alone. In fact, the primary purpose of curtains is to keep away any prying eyes while providing an option to switch between privacy and unabated views with ease. It is here that the curtain fabric and weave become an essential factor, as some offer a lot more privacy than others. While sheer curtains look and feel great and do bring with them visual lightness, they do a poor job in this regard. Add an additional layer of solid curtains along with the sheers to give yourself a wider range of options. BMAG 54

Ventilation & Insulation

Still reeling from the chill of winter outside? Thermal curtains are a great way of keeping out this cold for good and increasing the energy efficiency of your home’s heating system in the winter months. Adding curtains to the windows (and even doors) gives you an additional layer of insulation and can even bring down your power bills in the long run. Of course, pretty soon the chill outside will disappear and you will be longing to bring the exuberance of spring and warmth of summer indoors. And all you need to do then is draw those curtains back and take in the sights and sounds outside! While we warned you against the use of sheer curtains if privacy is your basic goal, they are great for creating breezy, cheerful spaces that have wonderful natural ventilation. Take into account how adding window curtains affects the flow of natural light in your home and pick a fabric accordingly. Adding heavy drapes that completely block out light in an already dark, cluttered home can be counter-productive and unappealing.

Hang it in Style

Adding a curtain to your window is not just about picking the best possible option, but also displaying it in the most apt fashion. There are numerous ways that you can hang the window curtain, and the heading of the curtain defines this look. From the cool and contemporary back-tab ripple fold to the more ornate and even Victorian styles that evoke an air of lavishness, the choices here are plenty. Consider carefully the final ambiance of the room, the overall impact of the drapery header and how it plays into the theme of the home before making the final call.

Pattern with Texture

Are you trying to add some vivacious pattern that will breathe life into your living room? Maybe your bedroom needs an additional plush texture that will add elegance and a hint of romance to the space? Consider these questions before you go shopping for a window curtain. Curtains are an easy way to introduce a fun geometric pattern or a velvety new texture to the room without making major overhauls. With bold, mid-century prints and retro motifs making a comeback recently, maybe your window curtains are the easiest way to keep the interior fresh and on trend!

The euphoria of the New Year might have waned away with passing weeks, but early February is still the time for making new beginnings and embracing designs trends that will serve you well for the next few months. From beautiful spring collections that promise to drive away the winter blues within no time to sparkling pendant lights that promise to enliven your world, it is the time to treat yourself to the latest decor finds. And as you get ready to give your home a makeover, the hot design trends that are predicted to rule 2015 will aid you in creating an even more smart and fashionable home.

Cottage Spaces This living room is full of cottage-esque charm but with a more hipster and trendier vibe when dressed in this indigo shade. We love the contrast between the two styles.

Hipster Areas

Even in open spaces indigo can create magic. This living room and dining combination has a dark blue foundation with hipster and rustic elements surrounding.

Sleek Home Office This shiny home office is decked out in a pure shade of indigo while creating a very powerful and bold statement. It’s the perfect way to decorate your office while making yourself feel secure and confident.

Textural Bedroom

We are loving all the prints and textural elements that go into this bedroom. And the addition of the “indigo” shade makes it a very welcoming yet on-trend escape.

Mixed Dining Room

The traditional and youthful mixes in this dining room are such a pleasure to the eye. Between the homey wood furniture and the funky indigo compliments, it makes quite the interesting blend.

Welcoming Sitting Space Calm, cool and relaxed, indigo works so well with a grey counterpart. This welcoming space calls for afternoon teas and the best afternoon reading sessions around.

Accessorised Living Room Indigo can also be a great accessorising colour. It can compliment and make a room and style pop without having to be the main foundation or focus.

Living Room Foundation

Sometimes a sharp accent wall is all you need to make a statement. And this living room is the best example of how a bold, silky shade can create focus and contemporary charm.

Rustic Bedroom Even your bedroom can have a contemporary twist and rustic charm when you used indigo as the main component. And it really shines off natural lighting.

Chic Kitchen Blue is one of the best shades to use in the kitchen as it suppresses the urge to munch but also creates a very relaxing and welcoming vibe. The same goes for darker shades like indigo, especially when deciding on something super chic and modern. BMAG 57

People who have no willpower are unhappy, unsuccessful, and it seems they can’t accomplish anything in life. If it sounds familiar to you, you should know that you’re not alone. There are many people who lack willpower. It’s not a fate; it’s your choice. You don’t believe in yourself and your abilities, because it’s easier to say ‘I can’t do it.’ In fact, you can do everything that a human being can do. If you want, you can find willpower to eat healthy, exercise regularly, accomplish that big project, and reach any goal. Willpower is the ability to resist short-term temptations in order to meet long-term goals. It means if you want to shrink your waistline, you should resist the temptation of eating high-calorie treats in order to reach your weight loss goal. We need willpower to live a happy and fulfilled life. If you think you don’t have enough willpower to achieve your goals, here are a few tips to consider. 1. Stay Positive

7. Read Motivational Books

2. Eat Healthy

When I wrote the word ‘love,’ I didn’t think about a loving relationship. If you don’t have a partner, it doesn’t mean that you don’t love anyone. You love many people and things. Write down the list of the people and things you love in life and you will see that your life is full of love; you simply don’t notice it. Love your parents, friends, animals, nature, job, etc. Fill your heart with love and it will help you overcome any obstacles, challenges and difficulties.

Positivity can heal your life. It can brighten a dull day, make you feel good and look good. It can help you make more friends and become more successful at work. Positivity can help you stay healthy and fit. Positive people have more willpower to reach their goals. If you have no willpower, start with cultivating a positive attitude. Learn how to laugh at an awkward situation, cope with any difficult situation, resist temptations and survive a hard day with the smile on your face. With smiles and laughter, your days will be more bearable and more joyous and you won’t notice that you lack willpower.

A healthy meal plan is the key to better health, high energy levels, more willpower and longer life. Eating a healthy breakfast helps you keep your weight under control, increase your energy levels and tackle the day’s problems easier and faster. When you are slim and full of energy, you are more confident and successful. However, you should also make healthy snack choices and cook a healthy dinner, as well. Moreover, it’s important to drink enough water to stay hydrated.

Books help us feel better, live better and they help us escape from a reality for a while. You can find a solution to your problems in books, as well. Read a few pages of a motivational book each day to boost your willpower and improve your life. Avoid reading online, though. If you don’t like reading or if you can’t read at home, make a habit of going to your local library each day to read your favourite book. No one will disturb you, which means you will read more pages. The library is the best choice since it has fewer distractions.

8. Fill Your Heart with Love

3. Stay Active

Break a habit of spending your weekends in front of the TV or laptop. Get up and go for a walk, or run, or a bike ride. Start maintaining your garden (if you have it, of course), keep your house clean, volunteer, play with your pet and take the stairs instead of the elevator. Whatever you choose to do, make sure you don’t spend your day or evening lying on the couch. You have a willpower to stay active throughout the day. Just stick to a healthy diet to boost your energy, stay positive to boost your mood, and believe in yourself to boost your confidence.

4. Get Rid of Envy & Jealousy

People who lack confidence and willpower tend to be jealous and envious of what other people have. Get rid of envy and jealousy to find more willpower to live your own life. Studies show that envy and jealousy can spoil life of the most successful people. These feelings prevent you from being productive, happy, and confident. Envy and jealousy can also lead to a number of illnesses, including anxiety and depression.

5. Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

Just because your friend has more willpower to do something doesn’t mean that she is better or stronger than you. Trust me, you may have even more willpower than she has. You just need to discover that willpower. It’s okay to find a role model and copy some of their traits, but don’t live someone else’s life, live your own life. Be yourself, be proud of who you are and love yourself.

6. Reduce Your Stress Levels

I’m sure that most of you know about the drawbacks of stress and its negative effect on our health and overall well-being. The only thing I want to tell you is that it’s crucial to keep your stress levels under control. It’s okay to feel stressed every now and then, but if you have to deal with stress every day, you should learn how to fight it. Go for a walk, breathe deeply and enjoy the nature. It’s one of the most effective ways to reduce your stress levels.

BMAG 58

I believe all people have strong willpower, you are no exception. Learn how to use it effectively and it will help you succeed in life and become a bit happier. Hopefully, my tips helped you. Do you have strong willpower? Do you think people need high willpower to be happy and successful?
