Publisher & Editor’s Letter

Love is in the air and the countdown is on until Valentine’s Day. So, now is the time to make your hints about what it is you might be after from your loved one - be it something fun and practical, something sweet, or something seriously gorgeous like one of the incredible dresses worn by A-list stars at the Golden Globes.

disease, age-related macular degeneration, premature aging, and can even reduce your risk of cancer, since they combat free radicals in your body. The darker your chocolate, the more powerful antioxidants it has. So, don’t give up on chocolates just yet and turn to page 34 to learn ‘5 Healthy Reasons to Drink Hot Chocolate’.

The 72nd Golden Globe Awards was unveiled on Sunday 11th January 2015. The Golden Globes brought out the best actors in television and movies, offering up one of the most diverse audiences of the awards season. With the varied group of people, also came a mix of the good, bad, and the ugly on the red carpet. From Amal Clooney wearing vintage Dior and long white gloves and Jennifer Lopez in a very sexy Zuhair Murad metallic number to Rosamund Pike’s bland Vera Wang and Tina Fey’s oddly proportioned dress, turn to pages 16-20 to find out B Mag’s picks of the ‘Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet’s Best & Worst Dressed.

On a final note, we would like to wish the ten beautiful contestants competing for the title of Dream Girl of the Year 2015 the very best of luck. The competition, which is in its 10th year, will take place on Friday 27th February at 8:30pm at the John Mackintosh Hall. Tickets are priced at £15 and will be on sale from Diamond Occasion as form Monday 9th February. Proceeds this year will be in aid of RICC.

Enough said about the Golden Globe Awards, back to the most romantic day of the year… Valentine’s Day! Valentine’s Day is a very special day that comes once a year and a lot of people make plans for Valentines to make their loved one feel that extra special. If you put a little thought into it, there are so many Valentines Day ideas you could introduce into the day to make it one to remember.

The 13th edition of Miss Glamour, which is aimed for young ladies between the ages of 15-20, will be taking place on Friday 10th July at the Alameda Open Air Theatre. Entry forms can already be collected from Diamond Occasion, 1st Floor, ICC. And finally, the 10th Anniversary of the Wedding Dress Competition 2015 will now be taking place on Friday 29th May at the Alameda Open Air Theatre. But unfortunately, the world is a lonely place for many people, especially for those who have been hurt for many times. In spite of heartbreaks you should look for a person who will really appreciate you. We often suffer from love, because it is part of pain and part of something wonderful at the same time. Sometimes it’s necessary to struggle for your love and happiness. That’s why you shouldn’t become despondent if something is going wrong in your relationship. You should realise that you are wonderful and unique in this world. Just remove the blocks of unworthiness and let yourself feel happy and loved. Turn to page 40 to discover ‘7 Wonderful Reasons You Deserve Love’.

However, it doesn’t have to be a special time of the year like Valentine’s Day to celebrate love. Whether or not we are in a loving relationship makes no difference, for each day is cause for celebration to love and honour all the people who are part of our lives. Each day we should give thanks, be grateful, and express love to all who we encounter during the course of our day.

When one thinks about Valentines they automatically think about chocolate. One of the most popular winter beverages too, hot chocolate, is chock full of amazing benefits. Not only does it keep you warm during the cold winter season, it can also boost your overall health. Chocolate itself is high in powerful antioxidants that help prevent heart

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Everyone at B Mag wish all the love birds out there, both young and old a Happy Valentine’s Day and don’t forget, you need to show your love for each other everyday, so make each day a Valentines Day, and keep that spark going in your relationship.

Until the next issue… Ciao for now. Much Love B&B

STRIPES Stripe on! The classic print got a cheery makeover during spring/summer 2015 shows at New York Fashion Week. But instead of la mariniere, or nautical, lines in standard navy blue and white, designers have striped their runway looks in practically every shade of the rainbow. There’s nothing uniform about them, either. These ones are coming from all directions at different widths and in refreshingly vibrant hues. When it comes to patterns, designers are taking a linear approach this season. From mod zigzags to bold sailor motifs, stripes are dominating the runways. For spring, there’s only one rule of thumb - more is more. So, mix, match and pile it on with gusto. Clashing colours? Who cares! Outrageous print medleys? Why not! It’s only a matter of time until the front row lines up for this one. Go ahead, and choose your pick.

Miss Gibraltar 2014

at the Miss World 2014 Miss World 2014 ended with the election of one of its most stunning winners of all times, South Africa’s Rolene Strauss. She confirmed her status of favourite and bagged the crown, sash, money prize, deservingly so. Her victory is unquestionable and we are sure she will be an extraordinary titleholder and ambassador for Beauty With a Purpose. 1st Princess was Miss Hungary and 2nd Princess Miss United States. The Miss World 2014 show was quite amazing. The opening act was electrifying with the performance of Skye Blu and all the candidates wearing their national costumes. Dances of the World followed, making it even more enjoyable.

BMAG 8

The candidates’ introduction was different from previous years and the 121 contenders got to walk a bit and have a few seconds more of attention than in previous years and the announcement of the Top 25 quarterfinalists was dynamic and all of them had a chance to have a quick walk and be focused by the cameras. Miss World 2013 Megan Young definitely delivered a flawless performance hosting the show with television presenter Tim Vincent. Mr World Canada 2013 Frankie Cena was superb as well: funny, creative, with complete control of what he was doing. The videos in which Megan and Frankie appeared were fun to watch and gave a lighter tone to the show. The tributes to Miss World 1994 Aishwarya Rai and Julia Morley were very touching. Julia has been doing an extraordinary work with Beauty With a Purpose, and does her work with a heart and truly cares about the women who participate in her event. Aishwarya is already a living legend, Bollywood’s greatest star ever. It was amazing seeing her back on the Miss World stage after two decades. The final moments were similar to last year’s, with videos of each of the 5 finalists and the famous final question, “Why should you be the next Miss World?” Crowning was traditional and great as usual, the most awaited moment of the night. In overall terms, it was an excellent show; time flew during this year’s telecast. Miss World is different from other pageants, with its own face. It created a unique identity and deserves kudos for that. We caught up with reigning Miss Gibraltar Shyanne Azzopardi to talk about her experience in the Miss World 2014. Tell us about yourself.

“I consider myself to be talkative, organised and kind at heart. My fiancée, family and friends mean the world to me.”

What made you enter the Miss Gibraltar beauty pageant?

“Entering Miss Gibraltar has always been a childhood ambition of mine, which I wanted to fulfil.”

Share with us your experience at the Miss World pageant.

Which has been your absolute favourite moment at the Miss World?

“I have many great moments from Miss World. I felt very proud throughout the whole competition as I got to represent my unique country Gibraltar. The events, outings and rehearsals were great. The friendships that were formed during my time at miss world will last a lifetime. However, my favourite moment was when Gibraltar was introduced on the final night, I really felt the support from all the Gibraltarians present.”

Would you encourage others to enter pageants?

“It is very hard to put into words about how my experience at Miss World was. However, if I had to sum it up into a sentence it would have to be; Miss World is a truly unique experience because 121 countries come together as one to share the same passion and dream. I have certainly made friends to cherish for a lifetime.”

“Yes because I believe pageants can give you confidence both on and off stage. You also have the opportunity to meet and make new friends. Furthermore, I also believe you can learn about yourself and take something from the whole experience. Even if you don’t take the crown home you will leave with experiences to last a lifetime.”

Tell us about your preparation for the Miss World contest.

What advice do you have for future contestants vying for the title of Miss Gibraltar?

“The lead up to the Miss World finals has different sections. I made sure I felt fully prepared for each one of the events. For example, for the talent round I made sure I knew my choreography inside out in order to dance with emotion and conviction on the audition day.”

Miss World’s slogan is “Beauty with a Purpose”. What do you think is your purpose?

“I believe my purpose is to help and offer a kind hand to others. I truly believe beauty comes from within. I always put others before myself.”

As a contestant, what would you like to see done to improve the Miss World pageant?

“It would be nice for the pageant to be held for a longer period of time. That way the contestants can embrace each moment to the fullest.”

“The advice I would give for future contestants is for them to enjoy themselves especially throughout the rehearsals, because the night of the show will flash before their eyes.”

What would you say to some people who think that beauty pageants are outdated?

“I would inform them that pageants nowadays are very up to date. It’s not only about an individuals looks but it is about being all rounded. I truly believe in beauty with a purpose. Beauty pageants nowadays are working very closely with charities and they are truly making a difference.”

Who are your favourite beauty queens?

“Megan Young, Aishwarya Rai and of course our very own Kaiane Aldorino.” BMAG 9

Can you tell us a little bit about some of the highlights of the year for you so far?

“I have had the privilege to have had a very busy but yet amazing schedule. A few highlights would have to be; representing Gibraltar at Miss World, the wing walk around Gibraltar and helping out the community as much as possible especially with charity events.”

Has your year as Miss Gibraltar been as you expected it to be like?

“Yes because I wanted to make the most of every opportunity that’s came my way and so far I am fulfilling this aim.”

If you could go back in time and give yourself one piece of advice the minute after you were crowned Miss Gibraltar, what would it be?

“To enjoy every minute of my reign because time flies!”

Have you entered in any other beauty pageants? Do you hold any other previous titles/awards?

“I hold the title of Miss Glamour 2008.”

Describe your fashion scene and style.

“Classic but very modern.”

Do you have any nicknames?

“Shy Shy.”

Tell us about some of the important lessons and principles you learned from your family?

“Never give up in life, try and you will succeed. Always be true to yourself. Be kind to others.”

Who is your role model and why?

“My parents as they have taught me all my values. They have also been very supportive throughout all my decisions I have made in life. Without my parents I wouldn’t be here today. I would like to thank them for everything they have done for me. I love them very much.”

What do you consider is your greatest achievement?

“Having graduated from University.”

Where would you like to live?

“Gibraltar as there is no place like home.”

What is your most treasured possession?

“For my 18th birthday my mum made me a scrapbook with photos and memories from when I was born until I was 18.”

What do you most value in your friends?

“The fact we don’t see each other every day but when we do its like I saw them yesterday. Which for me is the true meaning for friendship.”

If you could travel back in time when and where would you travel?

“The day my sister was born as this is one of my treasured moments. She is going to be 11 already and I can honestly say I don’t know where the time has gone!”

What is the most precious gift you have given to someone?

“I made a family collage of photos for my parents, which they both loved. I think you are able to get great memories from photos and I love making presents myself, as it is the thought that counts.”

What is your personal quote or motto that you live by?

“Never give up!”

If you could go back and start your life over again, what one thing would you do differently?

“To be honest I believe that everything happens for a reason so I would not change my life. Everything that happens to us in life makes us who we are today.”

What’s inside your bag right now?

“Makeup, wallet, gloves and my keys.”

What are your plans for the immediate future?

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

“To continue enjoying working with the community and to make the most of my time as Miss Gibraltar.”

What is your greatest fear?

Finally, any beauty secrets that you would like to share with the readers of B Mag?

“Spending time quality time with my fiancée, family and friends.” “I don’t really have a fear but I hate ketchup!”

Which talent would you most like to have?

“It would have to be to be able to sing!”

BMAG 10

“I like to eat healthy but I do believe in a balanced diet so I treat myself now and again. I like staying fit and this comes in handy being a Zumba instructor.”

Red Carpet’s Best & Worst Dressed The Golden Globes brought out the best actors in television and movies, offering up one of the most diverse audiences of the awards season. With the varied group of people, also came a mix of the good, bad, and the ugly on the red carpet. From Amal Clooney wearing vintage Dior and long white gloves and Jennifer Lopez in a very sexy Zuhair Murad metallic number to Rosamund Pike’s bland Vera Wang and Tina Fey’s oddly proportioned dress, check out B Mag’s picks of best and worst dressed.

Katie Holmes, Marchesa

Katie Holmes channels a young Ali McGraw with her lovely, long ponytail, minimalist makeup and sleek strapless Marchesa gown. Always on trend, her gown is Marsala coloured, which happens to be Pantone’s colour of the year.

Lupita Nyong’o, Dakota Johnson,

Chanel Dakota Johnson is on the brink of superstardom, so it’s no wonder that she looks as if she fits the part in a metallic gown from Chanel’s fall 2014 couture collection, the silver dress with fringe and high slit is disco ball chic done right.

Viola Davis,

Donna Karan Atelier How to Get Away with Murder star Viola Davis was a study in scarlet in her beaded Donna Karan Atelier dress. There were lots of beads and shiny fabric but she kept the accessories to a simple silver clutch and a diamond cuff.

Kate Hudson, Kelly Osbourne,

Georges Chakra The jewelled detail on the neckline of Kelly Osbourne’s Georges Chakra dress is an odd fan shape and seems like an extraneous detail. The sleeves also makes her arms look like wings - and not in a good angel kind of way. BMAG 16

Versace Kate Hudson’s Versace dress is the classy way to show lots of skin. The plunging neckline shows off just enough cleavage and the glimmering cut outs show off some of her cut stomach. With her hair pulled back and simple makeup and jewels, the gown stands out as the centrepiece of her look.

Giambattista Valli She’s a master of red carpet fashion and Lupita Nyong’o didn’t disappoint. She opted to wear Giambattista Valli, which could have been a fashion disaster after Lena Dunham’s mishap wearing the brand last year. But the Kenyan actress was a vision in lilac in this feminine frock with a floral appliqué on the top and floral design trickling down the front as well.

Helen Mirren,

Dolce & Gabbana The 69-year-old paired her curvehugging red Dolce & Gabbana gown with a fountain pen pinned to the bodice. The accessory was a symbol worn to show her support of freedom of the press and expression, spurred by the Charlie Hebdo attack in Paris.

Naomi Watts,

Gucci Actress Naomi Watts literally shined on the red carpet with a lemon yellow strapless number by Gucci, and an eye-opening Bulgari serpent diamond necklace - rumoured to be more than 76 carats. She topped off the look with a bright orange lip.

Salma Hayek Pinault,

Alexander McQueen Salma Hayek Pinault jazzed up her princess-style white brocade gown by Alexander McQueen with a silver belt (a nod to the night’s disco trend) and feather diamond earrings. She topped it all off with a rose tucked behind her ear.

Kristen Wiig,

Delphine Manivet Kristen Wiig made everyone laugh when she presented an award with her former co-star Bill Hader, but the warm feelings weren’t matched for her Delphine Manivet dress. The ‘70s vibe is unique but the loose-fitting top is unflattering and her figure is lost in the fabric.

Keira Knightley,

Chanel Keira Knightley hid her growing baby bump in the most elegant way: in a prim lace gown embellished with butterfly designs. The custom-made dress from Chanel required the work of 30 artisans.

Sienna Miller, Kerry Washington,

Mary Katrantzou Scandal star Kerry Washington went directional with a metallic, colour-block gown by British itdesigner Mary Katrantzou. She tempered the bold pink and blue design with sparing jewellery and a simple black clutch.

Miu Miu She’s been in disguise with dark locks of late (American Sniper, Foxcatcher) but Sienna Miller returned to her bold, blond ways with a choppy bob and a beaded Miu Miu gown.

Emma Stone,

Camila Alves,

Monique Lhuillier Camila Alves was elegant in a Monique Lhuillier pink column dress and brand new blond highlights.

Lanvin Emma Stone’s jumpsuit is a lot to look at — there’s a big bow on the back, the top is sequined and embellished, and she’s wearing pants among a sea of long skirts. But while one would expect all of these details to clash, they come together perfectly.

Maggie Gyllenhaal,

Miu Miu Maggie Gyllenhaal, who wears plenty of high fashion opted for a strapless silk gown by cult favourite Miu Miu. She accessorised her rose-coloured dress with a gold clutch and her brother Jake Gyllenhaal.

Lorde,

Narciso Rodriguez She didn’t take home the award for Best Original Score but 18-yearold Lorde scored on the red carpet in an impossibly chic Narciso Rodriguez menswear suit and Neil Lane choker. Who knew baring your midriff could look so elegant?

Julianne Moore,

Givenchy The fashion plate wowed yet again in a sparkling custom Givenchy dress, which the house’s artistic director Riccardo Tisci teased in a close-up Instagram before the event. The sequined and feathered number is on trend in metallic and ombré.

Amal Alamuddin CLOONEY,

Dior Amal Alamuddin looked as beautiful as she is smart in a vintage Dior gown. For her first time at the Golden Globes, the humanitarian went with safe black but took a risk wearing long-white gloves.

Jenna Dewan-Tatum,

Carolina Herrera Jenna Dewan-Tatum stole a little of her husband’s thunder in a strapless canary yellow Carolina Herrera dress with a dramatic train.

Jennifer Aniston,

Saint Laurent It’s not that Jennifer Aniston doesn’t look good, it’s that she looks the same. The Cake actress always wears black on the red carpet and it would have been nice to see the star take a risk. BMAG 17

Rosamund Pike,

Vera Wang While Rosamund Pike is in white, which makes her on-trend, the Vera Wang doesn’t fit the Gone Girl actress well, and doesn’t define her waist. Patricia Arquette,

Maria Menounos,

Gabriela Cadena Maria Menounos looks like she stepped out of a time machine from the ‘80s with her gelled back hair and over-detailed Gabriela Cadena dress.

Claire Danes,

Valentino The dress stunned on the runway but it wasn’t tailored to Danes’s body - especially in the chest area - and takes away from the detailing and embellishment that made such an impact when the Valentino collection was originally shown.

Escada She might have been winner for her acting chops, but Patricia Arquette’s Escada dress is made with too much material making her look top-heavy. The big bow is overwhelming and a seemingly unnecessary detail.

Amanda Peet,

J. Mendel Amanda Peet gave birth a little more than a month ago and looks great - but her dress doesn’t. The pale blue J. Mendel gown is wrinkly and in need of a good steam and all in all it’s too casual for the occasion.

Lana Del Rey,

Travilla Lana Del Rey looks ready for prom - not in a good way - with her combination of a vintage Travilla dress, Ferragamo clutch, and XIV Karats diamonds. BMAG 18

Jemima Kirke, Quvenzhané Wallis,

Armani Quvenzhané Wallis, who favours sparkles and lots of colour, wore a custom made Armani number. This one delivered both. The Annie actress wore a lilac and white coloured gown with pearl embellishments.

Taylor Schilling,

Ralph Lauren Orange is the New Black actress Taylor Schilling modelled two of the evening’s biggest trends with her Ralph Lauren gown: the colour red and going backless.

Zosia Mamet,

Andrew Gn The Girls star’s beige and blush gown is too mature for the 26-yearold Mamet, who sported a very ontrend long bob.

Joanne Froggatt,

Marchesa Joanne Froggatt looks every inch the award winner in this gown by Marchesa. A classic red carpet shape with a bit of signature Marchesa glitz thrown in for good measure.

Rosie Assoulin Gwyneth Paltrow’s Tom Ford cape dress at the 2012 Oscar’s was a style moment to remember but Jemima Kirke’s Rosie Assoulin outfit probably won’t have the same impact in fashion history.

Reese Witherspoon,

Calvin Klein Reese Witherspoon shows off her veteran red carpet status in this strapless shimmer gown by Calvin Klein. The colour and shape of the gown plus the old school Hollywood hair and makeup are exactly right.

Kate Beckinsale,

Elie Saab A pretty dress from Elie Saab for Kate Beckinsale. The embellishment on the top of this design saves the look as pale colours like grey and nude in real life look amazing but in pictures tend to end up looking a little drab.

Diane Kruger,

Emilia Wickstead Wearing a favourite designer of Kate Middleton’s, Diane Kruger’s perfectly fitting dress makes the actress’s list of best looks (and that’s saying a lot - she always dresses well!).

Tina Fey,

Antonio Berardi We love co-host Tina Fey but can’t say the same for the custom Antonio Berardi dress she wore on the red carpet. It would be a beautiful wedding cake, though!

Jennifer Lopez,

Zuhair Murad Jennifer Lopez doing what Jennifer Lopez does best. Classic JLo hair and makeup teamed with a characteristically spectacular dress.

Heidi Klum,

Versace Red carpet glamour nailed by Heidi Klum in this red Versace dress. The colour, the one shoulder detail and draped bodice is all perfection.

Anna Kendrick,

Monique Lhuillier A very big dress for a rather little lady, the colour and pattern are lovely but the whole dress is perhaps just a little too voluminous, overwhelming Anna somewhat.

Allison Williams,

Melissa McCarthy,

Lena Dunham,

Armani Prive Allison Williams chose a bright red ruffled gown by Armani Prive. Amongst a sea of red gowns it’s nice to see this one with a little added detail.

Jessica Chastain,

Atelier Versace Jessica Chastain opted for a plunging neckline gown by Atelier Versace. The bronze high-shine colour is an odd choice; perhaps she channelling the Golden Globe she was hoping to win.

Emily Blunt,

Michael Kors Emily Blunt channels a Grecian goddess in this white dress, which was custom made for her by Michael Kors. The combination of the dress and an equally Grecian hairstyle may just push her slightly into the fancy dress category. BMAG 20

Custom dress Monochrome is a timeless colour combination. A half tuxedo, half dress creation however is not. The bow tie is a nice added detail to this look that Melissa made herself!

Zac Posen Possibly the best Lena has ever looked, a bright red gown with draped back and asymmetric hemline - flattering and fashion forward.

Michelle Monaghan,

Jason Wu Michelle perfectly channels 90s glam-rock (think Kate Moss) in this beaded slip dress by Jason Wu.

If you’re looking for ways to treat thinning hair, I’m sure there are many that sympathise. It’s easier to accept that as you age you will experience hair loss, but if there are piles in your hairbrush and you shed regularly, it can be alarming. Our hair is our crowning glory and it is linked to the confident way we face the world. A bad hair day is no joke after all. If you think too many of your lovely strands are flowing down the plughole or being sucked up by the vacuum, here are some ways to treat thinning hair that might work for you.

1 DIET

Your body including your skin, nails, and hair is a reflection of what you eat. You can’t expect your hair to be on its best behaviour if you aren’t feeding it right. One of the best ways to treat thinning hair is to start with your diet. The key nutrients for healthy, lustrous hair are protein, zinc, iron and B12. This means you should be eating lots of fish, lean meat, leafy green vegetables, pulses and beans.

2 REDUCE STRESS

It’s no joke that stress can cause hair loss. Emotional stress puts your body under all sorts of physical stress. If you’re not at the top of your game, it’s time to calm down and deal, because it’s not just essential for your hair, but your entire well being. I know stress is not easy to handle but make time for yourself to breathe. Find time to enjoy some peace and if you can, learn to meditate. Identify those stressors and tackle them.

3 STYLING

If you are eating a healthy balanced diet and you aren’t stressed, it could be the constant styling of your hair that is causing it to thin. Cutting down on styling and the amount of products you use could be the best gift you give your hair. Find some easy to prepare and wear styles that do not require heat for at least a couple of days a week. Maybe it’s time for a visit to the salon for a change that means less fuss to achieve a great look. If you must use heat, use it gently and remember the rules about brushing – wide toothcombs and bristles, and don’t tug!

4 WASHING

How regularly you should wash your hair is a hot topic right now. There are many arguing that you only need wash your hair every 2-3 days, not every day. While the arguments continue, you’ll only find out what’s right for you by trying it out. If you wash daily, switch to every other day. If after a while you find there’s less hair in the plughole, stick with it as your regular routine.

5 MASSAGE

Massage is one of the great ways to treat thinning hair because it has twofold benefits. One is it stimulates hair growth by promoting blood flow to the scalp and second, it is relaxing. The best time for a scalp massage is in the shower when you’re washing your hair. Use shampoos, conditioners or treatments for thinning hair and they’ll penetrate better with the massage motion. BMAG 28

6 CHEMICAL TREATMENTS

Many products are available that claim to help with hair loss. If this is your chosen route, the name you need to look for in the product’s ingredient list is Minoxidil. It is the only FDA approved ingredient “proved” to give an improvement. It works by enhancing the size of the hair follicle so a bigger, thicker strand can grow – so essentially, it doesn’t stop hair loss but promotes better replacement growth.

7 OTHER TREATMENTS

There are a few other options if none of the above work. You can consider a supplement – make sure it contains the essentials needed to promote healthier growth: fish oil, zinc, vitamin C, niacin (vitamin B3) and biotin. Another option is laser treatment. This tackles any inflammation in the follicles that is preventing growth. You might also consider cortisone shots, or how about acupuncture. For any of these, do not go ahead without consulting a doctor or hair specialist. Your doctor may find you have a hormone imbalance or other condition which can be treated in a different manner to all those I’ve described here.

Like many things, finding the best way to treat thinning hair is a case of trial and error. If you tackle the diet, stress and styling, you won’t lose anything and in fact, that’s a win because you’ll look and feel better, even if your hair is still a problem. After that you can move onto the other options.

One of the most popular winter beverages, hot chocolate, is chock full of amazing benefits. Not only does it keep you warm during the cold winter season, it can also boost your overall health. Chocolate itself is high in powerful antioxidants that help prevent heart disease, age-related macular degeneration, premature aging, and can even reduce your risk of cancer, since they combat free radicals in your body. The darker your chocolate, the more powerful antioxidants it has. However, you may wonder if a cup of hot chocolate is as healthy as that bar of dark chocolate. Hot chocolate has been used for many years to treat diseases and fight bad moods. It’s known as a special healthy drink from the 16th to 19th centuries, and sometimes was taken as a medicine. Nowadays people don’t consider hot chocolate as a medicine, but drink even more than ever! There are plenty of tasty and healthy hot chocolate recipes you can try to enjoy the following health benefits of drinking hot chocolate.

NEW SALON OPENED AT 262 MAIN STREET

Now that you’re aware of some of the best health benefits of drinking hot chocolate, what are you waiting for? Rush into your kitchen and make this fantastic winter beverage. When making your hot chocolate, opt for unsweetened coconut or almond milk instead of cow’s milk and avoid adding sugar. Remember, the less sugar you add to your drinks, the better it is for your health. BMAG 34

“In the first place I want to thank you for the opportunity to talk to B Magazine, a little over the third anniversary of our election into office. I find it truly remarkable that more than 3 years have gone by – in a very real sense it feels like no more than 3 weeks. Interestingly, since the Ministerial reshuffle in December of last year, I think it is a very good opportunity to review what the Government has been able to accomplish in my former responsibilities of Tourism, the Port and Transport; as you know I retain responsibility for Business. Also, if you will allow me, I would like to tell you a little about the reforms I plan to introduce in my new responsibility of Employment. As your readers may recall, our Chief Minister appointed for the first time, a Minister dedicated specifically to Small and Medium sized businesses to create an effective line of communication between small businesses and the Government. One of the first steps I took was to set up a Small Business Board to discuss the issues and concerns of traders in Gibraltar in order to address these. Just to run you very quickly through some of the many business-friendly measures introduced, I would like to highlight the re-introduction of the discount for early payment of rates at 10% for businesses and an early payment discount of 65% to start-up companies based in Gibraltar for the first year of trading. I am especially looking forward to the debate in Parliament of the Office of Fair Trading Bill. Although the law covers many important aspects of doing business, a central component is the one-stop shop that will streamline the way in which businesses can be set-up in Gibraltar. The new Office will make it easier and quicker to establish a business. In addition, consumers will be better protected by the new legislation. The Department of Consumer Affairs, which will be tasked under the new Act to monitor business compliance within the new OFT structure, has embarked on a series of training initiatives to ensure the effective delivery of their obligations under the new legislation. As a Government, we are very keen to promote sustainable enterprises and acknowledge the great value in business start-up and nurturing schemes. As a result, the Chief Minister announced the set up a Fund to support the development of start-ups in Gibraltar. Under the auspices of my Business Ministry, a Board has been set up with the Chamber of Commerce and the Federation of Small Businesses that will consider applications for business start-ups. The criteria for applications and other related matters are currently being evaluated and the Board expects to make an announcement very soon. I would like to cover more areas, so I intend now to discuss maritime affairs, which is a little known but critically important part of our diversified economy, and which projects Gibraltar’s robust reputation worldwide as a centre of maritime excellence. The Gibraltar Maritime Administration will tell you that since our election into office, they have experienced an unprecedented level of development and support. It is with a great deal of satisfaction that I can say that the merchant ship and pleasure yacht fleets have increased to their highest levels since they were established in 1997. My vision for the GMA, fully supported by the Cabinet, has focussed on the Administration not just being a hub of quality maritime services, but also being recognised internationally as such; hence my business development trip to Hong Kong. My colleague Minister Isola has only recently returned from a further Hong Kong business trip to strengthen our established commercial relationships. It goes without saying that facilitating maritime economic growth in Gibraltar is the primary objective. In this respect, the number of commercial ships on the Gibraltar Ship Register increased to more than 320 and overall Gross Tonnage has increased on average by 50% within two years, up to 3.3 million at the end of 2014. Gibraltar remains an attractive registry for central and northern European ship owners, particularly due to the quality service given by the Administration, local ship representatives and the reputation of the Gibraltar flag, which in March 2013 achieved US Coastguard recognition. In terms of technical performance, Gibraltar is ranked one of the top twenty performing registers in the world. BMAG 38

The Gibraltar Yacht Registry has also expanded its fleet, which presently numbers more than 820 vessels. More importantly, the range of services offered by the yacht registry has diversified, from the introduction of new products such as ‘yachts under construction’, ‘mega yacht registration’, online name checking and reservations. Finally in respect of the GMA, I am also very proud to say that it is at the forefront of the new e-government project, with a series of online services available now and in the pipeline, including online payments. Furthermore, the department’s internal systems have been upgraded and the registries now have one of the most sophisticated vessel management databases on the market. We have not stood still either in respect of the fulfilment of manifesto commitments in connection with the Port and I can confirm that work continues to improve port facilities and infrastructure. The new mess room for the launch crew was completed last year and plans are in the design phase for the new port workshop. The new port administration building incorporating a new VTS system and port lookout is under construction and is envisaged to ready by the autumn of this year. The new Vessel Management system is now fully operational allowing for further streamlining of port operations and CCTV coverage with permanent recording in the Port Estate is now in place. Also in line with our commitments, we have carried out an extensive review of port tariffs resulting in targeted reductions that we are quietly confident will lead to an increase in activity levels and reinforce our competitive edge over neighbouring ports in Spain and Morocco. A very significant project currently underway is the small boat marina that will provide 700 berths and, which, equally as importantly, will incorporate a new reporting berth. In keeping with the Government’s green policies and initiatives, I was proud to introduce robust environmental legislation in order to ensure serious deterrence to would-be polluters by significantly increasing the levels of fines. The Port of Gibraltar became a member of the Green Award Scheme and incentivises ships that are environmentally friendly by reducing port tariffs. Quite a numerous number of manifesto commitments were also achieved in respect of Transport. To take a few examples, a Shuttle Service to Both Worlds was introduced and a new route to Mount Alvernia. More generally, the Bus Company and I successfully reformulated the routes in August 2012, which was very well received by the public. A free bus service to the frontier via route 5 was also introduced for senior citizens. Also, several new bus shelters were installed; additionally, they were renovated in order to enable full accessibility for all of our community. We also installed Solar Powered Lights at 56 of our bus shelters. And, of course, I could not finish the section on Transport without highlighting the whole-scale replacement of the aging bus fleet with an entirely modern, eco-friendly and fully accessible bus fleet. I am confident that the new fleet will more than adequately service the needs of our community for the next 10 years. And, of course, a lot has happened in tourism. The Gibraltar Tourist Board and I carefully selected promotional and marketing opportunities to maximise value for money criteria. A new dedicated website for the GTB was launched in December 2012, which is compatible with tablets and smartphones. Crucially, the Rock’s position as a serious player in the international cruise industry and leading port of call in the Mediterranean has been consolidated. This has been achieved with the boost in cruise ship arrivals and visitors in 2014 and 2015. Our competitiveness has been further strengthened by the introduction of discounts on passenger-dues to incentivise cruise company calls and enable further expansion of the local trade. The policy I immediately introduced of personal engagement with senior executives of cruise companies on a one-to-one basis in Miami, UK and other international industry gatherings has yielded positive results. Royal Caribbean International announced that its newest ship Anthem of the Seas would be making seven port calls to Gibraltar in 2015 bringing nearly 5,000 passengers each time. As part of the policy of expanding air connectivity, the GTB and I were able to secure new air routes by EasyJet to Bristol and by Royal Air Maroc to Tangier in 2015, to be added to the Monarch air link to Birmingham that we achieved in 2013. Extra passenger capacity on British Airways from London Heathrow was also obtained as a direct result of one to one meetings with top BA executives. 2013 and 2014 saw major accessibility works in conjunction with the Ministry of Social Services across Gibraltar’s beaches, with the aim of ensuring full accessibility to the seafront. The public swimming pools at Camp Bay and Little Bay were installed with new automated chlorination systems; waterparks, jellyfish booms and accessibility units were also provided at our beaches. Sandy Bay was also equipped with new changing room/toilet facilities. By June 2014 the new Sandy Bay beach

was inaugurated after major coastal protection and regeneration works. The magnificent new beach has been thoroughly enjoyed by many. The Government has also invested significantly in the existing tourist infrastructure in the Upper Rock and last year John Cortes and I announced entirely new tourist attractions – we cannot underestimate the gravitational pull of new offerings to the cruise industry, which is so important to our small businesses. In order to increase the number of visitors, the enactment of an amendment to the Immigration Act has allowed for the introduction of tourist visas for some non-EU citizens in order to open up new markets and business opportunities in Morocco, China, India and Russia. And I start to conclude in the way I commenced this interview, which is to look to the present and the future. In respect of employment, my aim is to modernise the employment registration processes at the Employment and Training Board and to place all new systems online. This should not only facilitate the access to information by employees and employers, but empower the staff at the Employment Service to better focus the services they provide the general public. This online functionality should eventually extend to the introduction of a system where the ETB (liaising with the Social Security and Income Tax Offices) becomes a one-stop shop for new employee registration, ensuring that the process for employee registration is made quicker and easier. Another reform that I intend to conclude before the general election comprises an overhaul of the existing Industrial Tribunal dispute resolution and adjudication process. I have already commenced a review of the current system that is in place. In summary, I would like to see the entire process sped up (for the benefit of all parties to a dispute) and to reduce the overall cost. This reform will simplify the Industrial Tribunal appeal process and introduce mandatory conciliation machinery for parties in dispute prior to reaching the tribunal hearing stage. In the meantime, whilst I set about undertaking this reform, I am also making arrangements to reduce the backlog of cases pending before the Industrial Tribunal, as I was able to achieve with the Development Appeals Tribunal. It has been and it continues to be an absolute privilege and honour to serve my community. Whereas it may be true to say that we have worked solidly in the past 3 years and that we have achieved many of the Government’s objectives, I have no doubt that there continues to be a lot to do and I very much look forwarding to continuing our exciting programme for Government.”

Valentine’s Day is just a couple of weeks away now and before you know it, the big day will be at your doorstep. Of course, there are those among us who feel that every day is a celebration of love. We completely concur with that idea. But why miss out on another special opportunity that allows

A Dreamy Room with Candles

This is where candles take over. For those who own a bedroom with a beautiful fireplace, this task becomes even more fun. Instead of worrying about dimmable lights that you do not own, just bring home some candles, which will set the right mood. You can even add a faux fireplace mantle and decorate it with Valentine’s Day-themed candles for a more pleasing visual. Winter will still hold sway by the time February 14th is here. This makes candles an even more enticing decorating option.

you to rekindle your passionate love while the rest of the world gets tangled in a web of scarlet hearts and fanciful flowers? It is the perfect opportunity to take a break from the mundane and let flames fly one more time. And what better place for a magical culmination of the Valentine’s Day celebrations than a dreamy, romantic bedroom? To create a romantic bedroom that plays the grand stage for your magical Valentine’s Day celebrations is not all that hard. In fact, there are plenty of ways in which you can do this on a budget, and extravagant ideas are not the only option. Here are a few simple decorating tips that transform the ambiance of the bedroom and set the mood not just for Valentine’s Day, but any special occasion that you wish to share with that special person…

Hints of Passionate Red

Valentine’s Day and the weeks leading up to it will allow you to shop very easily for plenty of decor items that come in vivacious red. This is a good opportunity to introduce the fiery shade in a subtle fashion in the bedroom. It need not be an expensive purchase and a permanent addition. A pashmina throw, a few pillow covers in silk or even some lovely drapes in red will do. Red has always been viewed as a colour of passion and romance, and if you are not interested in anything else, just bring home some heart-shaped balloons, at the very least.

Re-invent the Bed

With the sheets out of the way, we get to the bed itself. A large bed is a good option, but if you are looking to commit to a more innovative design, there’s nothing like a round bed to truly alter the appeal of a bedroom. Round beds not only look chic, they also add geometric contrast to a room dominated by simple, straight lines. Now could also be the opportune moment to switch over to the four-poster or canopy bed. These beds come with removable tops, allowing you to switch back to the ‘normal mode’ with ease.

Hint of Hollywood Glitz Move Out the Clutter Music in the Air

Is it a part of decorating? Absolutely yes! A hint of music in the air will surely make the moment even more special. Just as in the case of fragrance, this is another time when you dip into the memory bank and pick out that one special tune or song you love. Do not worry too much about the cheesy stereotypes or limit yourself to music that you never cared for in particular. If you, as a couple, love hard rock, then go for it. Both fragrance and sound make the visual picture even more special. The colours seem bolder, the setting more romantic and the moment more memorable! BMAG 54

This next tip doesn’t sound all that romantic, does it? But removing the clutter that surrounds you is not only a prudent interior design tip for every occasion; it is particularly apt when trying to set a beautiful backdrop. No one wants to walk into a bedroom that’s filled with a whole lot of rubbish and decor that is placed in a random fashion. In fact, there are some women who might put your idea of a big celebration on hold and get to cleaning up first! A well-organised room that only sports things you absolutely need is the perfect backdrop. Imagine it as a painting taking shape; no one starts off with a dirty canvas!

Wish to turn up the up heat for this Valentine’s Day by going all the way with an “over the top” bedroom that sweeps your valentine off of his/ her feet? The Hollywood Regency approach is a good template for this. This expansive style does require a bit of extra effort, but the results speak for themselves. Start with changing the drapes and adding curtains that come with a little heart or cupid motif. Add a mirror or two to truly usher in the cinematic look, while plush rugs in white, a grand chandelier and elegantly arranged vases of flowers put the icing on the cake.

Fragrance of Love

Love and romance is all about playing with the senses. It is time to look beyond decorating as a way to create visually pleasing images. When you are adding candles to the room, make sure you get the right scented candles. Fragrance is another great way to make the occasion far more enjoyable. Unlike popular perception though, overwhelming floral fragrances are not always best. Instead we suggest using a scent or perfume that brings back fond memories of those early dates you went on or the first time you met.

Lighting sets the Tone

This is the ideal time to switch from functional lighting to dim, recessed lights. Lighting plays arguably the most important role in determining the mood of a room and the vibe it exudes. When creating a romantic bedroom, think of it as playing with light and shadows. If you already have automated lighting that can switch between pre-programmed moods with ease, then there is little trouble here. If your bedroom is not blessed with the technology, then just take out the focused lighting and turn towards other options for soothing ambient illumination. Again, think simple. The idea is to show that you care – it’s not a test of your DIY skills. Framing your old wedding invite, a few chocolate hearts on the wall or even a CD with their favourite songs neatly placed on the bedside table… Often, the best ideas are the simplest ones!

A Touch of Luxury

Drape your bedroom in fabric that evokes lavishness and snug comfort. Both satin and silk bedding options are pretty popular in this regard. While they might be a touch expensive, you will soon realise that it is well worth the dough. If you are not looking for such high-end sheets and pillow covers, then take the classic approach with white cotton. This is a bedroom look that simply never fails. The greater the thread count and more pure the cotton fabric, the more it will pamper your senses. Once again, try to find that elusive balance between how much you can spend and the affluence you crave.

Show that you Care

We do live in a highly commercial environment, and we’ve gotten to a point where we are often too lazy to even place an order on Amazon or eBay! A future with buildings crafted by 3D printers and robots that do the household chores isn’t really helping in the motivation department either. But this weekend, get off of the couch and craft something that will put a smile on the face of your lover. BMAG 55

The euphoria of the New Year might have waned away with passing weeks, but early February is still the time for making new beginnings and embracing designs trends that will serve you well for the next few months. From beautiful spring collections that promise to drive away the winter blues within no time to sparkling pendant lights that promise to enliven your world, it is the time to treat yourself to the latest decor finds. And as you get ready to give your home a makeover, the hot design trends that are predicted to rule 2015 will aid you in creating an even more smart and fashionable home. This month we take a look at the living room decorating trends that combine a sense of timeless design with the current hot trends to shape a classy and tasteful interior. While some will serve you well for years to come, others promise to bring a dash of excitement and playfulness that will transform your existing living space. Take a look at the top four decorating trends that will shape living rooms in 2015‌

A Splash of Cosy Colour

Gone are the days of the plush living room couch in boring beige, simple white and unassuming grey. It is time add a bit of vibrant colour to the contemporary living room with a colourful sofa that reflects the style of the room. Considering how most modern living rooms already use a neutral backdrop, it is barely surprising that home decorators are turning towards bold couches in bright hues to create an instant focal point in the room. A couch in bright red, sensational blue, daring green or even energising orange will fit in with almost any theme you have going. Picking a classic like the Chesterfield sofa in one of these primary colours is also a safe bet that works in most rooms. And in case you are not happy with just one peppy hue, there are also several multi-coloured options that will steal the show and provide a balance between the traditional and the modern. BMAG 56

Flip over New Trends

Adding a bookcase to the living room might sound like a very simple idea on the surface. But considering the wide array of options you have in regards to stunning, sculptural bookcases and exquisite wall units, it can get a bit overwhelming. Irrespective of the choice you make, ensure that the bookcase becomes an organic and integral part of the living room. It need not be filled with a ton of books right away, though. Give yourself the time to build a collection and use other decorative pieces in the meantime to fill up the empty space. Standalone bookshelves can also be used to demarcate space in an open-floor living area without actually using half-walls.

BMAG 57

Your Three-Legged Buddy!

Rounding up the fantastic four are tripod floor lamps, which have taken the interior design world by a storm in late 2014. This is set to continue through the next year, and you will do well to add one of these cool lighting fixtures to the living room. For most of us, though, space is the biggest issue when we think of tripod floor lamps. Clear out a cool corner or make some extra room by moving the side table at the end of the couch for one of these. A bit of de-cluttering and editing is all you need! If you are blessed with a really large living space, then you can even add an oversized tripod that will set the tone for the rest of the room.

A Gorgeous Gallery Wall

There is something about a collection of picture frames or artwork that turns a normal house into a cosy, inviting home. It is this personal touch a gallery wall brings to the living room that makes it a must have in the contemporary home filled with glazed surfaces and simple, straight lines. There are plenty of ways that you can compose a gallery wall without actually investing in an expensive art collection. Use your favourite family photographs to shape a truly ‘memorable’ accent wall in the living room. Using frames with similar styles and finishes is often the best way forward, as it gives a coherent look to the collection. Framed black and white photographs or monochromatic artwork is another trendy way to shape a gallery wall that will hold the attention of friends and family. This spring, add a colourful backdrop to the framed collection to let it stand out visually. And for those living in a rental home, picture ledges offer a smart alternative that allows you to shape a gallery wall without having to drill any holes to hang the picture frames! BMAG 58

GIBTELECOM AT THE INFORMATION AGE EXHIBITION IN LONDON

Gibtelecom hosted a reception at the Information Age Exhibition in the Science Museum in London on Thursday 8th January 2015. Gibtelecom is believed to be the first to host such a marketing event in the recently established exhibition in the museum, with the reception being attended by some 200 guests representing many communication companies and well known international organisations with whom Gibtelecom partners or does business. Following the Company’s investment in the Europe India Gateway (EIG) submarine cable project, and the commencement of the Company’s extended European network (currently benefitting from points of presence in London, Madrid and Marseille), the main aim of the event was the promotion of Gibtelecom as a small but upcoming player in the global communications market. An appropriate backdrop to the event, the Information Age Exhibition was opened at the end of October 2014 by Her Majesty the Queen, and celebrates 200 years of electronic communications. The exhibition focuses on six networks that have changed the world: the telegraph, the telephone, broadcast (radio and TV), satellites, the mobile and the Internet. The Chief Minister and Gibtelecom Chairman, the Hon Fabian Picardo QC MP, attended the event and in addressing the guests he paid tribute to the Gibtelecom success story and reflected on the ongoing speed of technological innovation. Also speaking at the event, Gibtelecom’s CEO, Tim Bristow, highlighted the opportunities afforded to the Company by its growing international network and what it means to the Company to have joined the worldwide submarine cable family, through which over 95% of global communications traffic travels. He complemented the museum on the wonderful exhibition, and hoped it would be an inspiration for the next generation of communications engineers.

CAVALCADE 2015

As tradition the Gibraltar Cavalcade 2015 took place on Monday 5th January. Hundreds of Gibraltarians flooded Main Street to support all those involved. Committed: Stop focusing on your favourite interest long enough to make your sweetheart the centre of your universe. Dating: Even if you are “just friends” it can be fun to go out on the town. Be sure they are not reading too much into the situation. Single: Valentine’s Day? You have much more important things to care about. Make it a “Me Day” instead. It’s complicated: Don’t make things worse by insisting on being right. A long phone call with an ex can be the high point of the day.

TAURUS

Committed: Close the doors, put on the music, get out the scented oils, and don’t forget feathers... let nature take its course! Dating: If the weather does not permit watching a beautiful sunset, a quiet snuggle in a cosy place can be heaven. Single: Sensual and romantic Venus rules your sign. Going out with more gregarious friends to get you noticed. It’s complicated: You do not do complicated. Life is too short not to keep things simple.

LEO

Committed: Stare into each other’s eyes and share what you like best about each other. Intimacy renews a grand romance. Dating: Whoever is at your side tonight will be lucky. Your megawatt confidence and cheerful attitude light up any room. Single: Vivacious Leo is never single for long. Dress your best and be on the prowl. It’s complicated: If you are involved with someone who is not worshiping the ground you walk upon, it’s time for a change. Next!

SCORPIO

23OCT - 21NOV

Committed: Celebrate with a visit to your favourite source of playthings to spice up your bedroom skills, then seduce your partner. Dating: A nice dinner, a romantic walk, followed by a close encounter in a public place - doing something risky can light your fire. Single: Invite some friends to your favourite social watering hole. You just might find magic across a crowded room. It’s complicated: If you are less interested, you may say something harsh. Watch your words carefully.

Committed: Plan a candlelit dinner, a carriage ride, or float through the canals of Venice. Love is a magic circle. Dating: No matter what sign you are with, you need to touch souls. True love just might walk in the door. Single: Avoid any desire to drown your sorrows. Play your favourite music and explore the world online. Your soul mate is near. It’s complicated: It’s self-torture to be with someone who cannot or will not give you what you need. Next Valentine’s Day will be better.

Committed: This is your opportunity to light the fires of passion. Do something unexpected and exciting. Dating: The biggest gift you can give a love interest is your full attention. Listening is sexy. Single: Congratulations! You can run around like Cupid visiting as many hotties as time and energy allow! It’s complicated: Any partner must appreciate your need to be in touch with all sorts of fascinating friends.

Committed: Eliminate distractions, shower, put on a skimpy outfit, and set the mood with music. Time to experiment! Dating: You know immediately if a relationship is working. If this looks like a match made in heaven, say so. Single: Call friends - getting out and having fun is preferable to staying home. It’s complicated: Are you becoming a victim? Sometimes even Cupid’s arrows cannot pin down a sweetheart.

SAGITTARIUS

22NOV - 21DEC

Committed: Go snowboarding or get in the car and drive 200 miles for dinner. Make this a day to remember! Dating: Tie you up or tie you down? Only you can tell the difference. Grand gestures and big surprises can be great fun! Single: You talk a good game, but maybe you are feeling too claustrophobic to let anyone surround you. Go out and have fun! It’s complicated: Do not panic if you feel like running. You might change your mind tomorrow! Let the romantic sparks fly.

21MAR - 19APR

Committed: Shake things up! Valentine’s Day will be so steamy you might make Venus blush! Dating: One of you wants commitment, but the other is happy to play the field, or at least have the option. You can’t force feelings that aren’t there. Single: All those flowers and kisses might make you feel left out, but you’ll soon be back! Accept any last minute invitation. It’s complicated: You will tell the unvarnished truth. Fights encourage the best sort of making up.

21JUN - 22JUL

Committed: A good marriage is your heart’s home. Plan a special dinner, with you as dessert! Dating: The idea of being in love can override good sense. Do your best not to say the “L” word until you are both comfortable. Single: A pint of ice cream might be your best friend tonight. Spend some time flirting online. It’s complicated: You need to know where you stand. Walk away or make some demands.

Committed: Whatever you like best can spark a night of romance out of your favourite steamy novel. Dating: If you are presented with a secondhand card or pizza and beer, start looking for the door. Single: This is no time to sit at home feeling sorry for yourself! As a big flirt, it is time to go out and show off your skills! It’s complicated: Should you stay or should you go? Your love interest will give you a clear sign that will help you decide.

Committed: Avoid pointing out the obvious and unromantic. Valentine’s Day requires your most passionate words and deeds. Dating: Valentines Day can be either terrifying or a waste of time. If you like someone, say so. Single: You may have no idea how much natural magnetic charisma you possess. Go out in public and you will turn heads. It’s complicated: Are you avoiding the fact that love is passionate, intimate, confusing, and sometimes painful?
