Headbands

There are so many types of headbands that you can create new styles just depending on which kind of headband you use. A skinny headband, for example, can be worn with an edgy updo as an extra accessory for the look. You can even add on two or three for a more high fashion look.

Eugenia Kim Mia Floral Embellished Headband £162.50

Eugenia Kim Milou Rose Gold Plated Headband £167

A headband can also be worn more along the crown or along the forehead for a more bohemian look. This works best with long, flowing locks or a cute, trendy braids. You can go beaded or bejewelled to add some extra flair to your hair. Thick headbands work best just to keep hair out of the face, but when you add embellishment such as a flower or feathers, it can make a look tres chic. I like this idea for a headband and in some instances I think it would be elegant to wear in place of veil for a wedding.

The old standby stretchy headband works well for the gym, but add some sequins or bold colours and you can still get away with wearing it on a casual weekend day. Headbands are just like any other accessory in that you can choose the ones that fit your particular style. They don’t have to pricy or plain; they can be as dramatic and beautiful as you want them to be. Are you a fan of headbands?

By Maxine Sene

Tell us about yourself.

“I grew up for the most part of my life caught between Gibraltar and the UK with family residing in both countries. I actually always loved the idea of travelling from one home to another observing the difference in culture, dialect and fashion. From a very young age I’ve always had a great interest in the Fine Arts, English Literature and film. So there were no surprises when I ended up perusing a career much to do with all that jazz! I love it. Today I work as a stylist and event planner on the continent of style caught between London and Gibraltar. I thoroughly enjoy the process of bringing fashion, art and inspiration into my work for my clients to discover and enjoy. I love the challenge of transforming someone’s wardrobe or decorating a space suited to each individual’s taste. It gives me great pleasure to be able to do what I do on a daily basis. Most people don’t get what it is to be a stylist, so let me tell you! To some it is a mystery, which I love, as I like educating people on style and what importance it has! I like making people feel good about themselves by enhancing someone’s ‘look’ or transforming a wedding venue into the place of their dreams. I believe the way someone carries themselves gives you a lot of information on what that person is about. It would be vain for me to describe myself in that way so I’ll let you be the judge. Although I have been told that I am a slightly eccentric, perhaps because I am a bit of a chameleon when it comes to my own wardrobe, and I love transforming even my own look from time to time - its all part of the drama!”

Where did you go to study? And for how long?

“I studied for 3 years at an Art College in the South of London studying a BA in Fashion Promotion. I was curious to see how it would pan out as I wouldn’t be attending a traditional University like my peers and I remember being intrigued as to what my college mates would be like. Completely mad I hoped! As for London itself, I immediately fell in love with the big smoke during that time. In fact I ended up spending over 7 years there working and studying. During that time I developed a strong bond with the Capital in terms of work and social life. London for me was a great learning curb in terms of growing up and finding myself as a young adult. It is the perfect place to grow an open mind and be yourself without prejudice. That was fundamentally what I got out of it! You will find creative minds from all creative industries coming from different parts of the world doing what they love!”

What is it that you enjoyed about the teaching there?

“I loved how flamboyant my tutors were and how encouraging they would be. It sounds like a cliché but sometimes it felt like I was living in the film, ‘The Dead Poets Society’. I remember being inspired and taught to think outside the box in which we were able to invent and flourish our ideas. A lot was learnt but at the same time it was an entertaining experience with a lot of colourful characters I got to meet along the way!”

BMAG 34

The amazingly talented fashionista, Sean Acris, is totally exposed this month. He explains what the perks of being a stylist are, what his job entails and how travelling has motivated and inspired his creativity.

Have you always been into fashion?

“Yes, from an early age I have always enjoyed fashion, especially ‘fashion styling’ where I experimented with different looks and gradually found my own style. Although it has to be said I am still a bit of a chameleon, as I can get bored easily with the same look. Aside from that, I feel fashion as an entity is important to everyone, as it comments on society as well as reflecting on ones individuality. Fashion has so many facets, and many who may not follow it will probably never understand it. It is an intellectual art built upon a huge industry in this day and age made up of blood sweat and tears. I commend and celebrate those top designers who have made it from rags to riches and have brought vibrancy to catwalks and city streets worldwide.”

What got you into styling?

“I grew up having so many muses; some celebrities that I refer to as style icons or theatre and film. I absolutely love ‘The Talented Mr Ripley’ – Such a chic film! However having an older sister, who loved shopping and glamming up, was probably my main fascination for wardrobe styling. This was when I felt most comfortable as a personal stylist! There were endless recommendations on how to co-ordinate an outfit depending on the occasion, interview or hot date. This all adds up to many hours of long shopping sprees from London to New York and even back home in Gibraltar. I even tend to go window-shopping without a real purpose; it’s a habit more than anything else. I love the discovery, whether it is just one item to compliment an outfit or creating an entire capsule collection to suit the current season. I just can’t take my eyes off the catwalks and what people wear when they walk down the street. I like to ‘people watch’, typically outside a café with big shades on with the occasional tilt if I am enthusiastic about the look.”

Do you think fashion is too commercial now?

“There are moments when it feels that way. However you have got to appreciate that fashion is like art or music for that matter. It is a reflection of society and people’s attitudes. Some want to follow the trends whilst others want to be the trendsetters. Regardless you always see people dress and change their look all the time according to what is happening in the world. All you need to do is look back in history to find out why people wore certain outfits; it is not as random as people may think. Fashion can become commercial only if a trend becomes stale and we aren’t seeing anything new around.”

What would be the typical day of a fashion stylist?

“Like everyone else I wake up in the morning but I may spend a little longer on grooming, which I am not shy to say - some friends have called it, ‘The Ritual’. Aside from the mundane, I approach each day with ears and eyes open to new stories, trends and ideas. This is not just about catwalk trends necessarily, it is also about looking out for new art, music and topics in the news that affect our culture. I also always read up style blogs and must have a copy of Vogue or Arena Homme Plus for Mens fashion. I am addicted to Pinterest and I love collecting images and creating mood boards that evoke a new sense of style to inspire myself and others who follow me.”

What does your job entail, in a nutshell?

“I am there to inspire people, to educate them on style and bring out their own personality whether it be for their wardrobe or their wedding day. It is not about enforcing a particular style on them. Its about bringing out their own style and joy for love and life. I think style is something, which is quite personal according to your own taste and it’s all about how you feel but realising what suits you and knowing yourself. It’s quite a magical thing!”

In your opinion, where is the capital of fashion?

“Paris all the way! There is a quiet elegance about the Parisians that makes their city the capital of the fashion world without a doubt. They don’t throw their concept of style in your face, it is in their blood and definitely apart of their culture which makes it such a fabulous place to visit if you are a true fashionista. Visit Paris and you will know exactly what I mean.”

How do you spot trends?

“Trends are easy to spot once you notice something has been over done. You look at an old trend and then suddenly you see something bring new life to something completely different! It can be quite radical, modern or retro but you know it hasn’t been brought into the mainstream yet and you identify it as a new trend almost within a first glance. You see the following then become real and the trend brought to life until the next original trendsetter comes around the corner. However the best trends are those that end up timeless and brought back now and again.”

What would you tell anyone who wanted to break into the field?

“Work hard, be yourself and let go of any inhibitions. You must think outside the box. Know the rules and break them but most of all have a business head on your shoulders and have direction. You need to be your own boss and believe 100% in yourself and the creativity will flow and people will appreciate that what you are selling is real.”

If you weren’t a fashion designer what would you do instead?

“I would mostly likely be on the West End entertaining crowds, as I love to dress up and perform and make people laugh!”

Tell us one of the important principles you learned from your family?

“My immediate family have always taught me to be true to myself! I believe I am.”

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

“Happiness for me is a world that understands one another without prejudice of religion, sexual preference or race. Imagine if this was our world today! What a different place it would be.” BMAG 35

What is your greatest fear?

“Loosing my loved ones.”

Which living person do you most admire?

“I admire my father a lot for his courage, good will and determination. At the age of 70 he climbed the mountains in Peru - Matupichu. He has unbelievable amount of energy and despite any mishaps he remains strong and has always offered me strength and I believe he always offers me the best advice possible!”

Which talent would you most like to have?

“I would love to be able to sing. However I am aware that this is not a talent of mine so you are all warned if you ever catch me signing!”

What do you achievement?

consider

is

your

greatest

“Styling Fiona Bruce for her Christmas Special on Sky News last year. It was a real joy!”

Where would you like to live?

“San Francisco. Why not? I probably wouldn’t get much work done though! Haha.”

What is your most treasured possession?

“My Michael Kors prescription frames! They are definitely the best thing I bought this year. I cannot go out without them.”

What do you most value in your friends?

“Their sincerity, the ability to listen to me ramble on, and most of all make me laugh. The one thing I will say that all my very good friends have in common is they are all talented / mad creatives and perhaps a little rebellious which makes them fun to be around!”

If you could travel back in time when and where would you travel?

“Take me back to the 1970’s where it was all about freedom and being completely boho! This seems to be the most stress free era where everyone seemed to be a lot more zen and loving.”

What is the most precious gift you have given to someone?

“Well it may sound silly but I remember buying quite an inexpensive straw trilby sometime back, which I thought suited me as I rarely wear hats. And so I had a dear friend of mine, Daniel, who took a liking to it and I asked if he could borrow it! I gave it to him and said, “It suits you far more than it does me, it’s yours!”

What is your personal quote or motto that you live by?

“Be alive. Don’t be boring. Be kind.”

If you could go back and start your life over again, what one thing would you do differently?

“I honestly wouldn’t change a thing, as life experiences are what make you the person you are today. I feel content with the decisions I have made and I live without regret. (But maybe I wouldn’t of worn a couple of horrendous outfits haha!)”

Final words to the readers of B Mag.

“Thank you for reading and keep yourself posted with my monthly style articles. Remember to stay cool! The best is yet to come.” BMAG 36

Horror-Scopes LIBRA

23SEP - 220CT

In Astrology, Libra is the sign of partnering up and Halloween should be no exception! If you can get your hubby, wife or best friend to go along with it, dress as your favourite celebrity couple, or get gory as an undead bride and groom! For more independent Libras, lean on your sign’s love of style and beauty and glam it up as a beauty pageant queen or your favourite Gossip Girl character.

SCORPIO

OCTOBER 2014

23OCT - 21NOV

Deep and dark, no other sign connects with the mysterious side of Halloween quite like yours, Scorpio. Ruled by the planet Pluto, the “Lord of the Underworld,” your sign was downright made to be a zombie this Halloween. Crawling out from beneath the Earth in your finest decomposed, brain-craving fashion, your zombie costume is sure to capture your secretive, shadowy style!

Some strong magnetism exists between you and someone you meet this Halloween. You’re expected to join in with social events. If you aren’t in the mood, don’t feel obliged to participate.

You might feel it’s time for a change. A series of events will make you realise it is time to take on new long-term commitments probably of the professional kind. This will put you on a new career path and you will start to feel more optimistic for the future.

CAPRICORN

AQUARIUS

22DEC - 19JAN

Every zodiac sign rules a different part of the body, and you Capricorns sure do luck out come Halloween: your sign rules the bones! Your go-to costume? A skeleton of course. But Capricorn is also associated with work and public status, so getting down in the trenches and going as a construction worker or fire fighter would be right up your alley. Or opt for a wellknown figure like business VIP Donald Trump, music mogul Jay-Z or status-loving socialite Paris Hilton.

20JAN - 18FEB

Out-there Aquarius is connected with the cosmos, so your spacey energy would take a top-notch alien or astronaut costume to the next level. Or, go for broke and hit the town as your favourite Star Trek or Star Wars character. But if you prefer to keep your feet here on solid ground, draw from Aquarius’ rebellious nature and go all out as a 1920s flapper, a ‘60s and ‘70s hippie or an ‘80s punk rocker.

Creativity flows and there’s a lot of passion in the air this Halloween. A friend or loved-one’s reaction to a question or proposal you put to them might surprise you. Be sure to keep your promises.

Don’t let your enthusiasm for life and enjoyment tempt you to overspend. You will have fun even if you are careful about expenses. You might detect a hint of deceit or dishonesty this month. All is not as it first appears.

ARIES

TAURUS

21MAR - 19APR

Aries is the courageous warrior of the zodiac, so this Halloween, why not channel your go-getter spirit as a daring superhero? Take a cue from your favourite comic book or movie and wear your colours proudly as Wonder Woman, Batman, Ironman, Resident Evil’s Alice, or your favourite X-Men character. Or, take a little inspiration from the homemade suits you saw in Kickass and come up with an original, one-of-a-kind superhero that’s all about you!

20APR - 20MAY

Known for its alluring, luxurious and long-lasting nature, Taurus just screams vampire! Not only do these carnal creatures lure their next meal with the same grace and sophistication your sign represents, but also the enduring quality of Taurus synchs right up with a vampire’s immortality. And here’s the real icing on the cake: each zodiac sign rules a different part of the body, and oh-so-conveniently, Taurus happens to rule the neck - a vampire’s dream!

You should get together with friends and others at a Halloween party. Make sure to wear a striking costume. Just because you like someone is no reason to let them make your decisions for you. You may have to make the first move. Something you’ve been aiming for is almost within reach. Some good times are near for you, and you can definitely see the light at the end of this long dark tunnel.

Change challenges you. You’re never at ease when circumstances are shifting and right now some important things are going on in your life. You seem not to have time for parties, but you should at least make an appearance. It won’t be easy and there are a few mountains you will have to climb but you have the energy and stamina to cope. Persevere, and you will triumph in time.

CANCER

LEO

21JUN - 22JUL

Your zodiac sign is all about nostalgia, Cancer, so think back to your childhood and bring back your love for Spongebob Squarepants, Sesame Street or Super Mario this Halloween! Cancer also happens to be the major foodie of the zodiac, so dressing as an M&M or a gigantic banana, hot dog or pizza slice couldn’t be more perfect - and if your friends have any sense of humour whatsoever, you’re sure to be a hit. You’re feeling lucky at this time. Dreams are vivid around Halloween. People visit you in your dreams; some faces you will recognise, others will be unfamiliar. Your outlook will improve after a message received and new areas of your personal life are opening up for you.

23JUL - 23AUG

News flash: Leo is the zodiac’s superstar! No other sign can pull off a great celebrity getup quite like you can. After all, your sign is ruled by nature’s biggest spotlight: the Sun! But whether you choose something wild like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry or Lindsay Lohan, or you want to rock as your favourite member of Kiss, just do your best to stay out of the tabloids, okay? You always want to look your best and you might meet someone around this time who introduces you to a new diet or exercise program. It might sound like you will get fit the easy way but there’s probably more to it than others are making out. Even so, if you want to make a difference this is a good time to make an effort to get in shape.

SAGITTARIUS

22NOV - 21DEC

Get out there, Sagittarius! As the biggest traveller of the zodiac, lean on your adventurous spirit and sail the high seas as a ruthless pirate this Halloween. Or, look to other cultures for inspiration: expand your boundaries as a stealth ninja or blushing geisha, a sassy senorita or even your favourite Italian sensation from the exotic, far-off lands known as the Jersey Shore. Better start stockpiling orange makeup and hair gel. Someone is up to some imaginative fun and frolics. Could that someone be you? The more flexible your plans at this time the more you will enjoy yourself. A friend is grateful for a tip you’re willing to give them.

PISCES

19FEB - 20MAR

Watery Pisces is ruled by the planet Neptune, the planet of dreams and fantasies, which makes your Halloween costume a breeze! From Alice in Wonderland to Cinderella to Rapunzel, fairytale and storybook costumes are your thing. Of course a fairy is always a safe bet for Halloween too - sweet and sparkly or moody and mischievous, it’s your pick! But if the fantasy world isn’t your thing, you can always honour the artistic side of your sign and dress as your favourite artist - painter, writer, actor, musician; whatever inspires your inner creativity. There’s something really spooky going on and you can’t help thinking like that. You’re more sensitive to atmosphere and there may be one or two moments this Halloween when you will be convinced you’ve seen a real ghost.

GEMINI

21MAY - 20JUN

Gemini is the sign of the Twins, so grab your bestie and partner up this Halloween as twins, or take it one step further and dress as Siamese twins! If you’d rather go it alone, you can always channel Gemini’s two-sided nature into a costume just for you: think half-man/halfwoman, or try half-angel/half-devil. Some interesting days are ahead. At Halloween, something extravagant and a little bizarre will make for a more mysterious evening. You get the chance to make some interesting new alliances and Cupid could also be involved. Be prepared for surprises!

VIRGO

24AUG - 22SEP

Studious Virgo, you can always get away with a classic librarian or nerd costume, or you could become your favourite character from the long list of books you’ve probably read! Harry Potter, Twilight, Hunger Games... they’re all packed with characters just waiting to be brought to life this Halloween. But Virgo is also an Earth sign that’s strongly connected to nature, so if you’d prefer a sweet ladybug or bumblebee or a sly little fox or skunk costume, you’re definitely the sign to pull it off! A friend or neighbour appreciates your practical and careful personality. They might be planning a special event for this Halloween and with your help all will come together perfectly. You have a great way of keeping things calm and orderly when chaos threatens

CONFESSIONS OF ... Hobbies:

Football, squash and music (although it’s more a lifestyle than a hobby)

Ambition:

I hope to be able to propel to stardom with my band Jetstream and to have thousands of people from across the globe relate to the words of our songs

Are you taken or single? Taken

Are you a morning person?

My new shifts at work require me to start at 6am, which means I’ve had to become a morning person, but I detest it

Describe yourself in 5 words:

Passionate, protective, dedicated, grounded and simply me!

Most embarrassing moment:

As a teenager playing football I tried to impress a girl by scoring a goal. When I tried executing the shot I somehow tripped over the ball and landed hard on my back. She left the scene heckling in laughter whilst I lay on the ground motionless... Impressive!

If you were lucky enough to win the lottery, what would you do?

I’d make sure my family and close ones are sorted and I’d spend the rest in a top notch home recording studio and travelling the world

If you were the President for a day, what would you change in the world?

I’d be the legitimate modern day Robin Hood. Take money from those who have in excess and give to those who need it most. Make the world a little more balanced

Nolan Frendo AGE: 28

What one thing you don’t leave home without: I never leave home without a guitar plectrum

If you were caught in a fire and had to choose between saving your pet and new TV, what would you choose?

I don’t have pets, so I’m left with the TV. However, I have valuable guitars, which I’d save in a flash!

Would you rather have super strength or super intelligence? Intelligence! Strength can only get you so far

Would you rather have the power to be invisible or the power to read minds?

One of my bad features is wanting to know what everyone thinks, so I’d prefer being a mind reader, although being invisible could have its perks

Last holiday:

Went to Rome with my other half and it was splendid

Worst habit:

I have bad traits... Habits not so much

Favourite way to spend a Sunday:

Sat on my sofa watching as much football on TV as humanely possible
