“Gibraltar, Gibraltar, the rock on which I stand. May you be forever free, Gibraltar, my own land…” It’s September and it’s National Day 2014! Every 10th September Gibraltarians eagerly sport the colours of the flag to express their patriotism, but one man in particular sees National Day as if it were Christmas… a big festive holiday. He says, “…we have worked so hard and been through so much as a community, and on National Day all that seems to shine through. It’s a great feeling when I see the streets full of so many youngsters celebrating, and it’s reassuring that our future will be secure in their hands…” From taking down the European flag at the frontier, countless number of charity works to his involvement with St. Martins School, the Laguna Estate Association Social Club and an active member of the Voice of Gibraltar Group (VOGG), Mr Julio Pons is a man of the people of Gibraltar. He is well known for concerning himself with the interests of Gibraltarians and as National Day approaches, Julio discusses why this day is so special to him and why he thanks General Franco for creating our Gibraltarian identity. Turn to the centre pages for his exclusive interview with B Mag, ‘Totally Exposed’. Now that summer is coming to an end there are lots of reasons to love your pale skin, if that’s what nature blessed you with. Yet many pale-skinned people think that their natural skin colour is unattractive, and spend time and money changing their skin tone with fake tan. Or worse still, they risk their health by tanning in the sun. Yet there’s absolutely nothing wrong with being pale. Turn to page 22 for ‘7 Reasons to Love Your Pale Skin’. Into some fashion, some women are just born with an eye for style. Sure, it makes us a little jealous that they manage to pull off just about any trend with what seems like zero effort, but if there’s one thing we know about fashionable women, it’s that they’ve got their own tips and tricks to staying stylish through it all. Turn to pages 16-17, ‘10 Secrets Every Stylish Woman Should Know’ and pick up a few pointers from these notable style setters on how to turn any outfit into a fashion-forward look. Another summer highlight was the Wedding Dress Competition 2014. Gianna Dalmedo was announced the winner of the 9th consecutive edition of the competition, Rosa Sanchez was awarded 1st runner-up whilst Karla Imossi was won 2nd runner-up. With fantastic entertainment by Danza Academy, Corinne Cooper, a fashion show from Diamond Occasion, not forgetting the ten beautiful brides, Glamour Creations managed to pull yet another fantastic show. It’s in the Jeans

When it comes to fashion, nothing defines us better than denim. Denim has come a long way since its humble, hard-working beginning and it continues to outgrow its working-class appeal for a more chic approach. The robust cotton-twill fabric has since been re-imagined countless ways since its inception and has become more than just your favourite pair of perfectly worn Levi’s.

American Apparel Denim Bomber Jacket £78

Considering the sheer prevalence of styles available to us right now, it’s no wonder that throughout the last decade or so jeans have emerged as wear-anywhere essentials, as opposed to the basic, casual, anti-establishment staples they once were. From shorts and skirts, to coloured and artfully-printed styles-not to mention broken-in jackets, vests, and overalls, we’ve taken denim to a whole new, staggeringly broad level. Every autumn, purchasing a new pair of denim has felt like a ritual to welcome the new season, but what about your favourite, loyal baby blues that continue to stand the test of time? Everyone has them. Whether they’re those lived-in boyfriend jeans or ultra-trendy skinnies, it’s clear denim is the go-to material for cool, casual style.

By Maxine Sene Photos by Ulookfierce.com In its 9th consecutive edition, the Wedding Dress Competition has managed to entertain hundreds with a creative production and a very strong group of brides. This year’s competition attracted ten beautiful brides competing for the title on Friday 15th August at the Alameda Open Air Theatre, which was decorated for the occasion by Orchid Events 49. Not forgetting Little Party Planet who also helped with the decoration at the entrance of the theatre with a spectacular balloon arch. The fairy lights lit up the stage perfectly, creating a romantic scene as the sun set behind the audience. Opening up the show and setting the mood for the rest of the evening was Danza Academy with their exquisite dance performance to the acoustic version of the song ‘Firework’ by Katy Perry. Presenter for the night, Andy Coumbe, followed the performance by introducing the judges for the night. First of all was dress designer Priscilla Sacramento, local personality Henry Sacramento, followed by Cynthia Eagle, Miss Glamour 2006 and last years 1st runner-up to the Wedding Dress Competition Noelle Lopez and lastly, fashion stylist and consultant at Ulookfierce.com Monique Perera. Before the first set of brides took to the stage, Andy also called upon two lovely young men; Richard Cardona and Ryan Rodriguez to accompany the gorgeous brides, assisting them throughout the show. The first bride to walk down the stage was Leyre Bear, followed by Gianna Dalmedo and Tyrene Edwards. The lovely Corinne Cooper kept the show entertained whilst the second set of brides got ready backstage with a breath taking performance of the song ‘The First Time I Saw Your Face’ by Celine Dion. Brides Giovanna Gomez, Tyrenne Gonzalez, Karla Imossi and Diana Sampere took the stage next and were the last brides to be seen in the first half of the show.

The audience was in for an extra treat as they had the pleasure of sitting through a fashion show, modelling the elegant and chic dresses of Diamond Occasions’ new collection. The girls modelling in the show consisted of Miss Glamour contestants from previous years, young girls and a very special guest appearance by Director and Producer of Glamour Creations, Bianca Zammit with her two-year-old daughter taking to the catwalk for the very first time, and may I say in a very professional manner with hand on hip throughout her walk, Sofia Lauren. Bride Rosa Sanchez opened up the second half of the show as she took her walk down the stage, followed by Veronica Sulawa and Jayney Teese. Before the judges had to decide what their favourite dress of the night would be, they got to see all the brides on stage for one last time. From feathered tops, to embroidered lace bodies, to low and open backs, all dresses were different in every single way, but all brides showed poise, elegance and looked stunning on stage. Whilst the judges deliberated, Corrine Cooper braced the stage once more and gave another amazing performance to Whitney Huston’s ‘I Have Nothing’. Danza Academy dancer Julia Horne (Dream Girl of the Year 2014) also gave a spectacular solo performance dressed in white to the song ‘Arms of an Angel’, which was choreographed by Zuleika Green. The moment they had all been waiting for arrived as the brides all joined on stage along with Director and Producer of Glamour Creations Bianca Zammit and last year’s winner, Giovanca Afzan, who would award the winners with their trophies and bouquets. Karla Imossi was awarded 2nd runner-up, Rosa Sanchez was awarded 1st runner-up and Gianna Dalmedo was announced the winner of the Wedding Dress Competition 2014.

Delicate chiaroscuro gowns offer a subtler interpretation of autumn’s artistic mood. Crafted in feather light sheers, enriches with precious detail, the results are elegant, ethereal, exquisite. Autumn’s heirloom gowns need no further embellishment, so forgo jewellery, and keep hair and makeup simple. These dresses provide all the drama you need. Lace, embroidery, beading and feathers this trend encompasses the most decadent detailing.

Some women are just born with an eye for style. Sure, it makes us a little jealous that they manage to pull off just about any trend with what seems like zero effort, but if there’s one thing we know about fashionable women, it’s that they’ve got their own tips and tricks to staying stylish through it all. Pick up a few pointers from these notable style setters on how to turn any outfit into a fashionforward look.

3 - Maxi Dresses Work at Any Height

1 - Show Personality in Your Shoes at Work Freshen up your work wear with an interesting shoe and a trouser or hemline that shows it off. Jessica Alba’s professional-chic look works because it doesn’t distract us, but still shows personality.

2 - Pair Neutral Makeup with Bright Styles Designer Tory Burch models a look from her line with a nude lip and neutral makeup. Perfection.

Rachel Zoe is on the petite side and has been spotted in more maxi dresses than we can count. In a 2011 interview, on style for momsto-be, Zoe recommended column-style maxis, as they’re effortlessly chic and can easily be belted.

Designer Tory Burch models a look from her line with a nude lip and neutral makeup. Perfection.

4 - Trends Look Best with Confidence Want to be able to rock a Pharrell-esque hat and look cool while doing so? Take a cue from style maven June Ambrose and trust that it looks good. Also, don’t overwhelm the look with too many trends so that your main trend can shine, not clash. BMAG 16

5 - Monochrome Works in Any Colour Don’t keep colour strictly in the accent category. Monochromatic looks give off a clean, chic vibe that elongates the frame, be it red (as seen on Victoria Beckham), blue, pink, black, white or whatever shade you choose.

6 - Transform Your Look with Accessories Joan Rivers isn’t new to the limelight or style. She’s been designing for decades and you’ll notice that Joan is rarely without either a statement necklace or scarf. In fact, many of her outfits are quite similar, but it’s the accessories that make it look fresh and styled.

9 - Balance Out Skin Exposure 7 - Wear Your Outfit, Don’t Let It Wear You Less may really be more as model Chanel Iman demonstrates. Clean lines and neutrals allow you to shine, not the outfit. After all, it’s supposed to make you look good, not serve as a distraction.

8 - Keep It Classic Want a sure-fire way to look good, not over-trendy or trying too hard? You can’t go wrong with the classics.

There’s a right way and a wrong way to bare a little flesh. To start, keep it at a minimum and pick an area to show. The more exposed one area, the more covered up other parts should be to balance it out. Katharine McPhee shows a tasteful hint of skin with a crop top and sheer stripes, without showing off too much.

10 - When in Doubt, Opt for All-Black Chic for wherever your day takes you, an all-black outfit fits almost any setting and comes in handy when you’re not quite sure of the dress code. A good set of brows like Cara Delevingne’s helps, too.

Is the Make-Under

the New

Makeover? The A-listers who were known for their ultra-glam, high-octane beauty looks only to have swapped them out for a more pared-down aesthetic.

Another A-lister who used to favour the high-octane red carpet beauty looks, is Cheryl Cole. The Geordie beauty was no stranger to lashings of eyeliner and bronzer. But fast forward a few months and Chezza has well and truly ditched that look for a more natural skin tone, glossy lips and leaving all the drama to her long lashes.

Angelina Jolie used to love a vampy red lip on the red carpet, complete with sultry smokey eyes and paler-than-pale skin. But in recent months, we’ve noticed the mum of six has changed up her vampy beauty routine and is now more at home on the red carpet with a subtle hint of tan, fluttery lashes and a nude gloss instead.

Thick spidery lashes, lashings of eyeliner and a perfectly sculpted foundation routine were the order of the day for Cher Lloyd when she first broke onto the music scene. Now though, her look is all together more natural. Whilst the thick, fluttery lashes are still firmly in situ, the rest of her beauty look has been toned down.

There are barely any words for this makeup look Christina Aguilera donned a couple of years ago. I mean it even included brown lip liner, for pity’s sake! After announcing her second pregnancy earlier this year, Xtina looked back to her best with a much more fresh-faced approach to her makeup bag.

Daenaerys? Are you in there? Ah, there she is! Game Of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke doesn’t need a thick slick of makeup to shine on the red carpet and so we’re glad that she now opts for a more natural approach.

BMAG 18

Another musician who was constantly pushing the envelope where her red carpet beauty was concerned was Ke$ha. Thick kohl-lined eyes and blue lipstick were just some of the more notable looks she’s plumped for over the years. So, imagine our surprise when Ke$ha debuted gorgeous pastel pink hair and wonderfully natural-looking makeup recently.

Nicki Minaj’s pepto-pink lipstick and platinum blonde wig are practically synonymous with the rapper’s look. So imagine our surprise when Minaj plumped for this totally gorgeous all-natural look. With sleek glossy hair and barely-there makeup, we’re loving her new look.

Metallic lips and eyebrows? We’re not even sure where Lady Gaga could go from here... But it transpired that the most shocking beauty look the singer could plump for was actually this ultra-natural and super-stripped back one. Looking gorgeous with just a hint of mascara, we’re loving this new look on Gaga.

Pammy Anderson is known for the big smokey eyes and platinum blonde locks. But since growing out her pixie crop in recent months, the former Baywatch babe has eschewed the bold eye makeup looks for this slightly pared down version. We like!

The Saturdays are known for their ultra-glam looks on the red carpet. But in recent months, Mollie King has eschewed the big hair and bold makeup looks in lieu of something a little more natural.

Pixie Lott’s never been afraid of experimenting with her beauty looks but the thick, smokey eyes have always been a mainstay on the blonde bombshell. That was until this year, of course. Pixie gave herself a bit of a make-under with this au naturel look and gorgeous beachy hair.

BMAG 20

1. IT’S NATURAL One of the top reasons to love your pale skin is that it’s your natural skin colour. What’s so wrong with being the way you are? Your skin is this colour for a reason, which your ancestors come from a colder country. So wherever you live now, it’s wise to be careful in the sun and stick to your natural pale skin. It’s fine to be pale, it really is.

2. STRIKING Pale skin can look very striking, especially if you have darker hair. I love the combination of pale skin, blue/green eyes and darker hair. This kind of contrast is much more flattering than a fake tan. So many women cover themselves with fake tan that it makes them look like everyone else. Wouldn’t you rather look like an individual, instead of looking like a faketanned clone?

3. LOVE YOUR OWN SKIN Do you think you should hate someone because they have darker skin? Why dislike your own skin because it’s pale? Why not love yourself as you are? Although it’s nowhere near as serious as racism, this underlying dislike of pale skin is still worrying. Pale-skinned women are made fun of and told they look ill, or convince themselves that it looks awful. It’s ridiculous. Love your skin, whatever its shade.

4. WANTING TO BE DIFFERENT? We are all the colour we are for a reason. Yet women with lighter skin want to darken theirs, and women with darker skin wish theirs was lighter. It’s crazy. Every skin colour is beautiful. It’s a waste of energy to wish that your skin colour was different. You are what you are.

5. HISTORY You may think that a tan is desirable and looks better, but the popularity of tanning is a relatively recent thing. Not so long ago, women went to great lengths to avoid a tan, as only the lower classes were tanned! They would cover themselves up, wear a hat, and carry a parasol to shield themselves from the sun. Now we’ll do anything to get a tan. It’s just our perception that’s changed.

6. AVOID PREMATURE AGING Sunbathing may make you look good (or so you think), but that short-term gain will cost you in the long run. Someone who’s a sun-worshipper will age much faster than someone who stays in the shade. We all have to age in the end, but why give yourself wrinkles before your time?

7. FAKING IT IS A PAIN Photo by Joanna Kustra

BMAG 22

Finally, the idea of using fake tan is a pain to me. Even if I wanted to get a tanned look, I don’t think I could be bothered with all the hassle. The time it takes, the expense, the smell, the tan lines… just not worth it in my book.

Do you need to know some of the ways to keep your hair healthy when you’re pregnant? Your hair may be in great condition, as the pregnancy hormones mean that you’re not shedding as you normally would. Some women find that their hair is more difficult during pregnancy though, and some treatments are best avoided, especially during your first trimester. Here are some of the ways to keep your hair healthy while you’re pregnant.

CHEMICALS

One of the ways to keep your hair healthy while you’re pregnant is to avoid chemicals. Some doctors think it’s ok to have your hair relaxed or permed during pregnancy; others think you should wait until after your first trimester or avoid chemical treatments altogether. Perhaps it’s better to play it safe by avoiding these treatments altogether.

COLOURING

If you normally colour your hair, especially if you want to cover any grey hairs, you may want to maintain that routine while you’re pregnant. It’s not clear whether there’s any risk with permanent dyes or not, but a safer bet is to use a semi-permanent, vegetable dye, or henna. You could also opt for highlights, as the colour won’t touch your skin.

DIET

The main reason why it’s important to eat well during pregnancy is for the health of your baby, but a good diet will also benefit your hair. Feeding your growing child takes a lot out of your body, and your hair will be of secondary importance. So make sure that you eat a healthy diet. Eat whole grains, fruit and vegetables, and lean protein, and avoid comfort eating.

CONDITIONING

You may find that your hair is drier than normal. If this happens, give it a weekly conditioning treatment. This will also be a chance to pamper yourself; enjoy a warm soak in the bath while the conditioner does its work. If necessary, switch your shampoo to one that is more moisturising as well as giving your hair this conditioning treatment.

HAIR BREAKAGE

You may find that your hair is prone to breakage during your pregnancy. Again, this is because of the hormonal changes occurring in your body. It can be exacerbated by heat, so let your hair dry naturally or use a low setting on your dryer. Use a deep conditioner and get your hair trimmed regularly to help keep your hair healthy.

PREPARE FOR SHEDDING

The downside of not losing hairs during the pregnancy is that you’ll lose them a few months after the baby is born. So be prepared for this to happen. It can seem as though you’re losing far too much, but that’s simply because your hair is catching up with its normal growth cycle. Don’t worry that you’re losing too much.

TESTING

If you do decide to colour your hair, it’s wise to test out the colour on a strand of hair first. Your hair may not react the same way during pregnancy, so even if you’ve used the same colour before, you could get a different result. Play it safe before you commit your whole head.

Hair can be really funny during pregnancy. You may even find that your normally straight hair becomes curly when you’re pregnant, and vice versa. If that happens, enjoy the change! BMAG 26

7 Reasons why Turning

30 is Amazing

Turning 30 is something that most people dread, and I don’t understand why. They worry that they’re getting old, and that the best part of their life is behind them. I think the opposite. I’m actually having the best time of my life now I’m over 30! Here are some reasons why turning 30 is actually pretty wonderful…

4. YOU KNOW YOURSELF After you turn 30, you know yourself pretty well. You know what matters to you in life and discard anything that doesn’t work for you. Why waste time on things you don’t enjoy and that don’t bring you anything? You’re also sure about what you want from relationships, and wouldn’t dream of putting up with any bad treatment.

5. 30 IS THE NEW …

1. CONFIDENCE

Our perception of 30 has changed over recent decades, and women in their thirties are leading very different lives from their mothers or grandmothers at the same age. We wear what we like, and refuse to be defined by our age. At 30, many women are starting a family or are happy with their decision not to have one. It’s changed so much.

The best thing that I’ve noticed about turning 30 is that your confidence shoots up massively. I feel ten times more self-assured than I did when I was younger. In fact, I wasn’t very confident at all. But now I’m full of confidence - and my over-30 friends report the same thing. It’s fantastic being thirty-something.

6. IT’S STILL YOUNG

2. YOU DON’T CARE WHAT OTHER PEOPLE THINK When you’re younger, you worry a lot about what other people think of you. You even let it govern your decisions; you may not do things you really want to do because of what people might say. By the time you’re over 30, you just do whatever you want, and take no notice of other people’s opinions. They are irrelevant. The only opinion that truly matters is your own.

3. YOU APPRECIATE LIFE By the time you hit your thirties, you’ve usually been through a few challenges. Life will have been quite difficult at times. But that tends to make you feel pretty grateful for the positive things you have. You really appreciate your life and have a much more positive outlook.

BMAG 30

30 is still young. You’re old enough to have acquired some wisdom, and young enough to be active - and have plenty of time ahead of you. I’ve done a lot more since I turned 30 than I ever did in the years before. And I know I have a lot more time to achieve more.

7. YOU’VE LEARNED A LOT Finally, when you get to 30 you’ve already learned a lot. You know what you do and don’t want, what your priorities are, and that you can cope with so much more than you ever though you could. You acquire a sense of security in yourself and yet there is still so much more to discover. It’s an adventure!

So remember the old saying ‘Life begins at 30’ - it really can do, if you embrace a positive outlook. If you feel anxious about hitting that landmark birthday, I can assure you that there is no need to worry at all. I love it!

7 Tips

for Applying

You might think that you don’t need any tips for applying blush. All you have to do is dab your brush on your blush and put it on your cheeks, right? But it’s easy to apply too much blush or put it in the wrong place. Try these tips for applying blush to make sure that you’re not blushing for the wrong reasons.

The first of my tips for applying blush is to pick the right shade for your skin. The wrong shade will stand out far too much. You want to complement your skin, not contrast it. A good guide for choosing the correct shade is to gently slap your skin. You want to look like you’re slightly flushed, so this will show you how your skin will look.

Less is more with most cosmetics, and especially with blusher. Slap on too much and you’ll end up with an obvious stripe or look like a clown. Apply a little each time; you can always build it up if you want more. But you don’t want to overdo it and have to cover your mistake - or start again from scratch.

Using the correct formulation will help your blush stay on for longer. But should you use cream or powder blush? Cream works very well for mature or dry skin, whereas powder blush is best for oily skin. Oily skins can also use gel or liquid blush. Avoid stains if you have dry skin. BMAG 32

You want to apply your blusher to the apples of your cheeks. But how do you find out where these are? Simply smile, and you’ll see them pop up. Maintain the smile while you apply your blush so that you can see where it should go.

The tiny little brush that comes with the product is ok if you’re touching up your makeup away from home, but pretty useless otherwise. Invest in a proper blusher brush to apply your blush at home. You need one that’s slightly tapered, so that the blush isn’t applied in an even circle. A cheap brush won’t give a good result, so splash out a bit if you want your makeup to look good.

You may have been taught to put your blush on sweeping upwards. The trouble with this is that you can end up with lines of blush, which won’t look terribly natural. Instead, use a circular movement, sweeping the colour round your cheeks. Tap the brush first to remove excess colour. Apply more until you’re happy, then blend with a clean brush.

Finally, apply your cosmetics in the right order. Generally, blusher should be applied after foundation. You should then set it with translucent powder. Applying blusher before foundation risks hiding or smudging your blush.

Blusher is a fantastic cosmetic for adding just a hint of colour and making your skin look fresher and younger (who doesn’t want to look younger!). So it’s worth taking a little time to make sure that it looks just right.

“I have supported many local charities throughout the years and taken part in a lot of charity work in order to raise money. I’m the Chairman of the charity organisation called Help Us to Help Them, which enables us to help people with disabilities that are in need of assistance. I have been very involved in St. Martins School on a daily basis and have been doing so for over 34 years. I am also the Chairman of the Laguna Estate Association Social Club. In the year 2000 we were finally able to open the Laguna Estate Social Club, where I help charities organise bingo events to raise money for their cause. Lastly I am also an active member of the Voice of Gibraltar Group (VOGG).”

What activities have you done to raise money for charity?

“There are so many! The first thing I did to raise money was when I walked around the rock for 24 hours with Mr Gerada. I also did a basketball shooting event at the Land Port pitch where I was shooting baskets nonstop for 24 hours. I once spent 24 hours in complete darkness inside St Michael’s cave where I slept on the floor surrounded by rats and other rodents. I still remember the amount of mosquito bites I ended up with. I’ve also walked to Malaga alongside Mr Alfred Medina and it took us over 37 hours to get there. Lastly, George Martinez once joined me on my 9 hour and 20 minutes journey from Ceuta to Gibraltar on a paddle boat.”

What projects have you fought for throughout your life and what have you achieved from them?

“I have done many things in order to help the Gibraltarian community. I fought for a pedestrian crossing from Laguna estate to Glacis estate to be built in order to create more security for our tenants. This was thankfully achieved when they built the crossing bridge on Winston Churchill Avenue. Within Laguna estate I have been able to accomplish the construction of The Adventure Playground and the Nissan Hut for youth discos. Alongside Pricilla and Henry Sacramento I was also able to raise enough money through charity events to build a special needs room and a pets corner at St. Martins School. Another big project was the Dr Giraldi Home, which was much needed as there wasn’t anywhere for those disabled to be taken care of once their parents passed away.”

Now that you are retired, how has this changed your involvement with the VOGG and generally in society?

“I wouldn’t say that my retirement has changed much. To be honest, I would say that I am even more involved now than I was before. When I wasn’t retired I would work for seven hours a day and then give it a rest, but now I spend the whole day involved in my charity work and my other daily responsibilities. Saying that, having to work never restricted me from continuing working within charity groups.” BMAG 34

As Chairman of Help Us Help Them, Laguna Estate Tenants Association Social Club and a member of the Voice of Gibraltar Group, Julio Pons is well known for concerning himself with the interests of Gibraltarians. Julio has taken part in many charity events and projects that have greatly benefitted Gibraltar throughout the years. As National Day approaches, Julio discusses why this day is so special to him and why he thanks General Franco for creating our Gibraltarian identity.

You are also known for having very strong political views, how has this impacted your life?

“Well I started in the GSLP committee with Joe Bossano. I always looked for the wellbeing of the workers of Gibraltar, but once the politics commenced it was very different to what I thought it would be. I realised that politics was white one day and would change to black and white the next. I thought that if something was wrong, it would still be wrong the next day, but that wasn’t how it worked. That was when I realised that politics wasn’t right for me. However I do still work very closely with the Chief Ministers of Gibraltar. I don’t care what party they are from, that doesn’t interest me. I just look after the interests of the people of Gibraltar and do what I can to help.”

You were in the local press for pulling down the European flag at the frontier, what motivated you to do this?

“I did it because we don’t seem to advance in anyway in our relationship with Spain. We had been fighting for something to be done about the boarder queues for a long time, and when the EU inspectors finally turn up to sort things out, there were no queues to be seen and everything was running perfectly. That really annoyed me because it was a lie. When I saw the European flag up by the frontier I thought, why do we want that up there when we’re not being respected as Europeans ourselves?”

How do you view the immediate future for Gibraltar?

“I think it’s going to be very good. I think the situation at the frontier is going to get better with time. We have been through all this before when the frontier was closed. I say this many times and people think I’m crazy, but I actually thank Franco for closing the frontier, because that was the moment when Gibraltar realised what it could do on its own and we got a better sense of who we were. I think that is where Gibraltar got its strong sense of unity and from that we became a really strong community.”

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

“I really love working with all the different charities and associations I am involved in, that is my escape.”

How do you intend to spend National Day this year?

“National Day for me is on the same level as the Christmas holidays. It’s a very big day for me. Like I said, we have worked so hard and been through so much as a community, and on National Day all that seems to shine through. It’s a great feeling when I see the streets full of so many youngsters celebrating, and it’s reassuring that our future will be secure in their hands. I will spend the day as I do every year, with all my family and all the people I care about the most.”

In the press there have been recent talks stating that the balloons should not be released on National Day this year due to environmental issues, what are your thoughts on this?

“To tell you the truth I completely respect the point about it not being good for the environment, but I still think there will be balloons released this year. It has been happening for so many years that I don’t think they will stop it from happening.” BMAG 35

Is there anything you have always wanted to do but never got round to doing it?

“No, nothing. Everything I have wanted to do I have made it a point to do it.”

What do you value most in life?

“My family and all the work I do to help the Gibraltarian Community, but my family always comes first.”

What do you like most about Gibraltar, and what things would you change?

“That’s a very good question. I wouldn’t change much as I am very happy with things as they are and I love everything about Gibraltar. One thing that would make a great difference would be if the political parties could make an effort to be more united. I believe this is the one major divide that Gibraltar has within its society, and it’s all because of politics. The political parties should make an effort to join forces to look towards the interests of the people of Gibraltar, instead of being so preoccupied in trying to make the other party look bad.”

What do you think makes Gibraltar special?

“I would say the thing that makes Gibraltar special in my eyes is how the community is united as one. When it comes down to the moment of truth, even everyone’s different political views don’t change things.”

Have you ever considered leaving Gibraltar to live somewhere else?

“I did move to England in 1970 after the frontier in Gibraltar had closed down. I was born there so we decided to give it a try. We only lasted a year and a half before deciding to come back. It just wasn’t the place for me.”

What do you do on a typical day?

“I spend a lot of my day calling people up about charity work and I also spend most afternoons feeding and looking after the animals at St. Martins School.”

Thinking back at your life, what is the event you are most proud of?

“I am very proud of everything I have done and achieved throughout my life. I would have to say that the event that probably tops it all off was when I requested and fought for a crossing bridge to be constructed at Winston Churchill Avenue. This all happened when I first started out and it was my first major achievement. All zebra crossings in Laguna Estate and surrounding areas were also placed at the same time the bridge from Laguna to Glacis Estate was constructed. All I was looking out for was the safety of our tenants and this really improved that.”

BMAG 36

You have had a very fulfilling life, is there anything you would do differently if you had another opportunity?

“I would take the European flag down from its post on the frontier again. Things have improved slightly but not enough.”

Now that we are approaching National Day, what message would you like to give the people of Gibraltar?

“I would like to stress the importance of unity within our community. I would encourage everyone to be united not only on this special day, but throughout the whole year as well.”

SVA’s

Menswear A/W’14

Style Guide

Attention Gentlemen! Welcome to your monthly style bulletin, brought to you by SVA. Get stylish and make the right statements with SVA’s Menswear Style Guide for A/W’14. Let SVA inspire you to dress the part and look sharp for this coming season.

By Sean Vincent Acris Keep ahead of the game and make sure you are set for business by looking smart and sophisticated in the right gear! Whether you are looking to impress the ladies or get your next promotion at work explore the possibilities, from contemporary tailoring to accessories to sharpen up your look for a cool season in town.

Firstly, 4 trends to follow: Allow your new style guru to introduce you to four trends to

get you started and that will keep your wardrobe alive and kicking!

1. Winter Frames

2. Oversized Overcoat

Get serious and get your clients and work colleagues attention with a serious pair of frames that show you mean business! Select a pair that suits your shape face and take inspiration from modern designer frames that make a bold statement with a variety of shapes and textured/ thicker frames.

Every guy needs this essential item! Whether throwing it over the shoulders casually or wrapping it over your suit, this is the right statement piece for you to swank-up your wardrobe and give it some attitude.

BMAG 42

3. Block Colour

4. Fashion Feet!

The best way to pull this trend off is by sporting one fashion item such as a chunky piece knitwear against neutral coloured trousers creating a punchy statement. The trick to making an impact with colour is not to overload the eye with too much of it but instead by choosing one bold colour to take centre stage in your outfit choice.

Step into some serious style and take the town by storm with a pair of awesome designer pumps or brogues to complete your outfit. Don’t get caught out wearing the wrong shoes – its criminal!

A/W’14 Tailoring… The Gentlemen’s Suit Try not to stand out from the crowd when choosing a suit. Get the basic shell right and then jazz it up with the right accessories. SVA recommends a classic cut, with a decent size lapel of at least 2.5 inches. Donegal tweed in a cool navy blue or stone grey would be ideal in terms of versatility! Navy and grey is a fantastic base to take different colours; have fun pairing it up with a shirt in a blackberry, cobalt blue, or rust to be on trend. Match accordingly with a pocket square and tie in a contrast pattern. If you can find a three piece version of your suit, include the waist coat to get more wear out of it and dress it up or down. Lastly don’t compromise on the quality! Invest a little more if need be to ensure you own a timeless suit that can stand the test of time.

FOUR Essential accessories (watch/ aftershave/ leather gloves/ man-bag/)

Autumn is finally creeping up on us and soon we will be able to say goodbye to the humidity and warm temperature as we welcome in cool breezes and colour leafs. In the meantime, you may already be wondering and daydreaming about how to spruce up the house for the incoming season. Take a peek at our forecast for the best room colours that let off the best moods for the upcoming season. Autumn colour trends are here, get inspired!

1. Deep Charcoal

Say goodbye to black and say hello to a deep, rich charcoal. It mixes well with lighter hues and it’s never as harsh as black but you’ll still get that classic, timeless look.

2. Cool Seafoam

It’s not quite minty green and it’s definitely not aqua, instead it’s a unique balance of the two with a cool temperature and a refreshing spirit. It mixes well with masculine and feminine accents and would look great in a corner of the house.

4. Rich Blood Orange

A healthy balance between bold reds and summery orange, a blood orange shade has an autumn essence that’s light enough to layer with neutrals and stylish enough to make a statement. And we love this aqua-inspired bedroom accented by the rich, blood orange accessories. BMAG 44

5. Silky Fuchsia

This silky, smooth and sexy shade is the perfect way to douse your dining room before the holiday season begins at the end of the year. It’s a great way to add a touch of femininity while still being fashion-forward and on season.

3. Golden Yellows

A more glowing version of a mustardy yellow, this shade is the perfect accent to make your home feel the harvest-style of autumn. From throw pillows to frames, this colour makes any corner pop.

6. Pale Skin-Tone

A very light shade of beige can brighten and open any room of the house. Whether it’s in a reading nook, the home office or in your wardrobe, this autumn needs some pale skintone foundation to make the rest of the colours stand out.

9. Subtle Lilac

Purples have a sophisticated flair and easy spirit. This light shade is the perfect way to create a foundation for a bedroom or kitchen and then highlight with a silky fuchsia.

7. Toffee Nut

This shade of brown is definitely needed this autumn. It isn’t sharp and has a feminine touch that will mix well with colours already used and sprinkled around the house.

8. Dusty Turquoise

Another light tone that makes for the perfect foundation or compliment to bolder tones, in home or fashion. A dusty turquoise is incredibly versatile and never steers you wrong. Just check out those chairs!

10. Ink Blue

A deep and sultry blue is calling us. Whether you’re dressing your furniture in this beautiful tone or accenting the living room and jazzing it up for the new season, you cannot go wrong with this classy, feel-good colour.

From stunning, tufted piece to a magical DIY headboard project that turns out just right, a bedroom needs this addition to transform and finish the styling. Whether you love eclectic vibes or Victorian flair, we’ve compile 10 of the most beautiful and feminine headboards around. Go shopping or get to work on some tutorials and create a headboard for your bedroom that are girlish and charming. Take a peek!

Eclectic & Original

With a bit of a Victorian foundation and a pop of mustard colours, this eclectic headboard make this rather simple room become something much more interesting and magical.

Classic & Fresh

A headboard doesn’t have to necessarily be a headboard. Do a bit of creative thinking and use a beautiful tapestry as your newest inspired piece. We love the girlish charm that this black and white choice adds but also a bit of edge as well.

Trendy & Hip

This wood frame was dipped in a beautiful colour and creates an artistic transformation for the room. The hipster appeal of this bedroom is trendy and on point but also styled in feminine flare.

Sharp & Modern

For a classic, contemporary look go with a headboard with a smooth finish. This crisp, white piece lines in a black polka dot would mesh well within any girlish room.

Funky & Young

Sometimes it’s all about the right kind of fabric. We are swooning over this red and white beauty. Not only is the shape unique but also the wild patterns are super playful.

Mixed & Bright

A combination of moulding and fabric makes this fun headboard a surprising and refreshing look. We love the sunny yellow prints and the preppy appeal of the foundation. BMAG 46

Easy & Clean

Who loves wall decals? If you don’t have the money to spare to try your hand at a DIY project or brand new headboard, then why not create the illusion instead? You can still find dainty pieces without the dip in your wallet.

Large & Subtle

We love how this headboard is not only large and stylish but still subtle and delicate in colour. Sure, it takes up a lot of space and makes a scene, but it’s also quite smooth and dainty enough to touch.

Charming & Fun

This headboard is really just a folding screen. It adds a simple charm and fun, refreshing feel to you cottage-esque bedroom.

Flowing & Whimsy

And other times you need to put your creativity to work and pick a beautiful fabric to show off. This easy headboard idea makes for a romantic and relaxing air.

VIRGO

24AUG - 22SEP

When certain situations become mechanical and giving a very good impression of controlling us as opposed to the other way around, we grow to accept this. ‘It’s always been this way, so what chance do I have of ever changing it?’ is one of numerous questions we ask ourselves. This month, you’re being strongly encouraged to look at something you have long wanted to change but have felt powerless to change. Let the cosmos give you a taste of how much power you do actually possess to bring about the change you yearn for and then, if you use that power wisely, you will amaze yourself at what you’re capable of.

SAGITTARIUS

22NOV - 21DEC

Imagine you were alone in an overloaded boat that, through being overloaded, was at risk of sinking. You could understandably cling to every item in the belief it was important or not to be parted with by throwing it overboard. How would that help you, though? Sooner or later, you would recognise the need to discard anything that could be discarded if you’re to put yourself in a more advantageous position. The same applies to an area of your world this month. You can continue to be weighed down by that which you believe you ought to be clinging to or release yourself from it. Do the latter and you’ll soon see how free you become from a tiresome scenario.

Imagine you are stranded on a deserted island with nothing but hundreds of crates of diced pineapple. Imagine, as well, that you detest pineapple. Ok, here we have you in a difficult position but one that you are actually protected within, to a large extent. Your ability to survive is unquestionable but it would require you to accept a need to make do with something you wouldn’t normally choose to accept. This month sees you doing something similar. You’re superbly placed to go beyond the realms of attaining something, but to do it, you’re going to have to accept something difficult to swallow. Make a necessary adjustment and you will succeed.

What do promises and piecrusts have in common? Both were made to be broken. Now, before you foresee a month of letdowns or deceit, please understand the sky states that a fresh start in a certain area is what you need and this will involve a new set of rules or obligations introduced. It will also require you or someone close to commit in ways that might need more commitment made to what’s being committed to! It’s true something cannot continue as it is. Preparedness exists on your or someone else’s part to do what’s needed to instigate necessary change. As long as honesty plays an integral part in what’s being committed to, then all will be fine.

How willing are you to improvise? How aware are you of resources you do have available that you feel or fear might be lacking or absent? Such are questions the cosmos is posing to you now and you’re likely to find yourself able to achieve much more than you believe simply by applying imagination to a situation where you don’t believe you have enough material supply or sway within. Don’t let a perceived lack of something stop you from trying. You can make something special happen if you’re willing to seize an alternative option. You have your own reasons to feel happy and optimistic. Very soon, you’ll have even more. Let developments this month confirm this.

Let’s talk about the word ‘acceptance’. Let’s also discuss the word ‘compromise’. The two words are curiously linked. Before we can reach a compromise, we have to be willing to do so. That’s where acceptance comes in. This month, there is something you need to accept. There is an issue you will have to come to terms with but it doesn’t end there. If you can accept a certain situation, then you’ll find yourself superbly placed to reach a compromise surrounding it. There is a way forward. There is a way you can benefit from accepting what might not be immediately acceptable. Be willing to move a situation forward and that’s what you’ll achieve.

‘It ain’t what you do, it’s the way that you do it.’ So went the lyrics to the classic 1930s jazz tune. This month presents you with a muchneeded opportunity to reassess something you do and why you do it the way you do it. It is becoming clear that something needs to shift and a new way in a certain area needs to be at least tried. You can choose to play it safe and keep doing what you’re doing but would you be happy with achieving the same old result? Of course not. That’s why you’re being encouraged to adopt a different approach in some way. This will involve summoning a little bit more belief in your abilities but promises to bring a delightful result.

21JUN - 22JUL

Human beings excel at the act of selfprotection. We don’t need much in the way of a reason sometimes to put in place strategies we believe will ensure we don’t subject ourselves willingly or foolishly to vulnerability or pain. Even the Crab, your own astrological sign, works in a similar way through making use of its hard exterior when it feels threatened. September doesn’t bring a need for you to feel threatened or at risk of being hurt but it does present a need for you to be slightly cautious. A sensitive matter needs careful handing. Don’t succumb to a belief that you must go to great lengths to protect yourself. A fear can be channelled constructively and positively.

23OCT - 21NOV

If ever there was a month to adopt a ‘right here, right now’ attitude, it’s this one. ‘Right here, right now’ is all that matters. We can debate until cows come home the need to constantly look toward and prepare for the future, but until we pass what’s happening in the present, the future a present yet to be dealt with. Avoid a tendency to take a certain matter too seriously this month. It smacks of seriousness and does a good job of demanding attention. Yet, it is something you have little or no control over. That’s why you need to train your brain to focus on the present at any given time. If you can do that, then you’ll soon see what magic exists within it.

20JAN - 18FEB

When playing ‘musical chairs’, participant numbers dwindle and so does the number of chairs. A particular cycle repeats until there is only one person left, being the winner. This month could see you going round in circles regarding a particular issue but the game is one being overseen by the cosmos. It dictates when something stops and when something gets removed. What it’s doing is removing obstacles on your behalf and it secretly wants you to be the winner. Play the game for a little while longer. Let options be removed one by one until you find yourself in a strong and advantageous position. As this month unfolds, that’s precisely what you will discover.

When those around us fail to see how important something is to us and understand our reasons for taking a certain matter so seriously, they often tell us to ‘lighten up’ or relax. The same often gets said to them, too. For some time, a serious matter has been hanging over your head and no matter how much you’ve tried to peer through it for inspiration, all you’ve seen is darkness and despair. This month, the matter in question might not become less serious but its seriousness will be replaced by restored belief in fairness finally playing a part in what you’ve believed to be unfair so far.

When is enough, enough? When is it appropriate to stop? Artists learn to deal with this conundrum. As tempted as they might be to continue adding a dab of paint or a few more notes to their masterpieces, they learn at some point when it is necessary to accept that something is finished. With that in mind, where do you believe more effort is required in an area you have invested enough within? More to the point, why do you believe more is actually needed? September brings a chance for you to assess where you really are with a particular situation and with that will come realisation surrounding the futility of further investment of time and effort toward it.
