LETTER BRYAN & BIANCA ZAMMIT

And so, here we are bang in the heart of summer. Is it just us, or does everything seems to be moving really fast? We know wisdom tells us that as you get older, time seems to speed up, you blink and the year has gone by. As soon as September rolls in, we start weeding through our wardrobes and begin to organise our autumn/winter fashion. And talking about fashion, here at B Magazine we have had a wonderful year of fashion and beauty in every sense of the word, so far. We’ve been busy publishing magazines and creating our annual events. The 12th edition of Miss Glamour 2014 took place just a few weeks ago on Friday 11th July. The stunning Denille Patterson was crowned Miss Glamour 2014. Closely following was 1st Princess, Louise Bonavia and Yuly Gaiviso was chosen 2nd Princess. For the full report turn to pages 8-19 and Gib Social Scene pages 60-61 for behind the scenes shots. This year’s beauty pageant saw seven young ladies competing for the title. We would like to congratulate the seven contestants for their wonderful performance and congratulate the winners on their success. Well Done! This year’s show was in aid of GBC Open Day 2014. We are already making arrangements and preparing for 27th February 2015 for the 10th anniversary of Dream Girl of the Year, for girls between the ages of 10-14. So, any girls wishing and interested in continuing the legacy and have an experience of a lifetime, please do not hesitate to drop us a line via Facebook for further information. We promise, that next year is going to be another amazing year!

August 2014

Onto the August 2014 issue of B Magazine, we all know celebrities maintain their bodies with a lot of help from people like personal trainers, private chefs, professional aestheticians, and maybe even a plastic surgeon or two. But that doesn’t necessarily mean they won’t still practice more attainable habits to preserve their killer physiques. In the interest of seeing what some of the world’s most beautiful women do to keep fit - and maybe even get in shape ourselves - we’ve revealed some of their deepest, darkest diet and exercise secrets. So, if you want abs like Jessica Alba or thighs like Rihanna turn to pages 26-28 for ‘Celebrity Body Secrets’. Ever since Queen Victoria decided to marry Prince Albert in a lacy, white wedding gown in 1840, Western brides have traditionally opted to wear the same colour for their nuptials. But historically, dresses spanned the rainbow and were usually chosen because they were the finest piece of clothing that a woman typically owned. In Eastern cultures, colours like red, gold, and fuchsia symbolised good luck, while white was worn for funerals, so brides chose those vivid hues to ensure a prosperous union. Now it’s taken for granted that one will wear something in the ivory, ecru, or Champagne family down the aisle - but not every woman dreams of showing up on her big day dressed that way, especially if it’s her second time around. So, if you think it’s all about the big white meringue dress, think again. Brides are increasingly opting for coloured gowns, shorter styles and even ditching the dress entirely! So if you’re looking for something a little different on your Big Day, turn to page 4445 and get inspired by some of these brides, ‘Our Favourite Alternative Wedding Dresses’. On the topic of wedding dresses, the 9th Wedding Dress Competition 2014 will be taking place this year on Friday 15th August at the Alameda Open Air Theatre. There will be some great performances by Corinne Cooper, Danza Academy, various fashion shows and not forgetting the beautiful brides. Tickets are priced £15 and are already on sale from Chique Boutique, 6 Ocean Village Promenade. Make sure to buy your tickets early to avoid disappointment! On a final note we would like to remind our readers that at Mamma Mia there is an al fresco terrace, which has a great view of the rock and the cable car and at Paparazzi, children under 10 years old eat for free from the hours of 12 noon to 5pm. Both menus can be found within the magazine, Enjoy the magazine, enjoy your summer season and enjoy life Until the next issue… B&B

With metallics all the buzz heading into autumn, why not start adding them to your wardrobe with the richest and boldest hue? Gold is not only a classic, but it’ll add a little oomph to any light-toned or darktoned outfit. After weeks of rehearsals, hours of hair and makeup and an overload of nerves, seven gorgeous contestants prepared to take the stage on the evening of Friday 11th July to compete for the title of Miss Glamour 2014. Glamour Creations once again managed to successfully fill up the Alameda Open Air Theatre to capacity for the highly anticipated event. Sat among the contestants’ family and friends were last year’s winners Miss Glamour 2013 Tessa Britto, 1st Princess Leila Asquez and 2nd Princess Geralynn Victory, who knew too well how the contestants backstage were feeling. Opening the show before this year’s contestants stepped on stage was Andy Coumbe. Andy introduced the five judges for the night: Renowned photographer Joanna Kustra, professional model and Miss Glamour 2004 Samantha Enriles, personal fitness trainer and nutritional therapist Elka Hanglin, fashion designer Paul Perez and fashion stylist and consultant at Ulookfierce.com Monique Perera, would evaluate the girls and award them the prizes at the end of the night. The seven contestants; Yuly Gaivizo, Shaniece Casciaro, Krystel Gonzalez, Cerys Kennedy, Francesca Alker, Louise Bonavia and Denille Patterson strutted on stage wearing black crop tops, high waisted sequined silver leggings and black high heels to the song ‘Papi’ by Jennifer Lopez. If the girls were nervous it did not shine through their poised exteriors. The young ladies introduced themselves to the judges in this part of the show one by one, announcing their name, age and sponsor. The rehearsals had paid off, as the girls appeared to be confident and executed the first choreography perfectly, giving the audience a great insight to what was expected throughout the rest of the night. Keeping the audience entertained whilst the contestants changed backstage for the next part of the show was Urban Dance, who performed four fast-paced and energetic dance pieces throughout the night. To add onto the entertainment for the night, local teenage singer Aouatif Ghabroui, who despite only having performed on stage twice before, expertly performed Beyonce’s ‘Pretty Hurts’ and ‘Ave Maria’ and Adele’s ‘One and Only’. The contestants returned to the stage to begin the bikini sector of the show, wearing red two-piece swimsuits that had been donated to them by Glamour Creations. The girls had also added a black tasselled sarong to their wardrobe for this part of the show, which they untied from their waists as they walked down the stage. The last time the audience got to see the contestants in the first half of the show was during the Miss Vogue Competition. In this part of the show the girls got to wear their own choice of clothing to reflect their style and personality through their outfit. The audience got to see many different looks on the stage; nevertheless all the girls looked stunning and impressed the audience and judges in their unique style.

Photos by Ulookfierce.com Report by Maxine Sene

You could feel the tension and excitement rise in the audience as they seated again for the beginning of the second half of the show. The end of the night was getting near and the judges had a very hard job, as they would have only been able to see the contestants twice before they had to announce the winners. The second half began with the girls taking the stage as part of the Miss Catwalk Competition in bright bodycon dresses and black high heels. The girls rushed back stage to get their hair done by Fresh Image Pampering and their makeup retouched by Debbie Goodman before they took the stage one last time before Miss Glamour 2014 is crowned. In the Miss Elegant Competition the contestants presented themselves in front of the judges wearing their formal gowns. The judges had a tough deliberation ahead of them as all the girls showed confidence, elegance and poise. The moment everyone had been waiting for had arrived when last year’s winners were called up on stage to crown the new winners. Before this there were several other prizes that the judges needed to award the contestants based on their performance and this was done with the help of founder, experienced model, and organiser Bianca Zammit the Producer/ Director of Glamour Creations, and handed by 1st Princess to Dream Girl of the Year 2014 Alanna Bonavia. BMAG 11

Before the top prizes were handed out Bianca called Annie Jackson and Michelle Bonavia on stage to thank them for their involvement throughout the organisation of the show and their help in training the contestants during the rehearsals leading up to the show. The prizes kicked off with the Miss Friendship award that was won by Francesca Alker who also received the Miss Elegant prize. Krystel Gonzalez was then awarded the Miss Best Effort and Miss Catwalk prizes. Yuly Gavizo was awarded Miss Cover Girl and was also crowned 2nd Princess by Geralynn Victory. Louise Bonavia received the Miss People’s Choice and Miss Bikini awards and was also crowned 1st Princess by Leila Asquez. Lastly, Denille Patterson who was awarded Miss Vogue was also crowned Miss Glamour 2014 by last year’s winner Tessa Britto. Her years’ reign sees her working closely with Glamour Creations and B Magazine for the next 12 months. The three girls looked absolutely amazing and extremely happy as they took their first walk down the stage as winners with trophies in hand and tiaras on their heads. They then joined their fellow contestants and Bianca to take a few last group photos to remember the night and their experiences leading up to show. In a fantastic conclusion to the beauty pageant, which every year brings more glamour and glitz, with amazing choreography by Bianca Zammit, who continues to deliver outstanding shows, the contestants presented her with a gift as a token of appreciation for all her time and effort. Throughout the show there were many helping hands; their contributions were that to enable the show to become the marvel that it was. Glamour Creations wish to give thanks to Andy Coumbe, Annie Jackson, Aouatif Ghabraoui, Bianca Garcia, Cora Ramirez, Liz Field, Michelle Bonavia, Monique Perera, Stacey Britto and Yalta Pons. Makeup artist Debbie Goodman and hair stylist Natalie Blyth from Fresh Image Pampering, whose time and effort was clearly visible with fantastic results, not forgetting the front and backstage crew. The Victoria Stadium for the rehearsal space, the official photographer on the night Stephen Perera from Ulookfierce. com, Aleksandra Koza and Layla Manasco for the backstage photography and last but not least Joanna Kustra for her time and amazing photos taken of the Miss Glamour 2014 contestants, ‘1920’s Glitz & Glam’ published in B Magazine Issue 68 - June 2014. With a very special thank you to the sponsors, whose financial contribution have made Miss Glamour 2014 possible: B Magazine, Beta Service, Blue Spirit Jewellery, Bonmilk, Carlos Electronics, Essardas Group, Mamma Mia Pizzeria & Pasta House, Paparazzi Café / Restaurant, The Jewel Box and Women’Secret. And also those companies who have helped in anyway in making Miss Glamour possible: BIA, Chique Boutique, Calpe Pharmacy, Finesse, Marble Arc, Mill Pharmacy, Music Corner, Pashmina, Pizza Hut, S.M. Seruya Ltd, Short Cut, SRS, The Alameda Open Air Theatre, The Flower Shop, The Silver Shop, Trafalgar Pharmacy and Urban Dance. BMAG 12

On a more personal note, Glamour Creations would like to congratulate the seven contestants for their wonderful performance and congratulate the winners on their success. Well Done!

Celebrity Body Secrets Want abs like Jessica Alba or thighs like Rihanna?

The stars reveal their deepest, darkest diet and exercise secrets.

Blake Lively

Blake Lively is famed for her elongated, toned limbs and hot body. How does she keep it that way? “I am terrible, I don’t do any exercise,” she confessed. “I’m going to have to learn the hard way. I love food too much, and my family is from the South, so the food I like is not necessarily the best for you. There are days when I will be like, ‘Oh my goodness, I am not happy with the way I look because I cannot fit into any of my clothes’. So I eat quinoa that week, and then I feel good.”

Kelly Brook

Curvy Kelly Brook is the envy of girls the world over. How does she hone her super shape? “I love cranking the music up and hulahooping for about ten minutes,” she told one British tabloid. She also hits the gym with a personal trainer three times a week and apparently follows a macrobiotic diet, too. BMAG 26

Charlize Theron

We’re pretty sure South African screen goddess Charlize Theron has good genes to thank for her phenomenal figure, but we’re relieved to hear she doesn’t rely on genetics alone. “I work out like everyone else, I mix up hiking, spinning, Yoga – the variety helps me stay active,” she told one magazine.

Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian is famous for her killer curves, but how does she maintain them? Eating properly, not depriving herself and filling up on protein at every meal. “Before, all I’d have for breakfast was a Grande Soy Chai Latte,” she said. Now, the reality star chows down on oats, eggs, turkey or fruit to start the day, instead.

Bar Rafaeli

Jessica Biel

Israeli model Bar Refaeli insists that resistance training and the odd treat is the secret behind her killer body. “I like eating healthily but if I’m craving I’ll have it, just not every day,” she revealed. “My main workout is TRX (working with your own body weight) which really tones the body. I can’t do the Yoga stuff, it bores me.”

Justin Timberlake’s wife is a big fan of strength-building, holistic routines. “I practise Yoga on a regular basis and work with Jason Walsh my amazing trainer – he makes me do more one legged squats than you could ever imagine,” she said.

Dita Von Teese

Halle Berry

Dita Von Teese has a body to die for – a carefully honed, ivory vessel she puts down to Pilates and training her body to eat healthy foods. “If you stop eating sugar, your body doesn’t want sugar anymore. I haven’t had a fizzy drink in 15 years!” she revealed. “I drink green smoothies with spinach, kale, and dark leafy greens mixed with fruit. Then something salady for lunch and then I can eat what I want at night. Ever since I stopped eating a big breakfast of eggs, toast and cereal, I feel so much better.”

Halle Berry had to change her entire outlook on eating and exercise because of a medical condition… Not that that’s hampered her achieving her legendary toned physique. Speaking to a British tabloid, Halle said: “Because I’m diabetic, I totally changed my diet and workout regime. I don’t eat fried foods or refined sugar, only natural sugar in fruit and vegetables. And I don’t eat carbs a lot. I’m not obsessive, like I have to have the best butt or the best abs, but I like feeling strong and healthy.”

Miranda Kerr

What we wouldn’t do to have legs like Miranda Kerr! The Victoria’s Secret model chalks her fab figure down to “a regular Yoga routine I practice” and personal training. She also eats lots of vegetables. “I love spinach, avocado, lots of greens and broccoli.”

Gwen Stefani

“I work out five days a week, I can’t imagine not doing it,” Gwen Stefani told one British magazine of her slim body secrets. “I’d like to have no rules and eat what I want, but I’ve learned over the years that I’m so disappointed when I can’t wear the clothes I want to wear.”

Beyoncé

Just a few weeks after giving birth to baby Blue Ivy, Beyoncé unveiled her slamming hot body. “I lost most of my weight from breastfeeding and I encourage women to do it; it’s just so good for the baby and good for yourself. I counted calories. I worked out maybe three to four times a week. I did a lot walking in the beginning and now I’m running. But I had to work my way up. I couldn’t just go right from being pregnant to running.”

Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez’s flawless figure might look like it comes naturally to her, but in actual fact the star has to work hard to maintain her toned physique. “I work out because I have to”. The star is also a devotee of the Dukan diet and the Tracy Anderson dance fitness method.

Cheryl Cole

Slender popster Cheryl Cole steers away from fads and crash dieting to keep her figure taut. “I work out and try to make healthy choices. I try to avoid diets like the plague. That can get you into a vicious circle. I did when I was younger,” she said during an interview.

Jessica Alba

Candice Swanepoel

Victoria’s Secret model Candice Swanepoel puts her hot body down to plain old hard work and a balanced diet. “I love a good breakfast. I love croissants, eggs and bacon. I eat a lot of vegetables; I like omelettes and raisins too. I love waking up; I box; I do a lot of resistance... Three or four times a week,” she told one British magazine.

Rihanna

Rihanna is one of the hottest women in the world right now and is about as toned and defined a celeb as they come. But, she says, her good looks come at a heavy cost. Speaking to a magazine, she said: “Cardio is the key. I have a personal trainer who travels with me if we have a big event coming up. I work out every day but I need a trainer to motivate me.”

Jessica Alba has abs to die for thanks to the strict diet and exercise routine she follows. “When I eat breakfast, I’ll have an egg-white omelette and fruit, or cottage cheese and a peach. For lunch, I’ll have a salad. Dinner is usually vegetables and chicken or fish. During the day I’ll have some dried fruit, or I’ll have a chocolate or strawberry frozen yogurt. I don’t really eat desserts or bread. I try to work out every day for 45 minutes to an hour. I start out on the treadmills or elliptical machine for 10 to 15 minutes to get my heart rate up to 180 beats per minute. Then I do 50 lunges and crunches. Next I get back on the machine for another 10 minutes. Then I work on shoulders, biceps and triceps. I do that nonstop for four sets.” Phew! Sounds like a lot of hard work to us!

Myleene Klass

Myleene Klass boasts some seriously enviable curves, but they weren’t always so toned. Her secret? “I lost weight by eating sensibly and sitting down for proper meals at home,” she revealed. “I still ate the same foods as I always had, but not the quantity. I didn’t deny myself anything – if you do that you want twice as much of it – and I don’t do faddy diets.” BMAG 27

Kristen Stewart

Kristen Stewart was a mere slip of a girl before she joined the cast of Snow White And The Huntsman as the eponymous heroine. Now, she’s ripped. “I’ve never worked out before. Now I’m only allowed to eat stuff out of a box. It works. Also I feel more energised and stronger.”

Jennifer Aniston

Jennifer Aniston’s exercise routine? As intense as her abs. “I work out almost every day, at least five or six days a week. I do 40 minutes of cardio: spinning, running, the elliptical, or a combination of all three. Then I do Pilates one day a week, and I do Yoga in addition to that, three days a week. I try to mix it up. I take 8lb [3.6kg] weights with me whenever I’m staying in a hotel. It’s always good to do arm exercises when you’re watching television or talking on the phone. I also love to stretch before I go to bed, and usually throw in a couple of sit-ups.” BMAG 28

Katy Perry

How does Katy Perry manage to pour her heavenly figure into all those sugary latex stage costumes? A strict rope jumping routine and a meal plan, we’ll think you’ll find. With one day off for indulgence, of course. Her treat of choice? “On Sundays I get to have a cheat day where I go buck wild and eat In-N-Out Burger.”

Kelly Rowland

Kelly Rowland of ridiculously toned arms fame confesses that she doesn’t diet, but she does follow the 80/20 rule. “Most of what I eat is healthy fruit and veg, grilled fish and meat, but 20% is whatever I want. It takes hard work to look like this – and even more work to keep looking like it!”

Cameron Diaz

Cameron Diaz is famous for her long, toned limbs – but they come at a price: weight lifting and dieting. “I’m off the fried foods. I’m very thoughtful about what I eat. If you’re gonna do heavy lifting, and you want to stay small, you have to watch what you eat. You have to give your body the right nutrients and really think about what’s best for it.”

Adriana Lima

Rosie HuntingtonWhiteley

She’s got the figure most women dream of, but, Rosie HuntingtonWhiteley admits, it doesn’t half take some work keeping it that way. “Everything starts with exercise. Then you want to look after yourself and put good food into your body. I have a really good response when I cut out carbs so that’s something I always do before a big event. Hollywood is really geared up for fitness. The gym is something I always prioritise.”

Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway’s diet tip? It’s cool for a role, but in real life? “When I’m working, I’m incredibly disciplined, because when you’re portraying someone else, your body isn’t your own,” she said during an interview. “But when I’m not working, I think less about what I eat. For example, one night I had a club sandwich and another night I had pizza. You’ve got to live!”

Another Victoria’s Secret model, another hot body and another exercise fanatic, Adriana Lima certainly makes sure she earns her figure. Before one show, she told The Daily Telegraph: “I’m doing a combination of different protein shakes, it’s called Metagenics. And also, I only eat green vegetables, everything grilled or steamed, or four ounces of any type of protein. And usually that’s what I have for lunch and dinner, and every three hours in between I have a protein shake or cereal bar.” She also works out for three hours a day, every day for three weeks before a show takes place.

By Maxine Sene

Tell us a little about yourself and your background.

“I consider myself a happy, friendly person. I am ambitious and always try my best at achieving any goals and objectives set, always willing to support others when possible.”

How did you first get involved in fitness?

“I have been involved in fitness for almost 12 years now. I have always felt passionate about fitness and started working out at an early age; I joined fitness classes locally as a pupil and began attending fitness conventions abroad. I was determined to become a fitness instructor so I enrolled for a fitness and nutrition course certification. I then began practising with family members and close friends to build up my self-confidence. My classes started becoming increasingly popular and gave me more motivation to become certified in other fitness disciplines such as: Batuka, Step, Kangoo Jumps, Gymstick, XT29 Functional Training and Zumba.”

How did you kick-start your professional career in Gibraltar?

“I was fortunate enough to meet Jessica Expostito (now Global Reebok Ambassador) in one of the fitness conventions in Barcelona. Jessica was the Batuka creator, which was a fitness craze at that time. We built up a close relationship and she has guided me through my long path in this journey. Thanks to her advice, support and inspiration I have been able to achieve many of my objectives, such as organising Gibraltar’s first Fitness Convention in 2006 where various International Fitness Presenters delivered a variety of Master Classes. To date I have also organised 5 Gibfit Fitness Conventions which have proven to be extremely popular. I believe it is very important for pupils to experience other fitness disciplines delivered by International Fitness Presenters as this provides them with a variety of experiences. I also work alongside many local schools delivering fun fitness classes as part of their Health & Fitness projects every year and with local charities as part of entertainment and warm ups prior to events.”

What do you enjoy doing on your days off? “I try my best to spend quality time with my loved ones.”

What is PILOXING?

“PILOXING is the latest fitness craze, with worldwide recognition. It was founded in L.A and it is the brainchild of Swedish dance and celebrity fitness trainer Viveca Jensen. PILOXING is a fun and challenging cardio fitness programme, blending boxing, standing pilates and basic dance moves into high-energy interval training. Also included is a 15 minutes abs and butt exercise, offering pupils a total body workout. It’s a fat burning, muscle sculpting, corecentric workout that guarantees to whip you intro shape in no time. PILOXING founder Viveca combined the sleekness from pilates, took the sexy from dance and embraced the power of boxing when she created PILOXING, a workout designed to encourage women to embrace their femininity, improve flexibility and feel empowered.” BMAG 34

Local fitness enthusiast and fitness instructor Janine Pereira talks to us about her life and work, including her ground breaking progress in being the first person to bring the latest fitness craze – POLOXING to the people of Gibraltar. Her lifetime dedication to fitness and healthy living has made her one of Europe’s most qualified fitness instructors and she is now the official PILOXING Master Trainer for Gibraltar and Spain. Janine talks to us about how this all came about and what PILOXING can do for the Gibraltarian community.

When did you first come across PILOXING?

“I came across PILOXING one day whilst searching for new fitness trends. It struck my interest, as it was totally different to any other fitness programmes. Luckily there was a workshop in Mijas, delivered by Mia B Smith, who is now a European PILXOING Senior Master Trainer. I managed to arrange the first Master Class in Gibraltar on the same weekend, which was a total blast pupils absolutely loved it! Since I introduce PILOXING to Gibraltar 2 years ago the turnout has grown incredibly.”

How did you decide to become a PILOXING trainer?

“I wanted to take my involvement in PILOXING a step further and become an Elite trainer, it was then that the PILOXING academy offered me the opportunity to become a PILOXING Master Trainer. I travelled back and forth from the UK to Prague a lot at the time where I was trained by PILOXING Head Master Trainer Cortney Gornall, Senior European Master Trainer Mia B Smith and UK PILOXING Master Trainers Collette Van Dyke and Rebecca Lear. It was hard work and nerve racking but definitely worth it. I am now an official PILOXING Master Trainer for Gibraltar and whole of Spain and I am currently travelling and delivering workshops and certifying new PILOXING instructors. I would have never imagined I would have gone this far in the fitness world and would like to thank Mia B Smith for her support and encouragement throughout this new adventure, I love her to bits. I am also very fortunate to participate in international fitness conventions abroad alongside her to present PILOXING. Our next one will be on the 16th November at Ideas convention in Malaga. Locally I am also organising a PIA workshop very soon to support local instructors in their continuous education in the PILOXING programme.”

What makes PILOXING different to every other exercise?

“PILOXING has become a global fitness phenomenon and is totally unique to other programmes out there. It’s the first to combine three different elements in a single programme. Although they seem quite different to each other, boxing, pilates and dance all share the same principle of working from the core.”

Why should someone choose PILOXING instead of zumba TRANSFORMATIONS & TESTIMONIALS: Karon Ramagge: “Before I started to train, or another dance related exercise? “PILOXING and zumba are totally different programmes. I am also a zumba instructor and I would say zumba is more of a dance fitness programme, where a specific choreography is created for each song. PILOXING is not a song-based programme and there are no breaks in between songs. PILOXING incorporates the interval-training format, where the intensity of the workout alternates. The use of weighted PILOXING gloves is also available for pupils who wish to raise the intensity of the workout and increases muscle tone. Barefoot training is also an option in PILOXING offering many benefits, such as improved blood circulation, improving posture, balance and body alignment. PILOXING is a fat burning and muscle toning workout, rather than a dance fitness programme.”

What are the key benefits of PILOXING?

“PILOXING’s unique benefits include: Improved cardiovascular fitness through a core-focused interval workout. Increased muscle tone and sculpting without bulking, leading to firmer arms, thighs and belly. Fat burning through a fun fusion activity, we burn calories from 400-900 per session. Improved balance, posture and body alignment.”

Aside from PILOXING, how else do you maintain a healthy lifestyle?

I was diagnosed with one of my lungs having suffered some type of shrinkage/damage due to a massive life threatening infection as a result of my appendix bursting when I was 16 years of age. This resulted in hospitalisation for over 2 months.

Years later I found myself getting ill all the time: Shortness of breath, having to apply heat on my chest, in bed weekdays and weekends plus taking medication every day. Life was work and bed, which made me feel like the life was being sucked out of me, feeling trapped in this cycle. After seeking medical advice, doctors used to tell me that they could not do nothing because they did not know the extent of the damage and that I would have to wait to see how this would develop as the years go by. Unhappy about what the doctors had told me, I decided to take it a step further and started researching on how I could improve my shortness of breath. Exercising was one of the remedies for this so I started to look for training classes around Gibraltar. It has been 2 years now since I started working out. I decided to commence PILOXING classes when it was first introduced in Gibraltar. I started attending 2 times a week, eating healthy and doing extra activities to help me fight through the rough patch of getting tired and feeling short of breath.

“Fitness is only one part of a healthy lifestyle. For overall health and happiness, I think a well-balanced diet and having a positive attitude will help you to achieve a better quality of life.”

PILOXING Master Trainer Janine Pereira has been the person who has helped me to reach closer to the goals that I wanted to achieve, to never give up and has always been there pushing me to the limit to get the best results out of fitness.

What should a newcomer expect from PILOXING?

I started out weighing 216lb (98kg) and 2 years later I weigh 176lb (80kg) resulting in a massive drop of 40lb. Also, I was recently certified as a PILOXING Instructor after a lot of encouragement from Janine. As for my breathing condition, it has improved to an extent where I no longer suffer from shortness of breath or any of the other symptoms. Doctors have told me that my lungs have expanded due to the exercising and I no longer require any medication.

“They should expect a fun, yet hard workout that gives positive results and is a great opportunity to meet new people and make friends.”

What tips or advice would you give someone who is trying to take on a healthier lifestyle? PILOXING has changed my life completely. I feel full of life and energy, “I would say you need dedication, resistance, consistency and focus to take on a healthier lifestyle. Most importantly I believe you will need to find an activity to do that you enjoy doing because that will help you stay on the right track and stick to all the other principles mentioned above.”

What sort of diet do you follow on a daily basis?

“I follow a varied and healthy diet, containing plenty of fruit vegetables and lots of water.”

What is your guilty pleasure when it comes to food?

“I must confess that I’m a chocoholic! It is definitely my guilty pleasure, I can’t stay away from it!”

Is PILOXING recommended to people from all levels of fitness?

“PILOXING is a fitness programme designed for all levels of fitness, but it’s also one of the best workouts for people to begin their fitness journey.”

How has PILOXING been received by the Gibraltarian community? “Everyone is extremely enthusiastic about this new programme. It is proving to be a huge success and pupils just can’t get enough of PILOXING.”

Why do people benefit from group-based exercises such as PILOXING more than struggling alone at the gym or following exercise DVDs at home?

“Obviously the social factor plays a very important role. It allows pupils to socialise and be motivated. By training in a group you are able to push yourself that extra bit which maybe you would not do training by yourself in the gym or at home. The PILOXING community is like a big family in which everyone is encouraged to support each other and acknowledge each other’s achievements.”

rejuvenated, stronger and toned, and I also feel that my posture has improved together with my balance. A big thank you to PILOXING and Janine Pereira for this life changing opportunity.”

Nicola Belilo: “My journey began about 2 years ago when I realised that I could not keep up with my little boy. I wasn’t happy with my health and I wasn’t happy with my lifestyle. I needed a change so I started PILOXING with my wonderful and inspirational instructor, Janine Pereira. With her energy and motivation I have fallen in love with PILOXING and have become a new person! Through it I have become disciplined in my eating habits and in the way I take care of my body. For the first time ever in my life I am happy with what I see in the mirror and I have opened up as a person. I was never one to face fears, to face challenges but now through PILOXING I face my fears and I accept new challenges, so much so that I have become a PILOXING instructor myself. It’s one of the best things I’ve ever done! I am now looking forward to all the new challenges that will come my way, in PILOXING and in my life. Thank you PILOXING for making me feel and look SLEEK, SEXY and POWERFUL!”

For more information regarding PILOXING in Gibraltar & Spain people can email Janine on janine@piloxing.com

What are the essential things someone will need to take part in a PILOXING class?

“First of all you need determination and a will to workout hard. Essentially you only need your body to carry out a PILOXING workout. As an extra option to the programme, PILOXING has incorporated the use of weighted gloves. A sense of identity and self-esteem are also enhanced through the availability of PILOXING training gear. However newcomers would be okay to wear any comfortable and only need to bring along a training mat and a bottle of water.”

When will our readers be able to join PILOXING?

“They should expect a fun, yet hard workout that gives positive results “We have just finalised the classes for the new programme that will commence in September and these will be available shortly. In the meantime I will be working on new choreographies and music for the new term and I have a number of PILOXING workshops to deliver throughout Spain during this month of August.” BMAG 35

Be it corals, reds, or something a little bolder, bright lips are having something of a moment with the A-list. So follow their lead and dare to go a shade bolder... Eva Mendes Fearne Cotton

Pinks don’t have to be Barbie bright to be bold and we’re huge fans of Fearne’s popping purplishpink pout.

Olivia Palermo

Olivia Palermo looked utterly beautiful at the Couture Week in Paris and we’d like to think it’s down to that scene-stealing hot orangey matte red lipstick nothing at all to do with being a blissfully happy newlywed!

If pinks feel too saccharine for you though, channel your bright lip experiments through a richly pigmented and utterly gorgeous coral hue, like sexpot Eva Mendes.

Lady Gaga

Sometimes a conventional coral just won’t cut it though. Enter Lady Gaga who demonstrates how to (or not, as the case may be) work the petrol-blue metallic lip. Sure to get you noticed. Green glitter eyebrows, optional.

Gwen Stefani

Before bright lips got big and lipstick had its renaissance, there was Gwen. The purveyor of all things lipstick, no one rocks the bright lip quite like this lady. Come rain or shine she’s perfect every time.

Jessica Alba

We’re always a little too timid to try a really pastel lip but proving that smokey eyes and a paler-than-pale pink lipstick are the perfect beauty bedfellows, is Jessica Alba.

Jennifer Lopez Rihanna

Rihanna’s no slouch when it comes out to trying a new trend and the gorgeous singer went for something a little bolder at the 2014 iHeartRadio Awards, with this forest green lipstick and some majorly 90s throwback hair. BMAG 36

Be it apricot or flaming orange, J.Lo knows that a masterfully crafted glassy lip is timeless. While we’re big fans of her no-holds barred approach to fashion, we’re also in utter admiration of her scant disregard for the rules, working a dramatic lip with an even more theatrical outfit.

Diane Kruger lily aldridge

How to pep up and already killer LBD? Why all you need is a fab blow-dry and a gorgeously sanguineous red lip.

But hot fuchsia coloured lipsticks need only a slick of mascara for long, fluttery lashes that won’t compete with the bright colour. Take Diane’s lead on this one.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

There’s no doubt that Rosie’s pout is among the best in the business and while you can’t get lips like those, you certainly can get the same lipstick!

Katy Perry

Putting a modern twist on a vintage look, Katy Perry updates her rockabilly fringe with a slick of hot pink lippy, rather than the customary retro red. Jessica Biel

Mrs. Justin Timberlake is a dab hand on the beauty front, as well as being a pro in the sartorial stakes, too! This popping pink with a glossy formula made her heavy black velvet dress totally springappropriate at a New York party and we love the simple mascaraed lashes, which let the bright pink lip hue do all the talking.

Sophie Ellis-Bextor

Perfect corals are almost highlighter in their bright proportions so make sure your pout is up to the job of carrying it off, like Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s perfect salmonpink smile. Scrub your lip with an exfoliator (or even your toothbrush) to make sure the lips are perfectly primed for that bold slick of colour.

Olivia Wilde

Christina Aguilera

Christian Aguilera is no stranger to an experimental makeup look or two and this neon pink lipstick hue is pure fun.

Looking like she walked straight off of the Erdem S/S 12 catwalk, Olivia Wilde’s glossy pout with easybreezy definition around the lip line is gorgeously bee-stung. Plus, red lips really bring out the colour in green eyes.

Kate Bosworth

Dita Von Teese

Queen of the red lip though, is undoubtedly Dita Von Teese.

Sporting a newly reddish colour to her hair, Kate Bosworth set off the strawberry hue with a gorgeously glossy orange lip colour to make her blue eyes really pop. BMAG 37

Model - Ewa Photo by Joanna Kustra

By Maxine Sene Everyone wants to have perfect skin, but not everyone realises that you can achieve gorgeous, radiant skin (without resorting to photoshop!) by simply including the right foods, vitamins and minerals in our diet. That’s right, no expensive creams, pills or skin treatments… just good old nature at its best. Here are some top tips to get yourself looking fab with only a few tweeks and tips. Make the change now and spend the rest of your life looking and feeling fantastic!

Water.

Water has major health benefits and should be an important part of anyone’s diet. We humans are at the end of the day are made up of around 60% water anyway, so let’s keep it that way during the summer months! When it comes to keeping skin healthy, staying hydrated is the best way to flush any toxins out of your body and it helps deliver key nutrients and essential minerals to all the cells around your body. It will also fill up your skin cells which will make your skin look firm and clear, which can really help reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Tomatoes.

Including, or increasing the amount of tomatoes in your diet could have great benefits for your skin. Tomatoes contain high amounts of Lycopene, which studies have found gives people who eat tomatoes more protection against sunburn. Tomatoes have been found to be rich source of vitamin A, with a portion containing 15% of the daily requirement, and up to 40% of vitamin C. People who ate tomatoes frequently have also been found to have more collagen in their skin, which is vital for skin elasticity. So whether it’s plum, cherry or beef tomatoes, get them in your daily diet!

Apples.

An apple’s skin (especially the Monroe, Golden Delicious and Cortland apples) contains an antioxidant named Quercetin. This antioxidant has been proven to protect skin from UV rays. This would increase your protection against getting sunburnt and sun damage from the UV rays. Protect yourself now and don’t pay for the consequences later.

Eggs.

Eggs have also been said to protect skin against sun damage, wrinkles and brown spots. A study on women has proven that those who had eggs in their diet had four times more protection against UV rays than those who didn’t. It is also thought that people who regularly eat eggs have softer, firmer and more toned skin.

Almonds & Avocados.

Almonds and avocados have high levels of vitamin E, which protects the skin from cell damage and encourages healthy skin growth and regeneration, whilst at the same time prevents it from drying up and causing wrinkles. The oils in the avocados are said to help the skin stay firm and it encourages the production of collagen. Don’t fear having too much fat, as they are made up of those healthy fats and don’t contain any cholesterol.

Greek Yogurt.

The protein found in dairy products helps keep the skin plump and prevents the forming of lines and wrinkles. Greek yogurt contains a higher amount of protein than other yogurts, making it extra beneficial to your skin and helps aid cell repair and regeneration.

Kidney Beans.

Kidney beans are high in zinc, which is nature’s answer to a plaster. Zinc is full of healing properties. People who suffer from skin blemishes have typically been found to have low zinc levels. So adding kidney beans to your diet could help you get rid of blemishes and prevent them from returning. Alternatively you can also get Zinc tablets from any health store or supermarket! BMAG 40

about Women that are Actually True Stereotypes are common beliefs about certain social groups that are based on prior assumptions, but while some stereotypes are completely irrational, other stereotypes about women, in particular, are actually true. These actions became labelled as female stereotypes because they have been observed in many women for so long, and therefore prove to be completely correct most of the time. Let’s take a look at some stereotypes about women that are more than often true.

4. WOMEN ARE CATTY

This stereotype is true only under certain circumstances. It is incorrect to say that all women are catty, but it is more appropriate to re-word it to ‘All women CAN be catty.’ Even the calmest and most rational women have their breakdowns and even they can snap at others.

5. WOMEN ARE EMOTIONAL

Women are very emotional creatures! We think too much, read into things with greater detail and unintentionally form close emotional bonds with others. At times this can be our weakness, but most of the time it is our strength. We are compassionate beings that understand the world on a very different level.

1. WOMEN ARE SENSITIVE

6. WOMEN EAT ICE CREAM WHEN UPSET

2. WOMEN LOVE TO TALK

7. WOMEN TELL THEIR FRIENDS EVERYTHING

Most of the stereotypes about women accentuate the sensitivity that most women acquire. There are probably are some exceptions to this statement, because when are there not? However, you have to admit that each and every one of us ladies has a sensitive side. No matter how tough and strong you may present yourself to be, there is a very sensitive girl in there somewhere.

Gossip or not, women love to talk! We love to share our ideas and form significant connections with others by bonding through verbal communication. Give us one topic and we will gradually digress to a completely different subject with ease. It just comes naturally!

3. WOMEN ARE LIGHTWEIGHTS

While many women would beg to differ, science proves that this particular stereotype is true, but not for the reasons you are thinking. The ratio of water to fat is much lower in women and therefore not much of the alcohol can be diluted. In addition, women produce less of the liver enzyme, which converts alcohol into an inactive state. So there is a biologically rational explanation to this phenomenon.

BMAG 42

It is that classic scene in every romance movie when the main heroine eats a tub of ice cream while watching TV after a break up. In case you were wondering, yes, we all do it! While it is not always ice cream, we often turn to our guilty pleasures for comfort. There is nothing better than giving yourself a cheat day and indulging in your favourite foods.

Close girlfriends talk about everything, and by everything, I mean both the important things and other things that are not even conversation-worthy. Especially when it comes to relationships, women turn to each other for advice and they vent to one another about their problems in the hopes of finding a solution as a team.

No stereotype is completely true for every social group, but there are some common occurrences that follow a pattern in women of all ages, nationalities, shapes and sizes.

Think it’s all about the big white meringue dress? Think again. Brides are increasingly opting for coloured gowns, shorter styles and even ditching the dress entirely! So if you’re looking for something a little different on your Big Day, why not get inspired by some of these brides? Let’s start with one of the worlds greatest fashion icons, Elizabeth Taylor, who first married twotime husband Richard Burton in 1964 in a hot canary yellow gown with a wild floral headdress. Unconventional? Yes. Beautiful? Absolutely. There is something unashamedly bridal about Allison Williams’ red carpet look, here with it’s full-length and all-over lace detailing. However, the square neckline feels fresh and new, while the loose and relaxed hairstyle helps to tone down the traditional bridal aspects. With Mila’s white dress and Ashton’s sharp, smart suit, you can forgive us for initially thinking at first glance that this was a snap of the two Hollywood lovebirds tying the knot themselves. However, our eyes deceived us as the two were actually attending the wedding of Mila’s brother, Michael. Nevertheless, this short and flirty strapless number could serve very well as a bridal gown for the star if and when these two tie the knot. At her first wedding to Mel Ferrer, fashion pioneer Audrey Hepburn opted for something a little different to her contemporaries, choosing this Edwardian inspired gown with a nipped in waist, bell sleeves and a knee-length full skirt. An early purveyor of the pink/purple wedding dress trend popular among celebs today, Julianne Moore famously tied the knot in 2003 with long-term love Bart Freundlich in a lilac Prada gown. But one of the chicest brides ever has to have been Mia Farrow, who accompanied her career-defining crop with a smart, sharp and ohso-chic white skirt suit when she married Frank Sinatra. Kate Bosworth tied the knot with her long-term boyfriend, director Michael Polish, in August 2013. The happy couple said ‘I do’ in front of an intimate group of family and friends at Rock Creek in Montana and Kate rocked no less than 2 custom-made Oscar de la Renta gowns for the big day. This 20s inspired lace and chiffon number was something a little different though. Love! When Bianca Pérez-Mora Macias married Rolling Stones front man Mick Jagger in St. Tropez in 1971, the bride famously wore a white skirt suit with a plunging neckline and an impossibly chic wide-brimmed hat - with veil.

BMAG 44

Japanese artist Yoko Ono married John Lennon in 1969 here in Gibraltar. The bride was rather unconventional in her attire, wearing a short mini skirt, knee-high socks and sunglasses. Gwen Stefani is our favourite celeb bride – the punk princess married Gavin Rossdale in a custom-made pink dip-dyed white gown by John Galliano. Another bride to have gone for a splash of colour on her wedding day was 90210 actress Shenae Grimes, who tied the knot with her British beau Josh Beech wearing a black chiffon Vera Wang creation. The wedding is thought to have mixed it up a bit too, with the couple walking down the aisle to house music. When Jamie Oliver tied the knot with Jools in 2000, the bride went for something a bit unusual - as did her groom. While Jamie wore powder blue and snakeskin shoes, Jools went for this grey and white block patterned gown with a traditional veil. Stylist Katy England didn’t wear a conventional gown for her wedding to Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie – instead she chose a pink and white candy-striped confection, while the groom wore a rose-embroidered tux. As a rock ‘n’ roll child it was little surprise that when Leah Wood married Jack MacDonald in 2008, the bride wore a vintage gown for her Midsummer Night’s Dream-themed wedding. We just loved the ornate detailing around the neckline on this dress, as well as those billowing bell sleeves. Despite being one of the most in-demand actresses in Hollywood, Keira Knightley proved her thriftiness when she wore this Rodarte frock to her 2013 wedding to James Righton in the South Of France. The Brit actress had been spotted in the blush pink dress a number of times before and has since worn it again. While there wasn’t anything too non-traditional about Kate Winslet’s gorgeous white Alexander McQueen dress decorated with white and yellow roses, we were big fans of the slightly less orthodox beaded headband. So pretty. If you’re looking for something understatedyet-ethereal, you’ll be eyeing up something similar to the John Galliano-designed gown that Kate Moss wore to her 2011 wedding to

Jamie Hince. Slim-fitting with gorgeous, ornate detailing, it also had a beautiful blush apple green hue to it, too. But sometimes you can get some great ideas from the wedding guests if you’re looking for dramatic or stand-out occasion wear: Enter Naomi Campbell who wowed at the wedding of Prince Albert of Monaco in this dip-dyed green dress with a dramatic asymmetric neckline. When Lily Cole attended Salma Hayek’s wedding to luxury goods magnate FrancoisHenri Pinault in Venice in 2009, we fell completely in love with her chic midnight blue column gown. We’d also like to think that the traditional Venetian mask is obligatory, too. Sure. It was Beyonce and Jay-Z’s wedding but Gwynnie still wore white - and what an outfit. This frilly, micro-mini with princess sleeves is totally wedding appropriate whether you’re a guest or the one actually making your vows! Although, Elettra Rossellini Wiedemann wore this natty little number to an exhibition in New York, this strapless white gown with dramatic A-Line skirt detail would make an ideal alternative wedding dress thanks to monochrome detailing – plus, the shape gives a nice nod to more traditional styles. If you’re looking for something chic and smart for your wedding but don’t want the drama of a long-line gown, this high-shine satin white dress has all the hallmarks of bridal wear but none of the fuss. Thank you, Hilary! Cate Blanchett rarely puts a foot wrong in the style stakes but this simple Ralph Lauren gown with asymmetric detailing to the neckline is simply out of this world – and it’s a very, very stylish choice for any bride looking for something a little different yet utterly gorgeous. At the 2014 TV BAFTAs, Laura Whitmore gave brides-to-be across the land some major dress-spiration with this slinky halter-necked column dress. If you want to go for something a little different on your wedding day but without sacrificing any of the glamour then something like this, is a fab choice. This pastel-spotted shoulder-baring gown by Schiaparelli would provide something a little different on your Big Day thanks to the modern detailing around the neckline. However, it still maintains an element of the traditional thanks to the long, floaty style. We’re a little bit in love with it SJP!

Most people would agree that there is no better way to unwind than having a bubble bath. Your body reaches complete relaxation as you submerge into the warm water and let the delicate aromas of the bath soap fill the room. But, there is just one thing that beats having a bath, and that is having a bath with your partner. You can relax together, enjoy some quality time, and catch up on all of the day’s activities. Keeping that in mind, read on to discover some great bath ideas for couples…

Tub for Two Yin Yang Couple Bath

There is only one place to begin and this is with the revolutionary yin yang couple bath. This bath is ideal for those who want to spend quality time together, yet still need a bit of their own personal space. Not only is the concept of the bath fantastic, but it comes with lots of fancy extras as well. As you can see, the bath lights up to create a special atmosphere. The tub is also extremely relaxing. It is deep and offers users an intense bubbly massage too. This bath presents the ideal of enjoying a bath together yet individually. It is an incredible innovation.

This bath is very similar to the yin yang bath that was mentioned earlier in the article, however the tub for two is definitely more intimate. The handles at either side make it easier for both individuals to get in and out. Moreover, there is undoubtedly a cosy and homely feel about this product.

Utter Tranquillity

When enjoying a bath together you need to ensure your bathroom is a place of serenity and peacefulness. The room is de-cluttered and all elements work together perfectly to create a tranquil environment. This is especially important when sharing a bath because if you are squished in a tub together and the rest of the bathroom is cluttered you can easily feel uncomfortable.

Pool-Like Bath Tub

If you want to ensure there is enough room for both of you, why not go for a pool-like bathtub? Not only will there be plenty of space, but it will be easy for you to both get in and out of the bath as well. And, if that wasn’t enough, you can’t deny the fact that it is a lavish bathroom addition.

Freestanding Tap Lap Bathtub

Instead of going for a bath that is wide enough to fit two people inside, why not go for one that is long enough? This may also turn out to be the more practical choice for your bathroom in terms of dimensions. BMAG 46

There is nothing more frustrating than trying to share a bath and being left with the ‘tap end’. Most couples end up giving up on the idea of sharing a bath together. After all, when one of you can’t lay down it’s not very enjoyable. However, opting for a freestanding tap eradicates the issue. No fights commence because both sides of the bath are as comfortable as one and other.

Jacuzzi

A Jacuzzi was made for sharing. Not only does this style of bath have plenty of space, but the massaging effect on the water is extremely relaxing and good for your health as well. What’s not to love?

A little bit of paint can go a long way and there so many ways in which you can use it around the house it’s hard to even choose. Lucky for you, we already went through tons of ideas and we chose only the most interesting ones. So if you’re curious how paint can change the look of your home, try some of these projects.

Ombre Cabinet Makeover

You can also use paint for more complex projects. For example, give a cabinet or any other pieces of furniture a makeover with an ombre design. Pick at least three colours. One of them should be either black or white. Then, if it’s a cabinet with lots of drawers, paint each drawer a different shade to create this ombre effect.

Stairs

And since we’re now talking about ombre project and how this technique can be used around the house, let’s continue with these ombre stairs. Pick a colour you like. For example, choose blue. Then use different shades: dark blue, blueberry, light blue, etc. and paint each step a different shade BMAG 48

Fridge Revamp

Coasters

If you wish to change the look of your fridge, consider using chalkboard paint. Cover the exterior and then you’ll be able to use it as a writing surface.

Similarly, you can make beautiful neon coasters. Just take a bunch of plain and simple coasters, some acrylic paint and some tape. Decide on a design and paint the portion you wish to be coloured. Let the paint dry and remove the tape.

Flower Vases

Ombre Painted Jars

Using spray paint, you can give your old vases a quick makeover. You can also use other containers instead of actual vases. First spray paint the vases white so you have a clean surface to work with. Using tape, create a design you like. Then simply paint the vases using the colours you like.

Make some beautiful vases or decorative objects using jars and leftover paint. Mix the paint into four colours. Start with the darkest shade and paint the inside of the jar. Cover ¼ of the jar and then continue with the next shade. You go from dark to light and then you let the paint dry.

Ceramic Pots Paint Dipped

Make paint-dipped ceramic pots for your plants and flowers. Start by placing the pot upside down on a flat surface. Then pour some paint and swirl, allowing small drops to spill over the side. Once you’re happy with the design, lets the pots dry but not on paper.

Wall

You can also paint an ombre wall. You could use a single colour. In this case, choose a dark paint colour and paint the bottom half of the wall. While it’s still wet, use a spray bottle of water to thin the top quarter of the paint. Use a sponge to spread and pat the paint up the wall. Blend the colour as you go.

Paint Dipped Chair Legs Faux Malachite Knobs

A simple way of changing the look of a dresser or cabinet is by either replacing the hardware or by changing its colour. For example, you can paint the knobs a beautiful shade like this teal.

Chairs are not something you replace every year so it’s expected to still have some of those old, traditional stools in your home. Give them a quick makeover. Dip the legs in coloured paint. First use tape to mark the portions to be painted and then dip the legs in paint or use a brush.

Pillows

Another interesting project can be making ombre pillows. Take a bunch of white pillows you’re bored with the give them a makeover. Take a sprayer or bottle and make a highly concentrated mixture using fabric dye. Do the darkest layer and then gradually add water for the other layers until you get the desired effect.

Colourful Fridge Magnets

Need some new magnets for the fridge? Make them yourself. You need wooden nickels, acrylic paint, small magnets, a paintbrush and tape. Tape off the design, paint the pieces, let the paint dry, remove the tape and glue the magnets to the little wood pieces.

Striped Wall Mugs

Now let’s see how chalkboard paint can be used for fun and simple projects. For example, you can personalise mugs and glasses. Use tape to create a pattern or design you like. Then, with a small brush, apply the chalkboard paint. Once dry, you’ll be able to customise the mugs and glasses in numerous different ways.

A striped wall is more interesting than a plaint one. But you have to make sure that the stripes are all the same size. For that, first measure the wall you wish to paint and divide it into equal portions. Use tape to delimit the areas that need to be painted. After that, paint each portion, alternating the shades. WIB ANNUAL RECEPTION

Women in Business Gibraltar hosted their annual reception at the Mount, where WIB members enjoyed an evening of networking in the company of His Excellency the Governor Sir James Dutton and Lady Dutton, Members of Parliament, and many distinguished guests. Established in the early 90’s as The Gibraltar Business Network, WIB Gibraltar has evolved over the years, but its aims remain unchanged: to promote the advancement of business women and career women, and to offer a variety of networking opportunities to its members throughout the year.

JOSEPH AND HIS AMAZING COAT

14-year-old Jonathan Lutwyche dominated the Alameda Theatre as ‘Joseph’ in Danza Academy’s bi-annual production staged 24th-27th June. The production was produced and directed by Alfred Rumbo and stages by Danza directors, teachers and choreographers AnneMarie Gomez and Zuleika Green. ‘Joseph’ was the sixth production by Alfred/Danza. Works of the past include ‘The Lion King’ (2004), ‘Beauty and the Beast’ (2006), ‘The Prince of Egypt’ (2008), ‘The Hunchback of Notredame’ (2010) and ‘Pocahontas’ (2012), all traditionally staged at the Alameda.

MULAN

Held between the 25th-27th June at the John Mackintosh Hall, Transitions Dance Academy ‘Mulan’ was quite a hit. As always with their end of term productions, the whole school was involved, from their Baby Stars who are 2.5 years old to their eldest dancers. They started rehearsals towards it in September last year but because they were also taking I.S.T.D examinations, and although the dance pieces were mostly ready, they didn’t actually take it head on until April, specially with the acting.

People often say ‘these things are sent to test us’ or words to that effect. It’s interesting how such words are said with defeat or failure in mind. We might not pass every test but we certainly don’t fail every one, either. This month, you are being tested in some way. It’s as if the universe wants to test your dedication to a certain cause, project, plan or person. If your belief in someone or something is strong and unquestionable, then you can be assured you will pass with flying colours.

Let’s talk about a particular issue that appears to occupy much of your thinking time. You can identify the problem easily enough. It’s the solution that appears unforthcoming. Well, that’s not entirely true. You know what you want and need to see happen yet appear to be struggling with the most effective and swiftest way to achieve this. This month, where you have felt confused and even worried, relief is coming. It might be from an unexpected source, but it is coming.

We have all had ‘Eureka Moments’. We know them when they arrive. Something within us tells us we’ve discovered something that is ‘right’ because it feels ‘right’. We don’t feel a need to question whatever has dawned upon us. This month, expect such a discovery. Not only will this shed essential light on an issue that has confused or daunted you for some time but it will make very clear what you need to do to make real, tangible progress where little or none has existed.

If we feel someone or something is pushing us in a direction we’re reluctant to go, then we naturally resist. We question how someone or something could know better than we do what’s best for us. We resent how what we believe to be essential or appropriate is being overlooked or ignored. But what if we found ourselves pushed in a certain direction we resented and then discovered it was actually a much better option? This month, be flexible and all will be fine.

I read recently a true story about a man involved in a horrendous plane crash who survived with life threatening injuries. He regained consciousness, taught himself to breathe without a respirator and vowed he would walk from the hospital unaided in one year’s time. With effort, he did that. Regardless of how daunting your situation might appear, have faith. An amazing result can be yours if you focus on what you truly want and ignore doubts you could be inclined to listen to.

What might be different about this month? Much depends on how willing you are to abandon a ‘despite what happens today, I will continue to do tomorrow what I did yesterday’ attitude. In other words, how willing are you to remove yourself from a rut or a tired and predictable situation? Coming weeks expect at least one delightful development if you’re willing to take a risk or two. Don’t believe effort isn’t worth making.

TAURUS

Let’s talk about ‘loyalty’ because that word is a key one for you this month. For some time, you have felt pushed toward making a certain decision that doesn’t fill you with confidence or your heart with joy. You have a difficult choice to make and it appears that, no matter what you decide, someone will have reason to question your loyalty to them. So where does this leave you? Expect soon to see the benefits of taking a risk or making a controversial move.

One small, unselfish gesture made to a stranger can transform their day, week, month, year or even their life. We know plans contained within tiny acorns are more complex than any computer circuit board yet integral to the creation of something considerably bigger. This month, prepare to see how powerful that which is small or seemingly insignificant can be. Enjoying a truly delightful and heart-warming experience won’t require nearly as much effort as you might think.

Anyone who has placed a bet in a casino knows a decision made cannot be withdrawn or changed. Once made, the result lies in the hands of fate. We know some decisions are the right ones, even if, after moments of tension, fate causes us to think otherwise. This month, you’re likely to wonder if a decision made recently was the right one. A risk taken might be causing you to reassess your options. Let the proverbial ball settle. Your instincts haven’t let you down.

Imagine crawling across a parched desert wishing for nothing more than a jug of water and then discovering in the not-so-far-off distance a huge water park. There you were, anxiously wanting something small that could make a huge difference and now you’re being presented with something much grander. Not only can your immediate need be met, so too can many others. This month, prepare to have certain expectations met and exceeded in a wonderful way.

Is there an answer for every question? Some would say there is, despite how much in life can’t be explained. If a question can be posed, then it stands to reason that an answer must exist, even if it isn’t immediately obvious. Expect this month to find yourself asking a question that appears unanswerable and facing a tense issue for which no immediate solution is forthcoming. By applying imagination, you will discover an answer that offers hope where you want it most.

21JUN - 22JUL

Some people enjoy chaos. They feel predictable routines or arrangements are too familiar or predictable and decide it might be fun to shake things up a bit. That’s fine for those who thrive in chaotic situations but those who don’t tend not to see the funny side. This month, you could feel inclined to ‘shake up’ a situation to see what the result might be. If you can deal with drama and tension likely to result from doing so, then go ahead. If not, like a wasp or hornet nest, leave it be.
