Believe it or not, spring is nearly over and it’s time to start thinking about the warm summer months ahead, you should also consider your wardrobe. Thankfully, many of the trends that were in style for spring are still going to be in full force through autumn, all it takes is a little modifying. This year’s summer looks are all about confidence and power, but that doesn’t mean you can’t embrace your more feminine side, as couture-worthy creations and pretty palettes add a softer, more sensuous side to the season. Get ready for summer by updating your wardrobe with the latest summer fashion trends. Look for floral dresses in all lengths, from mini to maxi, as well as pleated walking shorts, denim boyfriend shorts and much more. When you head to the beach, put on a pair of colourful summer sandals, along with a sizzling bikini and a glamorous pair of shades. All it takes to look fabulous in the heat this season are a few fabulous fashion staples and B Magazine has got you covered this month. And talking about fashion, this years ‘Runway Fashion Gibraltar 2014’ (pages 8-12) took place on Saturday 3rd May at Tercentenary Hall and B Magazine was on the ground to document the looks that will put a spring in your step come next year. Comfortable, wispy, feminine and monochromatic are just a few ways to describe the collections that were showcased at Runway. Of course Runway is all about local talent and this year the judges had a tough task in deciding on the winner for the New Designer Competition. Five young finalists each showed three designs with Paul Perez and his metal and leatherwork with accessories, being named the winner of this coveted prize, which includes the opportunity to show a collection of twelve outfits in Brighton’s Fashion Week in September. Still with fashion and glamour... It’s here... The beauty pageant that has become THE highlight event in Gibraltar… the 12th Annual MISS GLAMOUR 2014. Seven young ladies will be competing for the coveted title on Friday 11th July. There will also be several awards given such as Miss Bikini, Miss Catwalk and Miss Elegant, just to name a few, and as every year YOU the public can vote for your favourite contestant to win the Miss People’s Choice award. Turn to pages 29-40 and meet this year’s line-up. With the theme of ‘1920’s Glitz & Glam’, the seven contestants were treated to a full makeover by makeup artist Debbie Goodman and hair stylist Natalie Blyth, photographed by world renowned Joanna Kustra at the luxury Sunborn Gibraltar. Remember that tickets priced at £15 will be on sale from CHIQUE BOUTIQUE, 6 Ocean Village Promenade as from Tuesday 17th June. Make sure to buy your tickets early to avoid disappointment! Finally, the 9th consecutive edition of the Wedding Dress Competition 2014 will be taking place on Friday 15th August at the Alameda Open Air Theatre. The one-day fashion festival took place on Saturday 3rd May at Tercentenary Hall from 3pm-midnight and you can be certain of one thing, when it comes to fashion it’s going to be amazing. Comfortable, wispy, feminine and monochromatic are just a few ways to describe the spring/summer 2014 collections that were showcased at Runway Fashion Gibraltar 2014. B Magazine was on the ground to document the looks that will put a spring in your step come next year. R u n way
is a one-day fashion festival with a difference. Based on the same set up as any international fashion week, Runway works by bringing new, innovative designers to each place it is held in. While Fashion Weeks around the world concentrate on showcasing local talent on the catwalk to an international audience, Runway works in exactly the opposite way - by bringing international designers and putting them on one catwalk to a local audience. Runway aims to cultivate the creative fashion industry on home ground, inspiring budding photographers, designers, models, makeup artists and stylists to take that step towards the industry by providing an authentic capsule experience. The set up of Runway was split up into various areas including a Lounge area, which played host to international DJs and bands, an exhibition showcasing local fashion photographers and an auditorium where the fashion catwalk shows took place. There was also a pamper room, brought to you by the wonderful team at Aphrodite Beauty, a local beauty salon based in Ocean Village. The pamper room had everything from mini manicures and pedicures, massages and general spruce ups for the Runway guests. Runway is an excellent platform for local designers, performers and models to get seen and to practice their passion on home soil. It’s also a great opportunity for international designers to showcase their work.

The event, which is all about opportunity, saw Resham Mahtani’s ‘En Vogue’ label on the catwalk, a first for the local designer who describes her work as a fusion of East meets West. Three fabulous international designers showcased their collections, Belgian menswear designer Marius Petrus, Michael Pattison from Berlin and Hasan Hejazi from London. Marius Petrus is the brainchild of Marius Op’t Eynde who has worked with Alexander McQueen, Wrangler and many more. Michael Pattison, originally from New Zealand, is smack bang on the Australian fashion map, and after showcasing at many fashion events in both Australia and New Zealand he moved his business to Germany and this was his first time on the Runway catwalk, where he showed off his newest jungle inspired collection “Urban Safari”. Hasan Hejazi designs have been featured in Vogue, Dazed and Confused, Hunger and many more fashion publications. His last collection was photographed by world-renowned fashion photographer John Rankin and he has designed for such celebrities as Jessie J, Paloma Faith and Iggy Azaela. Of course Runway is all about local talent and this year the judges had a tough task in deciding on the winner for the New Designer Competition. We all want to look good, but we shouldn’t have to deprive ourselves! Our weight-loss plan is designed to get you through the summer in great shape, while still enjoying yourself. Competing with colleagues at work is not always pleasant, but there are certain ways to deal with competition that will make it bearable. No matter how well you get along with colleagues, competing often causes tension in the workplace, which in turn affects the workflow. If you’re uncomfortable with the situation, you may want to look into these ways to deal with competition at work.
My Experience at Wembley By Tiffany Ferrary “First, I never got to know about the competition until my friends and fans in my official sites asked my mum if they could please enter the video of me singing the song ‘And I am Telling You’, and all of a sudden people started sharing, voting and commenting. Of course I never expected winning such a huge worldwide singing online competition with thousands of great singers. I was entered on 14th June 2013, soon after I was told some local friends had also entered and it was great thinking if one of us could actually be there at the London Wembley arena! It seemed incredible! When the competition ended in December I was told I had been practically leading as winner since the beginning, and when my mum read me the letter saying I had won, I just started running and jumping around the house, I couldn’t believe it! It was a dream come true! The flights and accommodation for my mum and me were paid for us, and we stayed at the posh and lovely Hilton. The Gibraltar Government kindly helped us a bit so that my sisters and dad could also come and enjoy this once in a lifetime experience and share it with me! My shock when I first entered the venue was actually thinking how much bigger it was than when I watch it on the TV ‘X Factor’ finals, and how on earth was I going to sing on that humongous stage, but thankfully it was all very well organised, and although at the rehearsals I was nervous, at the end it went very well. I had my own dressing room and an escort who never left my side when I was backstage.
There are no words to describe performing in that huge stage. Later that night at the real event with an audience of 15,000 and seeing everyone liking me! I cannot describe in words the mixture of feelings inside me. Just so you get what I mean, you know when you see someone good at the ‘X Factor’ and people stand and shout and clap, and go totally crazy? Well it was just like that, so imagine how overwhelmed I was, as I just wanted to keep on doing my very best for them all! My mum and sisters cried buckets, so it was impossible to get a good video. We are now all waiting impatiently for the official DVDs and CDs to be delivered so I can watch my own performance lol! After my performance, I was amazed when people came to me to have their programmes signed, take photos with me, and I got lots of gifts from so many people including two dearest fans and friends of mine who have been my fans and followers since the beginning 5 years ago, Elise and Tamara from the UK. I also have to mention another great friend who has also been following me and supporting me and is such a dear family friend who came all the way from another town in UK and also Scotland to see me, and they are David and his son Sean and Joe. I thank them all for their love and support. Once in the VIP lounge we were invited for drinks and canapés, and there was a queue wanting to meet me, talk to me, have the programmes signed, and I mingled in the crowd chatting… I loved it! It seems incredible, how three months have already gone by since the amazing experience, it was absolutely incredible to have been me, Tiffany, on that stage was so awesome I shall never ever forget it, especially as ‘One Direction’ has actually been there too and I am a number one direction fan! The wonderful VIAM team told my dad I have a great talent, which made me embarrassed in front of so many people. Unfortunately he did also say it is a tough business and there are always sponsors needed, and it’s a matter of being at the right time at the right place.

I would do it all over again, and I just want to continue working hard and get nearer to my goal to do what I have always wanted to do, which is to study, get good grades and be able to go to a good music school to progress and further my skills/talent. Although still considered very young, I have always been very sure that I wanted to sing. My very first live performance was when I was given the break at the age of 7 at the Miss Glamour 2009 beauty pageant. Now I think music has got much more serious for me and I have reached a point where I have proven to everyone that its become something serious for me, so I really pray and hope that more and greater opportunities are given to me. Kate Moss, Gwen Stefani and Dita Von Teese - these are just some of the celebrity brides whose wedding dresses have gone on display at the Victoria and Albert museum in London. Each gown is unique to the star and marks a defining moment in the history of the wedding dress. While British supermodel Kate sparked a trend for the “boho-chic” bride, Gwen and Dita proved that daring women could walk down the aisle in bright, coloured numbers.
The extravagant designs, alongside 80 other wedding outfits, are the focus of the museum’s latest fashion exhibition entitled Wedding Dresses 17752014. The display covers two floors and traces the history of bridal wear - from the earliest examples of wedding fashion, including court dresses, to the more glamorous, red carpet-worthy creations by Vera Wang and Jenny Packham. When Kate married guitarist Jamie Hince in 2011, the iconic beauty wowed in her “phoenix feathers” gown. As a close friend of John Galliano, it was only natural for Kate to ask the British fashion designer to create her couture wedding dress and veil. The shimmering “phoenix feathers” sewn onto the sides of the gown reflected the fall of the fabric and the whole dress took 701 hours to embroider. The veil, meanwhile, was made using 270,000 gold sequins, 120,000 foil paillons and 2,800 pearl beads and completed in 253 hours. White was a popular colour for brides in the 18th century but it really became fashionable when Queen Victoria stepped out in a white gown to marry Prince Albert in 1840. It may have been a significant turning point in the history of the wedding dress, but modern brides such as Gwen Stefani and Dita Von Teese dared to turn the tradition upside down when they married in coloured outfits.

Gwen sparked the trend in 2002 when she married fellow musician Gavin Rossdale in an unconventional pink and white silk gown. The design, also made by John Galliano, attracted widespread admiration and media attention. Dita pushed boundaries even further by donning an extravagant purple wedding dress, custom made by Vivienne Westwood, at her wedding to rock star Marilyn Manson in 2005. The low-cut bodice, full ball gown skirt and bold colour created an unforgettable image of the burlesque dancer. A wedding exhibition wouldn’t be complete without the likes of Vera Wang, Christian Lacroix, Alice Temperley and Jenny Packham displaying their bridal wear. The esteemed fashion designers all played a part in the evolution of the wedding dress, with Vera revolutionising traditional styles and making gowns more body-conscious and glamorous. Jenny Packham - a favourite designer with the Duchess of Cambridge, nee Kate Middleton— has opted to showcase her “Rapunzel” dress at the exhibition. Swathed in Swarovski crystals down the back and featuring a high neckline inspired by the opulent Edwardian period, the “Rapunzel” is for the red-carpet bride.
Ian Stuart has displayed his “Flower Bomb” creation while Lanvin has made a mini dress reminiscent of when Sarah Jessica Parker played bride Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City the movie. Two other wedding dresses that are highlights of the exhibition are those of society brides Margaret Whigham and Barbara ‘Baba’ Beaton. Margaret’s 1933 gown, designed by Norman Hartnell, opened the exhibition with its large display of a white, silk satin dress studded with pearl-embroidered transparent stars. The tulle veil is the talking point though, measuring 18 feet and featuring pearl beads trimmed with wax orange-blossom. Marrying one year later, Barbara opted for an ivory-cream silk satin number with a high neckline and long tight sleeves. Again, the train caused quite a stir, extending into two separate double-points of satin.
Wedding Dresses 1775-2014 the exhibition will take place at the V&A museum, London from 3rd May 2014 until 15th March 2015.

URBAN DANCE BACK AT THE MAC
The Urban Dance Annual show took place on Saturday 26th April at the John Mackintosh Hall. “Back at the Mac with Friends” included performances from all the Urban Dance levels and different styles such as hip hop, contemporary, lyrical, modern, commercial, jazz funk and dance theatre. The afternoon was very entertaining, full of variety and something for everyone. This year’s special guests included Peter Chichon, Gibraltar JuJitsu Academy, MMA team, Academia de Baile Eva and the Koala Dance Factory.

The Gibraltar International Dance Association (GIDA) sent a team of over thirty dancers to represent Gibraltar at the IDF World Dance Championships in Croatia. They showcased all the pieces competing in the championships in two presentations held at the John Mackintosh Hall. The team had been training and working very hard for the last 6 months as well as taking modern and classical ballet exams and of course fund raising for their trip.
ALWANI GROUP LOGO COMPETITION The Alwani Group is celebrating its 80th anniversary in 2014. L B Alwani Limited was founded in 1934, and was one of the first companies registered in Gibraltar after the Companies Ordinance came into effect. As a prelude to its celebration of this important anniversary, the Group is pleased to announce that it will be holding a logo competition. It is open to artists and young artists of all ages in Gibraltar. It is intended that the winning logo should be used by the Group for its anniversary events, and thereafter. The prize for the winning logo is a laptop or an iphone (the winner can select either) and a certificate. In addition, if the winner is a school pupil, the Art Department of his or her school will receive a £500 prize for use in purchasing resources for that Department. The panel of judges may commend one or more of the entries and any entry that is Highly Commended will receive a certificate and a prize. Entrants may submit a maximum of two entries each. “The Alwani Group has for many years been a patron of the arts in Gibraltar,” said Kishin Alwani, Chairman of the Group. “It commissioned Gibraltarian artist Ambrose Avellano to paint portraits of all the Chief Ministers of Gibraltar and of the Mayors. The portraits were then gifted to the people of Gibraltar. The Alwani Group has for several years funded awards for art competitions, including ones aimed at young artists. It is therefore only natural that the Group should turn to Gibraltar’s talented artists of all ages in seeking a new logo.” Entry forms and competition rules are available from Carlos of 89 Main Street. All entries are to be received by the Alwani Group at 87/89 Main Street by 4pm on Friday 27th June 2014.
