How to Survive Summer in Gibraltar Winter dressing puts most of us in a rut. Black tights, grey sheath dress, boots and a cardigan become an all-too-easy uniform. Then the sun starts to shine, the temps rise and you’re at a loss when it comes to easy office summer dressing. Keeping fabrics light and not too fitted will help you navigate a commute in un-air conditioned cars and buses. A simple boyfriend blazer kept on the back of your chair can be thrown over anything when the office AC starts blasting at absolute zero. And definitely take advantage of the low heel trend (most of the time) to keep your feet as comfortable as possible. Sandals help, too. Incorporating at least one bright piece into your rotation will keep you feeling current, so will substituting knee-length pencil skirts with patterned culottes. Oh, and for the love of fashion, don’t be afraid to don white or pretty florals. You’re a woman; you’re allowed to look like one. And above all, save the heavy corporate suit pieces for February. Polish native Joanna Kustra developed her love for photography eight years ago and has now turned her hobby into a career. The fashion and beauty photographer recently relocated to the Costa del Sol from the UK to incorporate the Mediterranean climate in her photos. Her photographs have featured in the last five B Magazine covers and recently shot the Miss Glamour 2014 pageant photos. The talented photographer talks to B Magazine about her views on Photoshop, her photographic style and her hopes for the future. Where are you from originally and what influenced your decision to move to Spain?
“I grew up in a small town in south-eastern Poland. I discovered my passion for photography during my studies in Cracow, Poland. After college I decided to travel to London to work there and gain experience. Britain is a fantastic place for creative people and I have broadened my artistic horizons there, however one of the biggest issues is the weather. Not only because I prefer south Mediterranean sunshine more, but also because it was tricky to plan to shoot outside. I have put a lot of studio-based works into my portfolio while in London, but after 5 years I was longing for some more exotic outdoor locations. Therefore when an opportunity arrived and my partner was offered a position here in Gibraltar we were both more than happy to make the move.”
How did you start working alongside B Magazine?
“When I moved to Costa del Sol I looked for some local magazines in order to meet some like-minded creative people to shoot with. I approached the editor of B Magazine, Bianca Zammit, and after the first meeting she trusted me with a cover space for the March issue. Since then I have had the pleasure to work on five consecutive issues together.”
When did you first develop an interest in photography?
“My adventure with photography began as a hobby. I bought my first digital camera 8 years ago and started shooting my family and friends. I soon ran out of family members to photograph and I started to look around for interesting faces in the modelling agencies. In the meantime I studied German Philology and Linguistics, but I quickly realised that being a professional photographer is what I actually wanted to do.”
What are your favourite photographs to take?
“I am definitely into photographing people. It doesn’t matter whether it’s fashion, portraits or beauty. Fashion and beauty photography is about showing people garments and places in the most beautiful and attractive ways. It is like imagining perfect world in my head and converting that into a photo. Portraiture is about depicting the model’s personality. It requires making a person standing in front of my camera relaxed and, even more challengingly, to trust me. It is quite tricky but that kind of interaction with people is almost addictive.”

Are you a fan of Photoshop and retouching, or do you prefer to keep your photos as natural as possible?
“I would say I have got a balanced approach to retouching. I am neither a great fan of Photoshop nor a passionate opponent. Basically I do everything possible to achieve the desired effect before pressing the shutter button. Then I enhance the picture in postproduction only as needed. In most cases I treat Photoshop as a darkroom, an additional tool to achieve what I want. I am not a fan of altering people’s features in postproduction to the point they can’t recognise themselves, unless there is some specific purpose for it or they have been paid for that. Obviously, there are different standards in news and reportage photography than there are in fashion and beauty industries. Fashion photography is an art that almost has no boundaries. On the other hand it is also a business in which altering photos can be used in order to magnify the effect to lure the customer. It is very hard to draw a distinct line between what is too much and what is still acceptable. An example of what I would consider stepping out of the boundaries of a good taste would be a skin product advert showing a well-known celebrity who is over 40 years of age and has been airbrushed to look 20 years younger, promising flawless skin.”
What is the best/worst thing about working with models?
“The great thing about working with professional models is the fact that they know how to adjust a pose and facial expressions to the type of the photo shoot. Because they know their strengths and weaknesses, professional models are usually very easily directed and can deliver the perfect shot in a much shorter time than a beginner would do. To be perfectly honest I cannot name a single bad thing about working with models, especially if they are very experienced. Having said that I am conscious that there are a lot of girls who do modelling purely for fun, not knowing which poses or angles are good for their body types. If they want to copy high fashion magazine poses it is best if they have some professional help to avoid their pose looking more grotesque rather than fashionable.”

What inspires you most in your work?
“I am definitely influenced by other photographers, clothing designers and other artists, especially painters - I like to draw my inspiration from classical paintings and add a little modern twist to it. Obviously it is also part of my job to follow news and observe current trends in the industry to stay up to date.”
Who is the most inspirational person you have photographed and why?
“I have photographed a lot of strong personalities; from celebrities to wannabe models who were determined to become successful and were later featured in big magazines and campaigns. A lot of those people were inspirational in their own way, but it is impossible for me to select a single, most important one. The way I see it is that every single project is a meeting with different people. That is why I am so focused on building good relationships not only with my models, but also with the whole team. When you are open to what other people bring to the table the final effects can be so much better.”
Are you very critical of your own work?
“I believe that without being slightly self-conscious it is very easy for your career to stagnate. I have always been pushing myself to constantly go outside of my comfort zone. To try new things, work with most interesting people and produce the best images possible. The most challenging however is to remain open to critical opinions coming from other people - I find that once you stop being defensive and start to listen to helpful voices you can go even further.”
How would you describe your photographic style and what do you think you bring to the photographic scene that makes you unique?
“I hear people defining my style as very painterly. I personally like that term, because that is exactly what I aim for in most of my work. I aim to, as they say, “paint” my images with light. It would be great to think that my style, which I have developed over the years is unique – I constantly work on making it even more interesting.”
Have you travelled in order to take photographs?
“Because I have lived in several locations it is quite frequent I need to travel to participate in projects organised there. A bigger network of friends, creative people and clients means it is more likely I will find interesting productions, not necessarily next to my home. It is a global village after all and from my perspective if the project someone approaches me with is a challenge and an opportunity to grow, travelling will not be a problem. For the time being however, I try to reverse that flow and get my existing clients to travel into the sun, instead.”
What would be your dream location for a photo shoot? “Would it be too cheeky to say I have just moved to my dream location? But seriously speaking it is not exactly the location that matters that much to me. It is more about the idea, the challenge and aesthetics that drive my passion.”
What do you enjoy to do outside of photography?
“Music had been in the centre of my artistic life before I discovered photography. I am currently lacking an instrument to play, as after the move I didn’t bring my piano with me. I also recently rediscovered the pleasure of reading books by introducing audio books to the mix. It is fantastic as I can do it even while working. Since the London Olympics I have also been into fencing. Luckily it turned out that Costa del Sol has a fantastic fencing club that does épée!
What are your plans and goals for the future?
“There is a set of near future goals that I am pursuing – expanding my portfolio with new sunny locations here in Gibraltar and Spain, finding an agent in Spain to give my career a boost and learning Spanish. The more long-term vision keeps on changing as different and unforeseen opportunities keep on emerging. Which to be honest, is what I love about my career. You just cannot predict where it will take you. In the long run, I would like to keep getting better. I would also like to be featured in a really well known global magazine in the future, and to continue to influence even larger numbers of people with my work.” BMAG 37
1. YOU’LL GET A BETTER WORKOUT One of the best reasons to exercise solo is the fact that you’ll probably get a better workout. You won’t need to worry about your gym buddy keeping up with you, meaning you can lift those really heavy weights if you feel like it or go that extra mile.
2. YOU WON’T BE DISTRACTED Sometimes when you work out with a friend, you end up talking the entire time and having a great conversation instead of a great workout. Going to the gym on your own means you won’t be distracted by gossip and rumours. Save the girl talk for a happy hour or night on the town and instead, focus on pushing yourself to the max while you’re working out.
3. YOU’LL BE ABLE TO PACE YOURSELF BETTER Have you ever worked out with a friend only to realise you two weren’t at the same fitness level? Whether you’re struggling to keep up with your workout partner or always having to wait for them to catch up, working out on your own eliminates this problem. When exercising on your own, just think of the competition as yourself! BMAG 38

Not having a partner might feel lonely or odd at first, but you’ll love being able to do as many sets of squats or bicep curls as you want and not worry about your partner getting tired or bored.
Between work, family, friends, and other stressors, everyone needs some alone time. Working out on your own might be just what you need to unwind and relax after a hectic day at the office. Whatever aggressions or pressures you’re feeling; throw them into your next workout! You’ll definitely reap the rewards.
5. YOU CAN LISTEN TO YOUR FAVORITE MUSIC
7. YOU CAN GET YOUR DREAM BODY
Not having a work out partner to talk to means you can catch up on all your favourite music. There’s nothing like hitting the treadmill to your favourite tracks or lifting weights to your favourite hip hop music. Use the time alone to listen to music. Explore new artists, bands, and songs until you’ve figured out the perfect play list!
I almost forgot to mention one of the coolest benefits of working out on your own: your dream body! Working out by yourself allows you to do the kind of exercises to get the shape and figure you’ve always wanted. Everyone has a different body type and it’s important to customise your workout to your individual needs.
DO THIS Use a pair of 6 or 10kg dumbbells and do each pair of exercises as a superset. Beginning with exercise 1a, do as many reps as you can in 30 seconds. Then rest for 30 seconds. Next, do exercise 1b, completing as many reps as you can in 30 seconds, and then rest for 30 seconds. That’s 1 round. Complete 4 rounds of superset 1, then rest 2 minutes before moving on to superset 2 for 4 rounds. Add these supersets to your workout routine 2 or 3 times a week. BMAG 40

CALENTITA 2014
This years 8th Calentita took place on Saturday 21st June in Casemate Square. Known as Gibraltar’s top street party and food festival at the same time, record-breaking number of people attended the event. This year’s event expanded into Market Place, where apart from a full host of food stalls you could find tables, and a thriving arts and crafts market with local crafters displaying their products. The extra space made it much easier to get around and result in a much more enjoyable Calentita.

MRS RODRIGUEZ’S BIRTHDAY SURPRISE
Known to her family as “Mama Mia”, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren surprised her with an early party to celebrate her 86th birthday at Mamma Mia Pizzeria & Pasta House. Not only was she happy and surprised to see her family there, but she was overwhelmed when she opened her birthday present, a holiday with all expenses paid. Dancers from Gibraltar attended the 12th International Dance Federation World Dance Championships between 20th-25th May in Croatia. The team shone in the disciplines of Fantasy Dance, Dance Show and Free Style, returning home with a total of 27 trophies - 14 gold, 6 silver and 7 bronze...... Congratulations!!!
