LETTER BRYAN & BIANCA ZAMMIT

It just seems like yesterday that we went through the madness, preparation and celebration that surround Christmas and New Years. Now we find ourselves in the month of February, with yet another wonderful day of celebration… Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s Day seems to come round so fast and there are so many Valentine gift ideas you could incorporate into the day. On this special day it is all about showing how much you care about your partner. If you put a little thought into it, there are so many Valentines Day ideas you could introduce into the day to make it one to remember. To help you along the way we have suggested a few gift ideas for your loved one. Turn to pages 18-19 for ‘Gifts for Her’ and pages 46-48 for ‘The Perfect Valentine’s Gift for Your Man’. I love seeing the fashion of the Hollywood actresses, but I also love looking to the fashion of women who have become political style icons even more. In the last 60 years, there have been several key women married to high-ranking officials who have become some of the most watched women of fashion. What is great about these political style icons is they do a lot of great work for their countries, and they just happen to look good doing it. These women are true role models for both fashion and life. Turn to pages 24-26 and see which ‘7 Political Style Icons We All Look Up To’.

February 2014

Fashion should be inspiring, unique and strong. Women should wear the clothes and never let them wear her, that’s what great style is all about. The confidence to be true to yourself. Most of us have a hard time loving our body for what it is but you’ve got to love yourself and feel confident no matter what! Banish those negative thoughts and hop on the body confidence wagon! We want to make all you ladies out there feel as beautiful and fabulous as you are. Turn to page 28 for the ‘10 Top Reasons to feel Body Confident’. On another note, on Friday 28th February one lucky girl will be crowned Dream Girl of the Year 2014. The 9th edition of the competition will be taking place at the John Mackintosh Hall at 8:30pm. Who will it be? Turn to pages 8-9 for this year’s line-up and to vote for your favourite contestant to win the Miss People’s Choice Award 2014. Tickets are priced at £15 and will be on sale from Chique Boutique, 6 Ocean Village Promenade as from Monday 10th February. The 12th edition of Miss Glamour, which is aimed for young ladies between the ages of 1520, will be taking place on Friday 11th July at the Alameda Open Air Theatre. Entry forms can already be collected from Short Cut, 4 Ocean Height Gallery. For further details on any of the above events, please contact us on 54 000 377. On a final note, Mamma Mia has now re-opened after our well deserved annual three weeks staff holidays. We have been asked by many of our regular clients to please not close again, but it’s the only time we get to also give the restaurant a good coat of paint and to take out all the kitchen machinery and strip them right down for a full MOT. We have also fitted the terrace with very much needed new furniture. If you are still looking for a romantic dinner, where better to go than to Gibraltar’s favourite Italian restaurant. Mamma Mia is already taking bookings for Valentine’s Night. There is no fixed menu, just order from our very extensive popular menu, so you can eat and spend as much or as little as you like. Everyone at B Mag wish all the love birds out there, both young and old a Happy Valentine’s Day and don’t forget, you need to show your love for each other everyday, so make each day a Valentines Day, and keep that spark going in your relationship. However, it doesn’t have to be a special time of the year like Valentine’s Day to celebrate love. Whether or not we are in a loving relationship makes no difference, for each day is cause for celebration to love and honour all the people who are part of our lives. Each day we should give thanks, be grateful, and express love to all who we encounter during the course of our day. Happy Valentine’s Day… Until the next issue… Ciao for now. Much Love B&B

Golden Globes 2014 Red Carpet Fashion Highlights The awards season officially kicked off on 12th January with the 71st Golden Globes Awards Ceremony - and we couldn’t have been more excited. The 2014 Golden Globe Awards show was about confident, bold dressing, with women looking like the most grown-up, self-assured versions of themselves, be it Emma Watson in Dior Haute Couture trousers, Lupita Nyong’o in a fire engine red Ralph Lauren Collection or Cate Banchett in a stunning Armani Privé. It was also a standout night for standout baby bumps, as pregnant stars like Kerry Washington, Drew Barrymore, and Olivia Wilde dressed with style for two.

This year’s award show was sparkling with fashion and beauty style.

Lupita Nyong’o The breakout star and fashion “it” girl - nominated for her role in 12 Years a Slave - kept it sleek and modern in a Ralph Lauren Collection caped silk gown with Fred Leighton diamonds.

Cate Blanchett The Blue Jasmine nominee wowed in an elegant black lace and tulle Armani Prive cap-sleeve dress with a cutout back detail. She accented her look with classic Chopard diamonds from the jeweller’s Green Carpet Collection.

Michelle Dockery Margot Robbie “It’s Gucci with vintage Van Cleef jewels,” the Wolf of Wall Street actress said of her dazzling oneof-a-kind silk crepe gown with emerald satin Louboutins.

The Downton Abbey actress donned one of the evening’s hottest trends, a high-low hemline, in a beautifully embroidered Oscar de la Renta dress with Bulgari jewels and Christian Louboutin heels.

Amy Adams The American Hustle nominee took the plunge in a bold crimson gown by Valentino with Lorraine Schwartz jewels.

Emma Watson Naomi Watts The actress dazzled in an embroidered halter gown by Tom Ford with strappy Jimmy Choos and Bulgari jewels. BMAG 10

Olivia Wilde The Her actress and mum-tobe look radiant in an emerald embroidered silk georgette gown by Gucci Premiere with Forevermark diamonds.

Fashion-forward Emma gets points for the element of surprise... her red Dior Haute Couture gown opens up in the back to reveal her killer legs in a pair of navy blue cigarette trousers. It’s a love it or a hate it kind of dress!

Mila Kunis The presenter paired Gucci Premiere’s sterling silk chiffon halter gown with Gemfields emerald stud earrings.

Maria Menounos Emma Roberts Kate Beckinsale Kate took the red carpet by storm in a divine Zuhair Murad gown. Spot on Kate!

Va-va-voom! We’re the Millers star Emma Roberts knocked it out of the park in an off-the-shoulder Lanvin dress that oozed glamour and old Hollywood sophistication.

Warning: This dress is not for the faint hearted. One of the first to arrive on the red carpet, TV personality Maria had us paying “extra” close attention when she appeared in a bold pink dress with well-placed sheer cut-outs.

Amber Heard Of course Amber looks amazing in her midnight blue slit-up-to-there Versace dress, but it also looks like she spent a lot of time perfecting that leggy pose of hers in the mirror.

Sarah Hyland Modern Family continues to reign supreme at the Golden Globes year in and year out, giving us plenty of opportunity to watch 23-year-old Sarah blossom into one of our favourite red carpet style stars. This classic belted silhouette feels youthful thanks to its playful shade of pink.

Kate Mara House of Cards actress Kate Mara was every inch the glamour girl in a silvery number by J. Mendel.

Uma Thurman A turtleneck on the red carpet? If anyone can pull it off, it’s Uma! The actress wore metallic Versace to the awards show extravaganza.

Leslie Mann Is Leslie’s black lace peplum column gown a little Morticia Adams? Yes, but it’s strangely refreshing to see her venture over to the dark side for once.

Ariel Winter Lizzy Caplan Master of Style: Wearing her hair in a dramatic deep side part, Lizzy mastered the red carpet in a unique black Emilio Pucci column gown with intricate gold sleeves. BMAG 12

Modern Family star Arial pulled off her deep red Mikael D dress flawlessly, but not without a few hiccups behind the scenes. Earlier in the day, the actress tweeted she was being sewn into her dress. “Wouldn’t be the Golden Globes without a crisis!” she posted.

Emma Thompson Emma paid tribute to Hollywood’s golden age in a one-of-a-kind Lanvin gown and peep-toe heels.

Miranda Kerr Wowee… Miranda went commando in a raunchy black Pucci gown.

Jessica Chastain The actress went for classic Hollywood glamour in a strapless Givenchy by Ricardo Tisci gown with monochromatic detailing. She accented the look with a Bulgari glittering diamond necklace and long loose waves.

Reese Witherspoon Reese keeps the rest of her look simple, and lets her perfectly tailored teal number (and her curves) do the talking.

Sofia Vergara Buxom star, Sofia dominated the red carpet in a lavish black gown. And have you seen that statement necklace? Divine.

Zooey Deschanel The always-sweet Zooey oozes sugar, spice and everything nice, from the flower in her hair down to the beading on her pumps. Her Oscar de la Renta ensemble was perfect mix of vintage glam.

Taylor Swift This girl never fails to wow us. Tay Sway embodied old Hollywood glamour in a red and black strapless Carolina Herrera dress.

Amy Poehler Simple and chic with just the right amount of sexy, Amy proves she’s got more than just jokes.

Drew Barrymore Mum-to-be, Drew Barrymore looked gorgeous in a floweradorned Monique Lhuillier number.

Hayden Panettiere Hayden looks like a sleek goddess in a black and white Tom Ford gown. We’re obsessed with the slicked-back hair too!

Jenna Dewan-Tatum Hot mama Jenna glowed in Roberto Cavalli as she glided down the red carpet. Her gown hit her curves in all the right places.

Kerry Washington White hot even when dressing for two, mum-to-be Kerry Washington can do no wrong on the red carpet.

Helen Mirren Helen looked ageless in a mint Jenny Packham gown.

Kaley Cuoco Sweeting Kaley looked lovely in a blossoming Rani Zakhem gown (while she cuddled up to new hubby, Ryan all CONTINUE evening). NEXT PAGE BMAG 13

And the NOT so hot…

Julia Roberts Jennifer Lawrence Jennifer is on top of the world right now with yet another win, but her Dior gown? Not so heavenly.

Julia Roberts was all about sophisticated glamour arriving in her Dolce and Gabbana dress and Christian Louboutin heels. She could have been stunning, if only she left her shirt at home.

Tina Fey Berenice Bejo Collared button-downs belong in the office, not on the red carpet, and flowers belong in the garden, not on her hips.

Paula Patton Paula is apparently borrowing style tips from Lady Gaga. Is it just me or does the left side of her dress look ready to attack? BMAG 14

Unfortunately, Amy’s co-host couldn’t keep up in the style department. Her poofy gown’s floral print was mistaken for everything from flamingos to jellyfish on Twitter.

Zoe Sladana That’s one interesting take on the little black dress. Zoe wore a complicated number by Prabal Gurung to the 2014 Golden Globes Awards in Beverly Hills.

Sandra Bullock This candy-coloured Prabal Gurung confection was not one of Sandy’s best looks. We still love her though!

Lena Dunham The Girls star continues to struggle with choosing silhouettes that flatter her body type... no wonder she opts to go nude so often on set.

Rashida Jones Are those palm trees creeping up Rashida’s Fausto Puglisi dress? An odd choice for the Golden Globe perhaps, but a glitzy one nonetheless.

Aubrey Plaza Purple and pink and oh so matchymatchy, Aubrey’s look would have been more of a hit at junior prom.

Heidi Klum We’re not too sure about this sheer + tassel combo. Did Heidi forget she was attending the Golden Globes?

Melissa McCarthy Comedy queen, Melissa disappointed wearing a not-soglam dress. Check out the ratty lining.

7 Political Style Icons

We All Look Up To

I love seeing the fashion of the Hollywood actresses, but I also love looking to the fashion of women who have become political style icons even more. In the last 60 years, there have been several key women married to high-ranking officials who have become some of the most watched women of fashion. What is great about these political style icons is they do a lot of great work for their countries, and they just happen to look good doing it. These women are true role models for both fashion and life.

1. SHEIKHA MOZA BINT NASSER Sheikha Moza bint Nasser is married to the Sheikh of Qatar, and she plays a major role in the politics of Qatar. She has been instrumental in pushing forward the agenda for Qatar to be a knowledge-based society through her role as Vice Chair of the Supreme Council of Education. Sheikha Moza bint Nasser is also the chairperson of the Qatar Foundation for Education. Science, and Community Development, the Vice Chair of the Supreme Council of Health, and has an active role in UNESCO. If that is not enough to keep her busy, somehow she has found the time to become one of the great political style icons. She has graced the pages of Vogue and Vanity Fair, and is known for elegantly mixing traditional Middle East style with couture. BMAG 24

2. QUEEN RANIA OF JORDAN You may have seen Queen Rania on the Forbes list of the 100 most powerful women. She has made the list twice, and for good reason. Queen Rania started as a businesswoman before she married into the royal family of Jordan. As queen, she has been open about her progressive economic and social ideas, and she has pushed for educational reforms. Queen Rania is also an ardent supporter of the use of micro funds to help new entrepreneurs get started. Aside from being known for her politics, Queen Rania is also known as one of the most beautiful women. She has incredible fashion sense and is a trendsetter in the Middle East. Queen Rania is well known for her elegant flowing dresses, which she often wears to formal events.

3. PRINCESS GRACE OF MONACO Before she was famous for being a princess, Grace Kelly was a Hollywood star. Grace Kelly starred in many movies and even won an Academy Award. As an actress in the 1950s, she became a fashion icon and loved wearing Dior and Chanel. After she married Prince Rainier III of Monaco, Princess Grace remained a stylish woman. She also became active in several charities, founding both the World Association of Friends of Children and the Princess Grace Foundation. Princess Grace was an elegant, timeless beauty that became known for her fashion, but she was also very charitable women and should be remembered for her good work CONTINUE as well. NEXT PAGE

4. JACQUELINE KENNEDY

Jacqueline Kennedy is one of the most famous political style icons in the United States. When John F. Kennedy became president in 1961, Americans started watching the First Lady’s fashion choices. Her young and stylish fashion sense appealed to American women and made her very popular. It also made her famous oversees. While on a state trip in France, President Kennedy remarked that he was “the man who accompanied Jacqueline Kennedy to Paris.” The First Lady knew her audience and wore elegant French designs, which made her even more liked in France. While she was known for her fashion, Jacqueline Kennedy was also very active in charities during her husband’s short term in office. She supported the American Cancer Society, the American Association of Maternal and Infant Health, and the Girl Scouts. Her charitable work is not well known, but it made Jacqueline Kennedy a true role model.

BMAG 26

6. KATE MIDDLETON Even prior to her engagement to Prince William, Kate Middleton was noted as being a woman of fashion. However, since becoming the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate has been followed by countless bloggers for her fashion choices. She is probably one of the most stylish women today, and, even though she does wear high-end fashion, she also wears affordable pieces that are snatched up after she is seen in them. Kate Middleton can’t be mentioned without discussing her famous wedding dress. The elegant long sleeved lace dress was designed by Sarah Burton and was widely copied after the wedding. While I am sure you know her for her style, you might not know that Kate Middleton has been active in charities for many years. She even went to Chile before starting university to help with environmental programs and community projects for disadvantaged children.

5. DIANA, PRINCESS OF WALES

7. MICHELLE OBAMA

The world watched when Diana Spencer stepped out of the car in the famous David and Elizabeth Emanuel wedding dress. I was lucky enough to see this dress when it went on tour as part of her fashion collection in 2012, and I can tell you the cameras didn’t do it justice. It is an extremely detailed dress that has crystals sewn in it, and while poofy, it is beautiful. The fashion choices of Diana, Princess of Wales after that were much more down to earth, and even more elegant and beautiful. She became a woman to watch for her fashion sense. She also became a woman to watch for her humanitarian work. Diana famously walked through a minefield in Angola during her work for the HALO trust. She was also a supporter of AIDS charities. Diana became famous for her charity work, and is still a woman for girls to look up to.

These women are all people to look up to. They have become famous in part for their fashion, but they are much more than style icons. They are women who work hard to make their countries and the world a better place, and that is why we should follow them as role models.

As soon as she was seen on the campaign trail for President Obama’s first election, Michelle Obama became a fashion icon. Her style choices are fashionable and relatable. They are also often affordable. Many of the First Lady’s looks have been iconic, such as the J. Crew belt she wore during the first inauguration ceremony. The Jason Wu dress she chose to wear the night was so captivating it launched the designer’s career. Although Michelle Obama is a fashionable woman who has given a spotlight to American fashion, she has also given a voice to military families and waged her own war against childhood obesity. While taking notes from her stylebook, we should remember Michelle Obama for her agenda to get America healthy and keep military families in our minds.

10 Top Reasons to feel Body Confident Most of us have a hard time loving our body for what it is but you’ve got to love yourself and feel confident no matter what! Banish those negative thoughts and hop on the body confidence wagon! We want to make all you ladies out there feel as beautiful and fabulous as you are. So many of you don’t consider yourself as having a ‘good’ body, well let me tell you, you do! Whether you are tall, short, skinny, large, or even if you have an ‘Hourglass’, ‘Pear’ or ‘Rectangle’ body shape, you’re all amazing! Here are some reasons why you should start loving your 1. LIFE IS TOO SHORT You’ve heard it a million times, but now is the time to wake up and think body and being body confident today.

Talking about their collaboration with Revlon recently, she said, “When we were first approached by Revlon about a potential collaboration, Keren (Craig, Marchesa co-founder) and I were really excited about the chance to partner with an iconic brand that believes, as we do, in making women feel beautiful while remaining true to herself. Through Revlon’s incredible global reach, we will be able to bring a little piece of Marchesa to women around the world.” “Fashion and beauty are about self-expression and experimentation and taking a creative approach to your personal style,” said Keren back in June. Makeup Bag Detox If your makeup bag weighs more than your handbag, or if you spend more than 5 minutes rummaging for the right eyeliner every morning, then it’s time for a serious makeup bag detox.

GET BACK TO BASICS

One way of detoxing your makeup bag is to think of it as a wardrobe containing all your clothes. You always need to keep your basics, so just like you will always need support underwear on hand, keep your complexion products (primer, foundation, concealer, powder). Crumbling compacts, cracked lids, sticky lipgloss coated with fluff, our makeup bags are subject to some of our darkest secrets. Whilst their contents make us look polished, a peek inside the makeup bag of many a groomed goddess will reveal enough cosmetic carnage to make most beauty addicts gasp in horror. So, with fresh starts in mind, strip back to the bare essentials and revamp your makeup bag. De-cluttering your makeup can help you to get more out of it (and will give you more time in the mornings too). Find out how to detox your makeup bag...

SHELF LIFE

No matter how expensive they were when you bought them, continuing to use out of date products is not a good idea - as well as performing badly they could be a source of bacteria - and no one wants to glossing their lips with that! Lip-gloss & lipstick: You will know if a lipgloss is out of date, as it will begin to smell. A lipstick however, if you take good care of it and don’t leave it in the sunshine or humid locations can last a long time. Mascara: My rule with mascara is - when you find one that you love - stick to it! Mascara is one of the products that tends to have the shortest shelf life. You will know when it needs to be replaced, as it will begin to smell and start to get very dry and clumpy. To keep your products fresh and to maximise their shelf life, you have to take good care of them. Keep them out of extreme sunlight and extreme temperatures and avoid keeping your products near a window or in a bathroom where the air will vary between damp and dry. Foundation: I really take good care of my foundation by ensuring to keep it out of the sun and use it thinly too. Foundations usually last a year but if you keep it clean and look after it, as well as being careful not to use too much - it should last much longer. If you have the correct tools such as a foundation brush or sponge, you will find that you don’t use too much and this will also help to make it last a long time. BMAG 32

Like your comfy jeans, or that coloured jumper that brings out your eyes, these are your ‘go to’ essentials; the purple that brings out your green eyes, the sheer lipstick that’s easy to wear... Then find your makeup bag equivalent of Fashion Accessories. Grab that Matte Red Lipstick that has dropped to the bottom of the bag and copy the latest look form the catwalk.

CAPSULE MAKEUP

Detoxing your makeup bag doesn’t mean ridding it of everything. A good makeup bag detox should leave you with the essentials that really work for you. Don’t keep that orange lipstick just because it’s on trend - if it makes you look washed out then ditch it.

Chose your contents carefully. If you only have room for five products, make them the best you can afford. If all your makeup bag contents are dependable products that suit you, then you’re onto a winner.

MULTI PURPOSE MAKEUP

Streamline your makeup bag by stocking up on multi-purpose products. Tinted moisturisers are perfect for light daytime coverage and can be used instead of foundation and a separate day cream. Products that work on lips, eyes and cheeks are also a great way to cut down on unnecessary items and speed up your makeup regime.

KNOW WHEN TO THROW

If your makeup bag is filled with cracked and crumbling powders, there are ways to make things go further. Ask yourself when doing a makeup bag detox:

.Anything that has been there for a long time? Throw it out. .....smells? Cream splitting or smells? Throw it out. Crush and use as loose pigment. ..Cracked? Don’t know why I ever bought it? Use it just as a liner, or mix with another shadow to create a new one.

The less is more approach makes sense - if you haven’t used a product for a long time the chances are it is going to continue sitting there, gathering dust. Why not banish your ‘one day’ products to a drawer of makeup to use on special nights out only, or when you are feeling experimental. Your day-to-day makeup bag should contain the essential items you need to get gorgeous in a jiffy every morning - and that means decluttering.

If you are serious about streamlining the contents of your makeup bag, then one good tip is to simply buy a smaller bag! This way you won’t be able to overload it.

Everyone should have a capsule makeup bag containing mascara, a concealer and one multiple product that could provide colour for your cheeks, eyes and lips.

KEEP IT CLEAN

Applying makeup with quality brushes helps achieve much better results but, if not looked after properly they can harbour nasty germs. Brushes can hold on to bacteria, which is just great for spreading spots! It’s good practise to invest in a good cleanser for your make up brushes. Failing to clean your brushes regularly can also lead to infection. Because of these risks, sharing makeup might not be a great idea. Don’t share products - if you do let someone else use them make sure you wash, clean, wipe or sharpen them before you use them on yourself again as this will help to prevent cross infection. This is especially important when using eyeliners, lip balms, lipsticks or makeup brushes.

z e r a v l A h Elizabet

Eli’s Dreams

Elizabeth Alvarez is a 49-year-old housewife from Gibraltar married to Denis for 34 years. Mum to Paula (34), Denis Jr. (32) and granny to Raiden (1). Her hobbies are listening to music, drawing, sewing and anything that has to do with crafts. She is a restless person who is always looking of new ways of creating art. From a handmade doll to a hand painted t-shirt to handmade flowers, practically anything that comes to her mind. Read on and find out what inspires Elizabeth to produce her creations…

How and when did you start crafting?

“I have been crafting since I was very young about 5/6 years old. I remember sitting with my dad in the afternoon after school and asking him to show me how to draw and make things.”

Why do you craft? How did you learn?

“I have always liked to draw and sow, so every chance I have I dedicate to create my dreams. My dad taught me nearly everything I know. When I was about 7 an old lady who lived near us taught me how to do crotchet. Now when I want to do something, which I don’t know how to do, I use the Internet. You can find loads of very well explained tutorials on line.”

How often do you craft?

“At all times. I’m crafting even when I’m asleep (haha). I am always thinking of new things to do and reinvent myself everyday.”

What sorts of things are inspiring you right now?

“I get inspired by everything really. I like to recycle stuff. I love getting an empty tin and decorate it to make a lovely tissue holder, or use plastic bags to make an original handbag. Although it also depends on the season we are in. I normally don’t feel like knitting a woolly jumper in summer or make a nice flowery dress in the winter.”

Where do you look for inspiration?

“Mainly my dreams, but lately since my grandson, grandnieces and grandnephews were born I love making clothes and cuddly toys for them.”

What are your ‘can’t-live-without’ craft-room essentials?

“My glasses, without them I can’t see a thing… haha. Also my sewing machine, my scissors, my paints, my ribbons, my fabrics, my chair, my laptop, everything in my work room actually, but if I have to choose, it would be a pencil to draw out my ideas, my scissors to cut them out and my sewing machine to make them a reality.”

How would you describe your style? Are there any crafters/artists/designers that you particularly look up to? “Eli’s Dreams Style… I try and give all my creations my own twist. I think I don’t really know any well known crafters/artist/designers who I look up to, apart from my friends in the Rock Crafters Group.” BMAG 34

What do you do to keep yourself, your space and your time organised? “Organised?? What does that word mean? haha”

We live in such a mass-produced, buy-it-now society where everything is either a click or a short drive away. Why should people continue to make things by hand?

“Because they are unique, you will not find two items the same. Handmade things are made with love and there are a lot of people who still appreciate the time and dedication it takes to make a “simple” doll or a “simple” painting like some other people think of it. A crafter puts all their love into making their items.”

Best advice you have ever received? “Be yourself.”

How hard do you push yourself?

“Very hard. My creations have to be perfect before they leave my room. I hate seeing a thread out of place or a creased end.”

What’s the side of you that the public never sees?

“My messy work room. It’s chaos in there but I know where everything is. My son-in-law who is a “cleanaholic” just can’t be in it. He actually helps me tidy it up once in a while, but I keep messing it up again!”

What is your guilty pleasure?

“My grandson Raiden. He is 1 year and 3 months old and he has changed my life.”

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

“Having my son-in-law at home every day to tidy up my work room. No just kidding. Having a big house where I could have all my family over every day and be able to enjoy time with them, especially with my grandson.”

What is your greatest fear? “Losing my family.”

Which living person do you most admire?

“My mum. She is the strongest and most loving person I have ever met.”

Which talent would you most like to have?

“Don’t know really. In the crafting area I more or less defend myself. I know how to knit, sew, draw, crotchet, bake, basically anything that can be made with your hands, but if I have to say something it would be to be able to write a book. I have always wanted to do something like that but I am useless in that area.”

What do you consider is your greatest achievement?

“My children and my marriage. I remember everybody saying that my marriage would not last as I got married when I was just 14 years old as I was pregnant with my first child, Paula. Well it will be 35 years this year and still going strong. I then had Denis when I was 16.”

What do you most value in your friends? “Sincerity.”

What is the most precious gift you have given to someone? “My children to my husband.”

What is your personal quote or motto that you live by?

“Live and let live. That’s what my parents always told me and it has gone well up to now.”

If you could go back and start your life over again, what one thing would you do differently? “Nothing.”

Final words to the B Mag readers.

“Having had a successful Christmas with Eli’s Dreams, I wish that this year I get to make more nice things for everyone that appreciates handmade crafts together with my lovely crafty friends from the Rock Crafters Group. Look out for our Valentines collection and our coming fairs… lots of lovely ideas for everyone’s pockets. You can find us on Facebook Eli’s Dreams (54022391) and Rock Crafters Events.”

Going Grey… What to do ? Our hair changes over time, and whether you’re blonde, brunette or ginger, your hair will fade to grey and even turn to white eventually. It’s totally natural, but going grey can be a big worry. Here’s our guide to dealing with it. A natural process

Ageing is inevitable, though the moment when you discover the first grey and white hairs is never a pleasant one! Some people start getting white hairs very early, while others stay grey-free into old age. Whatever happens, accept it and deal with it if you want to.

Understanding the issue

The appearance of white hair is caused by a decrease in the production of melanin. Here’s the science: melanocyes, which are responsible for the colour of hair and skin, make melanin, which is a dark pigment. The dark pigment is transferred to keratinocytes, the cells which produce hair, located in the hair bulb. If these cells receive a lot of dark pigment during hair production then hair is dark; otherwise it is blonde. Hair becomes white over time because melanocytes run low over time and are replaced with air bubbles in the hair bulbs! Did you know? Technically speaking, grey hair does not exist. The ‘salt and pepper’ effect is the mix between coloured hair and white hair, but hair is either coloured or not.

When do most women go grey?

The average age when women first discover white hair is 34. It may come earlier if the melanocytes and the cells that produce hair no longer work together properly. There are certain rare cases where this can be reversible (after chronic renal failure or chemotherapy). Hormones and genetics play a large part in abnormal and very early white hair.

To dye or not to dye?

You can choose to live with your grey hair whatever your age and play with sophisticated styles. This option is easy to maintain. Before you start dyeing your hair, remember that white roots need constant care! If you decide to stay natural, you can liven up your appearance with fun accessories such as coloured headbands, hats and glasses.

Dyeing grey & white hair Blondes and redheads You’re lucky because the appearance of white hair on blondes and redheads is subtler than it is on brunettes, and this buys you time to decide what to do! For a natural camouflage effect, streaks are recommended for blondes. These will drown out the white and save you having to get your roots done every month. If you have 20-30% white hair then homedyeing kits will do the trick, but if you have more then it’s best to seek your hairdresser’s advice. Brunettes Grey and white hair soon shows up on dark hair. Dyeing can hide it well, but bear in mind you’ll need to re-do your roots regularly. NB - Repetitive dyeing damages your scalp. If you dye your hair at home, it’s better to use natural plant-based products that don’t contain ammonia.

Ways to Mend a Broken Heart

Today’s news says that the average woman suffers heartbreak twice before meeting the right man. We’re likely to kiss 15 frogs, have four disastrous dates and two serious long-term relationships before settling down and meeting our ‘forever’ prince. With this in mind, we have come up with our definitive list of heartbreak remedies, so if we unexpectedly find ourselves heading towards dumpsville, we’re ready to deal (that’s without reaching for our fifteenth tub of Ben & Jerry’s...) Ladies, bookmark this page... 1. Avoid alcohol

When you first break up with somebody, you’ll feel shocked and probably in disbelief. The worst thing you can do is try and drown your emotions in alcohol and go mad on a big nights out – you’ll only end up sobbing to strangers or indulging on the dreaded drunk calling.

2. Don’t contact him

You’ll go round in circles and get hurt. Instead, delete his number and when you get that urge to call him, phone a friend instead. BMAG 38

3. Indulge in sad songs and films

As Jennifer Aniston said after her divorce from Brad Pitt, “When you try to avoid pain, it creates greater pain.” So remember to let those feelings out in a safe way (rather than say, sleeping with somebody else immediately – which will probably make you feel worse).

4. Write him a letter… BUT DON’T SEND IT THOUGH

After a week of wallowing, it’s time to address those emotions. Write him a letter explaining how hurt you are. Relive all the good and bad memories. Sign it, and then burn it. It will feel hugely cathartic and you’ll feel like a weight has been lifted.

5. Give yourself some distractions

Create a playlist full of upbeat, positive songs and start watching a new box set. Nothing too emotional or draining, but totally engrossing.

6. Say YES to all social events

Just being out and about is healthy. Book time in advance with your friends to avoid feeling neglected and lonely in the upcoming weeks.

7. Bin the bedding

Who wants reminding of them every time you wake up? Treat yourself to some new bed linen or you’ll always picture that duvet cover with a hairy foot sticking out from under it. Reclaim your boudoir!

8. Un-friend him now

If you’re still friends on Facebook or Twitter, get rid – his entire life is played out before you in glorious Technicolour. Stop torturing yourself and unfollow/un-friend him today. Seeing pictures of him will act as a misery trigger, not to mention the hours you’ll waste trying to work out who those new female ‘friends’ are. No exceptions.

9. Don’t rule out a rebound fling

Hooray. He doesn’t have to be Mr Perfect either – they can build confidence and remind you that you’re a sexual creature. But relax – you’re dating, not recruiting a husband – don’t let it stress you out.

10. Seek out the positive

Although it’s hard to see it initially, there will be some serious pros to the split, trust us. Think of Nicole Kidman – who, when asked what you was looking forward to most about single life after splitting with Tom Cruise, replied, ‘Wearing high heels again’. What will you be gaining? Remind yourself.

The

Gluten

Free Diet Banishing gluten is the celeb slimming tip du jour, with stars including Miley Cyrus, Gwyneth Paltrow and Victoria Beckham allegedly following a gluten free (GF) diet plan in order to lose weight.

Note: Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition caused by an intolerance to gluten - but if you think you may have it, DON’T go gluten free until your doctor tells you to, as this will hinder diagnosis of the disease.

Normally, gluten-free eating is associated with people who have coeliac disease - but could a GF lifestyle help you to slim down too?

How it works

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley, so going gluten-free means cutting out foods that contain these grains.

Results

That means no bread, pasta, cereals, or, sadly cakes and biscuits...

Fans of the diet as a weight loss regime say it results in thinner thighs, a flatter belly, and increased energy. But as going gluten-free is usually a medical treatment, not a slimming plan, it’s impossible to say how much weight you could lose - or if you’ll lose any at all.

There’s no research to prove that a GF diet can be used for anything other than treating coeliac disease, but avoiding gluten may result in weight loss, as a lot of foods containing it are high in carbs and sugar - and in calories.

Essentially, the more calories you cut out, the quicker you’ll lose weight, and avoiding gluten-heavy products may help you to lower your calorie intake.

But gluten-free foods aren’t necessarily slimming. There are GF varieties of foods now available, so the reduction in carbohydrate foods, which may result on a GF, diet and may cause weight loss is not a foolproof way to lose weight.

Plus points

Replacing regular sugary snacks with gluten-free sugary snacks, for instance, won’t do you much good!

Downsides

A typical day

You can still eat fresh, balanced meals and shouldn’t get hungry. It’s not a two-week fad diet; it’s a change you can stick to.

Avoiding gluten can be limiting, especially when you go out or travel abroad. And remember: if you suspect you have coeliac disease, don’t cut gluten from your diet until your doctor agrees to it.

Going completely gluten-free is more complicated than you might think. It’s easy to steer clear of the obvious - bread, cakes, cereal - but gluten can also be found in fish fingers, sausages, gravies, even soy sauce! To avoid gluten altogether, you have to check labels religiously.

Celebrity fans

So what can you eat? Meat, fish, eggs, cheese, milk, fruit, vegetables, rice, nuts, potatoes... There’s still a lot to choose from, and notice that most of these foods are naturally healthy. You can also look for special ‘Free From’ foods in the supermarket, or check out directories of gluten-free products online.

Miley Cyrus recently posted on Twitter that her weight loss was due to going gluten-free. Victoria Beckham, Gwyneth Paltrow and Rachel Weisz have also been linked to GF diets.

Engagement Rings What your Shape says about You

Kate Middleton wears a classic oval-shaped ring, Kim Kardashian has a romantic cushion-cut one while Victoria Beckham dons an extravagant marquise-cut diamond. Engagement rings are a personal choice and even if brides don’t realise it, the ring on their finger speaks volumes about their personality, depending on how its cut.

Round Cut

Marquise Cut

Princess Cut

You’re the sort of bride who likes classic, timeless things and doesn’t dress over the top. You always look smart, chic and classy without spending hours in front of the mirror. In short, the type of women men don’t worry about introducing to their parents.

You’re the bride who loves being the centre of attention. The marquise cut will help you stand out from the crowd given its unique shape, which can also be characterised as a boatshaped brilliant stone.

Created in the swinging sixties, the princess cut was the on-trend ring back in the day. The shape has seen a revival in recent years, and is perfect for the stylish bride who always has her finger on the fashion pulse.

Emerald Cut

Asscher Cut

Heart Cut

Worn by stars like Elizabeth Taylor and Grace Kelly, the emerald cut ring reflects the glamour of a Hollywood screen goddess. You’re the type of bride who has class, charm and effortlessly manages to be the centre of attention. Created in the art deco period, the emerald boasts long, glamorous lines so suits women with long fingers.

For the vintage bride, the asscher cut is key. Nearly identical to the emerald cut, this shape is square and evokes the same dramatic, 1920s art deco feel. If you’re the type of bride that loves hunting around vintage shops and has a wardrobe full of vintage shoes to match, the asscher is for you.

Similar to the cushion-cut bride, the heartshaped bride is emotional, thoughtful and will see the delicately shaped ring as a very obvious symbol of love. The heart is the ultimate symbol of romance and sentimentality especially when presented in an engagement ring.

Cushion Cut

Pear Cut

Oval Cut

You’re the romantic bride who loves men in breeches, cries at soppy films and wants to be swept off your feet by your dashing groom. The cushion cut, also known as the pillow cut, harks back to an era of romance and elegance and over a century ago, used to the most popular shape around, adding a touch of vintage to the ring. The cushion looks like a rectangle with rounded corners and has larger facets to increase its brilliance. If you can, go for three diamonds in a cushion cut for a real wow factor.

Resembling a teardrop, this hybrid cut combines the features of the oval and marquise. If you love the brilliance and fire of the round cut diamond, but would like a unique shape to match your own your style and sensibilities, the pear is renowned as one of the more interesting fancy diamond cuts. The pear is especially flattering to a hand with small to average-length fingers.

The oval cut is similar to the round one, and perfectly symmetrical in design. Traditionally popular among women with small hands or shorter fingers, its elongated shape gives a flattering illusion of length.

Your

Home & Bedroom

this

Valentine’s Day

Create that special

mood with thoughtful touches to your decor . As with love, good design makes life better and current trendsetters are swooning over romance. Whether in fashion, pop-culture or home decor, a little lust is making its way into our thoughts, one steamy suggestion after another. If you want to bring romance into your home and you want to spice up your bedroom but don’t know where to begin, read on. We’ve come up with some ideas that will set the mood and indulge all of the senses. BUT FIRST, THE BASICS Classic icons, like hearts, are musts. They contribute to the romance of it all.

AND THE COLOUR OF CHOICE? That should be obvious… Make a bold colour statement. Red accents add a dramatic effect that will be sure to spark some passion. Red is an emotionally intense colour. Think red flowers, pillows or candles. Keeping it simple? Swap the bulb in your lamp for a red one or fill some martini glasses with cinnamon hearts and place them around the room.

SWEET SCENTS The power of scent should never be underestimated. Aromatherapy is another sure-fire way to set the mood. Linen sprays add the perfect touch - whether flowery or musky. Scented candles or incense also suggest a romantic vibe. Vanilla, sandalwood and cinnamon are all warm, earthy fragrances that will help create just the right ambiance. So will some new textures.

FLOWER POWER An obvious choice, but nothing says love more than the addition of flowers in your home decor. The trick is to make the arrangement special. A single perfect rose poised in a blood-red vase would be the jewel in any room.

SOFT TO THE TOUCH Super-soft bedding for the bedroom is undeniably romantic. Classic fabrics like satin and velvet will add to a room’s atmosphere. Lavish fabrics will create a sensuous feel in your boudoir. So switch the bed linens or blankets you normally use with ones that have a silkier texture. Not in your budget range? Small cushions made out of something tactile will create a sense of luxury, and if they’re heart-shaped, even better. Of course, a handful of rose petals couldn’t hurt. Neither will some mood music. BMAG 50

LOVELY LACE Antique lace tablecloths, bathroom hand towels or dining table place mats are ultra-feminine accessories that will add that old-world charm to your current design.

LOUNGING AROUND Instead of the traditional love seat, why not splurge on a sumptuous chaise lounge perfect for a cosy couple. Instant sex appeal to today’s sitting room!

CURTAIN CALL Add simple linen curtains on the doorways that transition between the rooms in your home (kitchen-to-dining room, dining room-to-living room, etc) to soften the look of your urban oasis.

Lovescopes

FEBRUARY 2014

With the arrival of the year 2014 last month, the stars have already predicted how the year is going to chart out. For lovers it is a year of a lot of surprises and a mixed bag of emotions, each zodiac sign being affected by the planets in retrograde in a different manner. To help you assess what the year is going to be like we have for you Love Horoscopes 2014 that will tell you in brief what to expect out of love in the year 2014.

Aquarius

For the Aquarians the year spells one of excitements and highs, but which comes at a dear cost. You will be faced with a dilemma that needs resolution, some of you might even find yourself riding two boats of love at some point of time, but as the warning and saying goes you must decide on time else the outcome of such liaisons can turn out to be quite dangerous. The sun signs that you will find most compatibility with are fellow Aquarians, the Leos as well as the Scorpions.

Aries

For the Arians the year comes with a bunch of surprises and a fun ride, really. You will see heights of passion that may also cause some anxiety. So you have to be prepared for the extremes of everything this year. Ideal love matches for you would be Pisceans, Cancerians and Librans, so go ahead and have fun.

Gemini

For the Geminis, the year will see a lot of romantic vacations with their beloved, especially around mid-year. So gear up for rather happy times that are lined-up ahead for you. The Geminis will find it particularly easy to woo and get along with people belonging to the zodiac signs Libra, Cancer and Scorpio, so keep the sunny disposition going.

Leo

For the Leos this year is one with comes a few concerns. Your health may not be really in its prime this year, which will also end up hindering your romantic prospects. The advice would be to take care of your health to be able to enjoy love to its fullest. You’re most likely to find the best compatibility with Cancerians, Virgos and Capricorns this year.

Libra

The year 2014 comes with a lesson in patience for the Librans for you really need to think things out and hence decide when you would really want to propose to the one whom you have loved for so long. So this year is going to be one when you need to figure out the right time and then grab it. The year will most likely see you settling down with someone who belongs to the zodiac signs of either Gemini, Pisces or Capricorn.

Sagittarius

The year 2014 sees the Sagittarians busy with work and all the bigger plans of life, so the year might not be the best year for love. Hence there is a piece of advice, to not get into too serious a relationship, and in case you already are then do make sure that you give your beloved enough time. The year will see you finding romance in the arms of Cancerians, Capricorns and Geminis.

Pisces

For the Pisceans this year is not the best in terms of love, for there are some problems plaguing them that shall make it slightly difficult to focus on love. However do not fret for you shall be able to prevail through most odds and for those of you who already have a loved one, your lover will be your strength. The zodiac signs that you need to surround yourself with in this time of turmoil should be Aries, Taurus and Sagittarius, for only these can give you true love.

Quick tips for keeping your crush interested in you! How to attract someone, to whom you are already attracted? Like it’s not tough enough to act normal, not behave silly when you’re crush passes by. Zodiac signs can leave a lasting impact on one’s personality. So if you love someone truly, Zodiac signs can help you to know what kind of person he/she is. The key is to find out how to attract that person, based on his/her tastes. You can make love happen to you. So here is a quick reference guide for you to know what approach to take for a person belonging to a specific zodiac sign. So, for example if you have fallen for a Libra female or if you have fallen for a Gemini Male, doesn’t matter these are some quick takeaways for you to get things going.

Taurus

The year for the Taureans is one that begins on a very happy note; do not be surprised if you get to finally date that special someone whom you have been admiring for quite a while. If you want to have a lasting relationship this year then the best signs that are suited for you would be Scorpios, Pisceans and Virgos, as these signs may give you a compatibility stimulus like no other.

Cancer

For all the Cancerians who are thinking of taking that leap of faith and taking the plunge, this is the year for you. We know it might be a bit scary but in terms of love, always listen to your heart and not your mind. This year will see the most ideal partners for you belong to the zodiac signs of Sagittarius, Leos and Gemini, so go ahead and take that step forward and allow love to fill your life.

Virgo

The year starts with a bitter pill to swallow for the Virgos as a marriage proposal or the love offered to someone whom they have loved for a really long time. Do not fret, for you will manage to prevail ahead and find your own happy ending in the end. The signs that you will find most compatibility with are Taurus, Aries and Libra, so go ahead and have your happy ending, love will surely follow in the latter half of the year.

Scorpio

The year comes with a message to take it easy for the Scorpios. Though the zodiac is known for its amorous ways the year tells of reasons to lessen it, as mid-year might see your love life suffering due to what can only be called flirting over the top. So hold on to your horses and not get carried away on the love chariot. The year will also see you getting along fabulously with fellow Scorpios, Cancerians and Taureans, so have a wonderful time with the company that they will offer you.

Capricorn

For the Capricorns the year talks about falling in love with open eyes and also an open heart. You might think that you know people really well but sometimes they manage to surprise you by not turning out to be who you thought they were. So do not trust too much without being careful, else you might face a setback.
