On the run: One of Editor in Chief Michael Gossie’s favorite Arizona activities is competing in the annual P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon and Half Marathon.

Arizona packs adventures for everyone, every day Ten years after moving to Arizona from upstate New York, people still ask me what I like the most about living in the Grand Canyon state. My answer is always the same: “I haven’t had to shovel snow once since I moved here.” But if I lived a couple hours north, the yearly snowfall would give my home turf in upstate New York a run for its money. That is what makes Arizona great: Where else can you get a sunburn in Scottsdale and ski at Snowbowl on the same day? Arizona offers something for everyone, every day. From hiking and biking to shopping and spas, Arizona provides the experiences that create memories that last a lifetime. That’s what Experience AZ is all about. We want to guide you to the greatest adventures and experiences to make your visit to Arizona one that you will never forget. Based on votes from our readers, we have listed the five best dining experiences, tours, attractions, and places to visit in a variety of categories. Want to know my personal fab five Arizona adventures? Hiking to the waterfalls of Havasupai. Running the P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon. Relaxing at Briar Patch in Sedona. Taking my family to ZooLights at the Phoenix Zoo. And when friends visit, I always take them to Los Dos Molinos. So get ready for the adventure of a lifetime. And use Experience AZ to guide you toward a visit that will make you want to come back time after time to keep crossing the must-see hot spots off your Top 5 lists. And when you find a favorite, be sure to vote for it by visiting ExperienceAZonline.com so others can share your amazing memories.

An experience worth finding! It’s the year of wilderness, a time to embrace The primeval places where nature prevails. You can use them, enjoy them, just don’t leave a trace In the forests, rivers, deserts and canyons with trails. Aravaipa Canyon is a bucket-list jewel. The limit on visitors is 50 per day. So plan your trip early and follow the rule There’s a permit that’s required and money to pay. Baboquivari is remote and requires training and skills; It takes more than a hike to get to the peak. But the landscape is dramatic, with plenty of thrills, And it offers the chance to use climbing technique. The Eagletail Mountains are gems worth a visit. They’re close to I-10, a well-traveled route, So drive for a ways and see views that are exquisite. Just remember the saying ‘pack it in / pack it out.’ The Sierra Estrella is rugged and steep. It’s close to the city, but the roads are rough. Quartz Peak Trail is a memory to keep. Visit often because once isn’t enough. Hell’s Canyon Wilderness is in the Hieroglyphics The name of mountains may ring a bit strange, But it’s close to Lake Pleasant and not far from Phoenix. It’s a place where the ancients found reason to interchange. We hope you’ll forgive this bit of bad rhyming. A poem is no match for a wilderness time. It can’t beat the hunting, and camping and climbing. Wild lands and nature are far more than words sublime.

The Wilderness Act was signed on September 3, 1964. The Bureau of Land Management and other agencies will be recognizing that anniversary with educational and awareness events throughout the year. We invite you to take part in those activities and to visit our wilderness areas. Arizona has about 90 designated wilderness areas, 49 of which are managed by the BLM. www.blm.gov/az/st/en/prog/blm_special_areas/wildareas.html.

FLAGSTAFF Snow-capped peaks and pine trees as far as the eye can see might not be the first things that come to mind when picturing an Arizona landscape, but a visit to Flagstaff, Arizona’s premier mountain town, provides those amazing forest views. Wintertime adventures

Flagstaff is a wonderful place to visit in the winter to experience the magic of snow and holiday activities. Many people don’t realize that Flagstaff is one of the snowiest cities in the United States, receiving just more than 108 inches of snow each winter season. But don’t let that stop you from visiting this active town, as most of that snow falls then the skies open up for the sun to shine so you can enjoy all that the mountains of northern Arizona have to offer. With 2,300 feet of vertical drop, Arizona Snowbowl is the premier ski area of the state with terrain that anyone would enjoy. Skiers and snowboarders of all ages can take a ride down the mountain from Thanksgiving weekend through March. Arizona Snowbowl offers equipment rentals and lessons for all skill levels. If you prefer to stay on more level ground, the Flagstaff Nordic Center may be your speed. The Center offers 40km of groomed cross-country ski trails, along with snowshoe trails and new this year, snow biking trails. Yes, you can bike in the snow with the Nordic Centers new fleet of Pugsley bikes. They also offer a full line of equipment rental and gear. Those planning to sled and play in the snow should visit a designated snow play area. Suggested locations include: Wing Mountain Snow Play Area (snowplayaz.com), Crowley Pit Winter Parking Area, Peak View Winter Parking Area, or Fort Tuthill County Park. A Winter Recreation Map is available at www.flagstaffarizona.org and can be downloaded and used to find the best route to ski and snow play areas. There is also a new smartphone app that has Flagstaff winter information which can be downloaded at FlagSnowPlay.com.

High Country Holidays

As you can imagine, with snow on the ground and lights stringing the trees, Flagstaff has a festival holiday atmosphere. Make sure to stop in the Historic Downtown and Southside areas to browse the eclectic mix of locally owned stores and art galleries. If shopping isn’t your hobby but dining or sipping a local brew is, you will find plenty of options for local pubs and restaurants. On December 14th the Northern Lights Holiday Parade will travel through this same area with floats lit by millions of lights.

Fine Craft Sale & Artist Marketplace December 7-8, 2013 Coconino Center for the Arts

Flagstaff is also home to the North Pole Experience, a one-of-a-kind, interactive Christmas adventure that brings Santa’s workshop to life. Guests travel to Santa’s workshop on a special Christmas trolley that allows access to Santa’s magical headquarters through the local portal. Once families arrive at the workshop, children tour Santa’s Toy Hall of Fame, meet Alibaster Snowflake, and are invited to work side-by-side with the elves building toys and enjoy family time with Santa.

STAY

Flagstaff is home to more than 4,500 hotel rooms and 200+ restaurants. The city is the perfect hub to explore all of northern Arizona, located only 81 miles from the Grand Canyon. Winter months in Flagstaff are cold with temperatures warming up during the day. Visitors should be well prepared and dress warmly. Make layering a key factor and remember that snowfall is always possible. Bring warm pants, short and long sleeve shirts, sweatshirt or sweater, winter coat, hats, gloves, boots and heavy socks. In addition, the sun may cause sunburn and strain your eyes. To feel your best, dress warmly in layers, drink plenty of water, apply sunscreen and wear sunglasses outdoors.
