covering the game of life

from the publisher Hello readers! Welcome to another issue of Arizona Sports & Lifestyle Magazine (AZSAL). We are more than halfway through another exciting football season. The Arizona Cardinals continued where they left off last year, playing great ball! With a healthy Carson Palmer at quarterback, the team may finally be playing up to its full potential under head coach Bruce Arians. Last year, injuries hobbled the Cardinals throughout the year, yet they still finished 11-5 before falling to Carolina in the Wild Card round. Who can forget the amazing job that Arians did without Palmer, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in midNovember, with the team at 9-1. Quarterbacks Drew Stanton and Ryan Lindley miraculously held the team together. To keep Palmer safe in the pocket, so he can dish the football to Fitzy and company, the Cardinals will rely on left tackle Jared Veldheer to keep hard-charging defensive linemen from harming the back side of the team’s golden-armed gunslinger. AZSAL is proud to spotlight No. 68, one of the best left tackles in the NFL and one of the most important components of the Cardinals high-powered offense. Aptly nicknamed “The Hulk,” Veldheer has a vital job this season, keeping Palmer from hitting the dirt. If Palmer and his teammates can stay healthy and continue playing at this high level, the Cardinals can make some noise in the postseason. Another trip to the Super Bowl could be in the cards … no pun intended. Veldheer shared with AZSAL his offseason routine, his football background, the bond with his close-knit family and his passion for tasty home-brewed craft beer. At 6-feet-8 and 320 pounds, Veldheer is a beast on the field, but one of the truly great guys off the field. Just the type of guy you’d want to grab a beer with actually. Check out the feature on one of the best-kept secrets in the Valley: We-Ko-Pa Resort & Conference Center at Fort McDowell, which provides the perfect opportunity to get away and play. This issue also contains ASU football, good eats, hot wheels, lots of gear and much more. We hope you enjoy the issue. Now keep reading ...

FAVORITE LUNCH STOP:

JIMMY & JOE’S PIZZERIA

SINCE 2006, JIMMY & JOE’S PIZZERIA has been satisfying residents of Chandler and Mesa with some of the best pizza in the Valley, and now their neighbors in Ahwatukee can rejoice with the recent opening of the third Jimmy & Joe’s restaurant. Jimmy & Joe’s Pizzeria has won numerous “Best of” awards from foodies including Phoenix New Times, AZ Central, East Valley Tribune and even AZSAL, in the magazine’s inaugural Pizza Roundup in the Jan./Feb. 2012 issue (with KUPD’s John Holmberg on the cover). Jimmy & Joe’s cooks up 12-inch, 14-inch, 16-inch and 24inch pies with your choice of 30 toppings. Or you can choose one of their signature combos like the Chicago (meatball, sausage, onions and Kelsey D’s giardiniera), the Carnivore (pepperoni, salami, meatball, sausage and ham) or even a Healthy Choice (cheese-less, artichoke hearts, mushroom, zucchini, tomato and garlic) for vegans. There’s even a gluten-free option. We started our lunch with their signature pie, the Company Combo. This scrumptious pizza is loaded with pepperoni, tomato, green pepper, mushroom, onion and sausage. The toppings perfectly complement each other and one slice is not enough. Amen! Patrons who stop by Jimmy & Joe’s for lunch, however, are there for the aptly-named Serious Slice, a generous portion cut from their 24-inch pizzas … a massive slice that makes other pizzeria’s slices look like appetizers. The pizza crust has just the right amount of crispness on the outside and chewiness on the inside. The toppings are fresh and high-quality, for example J&J uses fresh mushroom slices, not canned. Most J&J newbies will make the mistake of ordering two slices before seeing their colossal-ness. A Serious Slice starts at $5.99 and includes a drink. If you’re bringing a hearty appetite, order combo #2: a serious slice, six wings and a fountain drink for $8.99. J&J also prepares Serious Sandwiches served on a 10” toasted loaf with a drink for only $7.95. Hallelujah! Our favorite sandwich was the Joe (of course, it has to be!) — a tasty combination of chicken, jack cheese, cheddar cheese and Joe’s sauce (a zesty blend of Italian dressing and hot wing sauce). We also thoroughly enjoyed the classic Italian with generous portions of mortadella, capicola, salami, Kelsey D’s giardiniera, lettuce, provolone and Italian dressing. Can I get a “yum yum”?

Rounding out the menu are calzones, fresh salads and wings (in baskets of 6, 12, 18, 24 and 36). Many pizzerias offer wings as an afterthought to accompany their pizza, but J&J’s wings were so good, we gave each other saucy high-fives at the table. The wings were big and juicy, served with Joe’s sauce, which added just the right amount of kick. Save room for the legendary eegee’s frozen drink in piña colada, strawberry and lemon flavors. An eegee’s is a cup of ice cold frozen fruit perfection packed with flavor and chunks of real fruit. It’s the perfect exclamation point to a delicious lunch. Now, with three East Valley locations, Jimmy & Joe’s Pizzeria should be a part of your lunch rotation. Enjoy! LOCATIONS: • Ahwatukee: 4747 E. Elliot Rd. START MOVING TOWARD GOOD HEALTH

FLAGSTAFF NAMED ONE OF THE BEST PLACES TO LIVE

MANY OF US PICTURE A HEALTHY PERSON as an organic-cotton wearing, garden growing, smoothie slurping, exercise addict. One who never touches sugar, caffeine or alcohol, and whips up three healthy balanced meals every day, sleeps 9 hours a night, and fits in a deep breathing routine each morning under a pagoda. But here’s the spoiler: this person doesn’t exist. This person makes us feel like we have to do everything right. But in reality, we just have to do something. Anything! Because each small step we take toward better health is a step away from disease and lethargy. This is where to start. Downsize. We’re not talking about moving into a condo, but simplifying, streamlining and being selective. Make your life more livable. The number one excuse for lack of activity is TIME. So make some tough choices and reclaim some precious self-care minutes. Your health is more important than Wing Night, no matter what your friends might tell you. Get new friends. Didn’t see that coming, did ya? There’s strong scientific evidence to support the ‘ol “you tend to become like the seven closest people in your life.” Don’t surround yourself with negative, closed-minded, low-energy people; find a few health nuts to hang with. Educate yourself. The “health” industry loves to find little connections between their product and the promise of quick, easy disease prevention. Demand science, be skeptical and save your hard earned money from the diet industry black hole. Don’t fall for shortcuts. Diets work. They all restrict something, and therefore reduce your overall calorie consumption. Eat less … lose weight. It’s physics, not a miracle. But when dieters inevitably fall back into their normal eating pattern, their body will gain back weight plus a little more “just in case” they decide to deprive it again. Short-term diets, cleansing and even extreme exercise may seem like the quickest way to your goal, but in reality they are expensive, ineffective and downright dangerous. The ONLY thing that works, is a daily, weekly and yearly commitment to moving your body, eating nutritious food and going easy on the junk. Don’t quit starting. Whether eating more vegetables, hiking the hills, drinking more water or lifting weights, if you start something and quit — then just START AGAIN. There will never be a perfect time to take charge of your health; life is too complicated. So get out there and start again. As with most ventures, the starting is often the hardest. Rolling out of bed and lacing up your running shoes seems like an Everest-worthy effort compared to the easy glide of a 30 minute run, just as walking into a fitness center and initially meeting with a trainer feels much scarier than completing an actual workout! But if you’re willing to keep striving for those small successes — you’ll eventually get hooked and embrace a healthy lifestyle. And even if you don’t … you can always start again.

WHAT MAKES A GREAT TOWN IN AMERICA? According to Outside Magazine, it’s the kind of place with top-notch restaurants, vibrant farmers’ markets, friendly neighborhoods and easy access to hiking and biking trails. In short, the perfect jumping-off point for adventure. Each year, Outside hosts its Best Towns competition to find the top spots in the country to work, run, eat, sail, paddle, drink, ride and climb. In 2015, Flagstaff finished seventh on the list. “Flanked by 12,000-foot mountains and the largest contiguous ponderosa pine forest in the world, Flagstaff is an oasis in the Arizona desert where endurance athletes love to train,” the magazine proclaims. Chattanooga (Tenn.) was named the best place to live, inching out runnerup Port Angeles (Wash.) in a close race. • Chattanooga: Like the love child of Nashville and Silicon Valley, but with more single track, Chattanooga boasts a thriving startup scene and fiber optic Internet service as well as over a hundred miles of prime mountain biking track and a bevy of Class IV-V rapids. • Port Angeles: As a gateway to the Olympic Peninsula, Port Angeles hosts a diverse mix of ecosystems: alpine environments studded with lakes, ultra-green old-growth forests threaded with whitewater rivers, and bays harboring orca and steelhead.

MAKING SURE YOUR KIDS ARE WATER SMART

• Flip and Float: Any time a child enters a body of water unexpectedly, she should know to first reach the surface then flip onto her back and float until help arrives. • Find the Side: If your child accidentally falls into a pool, he should know how to swim to the side, and either pull himself out of the water or move along the wall to the stairs where he can safely exit. • Do a Clothes Test: If you have a backyard pool, there could be a situation where your child falls into the pool fully clothed. To help your children understand how to react and judge their skill level in a situation

like this, under your supervision, have them jump into the pool with clothes on and swim to the side. • Throw, Don’t Go: When asked what they would do if a friend or sibling is struggling in the water, children should know to not enter the water. Instead, they should look for a device that can reach into the water such as a pool noodle, a foam ring or even a large stick that the struggling person can grab and hold onto while being pulled to safety. • Take a lap: If you have a backyard pool, it is a good idea to test your child at the end of the summer to make sure she can swim a full lap of the pool. This will you determine if your child can swim far enough to reach the side or a step to exit the pool, no matter where she falls in. For more water safety tips, visit the USSSA at www.usswimschools.org.

DROWNING IS ONE OF THE LEADING CAUSES OF DEATH in the United States. On average, 3,533 people die as a result of drowning each year, and most of those deaths are children under the age of four who drown in backyard swimming pools. The tragedy of these statistics is nearly all drowning deaths are preventable. Parents need to be aware of their children’s swimming capabilities, as well as their knowledge of how to be safe around water. To help parents determine if their children are knowledgeable about basic water safety skills, the US Swim School Association (USSSA) has created a basic safety guideline that parents can use to evaluate their children at the start and end of the summer pool season. USSSA also reminds parents that enrolling children in year-round swimming lessons is one of the first defenses in drowning prevention. Even if children can complete the following tasks, year-round lessons can help children maintain their swimming skills and build strength.

TIPS FOR DOWNSIZING YOUR HOME FACING THE PROSPECT OF DOWNSIZING YOUR HOME CAN BE CHALLENGING. Whether you’re scaling down for philosophic, economic, health or other personal reasons, think of this as an opportunity to launch a new life — one without the weight of unused and neglected possessions. It’s a great excuse to rid your life of clutter and focus on the things that actually make you happy, whether serving a function or simply for being beautiful. The process of downsizing will overwhelm most people, even those who embrace the process. Here are some tips to help you tackle the work ahead of you, whether you are moving yourself or helping a friend or senior parent downsize their life. Tip #1: Map It Out — If you don’t know the dimensions of your current and future homes, then find out immediately. You need a practical measurement of the difference between the two spaces. Once you have the floor plans and dimensions side by side, you can make decisions about how much space you will have for furnishings and storage. Tip #2: Set Ground Rules — Take the decisions from the first tip and turn them into rules. A specific rule could be something like “discard three books for every one you pack.” Another option is to give family members a specific

number of boxes and say that everything they want for their room has to fit in those packing boxes and nothing more. Tip #3: Find Alternate Ways to Discard — Tossing unwanted items in the trash may be the simplest method to de-clutter, but there are more compassionate and profitable ways to dispose of them, including donating to a local charity, holding a garage sale or gifting to friends and families who might find a need for an item. Tip #4: Replace Before You Move — Do you need to downsize your furnishings to fit the smaller scale of your new home? If so, do it now … before you move. The two mistakes people make when downsizing is to move with their over-sized stuff or to move without any furniture at all. Tip #5: Be Decisive — As you make the countless choices associated with downsizing, you need to be confident and absolute. Any choice should be “yes” or “no” — remove “maybe” from your vocabulary. — Courtesy of Storage West (www.storagewest.com)

CAN TOMATOES SAVE YOUR SKIN? OXIDATIVE STRESS IS THE CAUSE OF ALL AGING, according to the free radical theory, and your skin is not immune to the ravages of oxidation. We do our best to avoid processed food, hydrate as much as possible, exercise in moderation and avoid toxins in our diet and environment, yet none of us can avoid the ultraviolet free radical damage from above. So how do you protect and nourish your skin after a summer baking in the Phoenix sun? “Eat tomatoes,” says Dr. Mark Menolascino, MD. Dr. Menolascino states tomatoes contain multiple antioxidants for skin protection, such as quercetin, vitamin C, vitamin E, and most importantly, the carotenoids lycopene, alpha and beta carotene. The antioxidants protect

FALL 2015

s

12 AZSPORTS&LIFESTYLE

humans from free radical damage internally and externally. According to Dr. Menolascino: • Lycopene is the most important carotenoid in this class, acting like a super antioxidant for skin. • Lycopene content in tomatoes is very high, so tomatoes are a skin nourishing antioxidant all in one natural package. • Lycopene has been shown to protect the skin against the harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun. • Lycopene can stimulate the production of healthy collagen in skin and protect from oxidative damage. Studies have shown with higher lycopene content in the skin, humans can tolerate more of the sun’s ultraviolet radiation. Oxidative damage shows on the inside and the outside and your skin quality can be a marker of internal turmoil or bliss. Sunscreen is always a good idea and by providing skin protection from the inside out, we may end up with healthier skin texture and tone. Think of eating tomatoes or taking high quality lycopene supplements as having sunscreen naturally from within.

Arizona Cardinals’

INCREDIBLE

HULK

Left tackle Jared Veldheer is a GENTLE GIANT off the field, but a defensive lineman’s WORST NIGHTMARE on the gridiron By James Edward Orr PHOTOS BY GENE LOWER

THE CASUAL FOOTBALL FAN MAY BE UNFAMILIAR WITH THE NAME JARED VELDHEER. Diehards who cheer on the Arizona Cardinals, however, know all about Veldheer, signed away from the Oakland Raiders as a free agent after the 2013 season. He is one of the most important pieces of the Arizona Cardinals’ recent success … protecting quarterback Carson Palmer’s blindside. Manning the left tackle position, Veldheer is the anchor of the Cardinals’ offensive line, a group often called the “Big Uglies” because of their dirty work in the trenches. They are the engine that drives the offense, and Veldheer is proving to be the perfect locomotive in Arizona. The Cardinals’ 2014-15 team MVP is hard to miss at 6 feet 8 inches, 320 pounds. Sheer size coupled with an intense workout regimen has helped Veldheer earn the nickname “The Hulk.” Off the field, however, he is regarded as nothing short of a gentle giant. Arizona Sports & Lifestyle (AZSAL) sat down with Jared Veldheer to discuss who he really is, including his passions and hobbies off the field, family life and his aspirations for this season and the future. AZSAL: When you were younger, what inspired you most and at what point did you realize that you wanted to make a living cracking skulls? JV: I actually grew up with a love for basketball, as my brother and father both played college basketball. I tried out for football because I was so big but didn’t really stand out until I got to college. My coaches really inspired me and brought the potential I had out of me with strength and conditioning programs. AZSAL: You are from Grand Rapids, Michigan. What were your experiences while attending Forest Hills Northern High School before moving on to Hillsdale College?

JV: My freshman year of high school, I wasn’t even a starter. I played center the next year in JV, and then left tackle and center on varsity. My senior year I played tight end until our center got hurt. But all told for varsity, I only played 13 or 14 games, so there wasn’t a whole lot of high level experience going into college. AZSAL: With an incredible start to the season, can you guys feel that energy and excitement in the Valley surrounding this team and what this team can accomplish? JV: Absolutely! You can’t go anywhere in the Valley without seeing the tremendous support the Cardinal fans have for the team. That’s great to see, and we feed off that; it’s a big part of the game. AZSAL: How is the chemistry with you and the other guys on the starting offensive line? JV: All of us have to continue to prove ourselves to each other, the team and the organization. Our guys take great pride in doing that and have fun as well. AZSAL: As a protector of quarterback Carson Palmer’s blind side, how is your relationship with him? JV: Well it’s certainly great to have him back, and indeed, protecting Carson and keeping him clean and safe back in that pocket is a big responsibility. We know we have the guys that are up for it, and we know what he can do back there as a great leader of this football team. We’re just happy to have him back in the huddle with us!

Jared Veldheer_MagSeven 11/16/15 9:03 AM Page 6

AZSAL: Tell us a little bit of how you became such a big fan of home brewing and craft beers. JV: When I was playing in Oakland, I spent my offseason back in Michigan. I spent a good amount of time training, then I had a decent chunk of free time on my hands. I always enjoyed craft beers, and I was a biology major in college, so I’m used to being in a lab or that kind of environment. I decided to give home brewing a try and got hooked on it. You can make good beer right off the bat, and I really like the science behind it as well. It’s growing so fast, and it’s cool to be part of that. AZSAL: Do you still brew beer back in Michigan? JV: We’re down here now full time, so the beer staff is at the house. AZSAL: We are several weeks into the NFL season. Tell us about the season so far and what the team has in store for the rest of the season. JV: It’s a long season and your opponents are always going to bring their best stuff, so I tend to look at the now and take it game by game. It’s the National Football League, so there are no easy games despite what any team’s record is. It takes a great mind set to get through an entire season, and our guys are aware of that, which certainly has helped.

AZSAL: Besides Head Coach Bruce Areans, who are some of the other guys stepping up as leaders in the locker room? JV: We have a handful of veteran guys, so it’s tough to pick a bunch out. I know that Carson and Calais (Campbell) are both captains on and off the field, and we have others that help out the younger players to keep them in line and held accountable.

to get through an entire season, and our guys are aware of that...”

AZSAL: Your mother and father are back in Michigan and are huge supporters of you and your career. Do they come out to the games down here often? JV: They’re very supportive parents, as well as the rest of my family. They make it to as many games as possible, and we all really enjoy it. AZSAL: You and your wife have a newborn baby (congrats by the way!) and a beautiful new house. How has family life been now that you've decided to live in Arizona permanently? JV: Family life has been great. It’s a blessing being able to call this beautiful city home.

“Family life

After picking up right where they left off last year and jumping out to an early lead in the NFC West, the 2015 Arizona Cardinals are primed to make plenty of noise down the stretch as NFL teams battle for the rights to play in Super Bowl 50, held this season at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. Though this year’s team may no longer be taking the league by surprise, they are embracing the loftier expectations brought on by their recent success. The staff at AZSAL hopes that the next time we have the opportunity to sit down with Jared Veldheer, we get to ask him what craft beer he drank to celebrate the winning of the Lombardi Trophy. ▲

Let’s start with golf. Located in the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, We-Ko-Pa Golf club boasts two award-winning courses — Cholla and Saguaro — unimpeded by the hustle and bustle of the big city. You won’t find any houses lining the fairways. No traffic noise in your backswing. No construction. Just stunning scenery and the warm feeling of being one with nature. Throughout the round, players are greeted with shifting shadows cast by the interplay of sun and mountains that is seemingly sketched by the Divine. After personally experiencing this, you’ll wonder why You would ever want to be anywhere else. We-Ko-Pa Golf Club’s Cholla Course is the handiwork of architect Scott Miller. So spectacular are the views, that the sound and strategic playing value of the holes may get overlooked. Your first trip will convince you otherwise. The variety in the routing and pacing of the holes will keep all levels of golfers entertained from the opening tee shot to final tap-in. Cholla features an interesting blend of doglegs and straightaway holes, a mix of slender and ample fairways and a balance of benign and rugged green complexes. We-Ko-Pa Golf Club’s second 18, the award-winning Saguaro course, is the brainchild of the noted golf course architectural team of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. Saguaro’s design elements are as uncommon for desert golf as snow on the turf, as the course plays like the older and more traditional courses found on the East coast. Greens are close to tees, and the course follows the natural movement of the land making walking easy and enjoyable. The majority of the greens are open in front to allow for run-up shots. It is the subtle pitch and roll of the terrain on approach shots that give each hole its unique playing characteristics. We-Ko-Pa’s two courses have much in common — both are meticulously maintained, both have received high praise from golf writers and consumers alike and both offer a tranquil golf experience free of houses and roads, thus preserving the unobstructed mountain views of the Sonoran Desert.

A SUN DEVIL

By Brad Denny

D.J. FOSTER has become a hometown hero … on and off the field ARIZONA STATE HEAD COACH TODD GRAHAM doesn’t mince words when it comes to discussing the impact D.J. Foster has had on the Sun Devil football program. “The guy is on our poster, he’s on every billboard,” said Graham. “There’s not anywhere else he could have signed where he would have that kind of claim.” Over his career, Foster has indeed become the face of Sun Devil football, and it’s a position he doesn’t take for granted. “It’s great. It’s truly a blessing, and that’s all I can take it as,” Foster said. “It’s an honor to be on a poster, but I have to do what I have to do and perform and be a leader to my teammates.” A big reason for Foster’s growing impact and status in the Valley is not only that he is a great player, he is our great player. There is just that something extra, that intangible connection that comes with a player emerging from right down the street doing the things he has done. However, Foster’s destiny as the Valley’s hometown hero nearly went unfulfilled. When he was 15 years old, Foster’s sister Jennifer passed away just a week before his first varsity game. The impact on Foster was profound, but he found salvation on the football field.

it’s a special thing.”

“After my sister passed, I almost went another route, not a good route,” said Foster. “Football was really my outlet to get away and clear my head and put my energy to something positive. I don’t know where I’d be without the game of football.” Foster went on to put together one of the most accomplished careers in Arizona high school football history. He had a host of high-profile scholarship offers, yet the draw to stay home was powerful. The clincher came on the morning of his commitment announcement, when his father Darryl texted him a photo of Jennifer in an ASU shirt. “That picture obviously meant a lot to me,” Foster said. “My sister in general means the world to me. In the morning, I thought about what was really important to me. I realized that I would do anything for my family.” So Foster stayed home in the Valley and went to work for the Sun Devils. Foster has excelled as a versatile playmaker for the Arizona State offense, producing highlight reel plays and impressive statistics in equal measure. He contributed as a dual-threat weapon during his first two seasons before taking over as the team’s starting running back in 2014, where his play earned him second-team All-Pac-12 honors. That level of success on the field and his dream of playing in the NFL left him with a decision heading into 2015. Should he leave ASU early and declare for the draft? “I knew the opportunity was in front of me and that I could take it,” Foster said. “But I felt there are so many things that I still want to accomplish including getting my degree.” “For a person like D.J., who is the face of the program, there is a lot that comes along with that, both mentally and physically,” Graham said. “I think that his decision showed great maturity on his part.”

FAST FACTS

• D.J. Foster is the only active Football Bowl Subdivision student-athlete to account for more than 2,000 career rushing yards and 2,000 career receiving yards. • In 2012, Foster earned Freshman AllAmerica honors from Fox Sports NEXT. • During his senior season at Saguaro High School, set an Arizona single-season record with 60 total touchdowns in 2011. • Chosen by the Arizona Republic as the “Big School Player of the Year” in 2011, as well as the “High School Football Player of the Year” by the East Valley Tribune. • On Nov. 4, 2011 against Sunrise Mountain High School, Foster totaled 508 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns — both state single-game records.

So Foster returned to finish what he started, but with a twist: He was moving positions. In part due to team need and depth, and in part to help him prepare for the NFL, Foster has shifted to wide receiver for his senior season. He continues to be an electrifying weapon for the Sun Devils, but more importantly, he’s living up to the hometown hero standard. “D.J. has a tremendous amount of love for this university, for his hometown, and for this state,” said ASU offensive coordinator Mike Norvell. “To get a guy like that, who is such an incredible football player and person, it’s a special thing.” As his career winds down, Foster is leaving his mark on the field. He recently became just the fourth player in FBS history to eclipse 2,000 career yards in both rushing and receiving, and will finish his career second in school history in receptions. Yet for all his on-field success, Foster hopes that Sun Devil fans remember the young man behind the facemask. “I want to be remembered as a good person,” he said. “Football will take care of itself. Being a good person and a good teammate, that’s what I want to be known for.” ▲

Italian Sunrise Hits the Desert Citrine shines bright as it brings a modern twist of the Old World to Tempe

AFTER FINDING GREAT SUCCESS in Old Town Scottsdale with EVO, restaurateur Nick Neuman and his business partner, Chef Peter DeRuvo, knew that they needed to strike a different chord once they decided to open a restaurant deep within the bustling culinary scene growing all around the heart of ASU. “Tempe has a different style and a different attitude, and it didn’t feel right trying to force EVO down here,” explained Neuman. “You just walk around downtown Tempe and can feel how much energy is here and how urban it feels, and I just wanted to match that feel with the style of food and the attitude we have here.” The result is Citrine, a concept named after a lemon-colored gemstone that is said to resemble sunshine. Housed next to the Tempe Transportation Center just east of Mill Avenue, Citrine’s open, industrial, loft-like feel is enhanced with whitewashed brick walls accented by polished stainless steel and distressed wood tabletops. An elevated open kitchen peers out over the dining room, which includes a 30-person bar top as its centerpiece. Two walls of sliding glass doors unveil the patio right on 5th Street leading the eye toward a panoramic view of the southwest plaza of Sun Devil Stadium. With Citrine’s menu, Chef DeRuvo

reveals his deep passion for traditionalstyle Italian cooking that incorporates a bit from every region of the country. That passion was on full display as AZSAL sat down to enjoy an evening hosted by the Citrine crew. From a classic Sazerac to a French 75 — a refreshing concoction incorporating Hendricks’s Gin, fresh lemon juice and simple syrup before getting topped-off with champagne — cocktails led straight to a diverse selection of recommended appetizers. The Asparagi featured roasted asparagus and a perfectly fried farm egg, wild mushrooms and truffle oil, and paired well with the Polpetti — veal and ricotta meatballs, soaked in marinara and perched atop a bed of vibrant greens. Not to be outdone was the Burrata, a fresh Italian cheese featuring an outer shell of fresh mozzarella with a gooey inside of cream and curds. Placed over shingled Noble bread and surrounded with charred tomatoes still on the vine and Opal basil, all of which was drizzled with 12 year old balsamic and Apulian olive oil, completed this light yet memorable dish. Heartier fare followed, including a selection of pizzas from Citrine’s woodburning oven. More of a traditional entrée, the Brassato of Beef wowed the entire table. Braised for over 4 hours, the tender

From their honest approach to Italian cuisine to their selection of crafted beer, wine, and spirits, Citrine is full of special touches that make it a unique addition to the Downtown Tempe landscape. Barolo beef rested on a mound of mascarpone whipped polenta and horseradish, all of which came together for an amazing bite of magic. Nothing on the menu, however, demonstrated the true chef-driven culture at Citrine quite like one of their signature charcuterie boards. “We may not be the only one, but I believe we are definitely the largest salumeria in Arizona. Chef is proud of that, and really focuses on quality and finding the best Italian meats and cheeses,” Neuman said. That sense of pride permeates out to the dining room as well. “The great thing about our charcuterie boards is that it allows the chefs to just be really expressive,” explained Front-of-

Winter Skin-Sanity Nine tips to avoid dry, chapped and rough skin during the cold months in Arizona

▲ ▲ ▲

IT’S NO SURPRISE that the combination of dry air and cool temperatures in the Southwest can prove to be a nightmare for your skin. As with any other season, you need to adjust your daily routine accordingly to keep your skin fresh and renewed. The following tips will help you rejuvenate your skin and keep you looking your best for the winter season. DON'T SKIP THE TONER Applying toner will normalize the skin's pH level, leaving it dewy and moisturized. Misting your skin throughout the day will allow the toner to replenish your skin and keep you looking fresh. CURB YOUR CRAVINGS Be sure to limit sugar intake. When your body processes sugar, it turns into glucose which destroys collagen and your skin's elasticity. Eating fiber-rich foods can help ward off hunger and your sweet tooth. EXFOLIATE TWICE A WEEK Dead skin and bacteria left on your face can irritate your acne and leave scarring. Be sure to slough it off with a gentle exfoliator. But don’t overdo it — think longer, not harder.

WATCH THE BLOW DRYER The extreme heat and extended use of a blow dryer facing your neck can break capillaries and, over time, leave them permanently broken. USE LUKEWARM WATER When rinsing soap or body wash, avoid water that is too hot or too cold. Your skin is very sensitive and not being careful with temperature can cause irritation and break capillaries. That means shower water temperature can also be damaging if it is too hot. USE AN OATMEAL-BASED SCRUB Abrasive scrubs and exfoliants are too harsh on your skin during winter. Milder, oatmeal-based facial scrubs can unplug the clogged pores. AVOID PRODUCTS THAT USE MINERAL OIL OR PETROLEUM Mineral oil and petroleum, both derived from fossil fuel, may clog your pores and prevent your body from flushing out toxins through your skin, leading to breakouts. Be sure to check the ingredients on all your skincare products and cosmetics.

Be Respectful of Good Sleep Dr. Sung Lee of Brain State Technologies discusses proper sleeping patterns

▲ ▲

GOOD SLEEP IS PRICELESS. Without adequate sleep, our health, performance and well-being are at risk of being compromised. Furthermore, scientific thinking considers sleep to be the very basis for our brain’s capacity to be adaptive in complex environments by preserving the neuronal connections that do not get used during the day. Dr. Sung Lee, Director of Research at Brain State Technologies, provides the following tips to achieve good sleep. Is proper hydration important for good sleep? Our bodies are mostly made up of water, which is necessary for moving supplies of energy and oxygen. With low circulating volume, delivery of these critical resources becomes less efficient. Drinking water first thing in the morning is highly recommended, as we lose moisture throughout the night simply by breathing. Does stress cause insomnia? Stress is certainly a major contributor to insomnia, and one study found that since 1985, the percentage of Americans sleeping six hours or less each night has increased by 31 percent. Early humans lived with the slow rhythms of nature, and the brain had time to recover from any given stressor. Now, humans are exposed to multiple stressors on a continual basis, so brains are now at risk of “rewiring” themselves to be on a state of high alert — which makes sleep difficult for indefinite periods. The need for lifestyles changes and technolo-

gies that can help the brain better handles stress is more important than ever. What are some tips for clearing your mind before bed that can help you relax and fall asleep? Any activity one finds calming — a good book, relaxing music, candlelight, a warm bath, etc. — is likely to help brain rhythms move from the faster to slower frequencies that help bring sleep. On the other hand, some people find that a cold shower helps them sleep by causing a brief burst of activation in the high-arousal (“fight or flight”) system, that is quickly followed by a compensatory wave of activity in the low-arousal (“rest and digest”) system.

Does eating dinner too late in the evening contribute to poor sleep? Yes, and this may be explained by understanding that the brain is highly active during sleep, performing a number of restorative functions. If there is competition from the digestive system to metabolize a large meal, then sleep functions may be compromised. Just as importantly, the circadian rhythm of the digestive system is not tuned for the later part of the day, and there is evidence that having meals too late contributes to glucose intolerance (pre-diabetes) and obesity. For most people, leaving at least three hours between the last meal and bedtime is probably a good idea.

graveyard) shifts, and for many these schedules are associated with poor daytime sleep, fatigue, and risk of car accidents after their shift is over. There is some evidence that taking a nap before a night shift may help increase alertness during the shift. Recently, a research grant from the United States Army Research Office to Brain State Technologies assisted in the development of relaxation technology that enhances good sleep, learning and performance optimization. ▲

to report sleeping five or six hours per night, as compared to seven hours or more. Many parents find that there is a certain key to helping their child go to sleep — a certain song, form of physical touch, presence of a certain person or time. Above all, find the rhythm of your child’s behaviors and adjust your daily routines so you can tune into that rhythm. Does working odd hours, such as night shifts, affect your sleep pattern? Nowadays, many individuals work night (or

How does caffeine affect our sleep? Caffeine acts as a stimulant by blocking receptors for a substance called adenosine, which accumulates in the brain during waking hours and creates the urge to sleep. That is, caffeine appears to “prevent” the brain from realizing that it is tired. However, this effect weakens with prolonged use as the brain adapts to the “new normal.” For those who enjoy the cognitive-enhancing and mood-lifting properties of caffeine, it is probably sensible to adjust one’s usage pattern on a regular basis, and even to discontinue it altogether for occasional periods. Is it true that the “blue light” from smart phones and tablets before bed can limit the amount of melatonin in your brain? Light is detected by cells in the retina of the eye. These cells are connected to the brain, and as evening falls and daylight dwindles, retinal cells trigger the brain to release the hormone melatonin, which helps promote the onset of sleep. LED computer screens and smart phones have a certain wavelength of “blue light” that is shown to interfere with the secretion of melatonin and thereby disrupts sleep. It is a good idea to limit the amount of time you use the computer in the evenings before sleep. It has been shown that orange-tinted “blue-blocking” glasses can help blunt the effect of LED screens on melatonin secretion. Do parents with young children suffer from insomnia? A study has shown that parents with children who are two years old or less are significantly more likely

AFTER THE RECENT LEGALIZATION OF RECREATIONAL MARIJUANA in Colorado, Washington, Alaska and the District of Columbia, advocates are looking to keep the momentum going as the nation looks toward next year’s election cycle. Many experts are pointing to Arizona as a possibility to pass legislation in 2016, and with recent estimates showing that the market for legal cannabis in the United States has grown by 74% in just the last year (making marijuana a $2.7 billion industry), it should come as no surprise that the first annual Southwest Cannabis Conference + Expo was held here in the Valley at the

end of October. With more than 300 floor exhibits, interactive workshops, and guest speakers, as well as plenty of industry networking opportunities, a job fair and more, the SECC Expo drew in tens of thousands to the Phoenix Convention Center. “This conference was designed to allow policy makers and national industry leaders, investors, business executives, health experts, job seekers and entrepreneurs a place to learn, share ideas, and connect with others on the national cannabis scene,” explained Rory Mendoza, who was the executive director of the event. Among those appearing at the SWCC Expo was Katherine Grimm, who became the breakout star of CNN’s popular docu-series “High Profits.” The show followed the saga of Clever Gent Bud, a recreation dispensary in Breckenridge, Colorado of which Grimm is CEO. The show helped to establish her as an intelligent, strategic cannabis entrepreneur and a leader in a rapidly evolving industry. In an effort to help clarify the latest legislative issues related to cannabis in Arizona specifically, local speakers included Scottsdale attorneys Laura Bianchi and Ryan Hurley of the Rose Law Group. • Nearly 75 percent of seniors in a recent AARP poll support medical marijuana. • In 2014, Colorado becomes the first state to legalize recreational marijuana. • Medical marijuana dispensaries outnumber Starbucks 3 to 1 in Colorado • After legalizing recreational Cannabis, Colorado and Washington see estimated tax revenues soar to more than $550 million. See, pot pays. • In 2015, about half of the people in the United States have tried marijuana, 12% have used it in the past year, and 7.3% have used it in the past month.

two dozen speakers from the state’s growing marijuana industry shared their stories and participated in question and answer sessions focusing on how participants can advance their cannabis careers. “Our goal is for people to utilize this conference from every angle, especially as an educational tool for the future of the business,” says Mendoza. “We want to bring the marijuana and cannabis industry to the forefront in the Southwest.” More information on the Southwest Cannabis Conference + Expo is available on their website at AWCCExpo.com.

The SWCC Expo showcased the industry’s most innovative products, along with scheduled seminars and presentations by industry business leaders and experts. It provided an electric environment where industry reformers, entrepreneurs, investors and attendees met, networked and learned about the medicinal values of marijuana for people around the world. The Smokin’ Hot Sonata Hybrid This 2016 Hyundai Sonata is a top contender for best in show in the sleek sedan department

▲ ▲ ▲

The 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid cut no corners and gives plenty back to drivers. It’s economic on a variety of levels and lets the driver look good doing good.

SLEEK LINES AND STATE OF THE ART AMENITIES are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. I drove in comfort with the peace of mind knowing that I was not just looking good while cruising the Valley, but taking the accelerator off of my average fuel consumption. The Sonata achieved best in-class in a variety of departments, including passenger and cargo volume. For a midsize sedan the Sonata Hybrid offers the most interior

room amongst the competition. This is in big part to a more compact battery that is fixed in the trunk—a battery that sports a lifetime warranty. The creature comforts are amazing in the Sonata. I thoroughly enjoyed driving around town on clear summer nights, taking great pleasure in the amazing views from the panoramic sunroof. The ergonomic design of the interior enhances the driver's satisfaction. Everything was in easy reach, including steering-wheel-mounted audio, phone, and cruise control kept my attention on the road and left the stresses of distraction at the curb. The advanced navigation system is on point. Its voice recognition makes finding the right song, best restaurant or current traffic conditions convenient. When I hit the typical Interstate10 gridlock in the afternoon I kept my cool in my climate controlled, extremely adjustable driver’s seat. The back passenger windows come with manual sunshades that cut down the glare for my backseat passengers. I had to do some errands and after hitting up IKEA the 60/40 split fold-down rear seatback was exactly what I needed to pack up my new end tables and load of Swedish meatballs.

The center console is like something out of “Star Wars.” The Sonata Hybrid sports wicked tech specs with its 4.2-inch LCD color screen showing the status of the vehicle’s operations and hybrid energy flow. A read back-up cam, Smart Cruise Control and Lane Departure Warning keep things not just efficient but safe. I pushed the 193-net horsepower across the San Tan 202. The 6-speed automatic transmission is smooth and responsive despite the driving conditions. Part of the Hybrid’s powerhouse comes from the most efficient battery on the market. A polymer gel is used as the electrolyte in its battery. The design makes way for a thinner and lighter casing, dropping weight and size, making for a boost in efficiency. This combined with the Sonata’s newly designed 2.0L 4-cylinder engine that runs on regular

acceleration quick. For being such a large car the body roll was minimal and I felt like I was in control of the vehicle in a variety of conditions, including the 20-minute torrential desert downpour that had me trying to push the Sonata Hybrid off its keel. No matter how hard I tried the stability control kept the car from spinning out, even in over a half inch of water. A big part to the car’s overall stability on the daily is the aerodynamic touches the Hyundai engineers added. The front end lip and read spoiler keep all four tires dug into the asphalt even at excess speeds of 80 miles per hour. Even though the term Hybrid has never reached pejorative status with consumers there can certainly be a stigma attached to it when considering performance. Its sculpted lines make it a sight on the road while cutting down on drag where it matters. LED daytime running lights in the front and the back not only look sick, but also increase general visibility. However, its onlookers who will want the best visibility since the Sonata Hybrid sports a modern design from stem to stern including a very appealing raked roofline and 17-inch alloywheels and standard lip spoiler for the low end drag coefficient. I didn’t expect the kind of performance I got out of the Sonata Hybrid when I first saw her resting in my driveway. Most modern luxury sedans tend to maintain an edge when comes to sporty prowess, but the Sonata was certainly in touch with the road. The throttle was responsive and the

One Just Isn’t Enough Arizona’s real estate market remains hotter than ever for second home purchases

▲ ▲ ▲

... a real estate report revealed that close to 20% of the Valley homebuyers are from out of state ... 12% of homebuyers were purchasing local Valley abodes as a second residence.

WHO DOESN’T DREAM OF A LIFESTYLE LIKE THE RICH AND FAMOUS? Adoring fans, VIP access everywhere, luxury to the extreme, and second homes around the globe. While most of us won’t taste the former, second homes are, believe it or not, is quite feasible, especially in Arizona. Last year a real estate report from Arizona State University revealed that close to 20% of the Valley homebuyers are from out of state. On top of that 12% of homebuyers were purchasing local Valley abodes as a second residence. According to real

estate expert Gary Colin these statistics are the reason it is important to keep out-ofstate and second homebuyers in mind when marketing upper end residences. Target A large number of homebuyers, local, regional, and international, are still finding value in their purchases in the Valley. Some of the hottest properties are move-in ready homes on the water, golf course properties and residences in gated communities. Why? Not just for the obvious luxury and safety appeal, but also because in Arizona these types of properties can be purchased for a fraction of the cost similar homes in other states would go for. Sellers should know that buyers can make up nearly 30% of the homes purchase. Turnkey properties that are ready to move into and lifestyle options are both important factors to discerning homebuyers. The fewer improvements needed have proven to be more enticing property to those looking for a second home. Of course lifestyle is a big factor, so those waterfront, golf course laden, gated homes are always in demand for those looking to soak up everything the Valley has to offer. In today’s market vacation rental by owner homes are hot.

Bigger answer, we love to vacation in AZ and look forward to retirement in AZ. These monitoring devices come in many shapes and styles to afford out-ofstate buyers more control in keeping an eye on their property. How does one go about setting up a secure VRBO? According to a colleague and resident of Colin, “We use VRBO.com for advertising and also by word of mouth. We use keyless entry, security cameras on all entries. We have the pool & spa, HVAC systems all controlled electronically and remotely as easy as checking your smart phone. We manage from afar but enjoy our visits to the Valley of the Sun 3-4 times per year. Safety Keeping those we hold close safe under one roof is every homeowners top priority. However, this can be a challenge and a concern when a residence is only occupied for a limited portion of time. Second homes can be targets for crime, but fear not. Technology advancements have created products that will assuage the angst of homeowners. Electronic monitoring equipment such as thermostat and cameras has enabled both the traditional winter visitor and second homebuyer to feel more comfortable. Doing a VRBO, vacation rental by owner, is now safer and more practical with the advent of such surveillance equipment since owners will have more control and access to their property even though they are a couple of thousand miles away. “Vacation home owners and second home buyers utilize these advancements in technology to help offsetting some of the costs of the upscale homes purchased in
