A warm winter welcome from your Ayrshire Chamber President

President: Waiyin Hatton

IT is with great honour and pleasure that I have taken on the role of President of Ayrshire Chamber at the Annual General Meeting in September. First of all, I want to pay tribute to Willie Mackie, past President, who has worked tirelessly over the last two years promoting and supporting the Chamber. Willie has been particularly generous in using his extensive networks to further the Chamber's aims. He has engaged the Board systematically, drawing on individuals' strengths and interests. He will be a very hard act to follow! On behalf of the rest of the Board, I want to record our sincere thanks to Willie and wish him well in all his endeavours. My 'baptism of fire' was being thrown into the Business Week just 11 days after being installed as the new President. But what better way to get to know SO many members at the week-long events, finding out about their respective business and putting faces to names. It was extremely rewarding for the Chamber Team to see the strong attendance at events and the very positive feedback on networking – and indeed, business - opportunities as a result. There were so many highlights that week that it would be impossible to single out any particular one. What must be acknowledged is the high quality of entrants in the Business Awards, culminating in the cream-of-creams at the Awards Dinner on Thursday evening. So much so that I lost my voice from the amount of cheering I did throughout the celebrations (my husband thought Christmas came early for him!). My first 50 days continued to be colourful. There were follow-up chat/meetings with members to explore other opportunities in making Ayrshire THE place to live, work and play. I attended several functions for promoting as well as celebrate local businesses and their achievements. And meeting more interesting people! It has become even clearer for me that there is such vibrancy and aspirations in Ayrshire that we need to find more ways to both maximise the momentum and tell the world in growing our economy. We can all support each other through the Chamber's initiative Buy Ayrshire, which was launched at the Business Week - Doing business in Ayrshire to keep Ayrshire in business. Please do visit the Chamber website, display the sticker and get tweeting! Val Russell, our CEO, and I have met on a number of occasions. I know she has great ambitions, and is constantly looking out for and open to new ideas, in the continued development of the Chamber. All suggestions welcomed! The Chamber has a raft of events and activities to suit the varying interest/needs of our members. I look forward to meeting more of you in the future. Here is wishing you all a very successful and happy 2014! Waiyin Hatton President, Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce & Industry your ayrshire business winter 2013

Ayrshire College Leads the Way in Advanced Manufacturing

Engineering students learn CNC Programming skills at Ayrshire College OVER 150 Ayrshire College students each year will be trained in the latest technology for machining thanks to significant investment in a state of the art Mazak Machining Centre, the only one of its kind in a Scottish college. Responding to consultation, local companies asked Ayrshire College to invest in new equipment to ensure students could

Callerton

learn the latest industry skills required by modern manufacturing workplaces. In response, Ayrshire College purchased two CNC Machine Centres and a suite of Matrix Cam 2 training software to enable students in Ayrshire to develop advanced machining skills. CNC machines support a high level of precision machining which can produce complex shapes that would be almost

Poggenpohl

impossible to achieve with manual machining. CNC programming and machining are key skills within the supply chain of the Oil and Gas sector, and many local firms are heavily involved with this sector, producing highly detailed and precise components. Hugh Rankin, Engineering Manager of Howco Oilfield Services, said: “It is great news that Ayrshire College has invested in new machinery and computer aided manufacturing systems to support a modern manufacturing training program. Investing in hardware is only part of the answer to meet the challenges facing our industry. Operating these machines requires highly skilled operators and Howco warmly welcomes Ayrshire College’s commitment to offering training courses that enable students to match our industry requirements.” Alan Walker, Managing Director of Maxiim Consumer Electronics Ltd and Ayrshire College Board member said: “This is a great example of ensuring our students learn relevant skills using the best technology in an environment relevant to the workplace.” The College’s engineering team will customise courses to take account of the new equipment and help students to develop leading edge skills in an industry environment. CNC training will be available to full time students, apprentices, existing employees and new recruits to the industry.

Rocket to the top of Google THE majority business owners aren’t really sure where to start when it comes to getting to the top of Google’s search rankings, but most understand that with 85% of buying decisions beginning online, getting their website visible on the first page of the search engines is critical. Outbox 4 specialise in ranking the most competitive keyword terms with a first page. Barry Duddy head of Outbox4 Marketing helps, “Getting to the top of Google isn’t easy, but it’s achievable if you follow these tactics you’ll see your website rise up the search engine rankings. Here are five techniques you can use to help get your business’s website to the top of Google rankings.” 1. Choose the right keywords. If you’re goal is to get to the top of Google, you need to be sure that you are targeting the right keyword terms. 2. Devise a local search marketing strategy. A location focused search marketing strategy can be an easier goal to achieve than getting into global search engine rankings. 3. Focus on great content. Creating well written, quality content means that your website becomes a trusted authority in the eyes of the search engines 4. Generate backlinks. Getting other website owners to link to your site isn’t easy, but it’s fundamental if you want to rank well – especially in competitive niches. 5. Utilise social media. Aside from SEO, it is a good idea to have a cogent social media strategy in place in order to better engage with customers in your geography and industry. www.outbox4.com

of the firm’s development, from the difficult economic times experienced in 2008 and the changes which had been made over the last five years, to reposition the firm as the leading firm of accountants within Ayrshire. A number of initiatives were highlighted including in the early days the strive towards the paperless office through the use of technology, to the more recent

creation of numerous service lines with the formation of William Duncan (IT Solutions) Ltd, William Duncan Wealth Management, William Duncan (Business Recovery) Ltd and Xtra Accounting Limited. The majority of these initiatives were inspired with the help of strategic guidance from the 2020 Group and particularly Gordon Gilchrist, their Managing Director. Robert went on to comment “we are absolutely delighted at receiving this most prestigious award. DOUBLE celebrations for SimpsInns at the SLTN Awards as the family owned hospitality group brought not one but two prestigious awards back home to Ayrshire. The glittering awards night, at the Glasgow Hilton, was hosted by Scottish comedian Kevin Bridges, who had the 700-strong audience in raptures. Team SimpsInns were up for two awards on the night after The Waterside was shortlisted for the ‘Best Outdoor Area’ (Sponsored by Magners) and Si! Café:Bar:Restaurant/Si! Italia was nominated for the ‘Inspiration Award’ sponsored by McEwan’s. The night would turn into something special after one award was quickly followed by another as both The Waterside and Si! won their respective categories. “I can’t tell you how pleased we are to have won these two prestigious awards,” beamed Malcolm. “The team has worked so hard to make this possible. I am absolutely delighted for Si! as we took a chance on this £2million redevelopment – supported by the Irvine Bay Regeneration Programme - and in many ways stepped out of our comfort zone to create this stunning bar and restaurant venue.” It turned out to be a stunning night in Glasgow, made all the sweeter after two prestigious SLTN Awards were brought back to Ayrshire. www.simpsinns.com

Green Home Cashback scheme opens to social housing providers THE Scottish Government has extended a grant scheme to local authorities and registered social landlords in a bid to give more Scots green upgrades to their homes this winter. Scotland’s 32 local authorities and 246 registered social landlords can now apply for a grant of up to £1m under the Green Homes Cashback scheme, managed by the Energy Saving Trust. The money must be put towards making energy saving upgrades, such as installing a new boiler, to homes under their care. The scheme for householders is also still open. LXB Unveils 'Corton’ Plans For £180 Million Investment In South Ayrshire PLANS have been unveiled for a £180 million investment in Ayrshire that will generate almost 1,000 permanent new jobs and create more than 750 new homes. Investor and developer LXB has submitted a Proposal of Application Notice (PAN) to South Ayrshire Council for the scheme on 150 acres of land at Corton. If approved it will be the first phase of the South East Ayr masterplan, a vision to deliver 2,700 homes over the next 30 years in three phases on a 450 acre site that was given a ‘minded to grant’ decision by South Ayrshire Council almost four years ago. Corton is critical to unlocking the entire South East Ayr development, providing all the community infrastructure that will allow the later phases to be delivered. This major investment will add £20 million a year to the local economy. Facilities will include a new primary school, neighbourhood centre, local shops, a family pub and community and health facilities. A new Sainsbury’s foodstore which will provide up to 400 full and part-time jobs will anchor the neighbourhood centre.

If approved by the local authority, work could start as soon as 2015, with the first 100 homes planned for completion in early 2017. In addition to 1,000 permanent jobs the plans will support as many as 2,700 temporary construction

jobs. Harry Sadleir of LXB said, “We have a realistic, economically viable scheme that will create a thriving new community and deliver a multimillion pound shot in the arm for the local economy.”

BARR is a m u l t i divisional company serving the UK construction and waste sectors. Its Ayrshire divisions are rebranding to reflect the clearly focused business which has resulted following reorganisation of the company post-recession. To launch the rebrand, Barr held its inaugural Company Evening in the Princess Royal Suite at Ayr Racecourse on the 5th September. Exporting closer to home RECENTLY we’ve been hearing more and more about the international trade opportunities offered by new and emerging markets. From Brazil and China to Russia and India, there’s no doubt that the high-growth these markets are experiencing offer significant oppor tunities for Scottish businesses across a range of sectors and industries. How do European markets compare? With 27 diverse countries and over 500 million consumers just a couple of hours away, the EU offers a vast amount of oppor tunities and more and more Scottish companies are tapping into these. Indeed, the Global Connections Sur vey released earlier this year highlighted that

Scottish expor ts to the EU are up by 14.7%. With legislation making it easier, faster and more cost effective to do business with Europe, it’s now almost as easy to trade across Europe as it is to within UK borders and despite recent economic turbulence and challenges in the Eurozone, Europe remains a hugely impor tant market. I’ve been working with a number of local, smaller craft type businesses over the past few months and European markets such as France and Germany offer great growth potential for these companies and many more. There’s undoubtedly a continued demand for Scottish products and services the world over and markets closer to home play a

enrolment pension legislation has seen a surge in demand for Ayrshire firm of Chartered Financial Planners, Munro Partnership, services and advice. This looks set to continue as the total number of UK employers that will be affected by automatic enrolment legislation will increase significantly from the start of 2014. Automatic enrolment was introduced in October 2012 to ensure that employees have access to a workplace pension scheme. The aim of legislation is to encourage individuals to take responsibility and save for their retirement. Many employees who have already been enrolled into a pension scheme have seen real benefits when there have been effective communications from their employer by involving an external adviser. Establishing a project plan with an adviser will not only help the employer meet their legal responsibilities, it will also help to improve employees understanding of the legislation and 12

your ayrshire business winter 2013

in the future. For an employer, the key to successfully meeting their automatic enrolment duties is to plan early – well in advance of when they are legally required to have a pension scheme in place. There are a number of important decisions that have to be made and this will have an impact on several employer functions: including company directors, their human resources department, their payroll manager, finance department and likely an external adviser. Employers have really benefited from engaging with advisers who already have experience helping employers with automatic enrolment in order to understand the roles and responsibilities that they need to fulfil. Many employers are sleep walking towards their staging date unaware of the implications of not meeting their employer duties on time. More than ever, it is important to act now. Munro Partnership Ltd – Being ready for Automatic Enrolment Presentation on the 16th of January 2014 at the Kylestrome Hotel in Ayr (11 a.m. for 11.30 a.m.). A soup and sandwich lunch will be provided following the presentation.

Munro Partnership Working With Local Charities Ayr based Chartered Financial Planners, Munro Partnership, have been fairly active in recent months in their support of local charities. The company were the main sponsors of this year’s Ayrshire Hospice Golf Day at West Kilbride Golf Club. The event which normally has 18 teams participating was increased to 36 teams and over £12,500 was raised for the Ayrshire Hospice. Munro Partnership also helped organise the Charities in Partnership fun run. The event raised £3,389 which benefited Aberlour Childcare Trust, Ayrshire Cancer Support, Riding for the Disabled and South Ayrshire Befriending Project. Munro Partnership Director Robin Dale said “We are always happy to help local charities where possible as we understand the benefits they bring to those who need their support and how difficult, especially in the current environment, fundraising is”.

SPOTLIGHT ON…Lochaven International Ltd. From Ayrshire to Hogwarts and the World! LOCHAVEN is a textile manufacturer, based in Stewarton, making clothing in lambswool, cashmere and Shetland wools. Exporting its own brand label worldwide, Lochaven also manufactures for luxury brands, including the recently completed 2013 “made in Scotland” range for Prada of Milan. Lochaven was chosen by Warner Bros to supply the Hogwarts school knitwear worn by the actors in the Harry Potter series of films. In the final film many students are seen wearing Lochaven branded school tanktops, cardigans and jumpers in the “Battle of Hogwarts” scene. As a result of this, Lochaven is now a Warner Bros global licensee of replica Hogwarts school jumpers,

Keith Murray, spokesperson for Lochaven said, “When we first entered into the Harry Potter license in 2009 we received significant press

Since then we have been too busy to encourage media interest! Our products are made in Scotland from wool spun in Scotland and it is apparent that the rest of the world places a high value on the Scottish Knitwear industry as demand for our products remains buoyant.” www.lochaven.co.uk

Business AMBITION

The overall aims of the programme are to create jobs, keep jobs, help businesses startup, help businesses grow, increase the number of social enterprises and, ultimately, help improve the local economy in South Ayrshire in a lasting and meaningful way. It was established by the Council as a determined and proactive response to the economic challenges facing the local area, as South Ayrshire Council Leader, Councillor Bill McIntosh, explained: "AMBITION is all about taking a bold – but lasting and sustainable – approach to help achieve economic stability and security for our communities. That doesn't just mean supporting businesses to get off the ground; it also means helping businesses increase the number of people they employ and – crucially – helping people gain the skills, knowledge and experience they require to take full advantage of these job opportunities. "The new incubator, which is an exciting new way for the private and public sectors to work together, is a terrific example of how we plan to achieve this. I would urge anyone starting up – or interested in starting up – a business to get in touch. We have all that's needed to support a business in getting started – all we ask in return is your AMBITION." Graeme Currie, Deputy Head of Operations at LESL – one of the Council's partners in delivering the AMBITION programme – added: "We're delighted to be a partner in the Heathfield incubator. As one of the largest operators of incubation centres in Scotland, we know that incubator space helps businesses flourish and grow at a faster rate. " For further information about the Heathfield incubator units or the AMBITION programme, call 01292 616265 or visit www.ambitionprogramme.co.uk

Councillor McIntosh officially opens the new AMBITION incubator unit NEW or start-up businesses across South Ayrshire can take advantage of fantastic modern office accommodation, hands-on business support and mentoring – and even grant funding – thanks to South Ayrshire Council's brand-new AMBITION enterprise and employment programme. The intensive support is part of the AMBITION for start-ups strand of the programme, which got underway with the opening of a dedicated business incubator unit at Heathfield in Ayr, the first of three such units to be created by the Council. Units in Girvan and Maybole will follow. The Heathfield incubator provides the ideal location to develop and grow a new business, 14

your ayrshire business winter 2013

with space for six businesses to work out of the unit on a full-time basis, with additional meeting, conference and hot-desking facilities. Complementing the practical support is a 'wraparound' package of mentoring, access to expertise and advice, and hands-on support to ensure businesses get the best possible start and really get the chance to grow. The AMBITION programme will see the Council invest £1.5 million over three years to support job creation and economic growth in South Ayrshire through four key strands: - AMBITION for Start-Ups - AMBITION for Business Growth - AMBITION for Employment - AMBITION for Social Enterprise.

Are emails killing your working day? Hitting it off with

DID you know that U.S. Workers spend 13 hours per week reading, writing or responding to email? Are emails causing you stress both in and out of the office? Are the “pings” of your email alerts now an intrusion into our personal and business space and time? At the beginning of the day, faced with an overflowing inbox and an array of voice messages, it’s tempting to “clear the decks” before starting “your own work”. When you’re up to date, you tell yourself, it will be easier to focus on your own work but by then it could be mid morning or later with your energy levels drained and your brain on a go slow. Research at Microsoft’s offices highlighted a dramatic demonstration of how emails caused distraction from primary tasks. Messages diverted attention for an average of ten minutes and then workers looked at other applications as well, meaning a further ten to fifteen minutes went by before they finally resumed their primary task. If Email overload is the problem... The solutions are... Change our habits about how we deal with our incoming emails Send better emails ourselves saving both you and the recipient time Reduce the number of irrelevant and junk emails coming into our inbox. Educate all our contacts in best practice to change the number and type of email they send Want to learn how? The Chamber is being proactive in helping with this problem and is hosting a number of seminars on best practice in dealing with email overload and stress. Gemmell’s Soft Play using mainly social media has allowed us to tell new, existing and potential customers about the changes that are coming. We’re working with local businesses, including Big Blue Dog Design, to create and position our new image. Over time, as we’ve diversified into new areas of the business, our brand has got a little lost. So we’re looking at the branding

Employing Disabled People Makes Business Sense THERE are 6.9 million disabled people of working age in Great Britain. Employing disabled people makes good business sense as disabled employees are loyal, reliable and motivated. Understanding how to support disabled employees is important to maintaining a productive workforce, not least because people can develop a health condition or disability whilst in employment. Research with employers in the Lothians, showed that managers thought disabled employees were “good colleagues who did a great job”, were keen to work and prove their worth. Generally, disabled workers were valued not least because they were hard working and their sickness and absence rates were lower than average. Supervisors described particular employees as “inspirational” and suggested that larger businesses do more to spread the news about the positive aspects of employing disabled workers. A new £500,000 2-year government campaign is doing just that: Disability Confident. It provides streamlined guidance on recruiting and keeping disabled people in work and you tube videos of employers talking about good practice. To promote the hiring and retention of disabled people, employers are asked to make reasonable adjustments to their environments and employment processes. Some of the enablers to work disabled people cite are reduced or modified working hours and duties; written communication in plain English; personalised support or mentoring; accessible work areas/buildings. Lack of support and lack of role models, are considered barriers to getting and staying in work. In the past, employers have sometimes not engaged with disabled people for fear of doing the wrong thing. Advice and support is available – close to home there are the specialist disability employment agencies such as the East Ayrshire Supported Employment Service – contact sarah.parker@east-ayrshire.gov.uk and Hansel Employment Services. For more information, contact The Scottish Union of Supported Employment. www.susescotland.co.uk

Business Mentoring Scotland Expansion Funding Announced SCOTTISH Chambers of Commerce (SCC) have succeeded in their bid for funds to expand and extend Business Mentoring Scotland throughout the country enabling businesses across Scotland to benefit from business-to-business connections and knowledge transfer provided by the programme’s experienced mentors to support business growth in every sector in Scotland. Liz Cameron, Chief Executive, Scottish Chambers of Commerce said, “In the last year alone, SCC’s Business Mentoring Scotland programme contributed nearly £50 million to Scotland’s economy through business growth and created 960 new jobs whilst sustaining many more. 900 business mentors provide their experience, knowledge and time on a voluntary basis, and have supported over 8,000 businesses through this programme; this funding announcement is recognition of the success of the Business Mentoring Scotland approach to unlocking the expertise, knowledge and creativity in the private sector. This support from Scottish Enterprise, the Scottish Government and the European

Regional Development Fund will enable more Scottish businesses to benefit from a pool of talented individuals who all willingly sharing their knowledge, experience and connections to promote growth for businesses in Scotland. It is clear that Business Mentoring Scotland is unique, creative, and – simply – it just works. It was set up by business leaders themselves who know that their experience and connections can be harnessed to support other businesses in Scotland. Business Mentoring Scotland is a great example of successful partnership, led by business, funded by Government and Scottish Enterprise, and delivered on the ground by local Chambers of Commerce across Scotland. With business confidence on the up, and signs of buoyancy in our economic recovery, I am optimistic about the future prospects for business growth, and the creation of more job opportunities in Scottish businesses.” First Minister Alex Salmond said: “In June the Scottish Government asked for proposals from across the country, from organisations including local authorities, the third sector, business organisations and our

universities of ways in which they could support economic development, create jobs and build new businesses. The funding received by the Scottish Chambers of Commerce will help create new opportunities for businesses, contributing to Scotland’s sustainable economic growth. We are using every tool at our disposal to support jobs and invest in recovery.” Lena Wilson, Chief Executive, Scottish Enterprise said, “Business mentoring is one of the ways we help business leaders with their growth ambitions. By working with a mentor, leaders can tap into expertise and experience of a particular business challenge such as how to break into a new market or how to expand current operations. With this funding secured, the programme can continue to support over 800 businesses and organisations annually.” For more information on this FREE service, call Lorna Mercer 01292 670158

Girls into STEM Ayrshire pupils are Careers top class Around 100 S3 girls from schools all over North Ayrshire took part in an activity packed day to raise their awareness of careers in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and mathematics.)

Keen fourth, fifth and sixth year pupils from secondary schools across Ayrshire found out more about careers in the NHS at a special Awareness Day at University Hospital Ayr in September.

Locally and nationally, statistics show that whilst girls perform as well as boys in STEM subjects at school, there are big gender divides when post-school choices are made. Whilst the choices made are often the correct ones for individuals, there may be the perception that certain careers are only for boys, with girls losing out on good career opportunities. The day was a mix of hands-on activities run by the CITB, NATS, and Ayrshire College. The girls also had the opportunity to speak to a number of role models in a speed networking event - women working in these industries, in a wide variety of job roles and at different stages of their careers. A host of local and national businesses, mainly Ayrshire Chamber members took part including Avanticell, Barr, EDF, GSK, GE Caledonian, KCP Environmental, NATS, and Spirit. Girls also had the opportunity to meet with representatives from a range of colleges and universities.

The event is one of several initiatives and programmes through which NHS Ayrshire & Arran supports local schools, seeing 110 pupils attending and a further 120 signed up for a similar event at University Hospital Crosshouse in November. Staff from different departments, including pharmacy, medicine, nursing, healthcare and dentistry, spoke about their work before pupils competed in an Inter-School Challenge. Belmont Academy emerged victorious at the end of the morning

session, while Marr College took the title in the afternoon. Both received a trophy donated by Education Teams from the three local authorities in Ayrshire. Patricia Leiser, NHS Ayrshire & Arran’s Human Resources Director, commented: “We are delighted that so many young people took the opportunity to find out more about the NHS. On behalf of the department I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who participated in making this such a successful day”.

“Make Young People Your Business” is working in Kilmarnock While the Scottish Government is busy launching “Make Young People Your Business”, a national initiative aimed at getting businesses to take on and train young people, a company in East Ayrshire has already embraced the message and is going from strength to strength as a result. Character Joinery, based in Kilmarnock’s Lawson Street had been creating specialist traditional windows, doors, staircases and fitments for over 30 years and has successfully diversified into shop fronts and design and fitting for shops and the catering trade. His clients include Dumfries House, Elliots in Prestwick, Celtic Park and the new shop fronts being done as part of the regeneration of John Finnie Street. But as time went on, owner Kelvin Murray became aware that to grow and keep up with a bulging order book, he needed to bring in fresh young blood. With the economic downturn over the last six years, investment in apprenticeships had decreased and Kelvin realised that there were very few opportunities for young people looking to pursue a career in the trade. Younger, skilled craftsmen were difficult to find as older people reached retirement. He decided to see what he could do to help and get the chance to expand his future workforce at the same time. Kelvin explains: “At Character Joinery we

26

have always believed in training young people who would like to learn bench hand joinery. We enrol them at college for a four year course which means they spend half their time at college and half at our workshop. This is a considerable investment for most employers, but the help we’ve had from East Ayrshire Council has made the burden easier. They’re supporting young people by helping employers find potential candidates, making it easier for us to recruit candidates who are really motivated and suited to the job. They’ve helped with practical support but financially too, helping us keep initial wage costs to a minimum. Thanks to their encouragement I now have five young men working with me and they’re proving their worth every day.” Councillor Jim Buchanan, Spokesperson for Delivering Community Regeneration, East Ayrshire Council said: “Over the past few years we’ve supported over 200 young people into Modern Apprenticeships with

local businesses. With this new “Make Young People Your Business” initiative there are now 1250 places available throughout Ayrshire. This is great news for employers as it removes the previous boundaries which made it difficult for employers in Kilmarnock to take on South or North Ayrshire based young people and vice versa. Kelvin is a prime example of an employer who has embraced the opportunities available and whose business is thriving as a result.” For more details about how East Ayrshire Council’s team can help your business contact: 01563 503000 or youthemployment@eastayrshire.gov.uk

“As part of my work experience I was invited along with the staff of the Chamber to the Business to Business Exhibition where approximately 100 businesses take stalls and network with one another. “The day was a massive eye opener into the world of business. I entered the Princess Royal Suite at Ayr Racecourse unsure of what the day would hold. I began by dressing up the Chamber’s exhibitions stand which was based around their new marketing campaign, ‘The Mix’. With cooking utensils and cupcakes surrounding me the doors were opened and I stood back as the Education team put on their sales hats and began convincing businesses to offer work experience opportunities. I decided to walk around and take in first-hand the art of ‘networking’. Many professionals wandered the isles - business cards in hand – and spoke to stand holders about their company and vice versa. I was able to see the benefit of this exercise for businesses and also the importance of local companies working together. “Colin Blair – Buzzwork Group’s Managing Director – gave a keynote speech about his life, his career and his vision for the future of Ayrshire. He wasn’t afraid to mention the problems he faced when trying to build his company, along with advice and tips for anyone interested in running their own business. I found his talk highly valuable as it gave me an honest and realistic view of the issues that can be expected to arise for a company. As someone who – quite honestly – couldn’t wait to leave the area to go off to university, Colin also managed to make me think about how much Ayrshire can offer to the country and the rest of the world. This in turn has made me consider returning in a couple of years, business degree in hand (hopefully!), and joining in the effort to make my home reach its full potential. “I also had the opportunity to attend the ‘Collaborating for Growth’ event which was held to encourage businesses to bring forward any thoughts and problems they had about running a company in this difficult economic time. With the help of interactive technology over 30 local representatives held group discussions and shared opinions about various topics. Sitting at one of the tables gave me the opportunity to hear from people from a variety of sectors and helped me realise that each of these people shared common core issues. The event also gave me the opportunity to hear from the new principle of Ayrshire College, Heather Dunk, who projected her positive and passionate attitude across the whole room. Heather raised the point that she is not only running a school but also a £45million organisation. Not only that but her amazing achievement of gaining grant money to build a new Kilmarnock campus really demonstrated how her goal of ‘taking over the world’ was one step closer to fruition. “I’m so grateful to have been given the opportunity to work at the Ayrshire Chamber offices, experience all of their rigorous planning of Business Week come to life and have the chance to sit down with every staff member who kindly spared some time to talk about their role in the business and answered any questions I might have had. Thank you for having me! Billie, Prestwick Academy

Carly at the Chamber

“I have really enjoyed my week at the Chamber working with all the different people and learning about their individual job roles. My favourite part of the week was assisting Gill at the European day of languages as this gave me the opportunity to communicate with new people. “Overall the chamber has given me an insight into what it is like to be in a working environment. I will take on the skills and experience I have gained from this week into my future.” Carly Prestwick Academy, S4

Lauren’s insight into Commerce

“I really enjoyed my time at the Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce for work experience. “It was a great experience and gave me a good insight into how a business works and how teamwork is essential to keep a business running. “I enjoyed learning about everyone’s different roles and how they all do something completely different but are all equally important. I also enjoyed going to meet a potential member as I learned about all the facilities the Chamber offers, sale techniques and people skills.” Lauren, Ayr Academy

Future architect

“I’ve had a great time, and a brilliant experience during my time at Lawrence McPherson. I was given a project to work on which gave me the opportunity to learn new skills and techniques that I can now use when I am back at school. “The time that I have spent on my work experience placement has made me think more into the future, and architecture is a career choice that I would definitely consider. “I am very grateful for everyone who has helped give me this opportunity. Thank you.” Jack
