The new Saxen showroom occupies a century old former lace mill which neighbours one of the last remaining local lace mills in production, Morton, Young & Borland. Guests were invited to a guided tour of the lace mill to experience the previous life of the Saxen showroom. Guests at the event included; architects, specifiers, designers, East Ayrshire Council, Ayrshire Chamber, West FM radio, local press and businesses. Many were impressed with the transformation from Victorian lace mill to contemporary showroom. Saxen Ltd was established in 2007 and is run from the offices and showroom premises in Newmilns, Ayrshire by a dedicated team offering a personal level of customer service. Your host will begin by providing a short, fun and informative bowling

training session using our fantastic new teaching cards and games. You will learn the correct technique for rolling a lawn bowl, the objective of the game, how to score and what all the various pieces of equipment are for. In addition, your host will arrange your group into teams and a round robin style competition will follow. A buffet will follow the competition in the club house and the bar will be open throughout; so you are welcome to soak up the sunshine

and take your drinks outside whilst you bowl! Bowls Scotland is here to ensure that your evening is as fun, relaxing and enjoyable as possible; but we also hope to uncover some bowls stars of the future! Bowls Scotland is the National Governing Body for Lawn Bowls in Scotland and is responsible for the administration, development and organisation of the outdoor game in Scotland. We currently have 880 member clubs located throughout the country, with approximately 73000 members; making bowls one of the biggest sports in Scotland. We hope that by developing events such as this we can highlight the benefits of bowls and the merits of being involved in a community sport, played on local greens at local clubs! Happy feet FOR most of us who have had our feet wrapped in cosy socks all winter, spring is a time to get our feet out of hibernation. With the average person taking around 10,000 steps per day and 115,000 miles over a lifetime, a trip to the chiropodist or podiatrist could definitely be in order to ensure your feet look and feel healthy. Visiting a podiatrist can be very useful in the

prevention, detection, diagnosis and treatment of many foot disorders. Our feet are great indicators of health issues present in our bodies, with early symptoms of diabetes, arthritis and circulatory problems all shown in the feet, so it important to look after them. Here at the Chamber we have a new neighbour. Prestwick Airport Podiatry Clinic opened for business

on 7th February. The clinic operates from the First Aid Room on the first floor of the terminal building and will be there the first Thursday of every month from 9am-7pm. Run by Podiatrist Dr Vicki Fiddes, airport and Chamber staff have already tip-toed along to an Open Day to try out the services. Vicki explains, “Podiatry has traditionally been a nail cutting service for elderly patients. Our ethos is a modern approach to Podiatry provision, pushing the boundaries of care to offer patients the most up to date evidence based treatments. We offer a wide range of services to a variety of people, ranging from children with developmental problems resulting in poor foot mechanics, to young adults with ingrowing toenails. Expanding in Ayrshire AYRSHIRE based Linea Construction has moved to new larger premises in Ayr and have recruited the support of a Business Development and Marketing consultant to help them in their drive to secure new business. Make the most of the farming Single Payment Scheme (SPS) for 2013 while you can EACH year billions of pounds are paid to over 100,000 farmers across the UK as part of EU’s common agricultural policy. There has been much discussion about ways in which the SPS should change, and from 2014 the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has said it intends to move towards abolishing them in the seven years between 2014 and 2020 so if you are one of those who qualify, you need to make the most of that money this year. There is significant opposition to the move, as concerns are high that the profitability of farmers would be “severely undermined” if the SPS was removed, and their ability to plan for investment would be removed without the income stability that the SPS provides. In its fifth report, entitled ‘The Common Agricultural Policy after 2013’ the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee highlights that “over half of UK farms would be unprofitable without subsidy”, and that “ending direct payments is unachievable in the short term”. One of the biggest issues is the farmers’ place in the supply chain, as they are struggling to get the costs of their production properly covered because they are squeezed ever tighter by the supermarket chains who want to maximise profit while keeping costs to customers as low as possible. Choosing the best way to receive this money can save a small fortune, but it can be difficult to make that decision in advance. Your payment is always calculated in euros based on the size and production of your land and it is your decision whether you receive your funds in pounds sterling or euro. If you select sterling your entitlement is calculated based on the official payment rate set by the European Central Bank on 30th September 2013 automatically. Many UK farmers recognise that selecting to receive their payment in euro allows them the flexibility to target and fix an exchange rate they are happy with at any point during the year. Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce offers you access to currency experts through the Chamber Foreign Exchange Service who will work with you to help you get the best rate for your farming subsidy no matter what happens between now and the end of September. The difference to your pocket can be considerable. For example, last year’s ECB fixed rate was 79.805p. If you were due to receive €100,000 in subsidy, this would have given you £79,805. Getting that same subsidy at 85p means you would receive £85,000 – an additional £5,195, simply because the exchange rate was better. Music to your ears? Research finds business owners believe music increases sales MUSIC licensing company PPL is encouraging Scotland’s businesses to boost profitability by using music legally in the workplace. Latest research by the organisation has found that music in the workplace is vitally important to business success. In a survey of Scottish SME’s, more than a third (37%) of owner-managers questioned believed that playing music can increase trade or results. It also found that silence in the workplace is far from golden; with almost one in five (18%) admitting that they would prefer to lose a day’s trade, than operate in a silent environment. Christine Geissmar, Director of Operations at PPL said: “We know that playing music has huge financial benefits for businesses. We are encouraging businesses across Scotland to find out how they can enjoy the benefits of music, while being legally compliant.” Research found that business owners believe music can bring both emotional and financial benefits to staff and customers alike. More than three quarters reported that playing music in the workplace increases staff morale. Almost 70% felt that background music can help relieve tension and awkward silences in the workplace. Music Psychologist, Dr Vicky Williamson commented: “Music positively influences consumer mood/emotional states through psychophysiological reactions and autobiographical memory associations. Silence by comparison can be intrusive, as it throws unwelcome attention on the consumers’ behaviour. Music also provides an effective and adaptable tool for bringing a sense of pleasure and relaxation to the work environment, thereby promoting a positive attitude, higher job satisfaction and boosting a sense of brand identity and loyalty. A completely silent work environment can lack stimulation, interest and, for many people, a dynamic and creative source of energy.” The findings are part of the joint MusicWorks campaign from PPL and PRS for Music, designed to highlight the financial as well as emotional benefits that music can bring to business. BSI gives its seal of approval LAWRENCE McPherson Associates ISO 9001 accredited Quality Management System passed its 3 year reassessment. The audit, which was carried out by the British Standards Institute, is the first major reassessment of the Quality Management System since the Practice initially attained ISO 9001accreditation in 2010. Architectural partner, Stephen McGhee, said "We are delighted that the BSI has continued to give their re-approval of our Quality Management System. This reassessment comes months after our recently achieved CHAS (Construction Health and Safety) accreditation. Laying foundations for growth A FAMILY-run estate agency in Ayr has opened a second office in the town creating new jobs. Local firms get up to speed on new pension rules STARS of Dragon’s Den and the Apprentice have been leading a government advertising campaign to raise awareness of new pension’s legislation that was introduced in October 2012. This is the biggest ever change to work place pensions. From October onwards, the National Employment Savings Trust (NEST) and auto enrolment began to take effect. Businesses of all sizes will need to plan for auto enrolment to ensure they are adhering to the new legislation as it is a legal requirement. To raise awareness locally Ayrshire Chamber member, Munro Partnership, held a seminar at the Western House Hotel in Ayr. Over 30 Ayrshire employers attended. The seminar covered the key issues that employers must be aware of to comply with the auto enrolment rules. In short the new regulations mean:-

• Employers must automatically join employees into either a qualifying workplace pension or the new default NEST • Pay minimum contributions for eligible employees into their pensions • Ensure processes are put in place to adhere to the new pension rules All businesses are affected by the new legislation and must comply with their legal obligations. Some of the feedback received after the presentation showed that in some cases employers do not fully understand the implications of the new rules and what they have to do to adhere to them. AFTER the resounding successes of the previous three Fife Regattas the dates of the 2013 event have been announced as 28th June to 5th July. This invitation only event invites the famous William Fife designed and built classic yachts to return to their birthplace on the Firth of Clyde, Scotland and to participate in a unique regatta. As with the previous Fife Regattas, participants will enjoy spectacular scenery and hospitality, but with a new itinerary that combines past favourites with new destinations. The event will be based at Largs Yacht Haven, the marina adjacent to the site of the Fife boatyard, and over the course of the week the fleet will sail to Rothesay, Isle of Bute, through the magnificent Kyles of Bute to Tighnabruaich and onwards to Portavadie on Loch Fyne. The event comprises racing and cruising, a busy social programme with a Scottish flavour and even a short cruise on board the famous paddle steamer, Waverley. Charities get online Gift Aid service The department is writing to 110,000 charities and Community Amateur Sports Clubs (CASCs) informing them that, from 22 April, they can enrol to make repayment claims online, through the HMRC website. The new service, called Charities Online, is being introduced in response to feedback from charities. They will be able to get information on how to use the system from the HMRC website (www.hmrc.gov.uk/charitiesonline). Sajid Javid, Economic Secretary to the Treasury, said,

“Charities Online is a significant step towards reducing the administrative burdens that can be a weight on charities. Claims will be processed more quickly, as well as saving on postal costs and delays. The service will be more accurate, with built-in checks.” Separately, the Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme (GASDS) is also being introduced in April. This will allow charities and CASCs to claim top-up payments on cash donations of £20 or less without the need to collect Gift Aid declarations. Charities will generally be able to claim payments on small donations of up to £5,000 each year.

Airport gears up for busy summer despite toxic tax! GLASGOW Prestwick Airport is upbeat about its prospects for 2013 following double-digit growth in a robust last quarter. Passenger numbers were up, showing a 29% year-on-year increase for the three-month period November 2012 to January 2013. Chief Executive Iain Cochrane was

cautiously optimistic. “January’s figures represent a satisfying start to the year and the outlook for the rest of 2013 is very encouraging as we continue to adapt to the challenges of an ever-evolving industry,” he said. “Thanks to new routes and extra frequencies announced by our partner Ryanair for our summer programme, looking ahead we expect passenger numbers will continue to rise.” He added: “Our strategy of positioning Glasgow Prestwick as Scotland’s low-cost gateway to popular holiday destinations is paying off, with an increased number of flights to the Mediterranean and Canary Islands.” The airport’s confidence is based on Ryanair’s decision to increase the number of its routes to 27, while the number of flights per week increases by 10% from 86 to 95. In response, the airport announced the creation of 50 new fixed-term jobs from the end of March, in a number of passengerfocused areas. Mr Cochrane commented: “As well as sending Scots off on their holidays, we look forward to welcoming large numbers of visitors from Poland, Italy, France and Spain. In this regard, we know that the airport performs a vital role as an economic driver for Ayrshire. A recent report by York Aviation, "The Economic Impact of Glasgow Prestwick

Airport" shows that last year we: • supported 1540 jobs locally and helped boost the Ayrshire economy by almost £64m; • supported 670 jobs specifically in Ayrshire tourism; • continued to put Ayrshire “on the map” which is important in attracting and retaining inward investment in the area; • helped anchor the Aerospace and MRO (maintenance, repair and operations) cluster around the airport which shows that Glasgow Prestwick plays a key role in securing activity here. “However, our task in helping to build a stronger Ayrshire economy continues to be frustrated by the imposition of Air Passenger Duty, a toxic UK Government tax that damages tourism and weakens Scotland's competitiveness. We once had 8 daily flights to London Stansted which were well supported by Ayrshire business; now, because of the tax, we have none, depriving the business community of regular, direct, low-cost access to London markets. We therefore renew our call for the tax to be devolved to the Scottish Government so that revenues raised can support Scottish aviation and help attract new routes."

New Festival Takes Off MARKING the centenary of flying at Prestwick, the Prestwick World Festival of Flight launches on Friday August 30th and runs for ten days. With the support of South Ayrshire Council, Prestwick Airport, Prestwick Royal Aeronautical Society, the RAF Association, and local aerospace companies, the programme will be a popular mix of; air displays, exhibitions, films and performance celebrating the adventure of flight, and commemorating Prestwick and Scotland’s place in the history of aviation. The Festival will introduce the World’s first Aviation Film Festival and an Aviation Book Festival. These will be supported by music, theatre, poetry, exhibitions, song and storytelling for all ages. With emphasis on activities for families and

children, there will be something for everyone! Festival curator George Kerevan explains, “The Festival aims to complement the existing visitor product in Ayrshire and Arran by tapping into the growing international aviation heritage market. With only 5% of current visitors to Ayrshire coming from outside the UK, the festival should help reinforce this vital sector.” With long term vision for the Festival to become a major event in both the UK and International aviation heritage calendar, there is scope to create a permanent public exhibition of aircraft and artefacts recording Prestwick’s significant role in aviation history, as well as a legacy programme encouraging young people in Ayrshire to build careers in aerospace engineering, and promote Prestwick Airport as Scotland’s aviation capital.

by David Wales, Bloomingwales Florist BEING a small independent business, I had to ask myself where are the misconceptions in flowers and floral arrangements within the modern business environment. The answer is not an easy one to define. Most people associate flowers and floral arrangements with birthdays, weddings, funerals etc. and whilst this is a major percentage of the market, there is real scope for flowers in a business environment that people sometimes fail to perceive. In a modern society where customer service is paramount, businesses should be looking at what takes them from customer satisfaction to customer delight. Can flowers do this? I think the answer is yes, especially when a large portion of new and repeat business comes from referral and recommendations, the simple flower can hold the key to a customer being happy and a customer being delighted. Coming from a Customer Service environment I always refer to the simple analogy of everyone is a customer and so I look inwards to understand what would make me appreciate the service I receive and it is the little things that will take a service provided from excellent to exemplary. A floral arrangement as a thank you for new or repeat business can be the differentiator between yourself and your direct market competitor or indeed coming into a reception area bedecked with an eye catching floral arrangement sets the best first impression. Never underestimate the humble flower and what it can achieve for your business.

The Master Builder of the Year Awards, is a nationwide search by the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) to find the best builders in the UK. Apprentices set to go far! LOCAL travel agency Thorne Travel, based in Kilwinning, is one of many local businesses that are succeeding due to adopting the apprentice scheme, an initiative aimed at getting young people into employment. Owner Shona Thorne had a strong vision and determination to bring back the local high street and opened in 2009 with four employees. The business is continuing to expand with 15 staff now currently employed. Shona’s first apprentice Christina Heywood is now in her second year of a business degree in Glasgow University whilst continuing to work two days at the agency. By working with the local council, Shona has employed a “back to work” employee and another two apprentices. “It feels great to know that

I’ve contributed to improving prospects for our young people.” says Shona. This mix of staff works well for Shona, employing experienced and knowledgeable travel consultants with young locals looking to gain experience and employment in the travel industry. Shona believes that the younger generation have much to offer growing businesses, “The apprentices come with a whole different skill set; energy, enthusiasm and great computer and internet knowledge, an area that has become invaluable to the expansion of my company. Training a new employee from grass roots up ensures that standards are set and kept through the business.” The future is bright for Thorne Travel with plans to develop and diversify into the internet and student market.


Community Connections

MUNRO Partnership, Chartered Financial Planners based in Ayr, undertake a community connections programme with their staff. Staff pay a monthly amount into a community connections fund which is matched by the company. The money is then allocated on a regular basis to local charities as nominated by the staff.

Recently, the company have donated £1,400 to local charities through the fund, including £400 to Aberlour Options Ayrshire, which provides overnight respite to children and young people with complex learning and physical disabilities. Quarrier’s Homelife South Ayrshire, a housing support project supporting adults with learning difficulties to live in their own home and

to be a part of the local community, benefited from a donation of £300 and South Ayrshire Dementia Support Association was nominated to receive £150. This charity was set up by local people to provide services for people with dementia and their carers in the Ayr, Prestwick and Troon area. A charitable way to support local communities.

MJ Harrison Supplies, the sole Scottish distributor of Moore Concrete Products, regularly exhibits at trade shows including the Royal Highland show, but as Paul Harrison told Tosh Lubek, "Who wants to carry your bulky printed brochure all day but a business card alone offers limited information about us". Tosh Lubek, from Tosh Lubek Productions, suggested an alternative, the DVD Video Business

Like a normal business card it can be printed with your logo and contact information but it can also include a promotional video about your business and pdf files of your company brochure or leaflets. Both Paul and Dianne appear in their video which also features testimonials from their customers. As Dianne says, "They tell their story about working with MJ Harrison Supplies and when someone sees a real person talking about your business they can instantly tell that your client is being sincere. The effect is much more powerful than just reading a customer's testimonial."

Dianne also appreciated the versatility of their promotional video produced by Tosh, "Not only is it on the DVD Video Business Card but we could also show it on a TV display at our trade stand and put it on our website." Paul adds,"We supply pre-stressed concrete products to agricultural, construction and industrial customers and because our brochure leaflets are on the DVD our customers can view and then print the ones they need. That saves on our printing costs and is environmentally beneficial because it cuts down on total paper use." Cristina from Girvan Academy at South Ayrshire Council, Civil Engineering “ON the fourth day of my work experience placement in Civil Engineering at Burns House in Ayr I arrived at 8:35 and was introduced to the workers in the bridges department. “Around 10 o’clock, Douglas, Sandy, Stuart and I departed towards Pinwherry. We looked at a bridge that had been damaged by the large trucks that drove through it. Measurements of the ground level needed to be taken to be able to analyse the structure of the bridge from the computer at the workplace. For this purpose we made use of a theodolite, which is an instrument used to measure angles and directions. For it to work properly, it needs to be horizontally positioned with the ground and mounted on a tripod. “I really enjoyed my time at South Ayrshire Council and have learned a lot from my experience.”

The next IBMers? S3 PUPILS from Kilmarnock Academy got to see the ‘world of work’ thanks to IBM in Greenock. IBM is a global company which employs over 2000 people and favours young people who have studied a foreign language. Pupils recently toured the plant and spent time in the International Contact Centre as well as learning about the importance of studying a foreign language in today’s competitive job market. They were given a talk on how being able to communicate in a foreign language can be to their advantage when competing with other young people of the same age not only from Scotland but from other parts of Europe. It was an excellent opportunity for the pupils to practise their French, improve their communication skills and to meet French speaking employees from the company.

Education Links Engineering Design Challenge BUDDING young engineers from S2 year groups across North Ayrshire took up the task of researching, designing and making solutions to a genuinely tough engineering problem. The forty two finalists of pupils were among over four hundred taking part in the North Ayrshire Design Challenge days. The events, which kicked off in August last year, aim to encourage more young people to study and consider careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). The theme of the Challenge Day programme final this year is Remote Operations. Students work in teams to design and make a prototype device that can be operated remotely to simulate a heart and kidney transplant. Objects representing the human heart and kidney must be picked up and accurately placed in their appropriate holes in a cut-out of a human torso.

Each of the seven school heats leading into the North Ayrshire Final involved up to 10 teams of six pupils. The Design Challenge days started in 2009 with assistance from the Institute of Engineering and Technology. The event has gone from 6 teams of 6 pupils to working with over 400 pupils across North Ayrshire. John Allison, Faculty Head of Technologies at Auchenharvie Academy, said, “The Design Challenge Day programme is all about inspiring and attracting tomorrow’s engineers. Engineering is often seen as an invisible industry amongst young people. They also have preconceived ideas about what engineers look like and the jobs they do. The pupils attending the challenge days will experience hands-on, practical events to challenge their perceptions, and make them realise that engineering is an exciting, rewarding career path.”

Employ-Ability Project EMPLOY-Ability is a ‘Citizen Leadership Project’ for people with learning and other disabilities, delivering a range of training and activities focusing on confidence building, new skills, access to volunteering, work placement, employment opportunities and social networks. The project is a result of consultations showing clear evidence of the many barriers disabled people face when trying to access work and volunteering opportunities. Additional evidence confirms the multiple barriers experienced by people who have disabilities and who are ultimately isolated and excluded from mainstream society. In our society it is widely recognised that ‘work is good for you’ and has a huge impact on people’s health and wellbeing.

The Employ-Ability programme will have a positive impact on people’s lives by addressing the disadvantages that people with learning disabilities face in accessing training, work placements and mainstream employment in society. It will enable people to feel valued and to contribute meaningfully within their local community and the wider society. Critical to the project is the involvement of employers and businesses willing to support through offering work placements. Nora Senior Sets Out Business Priorities As She Takes Up Scottish Chambers Of Commerce Chair NEW Chair of Scottish Chambers of Commerce (SCC), Nora Senior, takes up the position with clear aims in mind to ensure that the organisation builds on its unique role in helping to create the right environment for business and society as a whole to flourish. Nora, who is the first businesswoman in the SCC’s 64year history to be honoured with the office of Chair, outlined her vision: “My focus for the Scottish Chambers of Commerce will be around three key themes, woven into the Chamber movement, of collaboration, connection and communication. “Each of these themes is important not only to our work in Scotland, but also to ensuring that we optimise SCC’s place in the worldwide Chamber of Commerce movement for the benefit of Scottish businesses and the Scottish economy. SCC Welcomes Continued Fall In Unemployment COMMENTING on the news that Scottish unemployment fell by 13,000 in the three months to December, Liz Cameron, Chief Executive of Scottish Chambers of Commerce, said: “It is good news that unemployment in Scotland has continued its downward trend, and it is particularly important to note that youth employment fell by 28,000 over the course of last year. This has undoubtedly been assisted by the focus on youth employment that has been evident on the part of the Scottish Government in

Events round up Our Christmas Networking was a great success. Centerstage, Kilmarnock provided their impressive space and theatre for an evening of informal networking and shopping, rounded off by an outstanding youth group who took the stage for a fantastic routine of song and dance. Thanks to Centerstage for a great night’s entertainment and to Brownings the Bakers for the delicious warm Killie Pies! The Permanent Secretary, Sir Peter Housden was our guest in December.

He was welcomed to Ayr College, Aerospace Centre of Excellence and enjoyed an interesting tour of the training centre before heading to the Hatchery at Dundonald, where he was introduced to some new and up and coming businesses. Lunch was cooked by pupils at St Joseph’s Academy, under the expert guidance and training from the CookSchool Scotland chefs. Sir Peter said, “The sessions with Business Leaders were instructive and useful, and our time at St Joseph’s was a delight – what a wonderful group of young people!”

Constitutional debate began with a breakfast session from Sir Alistair Darling MP, delivering the “Better

Together Campaign”. Over 60 businesses representatives gathered in the Aviator Suite, Prestwick Airport for a constitutional debate and discussion on the forthcoming independence referendum. The YES Campaign breakfast is coming to Ayrshire in March (see diary dates). The Marine Hotel, Troon was host to the first Networking session of the New Year. Over 30 delegates gathered in the stylish surroundings for a tasty buffet before a facilitated speed networking session. Each delegate delivered their 90 second pitch to every other delegate in the room. Thanks to the Marine for sponsoring! The Behind the Scenes Tour of GlaxoSmithKline was a “sell out”! Members had a first-hand experience of the antibiotic fermentation process in the labs of the Ayrshire plant before enjoying a networking lunch. Congratulations to GSK, celebrating 40 years in Ayrshire this year!

Proving popular, our Behind the Scenes Tour and Lunch at the Ardagh Group in Irvine was fully booked with over 40 businesses enjoying an eye opening factory tour, presentation and networking lunch. The Irvine based facility of the Ardagh Group produces and supplies glass bottles for the spirits industry. Delegates followed the manufacturing process from start to finish. Thanks to Ardagh for hosting.
