Each of these institutions is distinctive in terms of populations served, specialties taught, and engagement of surrounding communities. Many academic health center campuses are physically adjacent to their affiliated universities but not all; some are located in dense urban areas while others are suburban. Consistent among all is the commitment to health-related education, research and patient care. The overlapping relationships among these functions distinguish an academic health center from a traditional medical center.
