FALL-WINTER 2013/14

CACHAREL TRAVEL AND STYLE DIARY AMSTERDAM

Fall-Winter 2013/14

CACHAREL TRAVELER’STYLE: AMSTERDAM If traveling is in your soul, you’ll find a way to hit the road. You’ll dream of cities, bridges, museums and so many other things that even you’ll be surprised. Suddenly, you’ll find that a work trip has turned into a touristic visit, and you’ve started to wander around as if you’re discovering the unexplored parts of your soul... Peaceful, beautiful and elegant Amsterdam draws you in, especially in the fall-winter months, with its canals, cafes, European architecture from the 17th and 18th centuries and its bicycle traffic that undeniably contributes to its urban atmosphere. No matter what your reason for visiting Amsterdam, your traveler spirit will break through at full speed. It’s because there are many things to observe closely and discover in this city, which masterfully blends the traditional, elegant aesthetic values of the past with today’s liberal and functional dynamics. Museums that host some of the world’s most significant works of art, charming streets full of design shops, flavors, the boathouses on the canals and of course bicycles... Don’t be surprised to see businessmen in their suits going to work amidst this urban texture; the bicycle is an exceptionally fitting mode of transportation in these narrow streets. In a city that supports environmentally-friendly, peaceful living, the bicycle is an essential element. Amsterdam is a European city that both preserves tradition and manages to be modern in every way, yet it leaves tastes and scents from its own texture in your mind. We’ve only just embarked on our path, with many places to see and stories to tell. The Cacharel man is a citizen of the world who likes listening to stories as much as being the hero in new tales. And he knows that it is neither enough to travel a lot nor read a lot… The two must be done together so that the journey can influence others, too. We wish you an enjoyable fall-winter season with lots of traveling...

AMSTERDAM: THE CITY OF CANALS

COLLECTION CACHAREL Fall-Winter 2013/14

Amsterdam... In addition to offering all of the advantages of a big city through its canals, art museums, classical architecture, outdoor markets, underground restaurants and colorful street life, it also possesses the peace and calm of a small town. This city maintains its historic roots that date back to a small fisherman’s village as it manages to absorb modern culture, offering everything a traveler could want. For today’s stylish, world-conscious traveler who loves life and is open to innovation, Amsterdam is a city that must be discovered.

5

Andaz Amsterdam opened its doors in 2012 in a very central location right next to Prinsengracht, one of the city’s most delightful canals. The hotel is housed in a historic structure that was renovated head-to-toe and redesigned with modern touches to reflect the city’s strong culture of design.

6

I came to Amsterdam for a meeting and spent my first night here at Andaz Amsterdam, currently the city’s most talked about, tempting hotel. I sat in the lobby in my patterned shirt that references Cacharel’s history, my silk tie, and my Cacharel-classic midnight blue suit, complementing the elegance of the hotel. 7

8

prinsengracht canal I spent the couple of hours that I had set aside just for myself in my room at Andaz Amsterdam, watching the Prinsengracht Canal from the large windows. The lighting and dÊcor of the hotel were in perfect harmony with my spirit as well as with my clothes. Amsterdam’s canals are the most famous structures in Amsterdam and the Netherlands. The city is known as the Venice of the north due to its many kilometers of canals, 90 islets and 1500 bridges. Some of the best canals in the city are Herengracht, Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht. These winding canals featuring tens of small, lovely streets are located on the Unesco World Heritage List.

AMSTERDAM: A CITY WITH AN EXTRAORDINARY TEXTURE

11

An important perk of the Andaz Amsterdam hotel is that its interiors were designed by genius Dutch designer Marcel Wanders.

12

I complement the suit I chose for my meeting with my double-breasted coat. I opt for this coat often as it doesn’t ruin the form of the suits I wear.

A destination of design and hospitality in the city...

elcome to Amsterdam’s poshest hotel that’s been making a big splash lately. The building served as the Amsterdam Public Library until 2007, after which it was brought back to life with the authentic touch of Dutch star interior architect and product designer Marcel Wanders. In 2012, it reopened its doors as a hotel that enthusiastically reflects the city’s spirit, with the name Andaz Amsterdam. Andaz Amsterdam melts the city’s culture, lifestyle, traditions and heritage in a pot to offer a modern whole. All of this may sound too glamorous, yet this is a sophisticated place where ambition is hidden in the details, where design ideas are made palpable elegantly, without disturbing guests.

15

Despite its modernity and new façade with a scent of design, Amsterdam evokes a feeling of historical continuity with its incredible churches and street views that appear as if they haven’t changed much since the paintings dating back to 400 years ago. Central Amsterdam is very convenient for pedestrians who want to discover. A 45-minute walk will take you within three kilometers, from the city’s largest train station Centraal Station to the museum-dense Museumplein and the incredible Vondelpark. My plaid, slim-cut pants with leather detailing wonderfully with my turtleneck sweater, a menswear essential. My peaked-lapel coat completes the look. 16

LIKE EVERY CITY VISITED FOR THE FIRST TIME

AMSTERDAM

SURPRISES YOU AT FIRST BUT THEN ENVELOPS YOU IN PEACE

19

The city’s historic center is separated from the canals with a belt and divided into two. Most of the touristic areas are kept in this small area: like the churches, the Royal Palace and Anne Frank’s house‌

20

One of eight wooden bridges that remain standing in the city, Walter S端skind Brug passes over the Nieuwe Herengracht canal. My jacket-like seasonal double-pocket short coat, walking shoes and map join me on this expedition. 21

history and innovation nestled together What makes Amsterdam this rich and full of character is its attentiveness to preserving historical assets as well as its self-confidence in being this open to novelty. Café Papeneiland reminds me of what kind of city I’m in the minute I walk in. I feel as if I’m on the set of a movie in this corner, wearing my chino pants and my sweater in this season’s favorite color, purple.

cafe papeneiland

e

For a quick snack or extended chats over coffee...

stablished in the 1600s, CafĂŠ Papeneiland continues to be one of the most popular cafes in the city, serving customers to this day without losing any of its character. Classic Dutch flavors are offered in its rustic, dimly lit interior. This quaint cafĂŠ is perhaps the best place to browse through newspapers, have a light lunch and taste the flavorful Dutch coffee.

25

Generally speaking, Amsterdam is a city that gets plenty of rain year-round. Even in the summer months, it’s possible to fall victim to the rain and tour the city underneath an umbrella… Yet thanks to the cafes hidden on every street corner and its orderly streets with strong infrastructure, the city doesn’t leave travelers face-to-face with the cold and rain too much. I’m discovering this city amidst the canals with my Cacharel-classic textured, rainproof trench coat.

a romantic city Known for its labyrinthine water canals enveloping the city and its romantic, bohemian lifestyle, Amsterdam is one of the most authentic cities in Europe. Its street festivals, concerts, cultural events and colorful, far-from-traditional lifestyle turn Amsterdam into a center of attraction. My functional short coat with a quilted texture allows me freedom as I get to know this city. Another unique quality of the city is that Amsterdam is a flower market; the world’s only floating flower market, Bloemenmarkt, offers tens of different types of flowers from cacti to large green plants in the middle of the city. Of course those that draw the most attention are the colorful tulips. Another feature of the market is that every flower you purchase can be specially wrapped to be admitted on the plane.

30

31

Touring secondhand bookstores and exploring the experiences in these books has always inspired me. The notes and photographs that poke through secondhand books take me to different times and different lives, and through boundless imagination, I picture myself in other lifetimes. Located in Spui Square, Athenaeum Boekhandel is a huge bookstore with a rather rich foreign-language selection where you can find many books you’re searching for. What draws me in is the secondhand books section on the stands out front. I lose sense of time as I’m out on the streets wearing my functional, light coat with multiple pockets that keeps me warm.

de negen straatjes The city’s nine intertwined little streets are ambitious when it comes to design...

d

e Negen Straatjes, or the nine little streets located on the city’s nicest canals that run parallel to one another – Prinsengracht, Keizersgracht, Herengracht and Singel – right in the middle of the famous Spui Square and the Jordaan neighborhood, are full of design boutiques, small galleries, charming cafes and creative souvenir shops. An area that attracts those interested in shopping and discovery, De Negen Straatjes’ canals are also home to boathouses. Most of these boats-turned-houses floating on the canals are in fact used as homes, although some are rented out to travelers and tourists as alternative lodging. As I’m touring the streets in the De Negen Straatjes region, a flower shop quite literally pulls me in and I find myself with a bouquet of pink flowers in my hand. The treasured Dutch tradition of flowers and floristry has made its way into urban life. My leather gloves protect my hands in this sharp cold.

35

2013 is the 125th year of Concertgebouw, one of Europe’s grandest concert halls renowned for its acoustics. Home to the Netherlands’ Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Concertgebouw hosts some very important events this year. Attending a recital at this elegant concert hall is sure to be a one-of-a-kind experience for any traveler, particularly during this fall-winter season...

36

37

38

During my travels, I always keep my tuxedo with satin lapels and a velvet bowtie in my suitcase for formal meetings. I wear this suit with my 100% cotton shirt with stone-set buttons. This look is fitting both for the meeting I’ll attend tonight and for the event afterwards at Concertgebouw.

A warm and inviting city hotel...

nother one of Amsterdam’s cosmopolitan neighborhoods that’s been gaining popularity in recent years is De Pijp. Located slightly south of the city center, this colorful neighborhood is notable for its abundance of ethnic restaurants and cafes. On my second night, I chose to stay at the Sir Albert Hotel, which opened in this beautiful neighborhood at the beginning of 2013. Housed in a renovated old diamond factory, this hotel offers a laid-back ambiance. I think its two most important points of attraction are the lounge section, called The Study, which looks like a quintessential gentlemen’s club with decorative elements like the library, leather chairs and dim lighting, and its proximity to P.C. Hooftstraat, Amsterdam’s poshest shopping avenue lined with global luxury brands.

42

43

44

I’ve rested and am ready for my second day in Amsterdam. The interiors that preserve tradition offer peace.

45

My very light coat that keeps me warm by regulating heat and that is easy to carry in a bag prepares me for this long day of walking. You’ll find city maps with walking, bicycle and bus routes separately defined at the reception desks of just about any hotel, whether five-star or much smaller. It’s a good idea to get lost in the streets to discover the city freely, but don’t be deprived of the feeling of security you get from having a detailed map in your pocket! 46

de bakkerswinkel

t

A must-visit for breakfast...

hanks to its menu of healthy foods for breakfast and the rest of the day, as well as its authentic retro design, De Bakkerswinkel is one of Amsterdammers’ favorite eateries that managed to open up branches all around the city and even the country after the success of its original location on Warmoestraat. It’s tiny and not at all touristy. A characteristic feature that’s common to all branches, the large reading table in the middle is the perfect place to enjoy breakfast items like the organic jams that go well with the flavorful scones. It’s a pleasure all its own to start the day here together with Amsterdammers. Some are about to leave, while others will lounge around here all day, being lazy. I, on the other hand, will hit the streets like I did yesterday!

49

It’s possible to traverse the whole city from one end to the other on a bicycle. This is what I plan on doing today. I’m wearing a vest that doesn’t limit my movements and is perfectly suited to riding a bike. But first, breakfast! Amsterdam’s top traditional flavors are baked goods, cheeses and of course potato dishes prepared in various ways. Yet you can also taste international flavors in this cosmopolitan city. The most successful among these is Indonesian cuisine… Don’t forget to try this rich cuisine in one of the Indonesian restaurants all around the city.

54

In the 13th century, Amsterdam was a village on the mouth of the Amstel River as it poured out to sea. Now, it hosts millions of tourists on its canals each year as one of the world’s most beautiful cities. The capital of the Netherlands is also home to some of the world’s best-kept historic legacies. 55

56

Each part of Amsterdam was designed to protect nature and make life easier. Public transportation and bicycle are the main modes of getting around, while the trams are both punctual and spacious. Just about every road in Amsterdam leads to Dam Square. In fact, the minute you think you’re lost, you find that you’re actually walking toward Dam Square. This region is the central area of the city, surrounded by splendid architectural works… My coat whose fur hood I can remove whenever I want is a profoundly good choice.

Normally, leather jackets aren’t carried or worn in cities like Amsterdam where you spend all day walking along the streets, yet this flexible and functional nubuck jacket with multiple pockets is both light and comfortable.

rijksmuseum One of the Netherlands’ most valuable assets...

t

he Rijksmuseum is one of this city’s most valuable assets that reopened to the public last spring after a 10-year restoration project. Considered one of the best art museums in the world, the Rijksmuseum is also located in Amsterdam’s Museum Square. After leaving here, I will visit the Van Gogh Museum, famous for the never-ending ticket line in front of it, and the Netherlands’ national modern art museum Stedelijk Museum.

63

64

One of the liveliest areas of the city, Rembrandtplein gets its name from the Rembrandt statue located in the square. A popular destination especially for tourists, the square features many restaurants, cafes and hotels. In front of the Rembrandt statue surrounded in greenery, there are 22 bronze figurines inspired by Rembrandt’s De Nachtwacht. When touring this extremely photogenic city, it’s essential to have a good camera with you. I feel like a true photo-journalist with the double-sided vest that’s easy to combine with other clothes and delve into the beauties of Amsterdam with my lens. This vest is so easy to use that today, I wore it on top of my classic-cut jacket.

65

flavor, color, texture Amsterdam offers everything a lively traveler interested in exploring could want‌

a

msterdam is full of surprises for today’s energetic, tireless traveler who is curious to explore, passionate about culture and arts, and who loves both city life and nature. The city is home to one of Europe’s most rooted urban textures with an abundance of structures left from the 17th century. The old part of the city consists of intertwined, moon-shaped canals. 2013 is also celebrated as the 400th anniversary of these canals being built.

66

67

68

Despite being a port city, among European capitals, Amsterdam is one of the places where the harsh cold is most palpable and the air is driest. What you’ll need here for fall and winter months are a light, long, fur-lined coat and leather gloves to keep you warm.

bistrot neuf A French bistro in a cosmopolitan city...

b

istrot Neuf opened its doors several years ago to become one of the best French bistros in Amsterdam. It’s remarkably appealing and rich, not only because of its warm, relaxing atmosphere and lighting that evokes long conversations but also due to its menu. In recent years, it’s become a favorite spot for those who want to experience the sophisticated flavors of French cuisine in an atmosphere that isn’t so serious and stuffy. It welcomes the city’s attractive, young working crowd, particularly on weekend evenings. I feel as if I’m experiencing the elegance of both day and night thanks to the navy velvet jacket I’m wearing. As I chat with the venue’s chef, I feel like I’m somewhere right in the middle of Dutch and French cultures.

75

76

I’m wearing a slim-cut suit as I’m doing a little research in the hotel library prior to my last dinner in the city. The plaid tie lends an air of both elegance and dynamism. Just like Amsterdam, it’s both classic and innovative…
