hua hin, THAILAND The AWOL Mail Survey has now finished, and we would like to thank the readers who responded. The results are fairly unsurprising for most who have lived here for any length of time, and only one respondent had what could be described as positive comments, with a huge majority having experienced major problems with their mail. Most respondents complained of mail taking either several weeks to arrive or worse, not arriving at all, for both incoming and outgoing mail. Some were sympathetic to the staff with comments about the organisation, staff levels and the actual building being inadequate, and both the sorting and delivery mechanisms are regarded as inefficient - several respondents said that they rarely have the same postman, and many commented on the state of the sorting office, with it variously being described as ‘chaotic’, ‘messy’, ‘cluttered’ and other similar remarks. Many also suggested that the standard of English ability of the staff could be a major reason for the problems with mail addressed in English. It was encouraging to note that few believed any missing mail was due to theft. AWOL cannot influence what happens at the Post Office, but we can advise our readers to be careful when sending mail, and to consider other options for both sending and receiving mail; for example there is a private mailbox service available at the Lucky Real Estate office at Makro (Soi 4), and international courier services will deliver and collect. This however does not address the problem of regular incoming mail, such as bills or bank statements, and we strongly suggest that anyone experiencing problems complains not only to Thailand Post, but also to the organisation sending the mail you are expecting or receive late.

stories money makes the world go round By Roger Norwood A regular chore for most expats in Thailand is dealing with getting hold of their money in bank accounts outside of the kingdom without facing excessive charges or hurdles. There is also the matter of watching the exchange rates, which in some cases can differ wildly both between their home country and here, as well as from week to week. It seems that currently the Thai baht is starting to slide against many currencies, something that many people feel is long overdue, and while many expats will get excited about the prospect of getting more baht for their Pound, Dollar or Euro, how much better off they will be is subject to some question, as

a weaker baht will make imports to Thailand more expensive, and chiefly the most important of those is oil, which would feed into higher prices for virtually everything. Other expat delicacies from home would also rise, although on the flip side, given the experiences I have had since the pound plummeted against the baht, prices for international air travel are likely to fall when originating from Thailand - the most feasible explanation I have heard regarding the current differences is that the landing fees in Thailand became much more expensive due to the strength of the baht, so we can only assume that this would reverse should the baht weaken significantly, but it shouldn’t be a big surprise if it doesn’t!.
Back in the heady days of 75 baht to the pound and 40 baht to the dollar, flights originating in Europe were considerably more expensive than those starting in Thailand, and many expats, myself included, made the decision to get a one way ticket and from then on buy returns from Thailand, which was fine until about three or four years ago, when the situation flipped. The point of my ramblings this week is that we really should be careful what we wish for, unless we are in a position to play both sides of the currency exchange game, which most expats I know are not. In the short term your afternoon beers may become cheap again as the baht slides, but in the long term, probably not.

tennessee, usa Bit of a bummer: Woman hospitalised after removing stolen $5,000 from her rectum A Tennessee woman has been hospitalised after she tried to remove $5,000 (£3,226) from her rectum. Christie Black had stolen the cash from her boyfriend and put it in her ‘hiding place’, before she was injured trying to remove the money. The 43-year-old reportedly used a toilet brush and tongs to try to pry out the stolen goods, but ended up ‘bleeding severely’, according to police. Black is charged with theft and an arrest warrant has been issued after Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office was called to the home she shared with boyfriend Bobby Gulley when the incident happened. Mr Gulley complained that she was stealing from him after he had ‘set a trap’ to see if she would take the cash he had placed inside two envelopes, in a medicine bag. He said he left the medicine bag on a foosball table and went to bed. When he woke up he found the money was missing and Black was still awake. Mr Gulley confronted his girlfriend who allegedly vomited up a bag of slightly dissolved pills and confessed to wrapping up the cash and sticking it in her rectum.

Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas
bum deal Growing up in a city like Hull, once a major UK fishing port, brought with it an unquestioned acceptance of the traditions associated with the fishing industry. One of those traditions was tattooing, and in much the same way as Royal or Merchant Navy sailors would have their own style of tattoos done, so did the trawler men. Tattooing was seen almost as a right of passage. Possibly as one way to try to ensure that seafarers could be identified should their ship go down, or perhaps just to demonstrate that boys were ready to enter the world of what was very tough and dangerous adult work. Looking back now it is clear that there was a hierarchy and symbolism in the style of tattoos. Naval officers would have the most elaborate and expensive, often depicting the insignia of their ship, while most trawler men would have an anchor tattooed on one earlobe, together with the almost obligatory heart and arrow on one arm, and names ranging from ‘Mum’ to Doris - or whoever they happened to be married to at the time. What they all had in common was a distinct lack of creative artwork. What they didn’t have in common was how tattoos were perceived back on dry land by potential employers. The shortage of labour in the immediate post war years in the UK
left no room to discriminate against what were then perfectly acceptable signs of military service (and were in any case usually covered) and ex-naval officers almost automatically got jobs in the Civil Service or Local Government. But by the 1970’s attitudes had changed. Woe betide anyone with a visible tattoo who wanted a job in catering, or even retail work. Employers felt that customers didn’t want to see tattooed staff, and there were plenty of ‘clean’ applicants to choose from. Fast forward to the 2000’s and a new generation of expertly tattooed and often very successful professional bodies has emerged. The Beckham full sleeve tattoos haven’t detracted from his appeal as a role model - or as a model for underwear, and may even have helped him. After all - we need something other than a pair of plain white knickers to look at, and tattooing is now an accepted and respected form of art. So we shouldn’t really be surprised by Cheryl Coles’ newly decorated derriere, which is reported to have taken 15 hours to complete. A wild underestimation if ever I heard one, and a true testament to the Chelsea flower show. At least Cheryl will still be able to get a job at MacDonalds should she ever need to, and can now put her own interpretation on those old lyrics ‘I never promised you a rose garden’.

The Cha-Am and Hua Hin Hash House Harrier Clubs meet alternate Saturdays for around an hours run/walk in the countryside followed by a social gathering with beer, soft drinks, water and snacks then later to a nearby restaurant for a meal.
