There is an old, humorous chestnut that states, “A transvestite is a man who just wants to eat, drink, and be Mary.”

The concept of males dressing up as women is as old as the hills, and rationalizations for doing so are as diverse as the cultures from which they spring.

In 1950’s America, famed television comedian, Milton Berle, tickled America’s funny bone by dressing up in drag and spoofing the gender factor in a variety of hilarious sketches. And though Berle appeared in various drag personas, his “Auntie Mildred” character skyrocketed to the forefront in popularity!

In one hilarious, but daring, drag sequence, Berle dressed in a beautiful, formal bridal gown, and took his place alongside a man in full formal tuxedo, both preparing to exchange their sacred wedding vows before a minister! Did mainstream 1950’s America recoil in disgust?

Quite the contrary, many suffered from spasmattacks brought on by uncontrollable bouts of laughter, sending “Uncle Miltie’s” television ratings high into the stratosphere!

Such surprising gender-bending skits helped make Milton Berle’s “Texaco Star Theater” television show unique, and certainly a galaxy away from being just another common, garden-variety comedy show!

Berle was no longer just vaudeville-funny. He was no longer just (generically) funny.

His popular drag sequences became the uncensored X-factor that made early television hugely unpredictable and edgy, for its time! Especially when dealing with forbidden taboos, such as men dressing up in women’s clothing, and making it “acceptable fun.”

As stated at the top of this article, men dressing up as women is certainly nothing new. Some just did it better than others! Julian Eltinge (born William J. Dalton, 1881-1941) was the top female impersonator in early 1900 American vaudeville. He is the only drag performer to actually have a Broadway theatre named in his honor!

In his very first job in the legitimate theater, legendary movie actor, James Cagney, performed as a female impersonator in a revue titled, “Every Sailor.” It was a popular concept. As James Cagney put it, “Female impersonators were the rage at the time, and every vaudeville show had one on the boards.”

But audiences are fickle. What’s popular today, may not be so tomorrow. And also, what vaudeville and burlesque presented on stage may not be “presentable” for television families across midAmerica and the U.S. Bible Belt.

Milton Berle’s timing was immaculate. The resurgence of popularity for buffoonery in drag was at hand, and Berle would ride this wave of popularity like no other!

However, television was an experimental industry, still in its infancy. Censorship was in place. This new visual media called television

was not the bawdy stage of vaudeville or the British music halls. A performer had to be a tight-ropewalker, walking that fine line between acceptable family values and bathroom humor. Unlike vaudeville and burlesque, sex, nudity, and obscenity were not to be tolerated. Lewd and indecent material may reward you with deafening laughter at vaudeville’s old Palladium Theater and a renewed contract – the same material would be a television death sentence!

Though a raucous and seasoned vaudevillian, himself, Milton

His unsurpassed comedic genius, together with a bit of tight-rope-walking for the censors, all parlayed into his colossal success on this new medium called television!

And no one did it better than Uncle Miltie. But, he remained daring. He could push the envelope better than anyone – and he did!

Milton Berle’s drag sketches were both visually daring and groundbreaking to a television audience of both children and adults.

Apparently, Berle put adequate “lipstick on the pig” to allow his drag humor to fly in the face of homophobic, ultra-conservative social conventions of a 1950’s America!

As television historian, David Zurawik, puts it: “His drag characters were beloved by 1950’s America, which is kind of funny.”

Such excursions into the crossdressing skits were considered ‘aggressive’ television for its era.

As historian, Zurawik, further states: “These shows were pitched at an aggressive level: anythingfor-a-laugh! This also tended to make his programs very visual.

Audiences across the country wanted to see what Berle would do next, and he quite obviously thrived on this anticipation.”

It is not necessary to state that Milton Berle’s television success was predicated on many factors, and certainly not exaggerated on his drag scenes, alone. But, as previously stated, it was, without question, his dressing up as a woman that was by far the most startling and unusual for America’s early traditional values and folkways!

And so it came to pass.

Milton Berle’s “Auntie Mildred” character soon began opening his show and before Auntie Mildred could even speak his first scripted words, his drag persona was often rendered mute by uncontrollable waves of disruptive laughter from the live studio audience! And though it is true that Berle’s mother, Sadie, was a “plant” who encouraged audiences to laugh along with her own was never really required. Nevertheless, Berle used her piercing laugh to zero-in with his prepared dialogue. When the last decimal of her laugh subsided, Berle would say, in full women’s make-up: “Look lady, you’ve got all night to make a fool of yourself. I’ve only got an hour!”

Again, Milton Berle’s success as a standup and sitcom comic was enough to power up his career without the drag vignettes.

However, it is equally true that you give the audience what they want, and his Auntie Mildred was, by far, his most popular alter-ego which kept his audiences (live and through television) happy and laughing!

As a consequence, Milton Berle’s show soared to unprecedented ratings! So much so, that he has been credited for selling millions of American television sets, thus earning him the sobriquet: “Mr. Television.”

It is no exaggeration that Milton Berle’s “Auntie Mildred” drag persona became a favorite among American television viewers.

Berle’s show was eagerly anticipated every Tuesday night and by 1954, more than 26 million American homes had at least two television sets!

Milton Berle’s popularity on television bordered on the unbelievable. “He is reputed to have sold more television sets than any advertising campaign.” (Official statement from The Museum of Broadcast Communications.)

How popular were Milton Berle’s appearances in drag, specifically?

Well, so popular was the cross-dressing formula that the torch was quickly picked up by other comedians, all of whom found that they had their hand on the public’s pulse as far as knowing what they liked. And playing

Comedian Flip Wilson found his comedic career to skyrocket when he dressed in drag for his widelypopular “Geraldine” character. So popular was “Geraldine” that British news reporter, David Frost, could not interview Flip Wilson’s drag character without, continually, breaking down with laughter!

Others followed the yellow brick road, which seemed paved in real cross-dressing gold! RuPaul salvaged his career in drag to the point where he found himself a popular attraction on the widelyviewed MTV network.

Major motion pictures jumped in early with such cross-dressing bonanzas as in the 1950’s film, “Some Like It Hot,” starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, and Jack Lemmon (filmed at the legendary Coronado Hotel and beach, 1959). Others followed, all mega-successful: “Victor Victoria,” starring Julie Andrews and James Garner (1982), “Tootsie,” with Dustin Hoffman (1982). And the entire world fell head-over-heels in love with “Mrs. Doubtfire,” starring Robin Williams (1993), as well as “The Birdcage,” again with Robin Williams (1996), along with Eddie Murphy’s “The Nutty Professor” and its various sequels!

There are, as of this date, nine “Madea” movies with more on the way! In 2011, Forbes Magazine officially named Tyler Perry as the highest paid man in entertainment! It is ironic that the highest paid man, became so because of the “woman” he portrayed (“Madea”).

But these were all comedic ventures. Transplants from music halls, burlesque, vaudeville, and television. Such cross-dressing was done with exaggerated flair, along with the ridiculous and buffoonery riding along, sidesaddle!

But suddenly, something odd, something hugely different came into worldly-view, via motion pictures, that was unlike its predecessors! We’re not talking about “underground” films that are relegated to anonymity and remain unknown to the planet’s population.

No, something gigantic splashed upon the collective consciousness of the world that was like no other, before or since. It emerged as the first, seriouslysuccessful cross-dressing major motion picture! And it proved to be a monster hit, globally! It was the first to capture the highest critical praise from around the world from the most powerful members of the print and visual media!

Methodist Church to Host 28th Annual Bethlehem Walk – Local congregation tells the living story of Christ’s birth in a renowned holiday tradition.

The First United Methodist Church (FUMC) of Escondido will host the annual holiday tradition of the Bethlehem Walk on Friday, December 11th to Sunday, December 13th, at 341 South Kalmia Street, Escondido. Each year, members of different congregations of local churches, come together to plan, develop, construct and deliver the town of Bethlehem as it was thousands of years ago. Free to the public, visitors are invited to experience Bethlehem Walk, a re-creation of the traditional birthplace of Jesus, set in the time of Caesar Augustus, the Roman Emperor who decreed that a census be taken and set in motion the

For one brief, shining moment, a cross-dressing movie ceased being the poor, lowly cousin with a cheap burlesque pedigree, and walked, majestically, onto centre stage, in the spotlight, before the biggest international gathering of humans, numbering in the( billions), all watching live on television!

In the annals of men dressing up as women, there has been nothing quite like “The Crying Game” before or since. It may never happen, on that level of achievement, again.

But, where is the genesis for cross-dressing? When did this whole ordeal begin?

Would you believe that the concept of males dressing up as women goes back as far as the Vikings?! Yes, you heard me correctly. The Vikings, the virtual personification of all that is masculine!

History records that Viking and Norse mythology contain crossdressing episodes! (“Viking” and “Norse” both refer to the Germanic people living in Scandinavia at the time of the Viking Age. Norse mythology is (primarily) written in North Germanic language.)

But hold onto your skirt, or trousers. Cross-dressing extends far back to ancient Greek and Roman mythology, as well! Ditto, the ancient Hindu culture: “Arjuna crossdressed as Brihannala and became a dance teacher.”

Ancient China and Japan, as well as most other cultures, have episodes of crossdressing in their respective histories and/or mythologies.

Although not in the same arena of discussion as “cross-dressing,” the similar area of sexuality found in the Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner saga, cannot be completely ignored. To be more precise, the Caitlyn Jenner affair has captured world

event we now celebrate as Christmas: the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem. Visitors become part of the nativity story as they make their way through the walk. During the three-night production, every member of Bethlehem Walk is played by an all-volunteer cast. Bethlehem Walk tours begin every five minutes during designated times: Friday, December 11, from 5:30-8:55pm; Saturday, December 12, 4-8:25pm; Sunday, December 13, 4-7:55pm.

headlines, as well as record-high television ratings! That humans wish to be inquisitive on such proceedings is, certainly, their divine right. As such, it is highly democratic to give the people what they wish to know.

In the Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner scenario, there is an associated branch of cross-dressing, or transvestism, which deals with surgical intervention, such as breast augmentation, etc. In this case, the emerging Caitlyn Jenner is physically altered so as to be more than just a person cross-dressing into women’s attire, or vice versa.

However, the erstwhile Bruce Jenner follows a long line of predecessors! Lili Elbe (1882-1931) was a Dutch transgender woman, born in Denmark, died in Germany. She is considered one of the first (identifiable) recipients of sex reassignment surgery. The year of her sex change was 1930, in the country of Germany.

Others followed suit, such as American, Christine Jorgensen (1926-1989), who was born in the Bronx, New York, and whose sexual reassignment surgery took place in Denmark, in late 1952.

Jorgensen’s sex-change was highprofile news, worldwide, and the most famous to that time. The first surgeon to perform sex reassignment surgery within the United States was Dr. Elmer Belt (1893-1980).

Prior to the Christine Jorgensen sensationalism in the world press, Dr. Belt was quietly performing sex change operations for a number of years! He performed primarily male-to-female operations, although he did also perform a few female-to-male procedures!

Only after suffering from family pressures did Dr. Belt stop performed sex change operations in 1962.

On Monday, November 23rd shortly after 5 pm the Carlsbad Police Department and Carlsbad Fire Department received a report of a traffic collision involving a pedestrian and a motor vehicle near the intersection of Jefferson Street and Marron Road.

The Carlsbad Fire Department located the traffic collision on the Jefferson Street bridge over Interstate 5.

A 67 year old white male pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The male pedestrian was crossing the street from the east curb line of Jefferson Street towards the west curb line of Jefferson Street when he was struck by a pick-up truck travelling south bound on Jefferson Street.

The pick-up truck was driven by a 51 year old male from Carlsbad.

The body of the pedestrian was released to the medical examiner.

The identity of the pedestrian is not being released until next of kin can be notified.

The Carlsbad Police Department’s Traffic Division was called out and the investigation is ongoing. Alcohol and/or drugs do not appear to be a factor in the collision.

Hit and Run Accident, Escondido

On Saturday, November 28th, at about 7 pm, officers from the

Escondido Police Department were dispatched to the area of Grand Ave and Broadway regarding a serious injury collision involving a vehicle and a bicyclist.

Upon arrival, officers found an unconscious female lying in the eastbound lanes of Grand Ave east of Broadway. The female sustained significant, life-threatening injuries and Escondido Fire transported her to Palomar Hospital for treatment. The identity of the female is unknown at this time.

According to several witnesses and physical evidence at the scene, it appears the bicyclist was riding northbound on Broadway and was hit by a car heading eastbound on Grand Ave. The car never stopped and fled the scene.

Through their investigation, officers believe there may have been a possible witness who has further information regarding the involved vehicle.

The traffic investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by Officer Stephen Braucht of the Traffic Division. Anyone with information on this case is encouraged to call Officer Braucht at (760) 839-4482.

Yes, it was Thanksgiving Week and business may have been heavier than normal ... but that should have been planned for and at least one additional cook should have been on staff to keep up with the demand.

It’s a good restaurant with good food ... but this was not good planning.

Man About Town

More and more often I’m finding that I compare the level of service I get at restaurants to Charlie’s Restaurant in downtown Escondido.,

It’s not fancy. It’s a nice clean, family type restaurant - the wait staff all know us and we know them . . . we’ve become good friends with Charlie Mitich, the owner.

We never have to wait long for our order to arrive. Wait staff pretty much knows what we’re gonna order ... and the cook staff turns the food out smartly.

Last Wednesday we went to a well known restaurant that specializes in omelets. Wait staff was attentive and pleasant, food was tasty . . . but I believe it was 30 minutes we had to wait to be served. There were two cooks and appeared to have sufficient

I don’t think it’s because everyone knows us there either; the waitresses at Charlies almost run from table to table . . . one wonders how they have all that stamina! All patrons appear to get the same great service we do. Food is always good at Charlie’s, as are the prices.

Other local restaurants where service is generally prompt, food is good and prices reasonable, include J&M, Pegah’s, Jalapeno Grill, Dominics ... among others.

(These are places where we dine fairly often. There may be others that meet these standards but we simply haven’t been there yet.

Evelyn ordered the Honey Chicken, I had Chicken with Young Ginger Sauce. Both were delicious but I sampled some of Evelyn’s Honey Chicken. I’m ordering that next time. (Don’t forget dessert. The Coconut Ice Cream is out of this world!)

Throughout the evening we enjoyed the crooning of Peter Marin, the “Jazz Club Singer” who has years of experience singing in a variety of top venues.

Peter Marin is a protege of Andy Williams, has worked with a number of major artists, including Ray Charles.

He blends interesting show biz stories into his presentation, balanced with soft, relaxing standards . . . even the up tempo ballads are relaxing.

Aubrey Stewart, a retired computer instructor and technician, is a big jazz fan and had invited us on several occasions to the Northern Spirits Lounge but we always had other commitments.

On this evening we were free and were delighted we were.

Great food, great music, great company. Our thanks again to Aubrey, his companion and friend, for a wonderful evening!

Is it just me or is anyone else bamboozled by the new “automated” bill paying plan offered by the city of Escondido Utilities Department?

I tried to log on to their website and followed instructions.

Didn’t work. Three separate times. Called the Escondido Utilities Department . . . on hold for 20 minutes. No answer. 20 minute waits on two separate occasions on the same morning.

Constant recorded voice messages reminding me I could go to the new third party website and easily register to pay bills. NO! You cannot. And people don’t answer phones at the Utility Department . . . only recorded robots. Frustrating!

Someone at city hall needs to fix this. Now. ••••• Rose Bowl anybody?

The Pillsbury Doughboy died yesterday of a yeast infection and trauma complications from repeated pokes in the belly. He was 71.

Doughboy was buried in a lightly greased coffin. Dozens of celebrities turned out to pay their respects, including Mrs. Butterworth, Hungry Jack, the California Raisins, Betty Crocker, the Hostess Twinkies, and Captain Crunch. The gravesite was piled high with flours.

Aunt Jemima delivered the eulogy and lovingly described Doughboy as a man who never knew how much he was kneaded. Born and bread in Minnesota, Doughboy rose quickly in show business, but his later life was filled with turnovers. He was not considered a very smart cookie, wasting much of his dough on halfbaked schemes.

Despite being a little flaky at times, he still was a crusty old man and was considered a positive roll model for millions.

Doughboy is survived by his wife Play Dough, three children: John Dough, Jane Dough and Dosey Dough, plus they had one in the oven. He is also

survived by his elderly father, Pop Tart.

The funeral was held at 3:50 for about 20 minutes.

If you smiled while reading this, please rise to the occasion and pass it on to someone having a crumby day and kneading a lift.

We went to the movie the other night. I sat in an aisle seat as I usually do, because it feels a little roomier. Just as the feature was about to start, a blonde baby boomer from the center of the row got up and started working her way out.

By the time she got to me, I was trying to look around her and I was a little impatient, so I said, "Couldn't you have done this a little earlier?”

Their new church complex sits on a five-acre campus above the southeast corner of South Melrose Drive and Cannon Road. The campus will have a sanctuary with seating for more than 1,000 people, a chapel, a plaza, a meditation garden and a Stations of the Cross garden. A blessing and Mass of dedication is scheduled for Dec. 16.

Father Michael Ratajczak, who has served as the church’s pastor since 2003, will preside.

The Rev. Robert W. McElroy, bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego, will celebrate the first Mass at 2 p.m. Dec. 16 and bless the church, liturgical furniture and art. A reception will follow immediately after Mass on the church grounds.

Public Library’s “Holiday Food for Fines” Program - Escondido Public Library’s annual Holiday Food for Fines Program runs now through Thursday, December 31, 2015. The program provides Library patrons the opportunity to clear up to $20 in fines from their account. Proceeds benefit Interfaith Community Services in Escondido which distributes the food to families in need throughout the North County area.

Non-perishable, nutritious, pre-packaged items such as canned goods, pasta, sauces, and peanut butter credit up to $1/worth of fines per item. Non-nutritious, perishable, expired, or damaged items cannot be accepted.

A Mixed Bag for Business

Legislative report cards have just been released by CalChamber, the Southwest Riverside Legislative Council, and the Howard Jarvis Taxpayer’s Association. As a result of my votes to support business, create jobs, rein in taxes and streamline regulations, I am happy to report I received an “A” from all three!

California’s economy has been slowly rebounding for several years. Though still too high, our official unemployment rate has fallen, we no longer run yearly multi-billion dollar budget deficits, tax revenues are up.

Even so, much work remains.

This year dozens of bills impacting the economy were debated in Sacramento.

Among the bills identified as “Job Killers” by CalChamber: I opposed AB 465, which would have prohibited pre-dispute employment arbitration agreements authorized by both the California and U.S. Supreme Courts. The bill was vetoed by the Governor.

I opposed SB 406, which would require small businesses with limited numbers of employees

New Store in New York City

A store that sells new husbands has opened in New York City, where a woman may go to choose a husband. Among the instructions at the entrance is a description of how the store operates: You may visit this store ONLY ONCE! There are six floors and the value of the products increase as the shopper ascends the flights. The shopper may choose any item from a particular floor, or may choose to go up to the next floor, but you cannot go back down except to exit the building!

Who Was Horatio Alger?

We’ve all heard the phrase, “His life was a real Horatio Alger story.” Just who was Horatio Alger and what does that saying mean?

Horatio Alger., Jr., was born Jan 3, 1832, in Chelsea, Mass.

He was a prolific 19th-century American author best known for his many juvenile novels about impoverished boys and their rise from humble backgrounds to lives of middle-class security and comfort through hard work, determination, courage, and honesty. His writings were characterized by the "rags-to-riches" narrative, which had a formative effect on America during the Gilded Age, hence the phrase “… a real Horatio Alger story.”

10:16 p.m. to report hearing gunshots near an apartment complex on East Felicita Avenue near South Juniper Street Gang detectives responded and are investigating a shooting that left two teenagers injured on an Escondido street Sunday night.

One of the victims told police the shooter got out of a teal-colored Nissan Titan in the parking lot of the complex and shot in their direction before taking off, said police Sgt. Jim Lanigan.

Both men, ages 18 and 19, were hit and drove themselves to the hospital. Their injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

The shooter was described as tall, thin and wearing a black leather jacket over a gray hoodie.

Fatal Shooting in San Marcos

On Friday, November 20th, a 14year-old boy was fatally shot on a San Marcos street.

The boy was identified as Brandon Gonzalez, who lived in San Marcos.

Residents near De Leone and Hollencrest roads reported hearing gunshots about 10:50 p.m.

Many of his stories lifts the young hero, not by hard work, but by bravery, honesty and sheer luck. The boy might return a large sum of lost money or rescue someone from an overturned carriage, which brings the lad … and his plight … to the attention of a wealthy individual.

By 1868, Alger was known nationwide through basically his fourth novel, “Ragged Dick,” the story of a poor boot-black's rise to middle-class respectability. This book was a huge success, as were many of his tomes that followed, all with essentially variations on “Ragged Dick” … the usual character saved by a mysterious stranger. Also, the young man puts up with a snobbish youth, who often is an evil, greedy rich boy. Eventually, the “Ragged Dick” series would consist of 12 installments.

But by the 1870s, Alger's stories were growing stale. His publisher suggested he tour the American West for fresh material to incorporate into his fiction, but a trip to California had little effect on his writing: Alger remained mired in the tired "poor boy makes good” theme.

The backdrops of his novels merely changed to the American West rather than urban New England.

Later, Alger moved to New York City where he wrote "Friar Anselmo,” and he did try adult novels. Two were published with poor reviews, “Helen Ford” and “Timothy Crump's Ward.”

He fared better with stories for boys published in the periodical “Student and Schoolmate,” and a third boys' book “Charlie Codman's Cruise.”

In the last decades of the 19th century, Alger's moral tone coarsened with the change in boys' tastes. Sensational thrills were wanted by the public. The Puritan ethic had loosened its grip on America, and violence, murder, and other sensational themes entered Alger's works.

Public librarians questioned whether his books should be made available to the young.

But with the first decades of the 20th century, interest in Alger’s writing was renewed and his novels sold in the thousands.

By the time he died, Alger had published some 100 books.

Since 1947, the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans has awarded scholarships and prizes to accomplished people. In 1982 to mark his 150th birthday, a Broadway musical, “Shine!,” was based on Alger's work, particularly the characters, Ragged Dick and Silas Snobden's office boy.

an American ophthalmologist, and is among the most celebrated cases of transgender women in history. As is common with most transgender women, Raskind began, cross-dressing sometime during college. What catapulted Renee Richards into the world spotlight was her quest to compete in professional tennis matches as a transgender woman! Prior to Richard’s sex reassignment surgery, he competed on the professional tennis ranks as a male.

After his male-to-female surgery in 1975, the transgender Renee Richards sought to compete in the female tennis ranks in 1976, but was denied by the United States Tennis Association, which barred Richards from competing in the 1976 U.S. Women’s Open. The high profile litigation finally was resolved when the New York Supreme Court stunned the world by over-ruling in her favor. In this landmark decision on August 16, 1977, Judge Ascione found in Richards favor by declaring, “This person is now a female.”

Judgment further declared that denying her entry into the U.S. Women’s Open was, “grossly unfair, discriminatory and inequitable, and a violation of her rights.”

Though allowed to compete in the U.S. Women’s Open, Renee Richards lost to Virginia Wade in the first round of the singles competition.

However, Richards advanced to the finals in the women’s doubles.

Soroptimists Hear Program from Cancer Survivors - Soroptimist International of Vista hosted three

Today, at age 81, Renee Richards resides in a small town just north of New York City. It was in New York City where Richards was raised, in her own words: “As a nice Jewish boy.”

The longstanding legacy of ‘when boys just want to be girls,’ is a highly volatile road, filled along the way with animosity and love, hatred and acceptance, Biblical damnation and admiration. And because of all of this, it is often a harsh journey for the lone traveler, and onlookers quickly line the sides of this road and often select their allegiance for-or-against.

And some merely stand by the wayside and observe in a neutral zone.

Earlier this year, I spotted something interesting, and poignant, in The Paper (a lot of things are interesting and poignant, beyond this particular item.) Anyway, this item was not an advocate for any cause, or anything like that.

It was merely a very inspiring insert. It was a photo of a black man, named Cory Booker, from Newark, New Jersey. Alongside his photo were these words, inscribed as his own: “Before you speak to me about your religion, first show it to me in how you treat other people. Before you tell me how much you love God, show me how much you love all His children. Before you preach to me of your passion for your faith, teach me about it through your compassion for your neighbors, In the end, I’m not as interested in what you have to tell or sell as in how you choose to live and give.”

ovarian cancer survivors from The Ovarian Cancer Alliance of San Diego’s H.E.A.R. program at a recent meeting. The topic was “Ovarian Cancer: If only I knew then what I know now.”

H.E.A.R. (Hope, Experiences, Awareness, and Risks) recently received a $10,000 grant from a Soroptimist club in Coronado to expand their speaking program.

“Our hope is that women will benefit from experiences and the knowledge we have gained from our personal cancer journeys,” said Cindy Silver, a 7-year survivor of Stage IV ovarian cancer. The group emphasized that women need to be aware of their bodies, know the symptoms and risk factors, and be their own advocates to get care in a timely fashion because doctors sometimes misdiagnose and dismiss symptoms, delaying treatment. Tree Trimmer Killed in Valley Center

Deputies found the boy lying on a sidewalk, unconscious, with a gunshot wound to his chest, sheriff’s homicide Lt. Kenneth Nelson said.

A 30-year-old Escondido man, working as a tree trimmer, was fatally struck by a car in front of Valley Center High School on Tuesday, November 24th.

Deputies started CPR on the teen and medics took him to a hospital, where he died, Nelson said.

Pastor Richard Huls, (Retired) Fear Not!

With the terrorist massacre in Paris, the world has been put on alert to be ready for more of the same. People are cautioned to not be in big crowds, avoid transportation centers, and be alert for unusual activity. In some European countries, there is even the suggestion to not leave their homes unless necessary. Here in America, a retired Naval Officer was quoted in a recent Time Magazine article that we can expect a similar, if not worse, terrorist attack. The entire world is afraid. How do we face it? What can we do?

The Christmas story in Luke 2:10 gives us hope. On the night of Jesus’ birth, an angel proclaimed, “Fear not, for I bring you good news of a great joy which shall be for all the people. For unto you is born this day a Savior, who is Christ the Lord!” That message has permeated the darkness of wars, famines, plagues, depressions, disease, death, and, today, even the terrorist threat.

In the midst of the carnage, not only on Paris, but in much of the world, there is a message of hope and salvation from the God of creation. It is the angels’ song of glad tidings that evil will not rule, but God will, with a call to “fear not.” It is a refocus from the fearful news of an insidious force of evil that seems to have no conscience or room for civilized human values to a belief that there is a God of justice, love, and peace who has given us this hope in Jesus Christ.

Fry’s, Staples, Best Buy and other big box stores often have eye-popping ads for super cheap PC “specials.”

When you ask to see the “special,” you’ll find the sales person eager to show you something else. They’re on commission and the “special” pays them peanuts. Their job is to “bait and switch” you to a pricier system. If you insist on the “special” you’ll get a very tepid response or be told, “We just sold out of that model.”

Hardly anyone goes out car or house shopping with the plan to buy the cheapest product on the market. If that were the case we’d all drive a “Smart Car” and live in a “single wide” in Hemet.

Workers from Davy’s Tree Service were trimming trees along the shoulder at the time. The tree trimmer walked into the southbound lane and into the path of the Sierra, the officer said. The driver was unable to stop in time.

The driver of the Sierra remained at the scene until deputies arrived. They performed CPR, but the worker died before he could be taken to a hospital.
