Belgo Comics #2023 [EN]

News from independent publishers of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation (Belgium)

Building on the success of its four previous issues, Belgo Comics is back in 2023 to present the latest publications of the independent publishing houses from the French-speaking community of Belgium. These publishers are proud of the originality of their catalogue and of the specificity of their readers. They share common points:

a vision of their profession as being a demanding cultural operator, concerned above all with the development of the art of comic strips, in all its diversity;

an unfailing curiosity, a concern to experiment, to explore the limits of the medium, to connect it with other arts, or to enhance its heritage;

attention to the quality of the works, their content, but also their material aspect. These publishers offer a large majority of long-term publications, for which interest is maintained over time;

an international outlook, through editorial partnerships and the publication of authors from various countries, while remaining firmly rooted in Belgian cultural reality.

Micro-edition has a strong presence too in this edition of Belgo Comics, with a pool of dynamic and changing collectives. Their fanzines and book objects, whose core content is focused on drawing and narration, are the witnesses of an innovative creation always concerned with moving lines.

Frémok was born in 2002 from the merger of Fréon and Amok, two independent publishers who in the 1990s dug the furrow of an experimental comic strip form, in which storytelling through image prevails. Frémok seeks to question and renew the comic strip medium, notably by using other artistic practices and techniques that are not usually associated with it:

woodcut, metal engraving, painting, chalk, sculpture, etc. Frémok presents works that explore the margins of graphic narration, investing in the political, strange and poetic fields, a comic strip in which the reader is invited to perform an act of creation.

AURÉLIA AURITA

Collection For intérieur

An unvarnished autobiography, an erotic confession both raw and tender, a report on contemporary life across the continents, a feminine look at things sexual, but above all a fresh and brilliant comic book.

A beautiful book with impressive iconography. A goldmine of discoveries on a little-known period of the history of comics. This album is a trailblazing publication, combining first-class scholarship and an exceptional and lavishly reproduced set of totally unknown images.

The mutations of the famous Franco-Belgian twentieth-century publisher, from the arrival of Hergé to the development of graphic novel, via Martine. Relying on rich and never studied company archives, Florian Moine tells in a lively and rigorous way the hectic history of a major publishing house.

A superb poetic and sensual graphic novel. A suggestive and dreamy world with new ways of seeing the body, both desired and desiring, of becoming sensitive to the play of light and dark, of crossing known and unknown boundaries. Romain Renard’s drawings immediately create a powerful and endearing atmosphere.

LE DESSABLEUR

20 years after the last issue of Préambulle, the Belgian Comic Strip Center is launching a new quarterly:

Le Dessableur. The aim of this magazine is to shed light on subjects and comic strip authors that are rarely, if ever, discussed by the museum itself. Le Dessableur, instead of dealing with themes that are

already widely covered by other magazines, unearths rare subjects that it entrusts to specialists. Reflections on the form and content of contemporary production, evocation of forgotten and founding works and exclusive pages created for the occasion form the editorial line of the magazine.

Comics are one contemporary form among others. La 5e Couche holds it and its readers in high regard. Everything comic-related is of interest to 5C and tends to distance it from them. Its field of action is,

by definition, porous and unlimited. 5C acts. 5C fosters the conditions that make creation possible. Its manifesto is its books.

The Maison Autrique in Brussels is one of the first works by architect Victor Horta. For a century, it remained a private home. This important milestone of heritage owes to comic strips its complete restoration and opening to the public. Indeed, the imagination of the Cités obscures ― the cycle by F. Schuiten & B. Peeters ― presided over the rebirth of the building. Starting from this concrete example, we have imagined comic books dedicated to heritage in all its forms. Support Kronikas in celebrating a universal heritage that belongs to the whole world and that allows people to grow together, side by side, thanks to the message of peace conveyed by images and writing.

Kronikas is a publication dedicated to cultural heritage in all its forms, but more especially to the fictions and reveries that emerged from the relationship one has with its architectural, musical, social, historical environment… Kronikas invites you to an imaginary inventory.

Du Noir Sous les Ongles is a small independent publishing house founded in Brussels in 2019. Specialized in lithography and documentary comics, it also publishes collaborative fanzines and generally any project the team feels like doing.

L’APPÂT

L’appât is an artisanal print shop located in downtown Brussels, founded in 2013 by Rebecca Ann Rosen and Quentin Pillot. L’appât publishes handmade books and posters in limited quantities using silkscreen and letterpress techniques.

The artists are invited for a residency at the workshop, in order to print a work in which they master all the stages of production. This represents a first approach to artisanal printing for some of them. L’appât’s productions are the result of a collaborative effort between artist and printer.

DITIONS

En 3000 éditions proposes to put collective dreams on paper, ideas and possibilities for a better life together, stories of hope for a different life on our planet. En 3000 éditions offers fiction to escape from reality, fiction to make room for the imaginary, and fiction to reinvent reality.

En 3000 éditions explores narration as a free adventure, drawing as a contemporary experience, and comics as an independent struggle. Beyond the collective dimension of the Forgeries comic magazine project, En 3000 éditions opens its collections to new authors.

ESPACE DE LITTÉRATURE ILLUSTRÉES (E.L.I) & LES ATELIERS DU TONER

E.L.I ABSL has been bringing together the actors of Brussels’ graphic creation since 2017.

The association is established in the Camille Lemonnier house, and hosts the Ateliers du Toner (a collaborative printing space), but also the Paratoner (a mobile bookshop), printing residencies, exhibitions, a book shaping space, a meeting room and an open library.

The machines of the Ateliers du Toner (mainly Risograph, laser and Comcolor) print and shape all types of publications, from posters to fanzines, artists’ books, photo books, graphic poetry, comics and illustration.

During these workshops, the authors can therefore get hold of the entire book production process independently, and learn collectively on professional equipment. It is not a “printing shop” where you place orders, but a studio of self-learning to publish your own works.

The Paratoner is a mobile fanzinothèque/bookshop that travels from festival to festival. It shows the richness of Belgian micro-publishing with the works of some sixty artists, collectives, illustrators and comic book authors.

What is micro-publishing?

It is a selfmade paper publication with a small print run, produced independently from creation to distribution by the authors themselves.

The artists or collectives are often close to their audience and distribute their creations from hand to hand, without going through a classic publishing network.

Ranging from fanzines (small photocopied booklets, generally inexpensive) to artist’s books, micro-published objects are full of confirmed or novice authors, alone or in groups, and offer great freedom in their content and form. This type of handmade publishing is always an original creation for each work.

The desire of our association is to promote, discover and give space to fanzines and micro-publishing, as it is at the heart of our workshop.

This is why the Paratoner stand now includes a “rotating stand", featuring four new young collectives who come from different Belgian cities.

You can discover this year :

— Fémixion (Bruxelles);

— Que scay je & Triple sec (Tournai);

— BDC (Liège);

— Mardi Soir (Bruxelles).

SEC COLLECTIF

The “triple sec” is a cocktail base, which can be found at a very reasonable price in supermarkets. It has been used on many occasions during festivities between students of the Tournai Beaux-Arts school. The whole thing is spiced up with various binders to

make a very suitable drink. This principle is applicable to comics: individuals are brought together under a common banner, hence the cocktail, the collective emulsion, well you get the idea, don’t you?

Femixion is a feminist science fiction fanzine founded in 2019 by a collective of 4 creators (Morgane Somville, Loriane Panel, Laureline Mahéo and Marie Baurins). The fanzine is about thirty pages long, printed and assembled at the Toner workshops in Brussels.

Each issue of Femixion is built around a theme and brings together comics, illustrations, texts and photos by contributors who all bring into question the patriarchal system and gender stereotypes.

MARDI SOIR

The story goes that every Tuesday night a group of people gather in the print lab of a school called the ERG, their laughter and dismal cries echoing through the cold corridors. One can sometimes find obscure books that have survived those terrible Tuesday nights, among empty beer bottles and the paper cutting machine. These surviving editions are then col-

lected and presented at various events. The members of this tiny group do not hesitate to use all means at their disposal to express their love of printing, whether it be silk-screening, risography, engraving, sewing, ink printing, laser printing, or even sometimes with their tears. Maïa

BDC

BDC is a participatory sequential art and narrative experimentation fanzine.

Since its creation in 2018 under the name ̏Bruit d’Couloir˝, the main goal has been to bring together very diverse authors, thus creating a community, a network, to promote collaboration between artists. The project was born from Mai Nácher and Maxime Gillot during their last year of studies at the Academy of Fine Arts of Liège. They sought to create a publishing space where their own works and that of their colleagues might exist. The identity of the BDC is the desire to be a platform for all its artists, regardless of their experience.

MAI NÁCHER ET MAXIME GILLOT

This year for Angoulême we are launching a special issue featuring a dialogue between two authors: the diàlogo. Each author chooses a word, and the book consists of two stories built from these two words. “Troubled” and “blurry” are the two concepts that will take our sequential wanderings to a new place.

BLOW BOOK

The BLOW BOOK is a popular book, thanks to its price (5 euros), its size (7.6 x 11.6 cm), the diversity of its contents (local & international, old & new), the specificity of its articulation (one drawing per page) and its circuit (automatic distributors). Eight titles are already available: JIU-JITSU by Alfred Mazure (first issue, by the creator of the format), SALARYMAN by Dimitri Piot, NUIT SUR L’ALLEMAGNE by Carl Meffert, AU TRAVAIL ! by Manuel, LA COMÈTE by Maxime Gillot, RECHERCHES by Lucien De Roeck, PLUTON by Quentin Roux and AUTOPSIE D’UN DÉPRESSIF by Jean Bourguignon.

Blow Book

This book is dedicated to Pévé, alias Philippe Vanden Driessche (1950-2017), the creator of La plus mauvaise BD du monde published in the newspaper SPIROU between 1983 and 1987. This BLOW BOOK was made this summer during a residency at Le Vecteur, workshop located in Charleroi. Editorial team distilled 224 pages of Pévé’s best, from the 45 boxes of archives miraculously preserved from dispersal. What was not bad enough was discarded. The artist remains to be discovered! Special edition limited to 300 copies.

The size of a deck of cards, a BLOW BOOK is composed of 224 pages. It strips comics down to their essential articulation: one image per page. Its catalogue features contemporary creators rubbing shoulders with older creations, both local and international. They are sold through vending machines, the BLOW BOOK DISPENSER, at the popular price of 5 euros. Machine distribution allows for a decentralized access to culture and reduces the distance between authors and readers. Instead of a robot offering solid or liquid sugar, BLOW BOOK proposes food for the mind. More information on its different titles here:
