thomas’ story “Since starting at the college in September 2013 the support I have received has been brilliant. After having an issue outside of college I spoke with my Performance Manager, who helped me as much as she could before getting me in contact with Colette Norbury who’s in charge of the Change Your Mind scheme. Over a period of twelve weeks she helped me understand myself and how to change negative thoughts to positive thoughts. This is such a good scheme and has really helped me progress!”

Whatever your goal you will need good English and Maths to get there. Employers tell us that they need people with good English and maths skills. If you haven’t already gained your GCSEs in both English and Maths at grades A*-C, you are required to continue working towards them in some way in order to progress onto further courses and into employment. It doesn’t matter if you stay at school or go to any college, the requirements will be the same across the whole country from September 2015. The great news is that we have a variety of routes for you to improve your English and maths skills, starting exactly where you are. You may be advised to take a Functional Skill qualification or, if you already hold a D grade at GCSE, you can take one of our

A LEVELS NOT THE ONLY ROUTE TO UNIVERSITY LEVEL 3 VOCATIONAL COURSES – your route to university, college, foundation degrees and the world of work. It is often thought that the automatic progression from GCSE is A Levels, but for some that’s just not the right path. At Abingdon and Witney College we understand that each individual learns differently. With so many alternatives designed to suit the learner as well as fitting in with industry requirements, it’s no wonder that more and more students are turning to vocational qualifications. Our Level 3 courses are equivalent to A Levels and are perfect for students who have a strong inclination toward a particular vocational career and who want to go to university. Our Level 3 Extended Diploma courses, which are the equivalent to 3 A Levels do not include examinations, but are entirely coursework based with some practical assessments or work experience, unlike A Levels. Some learners may be concerned that their progression to university might be compromised by completing a vocational

qualification rather than the traditional A Level, but Level 3 vocational qualifications are recognised by all universities. At Abingdon and Witney College we have state of the art facilities as well as fantastic teaching and our Level 3 students have gone on to complete degrees at highly prestigious universities including Kings College London, University of Bath, University of Exeter and Edinburgh University. Looking to the future As well as Level 3 vocational courses, we have a fantastic range of other courses including marketing, management and other professional courses as well as access to HE courses. So no matter where you are in your career we’ve got something for you. To find out more about these courses, pick up one of our Higher Education or Part Time course prospectuses or visit our website at www.abingdon-witney.ac.uk.

“I started the BTEC Performing Arts Course in September 2012, and I have recently left this outstanding two year course with a grade of DDD*. I attended Cokethorpe Independent Secondary School in Witney and was strongly torn between taking A Levels in sixth form or persuing something I just thoroughly enjoyed. I decided college was the best choice for me and haven’t looked back.” Connie is now a student at the BodyWork Company Dance Studios – Performing Arts Academy, which is one of the leading 20 performing arts colleges in the country.

“Leading institutions cAN no longer afford to ignore sixthformers leaving school with qualifications such as BTECs, following a dramatic surge in vocational study rates over the last decade.” Mary Curnock Cook, UCAS

Apprenticeships

“Strong and well-established partnerships benefit students and the local community.” – Ofsted, Jan 2014 16

abingdon-witney.ac.uk

Apprenticeships

The ultimate employment preparation Apprentices really do get the best of both worlds. On the job you earn a wage from day one and gain valuable practical experience in your chosen profession. At the same time, you continue your training and education, gaining recognised industry qualifications such as NVQs (QCF) and technical certificates such as BTECs or diplomas through the college.

Making it work for you You will have your own programme of learning designed to suit you and your employer. Learning is often work-based; however you may come to college on day release, block release or receive oneto-one tuition. You will get great support from your College assessor who will meet you in the workplace, as well as with your employer to ensure they are providing you with the best possible learning environment. Your apprenticeship will start at a level that suits you, either Intermediate (Level 2), or Advanced (Level 3). Entry requirements vary depending on the industry and qualifications involved so it’s worth getting in touch with an adviser to find out more. With a programme taking an average 1-2 years to complete, the most important thing is that you have a passion and determination to succeed in your chosen industry and new career.

F1RST CHOICE for your FUTURE

gemma’s story Gemma Kinchin Level 3 Design Apprentice “I started my apprenticeship with the Marketing team at Abingdon & Witney College and it didn’t take long for me to settle in and start helping to produce artwork for the college. Within my first few weeks I had started to help move the brand on from last year and came up with some designs that were taken forward into future prospectuses and collateral print material.

Where will an apprenticeship take you? Apprenticeships are a great first step on the career ladder but the benefits to you don’t stop there. You will have real work experience, qualifications and employer references that will set you above the rest when applying for jobs in the future. At the end of your apprenticeship you could continue working and progressing up the career ladder, move up to a Higher Apprenticeship (Level 4/5), or even go on into higher education at college or university.

Apprenticeships available in: • Accountancy • Business Administration • Customer Service • Design • Engineering • Greenkeeping • Horticulture • IT Software Web and Telecoms Professionals • Laboratory Technicians • Marketing • Motor Vehicle • Retail • Sales and Telesales • Sports Turf

Getting this kind of experience has allowed me to establish a great foundation for my career and a portfolio full of examples of work that had been used and made in a real working environment. As I was coming to the end of my course I spoke to the college’s careers advisers about my next steps and I decided to progress to higher education. I am now studying a BA (Hons) in Graphic Design with Oxford Brookes University.”

“The course has taught me many new skills I never knew I had. In the two years of being on the course I have explored new specialisms I didn't know I was capable of being good at! It has opened a variety of potential new career paths. If you asked me at the start of the course I would never have said I wanted to study fine art at university. The trips abroad have been breath-taking, and the trips to art museums meant we could expand our knowledge on artists we may never have heard of. Overall I have thoroughly enjoyed the course and also made some friends for life.”

Abby has a severe strain of cerebral palsy which means her head and body movements are compromised. With guidance from our Speech and Language Therapist, we booked an ‘Eye Gaze’ clinic. She was able to complete a series of tasks with intentional eye pointing. The impact of this system allows Abby to make choices, communicate her needs and have control over her college day.

Darren is in his final year at college on Pathway 5. He has achieved a range of qualifications in maths, English, ICT and independence. He is moving on to do a traineeship, to help him get a job. “The best bit about college is seeing old friends. In college I enjoyed doing Maths, English, ICT and Sport with my teachers.
