e all remember the frenzy the country was thrown into when we were to host the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Now take all that put it all in, not one country, not one city, but in one university campus. Starting to get the idea? This is what our University felt when we were announced hosts for the virtual SAE Supra 2013. Preparations started a week in advance. The volunteer corps was drawn from 2nd, 3rd and 4th year SAE student members under the able guidance of officials from SAE. They left no stone unturned in ensuring that the judges were comfortable and fairplay was maintained. The effort by our volunteers was greatly admired and appreciated by the judges and contestants alike. Supra SAE aims at design and fabrication of a weekend enthusiast autocross formula type vehicle in conformation with the constraints as stated in the problem statement. Before actually manufacturing the vehicle, any SAE competition first requires the teams to present judges with an action plan and convince them that they can actually achieve what they plan for. The volunteer leadership was drawn completely from the Baja team senior members. This event saw wonderful instances of Baja and Supra team members bonding over shared feeling of anticipation as the Baja members had

already been over all the same feelings when they waited for their results in their virtual round. One got to see so many different teams from different parts of the country come up and battle it out. We got to see a range of emotions as teams checked their results: Some rejoiced while some went back sadder but wiser, yet some had to cut short their celebrations because they slinked down to lower position on the leader board (this time they had live score updates projected on screens) after the team following them returned from the panel rooms. When it was time for the team representing KIIT University, Hermes Racing, to go to their trial by fire, everyone waited with bated breath. It was indeed a wonderful surprise when the leader board showed Hermes Racing with the highest score! Not that we had not expected a good performance from our team but no one ever expect a team out on its debut endeavour to score the highest amongst teams which were out on their 2nd or 3rd outing, a mix which included the feared Camber Racing from SRM University and the team from MCKV College. The results took team members by surprise as well. In appreciation for the successful management of the event SAEINDIA presented KIIT with a huge black forest cake with the

icing saying it all. In the celebration that followed, it was great to see Prof. Isham Panigrahi, the man behind it all, so happy. The judges, mostly hotshots from the automobile industry, were also very happy with the event management, the team’s performance and the college as a whole. After the final results of the two day event were shown in the auditorium while the theme song of the event, On to Victory by Pratik Dash (2nd yr MCA), played on the background, the event came to an end and it was time to bid adieu to new acquaintances and friends, mostly from other colleges: who came, who saw and were conquered.

hey say experience is the best teacher. The current Baja SAE Team KIIT seems to have enough of that as they gear up for SAE Baja 2014. Currently in its third edition, the team is a mix of

experienced seniors and motivated juniors. The team has already qualified in the virtual round, a fact not at all surprising, given the experience, expertise and theoretical soundness of the senior members of the team, who in the previous editions of the competitions had propelled the team to qualification under their seniors.

Manufacturing of the vehicle began in earnest early this December. Team members can be seen slogging it out day and night as they break their backs to get the work done on schedule. The team is known for its ant colony like discipline. Once the vehicle is ready, it is expected to be launched amidst a lot of fanfare with local and national media covering it and the honourable founder of the university gracing the occasion.

SAE AERO DESIGN 2014

S

ince it is concerned with all technology which are related to the mobility industry, SAE also conducts Aero Design in the USA and Brazil, a competition which tests engineering skills of University students in designing and fabricating aircraft. Last year (2013), two teams had represented KIIT University in this event and both had made the country and the university proud by achieving good ranks.

SAEINDIAKIIT

Now these two teams again gear up for 2014 and hope to get nothing but a pole position finish as this is their second outing. KIIT Arihant shall participate in the regular class at SAE AeroDesign East to be held at Marietta, Georgia while the other team, KIIT Aero, shall participate in the micro and advanced categories in SAE AeroDesign West to be held at Texas. Designing had started early this month and fabrication is expected to finish by the end of January.

pogeio, the Aeronautical wing of the SAE Collegiate club, aims at promoting the aeronautical culture in the university. So on the 25th of August, 2013, it organized an air show cum aeromodelling competition. The event had two segments: an air show and aeromodelling. We had professional aeromodellers from Kolkata and Bhubaneswar who came and showed their wonderful flying skills on aircraft of their own making. We also had our honourable founder gracing the occasion. He even tried his hand at flying an aircraft, with Mr. Palash Paul guiding him. The Registrar, Joint Registrar and Vice-Chancellor of the University had also come. There was also the aeromodelling section where junior students were taught basic aeromodelling and the crafts they had made were made to fly. The aircraft that flew were judged on the basis of flight time, smoothness of take off, smoothness of landing and maximum height reached. It was indeed a great sight, so many aircraft in the sky; most importantly, those which were handmade. All teams had been provided with the same materials, the chiefly corrugated plastic, which was used to make most of the aircraft. The event was a success and was attended by many students.

DELTA SHOOT-OUT

N

ow there is something attractive about an ATV raising dust on a dirt track. On one hand we have the Baja SAE while on the other hand we have Delta Shoot-Out. To be conducted at and by NIT Jamshedpur, this competition is pretty much like Baja. It requires competitors to fabricate an ATV following the rules stated in the rule book for the international Mini Baja. It is to be held from January 23 to January 25, 2014.

8

Quad Bike T

he team involved aims at making a 4 wheeled, handle-bar controlled all terrain bike. They are a indeed a pretty imaginative bunch as they say they have implemented their own handle control mechanism for the bike. Usually quad-bikes are mono suspensioned at the rear but this one has double suspensions at the rear. The chassis design of the quad bike is their own. The quad sports double disc brakes and a 220cc engine.

It Is a competition to bring out and enhance good engineering approach and practice for graduating and diploma students of engineering. The Championship is basically to design and fabricate a Go-Kart in extremely low budget followed by a Championship of the selected teams. This Championship will consist of several tests and tasks to be performed by the vehicle and qualifying the same will decide their existence in the Championship. All the participating teams will be having creativity and innovation flexibility with few restrictions mentioned in the Rule Book. The Championship gives teams the chance to demonstrate and prove both their creativity and their engineering skills in comparison to the teams from other Universities across the ASIA. International Go-Kart Championship 2013-14 is strongly inspired by the SAE events. The team consists of 15 members. They had successfully cleared the virtual which was held on Nov'13 at LPU, Punjab. The Dynamic events are going to held on March 28, 29 & 30th.

HYBRID BIKE: Compres -sed Gas & Electric Power

T

he team aims at designing a hybrid 2 wheeler vehicle which would have two power sources: one running on compressed gas and the other on electrical power. Not only this, they also plan to make the vehicle self-balanced. YES! You read that right: it would be a 2 wheeler which would stand on its own, i.e., without the need for stands. They shall make use of gyroscopes to achieve this end. As of now they have made a prototype using a bicycle frame and have only worked on the compressed gas power plant, but we expect them to complete the whole fabrication pretty soon and it would indeed be quite a fascinating thing to behold.

FOUR WHEEL DRIVE The first outing the university ever had in an automobile competition was Baja SAE. The first team had made a prototype before they got down to the actual vehicle. While they went ahead with the new vehicle, junior students decided they needed to know how vehicles worked. So they studied up on automobiles and decided to convert the old prototype, which was a 2 wheel drive to a four wheel drive. They planned to get an engine from an old Maruti Omni and a transfer case: all that the junkyard had to offer. They did it and even showed it in the Republic Day parade! The vehicle was an object of curiosity as everyone assembled at parade grounds flocked around it to get a glimpse of the ‘curious thing they whipped up in their lab’. While the students involved are now members of teams representing the University at various national level competitions, the vehicle itself now serves as a guinea pig for any motivated inquisitive kid who thinks he has an idea.

HUMAN POWERED VEHICLE

he team involved made a solar car which runs on 2 hub motors of 250W each synchronized by a controller of 250 W 48 V rating. It has 4 cells of 12V each and 4 solar panels to charge the battery of 80 W 12V cells. This vehicle is primarily charged by the rays of the sun but as an alternative, when the sky is cloudy, it can also be charged by an external port. The vehicle, resembling a golf cart, had carried the honourable founder when had come for the flagging off ceremony of the vehicle and had pretty much impressed him. Not only him, even Tata Power, when they saw this design, were very impressed and had even asked for the same concept for their intra campus transport vehicle! Now that is indeed a matter of great pride.

T

he American Society of Mechanical Engineers is going to conduct a competition at IIT Delhi which aims at making an eco- friendly, human powered vehicle with the minimum cost.

The team delegated by KIIT is christened ‘Ketav’ and is making quick progress. It going to be a three wheeled entirely covered all weather single passenger vehicle. They also plan to integrate a sophisticated mobile charging port and make it an ideal vehicle for long distances. The team claims it can adapt to any road condition and can give an average of 35 kmpl. All this in the shoe-string budget of just Rs.9000. The team aims to fabricate a vehicle which shall be eco friendly and shall replace the IC engine run vehicles which, in the coming years, shall be difficult to own as prices of fossil fuels sky-rocket. The competition is from January 17 to 19, 2014.
