ACCENT ON

The music department of Avila University presented Handel’s Messiah at their annual winter concert. The concert was conducted by Dr. Tom Stolberg, music artist in residence, and featured all four ensembles along with special guests among Avila’s faculty, staff, alumni and friends. To commemorate Avila’s 90th anniversary, 90 singers performed this timeless masterpiece.

Avila Students “Plunge” into Service for Others

Avila University is committed to providing students with a values-based education through scholarship and service to others. The first opportunity for Avila students to experience service is the annual event called the “Community Plunge.” First-year students participate collectively in a service project that benefits the global community. This year, students worked to benefit Harvesters – The Community Food Network. Students repackaged donated food to be distributed to local pantries and members of the greater Kansas City community. “The Avila University mission and values are an integral part of the college experience at Avila. They are integrated into all aspects of the students’ education and provide them with the tools necessary to be leaders in the community,” said Sr. Marie Joan Harris, CSJ, Ph.D., provost and vice president for academic affairs. First-year student Juliet Valle joined nearly 300 Avila students, packaging 86,767 pounds of food at Harvesters, which equaled 66,744 meals.
