I’m glad to welcome all the participants and guests of BIOFACH 2019 – the leading international trade fair for organic products. This international exhibition is the most important platform for meeting producers, suppliers and consumers of organic products. It’s a great pleasure for me to see that in 2019 the Ukrainian organic business presents its products at the National Pavilion for the sixth time. The number of our participants is steadily increasing: in 2017 we had 15 companies represented, in 2018 – already 20, and in 2019 we proud to have 50 Ukrainian organic producers at our national pavilion. Actually, both the number of participants and the area of our pavilion has increased, and this is the reflection of the sector development in Ukraine: the number of organic operators is growing annually, as well as the products portfolio is getting more and more impressive. Ukraine currently exports organic products to more than 40 countries of the World. In 2018 producers created two new organic product lines - dumplings and vareniki with meat (national Ukrainian pierogi). Additionally, we are the first producers of certified organic sugar beet in Eastern Europe. Ukrainian organic producers are already successful at European markets, but we have an ambition to become the real World organic hub within the next 10 years. Our organic operators are innovative, they are open for cooperation, new challenging projects implemenation and creative ideas realization in this sector. Ukraine is open for your businesses, for your investments and we are open for organic! I wish all the participants of BIOFACH 2019 fruitful work during the exhibition and new contacts with potential partners, but I also wish all of us a very successful and sustainably growing organic business worldwide! --Olga Trofimtseva, Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine on European Integration

We are glad to welсome you at the Organic Ukraine Business Hub! The National Pavilion of Ukraine is being presented for the 6th time in 2019 at BIOFACH World, but newly as the Organic Ukraine Business Hub (#OUBH). This year Ukraine is showcasing the sustainable development of the organic market and public-private partnership shaping the image of our country. For the first time, the National Pavilion is funded mainly by the Ukrainian business. That’s why we decided to change the format and made it brand new, focusing on “transparency” with minimalist interactive open space design, but in contrast offering our visitors a highly topical business agenda followed by a varied entertainment program. We are proud to host this year a record variety of organic products presented by the main operators of the Ukrainian market: more than 400 items of certified crops, livestock, beekeeping, seeds and fertilizers, as well as grocery products, etc. For days two and three we prepared a hard-driving program for our visitors. At ‘Grains & Brains Made in Ukraine’ Forum we are holding debates and discussion panels with Ukrainian manufacturers, public authorities and government officials, as well as NGOs, international technical assistance projects and certification bodies. We are also thrilled to be the first to present the top Ukrainian AgriTech solutions for the global at Biofach. We are waiting for you at Pavilion 4A-511. Keep an eye on the biggest yellow-blue national flag for all the time of Biofach and you definitely won’t miss us. You can find more info about us and all our activities at BuyOrganic.in.ua Let’s Buy Organic in UA! --Dmytro Tytarenko, Coordinator of the OUBH, CEO&Founder of Agroportex.Bio

BIOFACH 2019

6TH YEAR – FLIGHT IS AGRARIAN! Brand New Ukrainian National Pavilion

- Organic Ukraine Business Hub (OUBH) was presented at the final agro event in 2018, within the framework of Agroport East Kharkiv. On the one hand, the organizers focused on promoting this trend direction, and on the other hand, these are the new steps for the new AGROPORT project preparation outside Ukraine, from which its sixth season will start together with organic producers at BIOFACH 2019 exhibition. From 2019 the organizer of the National Pavilion is Agroportex. Bio. The company was established as a separate direction on “Development of the organic market of Ukraine and promotion of organic products made in Ukrainian” in 2017 within the framework of the project “Agroport Ukraine”.

The high level Ukrainian policy delegation headed by the Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine for European Integration Olga Trofimtseva goes to the Biofach 2019. Mission objectives are the following: participation at the international organic tradefair Biofach, presentation of Ukraine on the international level, building long-term partnership both with policy makers from other countries and with organic stakeholders, as well as participation in activities of the Ukrainian National Pavilion. Ukrainian policy delegation participation at the Biofach is supported by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO, Switzerland) and the Organic Ukraine Public Union of producers of certified organic products and organized by the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL, Switzerland). The project “German-Ukrainian co-operation in the field of organic agriculture” implemented by AFC/IAK and funded by BMEL also partly finances the organisation of policy meetings.

International promotions are provided in the opportunities for the specialists in organic chemistry not only to present their products and improve the image of our country but also to generate increased profits. “BIOFACH 2019 is an excellent opportunity for the specialists in organic chemistry and the country that exports both raw materials and finished products of high quality to be presented,” said Olha Trofimtseva, Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine on European Integration during the press conference titled “February is a start of sixth agrarian super-season for Ukrainian business”, which was held on December 18 at Ukrinform (Ukrainian National News Agency). Now we have a lot of programs for agrarian importers and agrarian exporters, and practically all leading world brand dealers of machinery and equipment are the partners of our bank. Moreover, he promised to surprise the National Pavilion visitors with the biggest flag of Ukraine sizing 5x14 m, setting an international record. We should remind that this year organizers have set two organic records of Ukraine - buckwheat porridge with mushrooms weighing over 3 tons at AGROPORT West Lviv 2018 and Organic Honeypie weighing over 100 kg presented at Agroport East Kharkiv 2018. REHEARSAL OF BIOFACH 2019 IN KHARKIV What Records to Expect from Ukraine in Germany? Agroport East Kharkiv 2018 October 11–13, 2018 International Airport Kharkiv

Organic industry leaders from all over Ukraine visited AGROPORT in Kharkiv, among which were participants of the National Pavilion of Ukraine at BIOFACH 2019.

General Manager of AGROPORT Ukraine and OUBH Coordinator, Dmytro Tytarenko noted that organic products took a special place in AGROPORT program in 2018. “We focused on the promotion of trend niche products on the one hand and we are making all necessary preparations for a new AGROPORT project outside Ukraine targeted at promoting Ukrainian producers at the international exhibition BIOFACH 2019 on the other hand” – said Dmytro Tytarenko. For instance, panel discussion ORGANIC UKRAINE BUSINESS NUB was held on the first day in the main hall where an updated format of the National Pavilion was presented and practical recommendations for participants training for the event were discussed.

‘‘

Ukrainian products proved to be competitive and tasty, and I’m sure they will receive a wide response from both European consumers and consumers from around the world

“The main goal of the panel is to meet participants who will represent the national organic market next year and to review the possibilities that will help to prove ourselves in the international markets,” – said Olena Berezovska, President of Association “Organic Ukraine”.

BIOFACH (biohach.de) is the world›s leading exhibition for organic products held in Nuremberg. Agroportex.bio has hosted the National Pavilion since 2019. The company was established in 2017 within the Agroport Ukraine project activities as a separate direction on “Ukrainian organic market development and promotion of organic products made in Ukraine”. This is not by accident that the new format of the National Pavilion of Ukraine - Organic Ukraine Business Hub (OUBH)- was presented within the Agroport East Kharkiv project at the final agro event of 2018. Next year, the organizers plan to step away from the traditional static expositions and focus on “openness” - interactive open-space with minimum accumulations and minor details but with a varied programme.

The panel was also visited by a special guest Director of Nürnberg Messe, Official Representative Office, Hubert Demmler, who could evaluate not only the progress in preparation activities by the Ukrainian operators for the BIOFACH 2019 exhibition but was also directly involved in the Ukrainian exhibition-forum activities. “Ukrainian products proved to be competitive and tasty, and I›m sure they will receive a wide response from both European consumers and consumers from around the world,” - said Hubert Demmler. This year organic products were one of the key issues for discussion at Agroport East Kharkiv 2018. Organic Ukraine Avenue has been open at the airport for two days, where certificated products were presented by the manufacturers from different parts of Ukraine.

The first day of the exhibition ended with an official celebration of the 5th anniversary of AGROPORT in restaurant-resort Dubrovsky, which organically fit into the preparation program. The opening ceremony started from the new collection “Praska” (“Iron”) (2L Factura brand) presentation by designers Lana Teslenko and Olena Horbacheva, as a part of the collaboration with the Fashion Festival “Kharkiv Fashion”. Distinctive features of the Ukrainian traditional costume sewed with natural materials were used as a basis for this collection. The first nominee for organic producers was established within the framework of the AGROPORT AWARDS, traditional awarding ceremony of the regional agrarian industry leaders. The official programme was ended with the drawing of air tickets from Turkish Airlines to the BIOFACH 2019 exhibition, and the lucky winner was identified by the Director of Nürnberg Messe, Official Representative Office - Hubert Demmler. But that wasn›t the end. What is the anniversary without cake?! Particularly, without a record organic Medovik (Honey Cake) weighing over 100 kg. We spend more than 40 kg of sour cream, 24 kg of sugar, 323 chicken eggs, 14 kg of flour, 10 kg of cream and 6 kg of honey etc. for its cooking. The cake was inspected and certified by Organic Standard company, and organic producers were the partners of the record, such as Organic Synthes LLC, Danubian Agrarian LLC, Organic MILK LLC, Ethnoproduct LLC, GALEKS-AGRO PE, Agroecology PE, Deddens Agro LLC, UKROLIYA LLC, BIO-PHARM AGROTRADE LTD, URCUKRAINE SPA LLC, and Organic Ukraine PU. That was not the first record set within the framework of AGROPORT. During Agroport West Lviv, 3,285 kg of organic buckwheat porridge with meat and mushrooms was cooked jointly with the West Chef Group. Only time will show what a surprise has been prepared by the organizers of the National Pavilion of Ukraine for BIOFACH 2019.

HOW UKRAINE “HAVE STIRRED THE POT” WITH ORGANIC PORRIDGE? First Organic Record Agroport West Lviv 2018 April 19–21, 2018 Danylo Galyckiy International Airport Lviv

A new record was set in Ukraine. The biggest amount of cereal porridge was cooked from the certified organic products only. The record was set at the Largest Agricultural Exhibition of Eastern Europe AGROPORT West Lviv 2018. The topic of “organic products and their perspectives in Ukraine” became the keynote of the event. Its level and relevance of the topic of organic products were emphasized by the important guests- the exhibition was attended by the President of Ukraine, heads of relevant industries ministries, heads of several Ukrainian

van (truck) made two thousand kilometers. From Poltava region, for example, one and a half tons of organic buckwheat (there was 1225 kg only used to prepare the dish) and 100 liters of organic sunflower oil were delivered. Kharkiv provided 300 kilograms of organic onion, the Kiev company – three kilograms of organic black pepper and half a kilogram of organic laurel leaf. Farmers from Lviv, Volyn, Ternopil, Vinnytsya, and Zhytomyr regions provided organic: 20 kilograms of mushrooms, 100 kilograms of carrots, almost 500 kilograms of meat (veal, beef and pork), 15 kilograms of garlic, 50 kilograms of butter, as well as canned meat, lard, and greens. A huge, three-meter in diameter pot (kettle) was brought from Ternopil. 20 chefs, the members of the Western Chief Group Association, which includes the best chefs of Lviv restaurants, all together with a great effort were working on the preparation process. Totally there were almost hundred chefs involved in the cooking process, and preparation of all the ingredients lasted almost a week. At the same time, several people were mixing cereal with special paddles and it was literally a very difficult process as four of the paddles got broken.

regions, foreign delegates, as well as thousands of farmers, producers and other people involved in the field. The exhibition lasted three days on April 19-21. The first two days were held at the Danylo Halytskyi International Airport Lviv, and the record was set on the last final day on the special demonstration field. The dish was 3285 kg weight or 3900 liters in volume. Farmers and companies from all over Ukraine gave their products to prepare buckwheat porridge with meat and mushrooms. To collect such an amount of buckwheat, the

– This record is, in fact, a significant job, not just the cooking itself, but the whole process of preparation. Essential, difficult and well-organized job, – mentioned the head of the National Register of Records of Ukraine – Ms. Lana Vetrova, who officially recorded this achievement. By the way, it could easily claim to the world record of the cooking dish just from organic products, but this required a few months of formal preparation. And there was lack of time to do that. Moreover, this is the biggest amount of boiled buckwheat porridge for today. Of course, this record is not an end in itself, but the way to attract the attention of society and those governmental decision makers to the

question concerning organic goods production. This consumer- and land-friendly as well as an ecological way of producing goods, according to the point of view of the organizers of AGROPORT West Lviv 2018 fair and the AGROPORTEX.bio project leaders, should become the main one in Ukraine. By the way, these products have a huge demand in the world and our country has a huge potential: black earth reserves, where you can yield good harvests without using any harmful chemicals. – Assuming the fact that in Ukraine there are 40 million hectares of the land are for agricultural use, only 1% of it is under organic farming. This is not enough, considering our European neighbors, where in some countries this number reaches 10% of the total area of agricultural land. It is expected that in Ukraine the area under organic will increase and within 3-5 years will reach at least 500 thousand hectares, – said Ms. Olga Trofimtseva, Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine on European Integration. According to experts, Ukraine must take advantage of global trends. This is our chance significantly to change life in the countryside. Indeed, small and medium-sized farmers have much more chances in the organic sector, than big agricultural holdings. Actually, all questions related to organic farming (climate change, technology, financial instruments, legislation) and rural development were discussed at the AGROPORT Forum West Lviv 2018; strategic sessions were held at the same time with the exposition. In general, 12 conferences were held with the participation of representatives from 15 countries. Farmers and representatives of the united territorial communities could take on the best world experience (shared by guests from France, Canada, Germany, Latvia, Turkey, etc.) and discuss their questions. Only by mutual efforts, small agricultural producers can solve problems of certification, storage, transportation of agricultural products, etc.

www.BuyOrganic.in.ua

– Agroport Ukraine long ago went beyond the size of just an agricultural exhibition and today this is the wide support oriented system for the producers. We are trying to improve the awareness of farmers, to give new knowledge, to demonstrate the best technology, – says the head of AGROPORT UKRAINE, Mr. Dmytro Tytarenko. – We have an opportunity to show how this process is organized by the world leading producers, and how should we help the Ukrainian farmers to arrange it. During this international event the President of Ukraine, Mr. Petro Poroshenko mentioned, that a farmer itself, in particular, feeds Ukraine, an now when we are joining the international markets he feeds Europe, as well. That’s why our country should provide a farmer with proper support and protection. – Now we are winning European market, and as large agricultural businesses have been already introduced there for a long time, then my job as the President is to support small and mediumsized producers: to provide tools, including financial ones, to create certain structures that would advise and teach the farmers. We have to combine the best in the world Ukrainian lands with advanced European technologies. The result of this Forum should be a creation of such supportive tools, – said Garant. By the way, at the exhibition, a lot of Ukrainian developments, in addition to foreign technology, were presented: domestic technics, which suite the best for our soils, unique plant protection products and fertilizers that are suitable for the organic production in the Western regions of Ukraine, as well as innovative agro-IT projects. A useful tool for promoting farmers’ produce on the international market is going to be the mobile application called AgroportEx.bio without which the organization of a National Record would be impossible. This development is introduced

by Ukrainian specialists and will work on the international level helping farmers to find buyers for their products both in the domestic market and abroad without intermediaries. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: AGROPORT UKRAINE (agroport.ua) as International Agricultural Forum is a part of the official UN calendar and takes place with the support and participation of FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations). It has occurred already for five years and this year to be held in three regions of Ukraine: Western, Southern and Eastern, in order to be closer to a farmer and consider regional peculiarities. AGROPORT West Lviv 2018 was supported by the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine and Lviv Regional State Administration. It was organized by the Department of Agricultural Development of Lviv Regional State Administration and Aviabrand LLC. More than two hundred participants from all over the country took part in the exhibition, and more than 7000 thousand people came as visitors – from Lviv, Volyn, Rivne, Ternopil, Khmelnytsky, Ivano-Frankivsk, Zakarpattia, Chernivtsi, from other regions as well. Only for the 5th anniversary of AGROPORT UKRAINE, a new project – “Ukrainian Trypillya” – has started up. The practical part of the exhibition was the opportunity to check the presented products in action: on the fields of the village Skniliv was conducted test-drive of off-road cars and agricultural machinery. Also, the Farm Fair and the Street Organic Kitchen Festival was organized here the setting of a new organic record were held as well. The next region which will take over the event will be Kherson (AGROPORT South Kherson 2018, July 26-28), and Kharkiv – (AGROPORT East Kharkiv 2018, October 11-13).

We want to show that humanity can consume organic products almost for the price of nonorganic. After all business has meaning when it changes the world for better Agroindustrial group Arnika is located in Poltava region and cultivates more than 15 thousand ha of land. Arnika grows food grade wheat, food and feed soybean, food and feed corn, technical hemp, oleic brown flax and high oleic sunflower. Based on the results of 2017/2018 marketing years, Arnika became the largest in Ukraine exporter of its own organic goods to EU countries. The system of control for keeping organic standards is implemented in the company. It includes GPS monitoring, bar coding and sealing of all big bags with organic goods. Arnika has its own organic elevator with the capacity of simultaneous storage of about 25 thousand tons of goods and is equipped with modern cleaning and drying equipment. Also in the year 2018 photo separator was put into operation and it allows to prepare food grade goods with purity 99,9%.

Andrii Pylypchenko, Founder of Agroindustrial group Arnika

Developed logistics infrastructure and established connections with sea terminals allows to ship goods by different types of transportation: vessels, sea containers, rail wagons and trucks. During 2016-2018 the company exported more than 26 thousand tons of organic goods to Switzerland, Germany, the United Kingdom, Norway, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, Lithuania, Estonia, Canada and Japan. To conduct effective organic farming Arnika uses solely modern machinery. That is why during years 2016-2018 Arnika invested more than 8 million Euro to modernize the machinery park and now it consists of the following brands of machinery: Einböck, Mc-Farlane, Horsch, Great Plains, Kverneland, John Deere, Challenger, Lemken, Gregoire Besson, Monosem, Muthing, Kinze, Kuhn, Case IH, JCB and etc.

Also company has its own Research and Development Center. Experts of this center work to introduce new varieties of plants resistant to mechanical cultivation and suitable for organic farming for own sowing as well as for selling seed material. In addition they develop and tryout effective agro technologies. The R&D Center has entomology and phytopathology department, where scientists from various branches of agriculture, particularly phytophatologists and enthomologists, study illnesses, research pests and determine the influence of those and others on the environment. Arnika also produces flour according to modern technology from the awakened grains of soybeans and chickpeas. The processing is done due to grain’s own moisture and light stream which is close to solar radiation. That is why the processes that happen in the grain are similar to natural. Products from the awakened grain have high nutritional value because they preserve natural composition of food fibers, minerals and vitamins common for whole grains of soybeans and chickpeas. They are completely safe and ready for use without additional heat treatment. The agroindustrial group has developed a feed supplement for fattening calves and cows based on by-pass protein and by-pass starch. Arnika plans to introduce this product to Ukrainian and European markets till the end of the year 2019. Due to high automatization and control throughout production cycle we provide full traceability of the production process from seeds to goods packed in big bags. The company unites transparency and sustainability of business, modern approaches to agro production, responsibility and professionalism of staff.

The Ukrainian organic market is steadily growing and this is really impressive! Since 2002, the agricultural area certified as organic has more than doubled in Ukraine. In 2016, Ukraine entered the top 20 countries by area of organic agricultural land (including lands undergoing conversion), according to FIBL&IFOAM - Organics International. Nowadays Ukraine is one of the most important suppliers of organic agricultural commodities to EU member states and is increasing its presence with organic products overseas. Speaking about the organic domestic market in Ukraine, it is necessary to point out that it is driven by a trend of healthy lifestyle and “responsible consumption” among younger generations and people with incomes higher than average. The assortment of Ukrainian organic products available on the shelves is quite diverse but not complete. The main sales channels are supermarkets and specialty shops in big cities. Their consumers can buy organic dairy and meat products, fruits and vegetables, grocery and bakery products, flour, macaroni products, vegetable oils, beverages and canned products. Though the market is growing fast, our organic operators are still facing a lot of challenges. Therefore, in order to make organic producers stronger and competitive in local and international markets, a new organization called Ukrainian Organic Cluster will continue its activities with ambitious goals in 2019 in the framework of the initiative for increasing the visibility of Ukrainian organic producers in domestic and foreign markets and popularization of organic food consumption at national level.

On April 6th, 2017, 29 Ukrainian organic sector operators, “ready to eat” food producers and processors together with players from other supporting industries, consultants, governmental institutions, and universities from 11 regions officially joined Ukrainian Organic Cluster. The aim of Ukrainian Organic Cluster is to build up an ecosystem, set up a strong network between players, strengthen the capacity of the organic agricultural sector at the national level and accelerate the development of organic production by: • definition of joint competence and areas of possible cooperation for Cluster members; • initiating the creation of value-added products resulting from the joint capabilities and their commercialization in domestic and international markets; • transfer of knowledge, exchange of technology and international experience; • linkages with national, international and inter-sectoral clusters and their members, establishing cooperation with clusters and other association in related industries (food production and processing, cosmetics, biotechnology, renewable energy, information technology). • initiating joint projects both at national and international levels, designed to strengthen the competitiveness of participants; • organization of advertising and education, training and information activities; • international marketing activities of the Cluster and its members. You can learn more about the Cluster by following the link organiccluster.com.ua and sending us your requests by e-mail: info@organiccluster.com.ua

HOW TO BIOFACH

BIOFACH 2018 Notes of the Organic Exporters production. It was extremely important for Ukraine to declare itself at this level. However, in our country, organic production has great potential. There is a huge demand for organic products in the world which grows day by day. They are expensive, therefore the premium for organic is high. Our black soils let us get decent crops without the use of chemical fertilizers, and considering that such cultivation requires a lot of human labor, new jobs will be created in the countryside, as well as such production protects the environment. Despite everything, the benefit is obvious. The only thing that does not allow Ukrainian farmers to win markets in Europe and those which are overseas is weak marketing. So far, only intermediaries are making good money on their products. A huge delegation came from Ukraine to BioFach in order to introduce domestic producers to the world and to assist them to find their foreign partners by themselves.

Organic production is a literally bright future of Ukrainian agricultural sector as well as countryside in general. In particular, this is the most relevant and profitable niche where Ukrainian farmers can become a world leader. At The World´s Leading Trade Fair for Organic Food BioFach 2018 in Nurnberg Ukrainian products had great success. Though, this year at Biofach the mobile application Agroportex.bio hit the front page. It helps producer and customer find each other faster and without an intermediary. Ukrainian project is unique. A lot of foreign companies have shown great interest in it and for our producers, it opens bright prospects.

So, if before almost all the participants of the National Pavilion of Ukraine were grain producers, now there were 4 berry producers, 3 producers of oilseeds, 1 producer of tomato paste, 1 tea maker, 1 certification body and 9-grain producers which also offered processed products.

BioFach (www.biofach.de) is the largest and most authoritative world event in the field of organic

“Organic agriculture in Ukraine is developing very rapidly. Moreover, both the number of producers and the range of products is increasing, and most important that our organic production quickly

“I think that Ukraine has great potential and in 7 years this market has developed considerably. Ukraine has three main privileges: first is a good geographical location, it is close to European markets; second, there are very good prices in Ukraine which is important for German buyers; and thirdly, there is a high demand for organic finished products. For example, we are distinguishing for ourselves the following main niches: berries and traditional national products such as: bagels, jams, mushrooms, watermelons, for instance, from Kherson and Carpatian region, etc. Ukraine has a lot of young talented beginners in business, but they are facing problems such as dealing with products that do not always meet European standards and the overall image of Ukrainian production that needs to be improved.

That is why the Ukrainian hall at BioFach is the best opportunity to present its own products. Moreover, I hope that in the nearest future we will be able to find Ukrainian producers and their organic products through mobile applications such as AgroportEx. bio easily. We do also arranging visits for German delegations to the exhibitions in Ukraine, in particular, this year we will work with Agroport and will have an opportunity to tell more about the Ukrainian market of organic products to German potential buyers. We can only encourage both sides, European importers and Ukrainian producers, to strengthen the activities for bilateral trade as there is still huge potential for creating sustainable value and I am not only thinking of Organic honey, where we are actually observing huge demand from German side”

Organic Ukraine Business Hub Brand New National Pavilion of Ukraine at Biofach 2019 fit in contemporary world trends”, says Olga Trofimtseva, Deputy Minister on European Integration of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, and continues: “In particular, there is an increase in the number of companies that offer processed products. Today, producers of organic goods have clear understanding that high-tech enterprises have a significant advantage in Ukraine and on the international market as well. The current trend is the orientation toward the preferences of the next generation. I would suggest all of our producers who are just entering the market to take into account these global trends. You should use some unique potential of your area and create an individual product; pay special attention to processing (it may be, for example, frozen berries, oil, etc.) and focus on the tastes of the ultimate consumer, of course not only Ukrainian but also foreign. Considering these facts, you will find profit in it”. Time and again, within the framework of the exhibition, in order to have an opportunity for Ukrainian producers and foreign buyers to communicate more active, the traditional Ukrainian Forum has taken place. IMPRESSIONS OF THE PARTICIPANTS “BioFach is a unique platform which gives a possibility to establish strong business connections”, - says Andriy Pylypchenko, the founder of the agricultural group “Arnika”. “Indeed, over the past years, the attitude towards Ukrainian producers has improved. For example, our company has already gained considerable reliability among consumers. We are working in

the segment of “premium” and we can confirm the quality of our products and the entire cycle of production. If last year all export sales were carried out hundred-per-cent through intermediaries, this year the number of direct sales is making up almost 20%. Next year we are expecting this number to increase significantly. Participants have asserted that during the exhibition each of them has concluded about 60 contacts with potential buyers! “For the producer, this exhibition is extremely important as we can make direct contact with a buyer. If we do not participate in such events, we will stay unknown and we will continue to use the services of Polish and Baltic traders who sell our

berries under their label dumping us at a price and closing those potential markets that we are hoping to open here. I would like to mention that very often we are facing a situation that under the terms of a contract of traders we do not have the right to brand our product. They are asking to don’t indicate that this product is from Ukraine or that it is produced by “Fruktona”, thus the consumer does not know that this is our product. The Ukrainian hall at this exhibition is a great leap forward both for the Ukrainian producer and for Ukraine as a country in general. During the exhibition, we had more than 40 meetings per day and 75% of them is our customer. I advise everyone to come to international exhibitions, represent Ukraine and your goods and you will discover new opportunities!” - said Kostiantyn Kuzmenko, the director of the company “Fruktona” (Vinnytsya). As long as not all the organic producers were able to come to BioFach personally, the organizers of the International Agricultural Exhibition and Forum AGROPORT Ukraine (www.agroport.ua) were establishing necessary relations and representing the interests of domestic farmers. “Agroport outwent the format of the agricultural exhibition long ago, today it represents an entire support system for producers. Accordingly, we are trying to raise awareness of farmers, to give new knowledge, and BioFach is important to us from the standpoint of experience”, - says the Head of AGROPORT Dmytro Tytarenko. “For example, In

“BioFach fair is the best platform in the world where you can present an assortment of organic products from exhibitors from all over the world! For Ukraine, it is also a great opportunity to show its own products and to prove itself on foreign markets. For several years running, the Institute of Organic Agriculture FiBL (Switzerland) supports the organization of the National Pavilion and the Ukrainian Forum at BioFach within the framework of the project “Development of the Organic Market in Ukraine”. In general, Switzerland has been closely connected with Ukraine for many years. We have been working with Ukraine for about 10 years. During this time, we are observing a great potential for the

development of this market and we understand that Ukraine can become a leader in the export of organics to the European organic market. But we still have a lot of work to do that is why we often conduct training sessions, conferences and other events that can provide more information both for the beginners in organic market and companies that are running an organic business already. In addition to organic products that have been exported from Ukraine for a long time like arable crops, we see potential in exporting of organic processed products like sunflower or rape oil, cakes for feedstuff industry or organic berries to Western Europe and potential for fruits and dairy products to the markets in the Middle East.”

HOW TO BIOFACH Ukraine marketing is quite weak. Therefore, we are trying to understand how this process is organized by the world›s leading companies and how to help Ukrainian farmers to reach the same level. Unfortunately, Ukraine is currently considered “as a market for cheap raw materials” for further processing. In addition, Ukrainian producers have already managed to establish a certain name of unfairness on the international market. But now this situation is changing rapidly. The organic sector is particularly interesting from the marketing point of view, as it has a defined standard, certification system and quality assurance.” INNOVATIONS FROM UKRAINIANS The mobile application Agroportex.bio, which was presented by Ukraine at the exhibition, will become a major tool for marketing development and forming a good reputation. “Producers want to sell goods with higher prices and buyers are looking to buy as cheap as possible. To do this they definitely need to exclude intermediaries. Each year in the world there are platforms created to solve this task, but at the end, they are not applicable for Ukraine and Ukrainian farmers cannot take advantage from them, “ – points out Mariia Makhnovets, consultant in organic trade from Ukraine, representative of Agroportex.bio company. “First of all, they are in foreign language, and second of all, they are usually developed as a website, whereas farmers do not have time to surf on the Internet for long, the phone is the most convenient tool for them. When they need to establish connections, Ukrainians create communities in social networks but they

are working pretty chaotic. Therefore, Agroportex. bio is an alternative to the traditional foreign specialized platforms and Ukrainian bulletin boards. Because the first ones are not adapted to the mental and infrastructural realities of the Ukrainian market, and the second ones do not guarantee the traceability of organic supply chains to the buyers and reliability of sellers”. Only primary producers with certified organic production and proven reputation will be able to use the Agroportex.bio application. The system will instantly notify them about the products requests specified in their organic certificates. All offers from producers and requests from buyers will be

automatically translated to the user language. The start-up of the mobile application is scheduled in the second quarter of 2018 approximately. Users would have to pay a yearly fee for subscription and in future, there will be commission taken from the auction (difference of the offered price and one which is confirmed). Developers believe that exactly this type of format but not the commission from the contract will be the most beneficial for all the parties. According to the representatives of the project, in the first six months, the application can be used free of charge by pre-registration on the website: www.agroportex.bio

A CHANCE TO TALK WITH A POTENTIAL BUYER

“Prospects for Ukrainian exports to European countries are very significant because many unique authentic products are produced in Ukraine. I believe that potential European buyers, like me, are interested in products such as honey, marmalade, jam, and canned products from berries, especially those that are grown and produced in the Carpathians; as well as mushrooms and especially interesting are dairy products.

Tobias Elschner, owner of the organic shop “Gesunde Kost OHG” in the center of Stuttgart (Germany)

Unfortunately, it is not so easy to contact Ukrainian producer directly. The only possible option for me is to search through the Internet but the problem is the “language barrier”, as not all the websites have information in foreign languages. That’s why the lack of information about the producer is a big problem.”

HOW TO BIOFACH

BioFach 2019 starts on February 13 and will last until February 16. The National Pavilion of Ukraine will be presented for the sixth time at the leading worldwide organic event: Hall 4A, exhibition stand 4A-511. Exhibiting hours: 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM and 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on the final day (16.02.2019). Traditionally Agroportex.bio has prepared advice for those who make preparations for a trip to Nuremberg. As an assistant to farmers on organic market, this resource will help both to communicate with potential partners and also to plan trips to the specific events so that they were most advantageous and productive. And the only tool you need is a smartphone that`s always kept on hand.

SO, HOW MUCH SHOULD YOU SPEND TO TAKE PART IN BIOFACH 2019? This issue is probably of interest to many players in the organic market of Ukraine, especially those who only set up this business and have not yet decided to participate as exhibiting company, but the status of visitor which will allow establishing business relationships is precisely what they need. Moreover, there are many opportunities to participate at a distance, more details see on the official website of Organic Ukraine Business Hub. #1 TICKET FOR BIOFACH 2019 If you plan to visit all exhibition days, it is much cheaper to buy a ticket on the Internet. In this case, it will cost EUR 53.00. It gives access to the exhibition for all days. Ticket for BioFach 2019 purchased when the event is being held will cost EUR 65.00. Booking online #2 TRANSPORT TO NUREMBERG To book tickets on WizzAir.comis cost-efficient. It makes no sense to consider other options for transfers since this low-cost carrier will allow being in Nuremberg in 2 hours after departure from Kyiv. They offer a direct flight from “Kyiv” International Airport (Zhuliany). By the way, the most convenient dates for departure are

36

on February 11 (from Kyiv) at 7:25 am, 2 days before the exhibition, and from Nuremberg on February 15 at 9:20 pm, the next-to-last day of BioFach 2019. If you buy tickets on WizzAir*, please note that the minimum air fare (BASIC TRAVEL LIGHT) includes only hand luggage up to 10 kilograms for the round-trip tickets amounting approx. EUR 44.00. If you take the additional bag up to 20 kilograms (WIZZ GO PACK & SAVE), the cost of tickets will increase up to approx. EUR 127.00 for the round-trip tickets. You can book them on the website or through the mobile application. *Ticket prices are constantly changing, depending on the time left before the departure. Booking online | GooglePlay | AppStore Those who live in Kyiv have some advantages since the direct flight is from Zhuliany, but residents of other regions have to spend about EUR 30.00 to travel to Kyiv and back. You can book the tickets online or through the mobile application. Booking online | GooglePlay | AppStore #3 DOCUMENTS If you have a biometric passport, you do not need to worry about a visa. When you travel to Germany it is better to have

Organic Ukraine Business Hub Brand New National Pavilion of Ukraine at Biofach 2019 tickets for the exhibition printed out, confirmation for the accommodation booked and return flight tickets. #4 TRANSPORT TO THE EXHIBITION PLACE AND CITY TRIPS THROUGH NUREMBERG To travel through Nuremberg, the most costefficient to buy the travel ticket (Zone A) for public transport. You can travel free of charge by metro during the exhibition by showing a ticket of a visitor to BioFach. Therefore, if you do not plan other trips, you can save on the travel ticket. But if you don`t want to be restricted only by metro trips, choose the 7-Tage-MobiCard ticket. It costs EUR 26.70, valid for 7 days and gives you the possibility to use all types of public transport, except for a taxi. It can be purchased at the airport on the day of arrival. But we advise you to order it online on the website or through the mobile application of the carrier since after the flight you can stand in long queues to the “ticket machines”. Booking online | GooglePlay | AppStore #5 ACCOMMODATION You can find different options for your accommodation by searching on booking.com– the prices for the hotels start from EUR 430.00 per day, but it is much cheaper to book individual apartments on airbnb.com, where you can find cost-efficient options. Hostel prices start at

EUR 30.00 per night, individual rooms - from EUR 60.00 (for early booking - from EUR 40.00). We recommend choosing accommodation in Nuremberg. To travel from the main railway station to the place of BioFach 2019 will take about 20 minutes. Booking online | GooglePlay | AppStore #6 PLANS FOR THE MEETINGS The organizers of the exhibition launched a useful resource for all participants from 2018, where everyone can submit an online application for the meeting to be organized during BIOFACH 2019: b2match.io Each visitor can use free the room for business meetings if registered online. #7 BUSINESS PROGRAM Dozens of conferences and seminars will be held during four days of the exhibition. See a detailed program at Biofach.de. See more interesting information about the Ukrainian Pavilion, its participants and events on the website of the organizers: buyorganic.in.ua #8 UKRAINIAN TRADITIONS If you plan to visit Ukrainian pavilion on February 14, do not forget to take vyshyvanka (traditional Ukrainian embroidered shirt) with you.

A joint photo of Ukrainian participants and partners of Ukrainian Pavilion will be made in the Ukrainian Pavilion at the background of the record National Flag at 5:30 pm: Hall 4A, exhibition stand 4A-511. #9 ADDITIONAL COSTS: INTERNET, MOBILE COMMUNICATIONS AND NUTRITION You will need the Internet both at the exhibition and while walking through the Nuremberg. There are two options - to buy a one-time card, which costs EUR 20-30, or you can use Ukrainian mobile operator roaming options. For example, if you top up your Vodafone account for UAH 500.00, you will receive 500 MB, 500 minutes for calls and 500 SMS & MMS in all directions. For planned calls and navigator application, it will be quite enough. If you visit BioFach 2019, there is no sense to buy a tourist card in Nuremberg. It gives you only two free trips and two free tickets to the museums, and costs around EUR 28. Spending the same amount you will have a travel ticket for all types of transport. To plan your meal and a “cultural program” so that at least roughly calculate the amount required, you can use the Internet services for the tourists, forums or guides. Alternatively, you can try to find food outlets offering good prices at www.tripadvisor.ru.

ORGANIC INNOVATION DAYS Who Was the First from Ukraine tporganics.eu/agroportex-bio/

B2B MARKETPLACE AGROPORTEX.BIO OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT Mariia Makhnovets Co-founder Agroportex.Bio TP Organics is one of the 40 European Technology Platforms (ETP) officially recognised by the European Commission. Its mission is to strengthen research & innovation for organics and other agroecological approaches that contribute to sustainable food and farming systems. To achieve this mission, it unites large companies, small & medium enterprises, researchers, farmers, consumers, and civil society organisations active in the organic value chain from production, input & supply to food processing, marketing, and consumption. The platform identifies the research needs of the organic and agroecological sector and then relays research priorities to the policy-makers in Europe and beyond. TP Organics also informs its members about funding opportunities for research & innovation and promotes knowledge exchange between farmers, companies, and researchers. Its 87 members and 7 national platforms reach 5.8 million farmers, 5,000 companies, 2,500 researchers and farm advisers, 20 million citizens.

38

The objective of Agroportex.bio is to contribute to creating a world where organic farming is an economically desirable and accessible profession. The concept is based on the idea of both farmers and buyers needing a handson, the high-quality instrument for their sales and marketing activities. The divide between them is continuously growing, and the global organic product flows suffer from fraud. In supply chains with up to 3 intermediaries, manipulations and irregularities are problems for importers and certification bodies. At the same time, certified organic producers tend to quit organic agriculture due to unfair competition with “fake” organic farmers, knocking down the prices for organic products. As the result, international importers and control authorities rate countries with such practices as “risky”. This even made the European Commission to launch the special Import guidelines for additional official controls on products originating from Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and the Russian Federation for 3 years. In light of both the necessity and willingness of key market players to create a decent and effective solution to these challenges, aiming to increase the transparency and traceability of fair organic supply chains, Agroportex takes the lead in creating an image of the Ukrainian organic market as a reliable organic supplier, helping the operators in forming the fair global organic market by excluding fake organic operators and mitigating the risks in the supply chain.

MAIN OUTCOMES AND RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE PROJECT Each year, multiple online platforms are being created to bridge the international organic supply and demand. The mobile application Agroportex.bio stands out as a niche B2B marketplace and trade assistant on the global market of organic producers that guarantees direct access for buyers from all over the world to proven primary organic producers. The core digital capability to develop software products that enable data-driven farming and help to increase transparency and traceability of fair organic supply chains was leveraged. As an alternative to conventional marketplaces where no compliance or certificate control is required as well as to specialised platforms and bulletin boards whose priority is not organic, Agroportex.bio is dedicated to create transparency in international organic markets for users from all over the world, maximising the value of digital tools and its relationships with hundreds of farmers by connecting them directly with buyers and enabling them to receive best prices for producing high quality food more sustainably, according to organic and agroecological principles. Most conventional marketplaces are usually designed as websites. However, farmers cannot spend much time on the Internet while having a mobile phone at hand as a most convenient, daily tool, in particular for the coming generation that is expected to take over the management of organic farms and marketing of goods. The app is simple to use, only giving access to

Organic Ukraine Business Hub Brand New National Pavilion of Ukraine at Biofach 2019 certified primary producers who are enabled to find reliable partners and sell their products at fair prices while bypassing intermediaries. Each operator creates their own reputation history in the database continuously. In this way, organic control bodies can keep an eye on problem users, and improve their control of their clients from farm to fork. Farmers will have more options and are no longer forced to be pricetakers in their local markets, instead of receiving bids from a wider pool of buyers. The system collects up-to-date info on supply and demand as well as key pricing trends on the markets. A wide range of analytical data collected by the system will help to identify local markets imperfections and barriers in shifting to organic agriculture. Promoting organic approaches in farming, especially in rural areas, will also result in the growing number of jobs. The platform itself has global potential: After the localisation of the interface, the range of products will grow progressively, as newly registered users upload their certificates. It is a tool for finding reliable partners and resource for analytical reviews that later could become a tool for research and selection of niches in the organic market and encourage farmers to switch to organic agriculture. Global adoption will broaden networking by creating stronger communication channels between Ukrainian and international organic operators. This should provide even more possibilities for mutual exchange of best organic farming practices,

www.BuyOrganic.in.ua

raise the level of proficiency, boost research, and simplify the process of innovations share and implementation in the near future. Directly connecting producers and buyers is an also critical step towards a food system that is responsive to the voices of citizens. As long as farmers are producing a commodity, they have a little economic incentive for producing a higher quality or more sustainability. Agroportex.bio enables buyers to buy directly from producers, reducing the supply chain costs and increasing profitability for the whole industry while making the transaction more transparent and efficient. Marketing of goods with fair prices is imperative for increasing the number of organic farms. INNOVATION SCALE AND STAGE From concept to implementation, it took 2 years, including studying the real market needs and analysing mistakes of forerunners, aiming to build efficient communication between market players. Agroportex.bio was first launched and became available for download at the end of July 2018. It is now on the stage of Ukrainian organic producers’ acquisition. During the 1st month, it was downloaded more than 200 times. 57 % of the users have sent their registration requests, and 13% of users with 80 product categories are finishing the compliance. By the end of 2018, they are expected to complete the submission of the documents as well as their certification

compliance in order to have their own profiles ready in the system. At the beginning of 2019, an English version will be available. Operators (buyers and producers) from all over the world are welcome to join the system. • • •

Stage (2018-2019): Local Ukrainian market of producers – 300+ (0.01% of the world market) Stage (from 2019): Scaling-up to EU Market of producers – 373.000+ (13.68% of the world market) Stage (from 2020): Global world organic market – 2.7M producers

Adoption in non-RUS/ENG-speaking countries is planned under the help of the main local key players – cooperatives and associations – that will create the global network for such an innovative approach in their organic markets. However, the organic market is considered to be just the starting point since there is a highend monitoring system available. In the future, the potential for this innovation to be adopted by other niches in conventional markets is expected to also strengthen these supply chains.

Since its very start in 2016, Agritrade Ukraine set up one priority task among the others which were informing small and medium agricultural enterprises about their export opportunities in the EU. With provision of information about regulations, quotas and requirements of the European market came the understanding that trends were another crucial point to be considered when talking about export. That is when organic products came in proving to be one of the most promising niches at the Ukrainian agricultural market. Since 2017 Agritrade Ukraine actively supports the export of Ukrainian organic products to the EU and the Ukrainian organic sector in general. Cooperating with both Ukrainian and German producers and institutions the project gives up to date information on the EU organic market, but also shows the best practices and success stories from producers during export trainings all over Ukraine.

To continue the informational assistance was created the Export Helpdesk at the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine as an effective hotline tool for fast feedback on essential questions about export procedures. As a result of the summarized Helpdesk requests was published the Practical Guideline for Organic Exporters to the EU, summing up all the essentials for organic producers, regardless their export experience. At the same time, Agritrade Ukraine offers a wide range of business-oriented events and platforms such as forums, business missions, upholds ongoing activities of Ukrainian national booths at international exhibitions including the BIOFACH exhibition in Nuremberg.

UKRAINE HORTICULTURE BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT PROJECT (UHBDP) Market Problem Ukraine’s agriculture sector is the country’s third largest economic sector and provides 20% of the country’s employment. In spite of excellent growing conditions, Ukrainian agriculture is hindered by comparatively low yields and productivity of small and medium farms which cultivate 65% of agricultural land and produce the majority of the country’s fruit and vegetable yet remain disconnected from markets and isolated from supply chains.

MEDA’s Solution Ukraine Horticulture Business Development Project (UHBDP) expands and extends the achievements of the “Ukraine Horticulture Development Project”, which MEDA implemented from 2008 to 2013. UHBDP operates in the South of Ukraine (Zaporizhia, Kherson, Mykolaiv and Odessa regions) and seeks to benefit 44,000 small, medium horticulture farmers and enterprises. MEDA anticipates that small and medium farmers assisted by UHBDP will collectively expand their sales to 50,000 metric tons valued at $40 mln. annually by the end of the project.

Key components of the project include:

46

AGGEEK

YOU HAVE TO STAY TUNED AND FEEL THE TRENDS TO SERVE FARMERS NEEDS EVEN BETTER / Agroport EventTeam AGROPORT is a major event which has been held for farmers and agricultural producers at the facilities of Kharkiv, Lviv and Kherson municipal airports annually since 2014. We asked Mr. Dmytro Tytarenko, General Manager (GM), AGROPORT Ukraine, to dwell on the marketing aspect of the activity, current communication channels, an audience of the present-day agrarian exhibitions and his vision of the Agroport’ outlook. – How have you come up with an idea to hold agricultural fairs at the airport facilities? Everything started with the airport consulting activities which our company AviaBrand had been involved in since 2006. Initially, we worked with airports in Ukraine, gradually expanding on those, partly located in Russia and after a while, in Europe. When we dived deep in particulars of the European airport›s operations, we saw that aviation-related activities, i.e. those pertaining planes and passenger traffic account for only a half of their revenues. The rest of their income is usually generated by non-aviation activities. Basically, the airport is an exciting triangle linking planes, passengers and air companies. The latter two do not care much about the airport, which in turn depends on them directly being in need of the passenger traffic, while passengers rather look into routing than the facilities. The airport is a kind of entrance gate to access a geographic area, a high-profile component of regional infrastructure, giving away to its capitalraising potential. We started in 2014 with Kharkiv where we found out a finished airshed, which had been used for the accommodation of Dutch football fans during the Euro 2012. At all other times, it would be a common hangar intended for aircraft maintenance and private jets parking. By joining efforts with Kharkiv airport, we took on designing a concept of a business activity which would drive the airport development. We had to decide between IT and agro-industry options. After

50

a great deal of thought, we decided that “joining unjoinable”, i.e. airport and farmers would be really fabulous. That was the focal point we decided to stress on, which was our first mistake. We believed that the very idea of joining injoinable would bring us to a tremendous media effect. Yes, for sure, there was an effect. But it addressed the audience which was not our target. The first year, mainly, city people came to see the fair out of curiosity, though some farmers attended too. We were somewhat upset and uncertain whether the project is worth to be continued. Yet, with positive feedback which came in from partners and visitors, later on, we have got the support of our regional partners, and namely, Kharkiv Tractor Plant, and held the event for the second time in 2015. – By what means have you addressed the issue of the target audience? First and foremost that we learned is why do they come to the fair. It is not about exhibits they want to see, they are in need of information and networking. This is just the reason why so many exhibitions have done their time since there were no more causes to attend them. By the time of the Agroport’s second edition, we woke up to the fact that the niche expert endorsement and business agenda were crucial to the success. Type marketing activities do not ensure the highest efficiency in dealing with agro-industrial activities. For instance, emailing campaign does not work at all with farmers. Tractors are followed with agronomists, while decisions are made by Finance divisions. We’d rather deal with farmers as they are aware of what they need. To get them reached out, direct communication is required. SMS is pretty good, though how much information could we communicate through this channel and would it be proper enough to get in touch so bluntly? That is how we have come up with printed digest idea. We have arranged for a series of special Agrotours, which I joined too. By car, we drove through all Ukrainian Regions, where we met and talked to

2019 © Agroportex.Bio – Official Operator of the Organic Ukraine Business Hub

Organic Ukraine Business Hub Brand New National Pavilion of Ukraine at Biofach 2019 farmers and other agricultural producers. This journey took us three months. Not everyone has a desktop computer or a notebook on his desk. Yet all have the printed magazines and advertising papers. Our digest can be regarded as a kind of inhouse publication. There is a number of fixed items from one issue to another, covering the agenda, call for participation from each Region, information on the feature of an issue, heads up of other major events, list of local agrarian award winners (to be aware of those who are worthy of trust in doing business with). Also, the digest advertises events which we arrange on sites outside the specific region. It allows for a closed cycle of our activities. As a matter of fact, some events are held once a year, and the information performance goes down occasionally in a natural way to regain pace afterward. Specifically, the activities usually weaken much in a winter season. This year digest is enhanced with the advertisement of events to be held abroad. In particular, the Biofach 2019 is on the agenda, but that is another story :) Over several years we have been compiling an address database, which now covers up 30 000 agricultural producers, who get our digests free. Also, digests are sent out to industry-specific institutions, consulates, embassies, chambers of commerce, NGOs and international project offices. We have “made friends” with “Ukrposhta”, providing a unique way to get our digest reaching out various regions in Ukraine since Courier Services work solely within a regional framework. Reforms in “Ukrposhta” worked for our benefit, opening this institution for a wider involvement with the rural area. The digest is edited and printed individually for each area lying within a range of the specific Agroport coverage. We prepared by two or three digest issues for each of the three target cities (Kharkiv, Lviv, and Kherson). Normally, the initial issue gives an advertisement for the event and is followed by an issue providing details of the agenda, while the third one focuses on the run of the Fair. Geographically, several neighboring Regions are within particular Fair coverage. So, Kharkiv Agroport welcomes guests from Kharkiv, Sumy, Poltava and partly, Dnipro Region. In such a way, the initiative gains ground in the adjacent Regions. The digest is printed for the western areas of Ukraine in about 7000 copies, while for the eastern and southern Regions their number runs to almost 10 000. – In which of the cities the Agroport events used to be most attended? Where did the audience look more engaged?

www.BuyOrganic.in.ua

Kharkiv. In Lviv, we have reached the intended audience of over 7000 visitors this year. Working towards better visibility in a specific region, large companies join our events too. And for all we say about Ukrainians being alike, personally, I feel the difference in doing business and holding events, as well as the audience and activities held on the West and on the East of the country. This is why tools and efforts which we apply in different regions may vary. Last year we got feedback from people who wanted to see the farming equipment in operation. Thus, we launched a new project, named “Trypillya”. Its activities are intended for three cities and three fields in different climate conditions which we have at the project’s disposal. Kharkiv was the first city to try this format. The result is as follows: more than 1000 visitors, real sales afield, attendance of regional market players, who came purposefully to the Fair. Visitors can see the available farming equipment in operation and personally tried it. When we got Lviv joined us in “Trypillya” project, the message has been formulated as “we want to feed the East and West”, within the context of regions cooperation rather than a political claim. And we succeeded. Guests from Lviv and Kherson attended the Agroport in Kharkiv, while that one in Lviv welcomed visitors from Kharkiv and Kherson. Here are records set within the Agroport’ framework.

This year we have made a record in cooking the organic buckwheat cereals. While it has been a real challenge for some people, so saying to bid higher, others have interpreted this event a sense of being quite fancy. 3285 kg or 3900 liters in volume! And all is cooked of organic products from all over Ukraine. 1.5 tons of organic buckwheat groats and 100 liters of sunflower oil have been supplied from Poltava region. 300 kilos of onions have been delivered from Kharkiv Oblast; three kilos of black peppers and a half kilo of laurel leaf have been brought from Kyiv. Farmers from Lviv, Volyn, and Ternopil areas have provided 20 kilos of mushrooms, 100 kilos of carrots, about 500 kg of meat (veal, beef, and pork), 15 kilos of garlic, 50 kilos of butter as well as canned stewed meat, lard and spices. Organic fertilizer producer on a car from Kherson has picked up all the ingredients from Ukrainian regions, and cooks from Ternopil have done their part with a huge kettle. Twenty cooks – best professionals from Lviv restaurants, all together have been involved in unprecedented cooking. It took almost a week to prepare ingredients. A few people at once have been stirring the boiling buckwheat by using special “paddles”. Four “paddles” have been broken down on the way. The whole activity has been very entertaining and targeting not only cooking the dish but doing it in a way that not a bit of it had to be put down the drain. Actually, we know about many records which ended with cooked dishes thrown away. We could not allow the same for the organic products, offered by farmers. So, all those who wished to try the dish, passing by the street, staff from nearby offices who used to come with plastic containers, were fed. Even army men have come along with a mobile kitchen trailer. That is why the activity has been both spectacular and practical, by giving an opportunity to know about organic products and their taste which does not differ from one we are accustomed to. It also allowed cooks to work with organic products and connected people from all over Ukraine in a single work effort. The first forum held in Kherson has shown record-setting results as well. In line with high (as per the first one) rate of attendance, real records have been set – i.e. in pulling a combine by the team of the strongman Virastyuk and the giant plate of salad, cut by cooks from southern Ukraine.

51

UKRAINIAN ORGANIC EVENTS – In your opinion, have the Ukrainian farmers got to use the Internet enough? Or do they need for more connection? The Ukrainian farmers move on to this end consistently. Since 2014 we have been using Wi-Fi technology at the Fairs. We provide free access to high-speed Wi-Fi at all our events. Honestly, today we have slightly cut down those opportunities since people prefer watching a live stream, while we need their physical presence. The Internetproviding partner in Lviv, helped us to gather statistical data. Over 3 000 connections were made over the first day only! That was surprising for me since just that day about 3000-4000 persons attended the Fair. In the following days they were less, but the first one when people eye up, is usually quite representative. So, I would say there is a large number of those used to Internet amongst the farmer audience. “E-commerce”, our key partner in the Agroport launching effort, provided a piece of statistical data. At the end of 2016, the agrarian sector was in TOP-10 by products sold on their marketplace. Generally, a great number of current sector-specific groups available on the Viber platform proves that farmers are involved with Internet tools, though they are less represented in Telegram and even less on Facebook. I guess the reason is in the fact that the Viber used to be the first free alternative to SMS, and first virtual groups of farmers appeared there. – What about the duration of the event for several days? Isn’t it too much? Multiformat is a tricky part of the Agroport. Generating as many reasons to come as possible is one of the important tasks. Looking at product innovations and purchase them at a discount, networking with experts or peers, getting information about potential sources of extra revenues within the major activities context, financial instruments, and marketing programs. Two or three days seems an optimum duration for us. Exhibitors would not come for a day. What we strongly need is fostering their interest throughout the whole event. We believe that the concept of business agenda is a good choice. Each of our partners who host an event during the Agroport gets enhancement and additional audience for our part. Another important point concerns the work with participants. Some people think that just to be present is a pledge of success and happiness. Nonetheless, participating in the event requires mastership. For example, once we observed a manager who spent all his time at the Fair to sit with a gadget and finally stated that the relevant audience was not there. All optimum formats available have to be made known. A special format covers the Agroport’ Awards. There are lots of award and prize programs in Ukraine, each providing specific terms and conditions of cooperation. We took a different approach. When we got to receive too many requests concerning the cooperation directly with leading regional companies - key market operators, we have gone in for an internal format. It provides for opportunities to participate in workshops with senior managers. Thanks to this, we may get full knowledge of the current market players and their performance. This is the Region-level award, with a number of nominees running to 100 in each region

52

concerned. All of them do business in good faith and in public, and one can enter into an agreement with them safely. The award function always presumes the participation of the Regionlevel dignitaries and international guests. Thus, in addition to honoring, farmers get opportunities to networking and cooperating. This year we have thought out this format. In the year to come, we plan to expand it on a national level and have all Regions joined. In doing this we are going to sacrifice the major principle of the Agroport, i.e. leaving Kyiv aside. During events, we try to keep formalities to a minimum. No 25 guests with an introductory word. Everything works towards business ambiance. That is the reason why we reached such a winning symbiotic relationship of authorities and agricultural producers, where both are interested in the site. It has been featured in Kharkiv, where local officials have stayed with us afield all day long. They have taken interest in personal communications. It happens that planned panel discussions grow fast into networking during breaks. It does not mean that the event is going wrong, but its whole format was not correct. We hold only a strategic session at the Agroport activities now. It takes up 1.5 hours to highlight major issues in front of key stakeholders, articulate the concerns and follow with breakout sessions and work at a niche. And on the whole, any event by itself is entirely one big major force! – Which of two- either a peer discussion or advice of the invited expert, would be more important for a farmer? There always are people in the room who have “sore points” on a subject discussed. They’ll be very pleased to hear an answer. But usually, guests are passive enough to put questions to home speakers. On the contrary, there is always a flaw of questions at discussions with international speakers. Probably, we are not accustomed to feeling confident about fellow countrymen. Another important point concerns the high activism of people through the online YouTube channel. More than 20 countries have joined us. They accounted for only about 10-15% of the audience, with the physical attendance being cut down with time, so аt the latest Fair held in Lviv, it has not been there at all. Online streaming is only useful as an additional service for attendants. For instance, I have been listening to a discussion by phone without entering the room number one where it was held. – How do you feel about prospects, what is your vision?

Now we are at the end of the first five-year plan. We have been aware of the regions’ important role for the project’s future, need for sellers to come to buyers, and for us to supply maximum updates on a specific region, without trying to say everything on everyone. We have achieved our initial ambition from the geographical viewpoint. Now we feel we should find out the ways to provide even better service for agricultural producers. Like any business event, we have got two audiences – those wishing to sell and those seeking to buy. Addressing the needs of both is our project’s task. Farmers want to buy no less than to sell. We are going to focus on marketing, which is another “sore point” of farmers. Our project “Agroportex.bio” not only aligns with organic products marketing for the Ukrainian producers but is scalable internationally. This is our first niche product of the kind. Today the organic production is a mainstream. Producers are not only more advanced mentally in this niche, but they are more knowledgeable in marketing. The following area we focus on is dealing with international agrarian fairs activities. Now we are taking turn from a quantity towards higher quality. Every element adds up as links of the same chain: we know that the market is of interest for farmers and help them to gain ground on it. All five-year long we have been building our own communications framework. Nowadays, we hold “an inventory”, to get rid of inefficient strategies and try new approaches to marketing. 2018 brought a new industry-specific partner - Turkish Airlines, into the Agroport family. It is industry-specific in all senses. It justifies the format, target audience geography and location. Our Agroport is a business segment for it. Ukraine and Turkey are serious partners in the agrarian trade, especially in southern regions. First air tickets draw game for Agroport visitors in Kherson has already taken place, a new series of gifts is being prepared for guests in Kharkiv. The activities have not been chosen randomly, they are focused on each specific regions’ potential benefit. Key hubs for organic products supplies in Kherson as a core horticultural region were located in Germany and Turkey. They were aligned with specific dates of international agricultural fairs. Here we help the farmers to build on partnerships, adopt best practices and see what does the farming look like worldwide. In Kharkiv we are going the traditional way and, of course, we head to Nurnberg, from where the Agroport team is going to start the next season as a host of the national exhibition hall at Biofach 2019.
