L E T T E R F RO M THE EDITOR

WELCOME BACK, AVENUE readers. Or, if you’re still at the beach or in the country, I’m envious. You may notice a new face in the photo accompanying this letter, so first of all, let me explain. Daisy Prince, AVENUE’s editor since June 2012, gave birth to her second son, Theodore Archibald Armour Chisholm, in mid-July, and is on maternity leave until October. She asked me to fill in for her in the meantime, and I was happy to oblige. You may already know me as the magazine’s real estate editor and Unreal Estate columnist, or as an author; and I continue in both roles. But I’ll be editing the next few issues of AVENUE and hope they will please you as much as being asked to sit in for Daisy has pleased me. ’s annual Fashion Issue, and it couldn’t This is AVENUE’s have a more appropriate woman on our cover than Georgina Chapman, aka Mrs. Harvey Weinstein. Though

The stunning Georgina Chapman is a perfect cover girl for this issue’s abundance of sartorial splendor. she was born a Brit, her marriage to our resident entertainment genius made her a New Yorker of the first order. Suzanne Weinstock Klein’s story on Georgina and the creation of her label Marchesa with her partner Keren Craig—a profile we’ve titled “Mrs. Scissorhands” (co-opting a nickname once pinned on Harvey)—takes you past her sheen of perfect beauty into her cut-up’s personality, her business and her family; and it’s as touching as it is revealing. The stunning Georgina is also a perfect cover girl for the issue’s abundance of sartorial splendor. Reinaldo and Carolina Herrera have long been among my favorite (not to mention most fashionable) New Yorkers, so when we heard they were curating an exhibition celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Verdura jewelry house, we asked to spend some time with them. For its part, Verdura agreed to give us a peek into its archives to accompany the Herreras’ recollections of their friend, Duke Fulco di Verdura. Choosing the 25 Sexiest New Yorkers for our annual listicle was a grueling exercise. Yeah, right. As our editorial team explains in the introduction (albeit in Latin), there’s no accounting for lust. But seriously, we sought to make the list both inclusive and surprising. That’s me,

DEAR READERS,

above, with one of the chosen, Carmen Dell’Orefice. We hope you’ll agree with at least some of our picks—and if you don’t, please email us with suggestions for next year’s list. We also hope you notice that while, like Georgina Chapman and the Herreras, our sexiest hail from all over, they all choose to be sexy here. As usual, the rest of the issue is bursting with end-ofsummer parties, the social wanderings of our peripatetic columnists R. Couri Hay and Debbie Bancroft and things to do and to buy now that you’re back in town, not least a $49.9 million Beekman Place mansion built by William S. Paley and most recently owned by Iran’s deposed Princess Ashraf Pahlavi. Though its East River location may not be the most fashionable at the moment, it’s still sure to inspire property lust. So, let the games, and another lusty New York season, begin. Michael Gross

DEAR READERS,

We are excited to be back “on the avenue” for a busy fall.

I CAN ONLY open this letter by offering my sincere gratitude to all of the supporters of AVENUE on the Beach in our second season out East. Because of the continued enthusiasm of our readers and support of our incredible advertisers, we had an even more successful summer than last. We are very proud of the relationships we are developing in the Hamptons through our editorial coverage, parties and business partnerships, and look forward to many more opportunities to collaborate with all of you. We are excited to be back “on the avenue” for a busy fall. We are kicking it off with a bang: As you will see in the pages to follow, we have put together an exciting and visually impeccable fashion issue. While you enjoy this issue, we are busy putting to rest one of our favorite (and we are pretty sure our reader-favorite) issue of the year: October’s power issue with our annual AVENUE A-List. I know I can’t wait to see who the editors crown the city’s most powerful and influential this year; there are always a few surprises! November is another visual stunner— with an entertainment and design focus, so prepare to savor some beautiful interiors. I am excited to announce that in December, January and February we will be publishing AVENUE on the Beach again, this time for South Florida. Of course, it will also still be distributed in New York as usual. Just as we follow our readers to the East End for the summer, we have decided to migrate south with you for the winter. We look forward to sharing our unique view of society in yet another sunny destination, and hopefully meet some new friends along the way. We look forward to continuing to create meaningful partnerships with our advertisers and assisting them in achieving their business goals, as well as delighting our loyal readers. Happy fall! Kind Regards, Randi Schatz

We serve fewer clients per advisor than most wealth managers. With a 97% retention rate, apparently we’re on to something.

There’s an old saying about quality versus quantity that applies fittingly to wealth management. Take on fewer clients per advisor and you can offer superior service to each. At BNY Mellon Wealth Management, we do just that. So our advisors — and the team of professionals behind them — can keep the client at the center of everything they do. It’s a unique approach that works. Because each client is exactly that — unique. So, if you’re ready for a different kind of wealth manager, maybe it’s time we spoke. ong Island’s legendary light, ocean and landscapes have long inspired artists. Fittingly, the two best Hamptons parties of the summer celebrate those artists, in environments that are artworks unto themselves. The Parrish Art Museum, now comfortably settled into its 20th month at its Herzog & de Meuron-designed home, let it rip this year. Over a thousand people flocked to its sold-out event, poring over the Maya Lin and Jennifer Bartlett exhibits Terrie Sultan, Katharina Otto-Bernstein and relishing the permanent collection now on proud display in the new space. and Inga Maren Otto As longtime supporters of the museum, filmmaker Katharina OttoBernstein and her mother, philanthropist Inga Maren Otto, were honored. Dorothy Lichtenstein introduced her friend, Inga, and Bob Wilson introduced Katharina. Ron Wendt’s elegant design was illuminated by that night’s supermoon; Olivier Cheng’s handsome waiters coddled us; and the heartier among us moved on for dancing in the black box theater. Glam supporters included both the junior and senior James Nederlander and Margo and Charlene Nederlander; Beth DeWoody and her daughter Kyle; Agnes Gund; Robin and Fred Seegal; Richard and Marcia Mishaan; Geoffrey Bradfield; Linda Fargo; Josephine Meckseper; Ross Bleckner; Alice Aycock (with whom we bemoaned the dismantling of her wonderful, whirling Park Avenue sculptures); Nicole Miller and Kim Taipale; Robert Wilson and Shaikha Paula Al Sabah Lilianne and Norman Peck; Gale and Ira Drukier; Peter Haveles; Sandra Lee; Alexandra Stanton; Mayme and Monty Hackett; Hilary and Wilbur Ross; Helen and Tim Schifter; Jamee and Peter Gregory; Lisa Jackson; Mark Mullett and Keith Bloomfield; Caroline Hirsch and Andrew Fox; Kelly and Jay Sugarman; Marcia Dunn and Jonathan Sobel; and many other equally cultured folks, who together helped raise over $1.2 million dollars. Anne Hearst and Jay McInerney Attendees rested two weeks; then most of the aforementioned donned their Arabian best, and turned out for Robert Wilson’s Watermill Center’s 21st Annual Benefit to support 100 international artists and their educational programs. The theme, “1,000 Nights and One Night: Sleepless Nights of the Scheherazade,” was inspired by international art patron Sheikha Paula Al Sabah. She and gallerist Leila Heller, who introduced her, outshone the rest of us pikers in their genuine Arabian silks and beads. Philip Glass, introducing Bob, quoted the late Leonard Bernstein: “To get anything done, you need a plan, and not enough time.” Prince Dmitri of Bob certainly is short on the latter. He is collaborating with Glass on a piece for Yugoslavia the Paris Opera, and also with Jim Jarmusch, who was there and debuted his Lady Gaga portrait series that night. The traditional walk through the woods was anything but, with buried opera singers, a horned trombonist, Jim Jarmusch and Margaret Russell unraveling naked weavers, a rubber band man, a bride being sprayed with something or other and other assorted performance pieces that reminded you that if you think you are avant garde or creative, you can’t hold a candle to this crowd. Simon de Pury, meanwhile, whipped the audience into an art-buying frenzy, and himself into a melty mess, and helped produce the recordbreaking $2.2 million dollars raised. Those on sensory overload included: Anne Hearst McInerney and Jay McInerney, Reem Acra, Kathy and Rick Hilton, Princess Khaliya Aga Khan, Bettina Zilkha, Prince Dimitri of Yugoslavia, Isabelle Huppert, Kim Cattrall, Eric and Sandra Ripert, JanMichaela de Pury and na Bullock, Jane Holzer, Fabiola Beracasa, Cecilia Dean and many other Sandra Ripert and Eric Ripert Simon de Pury guests who were surely a little looser, and more inspired, after that night. ✦ 34 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • SEPTEMBER 2014

MIC H A EL G ROSS The living room and sunroom beyond, where Princess Ashraf played cards

An Imperial Residence

One home, many big names. Built by William S. Paley on the old Beekman Estate, it passed from Albert and Mary Lasker to Princess Ashraf Pahlavi, who is selling it.

T

he phrase “empty nest” takes on new meaning in the case of 29 Beekman Place, a 15-room, six-story town house that was listed half a year ago, priced at $49,900,000. Its owner hasn’t visited the place in two years and has occupied it only sporadically since buying it in 1975. Back when the listing was new, a real estate blogger wrote, “It’s unclear who the current owner is.” Lately, much has been made of foreign nationals hiding real estate purchases, for a variety of reasons, through LLCs and offshore entities; but as 29 Beekman shows, that’s hardly a new phenomenon. In this case, though, the motive was more interesting than tax evasion or an oligarch hiding assets from his wife. Wansdown Properties of Curaçao, Netherlands Antilles, bought the place from a lawyer-developer in 1980, but he owned it only a day, if that. He had bought and sold it three days before the first presidential election in the then-new Islamic Republic of Iran. Iran’s previous ruler, Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, had fled his country a year and six days before the deed transferred. The house was sold by Ashraf Pahlavi, the Shah’s twin sister, and

bought by Wansdown, whose managing director was and remains Gholam Reza Golsorkhi, today a trustee of the Foundation for Iranian Studies, but then head of the Private Secretariat of Her Imperial Highness. Though her title was abolished shortly after the Shah’s departure from Iran, Golsorkhi remains as he was then, head of the 94-year-old Princess Ashraf ’s household. She now lives in Europe, according to Robert Armao, a longtime advisor to the Pahlavis. Listing broker Avida Ghaffari at Brown Harris Stevens won’t discuss the home’s owner. No. 29 wasn’t always imperial, but its provenance is long and distinguished. James Beekman, a descendant of a Dutch immigrant who arrived in what was then New Amsterdam in 1647, built a mansion on today’s Beekman Place in 1763. Left to a Beekman nephew, the estate was subdivided in 1865 and replaced by singlefamily dwellings. A four-story house rose at No. 29, and was bought in 1905 by a Gustav Staats, who owned it until his death. William S. Paley, whose father had just taken control of the Columbia Broadcasting radio network, was the next owner. He’d rented a house up the street after his 1932 marriage to Dorothy Hart Hearst, a former daughter-in-law of William Randolph Hearst; and in 1933,

Paley bought No. 29 from Staats’ estate “because we liked the little street so much,” he wrote in his memoir, As It Happened. He planned to modernize it, but his contractor told him that it wouldn’t cost much more to raze and replace it with a fireproof structure. Paley supervised Eldredge Snyder’s design of the $100,000 brick-and-limestone house; his wife supervised the interiors. It had many mirrored walls, to give the illusion of spaciousness; a curved staircase carpeted in zebra skin; and separate bedrooms for Bill and Dorothy. According to Paley’s biographer Sally Bedell Smith, a writer for the New Yorker shortly thereafter penned a catty description of the place,

which he’d seen on a charity tour, and the Paleys moved out, likely in reaction. Though Paley had put his heart and soul into it, “It had no charm or warmth for me,” he wrote. “It was antiseptic.” So, late in 1937, the couple (who would divorce ten years later) departed, transferring the place to Paley’s foundation, which in 1940 rented it to Albert and Mary Lasker, who bought it The sweeping staircase with in 1946. Dorothy Paley’s mirrors An advertising legend, Lasker also owned the Chicago Cubs and a majority interest in Pepsodent . His third wife Mary inherited half his $11.5 million fortune upon his death in 1952. The rest of the money went to their Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation, and Mary continued the couple’s philanthropy. She also continued to entertain lavishly, as they had together, with friends who ran the gamut from businessmen and politicians to fashion designers and spies. All came to 29 Beekman, which was designed for parties, with an oval dining room on the ground floor and a sunroom off the library a floor above, both full of light from dramatic East River views. The house had blindingly white interiors, the better to show off the

couple’s art collection, which Charlotte Curtis, the acute social observer, described as “a seemingly endless supply of Utrillos, Van Goghs, Cezannes, Manets, Picassos, Corots and Dufys.” Not to mention the five Matisses in the dining room and the two Picassos and a Braque in an upstairs bathroom. “And the soap dishes were all 18th century porcelains,” a visitor to the house raved to Curtis. Despite Paley’s experience, Lasker opened her garden terrace off the dining room to charity tours. There was another The reception room private terrace off the thirdfloor master bedroom. When Lasker sold her house to Princess Ashraf for $750,000, New York Times reporter Rita Reif described it as “one of New York’s most photographed—though smallish—mansions.” But its location was perfect for a woman whose greatest achievements (aside from being one of the first Persian women to abandon the veil) were at the nearby United Nations. She served as the head of Iran’s delegation to the General Assembly and on the UN Commission for Human Rights and addressed a women’s rights conference there the same year she bought her house. Like the Laskers, she entertained often. Ashraf was later accused of financial chicanery by the Islamic Republic, charges she vehemently denied. But to be on the safe side,

she transferred ownership of 29 Beekman to the Curaçao shell after the new Iranian regime claimed it as state property. She’d also bought No. 31 in 1978 for $900,000, and transferred that home to a separate Curaçao shell run by Golsorkhi in 1980. It was sold to the Tunisian government in 1992. The wisdom of the transfers seemed apparent a few months later when two armed intruders tried to muscle their way into No. 29. Confronted by guards, one of the would-be thieves was shot in the hand, and the duo fled. An anonymous caller claimed the intrusion was the work of an Islamic group, but it would later emerge that the gang that couldn’t rob straight were members of the Bonanno crime family who’d been told about riches in the house by a wayward bodyguard. “A bunch of idiots,” says Armao. “They copped a plea before it came to trial.” ✦

othing is immune to change. And over the years the Hamptons landscape has changed dramatically. Overdevelopment threatens natural beauty. Large houses pop up on former potato fields, traffic jams spill onto small back roads and people seem to crowd every corner. Yet people are still drawn East, now more than ever. In August, Avenue on the Beach hosted an intimate dinner amid the beautiful vines of Laura Sagaponack’s Wölffer Estate for an exclusive Nicklas group of Hamptons insiders to talk about why and Helena Gautier they continue to love the place despite all the change—and to feast on a fresh local food by Chef Shawn Jones. “I have been coming out here for a long time and the one thing that is really special to me is the gift of nature. It is the quality of the light; sometimes it just tingles here,” says Robert Lyster reflected in response to a question about why he returns to the Hamptons time and again. “The Hamptons is a cultural explosion. It has so much to offer,” added Cassandra Seidenfeld, who has been spending time here since childhood. “It’s about finding what matters to you,” said Alexandra Chantecaille “which for me is family and friends.” Bevin Butler agreed. “It’s about the people,” she said. “It forges relationships and creates stronger bonds because of the way you spend time out here.” The Hamptons’ boast of abundant wildlife, its overwhelming beauty of nature and sense of isolation were other attractions for those gathered for the meal. “But we can’t take it for granted,” warned Katherine Birch. “We have a responsibility to make sure that we leave it a better place.” On this late-summer evening, another summer was about to come to an end and September about to begin, filled with mellow sunlight and yellowing leaves. “It is an amazing month; it is as if someone turns the switch and the Hamptons magically change. The crowds are gone and all the people who love this place are here,” Arnie Rosenshein said of the month which starts the transition into fall. Olivia Chantecaille agreed: “In September, you have the place to yourself,” she said. “The light is the most magical and the water is the warmest; it’s almost like a fruit, it’s at its ripest, and ready to be picked.”

Joey Wölffer, who continues the family tradition running the vineyard with her husband, picked up on Olivia’s comment, pointing out that “ripeness” is literally true. “September is when we see the grapes at the fullest,” she said. So, for this group, clearly despite the changes, the Hamptons remain magical—especially, it might be added, when you’re driving at night and smelling damp earth on the fields. Or during the day, when you’re watching swarms of fireflies in mid-summer, when you’re enjoying the beach after 5 o’clock, watching the air fill with golden haze and huge lazy waves roll onto the shore. Far off, you’re seeing surfers in the water and, up close, happy dogs playing in the surf. Then there’s the way the bay looks at high tide, teeming with turtles and fish, low-flying white egrets and nesting ospreys. “Every year you come out here, you fall in love with it more and more,” says Laura Nicklas. It is the little things that make it feel like home. ✦

itting across from Georgina Chapman, it’s difficult not to think of Snow White. Like the character, Georgina has nearly jet-black hair, delicate features and porcelain white skin that’s just as flawless in person as it is in pictures. Then of course there’s the fairy tale-worthy evening gowns she wears from her fashion house Marchesa. The impact is an intimidating, almost icy beauty. The truth about Georgina Chapman is that her posh elegance is counterbalanced by an unexpected gregariousness. In fact, she is as easygoing as they come, with an infectious laugh that she uses frequently.

a privileged childhood. She split her time between London, an English boarding school, and a family home in the British countryside. When the holidays came, the family drove to another home in Italy each year, stopping in different locations along the way. But among all of the opportunities afforded her, it was oil painting that captured her imagination. “I used to find it very therapeutic in my teenage years,” she recalls. “When everything got too much, I’d go off and paint landscapes in the park. Weekends were just endless coffees and I sat there with my oil paints and music.”

good fortune of meeting, or rather re-meeting, Marchesa’s co-founder Keren Craig. “We instantly became good friends,” Georgina says. “In fact, when we first went to give each other our phone numbers in our address books—that seems like such an antiquated concept now!—we both already had each other’s numbers. We realized we had met when we were 16, so we’ve been friends for a very, very long time.” Keren and Georgina bonded over a love of travel and set out to explore Australia and Thailand when school was over. But, when Keren went home, Georgina still craved adventure.

“When I was my daughter’s age, I was cutting up clothes that my grandmother made. I wanted to make them look better!” “Georgina is not just a chic, pretty face,” says Cinema Society founder Andrew Saffir. “She’s whip smart, and disarmingly clever. Gosh, she makes me laugh!” And those clothes? “According to my daughter, Disney does much better dresses,” Georgina says with another big laugh. “According to her, I don’t have very good taste.” Like mother like daughter. “My mom says when I was my daughter’s age, I was cutting up all of these beautiful handmade clothes that my grandmother made,” Georgina says. “I wanted to make them look better!” Georgina’s parents, journalist Caroline Wonfor and Brian Chapman, director of Food Brands Group and creator of the Percol coffee brand, gave their daughter

Georgina also made her own clothing, cutting up and reworking garments from the Salvation Army. “When she was about 13, she taught herself how to sew and would design clothing for herself and for her dolls,” says Georgina’s brother, Marchesa CEO Edward Chapman. “Even at a young age, she would find ways to experiment with fashion. She took risks and favored daring designs.” After high school, Georgina headed to the Chelsea College of Art & Design for a foundation course—a year of trying different disciplines before deciding what to concentrate in. She began in sculpture and fine art before setting her sights on fashion design. It was there that Georgina had the

“I stayed on my own, much to my parents’ horror since I was only 18. I went all over on a shoestring budget for a year,” Georgina says. Her journey took her to Vietnam, Hong Kong, Nepal, the Himalayas, India and Bali. “It was an incredible sense of freedom and adventure. I remember I had a stick and attached it to the back of my backpack to dry my clothes on as I was walking.” Georgina felt a special connection to India, where her family had lived for many generations and where her grandmother was born. She maintains those close ties by using Indian artisans for much of Marchesa’s embroidery and actively supporting Magic Bus, an NGO that focuses

on molding the lives of Indian children by keeping them in school, promoting gender equality, teaching about hygiene and health and preparing them for careers. Georgina finally returned to London to study costume design at the Wimbledon School of Art. “It was very different starting with character and mood and putting clothing to text,” she says. “I knew that I was probably not going to be a costume designer as I always liked to march to the beat of my own drummer and be my own director. But I learned to make corsetry. I learned how to make armor! Very useful now with my Marchesa armor coming out,” Georgina jokes. Between classes, there were hijinks with Craig. “We both went through a bit of a rebellious phase; we would dye our hair blue or purple, play with outrageous makeup and dress dramatically, mixing prints and vintage garments with contemporary pieces,” says Keren. “Georgina was always making dresses to wear to parties—usually an hour before we had to leave!” Georgina and Keren had long discussed going into business together and after graduation, in 2004, they started a line. “We just thought we would go for it. I think if anyone had a real sense of what running a fashion business is like, no one would do it!” Georgina says with another big laugh. “You just go in with blind passion.” Their original concept was entirely different from today’s Marchesa: a commercial line of contemporary loungewear. But after a chance encounter, they made a sharp turn. The loungewear brand was a mere two weeks old when Georgina and Keren were invitated to a Louis Vuitton party. They whipped up a couple of dresses, just as they had in college, draping saris over corsets. Fate had it that they would be seated with the late stylist Isabella Blow, who helped launch the careers of designers like Alexander McQueen and John Galliano—and she asked them to design a dress for her.

“She was the one who said, ‘Why on earth would you be thinking of doing something contemporary when you should be doing eveningwear?” Georgina asks. “She really gave us the confidence to follow our passion. We followed that vision, and thank God.” The name Marchesa came from Luisa, Marchesa Casati Stampa di Soncino, an Italian heiress known for her eccentric and daring style, not unlike that of Isabella Blow. And that spirit is evident in the line’s “more is more” spin on gowns. Georgina conceptualizes the dresses and designs the silhouettes while Keren focuses her textile expertise on materials and embroidery. “Marchesa comes from my imagination and my mind. It’s my more fantastical self,” Georgina says. It is no surprise that Marchesa was an instant hit on the red carpet. Georgina enlisted the help of Hollywood agent Nancy Ryder, who suggested they send sketches for her clients. Renée Zellweger opted to wear a sari-inspired, strapless Marchesa dress for the 2004 London premiere of Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason and half of Hollywood soon followed. “Georgina’s dresses are as beautiful and lovely as she is,” says supermodel Helena Christensen, a friend and fan. “Her graceful, elegant and charming personality is in every thread of her creations. Wearing one of those pieces makes you feel special and magical.” Soon enough, retail came calling. Neiman Marcus not only wanted Marchesa’s gowns, but a diffusion line as well. “We borrowed someone’s work room,” Georgina recalls. “We would start at 6 pm and do a collection at night and on weekends. We were dyeing fabric in the men’s toilets. But we got it done and Neiman took [Marchesa and Notte by Marchesa] on.” Though the duo then moved to New York, where Marchesa has been based for a decade, the line will embrace its English roots with its 10th anniversary fashion show in London this month. The Marchesa brand has exploded

over the years, expanding into bridal, tabletop, fragrance, beauty, handbags, a daywear-focused diffusion line called Voyage and next, fine jewelry (initially, wedding bands and engagement rings), set to launch in October 2014 in partnership with Prestige Jewelry. And somehow, Georgina still finds time for special projects, like designing a stylish t-shirt for the New York Jets at the suggestion of close friend Suzanne Johnson, wife of team owner Woody Johnson. “Georgina is one of those rare individuals that truly found their calling,” Johnson says.

Zellweger, Naomi Watts, Quentin Tarantino, Anna Wintour and Graydon Carter, to name but a few. The groom had dramatically slimmed down. The bride, of course, wore Marchesa. The two welcomed daughter India Pearl in 2011 and son Dashiell in 2013. Becoming a mother has not slowed Georgina down one bit, in no small part due to her flexible schedule and supportive family. And she continues to change her husband for the better. “I love watching the great and powerful Harvey melt when she’s around. Now, that’s something to see!” says Andrew Saffir. These days, mornings are for the children. Georgina walks India to school each morning and she reads the kids a story and puts them to bed most nights, even if she goes out afterwards. The kids often spend

On top of parenthood, Georgina and Harvey continue to maintain an active social calendar, two heavy-hitting careers, and a number of charitable pursuits, including traveling with the UN to Jordan to bring attention to the Syrian refugee crisis. One of Georgina’s most prominent appearances each year is at the Metropolitan Museum’s gala and this year, at the opening of the Costume Center’s Charles James: Beyond Fashion exhibit, she sparked some additional headlines. News leaked that Harvey had cut a deal to license the Charles James brand name with an option to buy it, and Georgina and her brother would serve as creative consultants—without telling his wife about her new position! “I absolutely knew nothing about it!” Georgina insists. “I only found out

“If anyone had a real sense of what running a fashion business is like, no one would do it!”

Georgina’s personal life is as high profile as her brand. When she began dating media mogul Harvey Weinstein in 2005, it raised more than a few eyebrows. In addition to his astronomical wealth, Weinstein was known for an explosive temper and a far-fromfashion-forward appearance. He’d just finalized a divorce and is nearly 25 years older than Georgina, who was then fresh out of college. It could not have been a more unexpected pairing. Yet the couple has not only endured but thrived. They married in 2007 on their Connecticut estate with a who’s who in attendance: Rupert Murdoch, Ronald O. Perelman, Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, Cameron Diaz, Renée

afternoons at Marchesa’s offices. “India loves what I do and seeing all of the dresses; she loves coming into the office. Dashy, too, except he’s less interested in fabrics. Just give him a ball or something and he’s very happy,” says Georgina. With Keren’s children the same age, the offices are often the site of playdates. It doesn’t hurt that Georgina’s mother recently moved to New York to be closer to her family and lend a helping hand. “I’m very lucky that I have my own business, so I have the freedom to bring my kids into work whenever I want to; I have the freedom to leave work whenever I need to,” Georgina says.

about it in the car on my way to the Met. Harvey called and said, ‘If anyone asks you about Charles James we just acquired it!’ I was like, ‘You did?’ It was as big a surprise to me as it was to everyone else.” It’s an exciting development for Georgina who has long admired James’ pattern cutting and workmanship, even referencing his work in her designs for Marchesa. Georgina’s story is far from over. But it seems clear that this Snow White has found both success and her prince and is well on her way to living happily ever after. ✦

New York is a city of superlatives: the biggest, the loudest, the brightest, the tallest; the latest, the earliest; the richest and most powerful. But what about the sexiest? Our town doesn’t ooze blatant sex appeal the way that cities like Miami and São Paulo do, nor do New Yorkers worship youth for youth’s ’s sake as they do sake or pulchritude for Playboy’s in L.A. But there are most certainly New Yorkers Elisabeth von with that rare combination of good looks, Thurn und Taxis confidence, charm and a little je ne sais quoi that fuse together to form an intoxicatingly irresistible individual. If you know where to look you can find some of the sexiest people on Earth ’s annual offering of our city’s right here. AVENUE’s most irresistible proves it doesn’t matter if you’re young or old, gay or straight, single or married, well-bred or under-fed. Feast on our choices or feel free to disagree. YOUNG HOLLYWOOD (THERE AND HERE)

Assouline and Clairborne Swanson Frank have teamed up again (following the success of American Beauty, 2012), this time capturing the young and fresh faces of Hollywood. To our pleasant surprise, we’ve learned that a number of these beautiful young women have New York roots, trained in New York or are currently residents. Presenting: Young Hollywood, with a New York spin. Designer Michael Kors, who wrote the introduction to the book, adds a running commentary, exclusively for AVENUE.

Ireland Basinger Baldwin actress

Ireland Baldwin, the daughter of Kim Bassinger and Alec Baldwin, launched her career with a swimwear editorial for the New York Post when she was 17. She’s L.A. born, but with the last name Baldwin and an IMG modeling contract, she is one of us as well.

“It’s about glamour and indulgence, about knowing what you want and not being afraid to go after it.” SEPTEMBER 2014 • AVENUE MAGAZINE | 75

“It’s the spirit of women who are making their own paths in the industry, women who have opinions and talents and passion and ambition. They’re not just in Hollywood or New York—they’re in London, Shanghai, Tokyo, Paris—and they’re making their voices heard around the world.”

Leven Rambin actress Texas-born Leven Rambin launched her career by moving to New York, where she was discovered and cast as a regular on ABC’s soap opera All My Children. She now resides in L.A. but exhibits a New York state of mind; she is both a fashion and philanthropy enthusiast. Look out for her New York Fashion Week coverage in Paper Magazine and Page Six Magazine, and find her on the boards of autism and animal charities.

Quentin Jones filmmaker and illustrator

Quentin Jones is originally a Londoner, but now calls a rent-controlled walk-up in the East Village home. She is making a name for herself as a mixed-media artist and filmmaker; she counts Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Victoria Beckham as clients. She works out of a Bleecker Street studio—where she is also expanding her craft into photography, and can be seen out on the town with friends like Waris Ahluwalia (see this issue’s World According To)

Olivia Luccardi actress

n 1898, Duke Fulco di Verdura was born into a lush world of beauty and elegance. The Sicilian aristocrat, who would later become one of the master jewelers of the 20th Century, first as a designer for Chanel, then for Paul Flato and, finally, his eponymous Verdura, spent a charmed childhood in the family’s extraordinary bougainvillea-covered estate, Villa Niscemi, in Palermo. There, he was surrounded by priceless art and noble décor, by expansive gardens and a small zoo’s worth of animals (including a camel named Momo and a pair of ornery baboons). He was exposed to a circus of extravagant costume parties, as well as formal affairs and evenings straight out of the 18th century. All this extravagance and pampering shaped the young Fulco Verdura into an imaginative bon vivant with a sharp eye for beauty. “It was all a question of civilization and background,” explains Reinaldo Herrera, who, together with his wife Carolina and daughter Patricia Lansing, is curating an unprecedented retrospective of Verdura’s work in honor of the 75th anniversary of the brand. An aristocrat himself, Reinaldo grew up with parents who were friends of the duke’s. Reinaldo met Verdura when he was just a child, visiting the duke’s shop with his parents. Later in life, he became a loyal customer—first buying gifts for girlfriends while he was in his 20s—and then, with Carolina, becoming friends with the duke.

“It wasn’t celebrity clients or society women; it was people of great imagination and taste.” —Reinaldo Herrera “Fulco had this wonderful European-Sicilian-Italian-Baroque family background,” says Reinaldo. “He was surrounded by those wonderful Sicilian and Italian palaces, and it trains the eye to beauty. He had it trained very young.” After World War I, Palermo and Venice became popular destinations for movers and shakers from across Europe and America. At that time, young Verdura met Linda and Cole Porter, who would become his lifelong friends, a relationship that helped set his course on more than one occasion. The first of those moments came at a party at the Porter palazzo in Venice when the American couple introduced young Verdura to Coco Chanel. It was under Chanel that Verdura’s talent first flourished. She brought Verdura to Paris to design textiles for the company, and once there, he started reworking Coco’s personal démodé jewelry. Recognizing his talent, the famous designer then hired Verdura as a Chanel jewelry designer. “He had a great imagination and knew how to incorporate the beauty of art into his jewelry,” says Carolina. “He knew how to make it modern and fashionable.” In addition to designing some of Chanel’s most iconic pieces—particularly her famous Maltese cross cuffs; Coco often wore his original pair—he became her friend and social escort of choice. He spent the late 1920s charming society hosts and guests and became a regular among the likes of Picasso, Hemingway, the Rothschilds, Josephine Baker and many more. “Fulco was first and foremost an artist,” says Carolina. But, “as a person, he was quite witty.” Reinaldo echoes this: “It was all in conversation; it wasn’t planned. People who are witty are very quick and it’s effervescent; in one moment, out the other . . . and it’s gone.” Verdura’s sparkling conversation, wild imagination and appetite for fun made him one the most popular party guests and hosts of that time. In 1934, Verdura sailed to the United States with his friend Baron Nicolas de Gunzburg. In this country Verdura immediately connected with the progressive society, as the pair drove a convertible from Palm Beach to Hollywood. When they arrived in Los Angeles, he reconnected with the Porters, who introduced Verdura around town. As Hollywood’s Golden Age moved into full swing, the demand for glamour, and appreciation for the Sicilian duke’s elegant influence, took off like wildfire. Stars like Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo and Joan Crawford became loyal customers. Diana Vreeland introduced Verdura to Paul Flato—then known as the go-to jeweler of the stars—and he again found himself working as a designer. “Verdura for Flato” designs became must-haves for tastemakers across the country. 82 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • SEPTEMBER 2014

As it turned out, Flato wasn’t running an honest business and eventually served time in prison, but avoided additional charges by fleeing to Mexico (though his originals still sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars at auction). Verdura himself escaped Flato’s operation a few years before it imploded and moved back cross-country to New York. With the backing of Cole Porter and Vincent Astor, the duke opened the doors to his upstairs shop at 712 Fifth Avenue, in 1939. With its mix of society, fashion and tastemakers, New York proved to be the perfect setting—and offered the perfect clientele—for Verdura. “It wasn’t celebrity clients or society women,” explains Reinaldo. “It was people of great imagination and taste. Because his jewelry is not about the size of the stones, but about the quality of his designs and the amusement of what he did. That was his truest work: amusing objects to wear.” Women like Millicent Rogers, Slim Keith, Liz Whitney Tippett and of course Linda Porter were his loyal clients; Babe Paley became Verdura’s muse and he sailed through the rest of his career as a high-society jeweler until he retired in 1973. “You could have a 25-carat diamond mounted in an amusing way; that made it look as if it were costume jewelry and it wasn’t. It was a great refinement and elegance; it wasn’t to show off, it was just showing something pretty,” says Reinaldo. The exhibit, The Power of Style: Verdura at 75 will be on view in a new gallery space adjacent to the company’s flagship store beginning October 14. The involvement of the Herreras as curators shows how intertwined Verdura, who died in 1978, has remained with generations of the most stylish and elegant New Yorkers. Carolina recently gave Reinaldo a pair of “Night and Day” cufflinks, one of Verdura’s most famous designs, originally commissioned by Linda Porter to celebrate the success of her husband’s song “Night and Day.” “It has always been one of my favorites—favorite songs and favorite cufflinks!” says Reinaldo. So much so that he had Verdura make a similar compact—with one side colored blue, with diamonds as stars and a moon, and the other side decorated with a gold sun set on turquoise—to give Carolina for Christmas. For the Herreras, going through Fulco Verdura’s archives while planning the upcoming exhibit was sheer delight. “Whenever I think I’ve seen the one I like the best, a few days later I see another one I like even more. It’s quite amazing,” says Reinaldo. “There’s nothing not thought out in his work. [We have gotten to see] the fascinating, convolutedness of his mind: surreal thoughts manifested into reality.” Alongside archival material, the exhibit will also show more than 150 of the duke’s original jewels and objets d’art, a selection of his gouache designs, his personal miniature paintings and rare period photos. Bringing all of these elements together in the same place for the first time will surely prove a true testament to Verdura’s unique perspective. “His jewelry exudes elegance through his unique interpretations,” says Carolina. “And he had a great sense of humor. The tiara he designed for Mrs. Whitney when she was ambassador in London—they both wanted something that was definitely American. So what did he do? He designed her a tiara with a feather that represented the Native American—it’s a fantastic tiara and a great compliment to both Native American and Anglo-Saxon civilizations. His archives are like reading a diary because they are full of people that you know about—and it shows that they had great taste.” ✦

n the modern-day fairy tale world of New York, Cinderella’s pumpkin becomes a taxi, glass slippers are red-soled Louboutins; and you are well-advised to arrive before midnight. Otherwise, you’re bound to miss your (working) prince. Those were our thoughts as we teamed up exclusively with Alice +Olivia CEO and creative director Stacey Bendet to photograph her fairy tale inspired Fall 2014 collection. According to Bendet, “Sometimes I think my life in New York is one giant fairy tale; every day, I walk into my office playing dress-up, designing clothes and being with people I love.” Each of our models portrays a special character who is both dear to our hearts and to the real life fantasy that is Manhattan. The big apple is the forbidden fruit that we all savor, so let’s fall into the narrative of happily ever after with our visual fantasy of once upon a time . . . SEPTEMBER 2013 • AVENUE MAGAZINE | 87

LET’S TALK ABOUT MONEY Our panelists of experts weigh in on the financial issues most pertinent to the New York women they advise. moderated by Haley

T

he financial landscape for American women has changed dramatically in the last century, and nowhere is that more true than in New York City. Here, as elsewhere, there is really no longer an allotted path for how a woman can or should walk toward success; women already have achieved access on multiple fronts, from the home front to industry to philanthropy. Given how much more multifaceted societal roles are for women, finance and how women regard their role in cultivating and protecting their own and their families’ fortunes is also changing. Our panel of experts, introduced at right, includes wealth management industry veterans who work hard to stay on top of the issues affecting modern families. Families enlisting their expertise come in all forms and structures, and all have different needs, but the advisors say they do observe some trends, which they discussed at our recent, semi-annual roundtable discussion. “I think there’s a long history here that is not [conducive to women learning about finance],” explains Tony Guernsey. “Parents, or grandparents or great grandparents hid the finances and it was gauche to talk about money; you just didn’t talk about money and you certainly didn’t talk about money at the dining table. I think there’s a real built-in years-and-years sort of bias against this.” This issue dates back to Colonial times, when British Commonwealth

law limited a woman’s rights to property—including wages, inheritance and ownership of property in her own name. These issues were a catalyst of the Women’s Rights movement, and though we’ve certainly come a long way, on many different fronts, laws are still being challenged and changed—as recently as the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009. Society often lags behind the law and women helming family finance is a

relatively new phenomenon that many families are navigating for the first time as, depending on a family’s structure, the Baby Boomers, Generation X-ers and Millennials come into an age of influence. “The trend has changed whereby the ownership and knowledge of a family’s net worth [by its various members] is more equal,” says Guernsey. Still, our panelists say that men continue to make up the majority of financial decision makers, but that is changing all the time. “In a typical client relationship, the man has more often been the breadwinner. But, on average, his wife is going to outlive him, so we seek to get ahead of that and develop a relationship with his wife,” says Jonathan Hochberg. Whether it is as a precaution against death, tragedy or divorce; or just to establish a more comprehensive picture of what a family’s goals are, the panelists say leveling the information playing field for high net worth families is important to them. “No one wants to admit when they don’t know something, so it’s incumbent on us to create venues to bring that information to [the reluctant party] in a non-threatening way,” says Jennifer Lee. “If, let’s say, a woman’s husband is in charge of all the finances, and makes all the financial decisions, what can she do to get more involved to be better prepared in case she ends up divorced or widowed or . . . some sort of tragic accident occurs?” Current life expectancy data says that American women can expect to outlive men by five years. And the margin widens at the top; 80 percent of centenarians are women, according to the U.S. Census. Combine that with the fact that over 50 percent of marriages end in divorce, and the numbers clearly indicate that a majority of women will end up in charge of their financial affairs for some period of their post-marriage lives. “We had a prospective client: an elderly man, probably in his 70s. He was working with an advisor who was pretty transactional, but he and his wife wanted an organization that his wife could work with in a more collaborative way,” says Doris Meister. “He said, ‘I can control this advisor but I don’t want my wife having to deal with this.’ He said, ‘She’s going to outlive me; she’s in better health and the numbers are not on my

side, so I want to sort this out before I am gone and her relationship with the advisor becomes a disaster.”’ Both investors and advisors are realizing that these individualized relationships matter, because different people have different psychological and philosophical approaches to money and investing. And, even if it is only a small role, gender does play a part in how people think, interact and respond. “I think some of this is also style and approach; it’s tough to generalize about women because there isn’t this monolithic, homogeneous group of women—just like there isn’t for men,” says Lisa Whitcomb. “But, the research shows that women do approach money a little bit differently. On average, they tend to think more holistically, so it’s more about the purpose of the money and what the money’s going to do for the family as opposed to . . . ‘How much is it? And what does it look like?’”

“I think the most successful families we’ve seen financially, are those that are involved with philanthropy as a family.” —Jennifer Lee This is also a generational issue. A study commissioned by the Michael Bloomberg Foundation found that the rapidly growing tech and information industry is now New York’s second largest. Though finance is still number one, this statistic reveals that a growing number of young, capable minds are exploring other options, and so may not be as well informed about their family’s wealth and how to maintain their legacy as their parents were. “We just [met with] a $200 million [net worth] family from the Midwest last week; the wife and two daughters—one’s a chef, one’s in theater,” says Guernsey. “The kids have no concept about the family’s wealth . . . the wife’s involvement is limited to having a credit card, and I’m saying ‘Talk to me about money!’ We, as financial advisors and fiduciaries, do an excellent job in preparing the money for our clients, but no one is properly focused—parents and grandparents included— SEPTEMBER 2014 • AVENUE MAGAZINE | 95

on educating and preparing their heirs for their wealth. What used to be called the ‘soft issues’ of private banking (financial training for the next generation), albeit women or men, is now a core platform for all wealth management providers worldwide.” The landscape is changing, whether financial advisors are trained for it or not, so our panelists say that it is really up to them and their colleagues to change their approach in order to widen their scopes and facilitate relationships with modern families. “We encourage our clients to ask the right questions, be it about performance, asset allocation or anything else they need to understand more fully,” says Meister. “But, I think it’s equally important for us to ask our clients more questions, so we can better understand what their goals are. And this is especially important for women, who tend to see their wealth as a tool to do things for their loved ones and their community.” The idea is that there will always be one person, or maybe one generation that is more active and better informed than other members of the family. But oftentimes, that person is not the only one making decisions. Then there is the issue of trusts and bestowments, which don’t require the receiving party’s consent, but the advisors agree that if the money, property or other asset is coming down the pipeline, the individual on the receiving end should be prepared. “One thing we’ve done on that is just taking the meetings out of the traditional setting, when you find there is a spouse or a child in need of education,” Hochberg chimes in. “We offer to meet the spouse or children individually, as opposed to with the more financially savvy family member, where they may feel overwhelmed and think they are slowing the pace of the meeting and asking ‘silly questions.’” This education process is also about protecting their clients’ wealth. Advisors encourage clients to look at things like pre-nups and trusts as asset protection and understand that they are not just for billionaires, but something advisable for those with any amount of wealth. “In a world where everything is available on the Internet and very transparent—your family’s wealth, your family’s reputation, your

family’s legacy and asset protection becomes even more important,” says Lee, offering another reason why everyone in the family should take an interest in the portfolio and know their rights. “It’s not too hard to figure out how much someone’s house is worth, and children and family members become very public figures without necessarily intending to do so,” she says. Speaking of legacy and reputation, one topic that also helps engage entire families is philanthropy. “When we look at people’s needs and goals, we always look at personal goals, philanthropic goals and legacy goals,” says Whitcomb. “I think there’s an evolving philosophy about children and how much you should leave children. We’ve had a number

“The man has more often been the bread winner. But, on average, his wife is going to outlive him, so we seek to get ahead of that.” —Jonathan Hochberg of discussions with clients over the last couple of years to start exploring that. What is enough? And what should go to philanthropy? And how do you make those decisions and when? When should children receive money? And that becomes a really interesting conversation.” “I think the most successful families we’ve seen financially, are those that are involved with philanthropy as a family,” says Lee. “They have an idea about what they want to do; they involve their children very early on and it helps facilitate a core value for that family.” The advisors say that philanthropy can be one of the more interesting ways to teach and engage the non-involved family members about money and the power of what it can do. “It doesn’t matter whether we’re talking about your Ferrari collection or the money you give to philanthropy,” Lee explains. “The way you spend your money and how you prioritize that is really a statement of your values. Part of our job is to make sure that we have a good grasp, without judgment, of what a family’s values are and help them prioritize and make sure we’re helping them succeed financially—that’s our job.” ✦

ucked away on the eleventh floor of an unassuming Flatiron office tower is one of New York’s best kept secrets: the private atelier of master goldsmith and award winning jewelry designer Donna Distefano. The jewelry is a harmonious combination of Old World luxury and modern sensibilities rendered in 22 karat and 18 karat gold with diamonds and precious gemstones. On a recent visit, Distefano discussed her inspiration, the milestone of twenty years in business, and what her socially prominent clientele can expect to see next. Holding dual citizenship in Italy and the United States, Distefano makes frequent trips to Italy to draw upon the rich history and traditions that inform her work. While her private atelier has been in business for twenty years, Distefano has had the luxury of being a lifelong artist whose past experiences include creating jewelry reproductions for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Today, her association with the Met is primarily social; she frequents exhibition openings, maintains close relationships with curators and exhibition specialists, but also does plenty of research among the historical jewelry collections with which she is intimately familiar. The influence of history in Distefano’s work is easy to spot for those with a background in decorative arts. Techniques seen in ancient Roman chains and Byzantine pendants are painstakingly created anew. Remaining true to historical goldsmithing techniques and the European tradition of the atelier where luxury items are created in the same intimate environment in which they are sold, Distefano offers a decidedly unique and refreshing alternative for jewelry collectors. 102 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • SEPTEMBER 2014

Where do you find your inspiration? I discover wells of inspiration in poetry, particularly The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri. I created a ring based on the final canto that contained diamonds and fragments of meteorite. Dante’s poetry took me to a celestial place in my mind, allowing me to incorporate so much of the symbolism in the design. Since its creation, the ring has been in the Forbes Galleries and will next appear in the Carnegie Museum. Poetry can take a person to some surprising places. I am also inspired by art in other mediums, particularly paintings. I have been known to recreate tiny Renaissance portraiture on precious metal and frame it in gold and gemstones. What advice can you offer to aspiring collectors? Advice for collectors, whether they are collecting my jewelry or someone else’s, is that they should choose pieces that delight them, jewels that make them smile. I would recommend a collector do a little bit of research. Go to Sotheby’s, go to Christie’s and look at the auction books. Provenance can greatly impact the value of a piece. If a collector is thinking of jewelry as an investment, gold is a safe harbor. It has always had value and always will. Important rubies in particular are difficult to find these days, and I have seen huge leaps in price in gold, platinum, and rubies over the last ten years. Diamonds tend to be more stable; they hold their value but do not necessarily increase in a meaningful way. But I personally do not recommend collecting for investment purposes. Jewelry is emotional and a huge part of what I do is custom work, creating pieces that cannot be found elsewhere. These jewels reflect the sensibilities of the individual for which they are created and hold great significance to their owners. My collectors often collect around a

decorative frames. Those are the kinds of pieces that I want to explore more; things that will bring joy to the owner but remain in their home. So, tell me more about your new collection. I refer to my atelier as “where metal and fire meet love” because I have had the distinct privilege of creating jewelry to celebrate the most joyous occasions in life. Part of the pleasure of being a jeweler is knowing who is about to get engaged, or which woman is about to be significantly gifted. I hold all my collectors in such high esteem and discretion is paramount. It is an honor to contribute to their celebrations through my art but it’s

“Jewelry is emotional and a huge part of what I do is custom work, creating pieces that cannot be found elsewhere.” certain design motif or gemstone palette that resonates with them. They are imbued with the distinct personality of the individual requesting them and they are destined to become heirlooms. After receiving various accolades for your unique designs, what do you see as being the next step? I have a fascination with objets d’art and the concept of adorning not only the individual, but also that person’s environment. A lot of jewelry worn on the body is not visible to the wearer unless they are looking into a mirror. You can enjoy a ring or a bracelet, but you can’t see your earrings or any necklace shorter than princess length unless looking at your own reflection. I would like to carry my aesthetic to the environment, something you could put on top of a Hepplewhite pier table like an ètui or a perfume bottle, even a minaudière. Many of my collectors possess ancestral portraits so naturally I am intrigued by

nothing I can speak about. Contributing significant jewels to my favorite charities gives me a public outlet for my work, but my new collection is intensely personal. It reflects my own professional journey as a jewelry historian, but it is also heavily informed upon by the personal journeys that we experience as human beings. You will see influences from antiquity such as Egyptian and Roman infused with Renaissance techniques and Victorian motifs combined in an edgy, modern, and unexpected way totally aligned with the zeitgeist. It takes the concept of heirloom jewelry to an entirely new level. I call it Love Beyond Life. ✦ SEPTEMBER 2014 • AVENUE MAGAZINE | 103

A question for one of the city’s top real estate experts . . . THE IMPORTANCE OF FAIR HOUSING LAWS

jack deutsch

A

Hall F. Willkie, President, Brown Harris Stevens Residential Sales 212.906.9203 or hwillkie@bhsusa.com

“The purpose of fair housing laws is to make certain that everyone is treated fairly and equally and not discriminated against.”

s New Yorkers, we know that diversity is what makes our city so vibrant and productive. To protect everyone’s rights in housing, there are fair housing laws that apply to residential real estate transactions. There are federal laws (based on the Civil Rights Act and the Fair Housing Act), and there are New York State laws and New York City laws that govern fair housing. In New York City, we are required to adhere to all three. Specifically protected categories are age, citizenship, familial status, handicap/disability, marital status, national origin, occupation, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation and lawful source of income. The purpose of fair housing laws is to make certain that everyone is treated fairly and equally and not discriminated against. Although real estate brokers serve their clients in a fiduciary capacity, these laws supersede their obligation to clients. Sometimes, for even the most concerned and law-abiding professional citizens and brokers, this can be neither intuitive nor obvious. Some acts that may stem from a sense of kindness or concern could be discriminatory and actually break the law. For example, one might think that a broker is doing a good job by not presenting property that lacks handicapped access to someone who is disabled. That practice, however, would be a violation of law. These laws are noble and good. Real estate agents are trained to ensure that customers and clients are treated according to law. ✦

THE

A G D E FIERS PIONEERS IN DERMATOLOGY AND PLASTIC SURGERY

Dr. Jody and Dr. Elie Levine, the Yale Educated Powerhouse Duo of Plastic Surgery & Dermatology of NYC How do you define the symbiotic relationship you describe with your practice? DJ: Our symbiotic relationship makes our practice unique and valuable. Primarily, we can offer each patient exactly what is needed for the ideal treatment. We provide a full spectrum of services from dermatology to plastic surgery, covering all medical and aesthetic needs. If a patient comes to see me, but is better suited to see my husband, I will confer with him, and vice versa. Similarly, Elie and I learn from each other’s expertise, honing our knowledge and skills beyond our specialties. In Manhattan, there are dermatology practices that hire plastic surgeons, but their relationship is not one of total and mutual collaboration. We are uniquely positioned to offer exactly what is in our patients’ best interests and thereby obtain the finest results and greatest patient satisfaction. DE: When we set out to create the most comprehensive cosmetic practice in the city, we strived to establish an environment where no matter the patients’ needs, they would be addressed at our office. This atmosphere is something we continue to cherish and ingrain in our friendly staff. A common important question patients may have is whether they actually need something invasive or whether their goals can be met with a non-invasive procedure. There is a vast amount of information available regarding cosmetic procedures and sometimes, this leads to more questions than answers. Jody and I provide these answers in an unbiased and most knowledgeable fashion. There is a nuanced art to cosmetics, and Jody and I work together to accomplish this synergy. What are some of the newest procedures or treatments that are taking the industry by storm? DE: There are a plethora of innovations taking the industry by storm, but with particular emphasis to cosmetic plastic surgery, the foremost would be 3D imaging. This exciting technology allows the patient and doctor to determine what aesthetic improvements can be made prior to surgery. Our consultation process involves Vectra XT 3D imaging. This allows us to explore exactly what the patient is looking for. It is a spectacular tool giving patients a window to their future while establishing reasonable expectations. It can be utilized in a wide range of procedures including: rhinoplasty (nasal contouring), breast augmentation and other breast procedures, liposuction, face and neck lifts, laser resurfacing and more. Another exciting innovation is the NeoGraft hair transplant. As we expand the scope of our cosmetic practice, we have widened our hair loss treatments to include the best transplant options available today. NeoGraft is a new system that allows us to transfer individual hairs, as opposed to previous methods involving cutting skin from the back of the scalp. This allows for a virtually scar-less system and has been popular with both men and women. DJ: One example of continued research and advancement in dermatology is in the laser arena. New studies surrounding one of my favorite procedures, the BBL photofacial, shows that not only does this treatment improve one’s skin tone, erasing the pigmentary damage from years in the sun, but it also changes the proteins produced by one’s skin to match those which are produced by younger, less damaged skin. “Forever Young BBL” is the term for our

new protocol for maintenance treatments that help to improve skin at the cosmetically visible and the molecular level. Another advancement in the field of dermatology is the recent wave of fillers that have been in use in Europe and which will soon obtain FDA approval in the United States. These fillers enhance our palette for cosmetic rejuvenation. Lastly, the topical skin care products we manufacture and offer to our patients continue to improve with the newest ingredients that are most effective for the skin. In addition to your unique blend of medical aesthetics do you offer any special recovery practices? DJ: A maximized recovery is essential to our practice tenet of all-encompassing, top-notch medical care. We guide our patients through the recovery phase and enhance healing with the best available methodologies including laser or light based treatments, oral supplements, and topical skin care. LED light is one example of a modality used to aid in recovery by decreasing inflammation of the skin. Bruising can be lessened with arnica and bromelain as well as with BBL treatments that we offer post-procedure. We also guide our patients’ diets to minimize bruising and optimize healing. Bromelain, for example, derived from the stems of pineapples, is an extract with a mixture of protein-digesting enzymes and proteases, clinically shown to achieve anti-inflammatory results. Hence, eating pineapple is a nice way to improve healing. In addition, we offer the services of a medical esthetician who is highly trained in skin recovery and offers lymphatic drainage massage as well as skincare advice to achieve the maximum results post-procedure. DE: I am super-vigilant about scar management, post-surgery. The vast majority of our patients heal beautifully and part of this has to do with meticulous post-procedural care. I typically see my patients the day after surgery and then weekly and monthly for up to a year for most procedures, large and small. I also utilize tools such as topical silicone, scar massage, bleaching agents, and a variety of lasers to treat scars. These post-surgery laser treatments are free-of-charge as they are part of the surgery process for our patients. Being proactive with post-surgical care ensures maximum results as quickly as possible and falls in line with our message of providing the full spectrum, ultimate experience.

NEW TECHNOLOGY FOR ADVANCED HAIR RESTORATION A Change That Will Last You a Lifetime.

DR. KEITH R. DURANTE, MD. FACS 786 Montauk Hwy West Islip, NY 11795 T: 631.669.3700/631.620.2020 E: longislandneograft@gmail.com W: Longislandneograft.com Offices also located in Manhattan and Southampton

It’s difficult to imagine, but the average time people spend contemplating a hair transplant procedure is approximately five to seven years. During that time the emotional turmoil people experience can be debilitating. And as time passes, making this decision becomes harder and harder; for some it can be all-consuming and lead to severe depression, profoundly affecting quality of life: the ability to live happily, the desire for intimacy, even the capacity to make everyday life decisions that we often take for granted. Patients routinely tell me that their hair loss has forced them to wear a baseball cap or hat throughout the day . . . during both business and leisure time. After discussing their condition, I often have to ask: “Would you mind, please, removing your hat so I can examine you?” Patients do comply, but with hesitation. I sense the embarrassment, the shame, the extent to which hair loss has disrupted their life and sense of self worth. As a board-certified surgeon who is fellowship-trained in microvascular surgery and has been in private practice for over 25 years, I never imagined I’d find synergies between treating a patient for baldness or other hair loss and caring for patients with a serious disease such as cancer. But in fact I have. Most of us understand that when people have a severe, perhaps even a life-threatening illness, they have reason to be sad and depressed and lose their passion for life. Having seen hundreds of patients for hair loss, I know that living with this condition often has the same impact. It does not have to be this way. There is a procedure available today that can change your life. As a microvascular surgeon, I am acutely focused on minimally invasive procedures that prevent scarring and other unsightly markings. Technology for hair replacement has advanced substantially and the results we are seeing today are truly remarkable. I am able to offer a solution for men and women suffering from hair loss without the use of plugs, cutting or suturing or anything more than minimal discomfort. The procedure is performed in the privacy of my office in just one day. Whether you seek a permanent solution for your scalp or eyebrows, beard or mustache thinning, baldness or even an unsightly scar, I encourage you to contact me for a no-fee consultation. This is a change you can make today that will last you the rest of your life! It is the biggest and most positive step you can take toward your total well-being. You will be happier than you have been in years. Simply put: You will look younger and feel so much better!

THE

A G D E FIERS PHYSICALLY DEFYING AGE: NO LONGER AN IDEA OUT OF REACH Talking to expert Dr. Glashow

When it comes to looking great, New Yorkers spare no expense. Whether it’s fashion, cosmetics or healthcare, we want only the best and will not settle for less. We all want to look young, 50 is the new 30 and with that being said, we must remember that if one looks 30 but feels much older and can not perform physically as one should then looking the part simply isn’t filling it. Defying age seems like an impossible achievement but with the knowledge and technologies that we have today, we have the ability to not only look young but feel young within our bodies into our later years. Advancements in Sports Medicine Orthopedics, have opened the door and allowed opportunities to preserve our bodies joints and tendons more efficiently than we have seen yet to date. One may ask, how this is possible? and it starts with addressing the physical issues you have today. If you feel something, say something. You know your own body best and putting off any clicking or discomfort you may feel today can lead to much larger complications in the future. Preserving your joints can and will help one feel as young as they look. Advancements in sports medicine have allowed us to perform partial knee replacements at the earliest signs of joint degradation with precise instrumentation, avoiding full joint replacement which is far more intrusive with a much longer down time. Rotator cuff repairs are now being performed with the smallest incision and shortest down time for the patient than ever in history, as well. Arthroscopic technologies are far more advanced along with the facilities these procedures are performed in. Other advancements in medicine such as Biologics prove to assist in healing after surgical procedures and can also be used as a nonsurgical option for certain injuries that in the past had no other option. Patients can now walk in to a state of the art concierge environment on an outpatient basis, return home the same day and be back on their feet performing and feeling better than before, quicker than ever before, due to these technological advancements and the professionals that utilize them. With the access and information we currently have within Sports Medicine we find that the idea of “bending the aging curve” is attainable if we keep up with our bodies and address the little issues that may be bothering you today. As Co-Chief of Sports Medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center and the Chief Medical Officer/ team physician for the Philadelphia 76ers, Dr. Glashow and his associate Dr. Bryan Hanypsiak combine the best of cutting-edge academic medicine and rehab for injuries of the knee, shoulder, elbow and hip.

IF YOU FEEL SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING. You know your own body best and putting off any clicking or discomfort you may feel today can lead to much larger complications in the future.

COSMETIC DENTISTRY EXPERTISE Two Questions with Dr. Jeffrey Dorfman

What is the first thing you tell people who come to you seeking cosmetic advice? I tell people seeking cosmetic dentistry to do the least amount of work necessary but to obtain that work at the highest level of care. It is easy to offer all patients a full mouth of porcelain veneers at significant cost, but many times that is not the most appropriate care. It is much more difficult for a cosmetic dentist and the porcelain ceramist to place fewer veneers and then make them blend naturally with adjacent natural teeth. In addition, most dental porcelain I see is quite unattractively made, in one overly bright—fake—color without any characterization to make the teeth look natural. These are some of the reasons why our porcelain veneers cost more than those of most other top New York cosmetic dentists. Tell us about some of the age-defying procedures you offer. Some age-defying procedures can be very conservative, painless and quick: 1) thorough cleaning of the teeth and gums; 2) in-office whitening; 3) sculpting (reshaping) irregularly-shaped teeth; and 4) simple cosmetic bonding to initially fix glaring chips or gaps. We have all the specialists in our office, including: cosmetic dentists, orthodontists, periodontists (gum), endodontists (root canal) and oral surgeons, so any desired work can be completed quickly and comfortably. Our website, NYCdentist.com, contains over 4,400 pages of dentistry performed in our office.

STAY YOUNG WITH FITNESS The BrowningMETHOD with Mary Ann Browning

THE CENTER FOR SPECIAL DENTISTRY 425 Madison Avenue, Suite 500 New York, NY 10017 T: 212.758.1000 W: NYCdentist.com

Age has a way of defying us all, no matter how much we try to fend it off. But Mary Ann Browning says there are ways of keeping yourself looking and feeling younger despite nature.“We know, in the BrowningMETHOD, the importance of maintaining muscle as you age,” she says. “Lifting weights is so important in keeping your muscles and joints strong. Two other key factors which we stress at Browning Fitness, no matter what age you are, are perfect posture and strong abdominals. Nothing ages you more than standing with rounded shoulders like you are carrying the weight of the world, along with the dreaded increase in fat around your midsection year after year. The key is to start young. Stand tall and contract the abdominal wall, not only for the obvious reason that this will help you develop a better body shape overall, but because it will keep you looking and feeling more youthful and vibrant.”

Cyber Fraud and Security Tips Hillview Capital Advisors

C

yber security has become an increasingly pervasive concern today, particularly for those with significant wealth. Most would agree that technology has improved our lives–from instantly sharing pictures with family and friends while vacationing to online trading from your mobile device. However, this increased efficiency does not come without a price. As technology has become more sophisticated, so have the methods criminals use to perpetrate their crimes. Protection against fraud requires vigilant efforts by everyone involved, including your advisors. AVENUE talks to David Spungen and Jonathan Hochberg of Hillview Capital Advisors, a New York-based wealth management firm, about some of the ways they work to protect their clients and educate them on cyber fraud.

Hillview has been around for 15 years; tell us what you’ve seen in recent cyber fraud activity? Cyber criminals are evolving just as rapidly as technology, developing new ways to separate people from their assets. While the most common tactics used to compromise a victim’s identity or personal information are still malware, phishing, and social engineering (i.e. using social media and other electronic media to gain the trust of victims over time, manipulating them into divulging confidential information), they are growing increasingly difficult to identify. Once they gain access to your personal information, criminals can commit various types of cybercrime, including electronic funds transfer (EFT) fraud (via prepaid bank cards), fraudulent trading, wire fraud, and establishing fraudulent accounts. What procedures do you have in place to protect your clients’ sensitive information? We’ve learned that most cyber fraud starts with someone gaining access to nonpublic, personal information (i.e account numbers, passwords, social security numbers, etc.). A name and address combined with one or more pieces of more sensitive data goes a very long way for criminals. We maintain physical, electronic, and procedural safeguards to protect clients’ nonpublic, personal information. A few basic examples include: Storing information in lockable filing cabinets, never leaving it unattended, and disposing of it by shredding, ■ Communicating sensitive information in a password-protected document attached to an email message, or in an encrypted email. ■ Requiring employee mobile devices to be password protected and reporting any loss immediately (our Director of Technology has the ability to remotely wipe all company-related information from the device), and most importantly, *Requiring verbal client confirmation for the transfer or disbursement of funds. ■

As advisors, we have a duty to safeguard our clients’ information. Employees are educated about our privacy policy when they join our firm, and are required to participate in annual training sessions. Furthermore, we have designed an Identity Theft Prevention Policy (“ITPP”) to help identify, prevent and detect identity theft. What steps do you recommend to your clients for protecting themselves and their families from cyber fraud attempts? The first step in helping our clients is to get everyone (access persons and family members) on the same page. No matter the hardware/software, policies or procedures we put in place, if our clients aren’t engaged in addressing the issue, they can be left vulnerable. This becomes even more important when dealing with multiple generations of a family, since each has their preferred style of communication. Among the many ways we encourage clients to protect themselves and their information is to follow recommended best practices regarding password resets, communication protocol, and general safe use of social media platforms. Industry experts have worked to design procedures to help avoid security breaches–the best thing to do is to take their advice and put it to good use. Lastly, if our clients are victims of cyber fraud or an attempted cybercrime we encourage them to notify us immediately (and law enforcement, if applicable) so that we may increase our diligence and be on high alert for suspicious activities (communications, trading, etc.). ✦ HILLVIEW CAPITAL ADVISORS 777 Third Avenue, 28th Floor New York, NY 10017 212.661.9750

Townhouse in the Sky The Marquand Penthouse Designed by Lee Mindel at 11 E 68 Street

What makes the triplex penthouse at 11 East 68th Street so special? It is a triplex penthouse, a “townhouse in the sky,” with high ceilings and large floor plates . . . it has substantial outdoor terraces and large expanses of space, with views of the Park and the city. And it has three great qualities: location location location! Is there anything that is unique or specific to the penthouse project? It is a fantasy three-story townhouse/loft in the sky, both vertical and horizontal, with two levels of outdoor space set amidst the city we love, and adjacent to the best outdoor room in the world, Central Park. What are the challenges working with a landmark property? To find the historic voice of the building and be informed by the past but not be a slave to it. . . and to understand the sociological changes that have occurred and reflect those in the architectural response. Were you thinking about a particular person when you designed it? We were thinking of Mr. Marquand himself . . . and [wondering], if he were here today, what would be [a design] respectful of his civic historic and curatorial legacy?. . . He was an early benefactor of the Metropolitan Museum of Art . . . and a connoisseur of culture, art, architecture and history. It is apparent that Scandinavian and Norwegian design is a major influence in your work; is this something that can be seen at the new penthouse space? The Scandinavians, through Finland’s Alvar Aalto and the Saarinens

(father and son,); Sweden’s classicist Gunnar Asplund; and Denmark’s obsession with quality as seen in the work of Arne Jacobsen, Vilhelm Lauritzen and Kaj Gottlieb: They have all have made use of the elements of modernism but never lost the sense of humanity in architecture. It is their rigor and simplicity that inform our work, as well as the seamlessly integrated environment. The Marquand is a New York City landmark; how did you tackle incorporating design elements from its past into the future? The detail was everywhere . . . from the limestone facade to an exciting wood-paneled door . . . The consistent use of detail created a great sense of refinement and luxury. Each design decision was informed by this attention to detail. How did you get involved in overseeing the restoration and interior design of 11 E 68th Street? Our developer, HFZ Capital Group, under the leadership of Ziel Feldman and Nir Meir, brought on Douglas Elliman’s sales and marketing team headed by Susan DeFranca. Karen Mansour, Madeline Hult Elghanayan and Sabrina Saltiel were on the team from the beginning and met with us weekly for almost two years. What is your state of mind when designing a new space? Particularly in reference to the outdoor space at the triplex penthouse? Celebrate a space’s context and realize its potential. ✦

Defining Luxury Real Estate Tips from Jennifer Roberts and Randi Fisher of J/R Luxe

J

ennifer Roberts (pictured, right) and Randi Fisher of J/R Luxe, a newly-launched luxury residential real estate team with Coldwell Banker Previews International, told us about their work with international buyers, their strangest real estate requests and the philosophy behind their new venture. Tell us about a shining moment in your professional career. JENNIFER: Truthfully, we have sold hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of luxury real estate throughout Manhattan in our careers but launching our team is the most exciting. No one can hold a candle to Coldwell Banker Previews in terms of international reach; they are the undisputed kings. We can now provide our clients with inimitable services only viable because of this global reach.

RANDI: And we get to focus exclusively and unapologetically on what we know best: Manhattan’s premier and trophy addresses, representing buyers and sellers who demand only five-star service. What’s the most unusual request you’ve had to accommodate in order to make the sale? JENNIFER: It was at a beautiful prewar apartment at 1230 Park Avenue

We’ve navigated it all, and not just in real estate. that had these gorgeous antique crystal knobs. However, before the sale closed, all the knobs mysteriously disappeared and the buyer insisted they be recovered. I ended up scouring antique shops until I found the exact make and model and enough to go around—not an easy task. RANDI: It was at this incredible loft in Tribeca. The owner happened to be the son of a close friend, a bachelor, and he was a bit messy, to say the least. I had to have to whole place fumigated. I was even asked to clean toilets. What’s your favorite way to spend a day in your neighborhood? JENNIFER: I have lived in Carnegie Hill with my husband for 30 years. It’s not only fun to drop into a museum for an exhibit on the way to work, but it’s given me the privilege to know the neighborhood and its history. When I first started out in real estate over 20 years ago, I primarily sold on the Upper East Side. Through forming relationships and bringing global clientele to the local Manhattan market, I’ve become a specialist in every area of the city from the Financial District to Harlem. RANDI: I am a long-time Upper East Side resident, but my two children now live downtown—in Tribeca and the West Village. When I began my real estate career, everything seemed to be focused on the Upper East

Side, but clients gradually began moving downtown—ironically the areas where my children live! It’s great to have an excuse to drop by and say hello to them. What distinguishes you from others in your field? What expertise/ experience do you bring to the table? JENNIFER: We’ve navigated it all, and not just in real estate. I have an MBA in marketing and finance and worked in the business world for some major corporations, including American Express and Bloomingdales, before finding a niche in real estate. We’ve seen the ups and downs in the market and know how to get our clients through it, whatever the circumstances may be. RANDI: Now that we’re Previews Specialists at a franchise of Coldwell Banker Previews International—the luxury division of Coldwell Banker with offices in 52 countries—we have the global force of Previews at our disposal, which enables us to provide our clients with innumerable resources from around the world. ✦

OUI OUI, GIVERNY Couturier B Michael shares his inspiration

Inspiration found

One of my favorite places in the world to travel for inspiration is the village of Giverny, Vernon Town, located at the gateway to Normandy, about 50 miles from Paris. During a recent trip to France with my partner MarkAnthony, we spent a day in Giverny. As soon as we hit the road from Paris, I started to decompress. Being in Giverny is like walking around in an Impressionist painting. Inside a Monet. Our first stop was a visit to Claude Monet’s garden. The inspiration I felt was emotional; I knew the palette for my next collection would come from the garden. Several of the photos I took in the garden became the actual prints on the silk gabardine used in the collection. Once inside Claude Monet’s chateau, I was even more amazed by the view of the garden from the window of the studio where the artist worked.

AN ALUMNUS OF Oscar de la Renta and Louis Feraud, B Michael launched his first solo couture collection in 1999. He has been designing ever since and counts as clients fashion greats like Beyoncé Knowles and Amy Fine Collins. When B Michael is not busy with his CFDA duties, teaching at FIT or volunteering his time on the boards of charities like DreamYard Project, he and his partner Mark-Anthony Edwards are avid travelers. Here, learn how the French village of Giverny left a lasting impression on the designer.

Sensory experience

Giverny appeals to all the senses. We had a six-course lunch with great wines in a local restaurant, Le Jardin des Plumes, which for us is now a destination. Imagine: The exterior is a wellmaintained, century-old farm-Tudor . . . we walked through a wooden gate and over a stone path with overgrown greenery to enter an interior that is sleek and understated elegance, all in soft white with contrasting sterling; a complete surprise and a splendid way to mix old and new. We ate inside in a little alcove that overlooked the gorgeous garden, which was lush and green from the rain. There is also the Giverny Museum of Impressionisms. The exhibitions include Impressionist artists from all over the world.

And finally . . . Pure tranquility

No trip is complete without shopping. After wandering in and out of the shops along the road, we found coffee cups painted with Impressionist images; so, yes, we became tourists and bought them! ✦

It is estimated that 500,000 people visit Giverny a year . . . yet there is no sense of crowds and the pace is very slow. For me, it is a place to stop the world and get off for a day, to visit another time and way of life. I know several friends who have visited Giverny, and we all agree it’s the kind of thing you want to do under the radar. If you were to run into someone, it would almost seem invasive. That said, I want everyone to go at least once.

WHAT’S DOING THIS FALL BLUE HAVEN

There is nothing like a private party in someone’s home to make you feel welcome and wanted. That’s not to say a tent pitched on the lawn for a good cause isn’t fun, but it’s usually not cozy and almost always involves a lot of people you don’t know and may not want to know. So it was refreshing when jeweler and interior designer Lisa Jackson, long one of the Hamptons’ most stylish hostesses, threw open the doors to her far-flung estate Blue Haven, in Southampton. “I like styling the house and doing my own flowers before a party; I love it when people are laughing and just enjoying life. Carpe diem,” Lisa mused. And, indeed, guests did enjoy themselves as they mingled, gossiped, dined and danced at what is one of the chic-est minimalist houses on the East Coast. That’s “minimalist” on the inside, where everything is spare and modern and done in shades of white and gray. Outside, Lisa’s home is one of the grandest examples of a classic shingled mansion on the East End. There is a spacious wraparound porch and a blue-tiled roof that has made the house a landmark since it was Scott Diament and Matilda built in the 1800s. The house is set amidst 150 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • SEPTEMBER 2014

perfectly manicured grounds dotted with stately shade trees. Among the guests perching on luxurious seating areas throughout the house was Lisa’s best friend Vera Wang, of whom she said, “Twenty-seven years ago we got trapped in New York City going to eight bridal showers together, and we were forever bonded from that experience.” Others in the glamorous mix were Dana Hammond and Patrick Stubgen MD, Janna Bullock, Alix and Philip Toub, Elizabeth Lindemann,, Todd Meister and Carol Mack. The house’s flow is effortless, and everywhere you turned you would find friends glowing in the candlelight; they included Tiffany Dubin, Perri Peltz, Zucker, Jennifer Creel, Kelly Rutherford, Lisa’s Caryn Zucker husband Donald Jackson and others of that ilk and stripe. Lisa, who’s designed homes for Tory Burch, Michael J. Fox, Renée Zellweger and Wang, has a deft hand and uses her subtle design palette to let her company sparkle, not just the gilt on the Louis XIV chairs, n’est-ce pas? On the professional front, Lisa will open LJ Cross in October on Madison Avenue at 77th Street to showcase her collection of diamond-studded crosses, rings, necklaces and earrings that are also available at JANGEORGe in East Hampton. NEW YORK ART, ANTIQUE AND JEWELRY SHOW DEBUTS

Ralph Destino Jr., forever known as the Cartier Kid because his father Ralph Destino Sr. is the chairman emeritus of Cartier, has what is arguably the best view in the Hamptons. His house, Pine Hill, is nestled on the top of a knoll in Water Mill, with sweeping vistas out to bucolic farm and polo fields and on to the Atlantic Ocean. Ralph, Campion Platt and the Palm Beach Show Group’s Scott Diament hosted a cocktail around the property’s infinity pool to kick off the New York Art, Antique & Jewelry Show, which will open at the Park Avenue Armory on September 17. This is the city’s longest and oldest running show and will feature catering by Le Cirque. The opening night committee includes interior designers Scott Snyder, Ellie Cullman and Tony Ingrao and Randy Kemper. The evening will toast the New York School of Interior Design. On view through September 21 will be a billion dollars worth of fine art, antiques, jewelry, photography, rare books, manuscripts and tapestries from over 80 top international dealers, including M.S. Rau Antiques, Macklowe Gallery, FitzGerald Fine Arts, Butchoff Antiques, Imperial Oriental Art and the Lotus Gallery. (nyfallshow.com)

CHARLES JAMES, BENEATH THE DRESS

The National Arts Club and its Office of Fine Arts, under the direction of Dianne Bernhard, will showcase a trio of art exhibits featuring Edvard Munch, Ilya Kabakov and Charles James. Continuing the conversation started by this year’s Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute show, the NAC will present Charles James: Beneath the Dress. Patricia Hearst Shaw, whose aunt, Mrs. William Randolph Hearst, was one of James’ top clients, will host the opening on September 29. Joining in on the hosting duties will be Patricia’s daughter Gillian Hearst Simonds, Kimberly Rockefeller and Cornelia Guest. Guest, notably, was the last style-maker to wear a James creation covered in live orchids, recreating the night when the aforementioned Austine “Bootsie” Hearst wore the original jacket at a March of Dimes fashion show. The exhibit will include 60 controversial erotic and fashion drawings by James that have never been viewed before in public. Roberta Smith, art critic for the New York Times, in a review titled “Where Elegance Meets Eros,” wrote of the Met’s show Charles James: Beyond Fashion, “Most impressive are a score of drawings executed in an emphatic synthesis of early modernist styles, from Constructivism to Surrealism . . . one more detail confirming James’ ceaseless artistry.” Bill Cunningham, who calls James “the Einstein of Fashion,” has spoken highly of the 20-hour documentary made by Anton Perich that is the foundation of a new short film by Angela Bernhard Thomas that will be screened. Excerpts from the documentary, which is currently playing on TV, will also be shown. Cunningham says, “It’s the only important film about Charlie.” Perich will also hang photographs of the legendary couturier fitting clothes on his last clients, the jeweler Elsa Peretti and the sculptor Elizabeth lizabeth Strong-Cuevas. W

aris Ahluwalia is one of those fellows you see at almost every significant New York social event. Easily recognized by his immaculately tailored suit and his Dastar turban, Ahluwalia is also an eccentric fixture in Wes Anderson’s motion pictures. There’s substance beneath the surface, too. He’s established a fine jewelry brand, House of Waris, by sourcing diamonds, precious metals and craftsmanship from Rajasthan to Rome. His travels are far and wide, and as an adopted New Yorker, Ahluwalia shares some tips on being a Manhattan flâneur.

WHAT IS YOUR PRESENT STATE OF MIND? I think I left it in Europe, somewhere between Paris and Istanbul. WHAT ARE YOU UP TO AT THE MOMENT? Filming in Toronto and pretending I can do it all.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE NEW YORK SOUND? The sound of birds chirping at dawn when you’ve accidentally stayed up way past your bedtime.

WHERE DO YOU GO TO BE INSPIRED IN NEW YORK? You don’t have to go far to be inspired. I just walk the streets under the cover of darkness when it’s just me and the ghosts. It’s electric.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE WATERING HOLE FOR LUNCH? FOR DINNER? St. Ambroeus on Perry, Cafe Cluny, Indochine, Fat Radish, Minetta Tavern—I could never pick one.

IF YOUR APARTMENT WERE ON FIRE, WHAT WOULD YOU RESCUE? My pet tiger, for sure. WHERE IS PARADISE FOR YOU? Other than a white sand beach, I have discovered a new paradise. That place is high up in the mountains, in the Himalayas: the region of Darjeeling. Waking up at sunrise, watching the first light of morning hit the peak of Kanchenjunga, the lakes of mist underneath, the morning hymns across the valley: I’ve never felt closer to the heavens.

WHAT ITEM CAN’T YOU LIVE WITHOUT? A fountain pen. IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT NEW YORK, WHAT WOULD IT BE? I wish we had more of a life around the Hudson or East rivers. Like in Rome or Paris.

WHOM DO YOU MOST ADMIRE? My mother and my late father. WHO’S YOUR HERO? Atticus Finch. WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN? To stay true to your heart and what you believe in. Sounds simple but it’s one of the most challenging things to do. “Things which matter most must never be at the

IS THERE A PROJECT THAT STICKS OUT IN YOUR MIND AS MOST MEMORABLE AND WHY? Our most recent project, called RARE. What a privilege to commission and work with artisans from around the world and house them in our little shop at the Gritti Palace in Venice. To support craftsmanship is to celebrate humanity.

WHICH NEW YORK STORES DO YOU RELY ON? Lifethyme health food market, almost daily, Three Lives & Company for stories; Atelier Courbet for discovery; Doyle Mueser for all my suits.

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GROW UP? A cowboy, of course. ✦
