Our cover star, June Ambrose—who is behind the head-to-toe look of stars like Jay-Z and Kanye West and helped turn hip hop into mainstream music—is the perfect example of a true New York success story. Born in Antigua, Ambrose grew up in the Bronx, but with her hustle, charm, talent and knack for superstar style, she is now one of the most important figures in entertainment; the go-to-gal when musicians need the style and savvy to get media attention in an ever-competitive world. Also, Ambrose was one of the first people to marry high-end fashion brands with rap music. Can you imagine Kanye West in anything but Louis Vuitton or Gucci? Ambrose’s infectious personality and ferociously on-target fashion radar has landed her a show on VH1 and appearances on Simon Cowell’s much-anticipated show The X-Factor (which has recently popped across the pond from England). With her career racing at full speed, Ambrose may have been bred in the Bronx, but she was born to be an A-Lister.

THE BEST THING about New York is Editor Peter Davis that it holds true to Frank Sinatra’s cliché that “If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere.” The days when old money names like Astor, Vanderbilt and Rockefeller ruled the roosts on Park Avenue are long gone. The aristocracy in the city is a meritocracy where one’s worth is not based on inherited fortunes and grand houses, but rather on accomplishment. So when we compiled our annual A-List, we weren’t thinking of Mrs. Astor’s famous 400 list of socially prominent, invite-worthy people, but rather of who changed the cityscape—whether in fashion, media, finance, real estate, art or entertainment. You name it, this town is filled with fascinating characters who are game changers that keep us on our toes.

Our A-List runs the gamut of names from sister acts like Lady Gaga and Natali Germanotta—who are launching a fashion label that will surely sell out in seconds—to Gayle King, who is much more than just Oprah’s BFF. Then there is Jill Abramson, the first woman in history to hold the Executive Editor title at The New York Times and Rupert Murdoch, who dominated the scandal sheets that he helped become a phenomenon with the phone-hacking fiasco but still maintins his net worth of $7.6 billion. Murdoch is definitely a “to be continued…” saga that keeps us logging on to the web for the latest updates.

In the world of finance, there are a bunch of new names on the block—from young upstarts Naveen Selvadurai and Dennis Crowley, who turned the phone app Foursquare (where you check into various locales for points) into a $600 million dollar business, to Kevin P. Ryan who has made Gilt Groupe the blueprint for how to shop online for all things stylish.

Politically speaking, we are gearing up for the mayoral race, so check out the likely list of candidates and start deciding for whom you’re going to vote. Manhattan Media’s Tom Allon is in the race, so of course my vote is already cast. And looking ahead, it seems almost a done deal that Governor Andrew Cuomo is going to run in (and most likely win) the 2016 presidential election. Stay tuned.

Of course we injected our list with a dose of glamour in the form of the four Clarins girls—or as we call them, “The Clarins Quartet.” The granddaughters of the founder of the famous skin-care company are causing a youthquake in Manhattan.

Harry Benson: I’m looking forward to the November launch of Hilary Geary Ross’ and my new book, New York New York with photographs of some very interesting New Yorkers from the 60s to today with an introduction by Jay McInerney. I’m also looking forward to watching the N.Y. Rangers win some games this season, with my young dachshund, Tillie, and my not-so-young pug Daisy, while my wife Gigi watches Grey’s Anatomy in the other room.

Gigi Mortimer: I cant wait to start harvesting the pumpkins in my garden, making pumpkin ginger spice cake with maple syrup icing for my Dad’s birthday, enjoying an Indian summer weekend, mountain biking with my dogs when the sky is blue and the autumn leaves are at their peak. an I tell you a secret? I was over summer before invitations for Labor Day parties ever landed in my inbox.

Somewhere between the season’s bi-polar weather, earthquake tremors, and Tropical Storm Irene, I was ready to go from a hot child in the city to a cool kid in Brunello Cucinelli cashmere.

Relief arrives in the form of Andrew Saffir’s Cinema Society party for Our Idiot Brother, which is screened on the roof of the MiMA 1. There, Courtney Love has stayed just as long as I have, taking in the cool breeze, although she had come much later. In fact, she tells me her late arrival made her miss the man of the hour, Paul Rudd, who convincingly plays the loving, slow-minded sibling in the comedy alongside Emily Mortimer, Elizabeth Banks and Zooey Deschanel. “We were in 200 Cigarettes together, but you’re too young to remember,” Love says with a big smile, as we make our way to the elevator together.

By the time the following Friday rolls around, the American Red Cross fundraiser with Sharon Bush and Jay McInerney and a screening of Tanner Hall hosted by Diane von Furstenberg and Barry Diller, both in Southampton, are cancelled due to “a possibility of evacuation.” The only party that remains is a private reception for the Crown Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil at Sir Ivan Wilzig’s infamously over-the-top “castle.”

Back in a post-Irene city on Monday, things are nearly back to normal. A dinner in honor of Charlotte Ronson’s Sephora beauty line at the Hotel Chantelle brings out a slew of lovely ladies, none of whom look worse for the wear, although the opened roof is causing a few worried glances. Across from me, Olivia Palermo Faran Krentcil sits with doll-like DJ Becka Diamond who wears something bondage-y. Later, Harley Viera-Newton controls the turntables. I wonder where Charlotte’s twin sister, Samantha Ronson is, but Irene had struck once again: the DJ apparently has been grounded in Los Angeles due to flight problems left-over from the weekend. Irene is truly a party pooper.

During dinner, Sarah Kunst texts from the U.S. Open to tell me she is seated near none other than Jack Donaghy, er, I mean Alec Baldwin, and his new lady love, 27-year-old yoga instructor Hilaria Thomas. Sarah is an exotic beauty who everyone thinks looks like Tika Sumpter (including Tika), but in reality, she just has a Paul Rudd and way with social media (and men). The party’s coming to an end and I scurry out in time—just before the Kardashian clan and the rest of the anonymous guests—and hail a cab.

It’s still a bit too uncomfortably warm, and a tad sticky, but I can already feel a twinge of fall in the air. Or . . . is that a raindrop? F

She’d never be the same beauty she once was! Realizing her fate, Jenny hanged herself in her California home in 1941.

Come to think of it, Rosie wasn’t in nearly as much trouble as her sister. But, lonely that her confidante had passed, Rosie also attempted suicide but was unsuccessful. Poor Rosie—she died of natural causes in 1970. F

t isn’t always the best thing to be a lady of great wealth. The Dolly twins were quite a rarity, having made their money through their Vaudeville fame and luck with gambling, the sisters were well-endowed to say the least. Unfortunately for them, it wasn’t meant to be. Jenny Dolly just couldn’t make a logical decision when it came to her money; she decided to evade luxury taxes on her $185,000, 51-carat diamond that she bought in Cannes, the first of many missteps. Dolly was then fined $756,744 and sentenced to three days in jail. Oh, dear Jenny—they all knew your dead secretary didn’t do it! She should’ve stopped saying that long before the 1934 ruling the French government made against her.

Jenny and Rosie Dolly came to America with their immigrant parents when they were just 12 years old. The sisters quickly made it to the stage, working their way up to performing and starring in Ziegfeld Follies. By that time, the girls were making mistake after glorious mistake—divorcing millionaires and buying and selling jewels to pay their debts.

They sealed their fate in 1930 when Jenny won more than a quarter of a million dollars at baccarat in Le Touquet.

Soon after the win Jenny was in a terrible car accident that destroyed her good looks—these ladies just weren’t meant to have money. She needed 15 operations to try to fix the damage but was never restored to her former beauty. How did she pay? Jenny auctioned off her jewels,

The First Couple of Street Style Scott Schuman and Garance Doré are in love with fashion—and each other

W

hen Garance Doré started her blog in Marseille, France five years ago, she was reluctant to tell anyone about it.

Blogs weren’t cool; they were for the nerdy-types who stayed at home every Saturday chronicling their less-thaninteresting lives on the web. Little did she know, her namesake blog was to become anything but boring and nerdy.

An illustrator originally from Corsica (whose childhood dream was to draw for Disney), Doré launched her site hoping to garner attention for Garance Doré and her artwork and to train Scott Schuman herself to meet deadlines.

Soon enough, she started writing about her inspirations and later, adding photos of the stylish people in her surroundings. While she slowly but surely built up her reputation as the style reporter in Paris, all while writing to readers in her consistently charming voice, Scott Schuman’s blog was well on its way to becoming what some now deem a must-read for anyone in the fashion industry.

Like Doré, Schuman fell into blogging almost accidentally when he found himself a stay at home dad in need of a hobby.

Raised in Indianapolis, he built up his fashion credibility first

by working for a men’s clothing retailer, and later when he moved to New York to work in marketing for brands like Helmut Lang and Jean Paul Gaultier. He eventually became the director of men’s fashion at Bergdorf Goodman and opened his own showroom to help market up-and-coming designers.

After 9/11, Scott closed his showroom and searched for another outlet for his creative aspirations.

The blogosphere was growing, and recognizing it was the fastest way to communicate to an audience, Schuman launched The Sartorialist to highlight his definition of style as more than looking trendy—instead, he looks for the subtle details in his subject’s allure that draw attention. Calling on his readers to submit vintage photographs, he insists on the notion of style as timeless, detached from labels and fleeting trends.

Together, Doré and Schuman present fashion to the public in an innovative way—not only by looking beyond models, but by creating a platform where readers can exchange their own points of view and opinions. Each of Schuman’s posts average about 80-100 comments, while Doré has garnered up to 200 responses.

professing their artistic admiration for one another. When Schuman bought Doré a Canon 5D digital camera—the same one he uses and the one she still uses to this day—the two became inseparable. Soon after, Doré moved from Paris to Greenwich Village to live with Schuman.

Chronicling street style is nothing new; Bill Cunningham has been at it for years, and before him the Seeberger Brothers gave birth to authentic fashion photography in the early 1900s. But unlike Cunningham’s shy persona, Schuman and Doré’s union has turned them into somewhat of a celebrity power couple in the fashion world. Doré has confessed to having stood outside the tents of Fashion Week waiting patiently for a glimpse of the stylish set, but nowadays, both she and Schuman sit front row at most of the shows. They also spend their time jetting from places such as Paris, Milan and Tokyo—giving the rest of us a glimpse of style from all four corners of the world.

More than just her eye catching visuals, Doré’s genuine and relatable personality keeps readers coming back to hear more.

While magazine editorials depict the industry’s ideals, Doré seems to humanize the fashion world. Recent posts touch on everything from her weight loss crisis to her distaste for the symbolism of Louboutin’s red soles, which she believes has overshadowed the appreciation of his craft. Frequently asking her readers to weigh in on decisions (like whether she should get the Miu Miu glitter pumps in black or gold), her approach to style is an honest one that any style-curious reader can relate to.

Although Doré has more of an intimate relationship with her readers, her would-be competitor is all business when it comes to blogging. Schuman’s posts are rarely accompanied by text and never refer to what brands his subjects are wearing, or even who most of his subjects are. He once posted a photo of Adrian Grenier riding a bike in Paris with a friend and titled the post “Isabel and Friend.” Ranging from elderly Italian churchgoers to the pretty young things of downtown Manhattan, Schuman’s pictures highlight the people and their appeal more than the clothes on their back, almost as though style were a state of mind.

In a world where editors and fashion magazines dictate trends, Schuman and Doré have changed the game. Editors log into their sites to get a taste of what is happening outside the photo studio and in the streets. Showing just how much the couple has influenced the fashion world, in August, Vogue

UK published a fashion editorial entitled “Style Hunter” in which models were made to look like the subjects in Doré and Schuman’s blog—posing as if they were texting or simply on their way to work. Even the framing of the photographs by Raymond Meier stunk of Sartorialism, with shots of details on shoes and handbags à la Schuman. The New York Times also jumped on the street-style bandwagon with a section online offering aspiring Sartorialists the chance to submit their own photos.

The two have turned a number of otherwise anonyomous editors into web celebrities—Eva Fontanelli from Italian Elle, Giovanna Battaglia from W, for example—and fans seek them out so ferociously that Doré posted a list of pointers for those hoping to land a spot on one of their sites.

Among her tips: wear anything bizarre and have the right attitude without looking desperate.

More than just style hunters, Doré and Schuman are also recognized for their photography skills. And while photographers used to rely on magazines for exposure, these two have garnered attention independently from print publications.

These days, both are regularly commissioned to photograph for Style.com, Vogue, and marketing campaigns such as Schuman’s recent “Art of the Trench” series for Burberry.

Although their sites seem to put readers and consumers in the same boat, both Doré and Schuman are very careful when it comes to maintaining their integrity. The advertising on their sites is carefully manicured, and Doré goes to great pains to assure her readers that nothing she posts has a commercial interest.

If she mentions any brands, she’ll specify why she chose to feature the product and exactly what draws her to it.

That being said, in 2007 Doré posted a simple photo of a sweater, and later learned from the retailer that the sweaters’ sales had exploded within weeks of her post.

In a matter of years, these two bloggers/photographers have gained a reputation as indispensable style chroniclers.

In fact, Schuman’s photos are on display in a couple museums throughout the world. Their romantic merger has only intensified the fascination with this couple, brought together by their envious eye for style. Although they both work independently, their paths inevitably collide at times. It seems the fashion world is waiting to see them collaborate on a project for a double dose of style.

ollowing quietly behind style diva extraordinaire June Ambrose, carrying a garment bag twice the size of her torso, is Ambrose’s 7-year-old daughter Summer, who has become somewhat of a fashion intern over her summer break from school. With a thick mane of curls and striped designer dress, Ambrose’s pint-sized mini-me exudes the same confidence as her mother, exhibiting a personality that seems all too big for her tiny frame. “Because they’ve grown up in the business,” Ambrose, donning her signature oversized, thick black-framed glasses and a floppy hat, explains of Summer and her 10-year-old brother Chance. “They understand why people respond to celebrities in the way that they do. They’re learning that it’s a privilege to be a part of an elite group of people.”

And when your mother counts superstars like Jay-Z and Beyoncé as friends, one is bound to experience an a-typical childhood. “Two weeks ago we were hanging out with one of the Beatles,” Ambrose laughs. “They were talking to Paul McCartney and Jay [-Z] backstage at a Beyoncé concert and Paul was showing Chance how to play the harmonica.” Again, that is certainly not your average childhood, and miles away from the one experienced by Ambrose herself. The self-professed Holly Golightly of the hip-hop world, Ambrose’s rise to the top of the New York fashion scene has been anything but ordinary.

Born on the Caribbean Island of Antigua, and raised in the Bronx, Ambrose credits her mother’s determination and fearlessness as the backbone of her ever-expanding multi-media empire. A former investment banker, and one time MCA Records (now Geffen) intern, Ambrose has come a long way, but at no surprise to the style guru herself.

“I always wanted to walk into a room and be the focus of it, that was just my shtick.

I was going to use myself to get my foot in the door and make things happen.” And make things happen she did—as evident in her 21 years of working in the industry. Ambrose has quickly become synonymous with urban glamour and fashion, fashion, fashion. It’s no wonder designers, recording artists and actors alike all flock to Ambrose and her team at Mode Squad for a head-to-toe makeover like no other. “June has a sense of extravagance that brings a unique perspective to real clothes,” says designer and client Catherine Malandrino.

The philosophy behind Ambrose’s business stems from all of the elements of her history.

From her brief childhood in Antigua, watching her mother craft “carnival queen dresses,” to her days commuting from the Bronx to her performing arts school, Talent Unlimited High School—every step was one in the direction of success. While minoring in musical theater in high school, Ambrose was often creating costumes for the numerous productions that went on each year. From there, her interest in the craft peaked and she found herself buried in books about the art of costume design, reading about costumers such as Edith Head.

“There weren’t any classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology. There were no mentors helping me through. I used costume designers as my reference, and they were all costume designers—they weren’t considered stylists.”

Never one for regrets, Ambrose nonetheless found herself drowning in the dullness of investment banking. After accumulating a strong savings account and financial portfolio, Ambrose left the security and insurance of her position and sought out an internship (yes, unpaid) at MCA Records. It was there where Ambrose got her first break when a manager

from another record company came in looking for someone to help style a new act he was pitching. Jumping at the opportunity, Ambrose found herself at a point where she could combine her love of fashion and her connections in the music industry with the skills and knowledge she had acquired during her brief stint as a marketing major in college.

One day, while picking out outfits for the then-relatively unknown girl group TLC, Ambrose found herself in conversation with the owner of urban retailer Cross Colours; one which, at the time before Fubu and Rocawear, was the leading name in urban street wear. “‘You’ve got to be careful with this stuff,’ I told him, ‘because you’re going to over-saturate the brand,’” she recounts with a nostalgic smile on her face. “He seemed interested and wanted to know what else I had to say and before I knew it he was offering me a job.” At a time when she was working freelance and making just enough money to sustain herself while living with her mother, Ambrose negotiated a contract and became one of the youngest marketing managers in the business. “I was a maverick at the time, in terms of crossing over urban brands.” Then, stations like MTV and VH1 were lacking in diversity, with a white wash of boy bands and very little “urban music.” Along with peers like Sean “P.Diddy” Combs and Hype Williams, Ambrose had a vision of bringing glamour and luxury to the urban environment and was determined to change the way it fit into the world of pop culture. “I wanted to take urban style and make it something cinematic and forward—a kind of high market approach.” Taking the grittiness and edge that was synonymous with acts of the time, Ambrose began calling on high-end designers like Todd Oldham and Giorgio Armani to be a part of the process. Though most designers were hesitant to market their clothes in such an environment, Ambrose stopped at nothing to execute her vision. “I brought in all of these elements and designed all of these pieces for this scene when nobody wanted to give Mariah Carey gowns.”

Suddenly, record companies were flocking to Ambrose when they wanted their artists tweaked or fixed. “I remember they brought me Macy Gray and all I could think was ‘what are we going to do with her?’ I thought I was being punked.” Artists like Dave Matthews Band and the Backstreet Boys caught on to the success of her artists and suddenly she was the go-to-girl for the full marketing makeover. Urban music was now qualified as “pop music” and had a much stronger presence on major networks—all with the help of a pint-sized gal with a mission.

Cut to 2011 and Ambrose, who’s approaching her 40th birthday, is at the top of her game.

After 17 years, Mode Squad now handles artists like Jay-Z and Kanye West, both now style icons in their own right, and Ambrose has branched out by working with designers and advertising companies on branding and marketing plans. And since the web is filled with opportunities for personal branding, Ambrose has used it wisely to create a fan base like never before. With nearly 300,000 followers on Twitter (rivaling the numbers of some Hollywood celebrities), Ambrose gives admirers an inside peek into her glamorous life.

From her nicknames for each day of the week—think Maverick Monday and Save Me Sunday—and daily “twit pics” detailing her outfit and beauty choices, Ambrose is as connected as they come. Add to that her hilarious series of YouTube videos showing the style queen “fainting in Louis Vuitton” or “writhing in Chanel,” and Ambrose provides a fashion fantasy and comedy routine all wrapped up into one. With the buzz around her continuing to grow, VH1 finally took notice—offering the style star a formatted reality-based show that will take viewers inside the process of a Mode makeover.

someone I really admire. She’s talented, and for a designer to come to you and say ‘I love your aesthetic and your approach to style and how it relates to my consumer,’ is just so flattering.” The show is still being filmed, and camera crews are following her around from gig to gig. Expected to air in the spring of 2012, it’s sure to give fellow guru and Hollywood stylist Rachel Zoe a run for her notoriety.

The multi-tasking maverick will certainly have her hands full this fall as she also uproots her family to Los Angeles to be a part of Simon Cowell’s latest venture: the highly anticipated, American version of the British talent show hit, The X-Factor.

Although she has kept rather mum on the details of her involvement, Ambrose tells AVENUE that she will appear as a weekly guest on the show, guiding the performers as they discover their personal style and identity as an artist. Jet-setting back and forth between L.A. and New York will certainly pose a challenge, but in Ambrose’s world, it’s just another day on the job. Frey has recently re-established himself as a literary lion with the best-selling, young adult novel, I Am Number Four, which was written in a collaborative effort with Jobie Hughes and published under the pseudonym Pittacus Lore. I Am Number Four, the first in a series, was picked up and made into a film that grossed more than $144 million. The sequel, The Power of Six, quickly moved up the charts, too. The Tribeca resident has sparked more controversy with his latest novel The Final Testament of the Holy Bible, which denounces pretty much all traditional concepts of God (the second coming of Christ takes place in the Bronx projects).

With a New York Times best-selling biography (Benjamin Franklin) under his belt, Walter Isaacson moved to a more current American “hero”: Steve Jobs. Years before Jobs stepped down from Apple, Isaacson saw a pertinent story about drive and innovation. Originally slated to be around 450 pages, Isaacson upped that number to nearly 650 pages after Jobs resigned. Simon & Schuster are set to release the biography in mid-November.

Fred Wilson

venturing out Co-founder of Union Square Ventures, a New York City-based venture capital firm, Fred Wilson, despite his popularity from his blog, remains somewhat mythical by rejecting other media attention. From 1996 to 2001, Wilson and Jerry Colonna ran Flatiron Partners, investing in a number of high-profile Web startups until the dot-com bubble burst and the startups started to fold, and Flatiron stopped making new investments. In late 2003, Wilson started his own blog at the same time that he and Brad Burnham, with whom he co-founded Union Square Ventures, were first looking for funding. When apps were still a novel idea, the duo’s investment strategy was based on an idea that was unique at the time: the belief that the Internet’s "next wave" would be in web services: the "application layer."

The two started their first fund in 2004. In 2008, USV added Zynga to the portfolio. Though tech and web companies are mostly based out of Silicon Valley, Wilson believes New York should take more of a prominent place in this industry. USV now makes its investors more money than any other venture capital firm in the world, according to one private equity data company. Attempting to handle the sweltering humidity, ties are loosened and drinks are poured while Evan Rachel Wood takes to the microphone, belting out Janis Joplin songs. She transforms herself into a gyrating, pulsating soul sister as Robin Wright, Christoph Waltz, Diane Kruger and Sir Norman Foster watch in awe. Remember, Evan sang in Julie Taymor’s Across the Universe.

By 2 a.m. Ms. Wood is drenched and jumps into Cipriani’s Olympic-size pool in her borrowed gown. She has the dress cleaned the next day and sends it back good as new.

THURSDAY, SEPT. 1, 2011 George heads for the 38th Telluride Film Festival to attend his tribute program introduced by Ken Burns. Fox Searchlight premieres Alexander Payne’s The Descendants. George stars as a father of two who learns about his wife’s infidelity.

You have to love the role-reversal. Nobody cheats on George—which is why his performance is so poignant.

Clooney and Payne met at the Toronto Film Festival two years ago and were shooting in Oahu months later. Payne edited the film at Clooney’s Italian villa Gwyneth Paltrow on Lake Como, where the Ides of March cast (including Charlie Rose who has a cameo playing Charlie Rose), holds a reunion the weekend before this year’s festival.

Activities include George and Grant challenging Charlie and Marisa to a strenuous game of hoops on the private basketball court. Late-night partying ends with Mr. Rose skinny-dipping in Lake Como—a tradition started by that wild and crazy guy Walter Cronkite years ago.

In Venice and Telluride, The Weinstein Company screens their silent film The Artist, directed by Michel Hazanavicius and starring French movie idol Jean Dujardin. The film was premiered back in May at the Cannes Film Festival.

TUESDAY, AUG. 30, 2011 Art collector, polo player and film producer Peter Brant gives me a ride to the 68th Venice Film Festival to mingle with Hollywood glitterati. Venice is the thousand-year-old city that looks like a movie set floating on water, and has been the backdrop for films from Casanova to The Tourist. This year, 65 films will have world premieres. Among the jury are two American directors: Darren Aronofsky and Todd Haynes, and one musician: David Byrne.

Early Oscar buzz for films and male lead performances could be The Descendants, The Artist and Shame. This momentum Marisa Tomei has to sustain itself on the long road to Eddie Murphy’s opening monologue on Oscar night in February.

Next to Evan Rachel Wood’s favorite pool, I am lunching and munching on pasta and pizza with Valentino, Giancarlo Giammetti, Bruce Hoeksema, Charlene de Ganay and Carlos Souza aka “the family.”

Paul Giamatti, whose family changed their spelling, tells me he is actually related to Valentino’s business partner Giancarlo Giammetti, which is a visual stretch of the imagination.

Valentino has brought his yacht T.M. Blue One carrying six pugs to Venice to attend Madonna’s premiere of W.E., which is about the compelling romance between King Edward VIII and the twice-divorced Wallis Simpson.

Madonna has shown an early cut to Valentino in his grand Paris apartment last spring. Valentino loves the film and says Andrea Riseborough, who was trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, is as fascinating as Wallis.

Similarities between Madonna and Wallis are striking: both Americans hounded by the press, both moved to London to marry Englishmen, both were fashion icons always re-inventing themselves and both were possessed with a faint sense of being misunderstood.

Fresh from fighting fires and saving lives on Richard Branson’s Necker Island, she is joined by co-stars Christoph Waltz and John C. Reilly.

Polanski, however, is in Gstaad. He remains a wanted man in the United States, and although he avoided an extradition charge last year, he still risks arrest in some parts of Europe. Carnage, filmed in “real Jessica time,” is a 79-minute actor’s showcase set Chastain in a Brooklyn apartment, but shot entirely in Paris.

Late September, two years after Polanski was arrested en route to the very same Zurich Film Festival, he will return to receive a lifetime achievement award.

At the Carnage dinner, Kate talks about portraying a neurotic wife and mother who gets drunk at a civilized sit-down and projectile vomits between two couples discussing their sons’ schoolyard fight. Kate tells me the vomit was actually squashed banana, oatmeal and molasses that Roman would lick between takes for comic relief.

Mildred Pierce’s HBO gang, including Kary Antholis, director Todd Haynes and co-stars Guy Pearce and Evan Rachel Wood, are at Kate’s table digesting this information.

FRIDAY, SEPT. 2, 2011 Today is the day Cipriani is over-booked and they are hell bent on tossing me into the canal. No queen-size bed, nor cot, nor couch materializes. Next door, Peter Brant is renting half of the Bauer Palladio because even he couldn’t get into this oasis with all of his kids. The bed Peter promised me for tonight has been quietly given away to Owen Wilson, who surprisingly arrives on Larry Gagosian’s plane this morning. Peter heroically rescues me by finding a suite in his hotel with double-the-height ceilings for a gazillion euros.

With my 12 p.m. toss-out and luggage left in Cipriani’s lobby, I race to the press screening of Sony Pictures Classics and Canadian David Cronenberg’s highly anticipated film, A Dangerous Method, produced by Jeremy Thomas.

Set on the eve of World War I, the film is about Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung and their patient Sabina Spielrein, the Russian Jewess who for years remained uncredited for her influence on the development of modern psychology.

The cast features Viggo Mortensen as Freud, Vincent Cassel as Austrian psychoanalyst Otto Gross and newcomer Sarah Gadon as Jung’s wife.

Michael Fassbender portrays Jung, with Keira Knightley (queen of the costume dramas) as Spielrein. Yes, they are fully dressed in their famous sexually charged spanking scenes. This is just the warm up to Fassbender’s raw and disturbing sexual romp through lower Manhattan on Sunday night in Shame, Thomas’ other film.

At the press conference the cast jokes about drawing from their own madness as research and inspiration. I, on the other hand, am in a panic speeding back to Cipriani to wheel my suitcases around the corner to the Bauer Palladio.

Looking lost, dejected and pathetically disheveled, I thank God no one sees my fall from grace.

I eventually realize I am missing a pair of small gold and diamond earrings.

Oddly, the same thing happened to me last year during a room change. I chalk this up to the price of foolishly traveling with real jewelry.

At the premiere of A Dangerous Method, I am stressed because I don’t have a ticket, having given my pair to Peter Brant and bed-robber Owen Wilson.

Having seen A Dangerous Method this morning, I slip out and head to the first Gucci Award for Women in Cinema dinner hosted by Frida Giannini in Cipriani’s rustic barns that were previously ancient granaries, but are now donning elegant white Murano glass chandeliers.

This new award recognizes outstanding women in filmmaking. The jury includes Robin Wright (who heads to Toronto next week to the premiere of Bennett Miller’s Moneyball); James Franco, also Toronto-bound with Sal about Sal Mineo; and Valeria Golino, whom I met on Rain Man. Madonna asks for “a drum roll, please,” as she announces winner Jessica Chastain for Tree of Life . . . but it might as well be for the 11 films Chastain has made since being discovered by Al Pacino four years ago for Wilde Salome.

Jessica is presently in The Help, The Debt, Take Shelter and Texas Killing Fields.

She is also Toronto bound with Ralph Fiennes’ Coriolanus. This Juilliard graduate is following in the footsteps of iconic Meryl Streep.

François-Henri Pinault, chairman of Gucci’s parent company PRP, is headed to China to support their medical and educational foundations. Pinault’s wife, Salma Hayek, wearing a Gucci gown embellished with crystals and feathers, discusses Oliver Stone’s Savages, the film about Mexican drug lords that she is currently filming in Los Angeles.

Suddenly a cake with sparklers appears for Salma’s 45th—and Madonna encourages us to belt out “Happy Birthday.” Singing along are Ginevra Elkann, CAA’s Hylda Queally, manager Jason Weinberg and the Brant boys: 18-year-old Petey and 14-year-old Harry.

Across the canal, Luca Dini, editor of Vanity Fair Italy is hosting a dinner for David Cronenberg at the pink, Gothic, 15th-century Palazzo Pisani Moretta.

An official guidebook says, “can rent out for sumptuous receptions and unforgettable parties.” They are not kidding. Lit exclusively by candles mounted on hundreds of antique Murano glass chandeliers, the palace has no electricity or air conditioning. Considering Venice is in the middle of a heat wave, it still feels like a sauna at midnight. Add 300 film patrons frantically fanning themselves and eating hot risotto and ravioli, and you have the hottest party I’ve ever been to. Literally. Keira, in her long-sleeved, gold lace Valentino is dabbing her body with ice water from the table.

SATURDAY, SEPT. 3, 2011 With a 12 p.m. checkout and a 3 p.m. check-in at Cipriani, I am beside myself with packing fatigue and blowing $500 a day on boat rides.

I am watching Steven Soderbergh’s sleek medical thriller Contagion aka SARS: The Movie with the A-list cast including Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Laurence Fishburne, Jennifer Ehle, Jude Law and Marion Cotillard. Michael Shamberg produces and Scott Z. Burns is the screenwriter. The film imagines a virus killing millions as scientists try desperately to find an antidote. It starts with peaky-looking Paltrow in a casino touching everything, chatting on a cell phone to a lover, coming home to her husband and expiring on the kitchen floor as she foams at the mouth. Gwyneth tells us this is accomplished by biting down on an Alka-Seltzer. Ironically, Contagion’s after party at Palazzo Pisani Moretta has a dozen huge, plastic air conditioners humming around the ballroom for a film about a plague.

Next I find the documentary Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel hidden in a tiny screening room in a basement. Lisa Immordino Vreeland, married to Vreeland’s grandson Alexander, produces and directs. Clips from Vreeland’s early life, family and her years at Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue and the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute along with interviews with Diane Sawyer, Andy Warhol, Calvin Klein, Oscar de la Renta and John Fairchild show a woman with a keen respect for cultural history and an original sense of style.

SUNDAY, SEPT. 4, 2011 Press are lining up an hour before the 9 a.m. screening of the steamy, evocative festival “it” film, Shame, directed by Steve McQueen (not the deceased actor known for posing on a motorcycle, but a very talented Englishman). Michael Fassbender plays the tormented 30-something addicted to sex. Carey Mulligan is the wayward sister who moves into his apartment fostering chaos. Shot in the Boom Boom Room of the Standard Hotel, she sings a chilling blues version of “New York, New York.” Iain Canning and Emile Sherman, producers of The King’s Speech, sold this to Fox Searchlight, who will face the challenge of releasing a NC-17 movie.

I am backstage in the green room with Al Pacino—the Merchant of Venice— moments before he enters a packed pressroom to discuss Wilde Salome. His passionate documentary and feature mélange is based on Oscar Wilde’s play, the biblical tale of Salome and King Herod, which explores the destructive use of sexuality. From biblical times to the Boom Boom Room—it’s a big day for dysfunctional, obsessive sex.

Al, wearing a white silk shirt and sporting longish hair, looks like an escapee from Scarface. Jessica Chastain is about to explain her slithering, almost-nude dance in a red scarf for King Herod. Al asks his second agent to write an acceptance speech for the Jaeger-LeCoultre Glory to the Filmmaker Award he is to receive tonight.

The agent stays calm but clearly does not have a clue who to e-mail in Hollywood for help. Al eventually realizes he will go on stage tonight and wing it. The Italian press go nuts as their hometown boy, “Michael Corleone,” makes his way to the podium. I saw this exact, almost religious, reverence last year when Sofia Coppola was in this pressroom for Somewhere. The Godfather is Italy’s sacred film and its filmmakers are their cinema saints. As Al’s entourage is escorted out of the building to the waiting watertaxi past screaming fans, one zealous guy jumps into the canal swimming and chanting “Al, Al, Al,” with his arms in the air just like “Attica, Attica, Attica,” in Dog Day Afternoon.

Al waves back.

Al’s post-premiere dinner is at the Palazzo Grassi, built in 1740 and is now owned by François Pinault who uses it to exhibit his art collection. This is also where Amy Sacco transforms the lobby into her late-night, pop-up Bungalow 8 every evening.

Al, with his luscious Argentinean girlfriend Lucila Sola, along with producer Barry Navidi and entourage, end up poolside at Cipriani eating bowls of pasta and ice cream. Gary Oldman, Laurence Fishburne, Peter Brant and Owen Wilson pay respects.

Keira Owen receives praise for Midnight in Paris. Princess Firyal of Knightley Jordan wants Al to pose for a photo with her niece. While housekeeping packs my clothes, I conclude that this is the year Hollywood embraces launching their Oscar-bound films overseas. The race began in May on the beaches of Cannes where Midnight in Paris and The Artist debuted with black-tie galas nightly.

Late August, American and English films dominated the Venice waterfront where Shame heated up amid more fancy parties in grand palazzos.

Tiny Telluride, now showing more European films, was the next stepping stone with a Western, hometown casualness.

And September was Toronto, the mother of all film festivals, with a smorgasbord of films. Here was the most user-friendly, fashion-free film festival where one walked to four films a day. Moneyball brought Brad Pitt to town, who brought Angelina Jolie. International stars ended up at the Soho House whispering about “the race.”

Early October is at Lincoln Center, home of The New York Film Festival, with films that have debuted in the other festivals and await sanctioning from the American media and public. The academy members are yet to weigh in.

One ends up with the exhilarating feeling of experiencing world cinema alongside passionate festival curators giving support and clarity from directors to distributors and helping simple film fans like you and me.

I am hardly the first to be a working single mom, but I can say this: as frightening as it was to go back to work with a newborn while simultaneously getting divorced, I found that with tenacity, dedication and drive, one can carve out an exciting career. I am fortunate to be in one of the most beautiful and vibrant places in the world, but it is a very competitive and demanding business. With a commitment to earn my own living and re-create a lifestyle that I was accustomed to, this field can provide you with all of this.

What's the most exciting part of your job? What keeps you going each day?

It has to be the challenge of matching one’s needs with the home of their dreams. If you are lucky, it can be the first home that comes to your mind, but sometimes it can take years until you find the right fit. It is a creative process where one has to really listen and filter through all the offerings that will ultimately result in a great experience for everyone. It’s being a part-time therapist, concierge, decorator, financial consultant and so much more that defines being a broker. It’s not always easy but when someone is thrilled with the job you’ve done and you have hopefully changed their life in a positive way, that’s what drives you to do it over and over again.

What distinguishes you from others in your field?

Having a fashion background, I think it would probably be the strong sense of aesthetic and creativity I bring to my job. I tend to be a bit obsessed with high style and design from what I choose to wear in the morning to the listings I like to represent. I think most who meet me immediately trust that I can sift through mediocre offerings and connect with them as it relates to finding something stylish yet practical—whether it’s a starter home or an oceanfront with all the bells and whistles. After all, a home has to fit your personality, and besides being educated about the market, the critical road to gaining confidence from your client or customer is to connect with them. It is an intimate and personal journey and not just about crunching numbers and making deals.

What is your dream project?

I am living it! After all, I am in the Hamptons! If I were to be truly self-indulgent, it would be to design and create a spacious modern green home on the water here so that my daughter, our friends and family can visit anytime and feel like it’s the ultimate happy and comfortable experience. Oh, and plenty of room for my pets to be happy, too!

What do you consider your greatest professional accomplishment?

Keeping hope alive for my clients during these complicated economic times. To accomplish the goals of all participants in a potential transaction, I have found that the broker must sometimes function as a CEO—listen to both side’s requirements, assess the situation, then advise all on the best course of action while helping them recognize and embrace the best opportunity. Buying a new home is a dream that can still be achieved. Developers are building again and New York is the destination of choice for International buyers.

What makes real estate a great career for women?

This career demands serious time commitments. The pay-off comes later and sometimes, much later. A real estate broker is one of the few careers that does not value youth over experience and therefore gives many women a chance to enter the field later, often after having raised their children.

Many of the most successful brokers in this industry have become the power-elite at an age that would have pushed them to the sidelines in other businesses. In addition, residential real estate is not bound to an “old boys network.”

What do you think defines you as an influential woman?

If I have any influence, it is with the young women brokers who I have cultivated over the past two decades. I strive to raise the bar of broker professionalism and inspire other women to do more in this field than just open doors. I have recruited, mentored or hired more than two dozen successful women brokers. Some of these young professionals have referred to our time together as “The Field Advantage” as I have shared with them my enthusiasm and love of real estate while offering an insider’s perspective of the skills needed to excel.

Witnessing these bright, ambitious and talented freshman brokers succeed has been enormously rewarding for me.

What distinguishes you from others in your field?

My business plan incorporates a team structure among independent salespeople. Everyone in our group of eight works for themselves, profits from their work, while advancing their skills through the cooperative structure of our group.

This is a generous, proactive group of dynamic brokers who benefit from collaborative support, which in turn permits deeper client service and greater sales volume.

When we last checked in, you were busy with International buyers, how is that going?

This week I am returning to Asia for my third selling tour this year, building on Sotheby’s expanding business with global buyers. The emerging elite from Singapore, Taiwan, Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong continue to take advantage of current market conditions with focused interest in New York City. Manhattan is now the ultimate luxury brand for many Asians.

What do you think defines you as an influential woman?

As a clinical professor of dermatology at NYU Medical Center and senior vice president of The Skin Cancer Foundation, I lecture nationally and internationally in the areas of skin cancer, Mohs surgery, cosmetic lasers, Botox® and fillers. I am the first woman to serve on the Dean’s Council at George Washington University Medical School (my alma mater) and enjoy serving as a mentor to doctors and residents who wish to expand their knowledge in anti-aging, nonsurgical rejuvenation and state-of-the-art laser technology for facial rejuvenation.

What distinguishes you from others in your field?

In my private practice, I specialize in cancer and cosmetic dermatology. Although these might seem like polar opposites, in reality, I bridge two worlds of medicine whose goals are the same: to help people stay healthy and to look as good on the outside as they feel on the inside. I specialize in treating skin cancer with a precise technique called Mohs surgery, which provides the highest cure rate and the best cosmetic result. Sharing an office and being married to a plastic surgeon for many years, Dr. Robert H. Gotkin, I have developed a keen aesthetic eye. As a woman of a “certain age,” I truly relate to my patients and feeI I have my finger on the pulse of what women want. My philosophies regarding anti-aging and nonsurgical rejuvenation are expressed in my books Beauty and the Beam: Your Complete Guide to Cosmetic Laser Surgery and Instant Beauty: Getting Gorgeous On Your Lunch Break (St. Martin’s Press).

What's the most exciting part of your job? What keeps you going each day?

I care deeply about my patients and am passionate about them looking and feeling their very best. I love it when my patients tell me “I saw so-and-so yesterday who came to your office about a month ago—she looked incredible!. I’ll have what she’s having!”

Have you noticed any trends in your field? What are people asking for?

I guess you could call me the plastic surgeon’s wife who’s not yet ready to go under the knife! Like many of my patients, balancing the demands of a career and busy social life, I prefer less drastic procedures without a lot of down time. Nowadays, it’s incredible what can be accomplished so quickly and easily with the right combination of Botox®, fillers and lasers.

What's the most exciting part of your job? What keeps you going each day?

I enjoy helping to bring peace of mind to our clients, particularly with all the uncertainty we face. They want to feel secure financially, for themselves and for their families. Most also want the next generation of their family to have the values and knowledge needed to manage their wealth wisely. I enjoy helping them get to that place.

Have you noticed any trends in your field? What are people asking for?

Investors used to focus heavily on return. The financial crisis has made investors acutely aware of the importance of really understanding what’s in their portfolios. Our mantra for investors is to “Know Risk.” We even perform a top-to-bottom financial review, our Risk Audit (SM), for investors. It includes a thorough evaluation of their investment portfolios, their estate plans, their cash management and leverage and the total fees they are paying. Nine times out of ten, the review exposes significant risks they were unaware of and/or unnecessary fees that hurt their after-tax return. If unchecked, in many cases, the excess risk and fees can cost these investors a lot of money over time.

You have long advocated for the financial empowerment of women. What are some key ways that a woman can better manage her finances?

This is hugely important. Women typically outlive men. Factor in the U.S. divorce rate, and a majority of women will end up in charge of their financial affairs at some point in their lives.

First, be sure you understand your financial situation, even if your spouse or partner is overseeing your investments and other finances.

Many women who find themselves suddenly widowed or divorced are terrified because they have no clue about managing money.

Second, get advice from a respected professional. Do some research. Is the person experienced? Has this advisor ever had a client complaint filed with a regulatory agency? And how is the advisor compensated: through commissions/bonuses earned from the products or funds they offer you? Or are they paid a fee that you agree upon at the start?

Third, you need to trust the person and the institution that you are working with. You should feel he or she is listening to what you want, and putting your interests first; that they are willing to tell you what you need to know, not what you want to hear.

How are you a leader and role model for other women in your field?

Although I do not think of myself as a role model for other women in my field, if perceived as such, I hope to be a source of inspiration to fellow Realtors regardless of their gender.

What do you consider your greatest accomplishments?

The manner in which I conduct my business is as important as my accomplishments. Integrity and discipline are traits to which I most aspire and would hope to have recognized by my peers and clients.

Surely, there are certain accomplishments you view as your most significant.

I am not one who is comfortable talking about my accomplishments. However, the accomplishment of which I am most proud is unparalleled service to my clients, whether they are seeking to purchase a magnificent waterfront estate, buy a small apartment or secure a seasonal rental. After a sale or rental is completed, I enjoy continuing to offer assistance in finding the best service providers to meet their day-to-day needs.

In a career that spans nearly three decades, how have you been able to always remain relevant?

While it is necessary to be aware of market trends and incorporate a continuously evolving market into my business model, I endeavor to remain true to traditional core values of respect for my clients and colleagues, self-discipline and superior service. For me, the foundation of everthing is consistent ethical behavior, which has seen me through many a fluctuating market.

During these fluctuating markets, how have you been able to remain committed to your career?

Because I enjoy every aspect of real estate—my clients and colleagues, understanding the Palm Beach market and history of the houses, working with clients to find their new home, securing a new listing for sale—it is easy to remain committed.

Overall how do you currently find the state of the market?

During 2011, there have been significant purchases by buyers who view the time as being right for investment in Palm Beach real estate.

In addition, sellers have become more realistic and willing to negotiate which has led to prospective buyers not hesitating to make reasonable offers.

Thus far, how has your business been in 2011?

Business this year has been the best it has been since early 2008, not only for me, but also for most agents in Palm Beach. In early 2011, high-end buyers were active in comparison to the past three years.

As a result the number of available waterfront properties is quite low.

Currently, rental properties are in high demand for this upcoming Season.

So do you only handle high-end properties?

No, as a matter of fact, I deal in all price ranges and in rental properties as well. Many modest requests for rentals have developed into long-term relationships, leading to multiple sales and referrals.

Name those key factors necessary to be a successful agent.

Know your product, keep your finger on the pulse of the market, do your research and stay in touch with your clients, even after a transaction is completed.

My definition of an influential person is someone whose words and actions have the power to cause change. The three P’s: Patience, Persistence and Passion.

What is your dream project?

It would be to create a non-for-profit that would counsel women of all ages to identify their goals and follow their dreams—enabling them to find careers that are fulfilling and financially rewarding.

People now live longer lives and should remain active way past their retirement years in order to stay mentally and physically healthy. I dream that I could be able to help senior women find a new purpose in life, to stay busy, healthy and independent. There are not enough hours in a day for me to make it all happen.

What's the most exciting part of your job? What keeps you going each day?

My favorite part of this job is that winning feeling when I find a property that answers my client’s needs. Today real estate is a great investment and an important part of a portfolio, yielding a greater return on investment than the market. My daily motivation is not only to know the client better but also to be an expert on the market.

Have you noticed any trends in your field?

Young professionals are creating “hip” neighborhoods. It is fun to see these develop—overnight an old and tired neighborhood is transformed into the it place to move to and money follows.

What do you think defines you as an influential woman?

I believe that women should be defined by how they live their lives, not by how they look, what their career is or even whom they’re married to. It’s a philosophy that was instilled in me from an early age by my mother, who was dedicated to her family, church and community. It’s because of her example that I’ve purposed to live my life by her words of wisdom, “You’ve got to give it away to keep it.”

For 12 years, I’ve been actively involved with Change for Kids—a non-profit that partners with under-funded public schools to provide literacy, arts and music enrichment programs in New York City—and I volunteer at my own kids’ schools. I believe that empowering children empowers the community and therefore shapes the future. I apply the same philosophical approach to real estate: by infusing a community with innovative developments, I can influence its long-term financial growth and prosperity.

What distinguishes you from others in your field?

The impact I’ve had in redefining and establishing residential communities in Manhattan where they didn’t exist before—like Madison Square Park—thereby transitioning these areas into vibrant neighborhoods. My pioneering efforts proved successful for my development partners and so naturally others followed. I consider myself a strategic visionary, especially in an uncertain economy. I made a calculated decision to diversify within the arena of residential real estate so that I could be viewed as both an influencer and a broker. I have converted buildings to condos and navigated flipping tenants’ rights, developed new construction from the ground-up, as well as negotiated deals that range from $500,000 to $10’s of millions on behalf of sellers and buyers for everything from small homes to large estates and townhouses all over the city. I pride myself on educating them with a comprehensive analysis and overview of the market so that they have realistic expectations. Their knowledge of current data establishes faith in the market and trust in my process, which ultimately becomes my power when I’m negotiating on their behalf.

What’s the most exciting part of your job? What keeps you going each day?

For me, it’s the people! The buying and selling of real estate is an emotional process and I get involved in almost every aspect of their lives so my clients become like family.

It’s a privilege to assist them in the next chapter, whether they are moving away or purchasing a new home. I initiate partnerships that naturally evolve into friendships over time.

I even met my husband through a client who set us up on a blind date!

What do you consider your greatest professional accomplishment?

Founding my own firm, without a doubt. My goal from the very beginning was to build a different kind of company and I like to think that Hundred Stories PR is unique in the field—not just in terms of execution, but also in the overall approach and creativity we bring to each client.

What makes public relations a great career for women?

Not to over-generalize, but men often have laser focus and women take into view the big picture. Maybe it’s evolutionary, because women were responsible for surveying the field and protecting the fold, though I’m not sure what a biologist would have to say about that.

There’s so much in this profession to consider and weigh, and I think sometimes it rewards a woman’s eye and a woman’s more encompassing take on her environment.

Plus, most of the buildings have elevators, which are great if you wear heels.

How are you a leader and model for other women in your field?

I think it’s a combination of risk-taking and the confidence that comes with experience. Operating a small business is one of the most challenging professional leaps a person can take. So you’d think it would require daring, and it does. But clients put their reputations in our hands, and that calls for a sober-minded, responsible temperament. I’m required to tap into two almost opposite traits. I can personally say being the reliable person comes much more naturally to me.

But I took the leap, plug away at it every day and have seen my business grow impressively. To the extent that I can continue to strike this balance, I can be considered influential or a leader. That said, if my kids go to nursery school with their pants on backwards, feel free to call my overall leadership into serious question.

What distinguishes you from others in your field?

My experience as a reporter, and as an inquisitive person.

I ask my clients questions that I think others would overlook and I’m interested in unearthing a good story. I call this “mining for gold.” Only after I learn the story of my client or their building or the property—and it’s not always obvious—can I begin to formulate a strategy.

What is your dream project?

A luxury hotel that puts me up for the night whenever I have to work a late event. Or maybe an old film noir star who tips in original movie posters. Farley Granger could use some publicity, I think. Of course if Jeanne Gang, winner of this year’s MacArthur genus grant, ventured into New York, I’d be first in line. Innovative projects— Chicago’s Eco-Bridge, the Singapore Flyer and Dubai’s Hydropolis Underwater Hotel and Resort—are also high on my list. Is it time to stop dreaming now?

As one of the first women on Wall Street, I’d like to think I helped break the glass ceiling for women in finance.

I started out as a broker at White Weld & Co. and then moved

Simultaneously, I raised two boys and ran two houses where I enjoyed being my own decorator and architect. Today, I manage my own money and devote myself to helping others through my support of medical research and the arts.

What makes you a leader and model for other women?

I’ve been committed to helping fund groundbreaking medical research for 35 years. I have donated my time and resources to a number of important doctors and causes since I was in school in Montreal. Many doctors dedicate their lives to research. They have accomplished a great deal, but because they lack sufficient funding they can’t achieve as much as they would like to. Their ideas are bigger then their budgets.

Together with my late husband Daniel Sargent, who helped build the corporate end of Salomon Brothers, we worked to help establish the Avon Chair at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. We also contributed to Dr. Patrick Walsh’s prostate cancer research at Johns Hopkins University.

This year I’ve made an ongoing commitment to the research of Dr. Victor Nitti, who is the Vice Chairman of Neurology at the NYU Langone Medical Center. He is dedicated to the area of female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Nitti is working everyday to turn his ideas into realities. I’m helping him launch a fund so that he can establish a multidisciplinary Female Pelvic Center at NYU. I get involved with doctors because of their diagnostic and healing skills as well as doctors who have helped me or my friends.

I hope to inspire others to do more for the medical field and culture through my own commitments to numerous doctors and artists. My interest in medical research began with my late uncle, Dr. Arthur Vineberg,

whopioneered artery transplants in 1948. I still remember hearing him talk about using a refrigerator to freeze the heart while he was operating so when it was replaced it would still function properly. Thinking back to that time and then seeing today what they have accomplished with transplant surgery is truly remarkable.

I founded a scholarship in his name—at McGill University. It’s very important to help train the young doctors who will become tomorrow’s leaders in research. Since then I’ve also helped my friend Jeffrey Borer, a cardiologist and the Chairman of Medicine at SUNY Downstate, with his research.

I’ve supported Dr. David Kennedy and created a chair in his name at the University of Pennsylvania to help fund his research on bone-related diseases by building the Temporal Bone and Skull Base Teaching Laboratory.

I have worked over the years with Dr. Leon Root—an orthopedic surgeon at the Hospital for Special Surgery— for his research on children with cerebral palsy.

What do you think defines you as an influential woman?

I think a woman of influence is someone who is always looking forward, who remains open-minded and who has a wide scope of interests. I’m getting more involved, politically. One of my grandsons worked for the Obama campaign in 2008 and the other worked for Carolyn Maloney. They got me interested in politics.

I feel strongly about the right to have an abortion and have from the very beginning. Same sex couples should have the right to marry and adopt. I was happy when New York passed the Marriage Equality Act; lets hope the rest of America will follow.

What is your dream project?

To help the arts and continue my work for more medical research. There is so much young talent in New York but they need to help to pursue their dreams. My friends Rex Reed and the late Kitty Carlisle Hart introduced me to the world of theater and opera in the late 90’s. Now, I go to the theater every week. I enjoy seeing plays several times because it is a new experience each time.

The play and the actors progress and they react differently to each audience and because of that I learn something new from each performance. I support the Roundabout Theater Company, the Manhattan Theater Club, Playwrights Horizon, the Lincoln Center Theater the New York Theatre Workshop and the Metropolitan and New York City Opera companies. I want to help other people achieve their dream projects.

Collaboration is the Key Town Residential’s Managing Director Paula Busch shares her thoughts on the company’s new team initiatives

I

n the real estate industry, a lack of cooperation has occasionally been one of the hurdles representatives have had to clear in the course of closing transactions.

At Town Residential, we have prioritized improved collaboration with all of our industry colleagues as a fundamental pillar of our business philosophy. From our collective experience, it is our belief that an unwavering emphasis on cooperation and collaboration will maximize the business opportunities for our representatives and, more importantly, ensure that our clients’ best interests are always at the forefront of everything we do.

One part of our industry that has never received sufficient thought or attention is the interaction between brokers and property management companies. I believe that brokerages have long taken management companies for granted, unable to look past their traditional roles such as serving as closing agents. The truth is that property managers and additional management company representatives play invaluable roles in our industry, ones that go far beyond what most representatives initially realize.

Natural competitive instincts have often limited the collaboration between representatives from different companies, but in the end only the client is left bearing the brunt of these short-sighted decisions. Town, we are committed to taking the high road when it comes to collaborating and co-broking with our fellow industry colleagues.

No matter what logo graces their business card, they are ultimately just a partner in accomplishing the goals that our clients have tasked us with. While financial motivation might limit someone’s willingness to collaborate on an individual transaction, I firmly believe that it is a losing strategy in the long run. The long-term benefits that representatives reap from consistently emphasizing cooperation will always outweigh the short-term gain of an individual deal. And at the end of the day, our decisions must be guided by the best interests of the client and not short-term gain.

In an industry where multiple parties regularly play a role in any individual transaction, it is crucial to focus on cooperation amongst them. My grandmother who grew up here—she loved this city’s heart and soul and made it come alive for me.

The diversity: I love walking down any street in New York and hearing ten different languages.

WHAT PHILANTHROPIC ACTIVITIES ARE YOU MOST PASSIONATE ABOUT?

Globally, microfinance pioneer ACCION, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary in New York this fall. Locally, I am involved with organizations serving children, women and girls, including the NYWF, the YMCA and Sanctuary for Families.

THE MAJORITY OF YOUR BOARD POSITIONS ARE WITH NEW YORK-FOCUSED ORGANIZATIONS. WHAT IN PARTICULAR GOT YOU ENGAGED INTERNATIONALLY?

Seeing that the poor were economically active but without access to financial services, learning more about microfinance as a solution, and finding ACCION. WHO IN THE WORLD IMPRESSES YOU THE MOST?

The entrepreneurial poor I’ve met on my travels to Colombia, India, Ghana and most recently, Manaus in Brazil’s Amazon. Their optimism about life and their hard work reaffirm my faith in humankind and our ability to thrive through our own efforts.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING IN THE WAY THE WORLD WORKS, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

riginally from Connecticut, New York City’s first lady attended Dartmouth College and received an M.B.A. from Columbia Business School before she launched her career as an investment banker at Smith Barney. She went on to become a founding partner of M.R. Beal & Company, an investment firm specializing in municipal finance. Taylor serves on the board of several non-profits, which include The After-School Corporation, the YMCA of Greater New York, the Hudson River Park Trust, and the International Women’s Health Coalition, amongst others. A member of the Council on Foreign Relations, Taylor also recently received a Masters in Public Health from the Mailman School at Columbia University.
