Cheers I to the New Year
t is around this time, as my January column reaches you, that you are acting on your New Year’s resolutions . . . or not. When I asked people back in December what their New Year’s resolutions would be, Tina Fey, who I thought would be my funniest commentator, had to think about it. “You know . . . I never make them,” she said, while rescuing her daughter, who had pulled her hat over her face and was careening into a table. Funny, no, but probably wise. Still, it is interesting to ask. Most of these quotes came from guests at Cinema Society’s screening of The Fighter. And no, I didn’t ask Mark Wahlberg. He hugged and kissed me when we met—and rendered me incapable of speech. But I recovered in time to ask some other people.
Below: From left, Amy Sacco, Russell Simmons, Katie Lee, Michelle Paige Paterson, Tiki Barber and Nicole Miller
Florence Henderson: I vow to keep dancing! And I will try not to say negative things about people.
Michelle Paige Paterson: I will resume my private life with a passion, and I’ll try to spend less.
Amy Sacco: I will clean my closet. I will not have any children.
Thom Filicia: I want to work less, but smarter. And I don’t want any more unnecessary drama.
Vincent ‘Big Pussy Bonpensiero’ Pastore: I will lose weight. I will not fall in love. Russell Simmons: Working with my ‘Peace Keepers’ mission. [Started in Houston, now in New York City, this organization protects inner city residents with street patrols.] Katie Lee: I will break a sweat every day. I won’t not cross things off my ‘to do’ list. 10 | AVENUE MAGAZINE · JANUARY 2011
Patricia Clarkson: I am going to try to keep believing in Obama. Tiki Barber: I want to take steps to newer heights. Kelsey Grammer: I will not repeat the things I’ve done before, and will live with more love. Nicole Miller: I will always put my
cell phone in the right slot in my bag. I will remember where my coat check is. And I’ll start Christmas shopping earlier. Rosanna Scotto: Lose weight, and live in the moment. Val Kilmer: Lose less, love more. Harvey Weinstein: Make good movies, not commercial ones. [Note: Weinstein’s The Fighter is great, not good, and will be a success in every sense.]
I hope your resolutions work, but if they don’t, you’re still wonderful. Happy New Year! !
