A

ctually, the Turkish automotive and auto spare parts industry have prospered dynamically in line with ever increasing demand from abroad. Business people operating in the industry have become outward oriented more than ever before. The Turkish autoparts industry with its large capacity, wide variety of production and high standards, supports automotive industry production and also has ample potential for exports. These companies not only dominate the primary supply markets but also capture an increasing share of the replacement market. Their continued success in exports markets depend on close technical links with part makers in industrialised countries and the willingness of their foreign partners to integrate their Turkish counterparts into their production-distribution networks as regular suppliers of high quality, low-cost components. Due to the high export potential of the sector and the regional advantages of Turkey, the autoparts sector has been attracting foreign investors. Most of the world leaders in the sector have joint-ventures with Turkish companies. Turkey is the only country within the surrounding geographical area to have established a well advanced automotive industry. Therefore, the automotive industry is strategically important both for Turkey and for firms that will invest in Turkey. This month, we participate in Automechanika Mexico to convey the message of the Turkish automotive and auto spare part exporters. As known, Automechanika Mexico is Mexico and Central America's most significant automotive trade show. Held annually in Mexico City, the event draws thousands of attendees in the automotive industry. With key domestic and international manufacturers as exhibitors, PAACE Automechanika Mexico is the ultimate platform for sourcing domestic and international products and suppliers. Leading professionals from the automotive aftermarket sector will be present at the event and the latest information and updates from the industry will be closely monitored as usual. Thus, the event will be a good platform to find out more about new products, find new suppliers and compare product alternatives. Today, with a network of 15 events in 14 countries, the Brand Automechanika offers exhibitors access to new markets and bring them into contact with new national and regional visitor groups. The Automechanika brand is backed worldwide by around 16,000 exhibitors, 600,000 trade visitors and a network of around 120 trade associations. So, we are at Automechanika Fairs around the world. Our publications remain at the service of those business people seeking to increase their share in the increasingly competitive automotive markets. We wish Turkish automotive exporters and their trading partners lucrative business.

Goodyear And Pirelli Researching Use Of Rice Husk Ash

10

G

oodyear will be the first one to release them onto the market, later this year. Global rice paddy production amounts to around 700 million tonnes each year, and some 20 per cent of this total paddy weight is made up of rice husk, which is separated in the rice milling process and has traditionally been discarded by burning or by dumping in landfill. But in recent times new uses have been found for this former waste. Pirelli and Goodyear Tire & Rubber, for example, have tested independent from each other silica derived from rice husk ash over the past two years. Goodyear is now ready to launch a tyre using rice husk ash-sourced silica, and will begin manufacturing these products at its Pulandian factory in China this year. The tyre will be sold in the Chinese domestic market. Silica is used as a reinforcing agent in tyre tread compounds and is favoured over traditional alternative carbon black due to its facilitation of lower rolling resistance. While a technique for generating silica out of rice husk ash has existed for a few years now, only the most recent processes have resulted in silica of a high enough grade to use in tyres. Goodyear says JULY 2015

the results of testing carried out on rice husk ash silica at its Innovation Center in Akron (Ohio, USA) show the substance’s impact on tyre performance to equal traditional sources. “Sustainability is a cornerstone of Goodyear’s innovation efforts,” commented Goodyear Tire & Rubber chairman and chief executive officer Richard J. Kramer. “This new silica benefits the environment in many ways: It reduces waste going into landfills; it requires less energy to produce; and it helps make tyres more fuel efficient.”

T

he new MAN Lion’s City, launched recently during a MAN bus event in Istanbul, is aimed at customers in the large European standard intercity bus segment. The vehicle is well-appointed for intercity travel and shuttle transport as well as use as a robust school bus. This distinguishes the high-floor bus, which is available in 12 and 13 m length versions, from the Lion’s Regio. A highly efficient 290 hp D08 common rail engine powers the two-axle bus. Depending on which seating option is selected, the Lion’s Intercity has a maximum of 55 seats (59 for Lion’s Intercity C) and a maximum of two wheelchair spaces and one wheelchair lift. MAN claims the new Lion's Intercity combines first-class comfort with high functionality, and outstanding safety with MAN’s top quality. The vehicle not only sets standards with its striking, aerodynamically optimised design and excellent driving characteristics, but also especially with its efficient fuel consumption and the low life-cycle costs, according to MAN. MAN Lion's Intercity has been redeveloped from scratch based on the tried and tested MAN modular concept in order to meet customer needs in the standard intercity segment. Overall operating costs were the focus here. As a result, great emphasis was placed on a weight-saving design, ease of service and repair as well as low fuel consumption. It is coming from the MAN D08 common rail diesel engine with a performance of 290 hp. The MAN Lion’s Intercity has been optimised in all aspects for use as an intercity bus and a school bus and has a practical design which makes it clearly recognisable as a member of

OPEC Confirms Commitment To Stable And Balanced Market The OPEC countries confirmed their commitment to a stable and balanced oil market, with prices at levels that are suitable for both producers and consumers at the 167th meeting of OPEC

T

he 167th Meeting of the Conference of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) was held in Vienna, Austria, on Friday, 5th June 2015. The Conference considered the Secretary General’s report and the report of the Economic Commission Board. It also exchanged views on other issues, in particular, preparations for the COP21/CMP 11 in Paris; the status of the UN post-2015 development agenda; the Organization’s ongoing cooperation with the International Energy Forum and the International Energy Agency; the ongoing collaboration with various international organizations within the G-20; as well as OPEC’s ongoing energy dialogue with the European Union, the Russian Federation, and others. Agreeing on the importance of maintaining dialogue with other oil-producing countries, the Conference affirmed the technical meeting of oil and economic experts from both OPEC and Non-OPEC countries, held on 12th May 2015, in Vienna. The meeting had discussed, inter alia, oil market fundamentals and the global economy, with participants concluding that market stability remains a common objective for all producers, attainable through cooperative effort. Participants agreed to convene again before the end of the year. The Conference reviewed the oil market outlook, as presented by the Secretary General, in particular the demand and supply projections, and the outlook for the second half of 2015. The Conference noted that the global economic recovery had stabilized, albeit with growth at moderate levels. In the current year, GDP growth is projected at 3.3%, with this expected to be at a slightly higher level of 3.5% for 2016. Recording its continued concern over market volatility and the challenges faced by the global oil industry as a whole, the Conference observed, further, that the sharp decline in oil prices witnessed at the end of last year and the start of

62

JULY 2015

this year – caused by oversupply and speculation – had now abated, with prices moving slightly higher in recent months. The Conference noted that world oil demand is forecast to increase in the second half of 2015 and in 2016, with growth driven by non-OECD countries. On the supply side, nonOPEC growth in 2015 is expected to be just below 700,000 barrels per day, which is only around one-third of the growth witnessed in 2014. The Conference also observed the recent build in stocks and the surplus of oil in both OECD and non-OECD countries, which has resulted in stock levels that lie well above the fiveyear average in terms of absolute volumes, indicating that the market is comfortably supplied. In view of the foregoing, the Conference resolved to maintain the 30 mb/d ceiling and urged Member Countries to adhere to it. Member Countries, in agreeing to this decision, confirmed their commitment to a stable and balanced oil market, with prices at levels that are suitable for both producers and consumers. Nonetheless, the Conference stressed that, given the current market uncertainties; the Secretariat should continue to closely monitor developments in the coming months. The Conference expressed its support to the Republic of Ecuador in the exercise of its sovereign rights over its natural resources, in accordance with international law, a right documented in the Algiers, Caracas and Riyadh Summit Declarations of OPEC Heads of State and Government. The Conference decided that its next Ordinary Meeting will convene on Friday, 4th December, 2015, in Vienna, Austria.

Telling past, today and future of the Turkish automotive industry, Kudret Onen, Chairman of the OSD, said; “Since the foundation year 1974 onwards exerting efforts for Turkish automotive industry, the industry has staged for many breakthroughs, led in many issues. In the 1970s having capacity utilization in the level of thousands, today it raised by 1,75 million of capacity utilization and 1,2 million production. Reminding the sector had brought up its own professionals, chairman Onen continued: “Beyond letting Turkish automotive technologies won to Turkey, as well as having brought up its expert, engineers, technician, the Turkish automotive industry exports its own vehicles by making production, design and R & D studies to the world markets. Making up value-added and increasing in its exports even in the horizontal market conditions by investing in capacity utilization and new products, featuring export champion in overall sectors, our sector continues to provide remarkable value-added to our country economy too. During past 9-year period, the total foreign trade of the automotive sector yielded surplus worth $14 billion.” Touching development of the sector in recent years, Onen said the growth of the world automotive sector, which has been exposed to hesitation regarding global crisis in 2008, is continuing but the sales has not reached pre-crisis period level. Onen also said extreme capacity in Europe has been continuing, as for China’s huge emerging condition in automotive production and market was continuing. In North America the sector has recovered and almost has achieved the figures of pre-crisis. Onen recorded; “Even our automotive industry saw the effects of the crisis in 2008, yet our market and exports have recovered swiftly. Despite managing the crisis very well with support of domestic market nevertheless, the automotive sector has not still achieved the domestic

market figures of the year 2005. In this context, despite the domestic market diminished in 2014, but production increased.” Although diminishing in the domestic market and despite horizontal action in the production, and going on increase in the exports was promising on behalf of the sector Onen continued: “We, as the Turkish automotive sector, keep up with surging capacity. Big portion of our capacity’s focal point is exports and our country’s automotive industry maintains its growth in line with exports. We have reached the exports worth $22,8 billion and 1,75 million of production unit. In short, we can say that we enjoy an investment period regarding very positive effect of incentives.” Stating the automotive sector was maintaining its pioneering in area of R & D Onen said, “Remaining ahead with the number of 57 R & D centers in the country, the automotive industry draws attention with the budget over TL1 billion and some 4 thousand staff in R & D studies. The incentives plays very crucial role in these positive developments. We expect ‘Test Center and Test Runway’ which is one of the most important steps of developments in this area should be accelerated.” Remarking about the figures in 2014, Onen said, “With the leverage of the exports the production increased 4 percent and new projects have had an outstanding share in that. Despite the domestic market stagnated, but exports expanded 7 percent along with the new projects in the production. “If we assess generally, the industry sustains its export-based growth and 75 percent of the production is exported. Our foreign trade balance yields surplus. In addition, very big projects have been started due to the positive contributions of incentives. Taking into account all of these, the automotive industry will set its own records in 2015, once again the sector will be export champion and locomotive of the overall exports,” Chairman Onen noted.
