hello & welcome To our online version of Australia’s Sweetest Morning Tea (ASMT) Virtual E-vent for 2015. ASMT was created in 2013 in conjunction with Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea to celebrate diversity and sweetness with meaning by empowering contributors to think differently and above all else to create awareness and raise funds for Cancer Research. In 2015, ASMT is once again a series of collaborative e-vents that come together to showcase some of the most talented sweet artisans within Australia. A theme was set and an interpretation was made and sweet beauty unfolded. Turning the following pages we know you will be transported from one beautiful e-vent to the next and become inspired by the ideas and heartfelt inspiration that each contributors e-vent has created. We hope you enjoy and get a lot of inspiration from this online edition. Shortly this magazine will be available to purchase as a hard copy magazine meaning you can keep it forever and indulge whenever you choose. We are pleased to say that $5 from the sale of every magazine goes directly to The Cancer Council. COLOUR & DESIGN INSPIRATION For 2015, we wanted to bring awareness to the future generation – our kids. Especially give hope, laughter, light and joy to those children who are suffering through a cancer journey that no child should endure. To focus on simple pleasures and experiences that a child longs for or remembers. To reminisce of our own childhoods and remember the dreams we once had. To think of the dreams that we have for our children. More importantly to bring awareness to worries, pains and sorrows that children with cancer live with. As sweet artists, we would like to portray hope, happiness, joy, light, sunshine and laughter in these dark times, in the way that we know how – through sugar! To make a child smile and laugh, to think about funny and silly things and for them to wonder at a world where they can hope to live. When looking for concepts, your inspiration is never far away. We all know someone, either closely or by chance meeting, that has a child that has been touched by cancer. It is sad but a true fact of this day and age. When thinking of childhood cancer, your mind will automatically firstly think of them and their story. THIS can be your inspiration. Do you think of the boy in your son’s soccer team – your inspiration could be sports, as that is how you FEEL when you think of him. What about the adorable little girl at your daughter’s ballet class – arts and culture could be your inspiration. Do not limit yourself to what you find in our mood board, as this is only a guide. Be guided by your own life and the stories it tells.

Box of DREAMS PIPED DREAMS

“To portray hope, happiness, joy, light, sunshine and laughter... to make a child smile and laugh, to think about funny and silly things and for them to wonder at a world where they can hope to live.” The colour palette I chose was predominantly yellow with pink and a touch of red. The main reason I chose these colours was that they not only fit with this year’s ASMT theme but they also perfectly mirrored the musical jewelry box I had as a child. With this year’s ASMT design brief, I immediately thought of the little musical jewelry box I had on my dresser as a young girl. It was a cheery, bright yellow and featured the classic dancing ballerina. I would sit, mesmerized, watching the little ballerina dance. Memories of standing on my tippy toes, trying to dance and spin just like her. I loved how she would spring to life along with the music when I lifted the lid of the jewelry box and then wonder when she would take her bow as the lid closed down over her and the music stopped. It was where I kept all of my precious little treasures! The beads my mother gave me, the colourful butterfly brooch I cherished. Those pearlescent shells I found beachcombing on our family holiday. It was a magical box that not only held my treasures but it brought me so much joy. I chose to use that memory as my inspiration for my 3D animated musical cookie box. We styled the photo shoot to resemble a young girl’s room and with the help of my beautiful young friend, we sought to capture a little of those simple and carefree days. Childhood cancer touches far too many children and it robs them of joy. In creating my sweet cookie music box, I really wanted to be able to convey a sense of happiness and wonder. I hope my sweet project brings out a smile and maybe even inspire someone to stand on their tippy toes and twirl in unbridled joy.

CAK E ME TO YOU R PAR TY

A MOTHER’S LOVE My aim of this project was to emphasise a “Mother’s Love” for her children. To give a voice to the hopes and dreams that we have for them. We pray that they grow up safe and strong to achieve what makes them happiest in life. Mothers have a deep, unmovable kind of love. The kind that turns you into a gruesome bear should anything stand between you and your cub, kind of love. For my colour pallet, I chose shades of turquoise, sky blue, yellow and white. As Mothers, I think we have many days that are shaded with blue. Tough, long days that are deep blue and others that touch you with some relief of turquoise and sky blue. Sunny yellow brings hope, fills me with happiness and reminds me of laughter. Yellow is a child’s smile, a snuggle in bed on Sunday, and a bad ‘knock knock’ joke which can brighten your day!

White and yellow sugar daisies bring the message of ‘purity, innocence and loyal love’- so befitting of our young children. Daisies hang their heads when they are sad, and raise them heavenward when they are feeling joyful. Yellow roses represent joy & light. I approached the textures with a clear and free feeling. Wanting to not over-complicate the messages held within this piece, I chose clean lines for the top tier of the main cake, using cocoa butter as my method of painting, to bring life and depth to the Mother’s face. Her silent tears fall in the shape of the wafer paper petals on the second tier, into a quiet pool on the bottom. I chose an historic area where I live which is beautiful and calm, with ponds and streams nearby. It is called “The Nook”. Mothers and children have so much to learn from each other - so much to give, so much to teach and show much joy to share!

GUArdian ANGEL My Guardian Angel IS here to serve and protect. She brings love and peace quietly and humbly, with subtlety and softness. I used pink, yellow, gold, white and blue – soft and rich colours to emphasise the Guardian Angel and all that she stands for. The words on her dress; love, hope, faith, etc, express her ethereal qualities and selfless nature. I have used fondant, royal icing, styrofoam, cotton wool and feathers for the Angel, and her clouded sky surrounds. The Angel’s dress is fondant covered in rough royal icing. It is textured with various impression pattern mats and fondant hearts and flowers, plus all of her characteristics/ beautiful qualities imprinted on her dress. She reflects all the beauty we have inside of us – she is not perfection, simply an inspiration and beacon of hope.

THE TREE OF LIFE ‘‘The Fairytale Cake’ inspired by snow white (my favorite fairytale as a child) has green and red colours - opposites, representing the polarity of life and challenges in growing up as a child. The colour palette used was contrasting colours that pop!

The ‘Tree of Love’ - the black of the tree represents the strength of love in my home and growing up and then the bright colours of the tree itself represents how healing love can be to a child. The red love hearts represent ever lasting love and also tie it back to the red berries that are growing on ‘The Fairytale Cake’. The red toffee apples and ‘toadstool’ meringue kisses are red and this ties them to the colour palette and also to the two cakes together. They also help create the feel of nature. One of the main aspects of the shoot texturally are the leaves. Crisp leaves representing nature, the forest floor. The texture of the leaves was a great foundation for the cakes, toffee apples and meringue toadstools to set off their colours and convey the feel of something organic yet sentimental in nature.

RainboWS ON A CLOUDY DAY I was excited to find out the theme for this year was children and the colour inspiration was rainbow colours! What child doesn’t love rainbows? What child doesn’t look up in wonder at how those beautiful colours shine through even the dark and dullest of skies? My dessert table this year is actually more of a dessert installation. I wanted to do something totally different to previous years, and this was the perfect year to do it. I decided to make a beautiful rainbow cloud, raindrop and sun cookies and an umbrella cake and create a childlike and whimsical feel to encapsulate the happy feelings a child should have and to put a smile on their faces. I knew I had to use all the colours of the rainbow. It made me think back to when I was a child without a care in the world, not having to worry about my health – I was one of the lucky ones! I used to love the rain. I loved the sound, the smell, and the way it made me feel. I could sit at the window and watch it all day.

One thing I used to love doing was playing around and dancing in the rain, stomping through puddles in my gumboots, what child doesn’t love doing that! My little model is the gorgeous Miss Charlie who happens to be Kassi’s daughter. Kassi is my cousin and she is also my photographer on this shoot and has done all my previous ASMT shoots. Charlie has had her own medical issues from the day she was born, although lucky enough not to be cancer, she’s still had some struggles, in and out of hospital but she is the sweetest little girl and nothing could wipe the smile from her little face!

MAGICAL BUBBLES Our thoughts are that many colours equals happiness! So we decided on a feminine rainbow theme. We tried to use as much colour as possible but still keep the overall picture clean, young and fun. We tied this in with a gorgeous location at Clarendon where we made use of some beautiful old rustic wooden tables and a superb autumn backdrop. We then found a nice patch of green for a picnic and to enjoy our sweets!!!

We asked our children for ideas that make kids smile. They came out with rainbows, bubbles and fairies! So we set about putting these all together. We had bubbles in the air, which always bring a smile to a child’s face and to help bring that into our sweets, we used bubble textures on our cake and cookies. Our fairy on top of the cake is also blowing bubbles! She also has edible lace wings to add a touch of extra pretty! Our rainbow cupcakes have piped buttercream to imitate fluffy clouds and rainbow bubble wrappers! With a world of colour and being surrounded by magical bubbles – the world is truly a happier place!

The design brief this year concentrated on youth and children. I chose to work with pastel confetti colours as I think it represents the joy and laughter of children. The colours mix together well and form a happy feel.

My concept concentrated on pastel colours. Pastel because its such a soft approach and confetti because confetti is like rainbow sprinkles being thrown about in mid air. It is free and beautiful. I used mainly simple white back drops and styling to portray a humble and simple approach. I wanted it to represent happiness of children, their laughter and their joy. I focussed on these colours and using elements from the cakes to portray this. Whenever I hold a balloon it makes me happy and I wanted to use these in the shoot. I think balloons bring out the joy in everyone, I’ve never seen a sad person holding a balloon before! I also made a carousel and gumball cake dating back to the child I was. I loved gumball machines and remember asking my mum for coins to buy gumballs from these machines. I don’t know what made it so thrilling to buy it from the machines even though they hurt my mouth and didn’t taste that great! A carousel represents being a kid at heart. I think even when your old you’re never too old to ride one. It reminded me of all the fairs and shows I went to as a child. The carousel goes round and round, just like life! It keeps going no matter how tough life gets - it goes on.

We chose to focus on the colour gradient from pastel pink to a deep fuchsia with highlights of turquoise. Our shoot tells a story of the dream of a young girl looking up to her idol, a professional ballerina. The gradient in the pink tones represents the growth from the soft and delicate youth to the strong and bold dancer. We chose to include the turquoise highlights to draw upon the stunning poolside location our dancers dream was played out. We chose to use these three colours through the trio of cakes, each cake representing a step along the dancers journey. Textural elements echoed our dancers costume choices, the soft and flowing nature of their youthful contemporary dresses is mimicked in the flowing ribbon upon the pastel pink cake which then contrasts with the bold lines of the tulle tutus. The combination of bold and strong, yet feminine and elegant that is seen in the dancers tutus is reflected in the flowers both upon the cakes and in the paper flower bouquet and headpieces.

ASMT 2015 57

In knowing that ASMT is to raise awareness for cancer research, I wanted to focus on an event that revolved around the celebration of love, hope and cure.
A rainbow colour palette was chosen as it represented hope, laughter, light and joy.
All the qualities of the soul are represented among the colours of the rainbow green represents peace, red represents initiative and white represents purity. It brings balance and harmony to our souls.
Motivation, inspiration and strength is needed during the cancer journey and I hoped that the various inspirational quotes on the cookies; (“ Be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud”, “ Live fully, love openly and make a difference” - Brendon Burchard) would help inspire people living through these hard times.
The cloudy sky backdrop paired with colourful balloons and desserts represents the colours of the rainbow, reflecting a desire to create a dreamy feel to the shoot.
I hope that the cakes I created would bring smile and laughter to the children, and to encourage them to think about funny and silly things and to bring wonder at a world where they hope to live.

58 ASMT 2015

Cherished memories from my childhood have inspired the cakes, racing to the gumball machines at shopping centres, flying a kite in the park and painting rainbows in class.
The gumball machine cake represents those joyful moments when as a kid I exchanged what little small change I had for a gumball of happiness and the paint bucket cake reflects that the world is what one can make of it and encourages them to not be afraid to explore new challenges as it may bring a lifetime of happiness.
The centre piece cake was a kite cake, which is symbolic to a child’s dream to have fun and be free, where the sky is the limit.
That during our darkest moments that we must focus to see the light, therefore the contrasting sky and night cake was inspired by the quote “When it rains look for rainbows. When it’s dark look for stars”.
I was also inspired by Barbara Haine: “Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly.” We can all experience a time where, like the caterpillar, we may feel that we are wrapped in a world of darkness, but instead of remaining in a dark place, the cocoon burst and the caterpillar turned into a butterfly, free to escape the darkness and fly into the light. In our darkest hours, faith, love and hope will help us burst through like the butterfly into the light.

DREAM IN TECHNICOLOUR ‘It was a few years ago now, but the memory will never leave me. The phone call that told us that a friend’s daughter had just got the diagnosis that you never ever want to have. I remember going to the hospital to see Emilia, to say I don’t know what to her and her family. There are no words. Upon walking inside the oncology unit in the Children’s Hospital – it hit me! The realization that the doors to that unit were where one world stopped and another stood still. Inside these rooms were sick children and their families. At that door, their lives as they knew it stopped, or was put on hold. Nothing else existed. It was a surreal moment. However there is one thing that never left – it was even more evident in this place where time stood still – it was HOPE, it was DREAMS – it was palpable. It was the only thing that this cancer could not take. The ability to HOPE. To hope and to dream, and to dream in vivid technicolour was my inspiration. I wanted to represent the families that live inside those walls. They NEVER give up. Their dreams may be on hold, but they are still there, waiting to come to vivid life.

The concept was simple. My only prop was my own baby bassinet, that held all 3 of my children as well as my husband when he was a baby. The bassinet was symbolic of our children. The cakes inside the bassinet are all 3 based on whimsical childhood dreams – the man in the moon, flying away in hot air balloons and running away to the circus. However these cakes are all white – those dreams are on hold. But above those, hanging just beyond reach are the dreams realized and realized more vivid than one originally thought and in technicolour. The cakes below represent the struggle during this time – a time when cancer holds you by its strings and how by looking in the mirror, you just don’t know what you see anymore. I chose a spectrum of colour and texture to evoke the emotions of this vignette. Muted greys and whites for the struggles, heavily textured white on white cakes to bring definition to something that is on hold and finally, colour – vivid technicolour where your dreams come to reality. I dedicate this to Emilia - who fought through the grey and white and is truly on her way to the technicolour.

One of the great tragedies of cancer is that it does not discriminate by age. It is not a disease that affects the elderly after they have lived a full, long life. It is a disease that can strike at any age, in any circumstance. It is heart wrenching that children can experience such pain and challenges at such an early age. As I embarked on the amazing journey that is ASMT, I came upon a quote by Patrick Swayze that resonated with me. ‘I keep dreaming of a future, a future with a long and healthy life, not lived in the shadow of cancer but in the light.’ It is with these words that the ‘Garden of Delight’ was born. I knew immediately that the shoot had to be outdoors amongst lush greenery with the girls experiencing the simple joys of sunshine, friendship and fun. We used a colourful palette including shades of pink, coral, mint, and aqua embellished with mixed metallics. To a child the world is full of colour, wonder and joy and I wanted our shoot to be a refection of that. The amazing natural elements and textures of the outdoor location created a gorgeous green backdrop and contributed to the intimate feel of the picnic.

MUSICAL HOPE

ASMT 2015 89

PLAY: the moments PAUSE: the memories STOP: the pain REPEAT: the happiness Our theming is based heavily on simplicity and hope, and the great significance the simple things can mean in ones lifetime. This is especially evident when you add illness to the mix, suddenly material things mean very little and the heart and soul of living mean everything. Adventure, friendship, laughter and music. This is why I decided to go with oranges, yellows and greens. They are earthy, simple, no fuss tones that fit perfectly with our beautiful location of Kelly’s Falls in the Royal National Park as well as connect honestly with the heart and soul of the shoot. The idea of a campfire set up evolved as I reflected on my own personal experiences with cancer, in particular kids with cancer. I can recall a boy by the name of Ryan Hartley in my year 1 class who had Leukaemia. He wore a knitted Sharkies beanie to hide his hair loss and cruel kids in the playground teased him. When he went into hospital, our teacher Mrs Donlan sat our class around a tape recorder. We played music and sang songs and sent the cassette tape to his bedside in the hope it would make him smile. I realize now how powerful such a simple thing as music can be. For me different songs can instantly take me

90 ASMT 2015

back to a certain time of my life, the good and the bad. Music has lifted my spirits in dark times, and I really hope they lifted Ryans all those years ago. I chose a paisley piping design to fit in with the old school hippy vision for the shoot. I decided to go with white on white to once again highlight simplicity; this would also create the perfect backdrop for the vibrant yellow flowers to pop. Piping is something I have avoided in my cake decorating and I wanted the experience of ASMT to be a challenging one. I had pinned lots of patterns and designs I liked which incorporated the theme of music and hope along with henna type lines and patterns. Nicole from Pretty and Print saw my vision and created the most beautiful piping template for me to work from. I love the word “hope” on the top tier which is simply in a music note font, it by itself expresses the heart and soul of the shoot. I also included the line “I’ve got sunshine on a cloudy day” from the song “My Girl” which will forever take me straight back to my childhood. My Dad would often sing that song to me as he tucked me into bed at night. And just the thought of that memory makes me smile. I hope that my daughter Azaelee is able to experience how fulfilling the simplicity of adventure, friendship, laughter and music is as she grows older and my hope is that every sick child is able to experience them too.

OFF TO THE CARNIVAL The concept took on A carnival theme, with a rainbow colour palette, steeped with lustrous gold accents and set upon a tablecloth of fine white sequins to reflect the joyful colours. The display aimed to be viewed as a rainbow, starting with warm colours of rose, blush and orangefinishing with cooler tones of turquoise, ocean and emerald, and meeting centrally with vibrant sunshine yellow. There’s something quintessentially magical about looking at a rainbow as a child. It holds the promise that at the end of a storm, there is something beautiful waiting. The palette chosen was to capture a little bit of this magic, whilst threading through some alchemy, as of course, treasured memories are golden.

SW EET BEA ’S As a child, it’s the little details we remember so fondly, of times of pure unadulterated bliss. The feel of sunshine on skin and sweet summer breezes through pinwheels. Watching intently, skilled fingers turn a lifeless balloon into a cherished animal friend. Of carnival lights, sugary scents wafting gently in the air, and of course- sweet sensations! The carnival themed concept was filled with tiny details and focusing on sweet flavours reminiscent of fairgrounds. The three feature cakes were adorned with candystriped sweets, delicate sugar pinwheels and a dimensional sugar balloon dog. The table was finished with tiny twinkling lights, confetti balloons, and glittered milk bottles to add to the fairground spirit. Our location at Glenelg was chosen as it has been considered a South Australian pinnacle of summer throughout the ages, from its original stature as Magic Mountain to its current transformation as the Beachouse. I think most local children have memories of this seaside wonder- of carousel and ferris wheel rides, picnics on the grass and warm summer delights.

“ There’s something quintessentially magical about looking at a rainbow as a child. It holds the promise that at the end of a storm, there is something beautiful waiting. The palette chosen was to capture a little bit of this magic, whilst threading through some alchemy, as of course, treasured memories are golden.

LOVE DREAM HOPE The Cancer council website talks about cancer being a disease of the cells, which are the body’s basic building blocks. This is why it is so harsh when this terrible disease touches our children. Our little people are struck down by this sickness which prevents their bodies from making healthy new cells allowing them to grow, replace worn-out tissue and heal injuries. I chose to use the full rainbow of colours in my design. Rainbows have so many symbolic meanings, but to me they are all about hope and promise. When considering my design I thought a lot about the lyrics to

“Over the Rainbow” by Judy Garland, one of my all-time favourite songs. The song speaks of hope and wanting to be in a better place. I think everyone who has ever been touched by cancer can relate to these feelings.

“Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue; and the dreams that you dare to dream, really do come true.” Judy Garland - Over The Rainbow I chose to shoot on a disused railway line. Apart from being a simply beautiful place, I felt the rocks across the tracks showed the difficulty of the cancer fight, and the rail line represented the journey itself. You can’t see where the tracks end which is also true of cancer. We don’t always know what is going to happen or where we are going to end up. We must simply push though and hope for the best.

Make a WISH MOR EIS H MA CAR ONS

ASMT 2015 107

The theme of my photo shoot is ‘Make A Wish’. The first thing I thought of when deciding upon what I was going to do for my shoot was the idea of blowing dandelions as a child and making a wish. This was one of the things I loved most as a child. The ultimate wish is for no child to have to suffer with cancer either first hand or have a member of their family suffering. I wanted to create a magical garden with macaron ‘creatures’ as a feature. I imagined a little girl stumbling upon little snails, lady beetles, bees, owls and toadstools and being so excited to explore the ‘creature’ in this magical garden.

108 ASMT 2015

I chose to focus on pink, yellow and turquoise as the 3 main colours for my photoshoot. Having two boys I don’t often get to work with pink! I wanted to create a magical garden that any little girl would love to find and every little girl loves pink! Pink is featured in the main cake, which uses pink macarons, and pink flowers and the two macaron towers feature pink, yellow and turquoise macarons. My lovely model also is wearing pink and turquoise. Flowers used in the photo shoot also are predominately pink and yellow. This tied everything in so beautifully and cohesively. I also wanted to create a soft feminine feeling, so I made use of lots of soft flowers. Amongst that I wanted some contrast with the vine used on the cake and throughout the ‘ magical garden’. The cake and macarons feature a textured lace detail and rustic wooden cake topper. The use of the wooden bridge and reedy grass in the background of the shoot again contrast the pretty and soft textures used.

“The idea of blowing dandelions as a child and making a wish. This was one of the things I loved most as a child. The ultimate wish is for no child to have to suffer with cancer either first hand or have a member of their family suffering.

PASTEL PINWHEEL LUL AB ELL E

Since this is ASMT, I wanted to do a really special, fun and full of colour morning tea for my children!! Nothing says fun like colour! I chose to use a rainbow of colours, as I love the saying “Keep looking up... There may be a rainbow waiting for you!” I believe there is a lot of happiness in rainbows and the promises they bring and the joy they share. I am perhaps one of the lucky few not to have been touched closely by cancer. As a mother of two little children, I can only imagine the heartache that families and friends must go through when a child gets truly sick. When I think of these families and support networks, the first think that comes to my mind is “Cherish each day”. Make each day count. Make it special. Make each day a day that you can have a ‘favourite’ moment, even if it is as simple as a great big cuddle before bed. A moment spent reading a favourite book to your little one. Make eye contact and say “I love you” and mean it!! Our special tea party was set near a cute wooden cubby house in a garden. I love the contrast of the colours of the sweets against nature and the timber of the sweet little house! Children whether sick or healthy are such precious little creatures. So please, cherish each day you can!

THANK YOU We at Australia’s Sweetest Morning Tea would like to firstly thank all of our amazing contributors and their vendors. Without their amazing contributions our magazine would be just blank white pages. Thank you for your time, energy, love, talent, commitment and your support. Sweetness is made with love and it brings joy to so many. Sweetness is a very powerful thing and with this you have all brought awareness. ASMT began in 2013 with some handpicked talent from around our nation. In 2014 we swung open the doors and invited anyone who wanted to create sweetness for a cause. In 2015 we have done this once again and have been completely blessed with contributions from those who have taken our design brief on board and lets just say, they all shine! This years brief was the mastermind of Jacki Fanto from Blissfully Sweet and Nicole Hanna from Pretty and Print and this year it was all about the kids. We wanted to use colour, laughter, light and joy! Cancer touches the lives of so many but when a child has cancer the rainbow of life can sometimes turn grey. It was our goal to bring back the colour, the rainbow and the joy to children who are sadly affected by cancer. Whether directly or indirectly as a sibling, cousin or friend. The team behind ASMT is a wonderful and truly talented team. To Jacki from Blissfully Sweet and to the engineer behind this amazing magazine Nicole from Pretty and Print thank you so very much to the moon and back! To each and every person who has been touched by cancer, is fighting cancer, is caring for someone with cancer or who has left us due to cancer, we extend all of our love and all of this sweetness is for you! We hope through this years ASMT we have made you smile! With Kindness and deliciousness.

Enjoy!

Janet
