the quality of string playing in Western Sydney, and our community programs in partnership with the Australian Children’s Music Foundation and the Royal Children’s Hospital give children access to quality music education and unique performance experiences.

Over the years, the ACO has established a strong reputation for its innovative National Education Program. We have delivered important programs at primary, secondary, tertiary and post-graduate levels to address gaps in music education that have opened up in the last two decades. The ACO plays a central role in delivering high quality music education to students and teachers across the country. Education and the nurturing of new talent is a major initiative for the Orchestra.

Our Music & Art Program has created a global classroom for students around Australia, with lessons taught via video conferencing from New York and with videos from prestigious venues around the United States and Europe. Our groundbreaking digital installation, ACO VIRTUAL, has an extensive touring schedule Australia-wide, and our online lessons provide exclusive tips and advice for instrumental and classroom teaching from our world-class musicians.

In 2016 we are reaching more students than ever before, both in regional and metropolitan centres. The ACO has a vision to see music taught in every classroom around Australia, and we focus particularly on regional and remote areas through extensive touring with ACO Collective (formerly ACO 2) and the ACO Inspire Quartet.

Music can change the course of children’s lives. I believe that music should be part of the core curriculum. Research shows that musical training assists not only creativity, but also language acquisition and development, critical thinking, empathy and logic. If we know the benefits and we see the results, surely it makes sense to provide a rich curriculum, skilled teachers, and the opportunity for each and every student in Australia to have music as part of their education.

Our Emerging Artists’ Program provides professional development for some of Australia’s best young string players, many of whom have gone on to play with us and other national and international orchestras. ACO Academy, which runs during the July school holidays, shows the brightest secondary school string players what it’s like to play in a professional orchestra. Our Penrith Youth Orchestra initiative, in partnership with Penrith Symphony Orchestra and the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, is helping to strengthen 02

R ICH A R D T OGNE T T I a o A R T IS T IC DIR E C T OR From its very first concert in November 1975, the Australian Chamber Orchestra has established itself as one of the country’s finest and most innovative orchestras.

The ACO’s dedication and musicianship has created warm relationships with celebrated musicians and artists around the world.

With inspiring programming, unrivalled virtuosity, energy and individuality, the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s performances span popular masterworks, adventurous cross-artform projects and pieces specially commissioned for the ensemble.

The ACO has recorded for the world’s top labels, winning three consecutive ARIA Awards. Documentaries featuring the ACO have been shown on television worldwide, winning awards at film festivals on four continents.

Founded by John Painter, the ACO originally comprised just 13 players who came together for concerts as they were invited. Today, the ACO has grown to 20 players, giving more than 100 performances in Australia each year, as well as touring internationally.

ACO Collective is the ACO’s critically acclaimed 17-piece string ensemble which delivers the ACO’s regional touring and education programs Australia-wide. ACO Collective (formerly known as ACO 2) combines musicians of the ACO with Australia’s most talented young professional musicians at the outset of their careers, creating a combined ensemble with a fresh, energetic performance style. These young professionals have all participated in the ACO’s yearlong Emerging Artists’ Program and are in demand from Australia’s professional orchestras, but dedicate themselves to the ACO’s high-octane performance style for intense touring periods. ACO Collective commenced touring as ACO 2 in 2007 and since then has performed in more than 80 regional centres in every state and territory, all of Australia’s state capitals, and has toured to Japan. The Ensemble works regularly with guest artists of the highest calibre, both international and Australian, including violinists Elizabeth Wallfisch, Benjamin Schmid, Henning Kraggerud, Alexander Sitkovetsky and Thomas Gould; cellist Daniel Müller-Schott; harpist Alice Giles; recorder player Genevieve Lacey; singer-songwriter Tim Freedman from The Whitlams; and oud player Joseph Tawadros. 04

In 2013, the ACO presented the Ensemble in a national subscription tour led by Richard Tognetti which was named by The Australian as “one of the year’s must-see concerts”. Biennially, the Ensemble is the Orchestra-in-Residence at the Vasse Felix Festival in Western Australia and in 2014 it was the Orchestra-in-Residence at the Canberra International Music Festival. In 2016, internationally acclaimed Finnish violinist Pekka Kuusisto takes up the inaugural position of ACO Collective Artistic Director. ACO Collective, under Kuusisto’s direction, will open the ACO’s 2016 National Subscription season with an 11-concert tour of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, Adelaide and Newcastle. During 2016, ACO Collective will also undertake tours of regional Western Australia, under the direction of Pekka Kuusisto, as well as regional New South Wales, under the direction of special guests, the celebrated string quartet, META4. ACO MUSIC & ART PROGRAM The ACO Music & Art Program offers an accessible and engaging way to learn about music, where students can express their ideas and reactions to music through visual art. American teacher, artist, violinist and regular ACO collaborator, Sharon Roffman offers fun and engaging classes via video conferencing. Students experience her busy international performing life in the classroom through live and recorded video chats with international musicians and glimpses of back stage preparations before concerts in European and American venues. Running over two to four school terms, with programs for either Grades 3/4 or 5/6, units of work culminate in the creation of visual artworks in response to music. Children learn about the parallels between the historical periods that typify styles in the two artforms, as well as gaining ICT and collaborative skills.

2016 EDUCATION PROGRAM

Extensive resources are provided with the Program, including a dedicated website, lesson plans and professional development support for teachers to accompany Sharon’s lessons. The Music & Art Program helps teachers to increase their confidence to teach music through guidance from Sharon and ACO musicians. The Program is designed for schools in areas visited by either ACO Collective or ACO Inspire Quartet, in order to give students a live experience to complement teaching ideas. If you would like to register your school for this Program or would like further information, please contact us at education@aco.com.au

PRIMARY SCHOOLS’ CONCERTS & STRING ENSEMBLE PROGRAM Our partnership with the Australian Children’s Music Foundation (ACMF) brings ACO musicians into some of the most disadvantaged classrooms in Australia. Every week, ACMF music teachers inspire and engage thousands of children across Australia, mostly in disadvantaged and remote schools. Nearly all of the schools that have ACMF Music Programs now boast thriving choirs, drumming groups, rock bands, ukulele ensembles, and many have after-school music lessons as well. The music programs are also proven to increase school attendance. In Sydney, ACO musicians visit Soldiers’ Settlement Public School and Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, presenting facilitated concerts and workshops, teaching children musical skills and deepening their understanding of classical music. With the support of the ACO, and riding on the success of the ACMF Music Program, a group of 16 children at Soldiers’ Settlement Public School also receive weekly instrumental

10

lessons and ensemble rehearsals. They are also given the opportunity to attend rehearsals with ACO musicians at the ACO’s Studio and tickets to ACO concerts. In Melbourne, in addition to the ACMF’s weekly music lessons at primary schools in the Sunshine area, the ACO Inspire Quartet visits primary classrooms at Ardeer Primary School, Albion Primary School and Sunshine Harvester Primary School. The ACO, with the ACMF teachers, present facilitated concerts and participate in music workshops with the students. The visits of the ACO Inspire Quartet greatly assist with the students’ learning abilities, their development of a meaningful understanding of string instruments and introduce students to classical music. STRING WORKSHOPS

Information for applicants

Metro

String Workshops are extension activities for secondary and advanced primary students. Music will be made available to teachers approximately one month prior and students must ‘know the notes’ before the Workshop.
