Welcome to the 31st Year Book! You may be forgiven for thinking outside it’s 1984, but here in the Yearbook it’s a warm and welcoming 2015. And what a year it was! Reading through the following pages is like a magnificent walk down memory lane as we experience the dizzying highs and depressing lows of a year in politics that lent our editorial cartoonists more fuel than they could possibly use. From a cartoonist’s perspective, we should be very grateful for that! But there’s more to our Association than editorial cartoonists. While that’s certainly a fun group to hang with, we also have comic strip artists, caricaturists and comic books artists among us. Not to mention animators and illustrators. And speaking of which, this year you’ll have seen our newest category – Best Children’s Book Illustrator. As cartooning shifts away from the more traditional areas of newspapers many cartoonists are finding themselves adapting to new environments. Over the last few years we’ve added new categories to cover this changing paradigm – from the addition of Best Comic Book Artist and Best Animator to now, this newest award.

In a world where it appears the truth is an inconvenience, we are at the frontline providing it for all. So what you have before you is a Book of Truth. Therefore voting isn’t to be taken lightly. We must recognise those in the ACA whom we hold to be the best voices for truth in their various categories. As usual, we can’t recognise these individuals each year without the support of our wonderful sponsors. This year we thank The Herald Sun, The Australian, Copyright Agency/Viscopy, the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA), Supanova, Wacom and Media Super for their generosity. I’ve looked through this book and as usual have been blown away by the calibre of work within, I’m about to commence the most difficult truth I face all year – who to vote for. It’s always a tough job but never one I approach casually. I make sure to take the time for my own truth – that of whom I feel most represents the ‘best’ this year had to offer. I have no doubt you consider your vote the same way.

Cartooning forever!

The ACA is changing. Just as cartooning itself rides the zeitgeist in whatever form – from ochre on cave walls to our instant digital images to the world – change is one of the primary weapons at the forefront of cartooning itself. The most important though is of course, freedom of speech. Without the acceptance of that, we see tragedies unfold like that at Charlie Hebdo in January. Freedom of speech was brutalised and those who opposed it so harshly were defeated. Yet freedom of speech prevailed. Cartooning prevailed. And that’s what cartooning does. It survives. It lives on. No matter what changes occur and no matter what newspaper bean counters deem expendable, cartooning prevails. And it does so because it holds a mirror up to our society and demands we look at it. Demands that we see things from many perspectives and through that we can piece together the most important thing of all: Truth.

STAN CROSS AWARDS VOTING RULES 2015

ELIGIBILITY • To be eligible in any category, including “Cartoonist of the Year”, a cartoonist must be a financial full member of the Australian Cartoonists’ Association. • All artwork must have been originally published between July 1, 2014 and August 30, 2015. • All artwork must meet the criteria of the category as described at the start of each section of the Year Book. • Eligible members are permitted to enter two categories only. • The cartoonist must be represented in this Year Book - members whose work is not displayed or who display a not in competition logo are not eligible for a Stanley Award. JUDGING PROCEDURE • All financial full members are eligible to vote. • All voting must be completed only on the official ballot form supplied with this Year Book. • The Stanley Awards ballot form must be returned by the date designated on the ballot form and must be addressed to: THE STANLEY AWARDS, KPMG P.O. The committee will make the award from the nominations received. Nominees for the Jim Russell Award need not be members of the Australian Cartoonists Association or have work in the Year Book. All financial full members are invited to write to the President and committee and nominate an individual or organization they believe are deserving of the Jim Russell Award.
